The structure of the gas tank vaz 2109. How to remove the fuel tank from the car. Application of new materials

Replacing the gas tank with a VAZ 2109 is carried out in case of penetration. Or when a fuel leak occurs at the junction (in this case, you can try to solder it).
The appearance of a leak as a result of the destruction of the walls of the tank is treated by replacing it. When the fuel line on the VAZ 2109 becomes clogged, removing the gas tank and cleaning it solves this problem, and the grid of the electric fuel pump should be replaced.
If necessary, each owner of the car can replace it on his own.
Do not try to succumb to advertising that offers to buy Super - an additive that, when poured into a tank, leads to the complete absorption of dirt. Know that this method is good only as a preventive one, for example, every 10,000 kilometers you fill in such a product, then it really helps to remove sediments and deposits, and not only from the gas tank, but also cleans the entire fuel line without any damage to your car.
In the case (and such cases are common among car owners) when the gas tank has never been cleaned on the VAZ 2109, the use of an additive will only complicate the problem.

What is a gas tank and why is it needed

Volume of the tank modern machine, allows the driver to drive more than five hundred kilometers without refueling.
It's time to figure out what is a much-needed and important unit fuel system:

  • The fuel tank is a special container for the safe storage of fuel, preventing leakage and loss due to evaporation.
  • Installed in the most safe place cars
  • The VAZ 2109 gasoline tank is located under the rear seat, since this area is the least deformed upon impact
  • Attached to the gas tank with band clamps
  • To provide him additional protection from damage, from the bottom can be protected by a metal sheet
  • To avoid fuel heating from parts exhaust system, it has thermal insulation pads

tank material

In the manufacture of tanks, three main materials are used: plastic (polyethylene, the most modern material), aluminum and steel:

  • Plastic, as the most modern, is often used in the production of gas tanks for cars
  • Plastic is convenient because it allows you to use the entire installation space more fully, make a container of almost any shape and size, get largest capacity fuel, which is most important
  • The main advantage of plastic is its resistance to corrosion.
  • However, plastic is permeable to hydrocarbons at the molecular level, therefore, in order to avoid micro leakage, the walls are made multilayer and the inner surface is additionally coated with fluorine.
  • Metal tanks are made by welding stamped steel sheets.
  • Mainly for diesel fuel, less common for gasoline, aluminum is used

How does fuel get into and out of the tank?

To fill the tank (simply refueling), a special filler neck:

  • It is the only part of it that is visible from the outside of the car.
  • The filler neck is located on the right or left above rear wing cars
  • The side of the location is of fundamental importance here
  • Some drivers who suffer from absent-mindedness are better off with the neck on the same side as the driver's door, this minimizes the risk of forgetting to remove the fuel gun from the tank when leaving the gas station
  • The neck is connected to the tank through a pipeline
  • The cross section provides it throughput up to 50 liters per minute
  • The neck is closed with a threaded lid, a hatch hides it from the outside, which can be opened from the passenger compartment using an electric or mechanical drive or manually if there is no lock on the hatch
  • Fuel enters the power system through the fuel intake, which is connected to the outgoing fuel line, excess fuel flows back through the return fuel line
  • The fuel pickup is protected by a mesh that is designed to coarse cleaning fuel from dirt
  • Inside the fuel tank of the machine with gasoline engine fits (photo below), which pressurizes the fuel in the system

  • The amount of fuel in the tank controls fuel gauge, which is combined with the pump into a single device
  • The sensor consists of a potentiometer and a float
  • When the fuel level changes, the float rises or falls, thereby causing a change (up or down) in the resistance of the potentiometer
  • This changes the voltage in the circuit, the arrow on the instrument panel changes its position
  • When fuel tank is a complex structure or has a large volume, two sensors can be installed in it, which work in parallel

Purpose of the ventilation system and device

In order to supply the engine with fuel normally (without interruptions), it is important to constantly maintain normal atmospheric pressure in the tank.
For this, there is a ventilation system:

  • The system neutralizes the vacuum that occurs during fuel consumption (using the installed ventilation valve)
  • Removes excess air that gets inside during the refueling process
  • In addition, it does not allow the pressure inside the tank to rise due to the expansion (evaporation) of the fuel due to heating.

