In 1995, the Renault 19 was replaced by the Megane. Initially, the car was offered in only two body styles: a 5-door hatchback and a 3-door fastback coupe called the Coach. These two variants differ significantly in the design of the rear end of the body and the lamps with round diffusers for the coupe and ellipsoidal for the hatchback. In the fall of 2002, Renault presented the Megane II at the Paris Auto Show. A car with a strong personality and futuristic design. According to the plan of the French manufacturer, it should strengthen the popularity and position of Renault in the European automotive market.

The interior is ergonomic perfection. Everything is within reach, convenient and practical. The engine is started with the Start button. However, in order for the car to start, one more component is needed - a key card. The key is a card in the format of a business card or an ordinary bank card, only a little thicker, with buttons "Open", "Close" and "Climb into the trunk". Keys in the usual sense for Megane are not provided, but options are possible with cards.

Megane II is equipped with gasoline 16-valve engines: 1.4 l / 98 hp, 1.6 l / 115 hp, 2.0 l / 136 hp. and three turbodiesels with the Common Rail system: 1.5 liters (82 hp and 100 hp); 1.9 liters (120 hp). The equipment of the car naturally differs depending on the configuration. With a gradual rise in price, there are body-colored power mirrors and exterior door handles, automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor, an automatic sensor for outdoor lighting, air conditioning and 16-inch alloy wheels. Options include cruise control, bi-xenon headlights, climate control and a variety of music.

But the model with a sedan body in the Renault Megane II production range appeared only in October 2003. It is noteworthy that the sedan with the hatchback has 80% of the same components. Salon of the sedan repeats the hatchback one to one. The same dashboard, center console and soft plastic dashboard. But the U-shaped "handbrake" looks very original. Sports seats with the Renault Sport logo are extremely comfortable and moderately soft and provide decent comfort. They are equipped with all the necessary adjustments. The steering column is also adjustable for reach and tilt, which allows the driver to get an optimal comfort position. The instrument panel is framed with black "rings" in the corporate style of Renault Sport. Leather steering wheel with buttons for audio and cruise control has a comfortable "grip". But the center console is exactly the same as that of the "private" Megane.

The third generation Renault Megane in a five-door hatchback performance was presented in the fall of 2008 at the Paris Motor Show. The Renault Megane III coupe (three-door hatchback) and estate models saw the world at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

The third generation turned out to be not as extravagant as the previous one. If earlier the hatchback and coupe differed from each other in the shape of the side windows, now they are completely different cars. The hatchback embodies practicality, and the coupe, as it should be, selfishness, having lost in the rear view, ease of access and the volume of the luggage compartment.

Not a trace remained of the former chopped forms. Streamlined body, smooth lines, spectacular undershooting on the hood and front fenders. By the way, earlier the wings were plastic, but now they are steel. The coupe looks much more aggressive than its hatchback sibling. The three-door with a licked stern and silver inserts in the front bumper looks bright, dynamic and modern.

The dimensions of the cars are almost identical, differ only in height and are 4295 mm in length, 1808 mm in width, 1471 mm in height (the "height" of the hatchback, coupe is 4.8 cm lower), 2640 mm of wheelbase and 12 cm of ground clearance. That is, in relation to the previous generation, the car slightly increased its size. At the same time, the luggage compartment decreased slightly, 372 liters. the hatchback and 344 liters. in the coupe (folded rear seats increase the loading capacity to 1129 and 991 liters, respectively).

The station wagon version is as similar as possible in design to the hatchback, although it has a number of its own stylistic solutions. The length of the novelty is 263 mm longer than that of the "five-door" and is 4558 mm, and the wheelbase has "grown" by 62 mm and is equal to 2702 mm. Based on the increased wheelbase and rear end, special attention has been paid to maintaining a balance of dynamic proportions: the sloping roof, steeply sloping rear window and elongated side windows at the rear of the vehicle create an elegant, energetic profile.

The station wagon is ideal for a vacation with the whole family, because in addition to the spacious cabin, the luggage compartment also has impressive dimensions - 524 liters (with the rear seats folded down 1595 liters). Access to the luggage compartment is facilitated by a low sill: its height of 561 mm is the lowest in its segment. If necessary, the trunk of the Megane Estate can be divided into 2 separate zones: one large compartment and one smaller at the back, which makes it possible to adapt the space to the needs of the current time. Two additional storage compartments are provided under the floor.

