My screwdriver is 12 volt. Of course, the first thought that comes to mind is to connect the screwdriver to the car battery. I've read a lot of instructions on this, but they weren't user-friendly or pretty enough for me. My version seems to me much more elegant and convenient. As a result, I want to convert a few more of my tools to power from a car battery. So let's get started!

Stage 1: We sacrifice the screwdriver!



There are so many of them standing alone on shelves in thrift stores or sold on bulletin boards. Sometimes lifeless, without batteries - Skil, Ryobi, DeWalt, Bosch and others are looking for their new owner. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors. Various power (9.5 volts, 12 volts, 18 volts, 19.2 volts, 28 volts) and battery type (lithium-ion, cadmium, etc.). Many of them are outdated. It was easier for their previous owner to throw away his assistant and buy a new one. So these lost children sit on shelves collecting dust until the thrift store clerk finally throws them out. I'm talking to you about the Screwdriver! Or rather, about a used screwdriver.

So, what we need is a 12-volt screwdriver, which we don’t mind parting with. This is what I managed to buy for 300 rubles. (see photo above) This screwdriver did not have a battery.

Stage 2: Disassembly

As you can see in the photo, the bit did not fit into the hole all the way and could not reach the screw head. Using a drill, I had to slightly increase the diameter of the hole so that the bit could easily fit into it.

Start by removing the obvious screws that hold the screwdriver body together. My screws were Torx T10s, most likely yours will be exactly the same. For the most part, they all came out easily.

Stage 3: Getting to know the “internals”


Once all the screws were removed, I was able to remove half of the plastic case. Even for people far from engineering :) basic device A screwdriver will seem quite simple. In the handle we have two metal terminals that were connected to the battery. One of them was marked “B+” and the other “B-”. I assume that the letter "B" is from the English word "battery" (battery or battery), +/- indicate positive and negative polarity, respectively.

I thought my screwdriver would look stupid and clunky with the bottom plastic flange where it was standard battery. So I decided to cut the handle. Problem solved.

To connect the screwdriver to the car battery, I used car cigarette wires. Inexpensive wires with a small cross-section are suitable for these purposes. I bought a 150A 2 m long for 300 rubles.

On each of the wires on one side it is necessary to cut off the so-called “crocodiles”. At the free end we strip the insulation by about 2-3 cm.

As you can see, the screwdriver connectors were of an unusual shape. In order to connect the wires to these terminals, I bent the stripped part in half as seen in the photo. Then I threaded them inside each terminal. It turned out to be a kind of hook. After that, for reliable fixation, I tightened each connection with plastic clamps. I think that professionals would definitely solder the wires, but I have little experience in soldering :-).

Attention, observe polarity! Most often, the “crocodiles” from the cigarette lighter wires have a polarity mark.

Stage 7: Assembly


Next, our task is to properly insulate everything. I used ¾ roll of duct tape for this. First, I wrapped each of the connections so that no metal parts protruded. Then I wrapped everything together so that the terminals did not touch each other.

When I assembled the screwdriver body, I wrapped the wires at the exit from the body with electrical tape for insulation and fixation.

Congratulations! Now it doesn’t matter whether you forgot to charge the screwdriver or not and how long its charge will last. With such a tool you can work for a long time, even where there is no electricity at all.