The vacuum that occurs in the tank (or overpressure) can lead to unfortunate consequences:

  • Reducing the volume of the fuel tank
  • Fuel cut off
  • There is a possibility of damage to the fuel intake and even the fuel pump
  • If the pressure is too high, the container may rupture (burst)
  • Modern cars are equipped with a closed-type ventilation system.
  • That is, the tank does not come into direct contact with the atmosphere.
  • A special ventilation valve fights the resulting vacuum
  • In fact, he is ordinary check valve, which opens when the vacuum reaches a certain value
  • After the valve is opened, the internal pressure in the tank equalizes with atmospheric pressure.

  • Fuel vapors during refueling are removed by means of a capture system through a special ventilation pipeline, after which they enter the steam collector (adsorber), where they condense
  • When the canister is completely filled, then the purge system is activated and fuel is dumped into the intake manifold
  • Excessive pressure that occurs during heating is similarly relieved.
  • Additionally, the ventilation system is equipped with a gravity valve that prevents fuel from spilling if the car suddenly rolls over.

Removing the gas tank

To remove the gas tank on the VAZ 21093, we will prepare the tools (standard set) and then perform the following steps:

  • We de-energize the wiring by removing the battery terminals
  • We recline the lower rear seat cushion and bend the soundproofing (cut out part)
  • Loosen the screws holding the hatch cover

  • Remove the cover with the rubber gasket
  • Disconnect the wiring harness from

  • We unscrew the nut that secures the pump, under which the “mass” wiring is wound up
  • Removing the wire from the stud
  • Then, using the key "17", unscrew the fitting of the fuel supply pipe
  • And take her aside

  • In the same way, unscrew the fitting of the drain pipe
  • All subsequent operations are carried out under the bottom of the machine
  • First you need to remove the pipe coming from the filler neck
  • To do this, loosen the clamp that secures the pipe and then pull it off the neck

  • Similarly, the air outlet pipe and the separator pipe are removed from the fittings
  • Loosen the clamps and remove the fuel line pipes
  • We unscrew the nuts of the clamps fastening
  • Hold it with your hand to avoid falling.

  • Now you can remove the fuel tank, here an assistant will come in handy
  • Move the clamps securing it to the side so that they do not interfere and, together with an assistant, remove the tank from the machine
  • When the tank is removed, be sure to drain the remaining gasoline from it, unscrew the fasteners and remove the pump with the fuel sensor
  • Remove the sensor gasket, if necessary, replace it with a new one.
  • We examine the gas tank along the lines of the junction of the lower and upper parts
  • If you find a leak, rinse thoroughly and dry it.
  • Then you can solder the leak with soft solder with your own hands.

Warning: It is allowed to solder only a thoroughly washed (from the inside) and dried gas tank so that it does not contain fuel vapors, otherwise the vapors may ignite during soldering and the tank will explode. For washing, use detergents such as Lobomid, ML or MS.
Then, to remove the remnants of the detergent, steam and rinse the gas tank with a pressure of hot water. Thoroughly dry the gas tank from the inside

The price of the issue, with careless cleaning of the tank before soldering - your life!
So:

  • If necessary, glue the torn gaskets on the gas tank
  • We connect an ohmmeter to the terminals of the sensor indicating the fuel level and check its resistance at three main positions of the float
  • In the “empty gas tank” position (lowermost) the resistance is within 315-345 Ohm In the middle position (gas tank floor) -108-128 Ohm
  • And in the “full gas tank” position (topmost) it is allowed - no higher than 7 Ohm
  • When the resistance of the sensor is different from the specified, it is necessary to replace the fuel sensor

  • After washing the gas tank from dirt, we also wash the dirty filter
  • Shake the float
  • If there is gasoline inside it, it is recommended to replace the float, its tightness is broken
  • To replace the clamps that secure the gas tank, we remove them from the body brackets and install new ones.
  • Before putting the gas tank in place, it is necessary to remove the fuel sensor wiring inside the body

To make it easier for you to perform the procedures described above, we provide photographs with symbols:

In the event of such malfunctions carburetor engine cars VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 like, etc., you should pay attention to the cleanliness of the fuel lines and the cleanliness of the fuel tank of the car. The presence of clogging and contamination in them often leads to the carburetor and further to the engine, with the subsequent occurrence of the above consequences.

