The main problems of the Skoda Octavia. What to look for when buying a Skoda Octavia Tour in the secondary market. Skoda Octavia II - typical problems and malfunctions

SHOW

HOLD

Any manufacturer wants to put his offspring on public display. Especially when it comes to such a prestigious Paris Motor Show. Back in 1996, the manufacturers of the Skoda concern put up a new Octavia car for the judgment of specialists and spectators. It was a kind of exam: the Czech concern completely passed under the flags of an older comrade Volkswagen. The Octavia was their first, a completely new model based on the VW Golf platform. The Skoda Octavia car (Skoda Octavia) thus claimed to move to a more “heavy weight category” a class higher, where there were no cars produced in Czech factories for half a century.

This appeared in 1996, the new Skoda Oktavia at the Paris Motor Show

Great hopes were pinned on the updated production, implying that German pedantry and the famous quality of the automatic will migrate to Skoda cars. Manufacturers expected that the car would be a success with the middle class, since the price was very tempting.

The management of the company was looking forward to the reaction of the customers. Motorists greeted the novelty warmly, which justified the hopes of manufacturers. Indeed, the new Skoda Octavia was distinguished by a better assembly. A potential buyer could be pleased by purchasing a hatchback with sedan features - a sort of combination of styles.

However, not everything worked out as we would like. The first cars, like children, were constantly sick. The central locking was constantly acting up, the trunk button stuck. Obvious flaws in the plastic docking in the cabin were visible. We must pay tribute to the German designers, who promptly, literally on the go under warranty, corrected the flaws, gradually removing the "growing pains". Only those defects that arose during the operation of Octavia remained.

The appearance of Octavia, of course, has become more modern and attractive. But what about "childhood diseases"?

A few words about the positive points

On the "roads" of the post-Soviet space, the car showed itself on the positive side, withstanding all the "charms" of the harsh (including) Russian road reality. There are a number of positive aspects that simply cannot be ignored.

  1. Skoda Octavia already comes with crankcase protection as standard. The protection is not made of plastic, but is reliable - steel. Let's be objective: many models come without any bottom protection at all.
  2. Power units start normally, they don’t sneeze, they don’t complain about the quality of our fuel. At the same time, the life of the candles goes through a full cycle. The Germans do not install platinum, but install simple ones, whose service life does not exceed 30,000.00 km. After a specified period, they must be replaced.

We “dig into” the engines of the “patient”, look for flaws

What is good is the choice of units provided by the Skoda Octavia. But experienced "comrades" do not recommend purchasing a car that runs on gasoline EXACTLY with a volume of 1.8 liters, not turbocharged. It is he, however, like the power unit, with a volume of 2.0 liters that often has problems with the ECS (electronic control system) of the motor, which does not always start at the first turn of the ignition key. Either the sensor, perhaps the control unit itself, may be the culprit in the unstable operation of the engine. But the owner of the car from this, as they say, does not get any easier, on the contrary. He will be forced to get out of his own pocket a tidy sum of "American money" of about $1,000 -$1,300. This is not taking into account the cost of the service stations themselves. Additional disadvantages of a non-turbocharged 1.8-liter engine - it does not start well in winter. However, there are complaints about the 2.0-liter engine, which does not start at the snap of a finger in the heat - the obvious overheating of the unit affects. It can also be naughty, it does not start well in wet weather. This hindrance is also called low-quality domestic fuel.

They were purchased mainly Octavia with a 1.6-liter power unit with a capacity of 101 liters. In favor were turbocharged engines of 1.8 liters 150 l / forces. By the way, they performed well on the VW Passat. It was the 1.8-liter engine that offered a lot of options for an amateur to “conjure” over iron. The tuning of this unit was approved by the German comrades, offering a lot of industrial options for refining not only the power unit, but the car as a whole. Tuned engines start much better than their serial counterparts. We think that with the advent of new notes in the operation of the motor, their owners also start up (in the good sense of the word).

The minimum price of tuning costs $ 800. This includes replacing the "brains" of the powertrain control system. Engine power soars to the mark of 190 horses! Statistics say that 20% of all sales worldwide are for a turbocharged diesel engine. This is a 1.9-liter diesel engine with 110 l / forces.

Cars with such an engine have taken root with us. It is surprising that this diesel unit uses our diesel fuel with pleasure, without complaining about the quality. Let's say more, Bosch specialists in fuel equipment, unfortunately, are forced to admit that at least 50% of fuel system failures are factory faults, and not our solarium. The car starts in the cold almost always from the first turn.

For those who are just getting ready to buy a Skoda Octavia, we want to say that you should not change the engine oil on your own. The weak point of the Octavia is the thread in the mining drain hole. If you don't want to end up with about $90 for an oil pan (plus $40 to replace it), then it's best to put the responsibility on the shoulders of experienced service stations. Moreover, they are familiar with this problem.

