Tires Continental Ice Contact 2 manufacturer. In search of the ideal: what affects the properties of winter tires. Correct replacement of summer tires with Continental winter tires

Tires Continental ContiIceContact 2 - winter studded tires for passenger cars. The model is distinguished by high grip characteristics on icy surfaces and on wet roads, demonstrates resistance to wear and mechanical damage, as well as fuel efficiency. The tire gives the car predictable reactions in unstable road surface conditions and ensures safe and comfortable movement in any weather.

  • The Continental Conti Ice Contact 2 model is presented on the market in eight dozen standard sizes (from 13 to 20 inches). The range indicates the wide applicability of the tire and allows you to choose tires for any modern car, from a compact runabout to a full-size version. Tires in this series are suitable for car enthusiasts who prefer an active driving style; the rubber holds the road well on the highway and provides the vehicle with maneuverability in urban conditions.
  • The rigid frame of the Continental ContiIceContact 2 includes reinforcing elements and allows the tires to easily withstand high deformation loads associated with dynamic driving or poor road quality. The tire does not deform during its entire service life and can withstand impacts from the edges of holes. When changing trajectory (including emergency maneuvering), the shape of the contact patch remains unchanged, due to which the car acquires an increased reserve of lateral stability.
  • The Continental Conti Ice Contact 2 tire can be used in a wide temperature range (including difficult winter conditions). The rubber mixture contains an increased percentage of silica, due to which the surface of the tread blocks remains elastic even in significant cold weather. The new compound not only ensures stable grip characteristics of the tire regardless of weather conditions, but also ensures fuel efficiency and resistance to abrasive wear.

Asymmetrical tread for improved handling on slippery roads

The Continental ContiIceContact 2 tire has a high-relief tread with a non-directional asymmetrical pattern, including a large number of blocks of complex configuration. The shape of the blocks determines the presence of many high sharp edges, which provide excellent contact with the road, both when driving along a straight line and during maneuvers.

  • The innovative stud system for the Continental Conti Ice Contact 2 tread includes 190 studs arranged in 10 rows and ensures predictable vehicle reactions to steering in ice and icy snow;
  • The surface of the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tread blocks is covered with two types of sipes, which form multiple hard edges in the contact patch area and enhance traction on wet roads, and also complement the work of studs on icy surfaces.
The tires are very decent. I recommend, but don’t buy from this company. Because I thought about it for a long time and decided to order these particular tires. My friend has these on his AUDI Q7. After I saw that there was a choice of GERMANY/RUSSIA manufacturer, I contacted the manager to clarify the batch that is currently being sold. He assured me that almost all the tires sold by MOSAVTOSHINA are produced in RUSSIA, but I ordered it with a little doubt. And what a surprise it was when a set arrived consisting of three wheels made in RUSSIA and one made in GERMANY. Everything would be fine, if not for one BUT. The stiffness of tires produced in RUSSIA and GERMANY is enormously different even when you bend the sidewall with your finger (there is a video on YouTube). So it turns out that one side goes quietly through the pits, the other side is horseradish.

Olef about the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tire

Mileage in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug on front-wheel drive ~14000 km September 2018-January 2020, dimension 18565R15 range t= +17 to -47, comparing with similar dimensions NHKPL-4 (Japan), GY UG-Extreme (Poland) and Yokohama F700 (Japan) I have something to share with fairly active driving:

1. Lateral drift in turns on icy asphalt - controlled, predictable, comfortable - there is no drift of the front axle, unlike NHKPL-4, they like light throttle application or tight accelerator depending on the situation. On average, they provide the opportunity to escape the flow both in a turn and from the start. Drift on compacted snow when turning is minimal, controlled a little better. On sludge, like most civilian tires, it floats. It is controlled on the water, but suddenly breaks into a skid when you overdose on the accelerator!

2. Acceleration on icy asphalt is confident, precise, with proper operation of the gas pedal, there is no slipping, acceleration is at the level of all-wheel drive.

On water, snow, compacted/loose - uniform, vigorous, without drifts of the front axle.

3. Braking is clear - predictable, 3 orders of magnitude higher than Yokohama friction tires, an order of magnitude higher than studded NHKPL, GY tires. There is no excessive operation of ABS on ice/snow/water (mostly due to the Kia concern, similar to BMW)

4. Ruts on icy asphalt under gas are overcome with yaw and a tendency to skid; under braking it definitely skids!

On dry asphalt in ruts, yaw is present without jerking, smoothly controlled.

5. It overcomes snow parapets from road equipment in loose/wet snow in one or two effortless steps, just like the GY UG-Ex, which cannot be said about the vaunted Nokian, which it throws around during the maneuver.

6. The noise level for studded tires is average - the cord is soft, there are no clearly resonant speed ranges as on the above mentioned brands.