Preparatory work

Cleaning work should be carried out in a well-lit room or on the street. In advance, it is worth getting a flashlight, because you have to look inside the fuel tank to make sure it is clean.

— Before cleaning, drain the fuel from the tank.

The fuel tank of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 does not have drain hole, so draining the fuel from it is possible only through a hose, or after removing the tank from the car.

- Raise the rear seat in the car.

Under it, a hatch is made in the body for access to the fuel tank fuel intake. We remove it by unscrewing the screws securing it.

— Remove the fuel hoses (main line and return line).

To do this, loosen their clamps and move them from the fittings on the fuel intake. It should be noted that their landing on fittings is very tight. Therefore, when removing, it is best to help yourself with a 10 mm open-end wrench.

- Disconnect the fuel level sensor wiring harness from the fuel intake.

- Remove the fuel tank.

We unscrew the six fastening nuts with a 7 mm wrench and remove it from the fuel tank.

Before us is a hole for access to the internal cavity of the car's fuel tank. We start cleaning.

Cleaning the fuel tank of a VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 car

- We take a piece of rags, put it on a piece of steel wire and wipe it with the resulting device internal surfaces fuel tank.

Basically, sediments accumulate at its bottom. Often you can see reddish silty deposits - a consequence of the application low-quality gasoline with additives.

- Pour a bottle of acetone (0.5 - 1.0 liters) into the tank.

We are waiting for some time. You can even shake the car from side to side - shake the acetone and let it penetrate into all corners and soften the dirt.

Again we wipe the tank with a rag.

- Fill the tank with half a liter - a liter of gasoline.

Wipe again with a rag. Let's look at the result. If necessary, repeat the operation.

We collect everything in the reverse order.

Notes and additions

- Do not limit yourself to cleaning the fuel tank alone. It is also necessary to clean the fuel lines, strainers in the carburetor and on the fuel intake, replace the filter fine cleaning fuel.

If a fuel leak is detected from the gas tank, it is recommended to replace the gas tank. If the fuel pump mesh is often clogged, the gas tank should be removed and flushed.
If a leak is found along the junction of the upper and lower parts of the gas tank, these places can be soldered (it is recommended to do it in specialized workshops). To do this, pour out the remaining gasoline, thoroughly rinse and dry the gas tank. Then solder the leak with soft solder.

WARNING
You can only solder a thoroughly washed and dried gas tank that does not contain gasoline vapors, otherwise the vapors may ignite when soldering.
To flush the gas tank, use Lobomid, MS or ML detergents.

Every child knows why a gas tank is needed in a car. From the outside it seems that this is the simplest and most reliable element in the car. However, in the process long-term operation or as a result of an accident, the tank itself or its elements may be damaged. How to act in these situations, so as not to aggravate the problem, any driver should know.

The device and location of the gas tank VAZ 2108/09/14/15

The gas tank is one of the elements of the car's fuel system. Its main and only purpose is to store a certain amount of fuel. At the same time, storage is carried out as safely as possible, without leaks and fumes.

On VAZ 2108/09/14/15 vehicles, the fuel tank is installed under back seat. Therefore, even with serious head-on collision his damage will be minimal. The risk of leakage and ignition of the fuel will also be minimal.

The volume of the tank on VAZs is 43 liters (including a reserve of 4–6 liters). This volume should be enough for an autonomous car run of 400–600 kilometers.

The fuel tank on the VAZ 2108/09/14/15 is located under the rear seat

The gas tank on VAZ 2108/09/14/15 cars is attached to the body using two plate clamps. Fuel is poured into the tank through the neck on the right rear side of the body. Usually the neck is closed with a threaded cap.

The neck is connected to the cavity of the tank by a special filler tube. Inside the tank there are two drainage tubes connected through a hose to a separator - a device for trapping gasoline vapors. To prevent leakage of fuel from the separator, a double-acting valve is installed on the hose, which can operate in two directions. Fuel vapors that evaporate during driving return back to the tank and condense. On VAZ vehicles, the separator holds only seven liters, but this is enough to monitor the condition of the fuel in the tank.

