The outer diameter of the tire is 175 70 r13. Tire marking. The main mistakes motorists make when choosing rims

When choosing new wheels for a car, the question often arises, should I put more or less wheels, or in order to improve the appearance of the car or reduce the cost of buying tires and wheels. But the most important question arises, will the wheels fit my car and how will its characteristics change. You can understand whether the wheels will fit on the gas tank cap or the side stand of the car (photo 1). Or find your car in our directory of applicability of discs to cars, and see the tires recommended by the factory. But it often happens that you can put other tires that are not officially approved by the factory.

In this case, the main thing is to understand how the speedometer will change, i.e. the speed of the machine, as the outer radius of the wheel will change. The clearance (ground clearance) will also change. It is not recommended to go beyond the values of factory tires by more than 2-3%. The handling and behavior of the car, the consumption of gasoline and the actual speed of the car may change.

Tire calculator - size comparison

Our tire calculator will show you visual differences in tire diameter, profile, radius, ground clearance and width. Dashed lines show the difference in size. At the top, you can see a visual representation of the old tire (original size), and at the bottom, a visualization of the new tire. Just as you noticed, the tire can be seen in lateral and frontal projection. You can copy the URL of the page and show it to other people and they will see the same comparison as you see.

But how to understand all these values and the difference in%? To do this, we created a tire calculator, it will help you understand the change in all the necessary characteristics and show the difference in% between the old and new tires, and even visually display how the wheel of the old and new sizes will look like. You just need to enter the tire width, profile and wheel radius. Usually they are displayed in this form - 195 \ 65 R15 (photo 2).

How to use the online tire calculator?

Using our online tire calculator is very easy. In the upper left corner of the site, there are fields for choosing a tire size. In the top row, you need to indicate the size of your original factory tire (or the tires that are currently installed on your car). These values are written on the tire profile (side surface). In the first list, you need to select the tire width - it is indicated in millimeters. The second list is the percentage of profile height to tire width. The third list is the disc diameter in inches (commonly referred to as the radius).

In the bottom row you need to specify the size of the new tires. Tires that you are going to install on a car or have already bought. Then click "Calculate". Our tire calculator will calculate the differences between the old and new tires and display them in a table and a picture. Namely: diameter, width, circumference, tire profile height, number of revolutions per kilometer and change in car clearance. The first columns of the table will show the parameters for old and new tyres, the following columns will show the difference in mm and the percentage difference between them.

There is a speedometer at the bottom of the tire calculator to visually compare the speed of the old and new tires. Under the speedometer, you can speed up and slow down and see the change in speed difference between the old and new tires.

Be careful!

Be careful on the road and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. The reverse side of installing non-standard tire sizes is the risk of losing insurance in case of an accident, not passing the state technical inspection of the car, since the installation of tires that are not approved by the factory is considered a change in the design of the vehicle.

In order to choose the right tires for the disks, you need to know certain parameters, the non-observance of which will seriously worsen the behavior of the car on the road. Since the tire is put on the rim of the disc, the width of the profile must be commensurate with it. We note right away that, despite the tuning common in recent years, automakers categorically do not recommend this. After all, if the sizes of disks and tires vary greatly, then the contact patch will not be even, which means that the control can get out of control.

In general, the question of matching tires and wheels can be considered from two sides. The first is the selection of tires and wheels based on the manufacturer's recommendations, and the second is this fitment. Fitment is the study of the fit of a tire on a rim and the position of the wheels relative to the wheel arches, which includes negative camber, low landing and other delights, which we will not talk about, since we consider it more important to tell you how to choose the right one from the point of view of safety and comfort tires to wheels.

To choose the right tires for the rims, you need to know the labeling of the rims.

Ideally, that is, to be sure of safety, the PCD of the disk (the diameter of the circle of the centers of the mounting holes) cannot be changed. In extreme cases, the sizes of wheels and tires may not match each other quite a bit, but then eccentric bolts are used for fastening, which allow you to install wheels with PCD 100 mm on cars with PCD 98 mm. However, it is worth noting that the maximum difference in displacement should not exceed 2 mm, and ideally, the tires and rims should still match one hundred percent.

The dimensions of the disks and tires must also match with their central hole, but if for some reason this is not possible, the adjusting ring will come to the rescue (it is also the spacer ring). The adjusting ring has an outer diameter equal to the diameter of the hole in the disk, and the inner diameter corresponds to the diameter of the vehicle hub. If the adjusting ring is set correctly, then the running characteristics will not change. It should be noted that the discs do not have stamped mounting rings. Install them only on .