There are in the line of power units at Skoda Octavia 1.8-liter engines consuming gasoline and a 1.9-liter unit running on diesel fuel, turbocharged with all-wheel drive transmission. What are the faults, shortcomings of these motors? They have one thing in common: not a very reliable control unit. You can expect “dirty things” from him after about 2000 km of run. We regret to inform you that the owner of the unfortunate car needs to pay $60 for repairs, plus the control unit will cost $400. In the future, owners of cars with an all-wheel drive version will need to regularly change the oil in the clutch according to the service book. These units are not without a certain tenderness: they are capricious, they do not always start perfectly.

Transmission Disadvantages

Manual transmissions in the total mass of troubles are not presented to Octavia car owners. Although if you do not adjust the tension of the cable, which is the connecting link between the gearshift lever and the box, problems will arise after the recommended 15,000 km of run. Moreover, it is not necessary to save such an operation for only $ 15.

The sore point of the Skoda Octavia, equipped with a turbocharged gasoline engine and manual transmission, is the clutch. Everything is in the hands of the driver, his driving style. For the same reason, the suspension and its elements can finish their “work path” ahead of schedule.

Warning for "extremals": shock absorbers and rear silent blocks designed to pass 80,000 km / 50,000 km, respectively, will not withstand a frenzied race.

The weak point of the Skoda Octavia equipped with independent suspension is traditionally the stabilizer struts. The shortcomings in the strength of the racks affected not only Skoda. They are inherent in almost all modern cars.

Deficiencies were found in the operation of the control unit, which is responsible for opening doors, including the trunk. The cost of work is approximately $40. On some models, the ignition lock is stuck. The weak link is the ventilation and heating system (deflectors). The disadvantages are weak muffler fasteners. The rubber bands on which it is attached stubbornly do not want to serve for more than one year.

Station wagon cars suffer from the closing of the fifth door - the trunk. The trunk lock opens especially badly in winter, with which you need to decently tinker. Although it is recognized by all that the trunk of the Octavia is roomy and there are no problems with transporting the necessary things.

As an option, it is proposed to install an additional roof rack on the car. But in this case, the consumption of gasoline will increase slightly. Difficulties can also arise when removing the optional roof rack. We are talking about constant contamination, the lock opens with difficulty, you will agree that these are obvious shortcomings.

Conflicting information comes from owners of Czech-made cars. Some say that the trunk lock is difficult to open. Others, on the contrary, argue that the latch of the trunk lock opens spontaneously. The tailgate does not fit snugly against the body itself. A weak gasket from this on potholes and rough roads, the tailgate makes a constant noise and rumbles. The driver, like a match, flares up, starts up on trifles. We think that there is nothing worse than listening to where vibration and noise come from in your car. Agree that it is this noise that distracts the driver from control.

If you follow the manufacturer's recommendations, then in a conversation with colleagues such words and phrases will disappear: the car will not start, the engine is knocking. You will not list the shortcomings, and bend your fingers at the word cons. Take care, take care of your car, it will reciprocate - the long work of all components and assemblies.

Information about the car Skoda Octavia A5
(photos, modifications, engines, gearboxes, main problems, prices)

general information

The second generation of the Skoda Octavia received the designation A5 (based on its platform) and replaced the previous model Skoda Octavia a4. The new version was introduced in March 2004. The car is built on the A5 platform (internal designation PQ35), which it shares with the second generation Audi A3, fifth generation Volkswagen Golf and other platform models. In addition to the new range of engines, the model received a more spacious interior, in particular more legroom for rear passengers (a weak point of the previous generation). In addition, the ground clearance has been increased front and rear.

The production of the model was established in many countries, including Russia - at the end of 2007, the production of Skoda Octavia was opened in Kaluga. In India, the second generation Octavia was sold under the name Laura in order to distance itself into a higher market segment from the first generation model, which was also sold there until 2010, however, from 2010 to 2012, the price of Laura was reduced and she already focused on that part of the market where before that, the first generation was positioned.

There were also two all-wheel drive versions in the Octavia a5 lineup: 4x4 and Scout. Both versions used four-wheel drive with a Haldex clutch. Both modifications had increased ground clearance: by 24 mm for the 4x4 version and by 40 mm for the Scout. The Scout itself was introduced in 2006 and was only available as a station wagon. Outwardly, it differed from the usual Octavia with enlarged bumpers and a plastic body kit, giving it a more crossover look.

Skoda Octavia A5 was offered in two types of bodies: liftback and station wagon:
Liftback - Skoda Octavia A5 (model code: 1Z3), years of production: 2004 - 2013
Station wagon - Skoda Octavia Combi A5 (model code: 1Z5), years of production: 2005 - 2013

The Skoda Octavia a5 liftback was produced only in a front-wheel drive version, but had two separate modifications: RS and Scout. RS is a sports modification of the car, which was equipped with the most powerful engines 2.0 TSi (200 hp) and 2.0 TDi (170 hp). This modification appeared in the lineup in 2005.

