Removing the cylinder head on an engine 2108 injector sequence. Removing and installing the cylinder head. Finding the cause of gasket damage

Removing the cylinder head on the VAZ 2106 and on similar Zhiguli engines, it mainly occurs either to repair the engine or the head itself. This procedure in itself is not so complicated, but it does require some preparatory work. And I’ll give you a list right away the necessary tool, which you simply cannot do without when performing this repair:

  • Wrench with extension
  • Ratchet handles
  • Head for 19 and 10
  • Torque wrench
  1. Firstly, if you are going to repair the engine, then it is absolutely necessary.
  2. Then it is necessary because cylinder head bolts are located right under it and it is simply impossible to get to them without removing the camshaft.
  3. And it is also necessary to disconnect the coolant supply pipe to the head, which is located on the right rear side of the engine, as shown in the photo below:

And disconnect the tube, moving it slightly to the side:

You also need to disconnect the plug from the temperature sensor, which is shown in the photo:

Now everything is ready and you can begin to unscrew the bolts securing the cylinder head to the engine block, using a fairly powerful socket wrench:

Once the bolts have been loosened, you can use a ratchet handle to complete this procedure several times faster:

After all the head bolts have been unscrewed, you can lift it by grasping the front part, or whatever is more convenient for you:

Now a few words about installing the cylinder head back onto the block. Firstly, be sure to replace the gasket, since it is installed only once. Of course, you must first clean the block and the surface of the head from traces of old gaskets. I did this using a special Dutch-made Ombra gasket remover, applying this liquid to the entire surface of the cylinder head:

As a result, after about 10 minutes of waiting and careful work with a regular clothes brush, you get a fairly noticeable result. For comparison, I decided to do it as follows: I cleaned the first three combustion chambers by various means, starting from gasoline and ending with WD-40, and the last one with this special means. You can see the result clearly:

After all this is done, you can begin to install the cylinder head back. In order to do this, you will need a special torque wrench, since these bolts must be tightened with a certain torque in the following order:

  • First technique: moment of force from 33-41 N*m.
  • The second - from 95 to 118 N*m.

It is also worth noting that the following order must be observed:

We install all the removed parts in the reverse order and finally assemble the VAZ 2106 engine.

We remove the VAZ 2106 cylinder head from the engine complete with intake and exhaust manifolds. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal battery. Drain the coolant. We remove the carburetor. Remove the ignition distributor (distributor) from high voltage wires. Remove the cylinder head cover of the VAZ 2106. Remove camshaft assembled with bearing housing. Disconnect from the exhaust manifold exhaust system and remove the coolant drain pipe from the heater radiator.

Removal and installation of cylinder head VAZ 2106

Remove the chain from the camshaft sprocket

Disconnect the supply hose from the heater radiator pipe

We remove the hoses from the two pipes of the cylinder head

Using a “13” wrench, unscrew the bolt securing the cylinder head near the ignition distributor

Using a 12mm socket, unscrew the ten bolts securing the head to the cylinder block

- undoubtedly, an important part of any car - the VAZ 2114 is no exception - after all, it is thanks to it that 3 systems remain sealed at once: gas distribution, cooling and lubrication (oil). Hence, it is quite natural that this element is a disposable part, so in case of any malfunction, do not even try to fix it, but immediately replace it.

When is it necessary to replace the cylinder head gasket of a VAZ 2114?

  1. The coolant in the radiator or expansion tank is constantly bubbling.

Bubbles are a sign of a leak, and since the cylinder head gasket is supposed to ensure this tightness, most likely this is the problem.

  1. Exhaust gases escape through the cylinder head gasket.

The situation is rare, but possible, especially for those motorists who like to tighten the fastening nuts.

  1. The exhaust pipe smokes.
  1. When checking the oil level, the dipstick shows white emulsion like foam.

This can again happen due to a leak in the cooling system, which may be a consequence of a damaged cylinder head gaskets or (less often) the presence of a crack in the block itself.

  1. Reduced engine power and increased consumption fuel.

They can be a sign of a variety of breakdowns, including a breakdown of the gasket between the cylinders.

  1. The coolant is oily.

Like all of the above symptoms, it does not require an unquestioning replacement of the cylinder head gasket, but calls for a thorough diagnosis.

How to replace the cylinder head gasket of a VAZ 2114 with your own hands: step-by-step instructions.

1. Turn off the power to the car by removing the negative terminal from the battery.

2. Fix the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position.

3. Drain the coolant.

4. Make sure that the pressure in the supply system is low enough. To do this, look for an element at the rear end of the fuel rail that looks like a tire spool with a cap. Unscrew this cap, press the spool and drain the fuel into a container prepared in advance. Screw the cap back into place.

Attention! Be extremely careful and attentive with this point. For the first couple of hours after stopping the car, don’t even touch the spool, you will get burned - the fuel will fly out in the form of a sprayed torch and will be quite hot!

