Renault Duster fails crash test. Test drives and crash tests Renault Duster crash test with 1 airbag

Euro NCAP is a European committee that conducts independent full crash tests of a variety of vehicles. And last 2016, this same committee conducted a study of the popular in Russia, and not only French car, the budget Renault Duster, for both passive and active full safety, and this model received only 3 stars, which is actually not complete, but a failure. The committee's demands are extremely high. For example, since 2010, a built-in so-called all-round stability system must certainly be present in the basic new vehicle configuration.

The crash test, which was carried out more than once, by the above organization clearly showed everyone that for all passengers of this car, including children, during a trip, safety in this case is at an average level of 3-4 points on a 5-point scale, and for pedestrians are generally at the level of 1 point. It turns out that pedestrians need to stay away from the Renault Duster.

An assessment of the crash test showed that the developers of the “French” need to make some improvements, and car owners learned about all sorts of potential dangers and negative consequences that should be avoided.

General safety in the car

The safety of all adult passengers in the Renault Duster model is 74 percent. Frontal impacts, so to speak, are very dangerous for passengers and, of course, for the driver himself. Enormous pressure on the human chest area, despite even the protective belts and, of course, airbags. But the leg areas of the tested mannequins were not injured in any way at all. And during a strong impact, the back door opened, which is a bad indicator. Although overall, the car scored 11 points in this test, which corresponds to a solid C on a 5-point scale. During a simulation of a strong collision between a car and a pole, the same story happened with a human chest, the score received was 6 points - and this is really bad.

The car performed slightly worse in another test, in which a side impact collision was simulated. During an impact on the passenger side, the driver's door opened, and this greatly increases the risk of injury. The score received is only 7.2 points.

Things are much more unpleasant and worse in a rear-end collision. In this case, there is an increased likelihood of severe injuries to the cervical vertebrae. The score received is only 5.2 points.

Children passengers are protected somewhat better. In this category, the budget car crossover Renault Duster received 78 percent. This was the maximum estimate for the model.

Further, for individual age groups, the highest rating was given to the transportation of young passengers of the tested car under the age of 1.5 years - 18 points were scored. The crash test was carried out using a child dummy, which is in a special car seat (for a certain age) for children, which is located in the back seat. During a frontal impact, the dummy was held in its original position in its own place. In turn, the mannequin, which imitated a child aged 3 years, also remained in the chair, but the body moved forward greatly, therefore, the crash test score dropped to 17 points.

In the car, you can disable the function so that the airbag is activated, and therefore the child car seat can even be installed in the front seat of the car, but only against the direction of the car.

There is one thing - it is impossible to determine the state, so to speak, of the airbag activity, since information about this is not displayed on the Duster dashboard.

Pedestrian safety

A video of a crash test made not so long ago, or rather in 2016, proves that the Renault Duster “does not like” and can easily injure pedestrians, and therefore the score is 28 percent, and a complete failure in this test. The front edge of the hood and, accordingly, the bumper severely injure the legs of pedestrians caught under the wheels. Although, I wonder what kind of passenger car won’t cripple you. But, apparently, our test model is very cruel in this regard. The body can also cause extremely serious injuries in the head area. And this time the test result was 10 points.

Without exception, all the active enhanced safety features of the Renault Duster tested are concentrated and contained in one service, which notifies you that the seat belt is not fastened. And then the car received almost the lowest rating - only 2 points. And deservedly so. The overall score for active and effective safety was 29 points. The built-in airbags, which are intended for both the driver and even all passengers, raised the rating somewhat higher. But it is worth noting that they are simply not included in the basic new configuration, and separately, as an option, they are very expensive.

However, experts say that there is no need to panic, since on some cars that drive around Russia, the only means of safety is a small icon installed on the dashboard. The Mercedes Benz Citan Combi has exactly the same rating, while the Jeep Compass model received only 2 stars.

What are the results

An interesting fact is that last year the Renault Clio model was officially declared the safest in its segment. It’s not for nothing that the “French” Renault Duster is not sold in Europe at all, and the Clio is not sold in the Russian Federation.