Inside, the Megane III borrows all the best from the older models of the brand. The new design of the dashboard is reminiscent of Renault Laguna; higher quality materials have been used in the decoration. The hard plastic of the interior was replaced by soft materials - not only the front panel, but also the door upholstery. Handles and buttons have become more pleasant to the touch. The highlight of the interior of the third generation Megane is the original instrument architecture that combines functionality and beauty. A huge digital speedometer flaunts in the middle of the dashboard. The model got an electromechanical parking brake (it replaced the parking brake bracket in the Megane II). The seats can now be ordered not only with electric adjustments, but also with a "memory" of positions.

For Europe, an extensive line of gasoline (from 100 to 180 hp) and diesel (from 85 to 130 hp) engines is offered, but for Russia, only gasoline versions of 1.6 and 2 liters are provided. The hatchback relies on a 1.6-liter engine with 106 hp. with., aggregated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed automatic gearbox. The coupe is equipped with 1.6 liter engines. (110 HP, 6-speed manual gearbox) and 2.0 liters. (143 HP, CVT variator).

The driving characteristics of the third generation, first of all, were positively reflected by the use of a new engine subframe, new settings for the electric power steering with improved feedback and a rear beam with programmable stiffness, which made it possible to abandon the rear stabilizer. In addition to all of the above, the Megane Coupe is equipped with stiffer springs and has an even lower ground clearance, which adds to the sharpness of control, and a more powerful engine provides a fairly dynamic start. On the positive side, Renault's traditional high smoothness should be attributed, which is really important in Russian conditions.

In March 2010, the presentation of the third generation Renault Megane CC took place at the Geneva Motor Show. Its main difference from competitors is a glass folding roof with an area of ​​almost one square meter. A mechanism developed by the Karmann body shop allows the 110 kg roof to be folded down in just 21 seconds. Improved aerodynamics and sound insulation allow you to enjoy open-top riding up to a speed of 90 km / h.

With a length of 4.49 meters and a wheelbase of 2.61 meters, the Megane CC III convertible can accommodate four passengers in its cabin. The luggage compartment of the car has a volume of 417 liters with the roof up and 211 liters with the roof down.

Megane CC received six engine options: petrol 1.6 with 110 horsepower, 2.0 (140 hp) and 1.4 TCe (130 hp), turbo diesel 1.5 dCi (110 hp), 1.9 dCi (130 hp). s.) and 2.0 dCi (160 hp). The sports versions of the GT Line and GT are equipped with a 2.0 TCe with 180 horsepower. The engines are equipped with three types of gearboxes, the main of which is a 6-speed manual shift and two automatic ones, which are installed only on two types of engines: a robotic 6-six-speed gearbox with two clutches for a 1.5 dCi diesel engine and a CVT for a gasoline engine 2 , 0.

The convertible is produced at the French plant in the city of Douai, where the Scenic and Grand Scenic models are already being produced.

In 2012, a restyled Megane was presented, which received the official name "Collection 2012". The design changes are purely cosmetic. Where the coils are located and how to change them is probably known to every "meganovod" - this weakness was inherited from the machines of the first generation. Until 2006, only Sagem coils were installed on all gasoline Megans, which sometimes did not live up to 30-40 thousand kilometers. Then they began to put Beru or Denso reels on most of the machines - they last much longer.

If the engine does not want to start at all, the search for the culprit should start with the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors (30-40 euros). A more expensive source of trouble for the most common 1.6 engine (85% of cars on our market) and for a two-liter unit (6% of cars) is a variable valve timing system. Before the unit was modernized during restyling in 2006, the phase shifter in the gas distribution mechanism (500 euros) was meekly changed under warranty, which often became the first surprise for owners of very fresh cars with a mileage of only 20 thousand kilometers. At first, the mechanism quietly wedges, which complicates starting the motor in frost, and then loudly declares its fatigue (at first - only after a cold start) by "diesel" rattling - the sealing plates of the phase shifter rotor blades wear out and the retainer socket in the stator housing breaks.

