3 Preparing for Replacement - Materials Required

  • container for draining liquid;
  • dry rags;

4 Execution of work

The magnets on the filter should be cleaned of dirt and installed on a new filter element. When installing a fresh filter, the O-ring must be lubricated with variator fluid.

When the filter is in place, the tray can be mounted. The gasket is used only a new one, it is placed evenly so that the holes on it and on the pallet coincide. Any damage to the gasket is not allowed. If you decide to make a partial oil change, then immediately install a new drain plug gasket. If full, then use the old one for now.

The next step is to replace the filter in the heat exchanger (oil cooler). To do this, first you need to unscrew its cover and pull out the old filter element. Install a new filter, coat the O-ring with CVT oil and replace the oil cooler cover.

You can now start filling with fresh fluid. This is done through the filler pipe using a funnel. Sufficiency is determined by the dipstick. Feel free to fill in the volume of liquid that has been drained. If after that the oil does not reach the Cold mark, then add until this happens.

This completes the partial change of the variator oil. If it is decided to make a complete replacement, then you need to perform several more stages of work.

Complete replacement - additional steps

Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. After this time, you need to operate the gear selector, passing all possible positions, and then set the handle to the "P" or "N" position. Stop the engine, drain the oil through the hole in the sump and refill with fresh oil as described above.

Start the engine again, let the units warm up and operate the selector. Then drain some oil through the pan to assess its condition. If it is still dirty, you will have to completely drain it again and replace it with a fresh one. This should be repeated until the liquid is clear.

When the oil is filled, you need to firmly install the dipstick and start the car. Now you can take a ride so that the variator and the fluid in it are warmed up. After stopping, pull out the dipstick again and check the oil level. It must be between labels on the Hot interval. If it is lower, then it is necessary to add liquid to the desired level.

It is very important that the fluid level in the variator is not more and not less than what is supposed to be. If it is less, then the pump, together with the lubricant, will begin to drive air through the system. Oxidation and overheating of the oil will occur. Shift delays, slippage of the variator belt, brake and clutch are also possible.

If the liquid is more than the required level, then it will begin to foam due to excessive pressure in the system. As a result, the same problems will appear as with a low oil level. In addition, the foam will enter the CVT crankcase vent and leak as a result.

After changing the oil in the variator, you can reset the fluid degradation counter in the CVT (oil degradation level) variator. It is also called “Oil aging counter” in another way. This procedure is optional and also requires special hardware and software.

Changing the oil in the variator is a necessary procedure. You can do it yourself, since no special skills are required. But before doing such work, you need to theoretically study all the points and evaluate your strengths.

After the oil stops dripping, we measure the exact amount of the drained oil, approximately 5.8-6 liters will turn out, because the same amount will need to be poured.

Let's start flushing. The remaining oil in the sump is drained into a container, in general, you should get 6.2-6.3 liters of oil. In most cases, there will be wear products in the pallet - metal shavings, we clean the pallet with special cleaning agents and let it dry. Now we remove the coarse filter of the Mitsubishi Outlander variator, we also rinse it and leave it to dry. In the meantime, we get rid of the old crankcase gasket. We also inspect all units for breakdowns, and this can only be done at car services that can provide the whole range of these works, because an inexperienced car owner may simply not notice the malfunction, which will lead to sad consequences. After that, we install the filter and crankcase with a gasket in their places, and do not forget to check that all parts after cleaning are in their places, for example, magnets.
