Technical characteristics of Skoda Yeti table. The first Czech SUV is the Skoda Yeti. Line of power units

In 2009, the Czech model Skoda Yeti literally burst into the Russian crossover car market. The Yeti (that is, the “Bigfoot”) conquered primarily with its excellent technical characteristics and comfort, providing significant competition to such models as the Nissan Qashqai, Mitsubishi ASX, Hyundai ix35 or Kia Sportage.

"Yeti" in colors and dimensions

The Skoda Yeti was created on the Volkswagen A5 platform, which is quite logical: in 1990, Volkswagen AG became a co-owner of the Skoda company, which merged with the German concern, which had previously absorbed the German Audi and the Spanish Seat.

It must be said that the idea of creating an SUV (and in terms of driving performance, the Skoda Yeti is very close to this class of cars, which will be discussed below) did not arise out of nowhere. Since the 30s of the last century, the automobile enterprise had experience in creating army and even tanks (there is a legend that the last of three hundred Czech-made light tanks was knocked out in 1941 near Moscow).

Of course, “Yeti” neither externally nor internally even remotely hints at the turbulent military past of the Skoda brand. The exterior of the car is moderately peaceful, but still not without a hint of its off-road purpose: the overall dimensions of the Skoda Yeti (length 4.22, width 1.8, height 1.65 meters) and most importantly the ground clearance increased to 18 cm indicate clearly extraordinary abilities, which are fully manifested in the all-wheel drive version.

The body colors of the Skoda Yeti also offer the opportunity to choose between an aggressive SUV and a peace-loving SUV. There are exactly a dozen of them - from neutral white and silver to brutal black and green.

Skoda Yeti body palette:

  • black
  • red
  • burgundy
  • brown
  • green
  • blue
  • blue
  • grey
  • beige
  • silver
  • white.

Trunk space and interior comfort

Matching the external dimensions of the car is the interior, the height of which is from 1.08 m in the front to 1.03 m in the rear. The luggage compartment is very spacious even with the rear seats folded down - 410 liters, and in their folded position - up to 1760 liters.

It must be said that the designers treated the back row of seats of the five-seater station wagon with special love, making it transformable. The so-called VarioFlex system, where a row consists of three separate seats, allows, in the absence of a central one, to move the outer seats towards each other by 8 cm each. The panoramic roof, which is also equipped with a sunroof and an electric blind, allows passengers to do some distracting and entertaining activity during the trip, for example, counting crows.

In general, the interior, made in the original two-tone design, is very comfortable: full power accessories and such pleasant little things as many trunks and glove compartments for small items create the maximum comfort possible when traveling by car.

Increased attention is paid to the safety of the driver and passengers. Depending on the configuration, a pair of front ones can be supplemented with four side ones. Crash tests of the Yeti showed exceptional results in terms of vehicle reliability, receiving the highest rating according to Euro NCAP. Passive safety includes such original technological solutions as bi-xenon headlights with cornering lights, as well as more than a dozen other driver aids from traction control (ABS) to forced stability control (DSR).

Moreover, even such a moment as “interference from behind” is taken into account, that is, during sharp braking, the emergency stop signals are automatically turned on.

  • Basic security systems of Skoda Yeti;
  • reliable body, reinforced with a technologically designed system of stiffeners;
  • Isofix child seat fastening mechanism;
  • differential blocking system for heterogeneous road surfaces (EDL);
  • up to nine airbags (optional)

Technical characteristics of the Skoda Yeti

From the point of view of the power content of the car, today there are four engine options for the Yeti on the market, duplicating Volkswagen ones: gasoline engines with a volume of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 liters and a two-liter diesel engine. All of them are turbocharged, with power ranging from 105 to 152 hp. With. Moreover, the record belongs not to a diesel unit, which develops maximum torque at speeds of 1800-2500 per minute, but to a 1.8 liter internal combustion engine, the maximum output occurs in the mode from 1500 to 4500 rpm. True, the fuel consumption of this Skoda Yeti model is noticeably higher: on the highway - 7-8 l/100 km, in the city - 11-12 liters (subject to a non-aggressive driving style). For comparison: the weakest 1.2 liter engine consumes almost the same amount of gasoline as a two-liter diesel engine - 6-7 liters per 100 km.

