The better to lubricate the caliper. Lubricant for brake calipers. Special lubricants

Every motorist knows that a disc brake caliper in a modern car is a critical and complex unit made of high-tech materials. It is on this unit that not only traffic safety depends, but also the lives of people in the car, and not only.

Disc brakes always, and there are no exceptions to this, work in conditions that can be safely called extreme, since the temperature in a pair of friction pad - disc can reach 500-600 degrees. Do not discount the fact that parts are constantly exposed to salt and water coming from the roadway. By the way, the brake fluid from the brake system also negatively affects the operating condition. Anyone who has just sat behind the wheel of their first car believes that ordinary lubricant is enough for protection, but does not know that under such severe operating conditions, such lubricants coke, starting to adversely affect all plastic and elastomeric parts of the caliper, which, when started variant can lead to a complete failure of the braking system. Before deciding which brake caliper lubricant will be the most effective, let's find out what properties it should have.

High Temperature Caliper Guide Lubricant - Quality characteristics required for safe disc brake operation.

Calipers require special grease

  1. The lubricant must have an operating temperature of up to +1800 C and even higher. In other words, it must be high temperature.
  2. It is desirable that the caliper grease cannot melt and, accordingly, at high temperatures does not leak out of the brake system components.
  3. Insolubility of the lubricant. This means that it is resistant to brake fluid and water, that is, water and chemical resistant.
  4. Caliper grease must be compatible with elastomeric seals and plastic parts.

In fairness, it is worth noting that such a lubricant for the caliper guides is not produced by well-known manufacturers of lubricants and oils, and if such are present in the product range, then the manufacturers are specialized enterprises under the trademarks of famous brands.

Groups into which the special lubricants of the brake caliper guides are divided.

  1. High temperature extreme pressure pastes. Applications: brackets, anti-squeak plates and metal surfaces of brake pads. (Anti-Seize Compounds)
  2. Grease for other parts of the caliper. Applications: lip of pistons, pins, bolts, elastomer seals and bushings. Attention! Conventional silicone greases for plastics and rubber must not be used on these parts.
  3. Universal grease for brake calipers. Suitable for all moving parts, including elastomeric and plastic.

In turn, the first group has differences in the composition of fillers (additives) included in the paste:

  • Complex. Usually they come with the addition of copper powder, graphite and aluminum;
  • Copper (copper grease for calipers) - with graphite and copper powder;
  • Paste filled with molybdenum disulfide;
  • A paste with a non-metallic filler - magnesium silicate and ceramics.

Best Choice - Copper Caliper Grease

Unfortunately, the manufacturer of domestic lubricants is not able to fully satisfy car owners with the quality and variety of lubricants produced. Therefore, in most cases, they try to find and purchase imported material to lubricate the calipers. Let's focus on these special lubricants for the caliper.

First, it's worth noting that we are talking about possible substitutes, which is not a call to action at all. So, again, let's break it down into groups:

  1. This group of special pastes is represented on the market by the following materials of foreign production:
    • Complex pastes. Among them are the following: Wurth AL 1100. Loctite 8060/8150/8151 and HUSKEY 2000.
    • Copper pastes. Here the choice is much richer, we will give just a few as an example.
    • Loctite C5-A (8007/8008/8065)
    • HUSKEY341 Copper Anti-Seize
    • Marli Cooper Compound etc.
    • Paste with molybdenum disulfide.
    • One of the most famous is Loctite 8012/8154/8155, but there are others.
    • Metal-free pastes;
    • High temperature grease for liquid Moli calipers.
  2. In this group, there are only two types of greases on the market that are produced in Germany. It:
    • ATE plastilube;
    • Loctite Teroson Plastilube.
  3. Group 3 includes:
    • SLIPKOTE 927 Disc Brake Caliper Grease;
    • Molykote AS-880N Grease;
    • SLIPKOTE 220-R Silicone Disc Brake Caliper Grease and Noise Suppressor;
    • Permatex Ultra Disk Brake Caliper Lube;
    • Multipurpose grease for calipers ms 1600.

All lubricants on the Russian market come from the USA.

Special high-temperature lubricants for brake calipers - long life for both the car and its owner.

It is important to apply a good quality lubricant to the slideways.