In the upper part of the gas tank, another mandatory element of the fuel system is installed - a fuel level sensor that supplies dashboard information about the amount of gasoline in the tank. It is attached through a rubber gasket, and access to it is possible only through the rear seat in the cabin.

The fuel tanks of VAZ 2108/09/14/15 vehicles are made of lead-coated sheet steel - a strong, durable material. Traditionally, the tank capacity is welded from two halves and covered on the outside with dark enamel.

The metal body of the fuel tank is treated with anti-corrosion and coated with black paint.

The main malfunctions of the gas tank

The gas tank is made of strong durable material and serves during all term of operation of the car. However, in some situations it may need to be repaired. These situations are as follows.

    Fuel line blockage.

    A hole in the tank.

Leak on the welding line of the tank body.

The cause of clogged hoses can be dirt getting into the fuel mesh in the tank itself. The solution in this case is quite simple - periodically flush or change this mesh.

If a hole has formed in the tank as a result of mechanical shock, then it can no longer be repaired. In this case, the tank will need to be replaced.

If gasoline leaks from the welding line of the tank halves, you can try to solder this place. However, this procedure is very complicated and requires appropriate experience.

A gas tank with a large spread of corrosion cannot be repaired

Gas tank repair

Repairing a fuel tank is usually not a big deal. Much here depends on the nature of the damage and the skills and abilities of the car owner. Small holes in the case can be simply soldered, and large damage will require the use of a welding machine.

The tank itself does not always need to be welded or repaired. On VAZ 2108/09/14/15 cars, tank fastening elements or its components (for example, a neck or studs) often fail. Such malfunctions must be urgently eliminated - the safety of fuel storage in the tank is largely due to its fasteners, position relative to the body axis and tightness.

Necessary tools and accessories

The removal of the gas tank is carried out using a standard set of tools: wrenches different sizes, screwdrivers and a hammer in case any element is difficult to dismantle.

For washing, cleaning and repairing the tank, you will need:

    capacity for draining fuel;

    tire pump for compressed air supply;

    a hose connected to a hot water source;

    special washing liquids;

  • bolts and nuts;

    file;

    degreaser;

    sandpaper;

    ground paint.

Dismantling the gas tank

An assistant will be required to dismantle the fuel tank - in some situations, his participation will be necessary (for example, when you need to support the tank and disconnect the lines without damage). The order of work is the following.

Open the passenger compartment door and fold down the rear seat cushion. For convenience, the pillow can be taken out of the cabin.

Find the sound deadening sheet under the seat. There is a cutout in the sheet at the location of the gas tank. Lift the cutout and locate the gas tank hatch cover.

Unscrew the two screws from the cover and remove it together with the rubber seal.

Disconnect the block from the fuel level sensor terminal (just disconnect the connector).

Remove the wire from the stud.

Go under the car body - all subsequent work is carried out directly in the tank location area.

Loosen the filler pipe clamp and disconnect the fuel supply hose to the gas tank.

When dismantling the gas tank, the fuel pump is disconnected

    Remove the separator hose.

  1. Disconnect fuel lines.

When dismantling the gas tank, all fuel lines are disconnected

  2. Remove the two clamp bolts that secure the tank to the body. An assistant is needed here - one person unscrews the bolts, the other holds the tank.

Lower the front of the gas tank first, then the rear.

If there is no assistant, when removing the gas tank, you can use stands

Remove the fuel level sensor from the tank cavity.

Cleaning and flushing the gas tank

It is possible to clean and rinse the gas tank only after its complete dismantling.

However, some motorists perform this procedure without removing the tank from the car. They simply direct a jet of hot water under pressure into the neck. After steaming, about five liters of gasoline are poured into the tank, tightly closed with a cork and shaken thoroughly. The tank is then emptied and thoroughly dried. For drying it is recommended to use compressed air.

Gasoline can be washed in the tank cavity only after pre-steaming

For washing, it is recommended to use detergents such as MS, ML or Labomid. If the tank has not been washed for a long time, then it is best to fill it several times with detergent and rinse it with water. At the end of the wash, it is imperative to steam the internal cavities hot water then dry the tank.

Rust inside the gas tank is removed only special preparations- "rust converters". For thorough cleaning, about two liters of such a preparation are poured into the tank and shaken vigorously. After 15 minutes, along with the remnants of rust and dirt, the converter is poured out.

