Michelin summer tire tests. Summer Michelin tire models

The editors of Autonavigator began organizing their regular tire tests together with the team of the online store nonstopgumi in the fall of 2012, and this year the magazine again conducted the largest tire tests in Hungary. This time the tires were tested again at the test site in Mogyorod, but the tire size had changed. Although the most popular tires in the country remain the size 195/65 R15, tires of size 205/55 R16 are increasingly in demand, especially in the summer tire segment, which is why they are being compared in this year’s test. The tests also feature new cars - not only in the sense that these were the first Seat Leon STs, but also in the sense that one car only drove 1,200 km and the other 1,600 km.

The test procedure itself remained unchanged, and experts assessed tire parameters such as braking efficiency and handling on dry and wet asphalt, noise and rolling resistance on dry pavement, and tire wear resistance. The tests were carried out at a temperature slightly above 15 degrees.

A total of 17 sets of tires were tested - 15 summer and two winter, one of which was new, and the second was already worn out, but still in good condition. The winner of last year's test was taken as a sample of winter tires. In addition, the tests involved worn-out summer tires manufactured seven years ago and still having a sufficiently large tread depth, but stored in suboptimal conditions, and Michelin CrossClimate, characterized as “summer tires certified for winter conditions.” There were no “purebred” all-season tires on the list of participants this time.

Since the test was deliberately conducted relatively late, new products of the season, such as the Bridgestone Turanza T005, managed to get into it. Bridgestone tires showed excellent results on dry surfaces, where they were quite a bit slower in terms of speed and braking efficiency, but still outperformed Michelin Primacy 4 tires. At the same time, Michelin took the lead on the wet track, taking first places in both disciplines, whereas Bridgestone has a relatively long braking distance in such conditions. Michelin CrossClimate demonstrated very high braking efficiency on dry surfaces, and in addition, winter tires in new condition unexpectedly showed good results - which cannot be said about worn tires.

The winter tires, made from a soft rubber compound, ranked high in the noise test, second only to the Michelin CrossClimate. In the fuel economy test, the best were worn summer and winter tires, which rolled longer than others with the engine turned off. If we talk about wear resistance, this year most tires received the highest rating. At the same time, questions arose with other tires, and, for example, the Laufenn showed pronounced wear after just 10 runs in the braking performance tests. The Infinities, which were literally smoking after dry braking tests, wear out even faster, and the Taurus also has to be considered one of the shortest-lasting tires. In addition, the Michelin CrossClimate will wear out quickly with intensive use, since their rubber compound has been modified for use on snow.

The weight of the ratings was determined as follows: braking on dry asphalt - 30%, braking on wet asphalt - 20%, wear resistance - 15%, handling on dry and wet asphalt and rolling resistance - 10% each, noise - 5%. Ultimately, the best tires were Michelin Primacy 4, but it is worth saying that tires from Bridgestone, Goodyear and Pirelli also showed very good performance. In addition, Hankook received high praise, which at the same time have an attractive price. Michelin CrossClimate received only a "Satisfactory" rating due to high wear, but even so, it was able to beat the Infinity, Taurus and Semperit tires. Only Laufenn received a “Weak” rating, while worn tires of both types and cheap Daytons were not recommended.

The tires of the size we have chosen remain the most popular on the Russian market (although there is a trend towards a transition to 17‑ and even 18‑inch wheels). The rather high, 55% profile of the 16-inch wheels allows you to balance between good handling and tolerable ride comfort on our far from the best roads.

This standard size has the widest range of models and brands. Among the bright premieres of our test is the Pirelli Cinturato P7 tire in Blue, which has just gone on sale. And for the first time we are trying out the Bridgestone Ecopia EP200 and Toyo Proxes CF2 models.

A couple of test cars - Golfs with a non-switchable stabilization system. The tires were tested at the end of last summer in order to catch all the new products for the upcoming 2015 season. The weather during the tests was not too hot: the thermometer showed 20–25 degrees Celsius.