You can talk about the advantages of a particular category of lubricants almost indefinitely, but what do the caliper manufacturers themselves say about this? The world's oldest manufacturers of not only motorcycle, but also automobile brake systems opt for high-temperature silicone lubricants. From all of the above, one conclusion can be drawn: the average car enthusiast stops his choice on the third group. It's simple: special and universal lubricants can be used to treat all parts of the disc brake caliper. Despite the fact that this type of material is much more expensive than the Russian counterpart (if it is at all possible to find it on the Russian market), it reliably protects, preventing such a serious breakdown as the failure of the brake system. There is only one thing left - to make the right choice and safe driving will be ensured.

Brake calipers are an important structural element in the machine, which ensures safe movement. It is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of this unit and carry out its quality maintenance. To do this, it is important to know what kind of lubricant to use for the guide calipers.

[Hide]

Operating conditions of calipers

Disc brake calipers function under difficult conditions of use. They are exposed to critically high temperatures reaching 600 degrees. Especially in situations of sudden braking or when moving along mountain serpentines.

As a result of further heat removal and cooling of the elements, the temperature can be reduced to 180 degrees. Brake calipers (ST) work under conditions of exposure to water, pollution, and reagents that road services sprinkle roads in the cold season. If the piston O-rings wear out during vehicle operation, the brake fluid can also get into the caliper lubrication system. In order to prevent a malfunction in the functioning of the unit, it is necessary to use special lubricants.

Grease the guide carriages

Requirements for lubrication

The following is a list of lubrication requirements for brake calipers:

  1. The lubricant used for CT and other mechanisms should not aggressively attack plastic and rubber elements, as well as elastomers. This can lead to their destruction.
  2. If you decide to lubricate the calipers with a new agent, then you need to be sure that it is resistant to water, brake fluid and other aggressive compounds. If they come into contact with the lubricant, it may dissolve and be flushed out of the system.
  3. The tool must be resistant to work in high temperatures - from 180 degrees or more. If the lubricant does not have this property, during operation it will melt and come out of the units.
  4. A quality substance can work without problems at critically low temperatures. It is desirable that the product does not lose its properties in frost down to -50 degrees and is able to retain its original characteristics in such cold weather.

Lubricants such as Litol, Nigrol or graphite paste are not suitable for processing parts, since they cannot withstand the aggressive conditions in which the calipers function. These products quickly dissolve and coke, which negatively affects the work of the anthers. As a result, the use of lubricants that are not intended for the calipers can lead to seizure of the cylinder pistons and rails. This is fraught with brake failure.

The Garage TV channel provided a video in which it is described in detail how the elements of the brake system are lubricated.

Types of lubricants

Now let's look at the types of heat-resistant, high-temperature and silicone lubricants.

Synthetic or mineral pastes with added metals

Such substances are included in the group of heat-resistant extreme pressure agents. Aluminum greases operate over a wide temperature range, which, depending on the manufacturer, can vary from -185 to +1000 degrees. The basis of the product is a mineral or synthetic base. Manufacturers add thickeners to the composition, as well as particles of molybdenum or copper.

The group of synthetic or mineral agents includes the following subspecies:

  • complex, which are based on copper, graphite and aluminum, as well as thickening substances;
  • copper, consisting of graphite and copper powder;
  • ceramic products without metal, they use ceramics, as well as magnesium silicate;
  • lubricants developed on the basis of molybdenum disulfide or copper.

Mineral Oil Pastes

Many car owners choose refractory products based on mineral oil. The basis of the substances is bentonite, which is used as a thickener. Manufacturers add fatty acids and metal particles to the composition. The main advantage of such funds is the possibility of stable operation at temperatures from -45 to +180 degrees. Their use is permitted in machines that are operated under gentle conditions.

User Vyacheslav Ivanov in his video conducted an experiment on the use of two popular types of lubricants for brake systems.

Synthetic oil based pastes

This type of slideway grease is considered the most common and versatile. It can be used not only for ST, but also for other components of the vehicle's braking system. When developing a lubricant, a purified synthetic base and a complex of additives are used. Thanks to the additives, the substances become resistant to oxidation, corrosion and provide antiwear properties to parts. The composition also contains thickening substances.

Synthetic-based lubricants are characterized by positive properties.

They do not dissolve in brake fluid or water, as well as in acidic and alkaline formulations. Greases do not evaporate and have dielectric characteristics. A synthetic-based tool for the treatment of guide calipers is capable of successfully performing its functions in the temperature range from -40 to +300 degrees. Car owners can use these substances for rolling devices, sliding devices and other elements that function in conditions of high temperatures and high pressures.