Skoda Octavia a5 also came with a styling package "Styling package", which included different bumpers, a blade-wing wing on the trunk lid and a stainless steel exhaust tip.

The version of the Skoda Octavia A5 Kombi (station wagon) was also supplied with an all-wheel drive transmission. And in 2007, an all-terrain version appeared in its lineup - Scout. As well as for the liftback, the RS version was available for the station wagon.

2. Complete sets and modifications of Skoda Octavia A5 restyling (11.2008-06.2013)

Restyled models were introduced at the end of 2008. The changes affected the exterior design of the bumpers, hood and optics. On the technical side, the list of proposed engines and transmissions has changed, and the head multimedia devices, steering wheel and interior trim options have changed in the cabin. The restyling also for the first time for the model appeared robotic gearbox DSG7 (0AM).

Also, the restyled Octavia a5 retained the RS version for both body types (engine power remained at the same level, but a version with DSG for a gasoline engine appeared).

The station wagon retained versions with all-wheel drive, including the off-road modification - Scout.

3. Body Skoda Octavia A5 (LKP, corrosion centers, problem areas)

The body of the Skoda Octavia A5 is well galvanized and is not afraid of external aggressive factors. But this is only as long as there was no external intervention in the paintwork or body repair. No matter how well they try to repair the body, especially if one or more elements have been replaced, the zinc coating will no longer be uniform, which means that the appearance of corrosion centers at the repair sites is very likely.

Do not believe it, if they write somewhere that the paint from the thresholds or arches of the Skoda Octavia A5 peels off by itself from old age, this is very unlikely. The paint itself does not peel off the cars, most likely there was just a body repair that was done improperly. But this applies only to very advanced cases:

Small chips are possible, since the zinc coating also has a negative side: the paint does not adhere to zinc as tightly as on the ground, which is used to cover non-galvanized steel body parts. Thus, don't be surprised if the stones leave enough noticeable chips that you should touch up quickly enough so that the chips do not increase their area.

There are also other purely Škodovskie features inherent in almost all models of the brand. For example, the rear bumpers are very tightly attached to the body, and during the operation of the car, the bumper rubs against the body. This leads to the fact that the paint begins to rub off, and at the junction of the two parts corrosion centers appear (the so-called "bugs"). For those who have not yet manifested this sore, you can remove the bumper and apply a transparent vinyl film between the wing and the bumper - this will save the body from paint abrasion.

All versions of the Skoda Octavia a5 have very good door seals that do not allow water to enter the car, even when the body passes through very deep puddles. But these seals, unfortunately, wipe the paint on the body very much, after which they are also taken for the zinc coating. It is necessary to avoid the appearance of sand and dirt in the areas of contact between the seals and the body. The bottom line is that paint abrasion occurs not only at the moments of opening and closing the doors, but also because the doors themselves walk somewhat in their openings, due to the fact that the body does not have sufficient torsional rigidity (typical for liftbacks up to emergence of the MQB platform).

Also, on the thresholds of the Skoda Octavia a5, a layer of anti-gravel is applied, on the border of which defects in the paintwork (microcracks) may appear, which ultimately leads to the appearance of quite noticeable peeling of the paint. In order to catch such defects at the initial stage and try to clean and paint over them, it is worth running a finger along this edge: if you don’t feel peeling and softness, then everything is fine, and if the edge of the anti-gravel coating began to move under the pressure of a finger, then in this place peeling of paint and anti-gravity has already begun.

Surprisingly, the paint on the hood of the Skoda Octavia a5 holds up very well, and even with active driving on the highway, there are not as many chips on the hood as it could be. What can not be said about the roof of the car, where the chips are formed quite easily and begin to expand quickly enough.

4. Body colors Skoda Octavia a5 (paint codes)

You can find out your paint code either by decoding the VIN number, or by the plate with option codes from the service book (the same table is duplicated by a sticker in the trunk next to the spare wheel niche.

For example, in the photo below we see the code 9154 . We look at the color matching table and among the full code we find 9154 /F5X/5T5T, which indicates that the car to which the plate belongs in the photo has a color Satin Gray.

5. Interior Skoda Octavia A5

5.1 Skoda Octavia A5 trim options

Skoda Octavia A5 had various color combinations in the interior. Most often in Russia this is a black Anthracite interior, but in Europe and other countries it was possible to choose combinations of Anthracite with light gray and beige inserts.

Depending on the configuration, decorative inserts in the cabin also changed:

  • Black plastic (Classic and Active equipment);
  • Painted in silver metallic (complete set Ambiente and Ambition);
  • With an imitation of the structure of aluminum or wood (Elegance);
  • Black piano lacquer (Laurin&Klement).
On the pre-styling version, there was also a version of the "Dynamic" saloon with sports seats

Laurin & Klement was the richest version of the interior trim in terms of equipment, only she relied on decorative inserts in black piano lacquer. This version also featured leather seats and Alcantara/leather combination seats.