Higher speed - fewer potholes

There is an opinion that for driving on bad roads, tires with a higher speed index are preferable. They are supposedly stronger than slow ones. This is wrong. High speed and load capacity indices do not at all mean increased resistance of tires to impacts in potholes and curb rubbing.

The design of high-speed tires is such that it does not allow centrifugal forces to break it apart at high speed. This is often achieved by using additional reinforcing tape between the breaker and the frame. As a rule, the price to pay for this is increased rigidity and sometimes noise. But the sidewalls remain almost the same as those of slower tires. Namely, they are damaged by impacts.

There is no need to rely on tires with an increased load capacity index (tyres with an index of 90 can carry 600 kg, with an index of 91 - 615 kg, 92 - 630, 93 - 650, 94 - 670 kg), even when it is supplemented with the letters XL or the words Extra Load. Yes, tires with a high index have reinforced sidewalls and a frame, they are more durable, but their task is to carry more weight, distribute the load evenly in the contact patch, and not keep the sidewalls intact during a powerful impact. As our experience shows, after a wheel falls into a hole with sharp edges, tires with different load capacity indices are destroyed equally. The only difference is the size of the damaged areas. A stronger tire will have less of a wound, but will still have to be thrown away.

Sometimes, more often in the spring, when the holes are especially deep, we raise the tire pressure by 0.3-0.5 bar above the recommended one. This impairs wheel grip and smooth ride, but makes the tires more resistant to punctures.

TOP SIX

A serious struggle unfolded among the leaders. Six models surpassed the 900 point mark, which we consider to be an indicator of excellent tires. Rare case. It is noteworthy that five of them boast the highest efficiency. The difference between braking distances is measured in decimeters, and the speed at the changeover is measured in tenths of a kilometer per hour.

With 944 points, the updated model rose highest Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue, which on wet surfaces showed off the best braking properties and the highest speed at the changeover. In addition, it provides clear handling and excellent directional stability.

And Cinturato also had the best price-quality ratio among the leading six - 3.81. After all, for a famous tire the price of 3,600 rubles is quite modest.

Losing 18 points to the leader, the model is in second position Nokian Hakka Blue. This tire repeated the speed of the Pirelli in the wet and set a record in the dry. I lost a little while braking on dry asphalt. Those who choose this tire will certainly appreciate its positive effect on the handling and directional stability of the car. Price - 3650 rubles per piece.

The third prize was taken by the tire Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance(lost to Hakka by only one point). Experts gave her the palm in the “Comfort” category. Grip properties are high on both dry and wet roads. Goodyear let us down only in handling on dry roads: the Golf's complex behavior during extreme maneuvering limited the speed during a sharp lane change at a changeover. If you install EfficientGrip Performance on a car without ESP, then in such situations you need to be extremely careful.

Price - 3,700 rubles, price-quality ratio - 3.99 (average value among top-end tires).

Tire Michelin Primacy 3 scored 926 points and took a high fourth place. Primacy has good grip properties; it provides clear handling and directional stability. But where Michelin surpassed everyone was in price: 4,000 rubles apiece. A famous name is always expensive.

South Korean takes fifth place in the ranking Hankook Ventus Prime 2. It was this model that broke through to the initial configuration of the Mercedes S-Class, and deservedly so - 921 points in our test.

Ventus Prime 2 demonstrates high grip properties and ensures precise adherence to a given course. What prevented the car from reaching the podium were not the best fuel economy indicators and minor comments from experts regarding ride comfort and handling in extreme conditions. Hankook is offered for 3,400 rubles.

The tire is in sixth position with 913 points Continental ContiPremiumContact fifth generation. Leading braking properties on dry roads and high fuel efficiency. Other indicators range from good to excellent, but not record-breaking. Sold for 4000 rubles. The Germans, like Michelin, keep the brand.