Modifications of WV engines on the Skoda Yeti coupled with transmission

  • 1.2 TSI MT
  • 1.2 TSI DSG
  • 1.4 TSI MT
  • 1.4 TSI DSG
  • 1.6 MPI MT
  • 1.6 MPI AT
  • -1.8 TSI DSG 4×4
  • 2.0 TDI DSG 4x4

Of course, this indicator depends not only on the load of the car, the driver’s driving style and the number of traffic jams on the way, but also on the type of gearbox. There are two types of them in the Skoda Yeti: manual transmission (5- or 6-speed) and robotic (7 gears). The latter is similar in principle to conventional “mechanics”, only the clutch torque is provided not by pressing the pedal, but by an automatic hydraulic or servo drive with a signal from an electronic processor. He is entrusted with the moment of changing pairs of clutch gears to change the gear ratio from high to low and vice versa.

The undoubted advantage of the “robot” box in the main component of the unit is that it is mechanical. The rest is electronics, which provide optimal modes when the clutch is activated, especially if it is double, stimulating a smooth transition to the next gear. True, the electronic “brains” of the gearbox fail more often than the nerve endings of a living person, which allow you to engage the clutch with your left foot at the right time. But it is rare enough to last 100-200 thousand kilometers, following the recommendations for car maintenance. But for women and lazy men it is quite convenient.

But for active drivers and fans (including winter ones), “mechanics” are more suitable. The manual transmission on the Yeti is soft, as they say, obedient. In off-road conditions, this is the most suitable option, ensuring that prolonged driving in snow and mud under increased loads will not create problems with gear shifting.

"Yeti" all-wheel drive

Well, if we started talking seriously about the transmission, it would be simply a crime not to talk about drive systems for transmitting torque to the drive wheels.

As already mentioned, the Yeti is available with two transmission options: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. With the lonely leading front end, everything is clear: a purely “SUV” for urban operating conditions with a claim to permissiveness. By the way, this arrangement is common not only in crossovers of the SUV class (according to the European classification, which includes the Skoda Yeti), but also in more brutal cars, a priori designed for off-road use, for example, the legendary American Jeep Cherokee.

But with all-wheel drive, the Yeti is much more interesting. It is necessary to make a reservation right away: Yeti will crawl almost everywhere - through mud, through slush, and in snowdrifts, but not in a deep rut, which will land the body on the bridges, and your “bigfoot” will helplessly flounder with its paws into the void, not catching with its wheels hard ground.

“It’s all-wheel drive, it has to get out!” the Yeti owners are indignant. As one good trophy raider said, “remember, son, four-wheel drive doesn’t owe anyone anything.” Even a lifted Land Rover Defender is powerless in a deep rut. Like our UAZ and GAZ cars, recognized leaders in overcoming forests, swamps, sands and other Russian evil spirits.

But on flat (relative to 18-centimeter ground clearance, of course) snow, in mud, in swamps, the Yeti has something to surprise the owner. The rear pair is not forcibly connected here, but using a Haldex coupling, the control of which depends on the readings of the sensors of the engine control unit, the ABS system and other components that control the operating parameters of the engine and chassis. At low speeds (up to 30 km/h), an off-road auxiliary complex operates separately, which controls the transmission when starting off on ice, mud and other slippery surfaces. Off-road provides the opposite function - holding the car during extreme descents.

The anti-slip mechanism (ABS) is also original: in extreme mode, it temporarily blocks the rotation of the wheels so that a “snowdrift” of soil forms in front of the tread, which ensures further movement of the car. For the honorary title of “Absolute SUV”, the Yeti lacks full inter-axle (although there are no axles here - independent suspension) and inter-wheel locking. Although, on the other hand, why do they exist if electronics rule?