7. Tread wear over ~14,000 km is insignificant, digital markers on all wheels are readable. With studs, it is worse during the first cold season when running in from asphalt, losing about 8 studs, comparable to NHKPL-4. I don’t recommend delaying replacement with summer ones due to the season; a large loss was noticed at temperatures above 0 degrees!

In general, the tires are an honest 4+, I recommend them to everyone, especially for cars with ABS and ESP, on front-wheel drive they allow you to pull the car on par with AWD, take a slippery turn on the verge of physics, that’s about them. I highly recommend it to women; from the Yoko/Nokian/GoodYear brands, my wife rated ContiIceContact2 as the best of all time.

Andrey about the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tire

Hello! TOYOTA Camry 2005 V6 on Continental ContiIceContact 2 225/50 R17 tires, traveled about 6,000 km. on the roads of KhMAO-Yugra from October 2018 to May 2019 in temperature conditions from +5 to -45, who lives here knows that our roads are not bad, but in winter the skating rink is an ice skating rink due to the bolts and high humidity. I haven’t lost a single thorn over the winter!!! In terms of noise, it’s very good for studded tires (everything comes in comparison), when starting off it takes well, braking is not bad, however, no matter what kind of tires, ice is ice, it maintains a clear trajectory in turns in the city and on the highway... in In general, I was satisfied... TEST!!!

Sergey about the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tire

205/60/R16 Very pleased with these tires. I especially “sweated” all last season on the old “Velcro” Hankuk on ice. I have traveled only 2000 km so far, and then mostly in positive weather, but I also managed to travel in heavy snowfall and ice. The car is very controllable and obedient. But the braking responds just fine, even the ABS never worked on a snowy track.

Moderately noisy for winter tires, but there is practically no sound insulation in the car, you have to speak in a slightly raised voice.

I won’t say anything about wear resistance - it’s too early, but I believe that the model will be no worse than the ContiIce Contact of the first series.

The tire was made in Russia, judging by the stickers, but it was of very high quality and was balanced with minimal loads. I hope “import substitution” will not fail.

Compared to summer tires and my old winter tires, the softness of the Continentals caught my eye, especially the softness of the sidewall in the part of the tire closer to the rim. Judging by the markings, the sidewall should be reinforced, but I did not recommend approaching curbs and climbing them sideways.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the price-quality ratio so far.

Denis about the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tire honest review

These tires were purchased at the beginning of winter. Exploitation of the Far North region. The road surface is mostly compacted snow, with ice in some places. The car handles the road very well on Conti tires. There is no hint of drift or skidding when cornering. I drove in snow and ice, most of the way was on the highway. You feel confident on these tires! Before this I used Dunlop, they were also good, but they quickly broke or the studs fell off, so I decided to buy something more reliable with more studs. There were two purchasing options: Continental or Hakkapelita 8. I read the reviews and decided that these tires were more suitable for me. I bought them and have no regrets. During use, not a single spike fell out. Tires are like new. I am satisfied with the purchase. I recommend!

Advantages

It copes with ice and snow with a bang.

Flaws

After the first season, the entire tread was eaten away and all the studs on two cylinders flew out. A friend has the same thing, exactly two cylinders for ejection. I have the front ones, he has the rear ones. I went for one season, he went for two.

A comment

Overall, the tires are not bad. Perhaps the marriage got caught. I will consider competitors.

Alexei

Advantages

Works great on ice and snow, 3 seasons - all the spikes are in place.

Flaws

While driving on bare asphalt, you can hear a hum at a speed of 100-110, but if you don’t listen, you won’t notice it.

A comment

Before this there were different tires: Cordiant, Kumho, Nokian, but Ice Contact 2 left the best impression.

Marat

Advantages

Good for braking on any surface, quiet tires, studs do not fly out when slipping.

Flaws

Over 60 km/h it roams on snow-covered asphalt. Due to the softness of the sidewall, there is a slight camber in the ride.

Alexander

Advantages

Handles the road very well. Snow, ice - it doesn't matter. It's great on the highway in heavy snowfalls.

Flaws

Throw away two cylinders after one season. All the spikes in the middle of the tread flew out and the tire turned inward. Traveled 25,000 km. A friend has the same problem after two seasons.

A comment

I didn't expect this from the premium segment. I will consider another manufacturer for the winter.

Eldor

Advantages

Rubber made in Germany is noisy and hard. Quiet only if the snow is well-rolled.

Flaws

I bought the standard size R16, 205/55 for the Opel Astra H station wagon. It blows away the back of the car, I've already caught it twice. At a speed of 40 km/h, in a shallow rut, the rear part was thrown out, and then in a section without a rut, the rear part also went into a skid; it was lucky that there were no cars nearby. In Kalina with Kama Euro, I didn’t wag my ass as much as in Opel with Continental Ice Contact 2. Every turn is as if in rear-wheel drive - the ass immediately turns around. Asphalt - the control has become weak, the wheel pressure 2.2 rearranges the car. I downloaded 2.4 - the wheels became oak.

