Oil filters - expertise. Oil filters - expertise Oil filter with 110

As you know, the oil circulating through the engine lubrication system must be filtered from oxidation products, soot and wear particles. These are the tasks that the oil filter performs. Most modern engines are full flow - all the oil circulating through the lubrication system passes through it. The durability of the engine depends on the design and quality of the oil filter. But if the design is now the same for everyone, then sometimes problems arise with quality.

An automobile oil filter consists of a filter element, a check valve and a bypass valve, combined in one housing. Most often, special cardboard with special impregnation is used as a filter element, which is corrugated into a multi-beam “star”, closed at the ends. The degree of filtration depends on the quality of bonding of cardboard to the flanges. If the sizing is not continuous, then unrefined oil will get to the engine parts, accelerating their wear. When the adhesive seam is weak, oil pressure can damage it, and again, unrefined oil will enter the lubrication system. Laying the filter cardboard in a “star” is used to increase the working surface: the larger the area of the filter curtain, the longer the filter will work. It is a common belief that numerous filter manufacturers use the same cardboard, impregnating it with “branded” compounds.

If the filter cardboard is completely clogged with oxidation and wear products, the engine may be left without lubrication altogether. In this case, the filter provides bypass valve, allowing unrefined oil to enter the lubrication system. The same valve will help if you use too much thick oil or its solidification at low temperatures, when it is not able to pass through the filter.

Check valve The filter is designed to prevent oil from draining from the lubrication system, so that after starting the engine, the pressure in it reaches the operating value faster. The quality of operation of the check valve can be judged by how quickly the emergency oil pressure indicator on the instrument panel (“oil can”) goes out after starting the engine. It is believed that if the “oiler” lights up for less than seven seconds, then everything is normal. Ideally, it goes out immediately after starting the engine.

On the Irkutsk market, the number of filter brands has exceeded two dozen, and their consumer qualities are often discussed among car owners. We decided to conduct our own examination of oil filters and see what we can trust. As an experiment, a filter was selected for Toyota engines with the index C-110, which is designated by the company VIC (it is represented by Japanese and Korean products, the former being twice as expensive, and the latter due to Low quality are in low demand - we managed to find only one copy for sale, and since we needed at least two products, we did not buy it).

The purchased filters were demonstrated to specialists: two “originals” Toyota were recognized as a fake due to the closed fold rather than sealed box. Additionally, the necessary products were purchased, again for two types - for light and harsh conditions operation.

TOYOTA 90915-10003 Japan, Denso, Genuine Parts, price 350-420 rub.

The box closes with a fold, and the engine indices for use are indicated in hieroglyphs and in English. A neat product in black with clear inscriptions, the flange is covered with a film with a tab for opening and pierced for ventilation. Sealing ring red- brown color and shaped with reliable fixation, lubricated grease. Check valve orange, through central hole The bypass valve is clearly visible. The check valve holes have burrs, the valve rubber fits large diameter. The filter element is solidly molded from a finely porous material, such as construction foam, dry, and easily crumbles with a fingernail. The shape of the filter element is a 12-pointed star with a plastic glass frame inside. There is a large diameter steel bypass valve at the bottom of the glass. The filter element rests on the bottom of the housing through a shaped steel spring flange. The check valve in the upper part is separated from the filter element by a lightweight cardboard 6-spoke flange, the purpose of which is most likely to center the filter element in the housing. If you don’t know that Toyota has been using oil filters with a solid-molded filter element (along with cardboard ones) for several years now, then the product could be mistaken for a fake - at first glance, the filtration area is too small.

TOYOTA 90915-YZZC5 Japan, Denso, Genuine Parts, price 200-250 rub.

The box closes with a fold, the inscriptions are the same as on the previous filter. The height of the box is 3 mm less. Externally, the filter is very similar to the previous one, only a little shorter and lighter. The o-ring is shaped, black, lubricated with grease and securely fixed. The check valve is black; the absence of a bypass valve is clearly visible through the hole. The check valve holes are burred and the flange steel is covered with rust around them. The valve rubber is of the same shape as the previous one and also fits over a large diameter, but is noticeably stiffer. There is nothing between the filter element and the valve. The element itself is made of the same material as the previous one, and on the same glass, only there are no longer 12, but 9 rays, in groups of three. It rests directly on the bottom of the housing. If the filtration area of the previous filter was puzzling, then this one is even smaller, and accordingly the time of its full operation is shorter. Sellers claim that these are branded filters, only for light operating conditions and warm climates. This may be true, but such filters are not officially listed anywhere, their designations are not even in the list of analogues of other filter manufacturers (there is a previous one). After disassembling such a filter, it becomes clear that it will not work effectively for the full period of time, and when clogged, it will leave the engine lubrication system without oil due to the lack of a bypass valve. The engine will run without lubrication when thick oil is used in cold weather, at least until the oil warms up. So, if the seller does not warn you about the features of this filter, disaster is not far away.

