The smallest gasoline engine is new. He is the only one not aggregated with a four-speed automatic transmission - only "manual" with five gears. A wide range of modifications is a major trump card in the struggle for the consumer. One and the same car must change its character: become cheap or foppish, sedate or fast, family or individual. The body of the new "Astra" is a matter of special pride for its creators. Firstly, it is distinguished by a very thorough aerodynamic study. The drag coefficient - only 0.29 - is a very good result.

Secondly, the high strength of the body. Its torsional rigidity compared to the body of the old "Astra" has increased significantly. The power circuit meets all passive safety requirements. In which case the body will crumple "correctly", saving passengers. The body structure is such that with a weight increase of only 15 kg compared to the old Opel Astra, its angular torsional rigidity is 78% higher than that of the previous model. Note that about 20 grades of steel are used in the body of the new Astra. In part, the "extra" metal was used to increase the size of the car. So, the base has grown by 97 mm, the front and rear tracks have become larger by 54 and 31 mm, respectively.

And the last thing - a 12-year guarantee against perforating corrosion of the body speaks volumes about the quality of the material, technology and applied protective coatings. I don't even want to pronounce the word "galvanized". Today this will surprise no one ... True, the new body of the "Astra" is heavier and in order for the car not to gain excess weight, something had to be lightened. There are also seat belts with a pyron tensioner, four airbags - two front and two side, hidden in the backs of the front seats. The design of the pedal assembly is similar to that of the Opel Vectra. If, upon impact, the deformation "reaches" the pedals, they do not move, but simply ... fall off: the brackets crumple and "release" the pedals. Studies have shown that pedals can seriously injure the ankle in a collision.

The front suspension seems to be ordinary - triangular "in terms of" levers, a spring-shock absorber strut, a stabilizer. As is customary today, the suspension elements, the steering rack, the power unit are attached to the subframe, and that, in turn, through elastic cushions, to the body. And yet there are some highlights here. For example, the front pillar, take it in your hands - you will be surprised: it is painfully light. Here it is, the fight against kilograms. Light alloy rack enclosures. But that is not all. The stabilizer struts are made of carbon fiber (made of ultra-light and durable plastic based on carbon fibers). In general, light alloys are widely used in the construction of the Astra - even for the steering wheel frame.

The easiest way to tell about the rear suspension design is like that of the "Samara". Such a suspension of the rear wheels on trailing arms, connected by an elastic transverse beam (otherwise - semi-independent), has proven itself perfectly on cars of this class and is used to this day not only on "Astra". Rear suspension mounts are designed to provide steering effect when cornering.

The peculiarity of the car is the electro-hydraulic power steering. The usual pump, driven by a belt from the crankshaft, is not here: it was replaced by a high-speed electric pump. Advantages - less power loss for the pump drive, the unit is compact (the entire amplifier seems to "hang" on the rail) and, most importantly, excellent vehicle responses.

Gasoline engines of the EKOTEC family: Gas distribution with four valves per cylinder, intake pipes of variable length, modern materials and technologies. The two-liter engine is equipped with balance shafts to combat imbalance. As a rule, balance shafts for in-line "four" are considered overkill, but with them it works smoother - the machine becomes "more comfortable". It is noteworthy that the Opel Astra K in the new body has become a little more compact than the car of the previous generation. The overall length of the hatchback is 4,370 mm (-50), the wheelbase has been reduced by 20 mm to 2,662, and the height is 1,460 (-26). At the same time, according to the assurances of the creators, the space in the cabin has even slightly increased. For example, at the feet of the rear passengers, due to the new front seats, it has become more spacious by 35 millimeters.

The base engine for the model is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder SIDI Ecotec turbo engine with 105 hp. from the new, and besides it, the line includes 1.6-liter diesel engines (CDTI in 95, 140 and 170 power output options) and gasoline turbocharged engines. This is a new 1.4-liter all-aluminum Ecotec unit, available in 125 and 150 horsepower options (245 Nm thrust in both cases), as well as the top-end 200-horsepower 1.6.

In addition, the Opel Astra K 2018 received a new six-speed manual transmission that weighs only 37 kilograms. It first appeared on the compact presented at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

As for the "charged" modification of the Opel Astra K OPC, it will probably also switch from a two-liter unit to a 1.6-liter engine, but its capacity will be 285 forces against 280 earlier. Together with a significantly reduced weight, it is quite good, but there is no official information yet.

European sales of the new Opel Astra K started at the end of 2015, no pricing information is available. But Russian buyers should not wait for a novelty, since GM is about to curtail sales of Opel cars in our country due to the crisis.