The RS versions also relied on an interior with full leather or combination trim, while the color performance of the seats could also vary. The seats on the Octavia RS have a more pronounced profile. Also on the RS versions was a three-spoke steering wheel with a sporty grip, trimmed with perforated leather.

5.2 Multimedia systems Skoda Octavia A5

Skoda Octavia A5 was equipped with various multimedia systems that differed in their functions. At the same time, pre-styling multimedia systems differed from those installed on restyled cars.

Head units Skoda Octavia A5 (dore styling) (02.2004-10.2008)

Skoda Melody
Equipped with a CD player, AM / FM radio, RDS system, coding system to a specific car, a 4 x 20 W audio amplifier and a mini-jack input for connecting a hands-free headset. It has the ability to connect a multifunction steering wheel and a MaxiDOT display.

Skoda Stream
It was equipped with a CD / MP3 player, AM / FM radio, an RDS system and a large monochrome dot display that allows you to display data on street temperature, show the time, and also duplicate information from the Climatronic climate system, parking sensors and a connected hands-free headset. The audio amplifier has the same power as the Melody: 4 x 20 watts. It has the ability to connect a multi-wheel, MaxiDOT display and CD changer.

Skoda Audience
Equipped with all the same functions as the Skoda Stream, but in addition to them, it also has a built-in 6-disc CD changer.

Skoda Cruise Navigation System
It has a large monochrome display that shows the direction of navigation using schematic arrows. The system also displays the number of kilometers to the destination and the remaining travel time. Navigation instructions, in addition to visual designations, are also accompanied by voice comments. For navigation, special navigation CDs are used, which require updating and change for different regions. The rest of the functionality is in line with what the Stream head unit offers.

Skoda Nexus navigation system
Has a color LCD display that displays detailed navigation along with a map of the area. The display shows a detailed route to the destination, while the information is duplicated on the MaxiDOT dashboard display. It has a traffic alert feature.

Head units Skoda Octavia A5 (re styling) (11.2008-06.2013)

Skoda Blues
The same device that in the pre-styling version of the Octavia A5 was called the Skoda Melody. Equipped with a CD player, AM / FM radio, RDS system, coding system to a specific car, a 4 x 20 W audio amplifier and a mini-jack input for connecting a hands-free headset. It has the ability to connect a multifunction steering wheel and a MaxiDOT display.

Skoda Swing
The base 2-din model offers features such as FM/AM radio, CD/MP3 player, parking assistant visualization on a 302 x 45 pixel monochrome display, Bluetooth (on some models) and USB support, AUX (on some models). It does not allow connecting such functions as a rear view camera, displaying information on the screen, there is no possibility of navigation, viewing photos and videos.

Skoda Bolero
It has much more functionality than Swing. A 6.5-inch color touch screen with a resolution of 400x240 pixels allows you to connect a rear view camera. The screen also displays indicators from the climate system and other sides of comfort. It has support for multi-wheel, MaxiDOT display, SD cards. The player supports CD and MP3 formats, as well as incoming AUX and USB ports.

Skoda Amundsen/Amundsen+
This head unit had a 5-inch color touch screen with a resolution of 400x240, support for navigation software, CD, SD. Bluetooth was absent in this model, but it was possible to install it additionally. Navigation in this GU worked from the disk, and not all maps were supported. Also, this GU did not have a connector for a rear view camera, which made it impossible to install it.

Amundsen+ has the ability to load maps directly into the memory of the PG itself, eliminating the need to use a navigation CD for this purpose. Amundsen + also has a built-in bluetooth model and makes it possible to connect a rear view camera to the GU.

Skoda Columbus
The device was equipped with a large 6.5-inch touch screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels and LED backlight. Columbus also had features such as support for navigation, video playback, as well as internal memory, which allowed you to download maps and navigation updates directly into the head unit.

6. Technical features and hidden features of the Skoda Octavia A5

Skoda Octavia A5 is built on the PQ35 platform and has ample opportunities for coding and activating various functions of the car's internal equipment. The list of functions that can be activated on the Skoda Octavia A5 can be found on a separate forum page dedicated to.

6.1 Suspension

Suspension Skoda Octavia A5 is fully independent: McPherson front and multi-link rear. The suspension of the Octavia A5 is quite unpretentious and reliable. But we must be prepared that every 60-80 thousand km it will be necessary to change the stabilizer struts 1K0 411 315 R. Less often, shock absorbers leak and springs break (although if the trunk is heavily loaded, then the rear springs and shock absorbers will require replacement at a run of about 50 thousand km).

6.2 Brakes

Front and rear disc brakes (front - ventilated), which vary in dimension depending on the engine model. The following front brake mechanisms were installed on the Skoda Octavia A5:

  • 1ZF- Teves FS III 280x22 mm for 15"" rims - (rims 1K0 615 301 AS, pads 1K0 698 151 F) - for basic modifications 1.4 MPI and 1.6 MPI

You can read about how to independently replace the rear brake discs and pads on the Skoda Octavia A5 in a separate one.