M Filter MH3347 Finland, 200 rub.

The box, which closes with a fold, is much larger than the filter itself - so it even wrinkled. The filter is painted with golden metallic enamel. A neat product, with a flange covered with film, but under the film the steel is covered with rust. The black rectangular O-ring is well fixed in the groove. The check valve is also black. The only filter that does not have a 14-sided socket on the bottom for unscrewing with a puller. The rubber of the check valve is soft and is pressed by a spring-loaded flange, which gives confidence in the good performance of the unit. The check valve is plastic, spherical in shape, pressed by a spring and, despite a slight distortion, “sits” tightly. Filter element with an area of 68 thousand square meters. mm from yellow cardboard, the ends of which are glued together. The filter element, which is not laid perfectly, is glued securely to the steel flanges. Oil is unlikely to find a way past the filter and will not be able to damage it during operation.

ZIC S-110 OEM 990915-10001 Korea, price 70 rub.

The first letter in the designation of this filter is more similar to the Cyrillic alphabet than the traditional Z. On the packaging there are numbers of Japanese filters, of which it is an analogue. On the box are instructions in Russian for installation and a very small drawing showing the design of the product. The flange is covered with a film, the o-ring of the figured section is well secured, the check valve is brown. The holes of the check valve are burred, its rubber, adjacent to the large diameter, is hard. At temperatures around 0 degrees it becomes even tougher. Cardboard filter element, area 73 thousand square meters. mm, yellow in color, thin to the touch, connected into a ring with gluing that did not withstand our manipulations. Not critical, but alarming. The flanges of the filter element are steel, well glued. The check valve is plastic, VAZ type, located inside the filter element. The latter is pressed by a spring.

SACURA C-1139 Japan, price 60 rub.

On the box, in addition to the filter designation, there is the inscription Toyota 90915-03001 (the number of a similar branded filter). A neat, light gray filter with clear inscriptions, the flange is covered with a film without a hole, the company name and logo are printed on the film, as well as the inscription Genuine Filter. The o-ring is shaped, black, securely fixed, the check valve is brown. The check valve holes have burrs, the valve itself is adjacent to the flange along a large diameter and is somewhat reminiscent of a ZIC. The filter element is made of light brown cardboard, with an area of 70 thousand square meters. mm, also reminiscent of ZIC. The ends of the cardboard curtain are sealed with a steel clamp, and the cardboard is securely glued to the steel flanges. The inner steel glass of the filter element with spirally arranged small holes, the size of which raises doubts about the performance of the filter in thick oil. The filter element rests on the bottom of the housing through a powerful spring and a steel flange.

Black filter housing with clear markings in English and Japanese. The flange is covered with a film with a tongue and a hole, the thread in the flange has its own peculiarity, each of its turns is as if forked - this is a unique way to prevent unscrewing. The black shaped O-ring is securely fastened, the check valve is brown. The check valve holes are burr-free, the valve rubber is soft and fits over a large diameter. Cardboard filter element with an area of 78.1 square meters. mm, its ends are connected with a steel clamp, and it is glued to the steel flanges with a durable sealant. A steel check valve of small diameter with a weak spring is located inside the filter element, which rests on the bottom through a steel shaped flange. Interesting feature- on the upper flange of the filter element the model of the S-110 filter and the date of its manufacture are written.

Fram PH 4967 European Union, price 150-170 rub.

On a box larger than the filter, the size is English language The car models and engines on which this filter is installed are shown. The filter housing is smaller than usual, painted black with easy to read inscriptions. There is no film covering the flange, the black rectangular o-ring holds up well, and the check valve is also black. The check valve holes are without burrs, with traces of their cleaning. The valve rubber is thin, soft, pressed by a stamped spring of complex shape along a large diameter, but it seems to be adjacent to the flange with its entire surface. The bypass valve with a rubber seat is located inside the filter element. The last of the well laid yellow cardboard is fastened with a steel plate, with steel flanges and with a steel cup inside, is well sealed and has an area of 67.2 square meters. mm. A box with a sealed lid, on it there are hieroglyphs and engine designations in English. An exact copy of the same filter, but in a fold-closed box. One small difference was still found, a flange with check valve holes with inside covered with rust, it even imprinted on the rubber of the valve. After a close acquaintance with such a product, there is no desire to use it, despite the brand name and assurances from sellers about its suitability for light operating conditions. We simply cannot have such things, even in the summer.
TESTS

How can oil filters be tested under real operating conditions? How is it screwed onto the fitting? Tight, light, how many turns? How many seconds after the first start does the oil pressure indicator go out? How many seconds does it take for the pressure to return to normal when starting a hot engine? How will the oiler indicator on the instrument panel behave when starting a cold engine? And won't oil leak from under the filter after installing it?