LET'S BE MORE HUMBLE

In seventh place - Nordman SX domestic production with 890 points. The shortfall to the coveted “900” mark is only ten, less than two percent. Almost all indicators are above average; we did not encounter any difficulties or surprises in driving the car on these tires. With such indicators - only 2800 rubles per piece. The value for money ratio of 3.15 is the best in the test. Nordman deserves the title of crisis fighter.

Toyo Proxes CF2: 876 points and eighth place. The braking performance on dry asphalt is equivalent to that of the Nordman; on wet asphalt, these tires are inferior to the Nordman by about half a meter. Rearrangement on dry is a little faster, on wet a little slower. It can boast of approximate efficiency. But the level of driving comfort on Proxes CF2 tires is low. I guess not everyone is ready to put up with this. We consider the price of 3,500 rubles too high.

In ninth place with 857 points - Bridgestone Ecopia EP200. Good for fuel economy, but in our test, seven tire models gave the same result. In all other respects, it is far from a leader. The EP200 has poor grip on dry surfaces, while the Ecopia failed on wet surfaces. In extreme conditions, the handling of the Golf with these tires kept our testers on alert. You will have to be very careful when driving on a winding highway. Typically, Bridgestone brand tires are very expensive, but the price tag of this tire is relatively modest: 3,550 rubles.

Tenth place and 849 points - result Cordiant Sport 3. Braking on wet asphalt is above average, on dry asphalt - second place from the bottom. Handling on dry surfaces is difficult, but on wet surfaces it is problematic, so sudden lane changes will be successful only at low speeds. Fuel consumption was the highest in the test.

The directional stability on these tires is not the best: driving at high speed requires extreme concentration, you cannot relax even for a second. The price does not seem to be the highest - 3100 rubles, but there are better and cheaper tires.

In eleventh position Kama Euro 129. She has only 806 points in her treasury. Not enough for a modern tire. All measurement results, with the exception of average fuel consumption, are the worst. In braking on dry asphalt it loses almost six meters to the leader, on wet asphalt - four and a half. I would not maneuver sharply on these tires under any circumstances: the car could slip, and even ESP would not help. I’m not talking about ride comfort; there’s no smell of it here. The most pleasant indicator is the price, the lowest in the test: 2600 rubles.

Your boyfriend

The Volkswagen Golf is the most popular test car of all tire companies, and for good reason. Its immediate responses and crisp, clear handling make it easier for experts to assess tire performance.

The Golf has a fairly “transparent” suspension that does not hide road noise and vibrations - our testers can easily evaluate both the smoothness of the ride and the contribution of the tires to the background sound.

The stabilization system on this car does not turn off, but this is more of a plus than a minus. We initially tried removing this feature using our special equipment and found that the Golf with ESP turned off became excessively fidgety. The car had to be brought out of the skid in the initial phase, instantly and with precise movements. He delayed a little or overdid it - and in a second the Volkswagen could turn 180 degrees or fly far to the side. Scary!

We are currently testing tires without turning off ESP. The Golf's electronics are very loyal and are in no hurry to spring into action at the slightest hint of drift or drift, as, for example, in the Volvo. Our experts are able to assess and predict the behavior of the car based on the initial phases of sliding.

Car tires from the French manufacturer Michelin are among the highest quality tires in Europe and the world. That is why these tires are incredibly popular among all drivers in the world. Comfort, reliability, safety - all this is at the highest level in these tires. Many people do not understand how the French manufacturer achieved such results, why the tires are of such high quality and have excellent success in the market.

Experts conducted a large number of various tests, and the results of these tests answered all the questions. Let's try to figure out why Michelin tires are so cool, and why almost every driver wants to buy them for themselves.

Michelin tire quality

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Michelin car tires meet all modern European quality standards. All the most basic characteristics that quality tires should have are developed in Michelin tires at the highest level. First of all, it is worth noting the excellent grip on the road surface, which allows drivers to move on the road more safely.

Grip is provided by a large number of specific properties, qualities and characteristics that these tires have. This includes an optimized tread pattern, excellent rolling resistance, and excellent aquaplaning properties. Let's take a closer look at the design of Michelin car tires.