A comment

Upset, it would be better to take BF Godrich. High price is not an indicator of quality!

Lyudmila

Advantages

I’ve been driving these tires since November 2018, I have no particular complaints, it behaves confidently in the snow, even in slush, it’s also great on asphalt, but on ice it’s unsure, the car rolls, you have to be careful and no spikes, even though they were praised, will help.

But he didn’t know that tires are not only physics, but also chemistry, with all the ensuing consequences (this, by the way, also applies to the fact of tire aging). The chemical component of this product was discussed at the Continental technical seminar.

TASK

The location chosen for the seminar was the most northern one - a training ground near the Finnish town of Levi. And the main topic of the seminar was the principle of creating an optimal, from a chemical point of view, winter tire. It is the optimal one (as we know, there are no ideal tires), focused on a particular region of use. And above all, taking into account the temperature conditions in that very region. To begin with, everyone was asked to hit two rubber samples with a hammer, just taken out of the refrigeration chamber. The first sample passed the test without a hint of residual deformation, but the second, like glass, shattered into pieces. The thing is that the first sample used a rubber compound “designed” to a temperature of –60° C, and the temperature threshold of the mixture of the second sample did not exceed –20° C. By the way, this is a good example of why when the corresponding season approaches and at a stable temperature below +7° C it is already worth changing summer tires to winter ones.

These are the ingredients for success: the components involved in creating a tire

It is the rubber compound that is the most important variable factor, on which approximately 50% of changes in tire quality depend. In total, Continental developers use 15 chemical components created using about 1,500 different materials, various combinations of which determine the characteristics of the tires. And the general technical task for the creators of the rubber compound is formulated quite simply - to ensure the maximum possible adhesion of the tire to the road under specific weather and temperature conditions.

SOLUTION

And then, based on the same technical specifications, the assembly of a kind of chemical puzzle begins. Does the compound provide elasticity and, accordingly, good adhesion? But won't the wear resistance of the tire suffer? Try to ensure increased mileage? But then how much will a tire whose tread is prone to “tanning” lose in its grip properties? Carbon black has been used as so-called “fillers” in the tire industry for a very long time, and 20 years ago engineers began using silicon dioxide (silica) - they seriously affect both the tire’s grip characteristics on wet surfaces and its wear resistance. And the optimal balance of these fillers in the chemical composition of the tread rubber mixture is precisely what can ensure the specified characteristics. Polymers in the rubber mixture provide the rubber with the necessary elasticity, and oils (Continental products also use rapeseed oil) make the rubber softer. As with other ingredients, the amount of oil in a rubber compound can greatly change the performance of the product. And already at the vulcanization stage, the ratio of substances such as zinc oxide and sulfur has a significant impact on the characteristics.

Continental IceContact 2 studs withstand a pullout force of 500 N

As the seminar progressed, its participants were asked to use “components” to create a compound that was optimal for certain conditions, putting together the same chemical puzzle. As for the practical illustration of these chemical calculations, the following figures can be given: if the braking distance of winter tires on snow from a speed of 50 km/h is 31 meters, then the braking distance of tires with the same compound, but with a summer tread pattern will be 42 meters. But just summer tires will go 62 meters. As they say, feel the difference.

PRODUCT

New products from Continental were also presented at the technical seminar. For example, the studded model IceContact 2. Regarding the main topic of the seminar, the tread compound recipe in this tire was focused on lower temperatures. Like its predecessor, the ContiIce Contact tire, there is an asymmetrical tread pattern, but the main feature is in the studs. Firstly, there are significantly more of them - 190 instead of 130! But what about the legislation regulating the installation of no more than 50 studs per linear meter, you ask. In this case, the Continental developers did the same thing as their colleagues from Nokian Tires, who used special tests to prove that increasing the number of studs in their product does not have a more destructive effect on the road surface than tires with the permitted number of studs. The IceContact 2 tire stud itself has become smaller in size and lighter by almost 25%, and new technology has been used to attach it to the tire tread. The stud is installed in the tire along with a small amount of a special compound, which, when vulcanized, securely fixes the stud.

This is how the studs of Continental winter tires have evolved

According to the developers, such an innovation has improved the degree of stud fastening by 400%. The first impressions of the new tires received at the test site are the most positive. Firstly, very good braking performance on ice. Secondly, when maneuvering on ice and compacted snow, the behavior of the tires is quite understandable, without surprises, they have a clear response to steering. As for comfort, including sound, it was not possible to test them on asphalt. But the developers themselves said that they did not forget about this parameter.