Restyling Skoda Yeti

Of course, not all of the Skoda Yeti features and options listed above are present on the base model. Over the course of seven years, the car was supplemented with new options, mostly unimportant, but also other organs of perception. Today there are three trim levels - Active, Ambition and Elegance, differing mainly in the interior. And let the buyer not be confused by other names assigned to this noble car, such as: - Yeti Outdoor - Yeti Monte-Carlo - New Superb - New Superb Combi - Hockey Edition - Kodiaq.

The difference is in the country of sale, but inside and out it’s still the same good, reliable Skoda Yeti from 2009. Unless modernized.

In 2013, a redesign took place, called the fashionable word “restyling,” but essentially changed little in the car. Light was added to the headlights, the front decorative grille was slightly changed... The already mentioned panoramic roof with a sunroof for “selfies” appeared, as well as a rear view camera for comfortable parking.

By the way, the latest configuration of the Yeti has a car parking system, when it is better not to touch the steering wheel: the controller will park the car itself, provided that the driver does not press the accelerator pedal.

Still, the Yeti was not created for parking. His element is active drive, which does not go beyond the boundaries of a well-thought-out country trip. Whether in summer or winter, it certainly won’t let you down in solving such a problem.

SHOW

COLLAPSE

The dimensions of the Skoda Yeti (dimensions, weight, interior and trunk volume) are recognized as perhaps the most successful among other products of the Czech company. The latter was bought by a well-known German concern in 2000, but this only benefited it - judging by the model we are describing, which can safely be called a model of comfort.

Dimensions

The owners of this model characterize it as a compact and comfortable car. This is evidenced by the dimensions and technical characteristics of the Skoda Yeti:

  • length / width / height – 4223, 1793, 1691 mm, respectively
  • weight – 1920 kg;
  • tank volume – 60 l;
  • departure and arrival angles are 26.7 and 19 degrees.

Similar parameters and weight are present in the main competitors of the brainchild of the Czech automobile industry, among which there are such giants as Mitsubishi, Peugeot and Citroen. However, unlike them, Skoda managed to celebrate its anniversary long ago, having sold 100,000 crossovers. The company decided to repeat the success and in 2014 released another modification of the “snowy” car, making it more impressive. Now the Skoda Yeti has a more expressive bumper and improved fog lights.

Salon and trunk

A paradise for rationalists - this is how the contents of this machine can be described. The car interior is distinguished by its impressive dimensions, sufficient for the people inside to feel comfortable. The rear seats of the Skoda Yeti are equipped with a special system that allows you to transform each of them, thereby somewhat changing the volume of the interior itself.

If necessary, the loading space of the model is increased to 1760 liters. This can be achieved by folding the rear seatbacks or folding them down to the front ones. Then we will become the owners of a very spacious trunk, so that when going on vacation at sea, we no longer need to worry about where to put our suitcases filled to the brim with things.

The trunk volume of our model is 405 liters, which in itself is quite good. The trunk opening is also quite wide, and the edge is located somewhere at a distance of 712 mm from the ground surface. Probably because of such successful parameters, this car was once recognized as the most convenient for travel.

Additional comfort is created by the presence of many compartments where you can place cups, umbrellas and other necessary little things. There are compartments throughout the cabin and in the trunk, including under the driver's seat (for a protective vest). And passengers sitting in the back can, in addition, use a dining table or construct comfortable armrests from the middle backrest. That's it - simple and rational.

Clearance

For those who don't know, ground clearance (or ground clearance, as the Russians call it) is the distance from the surface to the bottom of the car. Most often, clearance is calculated relative to the front of the car, since it turns out to be the lowest due to the engine located in it. When buying a car, you must first find out its ground clearance: the higher this indicator, the less likely it is to crash the car on some curb.

In our case, the ground clearance is 180 mm. This ground clearance is quite common, and it is quite enough for traveling through the harshest edges of our country without fear from Skoda Yeti owners.

