The Dynamax plant consists of an intelligent control unit that constantly analyzes data from the controllers. The block regulates the torque by means of an electro-hydraulic clutch. The use of the new Dynamax system on the Kia Sportage made it possible to make the process of changing the operation of the car, depending on the road surfaces, intuitive and transparent.
All-wheel drive crossovers of this model are available with both gasoline and diesel engines. If we consider in detail how four-wheel drive works on the Kia Sportage, you need to start studying the system from the electronic unit located on the panel on the left side under the cladding material. The unit collects data, including information about the current load on the engine (throttle sensor), the speed of all wheels of the car, the degree of rotation of the wheels. Also, the electronic unit receives information from the unit responsible for the anti-lock braking system. The rear drive on the Kia Sportage is connected via an electromagnetic clutch located in front of the rear axle differential.
There are two modes of 4WD operation in this car, consisting of an automatic mode and a lock mode. In automatic mode, the rear axle is connected only if necessary, the ECU. When driving on normal roads, the Kia Sportage works like a classic front-wheel drive vehicle. A special switch activates the blocking mode. The button, depending on the year of manufacture of the car, is located on the control panel, to the left of the steering wheel, or in the area of the central tunnel, near the gear lever.
When permanent four-wheel drive is engaged on the Kia Sportage, the warning lamp on the dashboard lights up orange. Locking mode transfers half of the torque to the rear wheels. Its inclusion is possible at a speed not exceeding forty kilometers per hour. When the car starts to travel at a speed of thirty kilometers per hour, the rear axle is gradually disconnected. With an increase in speed not yet ten kilometers, the rear axle is completely disconnected.
When the speed decreases, the same process occurs in reverse order. In the speed range from forty to thirty kilometers per hour, the torque transmitted to the rear axle is increased until all-wheel drive is engaged. Deactivation of the blocking mode is carried out by pressing the button again.
On the screen of the Kia Sportage dashboard, there is not only a control lamp indicating the transition to lock mode, but also a sensor signaling the presence of malfunctions in the components of the all-wheel drive system. If there is a breakdown, the red light will turn on.
On Kia Sportage models, there is a 4WD system, consisting of a transfer case, a propeller shaft and an electromagnetic clutch. In such a system, the torque is distributed between the axles using an electromagnetic clutch, to which the transfer case transmits rotation through the propeller shaft.

Four-wheel drive does not work!
A very common malfunction in the 3rd generation Sportage is a breakdown of the all-wheel drive system. It occurs even when the car is operated exclusively as an urban SUV, without using the all-wheel drive blocking function. After all, even if you do not press the 4WD lock button, the control unit automatically engages the rear axle at moments of sharp acceleration when starting off, or when the front wheels slip. The torque is constantly redistributed by the ITM unit between the front and rear wheels in a proportion from 100% - 0% to 50% - 50%, respectively.
There are two faults with all-wheel drive on the Sportage:
- breaking all wheel drive couplings(PP);
- corrosion of the splined connection between the gearbox (gearbox) and the transfer case;
Moreover, the second malfunction occurs much more often than the first.

It manifests itself as follows: there is no connection of the rear wheels, even in 4WD lock mode (i.e. when the button is pressed), while the 4WD system malfunction lamp on the instrument panel is on. It is important that the PTO shaft rotates during this process!
In general terms, the clutch is a conventional multi-plate clutch system that is compressed under oil pressure. The pressure is generated by a pump attached to the coupling housing.
Error codes "P1832 Clutch Thermal Overstress Shutdown" or "P1831 Clutch Thermal Overstress Warning" appear. Here is a detailed description of what exactly breaks down in this case and how you can repair it.
This happens especially often when the coupling overheats, with prolonged slip. Or with frequent use of 4WD lock mode. But this mode is intended only for short-term use on an area with difficult road conditions. Do not drive for a long time with the 4WD lock button pressed.
The problem is solved by replacing the PP clutch assembly. The part is not cheap, but there are firms that provide coupling repair services. These services are easy to find on the internet.
Another possible breakdown is a malfunction of the clutch pump itself. In this case, error code P1822 or P1820 occurs. On this issue, KIA even issued a service bulletin, according to which of. the dealer should replace the clutch assembly.
If the car is not under warranty, you need to replace the pump separately, which will be much cheaper. Only the new pump has already been modified and requires the purchase of a wiring.