The user John KroN in his video demonstrated how the procedure for processing the guide calipers is carried out using the example of a Toyota Corolla car.

Overview of slide and slide lubricants

Consider a list of lubricants based on silicone and other elements that are considered the best by consumer reviews.

So, what kind of lubricant to use for the guide calipers:

Molykote CU-7439

Molikot is manufactured in the USA on the basis of copper powder and a semi-synthetic base. Many car owners choose this particular lubricant to process the caliper guides. It effectively performs its functions at temperatures from -30 ° C to + 600 ° C, is resistant to work under high pressure conditions. Also, this product is not washed off under the influence of moisture and does not dissolve, it is characterized by low volatility.

Practice has shown that Molikot effectively protects parts of the brake system from rust, sticking and souring. This tool has received approval for use from the manufacturers Nissan, Subaru, Honda and Land Rover.

MS-1600

Russian-made product. The grease belongs to the category of high-temperature and universal. The product works effectively in the range from -50 ° C to + 1000 ° C. In practice, this grease functions well under conditions of the negative impact of aggressive reagents, acidic and alkaline compounds, as well as liquids. With regular use, the agent does not destroy rubber seals and plastic elements of the car's brake system.

Non-stick characteristics are considered one of the main features, and the grease is also resistant to corrosion. The manufacturer recommends using this substance on the side parts of brake pads, non-working surfaces, as well as pistons and rails. The grease does not interact with brake fluids of the DOT 3 group, but its use is not allowed if the car is filled with "brake" of the DOT 5 class.

XADO VeryLube as a spray

This tool is considered a more budget option. Its use prevents the pads from jamming. Supplied to the market as a green aerosol. The substance perfectly copes with its duties at temperatures from -35 ° C to + 400 ° C. According to the manufacturer, the product has no negative effect on rubber seals and parts. To use the lubricant, you need to apply five coats, while waiting for each one to dry.

Slipkote

In addition to its main purpose, this product can be used in drinking water supply systems. Reviews of car owners confirm the high quality of the lubricant, but it is not so easy to find it on our market. It performs its functions efficiently, operating in temperatures ranging from -46 ° C to + 299 ° C. It is made on the basis of synthetic liquid, thickening substances and special additives. Thanks to additives, the substance is resistant to rust and oxidation.

This tool has high anti-wear characteristics, which makes it possible to increase the service life of the calipers. The lubricant is initially used by many automotive manufacturers, and it is sold to the market by the brands Toyota, Permatex, Loktait, Penzoil, etc. Despite many advantages, this tool has one drawback - high cost. The use of grease is not permitted on machines equipped with drum brakes.

Liqui moly

Some car owners believe that there is no better lubricant. But judging by the reviews and results of technical tests, the product cannot be classified as high-quality, it has many disadvantages. According to official data, the grease is heat-resistant, its use is allowed at temperatures from -40 ° C to + 1200 ° C. Despite the fact that initially the agent was positioned as a substance for the treatment of calipers, later its status was changed to anti-squeak lubricant. This is due to the fact that in the process of operation, many buyers have experienced all the shortcomings and inefficiency of work.

The official website of the manufacturer indicates that it is not advisable to use Liquid Moli for guide calipers. But in many stores this substance is positioned precisely as a means for ST.

Brembo

A lubricant that, thanks to anti-wear and anti-corrosion additives, effectively treats and protects the calipers from the negative effects of brake fluid and water. Its use allows you to save parts from rapid wear and seizure. Brembo products are supplied to Porsche, Mercedes, Nissan, Chrysler, Audi, Fiat, etc.

Permatex Ultra

Designed for processing brake system elements operating in harsh and aggressive conditions. The product can be used to lubricate bushings, plungers, couplings and pins. Laboratory studies have shown that the substance effectively protects the calipers from the effects of water, corrosion and can perform its functions both in wet and dry conditions. The operating temperature range is -40 ° C to + 204.4 ° C. It is allowed to use the substance in internal and external mechanisms made of rubber or plastic.

The grease does not adversely affect EPDM rubber parts. The use allows you to prevent the creak of disc brakes, jamming of pins and bushings, as well as the formation of new sounds in the operation of the brake system. According to official data, this tool is superior in its technical characteristics to other lubricants. The lubricant is not based on petroleum products, as well as silicone. The product is safe for the environment.