The almost ideal tread pattern in most models is asymmetrical; these tread profiles have widened grooves, thanks to which, when moving, water masses are removed from the contact patch in the shortest possible time. This also allows the rubber to adhere more tightly to the canvas, and therefore creates such an excellent grip effect.

The side part of the tires is slightly less thick than the main part, and thanks to this the car holds a straight line better and generally maneuvers well. Driving cars with such tires is a pleasure!

Michelin winter tire models

Among the winter models, it is necessary to note the presence of X-Ice Xi3 and Alpin A3. These modifications stand out from the general range of Michelin tires due to their high performance characteristics. As for the X-Ice Xi3 model, it is necessary to note the ideal grip on the road surface, which allows you to move at high speeds on icy and dangerous sections of roads in winter.

The model has an interesting design, thanks to which the car holds perfectly in a straight line. Despite the developing trend of creating models for winter use without studs from most European manufacturers, the developers of the Michelin manufacturer decided to make this modification of car tires studded. This gives the car even better traction. It is also worth highlighting the tread pattern, for the creation of which the best advanced computer technologies were used, making the pattern more optimized and suitable for winter car tires.

Thanks to this design, such characteristics as rolling resistance and water-repellent properties were perfectly highlighted, thanks to which cars with such tires can perfectly keep a straight line and stay on the road when passing through slippery areas at high speeds.

The second model, Alpin A3, has the listed characteristics of the first model no less. The same excellent grip, excellent acceleration and braking properties, excellent sound insulation - all this makes this model one of the most purchased from the Michelin manufacturer.

Unlike the first model, the A3 does not have studs in its design, but the optimal composition of the rubber mixture allows this modification of winter tires to be used on passenger cars without studs. With the help of such tires, drivers can even artificially reduce fuel consumption - due to improved speed and braking features.

Summer Michelin tire models

Among the summer modifications of Michelin tires, it is worth highlighting such models as Energy XM1 and Primacy 3. Both of these models have earned wide recognition not only in France, but throughout Europe. What is so good and out of the ordinary about them?

Many ordinary people do not have a very good attitude towards Michelin summer tires due to the fact that, according to them, such tires do not have a very good service life. This may be true on older models, but certainly not on the Energy XM1. Excellent grip and an incredibly high margin of safety allow drivers to experience true bliss from using sets of these car tires for a long time - such tires can be safely used for five seasons.

With this model of tires, you can safely drive on slippery and wet sections of the road and not be afraid that you will sooner or later lose your way - this will not happen due to the fact that these tires give excellent vehicle handling and maneuverability.

As for the Primacy 3 model, this is one of the modifications of the Primacy model line from Michelin, which today is the best line in the entire model range of the concern. And this model can be called one of the best summer tires. Incredibly tight grip on the road gives you the highest level of safety and reliability you need. These tires have all the necessary certificates of quality and environmental friendliness, which indicates not only traffic safety, but also the safety of using these tires.

As for other tire functions, we note here excellent handling and excellent rubber compound composition, which is characterized by a very high degree of resistance to deformation and wear. They say that this model is often used in France in winter - its performance characteristics are so good. In short, the quality of both Michelin summer tire models is at the highest level!

The best Michelin tire models

Despite the fact that other models were previously highlighted, the best modifications of Michelin tires should be considered the X-Ice North XIN3 and Primacy LC models. It is these models that are the most reliable, safe and of high quality, not only according to expert opinions, but also judging by the reviews of the users themselves. What do these models have that other Michelin tires don’t? Let's try to figure it out.

In fact, if you look for fundamental differences between these two models and all other units of the Michelin model range, no one will be able to find fundamental differences, except for the tread pattern. And you shouldn’t immediately conclude that it is because of him that they are called the best - this is not true at all. In each of these models, the performance characteristics are simply an order of magnitude higher than in other modifications.

