We change the oil in the Haldex coupling on a Volkswagen Tiguan with our own hands. Frequency of changing the oil in the Haldex coupling on a Volkswagen Tiguan Schedule for changing the oil in the Haldex Tiguan coupling

We will limit ourselves to considering the devices of HALDEX couplings of 4 and 5 generations.

The first ones started on modular platform Tiguan and were used on all initially front-wheel drive models VAG concern(from Transporter T5 to Audi TT) for sale all-wheel drive. Later, around 2010, they were replaced by the next - fifth generation.

How it works

The torque is transmitted from the transmission through transfer case and cardan transmission to rear axle always when moving, but reaches the wheels only when necessary. Our all-wheel drive clutch is located between the rear axle gearbox and the cardan transmission.

In fact, the mechanism is extremely simple. The electronic all-wheel drive control unit, integrated into the clutch housing, receives information about operation from other vehicle systems using digital CAN bus signals (from motor block- about the state of the gas pedal and load, from ABS - about the speed of rotation of each wheel (you need to know when slipping starts rear axle), at automatic transmission- also about the gear being engaged). Based on the results of processing these signals, a decision is made as to how much the clutch can be closed, that is, how much of the cardan transmission transfer torque to the rear wheels.

The clutch itself has a multi-plate wet clutch(similar to clutches in an automatic transmission or even a motorcycle clutch), it is clamped by a hydraulic cylinder with different forces according to a signal from the all-wheel drive control unit, that is, it can work with full or partial slipping or be completely closed. The hydraulic fluid is always under pressure, pumped by the pump, and the valve regulates the piston force.

As you can see, the device is extremely simple and quite reliable.

The design of the 4th and 5th generation couplings is quite similar. In the 4th generation couplings, a filter was built into the hydraulic line, which seems a more logical solution. The fact is that the hydraulic fluid, which transmits the force to the piston to close the multi-plate clutch, is also the fluid in which they float friction discs the same clutch clutch, smoothing out slippage, providing acceptable temperature characteristics work.

This is where the most common malfunction lies. Wear products from the clutch friction material certainly appear in the hydraulic fluid over time and can cause failure of the injection pump.

Remember when we said that the 4th generation couplings had an additional filter, but the 5th generation did not have it? The manufacturer noted a change in design and a change in maintenance regulations:

This replacement is designed to extend the life of the pump.

I’ll add on my own that even in the 5th generation it’s worth changing the oil about once every 60,000 km.

Please don't forget about common mistake craftsmen who work without ELSA. The rear axle gearbox has two separate housings: for the rear axle differential - there is a normal transmission fluid for the entire service life of the vehicle, for clutch rear wheel drive. The liquids are not mixed, the plugs are structurally close together, it is extremely easy to confuse and mess things up. Make sure your car is approached by someone who understands what they are doing.

Failure of the pump will be marked by a deterioration in cross-country ability, but it is not a fact that it will manifest itself as an error. The machine cannot control the result of the clutch closure in any way, except through the wheel speed sensors on the rear axle in the ABS unit. The clutch itself contains only a temperature and pressure sensor for the hydraulic fluid (overheating, by the way, can cause a short-term limitation of torque transmission to the rear axle - an unpleasant surprise when driving off-road). Okay, at least the best frequent malfunction- pump failure - they will simply make the car front-wheel drive without any serious consequences.

ELSA provides various procedures checking the closure/opening of the clutch depending on its generation and vehicle. All functional checks are performed using diagnostic equipment.

From practice, we once saw when the clutch was jammed in a closed state and the moment was constantly divided between the front and rear axle in half. The car bounced with its inner wheels when cornering. At the client's insistence, we removed the driveshaft and turned the car into a front-wheel drive one. We never found out the reasons for this breakdown. We think that’s how the car still drives.

To be fair, it should be noted that most of the problems with all-wheel drive in these cars are far-fetched. Failures and breakdowns are not widespread.

Simply and without fanaticism, change every 60,000 km hydraulic fluid in the coupling. If there is a filter (4th generation Haldex), then that too. Everything will work - simple design.

Today we will teach you how to properly change the oil in a 4th generation Haldex coupling with your own hands using an example Volvo car XC70.

To work, we need a filter, it comes complete with a lid, the lid has additional fastening screws (the cost of the set is 2500 rubles), a liter canister of oil (about 750 grams are filled in the system).