5. Disconnect the muffler pipe from the exhaust manifold. To do this, unscrew the nuts securing the bracket with the pipe under the bottom of the car. After removing the bracket, remove the corresponding nuts, remove the clamp and release the exhaust pipe.

6. Dismantle cylinder head cover, simultaneously disconnecting the intake and exhaust manifolds, throttle assembly and receiver.

7. Loosen the clamp of the air supply pipe to the throttle and disconnect the plug from the sensor mass flow air, remove the pipe from the throttle assembly using an air intake hose and an air filter.

8. Using a screwdriver and a 10mm hexagon, disconnect the hoses coming from the air outlet pipe, loosen all the clamps and unscrew all the mounting screws along with the washers.

9. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the sensors: throttle position, oil level and pressure, coolant temperature, detonation and crankshaft position - as well as the regulator idle move and injector wiring harness.

10. Remove the tips of the explosive wires from the spark plugs.

11. Pull the wiring harness out from under the receiver.

12. After unscrewing the fastening nuts, remove the timing cover, and then the belt itself.

13. Having fixed toothed pulley to prevent the camshaft from turning, remove its mounting bolt together with the washer.

14. Carefully, without touching the oil seal, remove the pulley from the camshaft.

15. After removing the mounting bolts, remove the rear camshaft drive cover.

17. Using a hexagon, loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts one by one, half a turn at a time. And then unscrew them completely in the same sequence. Such unhurriedness and order will eliminate the possibility of deformation of the lid.

18. Remove the cylinder head and, using a screwdriver, using this tool as a lever, disconnect the cylinder head from the gasket.

19. Clean all surfaces and elements released during repair, remove oil from threaded holes.

20. Place a new gasket on the installation bushings (the hole for the passage of oil in it should take place between the 3rd and 4th cylinders).

21. Make sure that the distribution and crankshaft are still in the TDC position. To do this, inspect 1 cylinder. Both valves must be closed.

22. Secure the cylinder head together with the gasket with mounting bolts pre-lubricated with a small amount of motor oil. Tighten the bolts in 4 stages according to the following scheme:

  • Stage 1 – with a force of 20 N m (2 kgf m);
  • Stage 2 – with a force of 69.4–85.7 N m (7.1–8.7 kgf m);
  • Stage 3 – rotate 90 degrees;
  • Stage 4 – final pressure, turning another 90 degrees.

23. Reassemble all removed elements in reverse order.

As you can see, replacing the cylinder head gasket of a VAZ 2114 is quite labor-intensive and difficult process, so if after reading this article you still have even the slightest doubts and/or questions, it is better to entrust this work to professionals.

Video.

The cylinder head (cylinder head) is usually removed to replace the gasket or block, or repair the valve mechanism piston group or the head itself. The need to remove the cylinder head may also arise in the case of engine tuning or complete disassembly of the engine.

This work is carried out on inspection hole or overpass.

HOW TO REMOVE THE cylinder head on a VAZ 2109 - STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

Drain the coolant into a plastic container.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.

Now remove the receiver along with throttle assembly(VAZ-2111), or carburetor in the case of (VAZ-21083), as well as intake and exhaust manifolds(remove the cylinder head without removing the manifolds).

On a VAZ-2111, you need to disconnect the “mass” wires (they are attached to the left end of the head), remove the fuel rail with fuel pipes and injectors.

Disable high voltage wires from spark plugs, as well as connectors for coolant temperature and oil pressure level sensors.

On the VAZ -21083 you will additionally have to remove the body auxiliary units, ignition distributor and fuel pump.

Now remove the timing belt, after that tension roller, spacer washer and camshaft timing pulley.

Unscrew the rear fastening nut that secures the timing cover to the cylinder head.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the clamps and disconnect all hoses from the cylinder head exhaust pipe one by one.

Unscrew the 10 cylinder head mounting bolts using a "10" hexagon.

Remove the screws and washers.

Now you can remove the cylinder head along with the gasket.

Taking apart valve mechanism, place a wooden block under the valve plate that you are going to dry out.

Dehydrate the valve

Remove it from the cylinder head guide bushing.

Take the key to “13” and unscrew the two fastening nuts on the exhaust pipe.

Remove the gasket and pipe.

Assembling and installing the cylinder head is carried out in the reverse order.

The valve stems and bushing guides are lubricated with engine oil.

Before starting installation, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface of the cylinder block from dirt and oil, as well as remnants of the old gasket.

The cylinder head gasket is replaced using two special centering bushings.

Now you can install the mounting screws and tighten them in four steps according to the diagram below.

The first tightening of the screws is carried out with a torque of 20 N.m (2 kgf.m);

The second - with a moment of 69.4–85.7 N.m (7.1–8.7 kgf.m);

Third - extension by 90°;

The fourth is to turn the screws 90°.
