The car was rented in Sao Paulo for a trip to Rio de Janeiro for work. Initially we planned to take a VW Jetta with a 2.5 engine; I really wanted to try it out on a mountain road. My mother-in-law has a Jetta, but with a modest 1.6 with an automatic transmission, I drove this car a lot and, in general, I like the car, but it feels like it’s more powerful engine she is capable of much more. But bypassing everything rental offices in the center, we found out that Jetta is available in only 2 of them, while the rest were more specialized in the cheapest segment of cars with engines from 1 to 1.4 liters. Driving one on a mountain road is simply an insult to oneself (although I used one in the city until recently without problems) and a waste of time.
The offers for the Jetta were striking in their originality: it was proposed to pay 300 reais per day, block 10 to 20% of the cost on the card in case of theft (a Jetta in Brazil costs 80 thousand reais) + pay an insurance deductible of 2 thousand reais + for each kilometer traveled over the limit 250 km. per day, pay an additional 2.3 reals. We decided to take something simpler, these were a Corolla 1.8 automatic transmission and a Chevrolet Vectra 2.0 automatic transmission (at home we know it as Opel Astra sedan). Unfortunately, we also did not find these cars for the dates we needed and were left with only Ford Fusion 2.5 automatic transmission or Toyota Camry 3.5 automatic transmission armored and with a driver. There was little choice, so we took Ford. It cost us 350 reais per day.

First impressions: the level of the car is definitely felt, it’s comfortable behind the wheel, the sound insulation is very decent, the suspension is soft but quite elastic, the steering wheel is very light. Despite its dimensions, and this Ford is longer and wider than a Camry, it is quite convenient to drive this car in the city, but due to its large dimensions, we were not able to drive onto the minus second floor of our parking lot in an office building. Clearance for this long car clearly too small - 14.5 cm. The speakers in the city are quite enough, but some thoughtfulness 6 step box slightly annoying. Average consumption by on-board computer showed 17 liters per 100 km. (we had markings in kilometers and liters). Side mirrors large and very comfortable, but almost nothing is visible in the interior mirror, due to the strong tilt rear window and wide rear pillars, thanks to which for rear view a narrow gap remains.
Having got out of the city, we tried what the car is capable of: the acceleration dynamics are normal for such a large and heavy car, it felt a little slower than the Accord in last body, that is, at the level of 11 seconds per hundred, the maximum is artificially limited at 160 kilometers per hour, but it is felt that the threshold of 200 km/h for this engine is unlikely to be overcome (I suspect that the version with a 3.5 engine and all-wheel drive is much more interesting). I did not find data on acceleration and maximum speed for this car.
We got a pretty decent package: two-way climate control, leather interior (including the steering wheel and gear lever), 17" wheels, a 6-disc CD changer, electrically adjustable front seats, multifunction steering wheel, rain and light sensors and much more. There were buttons for the Sirius radio and communication between the audio system and the phone, but nothing could be done with them; perhaps, for these functions to work, you need to purchase certain units.

On the highway the car behaves quite predictably, but it feels like this engine is just enough for it, the mass of the car requires a more powerful engine. The light steering wheel didn’t really interfere, but when we drove into the mountains with quite sharp turns, it became clear that the steering wheel lacked information content, sometimes when entering a turn at high speed, the trajectory had to be “groped”. The box clearly lacks a sports and manual mode, they are not here, but there is a mode for towing “L”, that is, it is immediately clear what the car was created for.

Opinions were divided regarding the seats with lateral support: after the Passat, I thought they were quite comfortable, but the support was too small; a friend, after the Corolla, didn’t like the seats, he said that he felt cramped in them, although he was no wider in build than me. Thanks to the comfortable settings of the power steering, the car absorbs all the little things on the road and does not transfer it to the steering wheel, I also liked this. In general, even on a mountain road, driving this car is pleasant, high speed you can keep it, but from sporty style control due to the steering settings will have to be abandoned, although it is felt that the suspension is capable of more, despite its “softness” the car does not roll much in corners. The box always operates in economy mode, at a speed of about a hundred it holds 2 thousand revolutions per second.