6.3 Transmission

Skoda Octavia A5 was equipped with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive transmission. The all-wheel drive transmission uses the Haldex Traction system, which includes a computer-controlled central clutch, which is able to automatically redistribute torque, transferring up to 85% of the force to the selected wheel.

On various modifications of the Skoda Octavia A5, the following versions of gearboxes were installed.

  • 5-speed manual transmission 0AF
  • 5-speed manual transmission 0A4
  • 6-speed manual transmission MQ250 02S
  • 6-speed manual transmission MQ350 02Q
  • 6-speed torque converter
  • 6-speed robotic (wet clutch)
  • 7-speed robotic (dry clutch)

7. Frequent problems and maintenance features of the Skoda Octavia A5:

Skoda Octavia A5 is reliable and has established itself as an excellent option for a pragmatist, who not only does not cause much trouble, but also performs a lot of various tasks in terms of versatility and ease of transportation. Despite all this, the Octavia A5 also has a number of features that are worth remembering.

7.1 Stretching the timing chain and oil burner of 1.8 TSI engines

The diesel engine and aspirated have a timing belt drive, so do not neglect its replacement every 90 thousand km. (The factory recommends inspection every 60,000 km and replacement every 120,000 km). Turbo engines have a chain drive, which, according to the factory, is designed for the entire service life. But this is not at all the case, because not only are the chains on these motors stretched, but even before 2012 they could jump due to a design flaw in the timing mechanism tensioner.

7.4 Problems with the DSG robot

According to the manufacturer's information, the 7-speed preselective DSG robotic box is designed for 300 thousand kilometers, but the situation with it is difficult. In fact, this “robot” turned out to be the most problematic place in Octavia. The minimum that the owner may encounter is a clang coming from the box when driving at low speeds. Plus jerks and vibrations in the first two gears. Such phenomena do not affect the lifespan in any way. In contrast to the constant urban operation, if a significant part of it falls on traffic light traffic jams.

The mechanical part of the "seven-step" is unlikely to force you to contact the service. "Mechatronic" is able to require a replacement for 30-40 thousand km. Well, if it was done before the end of the warranty. What is even more interesting, the “preselective” itself appeared on Skoda only with restyling. But then a 6-speed automatic transmission was returned to the version with 1.8 TSI. And rightly so - the described problems are more typical for the most powerful modification.

7.5 Sufficiently reliable, but not eternal machine 09G

"Automatic" Aisin TF-61SN, it is also known as 09G by modern standards is not bad. Up to 100 thousand km, you only need to follow the internal left anther of the drive, which tends to break after the winter season (3,000 rubles). The inner left CV joint can also fail and begin to create unpleasant vibrations during acceleration.

After 100,000 km of run, slipping and hitting "hot" may begin, while "on a cold unit" everything will work fine. All this promises the owner the replacement of the valve body. But then burnt friction clutches and the destruction of the "planetary" may follow. This does not happen for everyone, and some cars with automatic transmission 09G drive 250-300 thousand km without any problems.

Remember that the oil in the automatic transmission also changes every 60,000 km, as well as on the DSG.

8. Prices at the time of production and in the secondary market

The price of Skoda Octavia 2009 "Ambient" at the time of production in Russia was in the range of 499-735 thousand rubles for a hatchback body and 535-755 thousand rubles for a station wagon (Combi). The price of Skoda Octavia 2009 "Elegance" ranged from 629 to 779 thousand rubles for a hatchback and from 669 to 819 thousand rubles for a station wagon.

Looking at such prices now, you start to "bite your elbows", and you think, that's what you had to buy then in order to drive now and still not know problems (of course, without DSG).

To date, the secondary market is filled with a mass of offers for the sale of Octavius A5, since there were a lot of them, and in Russia it has become one of the best bestsellers. Offers for more or less decent copies start at 300,000 rubles. But here you need to be very careful, since the Skoda Octavia is one of the favorite taxi cars (confirms reliability and versatility), especially the 1.6 MPI version with a manual transmission. It is clear that such machines will be squeezed out "to the last drop"

Therefore, it is better to look at offers at a price closer to 500,000 rubles, but even there you need to be on the alert, because buying an Octavia in good condition now is a great success and an excellent investment.

The best option would be restyled cars of the last years of production 2012-2013, since they did not have completely empty configurations (dealers made discounts and stirred up interest in the outgoing model), and 1.4 TSI engines have already received an upgraded timing mechanism. Therefore, it is worth choosing either a 1.4 TSI manual transmission or a 1.6 MPI manual transmission / automatic transmission. Versions with 1.8 TSI, although powerful, suffer from oil consumption and will eventually require the replacement of the piston group.

You should also always remember the basic ones that will help you not make obvious mistakes when choosing a car.