If we take into account that our car is a budget car, then the overall rating is satisfactory, around a C, not so bad. Plus, the developers of the model, based on the results of watching the crash test video, learned a lesson, and have already officially announced that the car of the 2017 model year will be sold equipped with the most modern safety systems, as well as with some computer assistants for the driver himself.

Every modern car is required to pass certification tests for safety. This is no longer a tradition, but the responsibility of the manufacturer, since a car cannot be approved for sale without scoring a certain number of crash test points. EuroNCAP standards are considered one of the most objective in the world. There are also a number of independent organizations, which are also not prevented from bashing new cars, but such tests rather have a cognitive function.

Renault Duster in our market

The official test of the Renault Duster according to EuroNCAP standards was carried out in 2011 just before the premiere in Russia. Since then, some changes have been made to the car's design, but they would not have significantly affected the results of the test four years ago. If we talk about Renault Duster tests, then other, no less serious tests of the car were carried out. Their results are no less important to us than the results of a crash test.

There are several independent organizations that conduct consumer long-term tests of new cars. Renault Duster in the 4x4 version also passed such a test drive. The resource test involves driving a car in extreme conditions, at the highest and lowest temperatures, on all possible types of road surfaces, and for crossovers and SUVs, selecting appropriate off-road routes.

Video review and test drive of Renault Duster 2016

The resource mileage includes 28,100 km of roads, which is equivalent to 100,000 km of normal driving. The all-wheel drive Duster passed this off-road hell with dignity, but with some amendments that Renault tried to take into account and make appropriate changes to the design. Which was implemented a few years later in the new 2017 Duster, with a 2 hp engine. and automatic transmission. That was later, but first the Frenchman had to undergo a crash test to the full extent of EuroNCAP standards.

How does the EuroNCAP crash test work?

EuroNCAP is an organization founded in 1977 by the governments of seven European countries and a number of consumer organizations. During its existence, the organization has raised the bar for car safety to a new level, and even the most formidable sharks of the automotive industry not only in Europe, but also in the USA, Japan and Asian countries cannot ignore the conclusions of their experts.

The test takes place in several stages, and in each of them certain criteria are set, which are used to determine the overall safety rating of the car. During the test the following are assessed:

  • Safety of the driver and adult passengers
  • Child passenger safety
  • Pedestrian safety

The effectiveness of devices that are responsible for safety

To evaluate these parameters, EuroNCAP conducts three crash tests. The most common type of accident is a frontal impact, so the organization’s specialists simulate the conditions of a car colliding at a speed of 64 km/h with a barrier covering 40% of the car’s area on the left. The next stage is a side kick. A trolley weighing 950 kg hits the car in the area of the B-pillar. The speed of the cart is 50 km/h. The third stage is a side collision with a pole.

Crash test - simulating car collision conditions at speed

During all tests, dummies equipped with sensors are placed in the car, from which readings are instantly taken, and on their basis, experts draw a conclusion about the severity of injuries received by the driver and passengers. A separate test for pedestrians is also carried out.

Crash test Renault Duster

According to the conclusion of the EuroNCAP commission, Renault Duster received three stars out of five possible. For a low-budget crossover, this is a completely predictable result. When developing the design of power units, much attention was paid to economy, so many issues that influenced the test results could have been prevented. But accessibility and simplification of the design by any means could not but affect safety.

As a result, the safety of adult passengers and the driver received 11 points. During a frontal impact, sensors on the dummies showed severe pressure experienced by the chest of the driver and front passengers. The dashboard poses a certain danger if the driver’s build differs from the dummy that was driving. During a side impact, the door of the Duster opened, and this affected the rigidity of the body, so the rating was reduced to 7.2 points. The collision with the pole caused the vehicle's trunk door to open. Overall rating - 2.5 points.