If we take the best winter model, X-Ice North XIn 3, then the grip here is simply incredibly high, it is simply at an unattainable level. This suggests that the manufacturer used the best materials and production technologies to create these tires. Optimized tread pattern, double sipes, special tire design - all this allowed this modification to become the best among Michelin winter tire models.

If we consider the Primacy LC model, then the situation is somewhat different - this model is not only the best in the Michelin lineup, but also one of the best among European summer car tire models. The composition of the rubber mixture here is optimal - absorbent gels, natural rubber, silica, and other synthetic components, coupled with lamellaization, ultimately provide simply unimaginable grip on the road - such tires can easily be used in winter, and even in Russia!

This is by no means a call to action, but it certainly appears to be the case! Incredibly strong safety margin, excellent wear resistance, high rolling resistance, excellent aquaplaning properties - the best qualities of car tires of this model can be listed endlessly.

Comparison with analogues

Experts tried to compare Michelin models with analogues. In fact, it is quite difficult to find tires among European and global manufacturers that are similar to Michelin tires. But in the end, the specialists managed to do this and the test results turned out to be quite interesting - the most important competitor among analogues for Michelin tires are tires from the manufacturer Pirelli.

These tires have become the best among identical models. The rest of the tires - Cordiant, Matador, Kumho and others lost to the French tires. This says a lot - the French manufacturer is really working seriously on the quality of its products, and these products are sold at fairly affordable prices. Moreover, it is also worth noting that French tires lost out to Pirelli products quite a bit.

Summary

To summarize, you should pay attention to the following - despite the abundance of Michelin tire models, one cannot say that among the entire model range only 4-5 modifications can be called good - in fact, all models from the Michelin range are of high quality and are characterized by excellent features.

And this is true - after testing by experts, trends were identified to improve the development of the tread pattern, general properties: rolling resistance, aquaplaning, grip and other properties. This also suggests that the coming releases of new modifications will be even more anticipated, since Michelin is now actually on a course to improve everything.

Each model, which is newer than any of the general series, has advantages in terms of use characteristics. Therefore, we should hope that in the near future Michelin will release models that will truly win the status of the best not only in the general range of Michelin car tires, but also in the totality of models from all European and global manufacturers!

Tire for the 2018 summer season MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3 for a wide range of SUVs presented in 44 standard sizes from 17 to 21 bore diameter.

MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3- This is the third generation of Latitude tires, created for powerful and sporty SUVs. The new product has received homologation for the primary equipment of such advanced SUVs as the Porsche Macan, Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, Volvo XC90, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC, as well as the updated Mercedes AMG GLE. This recognition was made possible by improving several characteristics that are most important to consumers. Michelin engineers not only managed to reduce the braking distance on wet surfaces by 2.7 meters compared to the previous generation tire MICHELIN Latitude Sport, but also significantly improve the tire's mileage, its strength and handling.

To achieve similar characteristics, the following technological solutions were used in the new tire:

  • The width of drainage channels has been increased by 10%*, which ensures effective water drainage, guaranteeing confident grip on wet surfaces and increasing the threshold for the onset of aquaplaning.

* compared to the previous generation MICHELIN Latitude Sport.

  • The double carcass in the tire structure provides additional strength, which significantly reduces the risk of tire damage when driving on poorly paved roads or hitting an obstacle.

  • Innovative rubber compound composition, which includes a combination of the latest generation elastomers and silica, allows you to achieve high wear resistance while maintaining an optimal level of grip properties and fuel efficiency.

For the coming summer season, Michelin is expanding the “Summer+” category with tires MICHELINCrossClimate+ and MICHELINCrossClimateSUV, extending the service life from early spring to late autumn and designed to ensure a high level of safety for car owners during the off-season.

The main improvements affected the grip properties of the tire on snow surfaces. Thanks to a set of innovative technical solutions implemented in one bus, MICHELINWITHrossClimate+ provides reliable grip on dry and wet surfaces, as well as mobility in conditions of sudden snowfall.