My cars: Skoda Octavia A5 ambition 1.6 MPI (BSE) 102 hp Automatic transmission-6 09G and some other German garbage dumps =)

Octavia - the car is quite trouble-free. If you think about it, then he doesn’t have such weak points at all, in which the owner grabs his head with cries of “well, how could this be done.” Partly due to the fact that the genes of German automakers make themselves felt, partly because the manufacturer has not implemented any globally breakthrough and innovative solutions on this car. A malfunction of the Skoda Octavia engine in normal mode is a completely out of the ordinary phenomenon.

The result was a line of urban sedans, all the weak points of which have long been studied, and the shortcomings of nodes and blocks have been corrected. This is compensated, however, by a higher price both in purchase and in repair, if something still fails.

Typical malfunctions

Automatic transmission

Automatic transmission is perhaps the only machine component that requires attention during operation and when buying from hand. If there are no complaints about the mechanics at all, then some solutions were applied in the machine that did not benefit him. The six-speed automatic transmission is prone to overheating, instabilities appear in operation. To break - does not break, but spoils the nerves. If in box-6 malfunctions really appear, then Skoda Octavia repair and gearbox replacement is very (very!) expensive. Specificity.

DSG-7, clutch and mechatronic: do not breathe

With the seven-speed DSG-7 gearbox, which is installed on some Octavia models, the owners recommend not to mess with it at all. The device is extremely capricious, complex, expensive to repair.

These malfunctions of the Skoda Octavia also apply to the rest of the lines on which the DSG7 is installed - Audi, Seat, VW. She has problems with both mechanics and internal gear and position sensors.

The DSG7 mechatronics, the electronic-hydraulic gearbox control unit, is not adapted to life.

The symptoms of breakdowns are very simple: the car refuses to drive and flashes the PRNDS and service indicators on the dashboard. It is treated by repairing the box - replacing the clutch, in severe cases, by overhauling or replacing the mechatronics. Computer diagnostics at the service station will help you better understand what happened and how to treat it now. Most likely expensive.

  • really dislikes abrupt starts from a place (although it can)
  • at low temperatures, it is necessary to heat
  • when driving for a long time, both in the city and on the highway - let the box cool down (it will complain on the dashboard itself)
  • prevent slipping (eats gears easily)

In early versions of the engine control unit, there was a recommendation to switch to neutral N in a traffic jam and at a traffic light, because. due to the logic of the sensors, the box began to jump in 1-2 open gears. Now this problem is solved.

Sometimes the internal control system puts the automatic transmission into emergency mode when the gear shift maybe be erroneous - for example, if, in case of a violation of the control circuits of the checkpoint, you start in an aggressive mode to "jump" in the stream with a kickdown and regassing. It is treated by turning the engine on and off, and it's time for diagnostics.

Silent blocks

Silent blocks on all Octavia lines need to be mentally prepared to change for 40-45 thousand kilometers, and this question is closed.

This is the consumable. The rest of the insulating gaskets also need to be checked from time to time: they are torn.

Stabilizer's pole

Some models of stabilizer struts come with factory defects. If there is a knock - a replacement under warranty.

For Skoda Octavia, timing problems begin at 80-90 thousand mileage, they are solved by installing a repair kit. Timing wear is checked both programmatically and on a mechanical indicator.

Due to the specifics of Skoda, it is better to change the timing at 100 thousand, without waiting for the metallic sound to start. On older models, due to the characteristics of the sensor, the machine may not have time to programmatically complain in time.

Noise and soundproofing

Everything is pretty decent with Shumka at Skoda, but you can further improve the situation at the service: eliminate the rattle of unsuccessfully lying fuel pipes, soundproof the radiator grill, check the air ducts for dirt.

Oil consumption

If your model eats oil “as if not in itself”, then this Skoda Octavia engine malfunction has been studied - it usually manifests itself in turbocharged models - and you need to contact the service before expiration of the warranty period. Otherwise, a non-warranty replacement of the cylinder head or turbocharger can greatly undermine the budget.

Stove

Due to the peculiarities of the location, the stove becomes dirty, works worse and whistles disgustingly with both the air ducts and the dirty fan motor (on those models where it stands before the filter). It is solved by cleaning, and in case of frequent occurrence - by installing an additional external filter on the pipe (any filter cap that is suitable in size). And the cabin filter will be cleaner.

The Skoda Octavia is famous for its practicality and reliability; over time, it loses quite a bit in price. This model is recommended to friends, it is bought by taxi companies. And indeed, the car is something to love. But nothing is perfect, which means that the model, of course, has flaws. Let's discuss the weak points of the 5-year-old Skoda Octavia 2 generation with a range of 80 thousand kilometers. In the car market, they will ask for 550 thousand rubles for this.

General impressions of the car

And yet the Czechs are great! Salon Octavia 2nd generation made for man; materials of excellent quality are used, there are a lot of shelves and pockets for small things, even native music is impressive. However, in general, everything looks a bit boring. Two things are annoying: a rough seam on the steering wheel braid and the fact that the car warms up for a long time. Although, they say, this is normal for Octavia in winter.