TRW

The lubricant is specially developed for the treatment of the guide calipers of the auto brake system. Its use is relevant in all mechanical assemblies, hydraulic devices operating with liquids of the DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 classes. Does not have a negative effect on rubber, perfectly protects system elements from rapid wear. It is allowed to use for processing sliding and linear bearing devices located in couplings, as well as bushings and spokes.

The liquid is characterized by excellent resistance to high loads and moisture, increased adhesion and protection against rust. The tool is fully compatible with the materials from which the anthers and guide cuffs are made. The basis of the substance is a synthetic oil and a thickening substance Li-complex. It is not allowed to use the agent for processing aluminum parts and elements functioning under conditions of increased loads. Do not use the substance in the brake lining supports and for lubricating sliding surfaces.

What and where to lubricate

Points to consider when using a lubricant:

  1. If there is a creak and other third-party sounds during braking, the anti-squeak plates must be treated with the agent. It should be noted that the parts must be lubricated on both sides. The part that is installed to the piston of the working cylinder does not need to be processed.
  2. To simplify the procedure for moving the piston, its surface is treated with a lubricant. In this case, it is important not to overdo it, since the excess part of the substance will eventually begin to squeeze out of the anthers.
  3. When operating a car, it is necessary to regularly process the springs that are used to press the pads. It will be useful to lubricate the surfaces of the latter. Lubrication of the friction layer, which is considered to be working, is not allowed.
  4. With the brake guide lubricant, it is necessary to process the so-called pins, that is, the calipers themselves. The amount of the substance must be sufficient. But if there is a lot of lubricant, then it can get on the working surface of the pads, which should not be allowed.

The cost of lubricants

The price of a product depends on its quality, tube volume and manufacturer. The average cost of lubricants for car slide rails varies in the region of 60-200 rubles. The cost of more expensive funds can be up to 1000 rubles.

An eerie creak and squeal is often heard during braking. This reminds you to lubricate the caliper mechanisms. If this is not done, they will jam and you will lose control of the machine. And this can provoke an emergency or an accident. The caliper is mounted on a bracket and holds the working cylinders that are involved in the braking process. For the brake to work perfectly, the caliper lubricant is required.

Requirements for caliper lubricants

During driving and when braking, the entire braking system becomes very hot. In order for all the components of the brake system to work properly, you need high-quality lubrication of the brake caliper guides.

Any lubrication of the guide calipers must meet the requirements:

The lubricant must be non-aggressive to rubber, plastic, elastomer (seals to the caliper are made from it).

Must be water resistant, brake fluid. The grease must not be washed out by water or chemicals.

Must be able to withstand temperatures greater than 180 ° C (these are high temperature greases that do not melt or flow).

The grease must be able to withstand low temperatures (–35 ° C and below).

The lubricant must withstand extreme loads (this depends on the nature of driving a car).

The lubricant must be universal (suitable for all parts of the caliper). Such a lubricant can be MS-1600.

High Temperature Extreme Pressure Pastes

High temperature anti-seize compounds are recommended for use on calipers, hold-down springs, back metal surfaces of brake pads and anti-squeak plates.

Anti-seize pastes can withstand temperatures up to 1400 ° C, since they contain base oils, synthetic thickeners and micropowders: homogenized submicron particles of solid lubricants and / or particles of certain metals (molybdenum, copper, graphite, aluminum). The mass fraction of metals is 25–30%. High Temperature Caliper Grease may contain different fillers:

Molybdenum disulfide.

A mixture of powder of aluminum, copper and graphite.

Non-metallic fillers.

Copper / graphite.

Types of lubricants

There are three types of lubricants:

Mineral oil based grease.

Synthetic oil based grease.

Pastes with the addition of metals.

The characteristics of each type of grease are suggested below. After reading the information, you can decide for yourself which caliper lubricant is best.

Mineral oil based grease

Mineral oil based grease is a synthetic brake grease (paste form) containing a bentonite thickener containing fatty acids and metal particles. There is no dropping point in such greases: it can withstand an operating mode of –45 ° C to + 180 ° C. This is used to lubricate the brake caliper guides.

Synthetic oil based grease

A synthetic oil based grease is used to lubricate all moving parts of the caliper. Such a lubricant is non-aggressive to the caliper elements made of plastic, rubber, elastomers. The composition of such a paste contains a stable thickener and additives that prevent rapid wear of parts, oxidation and corrosion. Synthetic oil based grease has low volatility. It is waterproof and does not dissolve in chemical substances (brake fluid, alkalis and other corrosive fluids).