The brakes, in principle, are normal, but they grab a little late; to start braking, you have to press the pedal about a quarter. You get used to it, but you feel the inconvenience.
A little about the salon. The interior is pleasant, comfortable and of fairly high quality. The plastic is soft, but despite the fact that the mileage on our car was only 15,000 km, it was scratched in some places (I think scratching easily is its specialty). The glove compartment is frankly small, that is, the lid is large, and when you open it you see that a third is not used for its intended purpose, and besides, the glove compartment does not have a backlight.

The climate deserves a special mention, because although it works fine, its controls are the stupidest thing I've seen. The climate in this car is controlled using 16 buttons, some of which are frankly unnecessary. For example, the climate control button is in the center of the knob on the driver's side; logically, to turn it off, you need to press it again. But no, to turn off the climate, there is a separate off button. During all this time I never used the auxiliary buttons, I only used the “auto” mode.

There is enough space in the rear seats, but it seemed to me that Camry more. Having checked the wheelbases, I came to the conclusion that this is the case; the Camry, with its smaller external dimensions, has a longer wheelbase.

When dusk came, and then night, it became clear that the lighting was quite good, even in areas without cars there was no need to use the high beam, the low beam was quite enough. For testing, I turned on the long-range one, quite at the level of good ones modern cars mobiles.
Light control, following example European cars, placed on a separate switch to the left of the steering wheel, it’s convenient. But everything else is driven by one lever: turn signals, wipers, and low/high beam. The lever is somewhat overloaded with functions, not like a Mercedes, but still unusual. The cruise control is controlled only by buttons on the steering wheel and does not have a separate lever, this is also inconvenient, since with a lever it is more convenient to adjust cruise modes without taking your eyes off the road. The turn signals do not have a three-time blinking mode when pressed briefly, I was already used to this and thought that this was already the norm for modern cars.
There is a separate button on the panel for turning on the lights in the legs: it turns on the lights in the legs of the passenger, the driver, or both at the same time. I don’t understand why this is needed. As in many Ford cars, the Fusion has a Sony audio system installed, it seems to sound fine (but I wouldn’t rely on my opinion if I were you, since I have no ear for music).

My favorite feature of American cars is the lock button. central lock there was also one on the passenger side, it’s a shame that this is not on European cars.

Now I will find fault: the car is of quite high quality, but it has the disadvantages inherent in many “Americans”. They probably don’t even pay attention to them, but after the Passat these little things catch my eye. For example, where I am used to seeing microlifts (in various drawers, etc.), there is nothing here, the sun visor, for example, does not press against the roof, but dangles a few millimeters from the ceiling, a small compartment for glasses, again without a microlift .

Disgusting trunk upholstery. This is better, of course, than no upholstery at all, but it is clear that it was done “to be”, but the size of the trunk is quite decent, the opening is wide, the capacity is 530 liters.

There is no button to open the trunk from the outside, only with the key or from inside the car. The central armrest is inconvenient; it is large, two-sectional and deep, but my elbow cannot reach it, that is, the armrest is rather just a box for small items. The display in the center of the panel, between the tachometer and speedometer, is not informative enough; some of the information is displayed on the audio system display, which makes you distract from the road. There are also not enough customizable functions, fuel consumption, trip data (Trip A and B), system language, auto-lock/auto-unlock doors and that’s it.
As far as I remember, there’s nothing else to complain about, maybe I’ll remember something, then I’ll add it. By the way, during our trip average consumption dropped to 12 liters per 100 kilometers, which for such big car quite normal indicator.
The impression of the car was positive. If the Americans strain a little more, they may well reach the level of a normal European car. In my opinion, Fusion is european car, but he's still 80%, 20% American. Could I drive this at home in Russia? I think I could, but I would have to change my driving style a little. But if there was a choice between it and the Passat 1.8TSI I drove before, I would choose the Passat.