  • Innovative rubber compound composition

The new rubber compound provides an optimal level of grip, including on snowy surfaces, and also has a high level of wear resistance.

  • V-shaped tread pattern with special sectors

Tread shape MICHELIN CrossClimate+ has a directional structure with a large number of sectors separated by wide drainage channels. Each sector has a special shape that changes its angle, which allows the edges of the blocks to work effectively both during acceleration and when performing maneuvers on snowy surfaces. In addition, all sectors have sharp edges on only one side - to improve acceleration dynamics on snow. At the same time, the other side of the block has smooth edges, which provides a stable contact patch between the tire and the road and minimizes the risk of loss of traction due to deformation that can occur when the edge of the block interacts with the hard surface of the road. Thus, the V-shaped tread pattern provides the summer tire with MICHELINCrossClimate+ excellent grip on dry surfaces, as well as a high level of safety on snowy surfaces.

  • Two types of slats

The sipes located in the shoulder area have a structure that expands towards the base, which, as the tread wears, allows you to maintain the ability to effectively drain water and the edge effect of the tread as a whole.

The lamellas located in the central part are a Z-shaped profile cut inside the block. This complex sipe shape in a summer tire allows the deformation of the tread blocks to be reduced, which improves the tire's handling.

Tire MICHELINCrossClimate+ presented in 37 standard sizes from 15” to 19” bore diameter. Version for compact SUVs and crossovers - MICHELINCrossclimateSUV in 12 standard sizes.

MICHELINPrimacy 4 - summer tire, review

Summer nwine 2018 , is the result of three years of development. MICHELINPrimacy 4 has excellent performance on wet surfaces - both in new condition and with wear (up to the appearance of a wear indicator indicating the minimum permissible remaining tread depth of 1.6 mm).

Thanks to the use of new generation elastomers in the rubber compound, the tire MICHELIN Primacy 4 provides the highest level of grip on wet surfaces from the first to the last kilometer without compromising durability. To improve grip properties, the developers have optimized the relief of the tread pattern. It features more square channels, the width of which has been increased by 22% compared to the previous generation bus. This solution improves the drainage of water from the contact patch even as the tire wears out.

Thus, both new and worn tires MICHELIN Primacy 4 demonstrates excellent performance on wet roads. Braking distance of new tires MICHELIN Primacy 4 reduced by 0.9 meters compared to the competitors' average (1). And on the tires MICHELIN Primacy 4 with significant tread wear (2), the difference with competitors in the braking distance will be already 2.8 meters in favor of the new product (1).

Assess the degree of wear drivers new items MICHELIN Primacy 4 It will become easier: an additional element of the shoulder tread area will help you accurately determine when you need to replace the tires with new ones.

Compared to leading competitors in this segment, the service life of a new tire is MICHELIN Primacy 4 on average 18,000 km longer (3), which demonstrates the longevity of the Michelin product. New tire MICHELIN Primacy 4 embodies the Group's strategy: safe movement of the vehicle throughout the entire service life of the tire, down to the minimum permissible remaining tread depth of 1.6 mm.

New for 2018 MICHELIN Primacy 4 available on the market in 29 sizesfrom 15 to 18 bore diameter.

Best price. The most economical tire
Country: France
Average price: 6088 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Summer tires MICHELIN Energy Saver Plus belong to the line of fuel-efficient tires of the fifth generation. Although the profile of this tire has been increased by 10% to provide even greater safety and better traction, this does not affect fuel consumption. It was even possible to reduce it thanks to the laying of a special layer, the material of which significantly reduces rolling resistance. The use of Eco N Grip technology made it possible to introduce fixing elements into the rubber at the molecular level, which had a better effect on the operational life of the wheel, which was confirmed by test results.

MICHELIN Energy Saver Plus tires behave quite confidently on any road surface thanks to a clearly calibrated asymmetrical tread pattern and an enlarged contact patch. Sharp maneuvering on dry roads and braking on wet roads demonstrate the high performance of this Michelin model.