Pastes with the addition of metals

What kind of lubricant should I use for the slideways? Having asked this question, you should pay attention to pastes with the addition of metals. Copper grease Is a substance that creates a layer in the moving elements of the brake system. The lubricant protects parts from friction during operation and from overheating during braking. Thanks to copper lubrication, there is no brake interruption at high speeds. Copper grease meets all the requirements for caliper lubricants:

protects parts from moisture, corrosion, carbon deposits;

Neutralizes the action of acids, alkalis, salts;

Does not evaporate;

Long service life (frequent replacement is not required).

Pay attention! Graphite lubricants should not be used because they burn out strongly and often flow.

Types of copper grease:

Lubricant paste. Copper Grease Paste is used in automobiles to lubricate loose parts.

Spray / aerosol lubricant. It is used for the lubrication of threaded connections and for parts that work under pressure.

Aluminum grease- used to lubricate parts that operate at high temperatures. The lubricant prevents the sticking of parts (after a long service life, the elements of mechanisms lubricated with such a lubricant can be easily removed), vibrations of parts of the brake system. The grease with the addition of aluminum is water-resistant, withstands temperature extremes, and has anti-seize properties.

Caliper Cleaning (Lubrication) Procedure

Caliper grease must be applied every time the pads are changed. The procedure is performed step by step:

1. Check the dust cover. If the cap is damaged, replace it.

2. Clean all elements of the brake system from dirt and rust.

3. Apply grease to the caliper guides. Attention! Make sure that the dust cuff does not come into contact with the paste (otherwise it will swell over time).

4. Close the caliper (to do this, move the brake cylinder inward).

5. Bleed the brakes.

The braking system is a complex and very important vehicle mechanism in terms of functionality. Its refusal or malfunctioning can cost the car owner a lot, sometimes even his life, therefore, monitoring the correct performance of the brakes is the main task of any motorist. In this article, we will talk about the need to lubricate the calipers and rails, which are an important part of the braking system. Uncharacteristic loud noises heard from the wheels during braking may indicate the need to lubricate the calipers. These sounds signal that the stopping mechanism works without, at any moment it can jam, and, accordingly, cause an accident with consequences of varying complexity. Let's try to figure out how to lubricate a complex structure, which lubricant for guide calipers is more suitable for difficult situations.

Classification of types of lubricants

The question, the better to lubricate the caliper guides, is relevant only for beginners, but also for experienced drivers. There is a huge range of lubricants on the modern market, which differ in composition, inherent criteria, price and manufacturer. Responsible drivers realize that the "braking system" does not imply savings, since life can depend on it, and more than one, and therefore they ask themselves how to choose the right lubricant. To choose a lubricant good for brake calipers, you first need to study in detail the types of goods available for sale, taking into account their technical characteristics, and only then give preference to one of the product categories.

When choosing a lubricant, the following criteria should be taken into account:

  • resistance to water and aggressive chemical components; maintaining high-temperature conditions with a starting count of one hundred and eighty degrees and above;
  • stability of technical characteristics at extreme subzero temperatures, which is important;
  • absence in the composition of components that can destructively affect rubber and plastic components and seals.

The entire range of lubricant products is conditionally divided into three categories: emulsions of a synthetic or mineral series with the inclusion of metal-containing components in the structure, products based on oils of mineral origin and synthetic substances. Consider the top products in this segment.

Top lubricants

  • Price.
  • Safe for the environment.
  • Ease of use.

Molykote CU-7439 does its job perfectly. Withstands a wide range of temperatures - from 30 frost to 600 heat. Thanks to its copper powder and semi-synthetic base, it is resistant to high pressure. Another advantage is the long service life.

MS-1600 is manufactured in Russia. The grease is universal and high temperature. In addition to guides, it can be used on non-working surfaces of brake pads. The temperature threshold reaches 1000 degrees Celsius. Effective when interacting with aggressive media, corrosion resistant.

Xado's VeryLube spray resists blocking of the pads. Convenient to use - it is difficult to overdose. Unlike the main competitors, it is tolerant to rubber elements. For a reliable result, 5 coats are required at intervals to dry. You won't have to wait long.

Slipkote is resistant to rust and corrosion. But from the entire list of funds, this substance has an extremely low upper temperature threshold - 299 degrees Celsius. Otherwise, he copes with his tasks. Lubrication is quite expensive, but it is incompatible with.