Child occupant safety was assessed using Britax Roemer BabySafe ISOFIX child seats for an 18-month-old child and Britax Roemer Duo Plus for a 36-month-old child. Safety was rated at 23 points, which is a very good result. At the same time, it is possible to install a child seat in the front seat, since the front passenger airbag has a deactivation function. According to the results of pedestrian safety tests, Renault Duster showed only 10 points, or 28%, which indicates that the pedestrian received injuries incompatible with life in a collision.

The test involved a Duster 1.5 diesel in the Laureate configuration, which includes a seat belt load limiter, front and side airbags to protect the head and chest. The test was conducted in 2011, and designers always have the opportunity to correct the situation. Three stars, given the Duster’s limited equipment, cannot be considered a failure, but I still want to hope that the designers will be able to make a good, safe car out of a budget crossover.

Often very different cars are sold under the same name in Western Europe and emerging markets. And if only the difference was in appearance or equipment list! In the case of cars for Latin America and Asia, automakers often save on installing equipment that directly affects safety: this is a stabilization system, ABS, belt pretensioners, airbags and even cheap body amplifiers. There are many examples: Latin American ones, which performed noticeably worse in crash tests than their counterparts for the European market. Renault Duster for India can now be added to the same list.

Let us remind you that the Dacia Duster crossover, assembled at a plant in Pitesti, Romania, was destroyed by specialists of the Euro NCAP committee back in 2011. The result was not outstanding: during a frontal impact, the load on the chest of the front riders was increased. But thanks to four airbags (front and side), the Romanian crossover earned an honest three Euro NCAP stars.

But the Renault Duster produced at the plant in Chennai, India, does not have airbags as standard. And in tests conducted by Global NCAP, it did not receive a single point or star for protecting front occupants. Although the crash tests here are not as severe as those of the Europeans (only a frontal impact is carried out, without a side impact). Global NCAP experts called the driver's head protection extremely weak. The load on the torso and hips of both mannequins was also high.

At Renault's request, the car was retested in a richer configuration with one airbag. Naturally, the result was better: nine points out of seventeen possible, or three stars for driver and front passenger protection. But this car also performed far from exemplary: the mannequin’s head slipped off the dome of the pillow, and the chest protection turned out to be insufficient.

Interestingly, the Duster for the Latin American market achieved a more outstanding result: four stars. It turned out that the Brazilian car has a larger airbag, which provides better protection for the head and chest.

As for the Russian market, Renault Duster crossovers assembled in Moscow are already equipped with one driver’s airbag as standard. A front airbag for a passenger is offered for an additional fee starting from the “second” Expression version, and side airbags - from the “third” Privilege version, and only the most expensive Luxe Privilege version, priced at under a million, offers all four airbags at no extra charge.

Content

2015 for the Renault Duster did not bring significant safety improvements compared to 2011, when the first crash test was carried out. As many stars as he received then, his new version was rated the same: 3 stars. This is neither a high score nor a failure.

The Renault Duster test video is not impressive. But keeping in mind its democratic nature, thanks to which it is beyond competition, we can advise drivers to be more careful while driving this car and carefully observe the speed limit.

Adult protection

According to the test results, Duster demonstrated the protection of adult passengers on the Middle level. Thus, the chest of the driver and the passenger sitting in front was unprotected. During a front impact, the pressure exerted on the chest was significant, also due to the seat belts. The design of the dashboard is dangerous for serious injuries to the driver. Knees, legs and other organs are not at great risk. But experts lowered the safety rating for the luggage compartment door opening during a stern impact.

Side impact and it turned out to be still more dangerous. The reason for this is the driver's door that opens when there is a side impact. In the event of a collision with a static object while sliding sideways, the chest again suffers, which is not typical for an SUV. The stern collision showed a risk of spinal injuries in the cervical region. In almost any case, the Duster, due to insufficient rigidity of the body, injures the ribs of the passengers sitting in front.