Transmission problems? There are. Manual gearboxes - either six-speed gearboxes for two-liter cars, or "five-speed gearboxes" with less powerful motors - rarely fail by themselves. They can only be blamed for the lever stroke that was inaudible from birth and for oil seal leaks after 100 thousand kilometers (watch the oil level - otherwise the differential bearings will suffer). But jerks at the moment of closing the clutch discs often begin after some 10-15 thousand kilometers. The twitching is especially noticeable when the unit heats up in the heat or when driving in traffic jams - and it cannot be radically cured even by replacing the complete “basket” (250 euros).

But this is a saying. And a fairy tale - an adaptive "automatic" DP0 (cost 3500 euros), under the name AL4, bothered the owners of Peugeot and Citroen cars (AR No. 11 and 18, 2009). The unit, which debuted in 1999, has been improving all its life, but it has remained capricious. The box does not like to work in a cold state and is sensitive to the oil level (in the absence of a dipstick, it can only be checked on a lift). In the risk group, both oil seals and a torque converter (a bulkhead will cost 700-1000 euros), but most often - sometimes after 60-80 thousand kilometers - due to strong shocks during switching, you have to change the modulation valves or the entire valve body (200-450 euros ).

Weaknesses in the suspension are also known. Take at least the support bearings of the front struts (100 euros) - before the reinforcement of the structure in 2007, their warranty replacements due to tapping on irregularities happened even after 15-20 thousand kilometers. But when you hear a rattling in the steering column, do not rush to the service immediately - on every second car this is the norm: the steering shaft could reach the travel stop in new cars. The "rail" itself (600 euros) usually requires surgery with the replacement of a broken bushing no earlier than 70 thousand kilometers. As a rule, the steering tips hold the same amount, but the rods (40 euros each) have time to be updated a couple of times until then - that rare case when it makes sense to put on a more durable "non-original".

Silent blocks of McPherson front suspension levers could serve 120-150 thousand kilometers each, if they had not been consumed twice earlier together with levers (100 euros each) with worn-out non-removable ball bearings. Of course, non-original hinges can be bought separately, but how strong a lever with a bolted ball will be is an unanswered question.

Does the windshield fog up quickly and there is a lot of dirt under the hood? This means that the sound insulation of the motor shield has swollen and the seal has sagged. Bushings and anti-roll bar bushings are surprisingly durable, giving no reason to remember them up to 110-130 thousand kilometers - the same number are, for example, front shock absorbers (90 euros). Rear shock absorbers working at a large angle (50 euros) are harder - they often give out their fatigue not by leaks, but by knocks before 100 thousand kilometers, and pay attention to the silent blocks of the rear beam (70 euros) after 100-120 thousand kilometers: if they creak - then torn.

You probably already understand why the Renault Megane II is becoming so seductively available at an age. But if the soul nevertheless asks for it, we advise you to pay attention to cars after restyling in 2006 (the French call them cars of the second phase) - many "childhood diseases" have been cured, and reliability raises fewer complaints. How tempting are the prices? Four to five-year-old cars with a 1.4 engine are estimated at 300-400 thousand rubles, with a 1.6-liter engine - at 330-450 thousand rubles - for example, Chevrolet Lacetti (AP No. 14-15, 2010) or Peugeot 307 (AR # 11, 2009), and more reliable peers Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3 are more expensive. And the most interesting offer is, of course, the two-liter Meganas: they are more expensive than only by 10-20 thousand rubles. And, of course, it is better to prefer "mechanics" - although you will have to get used to the jerky nature of the clutch.

My previous car was also Renault Megane II, but in a poor configuration Authentique, with a 1.4 engine and "mechanics". For five years from unscheduled replacements - only the ignition coils under warranty. That Megane conquered me with the convenience of the interior and the comfort of the suspension, so I changed it to a hatchback - also five years old, with the same mileage of 80 thousand kilometers, but in the Dynamique configuration, with a 1.6 engine and automatic transmission. I knew about the weakness of the box, but on this car the valve block has already been replaced under warranty. But on the phase regulator of the engine, I "got" - a few months after the purchase, replacing it with a belt and pump cost 15 thousand rubles, and then by acquaintance. Soon, on this engine, it was necessary to change half of the ignition coils (no longer under warranty, at 1000 rubles apiece). Further - steeper: due to the closure of the wiring rotted in the rear door, the fuse box first flew, and then the starter burned out (a tow truck and repairs with used spare parts cost 17 thousand rubles). And all this happened in a year and 15 thousand kilometers. In general, my next car is unlikely to be a Megane.