For a long time, posters advertising the Liqui Molly brand were shown on all billboards, and videos were played by all TV channels. Now you can only see it in the broadcasts of Formula 1. But until now, motorists trust this brand with their own braking systems. Initially, it was positioned as a medicine for calipers and guides, but recently the situation has changed. The grease is recommended to be used as anti-squeak for pads. But even now, mechanics smear calipers with this high-temperature grease and few people complain.

If you have a car of one of the German brands, TM Brembo products will come to the rescue. This is a reliable Italian grease that is used by car manufacturers directly during assembly. The wear resistance is significantly increased, and the main components are less exposed to water and.

The upper limit of lubrication for Permatex calipers is much lower than the average - only 204 degrees, but motorists appreciate it. The main advantage is the protection of calipers, guides and internal mechanisms from moisture. Recommended for impregnating plastic and rubber brake structures. Eliminates squeaking and jamming of all types of brakes.

TRW grease works where MC-1600 and Molykote will not help. This product is suitable for DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 fluid braking systems. It is allowed to use rubber for the lubrication of moving parts of brakes. The composition is resistant to high loads, but contact with aluminum parts at increased loads is contraindicated.

Secrets of Correct Use

  1. If during braking there are extraneous sounds or creaking, the anti-squeak plates on both sides are subject to lubrication. Only the elements adjacent to the working cylinder piston must not be machined.
  2. The surface of the piston is treated with the compound if movement problems arise. It is important not to overdo it, otherwise the excess substance will jump out of the anthers over time. Of the above formulations, TRW, which is anther tolerant, is suitable for this operation.
  3. As soon as possible after any replacement or maintenance of the brakes, the replaced parts should be treated with an appropriate product as recommended by the brand.
  4. From time to time during the operation of the vehicle, it is necessary to lubricate the entire surface. But the working friction layer must not be touched.
  5. When lubricating the calipers, be careful with the dosage of the agent. If you overdo it with it, then the excess will be squeezed out onto the work surface. Most formulations are not designed for this. You can count the exceptions on your fingers.

conclusions

Caliper and Slide Lubricant makes it easier to use brake parts as they work in tough conditions. There are several types of lubricants. We will try to systematize the information and answer a number of questions of interest to car owners.

Types of lubricants

In particular, we will deal with the following topics:

Types of lubricants

It should be pointed out right away that manufacturers divide the lubricant into two types - paste and spray. Before proceeding to the listing of their types and brands, it is necessary to determine what characteristics the caliper lubricant should have. With an aggressive driving style or driving on mountain serpentines, the caliper temperature can reach + 300 ° С, and in urban conditions it can warm up to + 150 ° С ... 200 ° С. In addition, the caliper is affected by moisture, dirt, and reagents that are sprinkled on the roads. Therefore, the lubricant for the calipers and its guides must be:

  • non-aggressive towards rubber and plastic parts of the machine;
  • not to lose their properties when exposed to water, brake fluid or other substances that can wash or dissolve it;
  • , that is, not to lose their temperature properties at + 180 ° C or more;
  • should not lose its physical properties during significant frosts (from -35 ° C and below).

Commonly used cheap lubricants do not provide the described conditions. We are talking about graphite paste, lithol, nigrol and their other analogues. That is, for the normal operation of the brake system, and in particular the caliper, it is necessary to use modern developments.

Currently, manufacturers produce the following groups of lubricants for calipers:

First group - mineral or synthetic pastes using metals. They are of the type high temperature extreme pressure... Their working range is very wide, and is approximately -185 ° С ... + 1100 ° С(each grease has its own operating range).

The substance is based on synthetic or mineral oil, which contains thickeners, as well as metal particles (copper or molybdenum). This includes the following subtypes:

  • complex pastes, which include powder of copper, aluminum and graphite;
  • copper, containing copper and graphite powder;
  • pastes without metal particles, instead of which magnesium silicate and ceramics are used;
  • greases based on copper or molybdenum disulfide.

Examples of specific brands of this type of grease:

  • complex pastes- HUSKEY 2000 Lubricating Paste and Anti-Seize Compound for High Temperature, Loctite No. 8060/8150/8151, Wurth AL 1100;
  • copper paste- HUSKEY 341 Copper Anti-Seize, LIQUI MOLY Kupfer-Paste, Mannol Kupfer-Paste Super-Hafteffekt, Marly Cooper Compound, Molykote Cu-7439 Plus Paste, Motip Koperspray, Permatex Copper Anti-Seize Lubricant, Pingo Kupfer-Coopte-Cooper Spray, Wurth SU 800;
  • metal-free pastes- HUSKEY 400 Anti-Seize, TEXTAR Cera Tec, LIQUI MOLY Bremsen-Anti-Quietsch-Paste;
  • molybdenum disulfide pastes- HUSKEY Moly Paste, Assembly Lubricant & Anti-Seize Compound, Loctite # 8012/8154/8155.