Dirt and rust should be removed from the outside of the gas tank and repainted

Repair of fuel tank elements

More often, individual elements of the fuel system located inside or outside the gas tank fail.

In all cases self repair details - it is quite doable and in garage conditions. It is important to correctly perform all stages of work and adhere to elementary rules security. Before any work with the gas tank, it must be thoroughly rinsed, as the combustible mixture can ignite at any time.

Stud replacement

The first sign of severe wear on the studs is the smell of gasoline in the cabin. Due to the depressurization of the fuel pump gasket, the smell of fuel begins to spread throughout the car.

The studs on the gas tank hatch under the rear seat are often broken or threaded off. Therefore, the gasket wears out quickly, and the tightness of the fuel system is lost.

If at least one pin breaks, the gas tank will be depressurized

To replace the studs, you will need to completely dismantle the gas tank, followed by washing and drying. The procedure is the following.

The studs are welded to the gas tank with inside- you will need to cut them down to the root.

File the cut surface with a file, creating a smooth base for new fasteners.

Attach the pressure ring of the pump and drill through its holes for new studs with a diameter of 4.5 mm.

In new holes with reverse side tank, insert M5 threaded bolts and tighten them with nuts.

Thus, the repair of studs consists in their complete or partial replacement threaded bolts of the same size.

Homemade studs are no different from factory ones, and their service life depends on the quality of the bolts used.

Float setting

In the gas tank system of VAZ cars important features performs a float. Its main task is to monitor the fuel level in the tank and transmit this data to the dashboard through the sensor.

If the float starts to “lie”, you should make sure that it is in good condition and that it works correctly. The procedure for checking the float is as follows.

Remove the rear seat from the passenger compartment.

Remove the gas tank hatch and remove the float bolted to the pump from the cavity.

Move the float spoke to right side to the end - this position corresponds to the zero fuel level on the instrument panel.

If the position is not zero, bend the tab.

After that, pull the float spoke all the way to the left. This position must match the value "1" on the instrument panel.

If the float position does not correspond to "1", bend the tab on the other side.

The far right indicator shows the level of fuel in the tank

After these simple manipulations, the float will work correctly. It should be noted that it fails extremely rarely, as it has the simplest structure.

Neck repair

The fuel filler neck can rot over time. For VAZ 2108/09/14/15, this is quite typical. Depending on the extent of the damage, the entire neck is replaced or repaired. The repair procedure is as follows.

Remove the neck from the tank.

Clean the damaged area, remove rust and paint, degrease the surface.

    Apply anti-corrosion primer.

In order to hermetically close the damage in the neck, pull rubber hoses of two different diameters over this place (first smaller, then larger) and fix them on both sides with metal clamps.

    Reinstall the neck.

The tank neck is a pipe that starts immediately under the cap

Repairing a fuel filler neck can take as little as 10-15 minutes after the primer has dried. Such a simple way to restore the pipe will allow you to use the tank for many more years.

A thick-walled hose will restore the tightness of the neck and extend its life

Gas tank replacement

Before replacing the tank, remove the negative cable from the battery. After that, together with an assistant, perform the following operations.

Install a new fuel level sensor gasket and with it lower the sensor into its place in the tank.

Lifting the tank first from the rear and then from the front side, install it on new clamps and fasten them to the body with new bolts.

Connect fuel hoses, separator and air tubes.

Go to the passenger compartment and connect the fuel level sensor and pump to the appropriate connectors.

Close and secure the sunroof and reinstall the seat cushion.

It is most convenient to carry out the replacement of the tank on a lift, and not on a flyover

The replacement of the gas tank, thus, is carried out in two planes - under the car and in the cabin. The design of the VAZ 2108, 2109, 2114 and 2115 does not make work more convenient and easy.

Video: installing and connecting a gas tank

After replacing the tank, you need to make sure that it is working. To do this, start the engine and see if there are any problems with the supply and fuel leaks.

Following the recommendations of a professional, repairing and replacing the gas tank on VAZ cars is quite simple. With periodic preventive cleaning and flushing of the tank cavity and careful driving, the replacement of this element will not be required throughout the entire life of the vehicle.