However, when the car is heavily loaded, the clearance indicator decreases: its dimensions can be 157 cm. In order to avoid such a situation, it is worth resorting to tricks known to most motorists - for example, using thicker tires or installing sports shock absorbers on the suspension.

By the way, since we are talking about the lower part of the car, we need to clarify something else - we mean the size of the tires in the Skoda Yeti. It remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of one of the early models, and was specified as 215/60R16. The first digit of the code indicates the size of the tires in width (225 mm) and the second - in height (50 mm). The next letter R indicates their radial type, after which the diameter is indicated. The size of the disks for various modifications also remained constant (16 × 7.0, if expressed in the language of official markings).

In conclusion, we would like to add that in 2014 the Skoda Yeti was released in two variations, which differ at least slightly from each other, including in parameters. So it’s better to clarify the details you are interested in when purchasing.

The Czech automobile company Skoda took a serious and responsible approach to the design and preparation for serial production of its first crossover, the Skoda Yeti. Having shown the Yeti Concept prototype back at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the Czechs spent four long years bringing their brainchild to perfect condition.

The premiere of the serial crossover Skoda Yeti took place in 2009 there, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Regular visitors to the exhibition were able to note a pleasant fact - the production-ready Czech SUV managed to retain the original appearance of the Four-year-old Yeti Concept.
In Russia, car enthusiasts were able to see the first crossover from Škoda in the fall of 2009, when the car appeared in car showrooms. Almost three years have passed since the start of sales, which is enough time to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the car. As part of the review, we will try to find out whether the Czech company Skoda managed to successfully “bake” its first crossover and whether it turned out to be “lumpy”.

From the moment of its debut to this day, the appearance of the Skoda Yeti has not undergone any changes. The front of the car has four original headlights, round ones serve as daytime running lights and double as foglights, rectangular segments are responsible for low and high beams. The radiator grille is designed in the Skoda family style and is decorated with a chrome strip on top, a powerful bumper with a lower air duct framed by a silver frame. When viewed from the front, the Skoda Yeti is recognizable and original; it is impossible to confuse the Czech crossover with another car even in the dark.
In profile, the Yeti SUV demonstrates the organic image of a station wagon, raised high above the road. The sloping hood and powerful wheel arches with characteristic stampings easily accommodate tires on 215/60 R16 or 225/50 R17 wheels. Large glass area, high and flat roof, vertical rear part. Calm and strict, complete absence of aggression, every line and bend of the body is aimed at functionality and practicality.
The crossover looks compact, and its external dimensions confirm this. With body dimensions of length - 4223 mm, width - 1793 mm, height - 1691 mm and wheelbase dimensions - 2578 mm, the car is smaller than its main competitors Kia Sportage, SsangYong Actyon, Suzuki Grand Vitara and even Nissan Qashqai. The ground clearance of the Skoda Yeti, according to the manufacturer, is 180 mm; in real conditions, measurements show other figures - 165-167 mm, which will not be enough even for an SUV. The approach angle also turned out to be very small, only 18.5 degrees (the front bumper can easily be torn off). I'm glad that the exhaust system and transmission are located in the cavity of the central tunnel, there is protection for the engine compartment, the bottom is flat with polymer coating, the only concerns are the strongly protruding rear suspension arms and the gas tank.

The rear of the crossover has a large and comfortable tailgate, a bumper made of unpainted plastic with an insert at the bottom a la a diffuser, and neat side lamps. An original solution in the form of contrasting (black) rear roof pillars to the main color, along with large side and rear windows, gives the car lightness and makes the interior brighter.

Let’s summarize the appearance data and the readiness of the Skoda Yeti body for driving off the asphalt surface. The car is compact and well-built. We can safely say it’s stylish, the quality of the bodywork and anti-corrosion treatment are correct in German, the elements of the transmission and chassis are protected from off-road surprises, but... before leaving the hard surface, think again and calculate the trajectory of the geometric cross-country ability.