You can immediately say that there are differences between the filters, but none of them showed extreme tendencies, and none of them leaked oil. The “oil can” did not burn for more than three seconds with any filter under any circumstances. There was a surprise when screwing it onto the fitting: the ZIC rested on the flange after just one and a half turns, while most needed more than two and a half turns. Maybe these 1.5 turns will be quite enough for normal operation. But it’s still scary to tighten it too tightly and leave it loose, in case the oil pressure breaks the thread.

To summarize the results of the work, each filter was scored on a 5-point system with pluses and minuses. The results are shown in the table. By the way, most oil change stations have a good choice filters from the most inexpensive to branded ones. Branded service stations work, of course, with branded products, but they are unlikely to refuse you if you bring your “favorite” filter with you. It is true that in this case the owner of the car assumes responsibility.

Of course, it would be a good idea to check the filters for the degree of oil filtration (the amount of particles passed through), the response pressure of the bypass valve, and the durability of the filter. Unfortunately, there is no equipment in the region that could be used to conduct these studies.

Finally, a practical observation. Before installing the filter, you need to fill it with oil. So, there is no need to fill more than half of the filter volume; when wrapping it, there is a high probability that some of it will leak out. If you fill the filter to the top with a thin stream, then there is no need to add more, the oil will be absorbed into the cardboard and it will required level: The cardboard is wet and will quickly fill with oil when the engine starts running.

TOYOTA 90915-1003 Japan, Denso, Genuine Parts, price 350-450 rubles.

A copy of both the outside and inside of the filter with the same designation, only in a box sealed with glue. Vendors market this filter as a heavy-duty product. Our conditions for him will most likely be critical.

For many years now filter VIC C-110– my constant choice, so I decided to leave my review about it. I have been using it since the beginning of the 2000s and to this day on engines such as 5A-FE, 3S-FE, 1SZ-FE. There have never been any complaints. In general, it is quite difficult for the average consumer to judge the operation of a filter; a filter is a kind of “thing in itself”, and it is impossible to see what is happening there. Therefore, you rely mainly on your own experience, on reviews in car magazines and on car forums. The opinion of the Internet community as a whole towards VIC products is positive. I compiled it even before virtual communication reached impressive proportions.

What do we expect from a good oil filter? So that it does not fail, first of all, in winter. That is, so that the oil does not squeeze out from under it, especially when it is thickened from severe frost. The VIC filter has never let me down, which is a big plus for it. The next thing that is available to the average buyer is the opportunity to evaluate the manufacturing quality of the filter itself and its packaging. Everything here is also good level. A box with a good print, informative. Specified serial numbers original spare parts Toyotas this duplicate is compatible with.

The types of engines this filter is suitable for are also indicated.

The countries for which VIC products are certified are indicated. Russia is among them. We also see that the filter was made in Japan, which is another plus for reliability and quality.

The filter itself is strictly black, all the main information is duplicated on its body. The numbers 1-2-3-4 are printed on four sides. This is done for the convenience of tightening the filter: from the moment the filter seal comes into contact with the engine block, it is necessary to screw it ¾ of a turn to ensure the necessary adhesive force. The numbers help you navigate this. The seal and holes on the filter are protected with film to prevent foreign particles from getting into it during transportation and before installation on the engine.

A bypass valve is visible at the bottom of the filter, which is necessary for the passage of thick, cold oil in the first minutes of engine operation, while movement through the filter element is still difficult.

Also visible is the orange anti-drain valve, which prevents oil from leaking out of the filter when the engine is turned off. Sealing rubber has a semicircular shape. All parts and elements of the filter are visually made with high quality and high level. There are also reports on the Internet from craftsmen who opened VIC filters to examine the filter element. Reviews about the material and area of the curtains are positive.

So, in the end, we have a decent oil filter that serves faithfully without much fanfare. Another advantage is the reasonable price, which at all times was 1.5-2 times lower than the original Toyota filters. Therefore, I can recommend these filters as a good and inexpensive duplicate.

This is a product of EIKEN INDUSTRIES CO., LTD. In their design, VIC oil filters are no different from the original ones. VIC oil filters are produced only in Japan.
What distinguishes VIC oil filters from analogues?
1. The highest quality materials from which the oil filter is made.
2. Excellent filtering ability.
3. Significantly larger filtration area.
4. Increased service life.