Child protection

Thanks to the fact that the safety of small passengers in the Renault Duster was slightly taller than adults, the commission's assessment has increased. Thus, children under one and a half years old are protected at a high level, provided they use child seats. In the rear seat, a displacement of the torso of a child over three years old was recorded during a frontal impact, but it was assessed as not dangerous. However, experts do not recommend transporting children over three years old in the front seat: the car does not have an alarm indicating when the front airbag is disabled, which means the driver is not always aware of the degree of protection of the child.

The edge of the Renault Duster hood is quite sharp and hard, hence high risk of injury for pedestrians in a collision. The legs and pelvic area are particularly potentially affected. A child pedestrian’s head can also be seriously damaged. Unfortunately, Duster cannot be called safe for pedestrian road users.

All cars leaving the assembly line for the wide market must undergo a series of tests. The key element of the tests is the crash test - checking the strength of the car in collisions. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of car safety for the driver and passengers. The increase in the number of accidents on the roads only stimulates interest in the test results among potential buyers.

Demanded "French"

The Renault concern quickly captured the budget crossover market by releasing a new model, the Duster, 5 years ago. Low cost, combined with excellent technical characteristics and a presentable appearance, made the model a sales leader in several regions at once, providing the company with impressive profits.

Passing mandatory independent examinations is an integral part of vehicle production. It’s worth mentioning right away that the Renault Duster produced for Russia has not yet passed the crash test (there is definitely no data on this). But the European analogue - Dacia Duster - has undergone the procedure and there is an opportunity to analyze the results obtained.

The general public has at their disposal the results of tests carried out by specialists from EuroNCAP - a reputable European organization that conducts independent crash tests with a detailed safety assessment. The results of the company's work are recognized by all experts in the world.

EuroNCAP and Duster: how it went

All information that is freely available depends on the Renault Duster crash test conducted in 2011. A detailed study carried out by company employees allows us to get a complete picture of the level of protection for passengers in possible collisions. When developing the crossover concept, the priority was to create a low market value for the car. Therefore, many buyers are skeptical about the quality of the car and its reliability and durability. Even though this test is several years old, its analysis suggests otherwise.

General overview of the test

EuroNCAP specialists chose for study the Duster 1.5 DCi “Laureate” LHD model, with a total weight of 1180 kg.

The equipment of this car includes the following security system elements:

  • Seat belts with pressure limiters.
  • Front airbags for driver and passenger.
  • Side airbags. They provide protection to the chest and head.

The tests examined the protection of not only passengers, but also pedestrians. For the latter, the car turned out to be quite dangerous.

  • Safety level for adult passengers:

Frontal collisions were used to test the safety of the driver and passengers. Analysis of sensors installed on mannequins and cropped video footage allowed us to determine the following results:

When impacted from the front, there is significant pressure on the chest of the driver and front passenger.

If the driver is larger than the dummy, there is a risk of serious injury.

The result of the study is 11 points and “average level”.

2 additional tests were also carried out:

  • Side impact. Due to the driver's door opening, the final score was reduced to 7.2 points.
  • Collision with a pole. This test revealed low chest protection and the final score was 6 points.
  • Rear-end collision. Such an incident can lead to serious injuries to the cervical vertebrae. Therefore, the lowest score is 2.5.

The approach to the level of safety of young passengers in Duster has earned positive reviews from experts. The car scored the maximum points in this category.

During the test, 2 dummies were placed in the back seat, which correspond to children 1.5 and 3 years old. As a result of the frontal and side collisions, the mannequins remained in their places and practically did not move. In the front seat, it is possible to place a child seat rearward facing the car, with the airbag turned off.

The car's design is not designed to take care of pedestrians. The massive bumper causes serious injuries to the legs, and the hood causes damage to the pedestrian's head. In this segment of the test the car received only 10 points.

  • Active safety system level:

The active protection and warning system only has seat belt sensors. That’s why the score Duster received is so low – only 2.

The crash test studies the side impact with a pole, which is often ignored. For Duster, this research is important, since due to the short wheelbase, the car can lose stability and receive a similar side impact.

The final result of the Renault Duster crash test is 3 stars out of 5 possible. Not a bad level for a crossover in this market segment.