The labeling of the disks does not indicate the maximum load ( MAX LOAD), you can find out this parameter either in the passport, which some manufacturers of domestic wheels attach to their products, or look for this information on the website of the wheel manufacturer. This information is not very important, since manufacturers usually make discs with a margin of safety. But, if for some reason you decide to put, say, rims for a passenger car on a jeep, then the maximum disk load will be an important parameter. And if it is not taken into account, the wheel may not withstand the load and deform, even falling into a small hole.

In addition, even if the dimensions of the tires and rims match in all respects, there is still a risk that the rim will not fit on the car. The reason for this is the so-called X-factor, when the disc rests on the suspension parts or caliper, which is associated with the shape of the stamping or casting. Therefore, we recommend that you first try it on before beading the tire on the wheel.

The ratio of the width of the wheel and the width of the rubber affects the stability of the car. To ensure safe and comfortable driving, it is necessary that the ratio of these parameters be within the optimal limits - recommended by the manufacturer, otherwise the grip of the tire with the disk and the roadway worsens, the risk of an accident increases.

Theoretical part

assembled wheel

The vehicle owner's manual indicates the dimensions of the tires and rims. But many motorists try to install larger wheels on the car, as they believe that such actions will increase the stability of the vehicle. This opinion is not entirely correct. If you slightly increase the rim of the product, you can get the following benefits:

 • increase in speed;
 • improved manageability;
 • increase the stability of the machine.

If the disk is enlarged more than the permissible norm, negative consequences are possible:

 • grip deterioration - the wheel will touch the fender of the car;
 • increased load on the transmission;
 • reduction in vehicle control.

If you want to install, for example, low-profile tires to make driving easier, keep in mind that such actions can lead to negative consequences:

 • an increase in the risk of disc damage when driving on uneven road surfaces (pits, ledges, and so on);
 • an increase in the load on the suspension of the car while driving through pits and other irregularities.

The ideal option is the selection of products, taking into account the compatibility of tires and wheels in size. It can be achieved by:

 • recommendations of the car dealer - the correspondence between the width of the disc and the rubber is indicated in the car manual;
 • data of special tables for the selection of wheels and tires by size.

It is possible to choose the size of rubber for the size of the disk and vice versa, using special tables, taking into account the width of the rim of the disk, it should be 25-30% less than the width of the rubber profile. For example, for 175 / 80R14 rubber, the width is 175 mm, the profile height is 80%, the disc diameter is 14 inches. We calculate the width of the profile in inches - 175mm = 6.89 inches, if we subtract 30% from this value and round the resulting number to the nearest disc rim value, we get 5 inches. A 175/80R14 tire is calculated to fit a rim width of 5 inches.

Wheel with suspension elements

Conclusion

For the stability of the car, it is necessary to comply with the width of the wheels and the width of the tires specified by the vehicle manufacturer. If you want to increase the size of disks or tires, to improve the appearance of the car or its characteristics, you should use special tables indicating the relationship between the parameters of tires and rubber. At the same time, keep in mind: even if you have correctly chosen the appropriate dimensions of the indicated products, there is a possibility that the disk will not be able to be installed on the car due to the design features of the car. For example, the disk will rest against suspension parts or a caliper. This situation may arise due to the cast shape of the disc, so before beading the tire on the wheel, you should first try it on.

Using the tire calculator, you can easily calculate how the outer dimensions of the wheel, ride height (clearance), speedometer readings and other characteristics will change when you install tires with a different size on your car. The calculator calculates all tire sizes in millimeters, and the vehicle speed in km / h.
Also, the calculator will help you calculate the required rim width for a specific tire size.

How to use the tire calculator:

First enter the standard size installed on your car, and then the one you want to install and click "calculate". The table on the right will show the results of the calculator's calculations.
Detailed information about tire marking in the section: tire marking.

We recommend that you install only the factory tire sizes that are listed in the owner's manual for your machine. Installation of non-standard sizes may void your dealer's warranty and may affect vehicle performance and handling.

When recalculating tire sizes on a calculator, it should be borne in mind that:

With an increase in the diameter of the rim (and, as a result, a decrease in the height of the tire profile so that the outer diameter of the wheel remains unchanged), the load on the car suspension increases, as well as comfort worsens (the car will become noticeably stiffer).

With an excessive increase in the tire profile, the car becomes a “roll”, it is worse controlled, and at critical values of the profile height, the tire may begin to cling to body parts and suspension of the car, which will subsequently lead to its destruction.