In addition to a tactilely unpleasant seam on the steering wheel, you can add to the list of shortcomings: poor sound insulation, heavy doors, not the best visibility and not a good location for the ashtray. This is if you really carp. In all other respects, the 2nd generation Skoda Octavia is smarter than many classmates.

A 1.4 TSI engine with 122 horsepower paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG robot, someone can be misled about the possibilities. But not everything is so simple - the dynamics of Octavia is a strong four. But, in my opinion, the ideal option for this car would be a 1.8 Turbo petrol paired with a manual or automatic transmission, depending on preference. Although, the robot does not work badly - it changes gears quickly and smoothly.

In general, the comfort in the cabin is good. By the way, in Russia the car comes with a package for bad roads. If you really have to drive on those, he will help. But in places where irregularities are artificial, for example, a speed bump, at a speed of 20-30 km / h, weak blows can be heard in front. And, again, the owners say that this is normal for Octavia. What do auto mechanics say about the car? What are the technical weaknesses of the Skoda Octavia 2?

Engine

Of the most frequent malfunctions of the 2nd generation Skoda Octavia engine, first of all, I would like to note: timing chain stretching. In second place are: the failure of the bypass valve of the turbocharger, due to which the engine heats up and loses traction, and the failure of the turbine control valve. In addition, the pipes of the cooling system sometimes crack, due to which antifreeze begins to leak, and the engine overheats.

But there is a downside - it takes a long time to warm up. Plus, it happens that in winter it is difficult to start the engine, and if you start it, a bunch of extraneous noises are heard at idle. True, after warming up, everything subsides by itself. There are also complaints from the owners about the increased oil appetite of the motor. But here, often, the technical condition is to blame. If everything is in order in this regard, TSI does not eat more than 200 ml per 1000 km.

Box

Much has been said about the DSG robot. Its main problem is the failure of the clutch disc. Why is he breaking down? First, the disk itself has a small resource. Secondly, it quickly overheats when driving in the heat, in traffic jams, during sudden starts, and this can break. And, on the contrary, it can be “led” due to severe hypothermia, for example, during long stops when it is deep minus outside.

Problems with the sensitive mechatronics of the DSG are systematic. By the way, there were so many complaints and criticisms about this box that even at the legislative level they wanted to ban the import of cars with DSG into Russia. Although, if you dig into the club forums, or chat with the owners of cars with DSG, there are many examples that there were no problems with it at all - extremely positive emotions.

There are two helpful tips for this:

  1. Do not start abruptly
  2. When stopping at traffic lights and in traffic jams, do not apply the brake, use the parking brake instead

Suspension

Auto mechanics say a lot of positive things about the suspension, but there are still minor flaws. For example, stabilizer bushings, front and rear levers often fail. Here you can add weak wheel bearings (rarely which lives up to 100 thousand kilometers). Well, and, of course, the brake pads. True, their replacement depends on the driving style.

Electrician

In the case of an electrician, we can only talk about minor flaws. The registration plate lights often burn out, the contacts on the headlights melt, the instrument panel lights burn out, and the cigarette lighter fails. Many owners complain about the tank opening button (a rather unpleasant situation when you stand at a gas station and cannot open the tank, and a queue forms behind), many scold the unpredictable rain sensor.

Everyday problems

Most often, owners of the 2nd generation Skoda Octavia complain about the ill-conceived design of the tailgate. This is manifested by the fact that when it rains outside, when the tailgate is opened, water is poured into the trunk. A trifle, of course, but unpleasant. In the Russian-assembled Octavia, thresholds peel off from time to time and moldings peel off. And, of course, the stove - frankly speaking, it is weak for our winter.

findings

Today, dealers sell the 3rd generation of the model. In the same configuration, but with additional options, the new Octavia costs from 1,200,000 rubles. The model has become noticeably faster, more powerful and more economical. As they say, there is progress! Taking into account the money spent on repairs, the benefit when buying a used Octavia 2 generation will be 620-630 thousand rubles.

More than 90% of the owners of the 2nd generation Skoda Octavia do not regret their purchase, and, according to statistics, this is almost a record. The main thing that they appreciate in a car is reliability, practicality and low maintenance costs. There are almost no serious sores: crickets over time, a weak stove and bad regular tires. In the secondary market, the choice is huge, and it is not difficult to find the right equipment, and, as a rule, this will be a very profitable purchase.

14.07.2016

Second generation Skoda Octavia A5 produced from 2008 to the end of 2012. Thanks to the large and expressive headlights, the car was nicknamed "Big-eyed", although it must be admitted that many people give her their sympathy not only for beautiful eyes. Like any used car, this car has its advantages and disadvantages, about them today we'll talk.