The oil filter is located at the top of the coupling; to get to it you need to unscrew it cardan shaft and take him aside. First, we apply marks so that we can then put the shaft in its original place:

Use a 8mm hex to unscrew the 6 bolts securing the shaft to the flange:

Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the 4 bolts securing the propeller shaft support bracket:

Remove the cross member and unscrew the cardan fastenings to bevel gear. At the back there is a hinge with a tight fit in the clutch cage, in order to pull it out without much difficulty, you need to help it with a mandrel, there are holes in the cage that are not threaded, we insert our mandrel there and with small blows of a hammer we push the hinge as the car moves:

Using a 24mm socket we unscrew the nut securing the cage, there are two options: make a mandrel to hold this coupling from turning, or, as in our case, use an impact wrench:

Using a copper mandrel we knock the coupling off the shaft:

In this case, a small amount of oil will leak out; prepare the necessary container for it in advance. Now we have free access to the covers oil filter. Remove the engine and drain the oil from the coupling. We unscrew the two bolts securing the motor, to do this we use a 4-point hexagon:

Take a flat screwdriver and pry the motor through the groove:

This will cause oil to flow out again. There is a mesh on the motor, it is clogged, it needs to be removed and washed, it is attached with Torx T10 screws:

Use a 4mm hex to unscrew the two bolts securing the oil filter cover:

Use some kind of hook to hook the plastic plug. We put new filter into place until you hear a characteristic click:

Lubricate the sealing collar of the plastic plug and install it on seat. Finally, pour new oil into the coupling, filler plug turnkey 13, approximately 650 grams included, control the level along the lower edge of the filler hole:

Now we need to start the engine so that the Haldex clutch pump turns on, it pumps oil through the system, fills the filter, after which we check the level again.

Backup video on how to change the oil in the clutch Haldex Volvo XC70:

The oil in the clutch plays very important role. It lubricates rubbing parts and requires replacement after 60,000 km of vehicle mileage. But if the machine is operated with increased loads and mainly off-road, it is recommended to change the oil earlier. Replacing the lubricant in the coupling with your own hands is a very simple procedure.

Clutch and principle of its operation

The mechanical part consists of:

  • Input shaft.
  • Axial piston pump.
  • Working piston.
  • driven shaft.
  • Drive heads.
  • Disc cam.
  • Friction discs.

If one wheel slips, a difference in the rotation of the drive and driven shafts occurs on the machine, thereby the protruding or descending part of the cam washer enters the piston. When the piston reciprocates in the hydraulic system, the pressure of the lubricating fluid increases.
The set of discs then compress between the shafts and then engage.

The hydraulic part consists of:

  • Electric pump.
  • Oil filter.
  • Discharge valve.
  • Inlet valve.
  • Pressure regulator with adjustable valve.
  • Safety trip valve.
  • Hydraulic accumulator.

In order for the entire system to work quickly, the electric recharge pump begins to rotate at 400 rpm, thereby pumping up pressure to 4 kgf/cm2. The feeding pressure is maintained by a hydraulic accumulator, thereby affecting the surface of the electric pump piston, as well as the piston itself.

The advantage is that the piston contacts the disc cam on one side. And the other side, using backpressure, eliminates the gap on the friction disk set.–
The hydraulic accumulator, in addition to maintaining pressure, performs another important task - it equalizes incoming pressure fluctuations. When there is no pressure on the feed line, the spring on the accumulator is released. And through the battery itself, the lubricant is not discharged from the entire line. Wherein high blood pressure on the line does not occur due to the bypass of the lubricating fluid through the battery to the lubricant collection tank itself. When the pressure decreases, in this case the spring expands and reduces or completely stops dropping the lubricant into the container.

Car maintenance: draining and filling lubricating fluid from a device that connects rotating shafts

The clutch is controlled electronically, which includes input sensors and then actuators and the electronic unit. The input is a lubricant temperature sensor.

The control unit converts control actions on the actuator into input information. Except temperature sensor lubricating fluid, the electrical unit uses the transmitted information from the engine block control and ABS control, which is obtained via the CAN bus.

System actuator control is a valve that regulates the compression pressure of the friction discs from 0% to 100% of the maximum value. At the same time, the pump and accumulator ensure that the lubricating fluid pressure in the system is maintained at 3 MPa.

