  • the permitted weight is higher by 110 kg - 2620 kg.

“Whatever you call a yacht, so it will float” - these words from a children's book perfectly match the Hyundai Terracan. In translation Terracan sounds proudly - Khan of the Earth, but even its owners call it a "cockroach".

Koreans are hardworking and calculating people, and in order not to waste won, they made a knight's move. We took a proven chassis and a Hyundai Galloper unit base and put a new body on it. This is how Terracan was born in 2000. From an economic point of view, the approach is undoubtedly correct, but from a practical point of view, it turned out that it is not very good. No correction was made for the markedly increased weight by Korean engineers. And that's why the "cockroach" has a couple of branded sores that are almost never found on Galloper. As we were told in a specialized service, three out of ten people who come to the Terracan MOT have bent front steering knuckles. True, it is not easy to understand that they have lost their geometry. After all, even a fully serviceable car does not shine with handling. It is prone to goats, very soft and roll in corners, and the steering response leaves much to be desired. The second problem, due to the increased weight, manifested itself in the rear suspension springs. They sink rather quickly, and this is without operation in full load modes.

At the end of 2004, the Terracan received minor changes in appearance, but all the technical stuffing remained the same.

ATTENTION REQUIRED
Let's walk through the components and assemblies that live under the bottom. In the rear suspension, in addition to the springs mentioned, shock absorbers do not last very long. The shock absorbers are simple gas-oil, and if they have leaked, then it is better to buy not native "Hyundai" ones, but Kayaba. In the transfer case, the electric drive for connecting the front axle and the mechanical part that it controls fail. Problems in the vacuum part are also possible. Moreover, without a comprehensive diagnosis, it will most likely not be possible to understand what exactly happened to the transmission. And in models with the ATT system, there is one feature associated with the ABS module. The following regularity is noted: if the battery is discharged 3-4 times in the car "to zero", the brains of the ABS can "go off the rails." And then the four-wheel drive will not work, because the ATT computer analyzes the signals from the ABS sensors. By the way, there were also cheap rear-wheel drive versions.

As for the gearboxes, they are quite reliable: this applies both to the automatic transmission, which is simple in design, and to the manual transmission.

And finally, about the engines. There were three motors for the model. With a petrol 3.5-liter (195-200 hp) there are no problems, he eats himself an immodest amount of fuel, and that's it. True, it is imperative to keep an eye on the numerous radiators, including the oil one (diesel engines also have it), which begins to leak with age.

The turbo diesel 2.9 L (150-163 HP) with common rail fuel injection is a time bomb. It is impossible to adjust and repair its fuel equipment even in the capital. If you manage to solve the problem by replacing the pump injectors (10,000 rubles apiece) - consider yourself lucky.

The second turbodiesel 2.5 L (100 HP), which uses a system with balancer shafts, is made under license from Mitsubishi. Repair of the injection pump for this motor is quite real and will cost 8,000-20,000 rubles.

Turbines for both diesel engines, if you do not forget to cool them at idle, are hardy. All motors with a timing belt drive, routine replacement of which is carried out after 60 thousand km of run. In case of belt breaks, in the best case scenario, it will be possible to get rid of by replacing the rockers, in the worst case, to change the head assembly.

As for the body and frame, then even the cars of the first years of production are still worthy. True, the edges of the wheel arches, hidden under the linings, begin to rust with age. Despite the frame and crawler gear, the Terracan is a pure parquet SUV. It has small ground clearance and large overhangs, so torn off bumpers are a harsh reality.
Of course, someone will say that Terracan is not bad at least because it is inexpensive, but for some reason an aphorism comes to my mind that we are not rich enough to buy cheap things.