The interior of the Skoda Yeti is well assembled from high-quality materials, but over time, interior elements begin to creak when driving over uneven roads. The driver's seat has hard padding, widely spaced lateral support bolsters (thin owners lack body support in corners) and an upright seating position. Getting a perfect seat behind the wheel is a difficult task; even in a car equipped with an electric driver's seat, your back gets tired on a long journey.
The steering wheel is of optimal size with telescopic adjustment for height and depth, the instruments in two separate wells are beautiful and informative, and the on-board computer screen is located between them. The front dashboard and center console are of a classic configuration, the placement of controls is logical and does not cause problems of long getting used to.
The basic Active version, however, only has audio preparation, but with the next Ambition configuration for the Skoda Yeti, a 2DIN radio with CD MP3 and 8 speakers is available, in rich Elegance music with a Maxi Dot multifunctional color display. The two initial trim levels are equipped with air conditioning, and the maximum trim level is equipped with dual-zone climate control.
The first row seats are heated and microlift. In the second row, thanks to the VarioFlex system (longitudinal adjustment and tilt of the backrest of the side seats, folding the seats and complete dismantling), three passengers with a height of 190 cm can comfortably accommodate. There is enough space for both legs and head. But the high transmission tunnel will interfere with those sitting in the center. The middle chair can be removed altogether, and the two side chairs can be moved closer to the center (there is room for both).

The trunk of the Skoda Yeti crossover is small by the standards of the class and can accommodate from 405 to 510 liters (depending on the position of the rear seats) with five passengers. Folding the rear row we get 1580 liters, and removing the rear seats from the cabin - 1760 liters of usable volume.
Inside, the Skoda Yeti is cozy and comfortable; getting in and out of the car is convenient thanks to the wide doors that open to a wide angle, but there are some small shortcomings. Owners complain about the small glove box, miniature rear-view mirrors, quickly dirty sills (they saved on rubber door seals) and the glass of the fifth door.

If we talk about the technical characteristics of the Skoda Yeti, then this Czech crossover is built on the Skoda Octavia platform, from its sister company Yeti it inherited a completely independent suspension (MacPherson strut in front, multi-link in the rear), all-wheel drive transmission with a Haldex clutch (4th generation).
The Skoda Yeti crossover for the Russian market is available with three gasoline engines:

  • 1.2 TSI (105 hp) with 6 manual gearboxes or 7 automatic gearboxes (DSG) and front-wheel drive, acceleration to 100 km/h in 11.8 (12.0) seconds with a top speed of 175 (173) km/h, average fuel consumption 6.4 (6.6) liters. From owner reviews, the average fuel consumption is 1-1.5 liters more, it all depends on the driving style. The initial engine of 105 “horses” is clearly not enough for a car weighing under 1400 kg; many owners reflash the engine control unit and increase the engine output to 120 hp. (the car becomes “more lively”, fuel consumption remains at the same level).
  • 1.4 TSI (122 hp) with 6 manual gearboxes (or DSG) and front-wheel drive, dynamics up to “hundreds” in 10.5 seconds. at “maximum speed” 185 km/h, average fuel consumption is 6.8 liters.
  • 1.8 TSI (152 hp) with 6 manual gearboxes or 6 automatic gearboxes (DSG) and an all-wheel drive system, the most powerful engine installed on the crossover provides acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.7 (9.0) seconds, with a maximum speed 196 (192) km/h, fuel consumption in mixed operating mode is 8.0 liters. This is a truly crossover, with a powerful and torquey engine, and most importantly, with all-wheel drive and an Off-road mode that helps on descents.

We won’t talk for long about the off-road potential of the Czech Skoda Yeti; the car is really poorly suited for storming rough terrain. And many owners do not risk leaving the hard surface of the road; city crossovers, to which the hero of our review belongs, are a class of cars artificially created by marketers.
Here is the asphalt for the Skoda Yeti - this is the native element, the car demonstrates excellent handling and informative steering, the rigid and short-travel suspension sensitively holds the road at almost any speed, and how pleasant it is to take turns in the Yeti... It’s a thrill, it feels like you’re behind the wheel hot hatchback. The suspension settings, of course, make themselves felt when passing speed bumps, especially in the rear of the car.