Clutch lubrication system and its maintenance

During operation, the coupling requires attention and timely service. If you follow very simple maintenance, the coupling will last a very long time.

  • You need to monitor the lubricant level. Also inspect the coupling for lubricant leaks.
  • The lubricating fluid and filter must be replaced in a timely manner.

Advantages of the Haldex coupling

  • The dignity of front-wheel drive is preserved.
  • There is no increased stress in the transmission when maneuvering and parking.
  • There is no sensitivity when there are different tires.
  • There are no restrictions when towing with a suspended axle.
  • Unlimited combination with others ABS systems, EDS, ASR, ESP.
  • All-wheel drive is constantly carried out, as well as electronic regulation of the clutch itself.

Preparatory work and operations

The main thing is to prepare all the tools that will be required for the work, as well as buy oil and a filter. You need to buy oil G055175A2. It will be consumed within 650 ml, so it is advisable to buy a liter. Oil, as well as a filter, need to be purchased High Quality, since this will make the coupling last longer. Not worth buying too cheap oil, since the quality may not be very good.

List of required tools:

  • A small vessel into which the waste liquid will be drained.
  • Keys to unscrew the drain and fill plug.
  • A key for unscrewing the lid under which the filter is located.
  • Pliers.
  • Portable lamp or flashlight.
  • Latex gloves.
  • Rags.
  • Safety glasses.
  • A stock syringe with a tube for pouring lubricant into the Haldex coupling.

For Volvo cars a similar Haldex coupling is installed fourth generation, but a filter is provided for it as a separate spare part. To replace it, you will need to unscrew the two bolts of the standard filter cover. Further using the software VAG-Com Original clutch oil ", or with the car running, engage the gear for a few seconds. After these manipulations, the sealing cover will slide out, then it must be carefully removed (it is not supplied as a separate spare part). The next step is to remove the filter and replace it with a new one, drain the old oil and fill in the new one. After all operations, you need to start the car and let it run in gear, then add oil to the control hole (filler plug).

It is also recommended to remove the clutch pump Original clutch oil to clean its oil strainer. Clumps of coupling wear products often accumulate on it, which negatively affects its throughput and accordingly reduces the resource.

Changing the oil in the Haldex coupling on a Tiguan is quite simple, and even an ordinary person can do it with their own hands, without any special equipment, you just have to delve a little into this issue.

Before replacing, let's figure out what a Haldex coupling is, what it does and what it consists of. Haldex is used in 4Motion all-wheel drive systems; it carries out and controls the transmission of torque from the front axle of the car to the rear. Haldex is located in the differential housing of the rear axle.

Currently, fourth-generation Haldex couplings are installed on 4Motion all-wheel drive systems; they have a simpler design than their predecessors. The fourth generation Haldex consists of a pump, control system, pressure accumulator and friction discs.

As you can see, the clutch is an important component of the car and the oil in it needs to be changed every 50-60 thousand kilometers so that it functions normally and does not let you down at the most inopportune moment.

How to change the oil in the Haldex clutch on a VW Tiguan.

First, let's buy oil. You should purchase G055175A2. The replacement process will use about 650 ml, so take a liter.

Let me remind you that Haldex is located in the differential housing of the rear axle. Photo for clarity:

So let's get started.
1. During the replacement process, the main thing is not to confuse the plugs of the rear axle gearbox and the Haldex coupling, since such a mistake will be critical, because a completely different oil is poured into the rear axle.

2. Look carefully at the picture:

3. The Haldex coupling plugs are shown in red, while the rear axle gearbox plugs are shown in green.

4. First we need to drain the waste, to do this we place a glass (more than 600 ml) under the bottom plug and unscrew it, wait until this cloudy slurry has drained, then unscrew the top plug and only after that, making sure that the remaining waste in a thin stream has stopped flowing into the glass, tighten the bottom cap and begin replacing.

5. Take new oil, draw it into a 100-cc syringe, and if necessary, put a tube on the tip.

6. Pour oil until it flows over the top, then plug the hole with a plug, wipe everything that is dirty, and that’s it, the job is done, the oil is changed.

Thus, the oil change in the Haldex coupling is completed, and road tests can be carried out.