- I bought the car a little over a year ago. He changed several owners in Russia, and before that he traveled to Korea. Once in the winter I did not want to start, and it was because of low-quality diesel fuel. After being evacuated to a warm room, he came to life without any intervention. This was the only time he let me down. And all the other repair and maintenance work that I did, acted, so to speak, ahead of the curve. Immediately after the purchase, I changed the timing belts and balancer shafts, as well as the rollers and pump. The top 3.5-liter gasoline V6 (G6CU) with multipoint fuel injection produced 194 hp. and was available in almost all markets.

The 2.5 TD uses a vortex chamber injection system. The motor is considered reliable and omnivorous, but too weak for such a large car. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 20 seconds! Therefore, it often has to be twisted. Ultimately, this has a detrimental effect on the durability of the turbodiesel.

So, with high mileage, the engine often begins to eat up oil. Replacement of rings and liners will be required. In addition, episodes with cranking of the liners, destruction of the crankshaft, and even cracks in the cylinders are observed. The fuel system of the more modern J3 CR with Common Rail injection system is very sensitive to the quality of diesel fuel. When refueling at proven gas stations, the fuel system is capable of traveling 200-250 thousand km.

The cylinder head here, too, may require replacement due to overheating, as a result of an uncontrolled leak of coolant. In addition, there are cases of bushings turning and connecting rods breaking.

The turbocharger of both diesel engines serves more than 150-200 thousand km. The cost of a new node is from 40,000 rubles.

The petrol V6 is the largest engine from the Sigma family, which was also installed in the first generation Kia Sorento. Its advantages: attractive performance, simple design (cast iron block and forged steel connecting rods), ease of installation of LPG. There is only one serious minus - very high fuel consumption. As a rule, the flagship engine does not raise questions.

Transmission

In a pair, the engine was assigned either a 5-speed mechanics or a 4-speed automatic. The petrol versions were equipped exclusively with automatic transmissions.

The manual transmission is very reliable. But the Terracan's dual-mass flywheel with manual transmission and 2.9 CRDI sometimes requires replacement after 100-150 thousand km. The front-wheel drive in most Terracans is forcibly connected - the EST transmission. A TOD automatic transmission was also available. Here, the front wheels were connected when the rear wheels slipped using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. It can transfer up to 50% of the thrust to the front axle, and if necessary, the clutch can be locked.

The transmission type is easily identified by the mode selector switch. In models with EST you will find a 3-position switch - 4L-4H-2H, and with a TOD a two-position switch - AUTO and LOW.

Some models are equipped with an optional rear axle limited slip differential (LSD).

Rear-wheel drive versions were also offered - only with diesel engines. In these modifications, there is no cross member with front axle mounting brackets on the frame.

Faults in the all-wheel drive system after 150-200 thousand km are quite common, especially if you regularly knead the dirt. For example, the front axle connection valve fails, or the gearbox electric drive starts to strike. In addition, the drive chain is stretched (13,000 rubles), and in the TOD automatic transmission, in addition, it may be necessary to replace the electromagnetic clutch and clutches. The cost of the repair will be about 40,000 rubles.

After 200-250 thousand km, most likely, a bulkhead of the propeller shafts will be required. The crosspieces (1,000 rubles) of the shafts and the CV joint of the front universal joint wear out (3,000 rubles). Undercarriage

After 150-200 thousand km, the bearings of the power steering pump can buzz, or extraneous forces appear on the steering wheel. The cost of a new pump is about 7,000 rubles.

After 7-10 years, it is necessary to change the lines of the brake system. Tubes rust and hoses break. The cost of a complete set of tubes is about 5,000 rubles.

Typical problems and malfunctions

In many instances, traces of corrosion can already be found on the frame and body. Special attention should be paid to the VIN number, which is located on the frame behind the rear right wheel. If corrosion destroys it, it will become impossible to re-register the SUV.

Favorite places for rust on the body: tailgate, bottom of doors and bonnet, windshield frame, side skirts, wheel arches and bumper attachment points. Reddish spots can be hidden under various trims and moldings. The body paint is very sensitive to scratches.