Any car moves on the road on wheels, so sooner or later they wear out and the owner faces a difficult choice of new tires and wheels. These two components are closely related to each other and for the correct selection of the most optimal combination, there is a special table of matching tires and wheels.

However, before choosing wheels and tires for a particular car, you should understand their symbols, labeling and classification.

Design features

Structurally, the wheel consists of a rim and a tire, which is assembled from the actual disk part and a rim (therefore, it is not entirely correct to call the wheel a disk), on which a rubber tire is put on. The wheel has many characteristics and dimensions, the main of which are the fit diameter, the wheel offset relative to the mating surface, the number and diameter of drilling holes for installing the wheel on the hub, as well as the fit width of the rim on which the tire is mounted. The last parameter is the most important, as the width of the profile must match the width of the rim.

Selection of wheels and tires

Each automaker sets its own allowable wheel and tire sizes. For some models, they can vary quite widely, but it should be understood that the basic version, which cars are usually equipped with as standard, is universal, satisfying all the basic characteristics and needs. However, the wide range of dimensions means that the car can be customized and tuned to suit specific tastes.

Most manufacturers indicate in the operating instructions the correspondence of tires and wheels. Based on them, you can accurately choose the appropriate option.

The second selection criterion is to check the location of the tire in the wheel arch and the fit of the rubber directly on the wheel. This is carried out empirically and is used in non-standard cases when tuning a car.

The main combinations of different sizes of tires and wheels are shown in the table.

Marking and symbols

All rims and tires are provided with a conditional marking, which contains detailed information about their geometric dimensions. When buying new rims and tires, the owner should know what they mean. As an example, consider the standard wheel of the domestic "Priora" or "Grants". It has the designation R14 4 × 98 d58.5 ET35 J5.5.

R14 - landing (outer) diameter of the wheel rim, indicated in inches.

4 × 98 - indicates the number of holes for fastening the disk to the hub, as well as the diameter of the circle along which they are drilled. Specified in millimeters.

D58.5 is the diameter of the central hole. It corresponds to the diameter of the cap on the hub.

ET35 - rim offset relative to the mating surface (the place where it comes into contact with the hub). The larger it is, the more the wheel will protrude to the side. Specified in millimeters.

J5.5 is the width of the rim in inches.
Tire sizes are also encoded with special designations. For example, consider a tire with a dimension of 195 / 55R16.

The letter "R" in the marking indicates the radial construction of the tire - its metal carcass is located in the radial plane, from the bead to the bead perpendicular to the radius, in contrast to obsolete bias tires, where the carcass is located at an angle.

195 - tire profile width in millimeters.

15 - tire diameter, indicated in inches. It must match the size of the rim.

55 - the percentage ratio of the height of the tire profile to its width, i.e. in this case, the height of the profile is 55% of its width, about 107mm.
For jeeps and crossovers, the tire classification is the same, but there are still differences. Correspondence of the sizes of tires and disks for SUVs are presented in the table.

Basics of the right choice

In order to choose the right tires and wheels for your car, you should, in addition to referring to the size matching table, take into account a few points.

The first is the preferred operating conditions. It's no secret that by installing a larger diameter rim and a tire with a lower profile height, you can maintain the required maximum diameter and it will fit in the arch. However, such a tire will make the ride more rigid. If the car mainly drives on bad roads, then such tires will not only shock the driver and passengers, but also reduce the life of the chassis.

The second is the width of tires and rims. A wider tire has a larger contact patch with the road, and therefore more resistance to rolling force. In addition, wide tires will create more aerodynamic drag. Such a wheel, after all, is simply heavier. Therefore, they will in any case entail an increase in operating costs. Even the best summer tires with different widths have completely different effects on efficiency and other purely physical parameters.

The third point is the correspondence of the rim in terms of the diameter of the central hole, the drilling of the mounting holes and the amount of overhang of the rim. If the center hole is small, then the disk simply cannot be installed on the hub, and if it is large, then it will only be held by attraction with bolts or nuts, and when they are loosened, it will dangle.

If the diameter of the holes for the studs or bolts does not match, the wheel will also not be able to be installed. As an alternative, you can put spacers-adapters.

The last significant factor is the amount of departure. It directly affects the track width and handling of the car. If you do not go into details, then we can say that a wheel with a long offset is worse controlled and the life of the hub bearings and ball bearings is reduced. In addition, such wheels can touch the edges of the wheel arches when turning.

The most correct would be the selection of tires for the car, with a focus on the instruction manual. Manufacturer-recommended averages provide the best combination of vehicle performance and driving safety.