Pastes belonging to this group can be applied to the GUIDE Pins of the brake calipers and any highly loaded friction surfaces, except for the working surfaces of the brake pads!

Second group - Mineral Oil Pastes... They contain bentonite, which acts as a thickener. In addition, metal particles and fatty acids have been added here. The main advantage of a mineral based grease is sustainable work in the temperature range from -45 ° С ... + 180 ° С... That is, the paste does not flow out and does not lose its properties. Thus, it is excellent for lubricating the caliper slideways in vehicles operated under gentle conditions. An example of this type of grease is Teroson VR500.

Third group - synthetic oil based greases... This is the most universal formulations, since they are suitable not only for the lubrication of calipers, but also for other elements of the vehicle's braking system. Lubricants are made from refined synthetic oil, as well as additives with anti-corrosion, antioxidant and antiwear properties. Also included is a thickener. Synthetic oil based lubricants have excellent characteristics... They do not dissolve in water, brake fluid, alkalis and acids, do not evaporate, and also have dielectric properties. The operating temperature range is approximately -40 ° to + 300 ° С.

Examples of lubricants are Molykote AS-880N Grease, Permatex Ultra Disk Brake Caliper Lube, SLIPKOTE 220-R Silicone Disc Brake Caliper Grease and Noise Suppressor, SLIPKOTE 927 Disc Brake Caliper Grease.

The area of their use is wide. They are used for the lubrication of plain and rolling bearings, as well as other parts operating under high temperature and high pressure conditions.

One of the most popular pastes and sprays for calipers and slideways are copper greases, which are a type of grease that uses metal. Let's dwell on it briefly.

Copper grease (high temperature)

She, like other caliper lubricants, belongs to the type of high-temperature... That is, they are able to withstand significant thermal overloads during the operation of the braking system.

Copper greases are composed of three main substances - crushed fine copper, oil (mineral and synthetic), and some substances that are designed to resist corrosion. Lubricants are sold in the form of a paste or spray. They have a high viscosity, therefore, penetrating into the gaps, they do not flow out.

Benefits of Copper Lubricants consists in wide operating temperature range, reduction of friction forces, no evaporation and dew point. If you decide to use copper grease, you must adhere to the conditions for its application. First, the work surface of the part must be thoroughly cleaned. Secondly, you need to apply the lubricant carefully so that debris does not get onto the part with it. Third, excess grease does not need to be removed.

If your car's caliper is made of aluminum, then copper grease cannot be used, because contact corrosion of aluminum will occur (since these two metals are not “friendly” with each other)

Overview of slide and slide lubricants

Review of Molykote Cu-7439 Plus grease

MS-1600 Russian production. Among domestic products, it is worth highlighting the now popular grease from a number of universal high-temperature pastes. Its working range is -50 ° С ... + 1000 ° С... Like its counterparts, the grease is resistant to the effects of various reagents, acids, alkalis, and water. In addition, it does not have a detrimental effect on rubber and plastic parts of the braking system of a car, it has anti-corrosion and non-stick properties. According to the manufacturer's instructions, this white paste suitable for lubrication non-working and end surfaces of the pads, guides and processing caliper piston.

MC-1600 does not interact with brake fluids of DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1 classes. The price of a tube of MC1600 grease weighing 100 grams is about $ 6-8, but it is convenient that you can buy only a 5 gram sticker, which is enough to replace one set of pads, for only 60-80 rubles.

Please note that MC-1600 cannot be used simultaneously with DOT 5.0 class brake fluid.

XADO VeryLube... A more budget-friendly option for caliper grease. It is used to prevent jamming and sticking of brake pads on the caliper guides. Sold in the form of a spray (green), in a 320 ml can. Working temperature is -35 ° С ... + 400 ° С. Neutral to rubber materials... During operation, it is necessary to apply up to 5 layers of grease, while allowing each of them to dry. An excellent option for those who do not want to overpay and get a quality product, although the expense is slightly more than usual. The price of a can of grease is $ 3 ... 4. The order number for Hado VeriLube lithium universal spray grease is XB40019.

SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC

SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC(Silicone Disc Brake Caliper Grease and Noise Suppressor). It is also an excellent lubricant for calipers, and, interestingly, it is also approved for use in drinking water supply systems. According to the reviews of many motorists, this is one of the best pastes for lubricating guides. However, for many, the difficulty lies in buying it. The optimal solution is an order from abroad. Temperature operating range - -46 to + 299 ° С... It is made on the basis of refined synthetic oil, a thickener and additives that give it anti-corrosion, antioxidant and anti-wear properties.

The manufacturer supplies lubricants under the SLIPKOTE trademark to automotive factories. Retail products are sold by Pennzoil, Loctite, Permatex, TRW Autospecialty, Toyota. According to the catalog, for ordering, it goes as HUSKEY 72983 or, if Toyota's, then 0888780609. With all the advantages of a lubricant, it has the only drawback - a high price. One tube weighing 85 grams will cost you approximately $ 20.

Note! SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC must not be used on vehicles with drum brakes; in this case, for example, the Huskey 2000 Anti-Seize can be used.

LIQUI MOLY Bremsen-Anti-Quietsch-Paste

LIQUI MOLY Bremsen-Anti-Quietsch-Paste given grease DO NOT RECOMMEND you enjoy. Despite the manufacturer's declared temperature characteristics - -40 ° C ... + 1200 ° C, it has a number of disadvantages. The fact is that initially it was really positioned as a lubricant for the caliper guides. However, after a while, consumers began to experience problems caused by its operation. And the manufacturer decided to downgrade its status to anti-squeak... Even on the official website there is information that “It is not recommended to use caliper guide pins and bookmarks in anthers for lubrication”. However, nowadays, many online stores and unscrupulous sellers, unknowingly or on purpose, continue to sell it as a caliper lubricant. But this does not mean that there is no good lubricant for the calipers in Liquid Moli, other models have proven themselves quite well.

What is the best caliper lubricant?

Let's summarize what kind of caliper lubricant is best to use. When choosing, it is necessary to be guided by the following considerations: the operating conditions of the car, the intensity of the wear of the brake system, the brand of the car, the price of lubricant.

If you are the owner of an average passenger car and follow a moderate driving style, then there is no point in overpaying and buying expensive lubricants. For example, buy the now popular Russian brand MS-1600 or XADO Very Lube caliper grease.

Temperature test of caliper lubricants

If you own an expensive car, or subject the braking system to significant loads (racing, driving in the mountains), then it makes sense to buy a more expensive lubricant. For example, Slipkote® 220-R DBC or Molykote Cu-7439 Plus. They work over a wide temperature range and reliably protect the caliper and the braking system as a whole. Therefore, the price is often the decisive factor in the choice. We hope that the reviews below on some brands of lubricants will help you make the right choice.

Caliper lubrication reviews

After collecting tips and real experience of using popular lubricants by car owners, we provide reviews, based on which you can evaluate all the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

Slipkote 220-R DBC

Molykote Cu-7439 Plus

XADO Very Lube

Positive Negative
A good thing. The only drawback is that you need to apply several layers to the caliper guide.I really didn't like her. After application, after a while it becomes very thick, after a couple of months it begins to coke, and the movement of the caliper becomes difficult
For the guides and caliper cylinders under the boot exactly that. Only apply in layers with a time interval of 2-3 minutes 2-3 timesFull grease "G", money down the drain
I have been using XADO grease, without exaggeration, for about 150 thousand, probably ... no problem ...For guides, it is categorically not suitable
Someone writes that VeriLub is "shit", but I'm happy. I started to lubricate it after 10 thousand run, now it's already 60, everything is normal. I have been using the VeryLube balloon for 3 seasons (~ 6 replacements) and there is still an ogogo ("Logan" car)

MC1600

Positive Negative
Normal lubrication feel. I liked that the squeak disappears immediately.The declared characteristics are in doubt, the lack of international approvals.
I tried the MS-1600 inexpensive and satisfied with the quality. After replacing the pads again and using this lubricant on the rails, the pads finally began to grind evenly.It is very thick. I stuffed 1600 ms in the guides. In winter, uneven wear of the pads went - the inner one was worn off more than the outer one. The grease dried out in a year and literally turned into dark gray plasticine. And under the boot of the piston it dried completely. I would not recommend using it as an anti-creak one either, I found in the reviews more than once that people complain about the return of squeaks. It is better to have several good proven specialty lubricants for a particular assembly than to have one universal lubricant.