To summarize our review, I would like to say that the Yeti turned out to be distinctive and original, with modern technical features and a cozy interior that provides a lot of opportunities for transformation.

Let’s say right away that the Skoda Yeti is assembled at the factories in Mlada Boleslavl (Czech Republic) and GAZ (Nizhny Novgorod). In 2012, the price of the Skoda Yeti for the Russian market starts at 739,000 rubles for the Active package (1.2 TSI / 105 hp with 6 manual gearboxes, which includes: air conditioning, audio preparation, Servotronic power steering, tires on steel wheels 215/60 R16 ).
The cost of the Skoda Yeti 4x4 1.8 TSI (152 hp) with 6 automatic transmission (DSG) in the rich Elegance package starts from 1,089,000 rubles (climate control, Maxi Dot display, tires on Dolomite 225/50 R17 alloy wheels, cruise control, parking sensors ).
By ordering additional options in the form of a leather interior, a navigator, bi-xenon headlights, a parking assistant and other “tricks”, we will raise the price of the 2012 Skoda Yeti to almost 1,500,000 rubles.

The characteristics of the Skoda Yeti crossover make it very attractive to potential buyers. An economical engine, a convenient gearbox, a spacious trunk, a comfortable interior - these are just some of the advantages of the Yeti.

The Skoda Yeti is based on the Volkswagen A5 modification PQ35. The compact dimensions of this car ensure its maneuverability and easy handling. The technical characteristics of the five-door Skoda Yeti crossover largely depend on its modification. Thus, the car can be equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine with a capacity of 1.2-2 liters, supplied with a 6-speed manual transmission or 6/7-speed DSG, while having all-wheel drive or only front-wheel drive.

Main characteristics

Regardless of the modification, all Skoda Yeti cars have the following unchanged characteristics:

  • body - station wagon,
  • trunk threshold height - 712 mm,
  • front and rear wheel track - 1541 mm,
  • ground clearance - 180 mm,
  • fuel tank capacity - 60 l,
  • turning diameter - 10.4 m,
  • presence of electromechanical power steering,
  • trunk volume 410 l,
  • trunk capacity with seat backs retracted and lowered - 1760 l and 1580 l, respectively,
  • interior height - 1080 mm front and 1027 mm rear,
  • The width of the top beam of the body is 1446 mm at the front and 1437 mm at the rear.

Dimensions

External characteristics

The distinctive features of the Skoda Yeti are its massive bumper and radiator grille, surrounded by four headlights. The crossover profile attracts with an interesting line of the raised roof, clear contours of the rear and central pillars. The Skoda Yeti has an original and very friendly appearance, which hides high-quality units and components that provide this car with decent technical characteristics.

Interior features

The interior of this five-seater crossover is spacious and roomy. It can comfortably accommodate both people and large luggage. Thanks to the high seating position, Yeti passengers feel especially protected and also have excellent visibility. Sufficient rigidity of the seats and their shape, which follows the curve of the back of a seated person, provides increased comfort during long trips.

Thanks to the VarioFlex system, each of the three rear seats of the Skoda Yeti can be transformed, increasing loading space. Overall, the interior looks discreet and elegant. On top of that, the Skoda Yeti has a large panoramic sunroof, consisting of two parts and controlled by an electronic system.

Line of power units

Depending on the modification, the Skoda Yeti may have:

  • 1.2 TFSI is a gasoline engine with a displacement of 1197 cm3 and a power of 105 hp. With. It consumes from 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km on the highway to 8 liters in city mode. Used in combination with a manual 6-speed gearbox or automatic 7 DSG. Installed on front-wheel drive versions. Skoda Yeti with such an engine reaches speeds of up to 175 km/h, accelerating from the start to 100 km/h in 12 seconds. The weight of Yeti, equipped with such an engine, is 1340 kg (curb) and 1885 kg (full).