Advantages and disadvantages of the second generation Skoda Octavia A5

Traditionally, the Skoda Octavia is presented in three versions - this is the “liftback” that has received the most distribution among us; "universal combi", as well as its pseudo off-road version called "Scout", which differs from the usual station wagon with an additional plastic body kit around the entire perimeter of the body and increased ground clearance. In general, as experience has shown, the car body has good corrosion resistance. The disadvantages of body parts include front fog lights, which can fog up. In addition, daytime running light bulbs do not have a long resource, on average they work no more than a year. The cause of the breakdown is the burnout of the contact group, the base cover also becomes unusable, so you have to change the light bulbs along with the base. The tailgate lock is also not reliable, the limit switch often fails in it, for this reason the light bulb does not light inside the trunk.

During operation, problems with electric windows were identified, it is not uncommon when trying to raise the glass, the owners are faced with the fact that the glass starts to rise and then go down by itself. This happens due to contamination of the guides, and in order for the motor not to burn out, the thermal protection is activated, the system throws the glass down. This problem is fixed quite easily, experts recommend cleaning the guides from dirt and lubricating them with silicone. The owners of the Skoda Octavia A5 quite often criticize the interior air conditioning system, or rather its compressor, which turned out to be very unreliable. As well as the button for opening the central lock, over time, the contact group wears out in it, people begin to press harder on the button and as a result it stops working and fails.

Engines

The range of engines intended for the second generation of the Skoda Octavia A5 has been noticeably updated, especially gasoline engines. In this version, new engines of the TSI family with turbocharging and a direct fuel injection system, with a volume of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 liters, began to be used, the last engine replaced the two-liter FSI familiar from the pre-styling version, but the first two were intended only for European markets and are rare. The diesel version has a new 1.6-liter engine, but cars with such an engine were not officially delivered to us. The rest of the power units that were installed on this car are well known from the pre-styling version.

As domestic operating experience has shown, the 1.8-liter TSI engine delivers the most problems, quite often the owners in their reviews describe the problem of increased oil consumption. For example, during active operation, the consumption can be 500 - 800 grams per thousand kilometers. In addition, if you drive with a low oil level, the hydraulic chain tensioner may fail, because of this the chain may slip over the crankshaft gears, this will lead to a fatal meeting of the valves with the pistons. Owners of the Skoda Octavia A5 with this type of engine often note problems with the pump (loss of tightness and increased noise of the robot), turbine control solenoid valves, and the high pressure fuel pump also often fails. At the same time, it should be noted that the manufacturer was aware of this problem, and in the middle of 2010 upgraded this engine, eliminating all weaknesses, so it is recommended to choose versions that have been produced since the second half of 2010.

Transmission

The choice of gearboxes designed for the Skoda Octavia A5 is quite diverse, five- and six-speed manuals, a six-speed automatic, and a DSG robot are available for the car. As operating experience shows, the robotic transmission delivers the most problems, which are manifested by characteristic jerks during switching from first to second gear and turning on reverse. Experienced owners recommend reflashing the electronic control unit, if this procedure does not solve the problem, then you will have to change the faulty mechatronics unit or the worn clutch package. Mechanical and automatic transmission serve without any complaints. Is it possible to criticize a little the mechanics, which was installed in tandem with diesel engines, with a run of about 150,000 km, the two-mass flywheel begins to crumble, this malfunction is manifested by a characteristic crunch and knock during gear changes.

Suspension Skoda Octavia A5

Structurally, the suspension of the Skoda Octavia A5 is no different from the pre-styling version, a MacPherson-type suspension is installed in front, and a multi-link rear, anti-roll bars are installed on both axles. A serviceable suspension will provide this car with a fairly good energy intensity, as well as good stability and handling. The only thing to remember when choosing a charged version of the RS (equipped with sports dampers and low-profile tires) is that such a car will be quite rigid, but at the same time it will have excellent stability and controllability.

First of all, in the front suspension, the rear silent blocks of the front levers fail, this happens at a mileage of 80,000 km. The stabilizer struts take care of 100,000 km, the front silent blocks go more than 140 thousand km, and the ball bearings up to 200,000 km. Although maintenance is often difficult, over time, the metal bolts of the rear silent blocks clip to the aluminum subframe become firmly attached to the aluminum subframe, and easily break when unscrewed. The rear multi-link also serves well, the bushings and struts of the rear stabilizer serve more than 100,000 km, the rubber bands of the rear breakup levers go 120-150 thousand. Wheel bearings also work well, but when they need to be replaced, you will have to fork out, since they need to be changed along with the hub.

Outcome.

It won the hearts of many pragmatic motorists - with its good functionality, practicality, quite attractive appearance and, in general, not bad reliability.

Advantages:

  • Nice design.
  • Strong and comfortable running.
  • Small fuel consumption.
  • Roomy interior and trunk.

Disadvantages:

  • Unreliable DSG transmission.
  • Increased oil consumption.
  • Unreliability of salon equipment.

If you are or have been the owner of this brand of car, please share your experience, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of the car. Perhaps your review will help others choose boo automobile.
