Studded tire rating. Budget winter tire test. A pleasant surprise from Belshin. Mandatory reading

The choice of good tires for the winter is of great importance, since the confidence of the car's behavior on snowy, icy roads depends on the tires. Drivers are often irresponsible about this issue, which makes it difficult for them at the last moment to buy really good and suitable tires for the features of the car or driving style. During the warm season, prudent car enthusiasts observe market trends, study ratings of winter studded tires and draw appropriate conclusions before buying. Several key criteria have been used to determine the best studded tires. This allowed us to compose a certain top, which included 10 tires from different manufacturers.

TOP of the best winter studded tires.

Criterias of choice

All studied studded winter tires that claimed to be included in the ranking were sorted based on several critical criteria. To determine the best tires, the experts started from the following:

  1. Manufacturer. This criterion plays an important role, since large manufacturers have more than just a big name. This is a large staff of specialists, modern equipment, own research centers, test sites, etc.
  2. Rubber quality. Here again, the manufacturer is of great importance, since large companies have the opportunity to purchase and use high-quality raw materials for the further production of tires. The final quality is determined by the degree of wear, resistance to low temperatures and service life.
  3. Resilience of thorns. Since the 2018 ranking includes the best winter studded tires, attention should be paid to the behavior of these metal elements. It often happens that the spiked wheels begin to gradually turn into ordinary Velcro.
  4. Reviews of motorists. Basically, the best winter studded tires are determined by the users of this very rubber. After exploitation, they form a definite opinion, on the basis of which the final rating is created. Here, we also listened to the public's opinion, compiling the final top 10 of the best winter studded tires in 2018.

It is also important to note that the best spiked in 2018 was determined from among the most popular sizes that are in demand among motorists. Therefore, the rating compiled includes the following dimensions:

Rating representatives

Since various criteria were taken as a basis to help determine which winter tires with spikes are the best in 2018, time-tested manufacturers are included in the rating. As a result of careful testing and study of consumer feedback, it was revealed that the best studded rubber this year belongs to the following manufacturers:

  • Nokian;
  • Goodyear;
  • Pirelli;
  • Hankook;
  • Michelin;
  • Continental;
  • Gislaved.

Now let's see what the presented companies are ready to offer this season, and why their studded tires were included in the rating of the best.

With such an interesting name, Michelin launched its winter studded tires on the market, which a fairly large number of car owners preferred to choose. This rubber had a predecessor, compared with which the new product has shrunk. According to the statements of the company's engineers, this figure has improved by 10%. The special shape of the tread, the special design of the sipes and the stable studs allow you to firmly grip the surface, grab onto the ice and push off the slippery road without slipping. The tires perform well when handling snow, slush and ice crumbs.

Experts also note that this is the best studded rubber in terms of braking distance under braking conditions on dry asphalt. Therefore, with such tires, you can feel confident in all situations that an insidious winter can prepare. Add to this the combination of low price and relatively high performance, which will provide excellent tires for several winter seasons. Therefore, a well-deserved place in the 2018 ranking.

Tires manufactured by Pirelli. Here, the developers have provided for a special directional tread pattern, which has a well-thought-out central rib. Together with the hexagonal studs, the construction creates a rubber that is stable on different surfaces. The tires have decent driving characteristics. As part of testing, the tires were found to perform well on wet asphalt, on ice and on snowy road sections. Experts note that this rubber is best installed for use in winter in those regions where melt snow and wet surfaces prevail on the roads.

Tires are equally well suited for small cars and large SUVs. Demonstrates high performance in urban conditions, when the roads are covered with snow and you have to move carefully in heavy traffic. The rubber does not lose grip on dry asphalt, despite the presence of quite impressive studs. Another weighty argument in favor of such tires is the affordable price. In many ways, this predetermined such a high popularity and demand for tires among consumers. These tires are deservedly included in the rating. Though not the best spiked one in 2018.

The developers from the Hankook company came up with a rather complicated name for their winter studded tires. This is a South Korean development, which provides for the presence of a V-shaped tread and a symmetrical pattern on the tires. There was also an earlier model, from which the novelty differs in a different wheel tread relief. Now in the middle of the rubber there is a special separation barrier of a rather impressive size.

Also, the developers made several other tread blocks, which became larger, and the distance between them increased. An important innovation is the fact that this studded winter tire has received more sipes. To increase their density, a total of more than 120 slats were provided by the engineers. Such innovations and design changes, supplemented by a new composition of the rubber itself, made it possible to achieve excellent elasticity, resistance to different weather conditions, stable behavior on various types of surfaces, as well as long-term use of tires. It's not for nothing that Hankook was included in this 2018 ranking. Their products have objectively improved.

Tires with absolutely average performance in the rating of winter studded tires. This is not to say that this is the best rubber. But the development of the Gislaved company cannot be attributed to the number of outsiders either. Therefore, you have found a strong middle peasant who has all the necessary characteristics for confident operation in Russia in winter conditions. The manufacturer from Sweden represented by Gislaved is a subsidiary of Continental, which already makes it possible to understand what level of quality we are talking about here.

The subsidiary has managed to create high quality tires. The Swedes are well aware of what a snowy winter is, an ice layer on the road and other delights of a harsh winter season. Therefore, when developing tires with spikes, they took into account the basic needs of drivers. Structurally, the shape of the treads on the rubber allows you to confidently cling to snow-covered and icy surfaces on the road. But on dry asphalt, confidence is somewhat reduced, which does not interfere with various sections with an adequate driving style.

The presence of spikes does not greatly affect noise vibrations. Thanks to the high-quality tire composition, rubber elasticity and competent stud distribution, the noise level in the cabin remains at an acceptable level. It is important to understand that it cannot be. The only question is whether the tires will make noise and even muffle the music, or behave calmly and confidently, as in the case of the Nord Frost 100.

Studded development from one of the world's leading tire manufacturers, Goodyear. The developers applied a special technology focused on reducing the braking distance. These tires, called Grip Ice Arctic, according to company officials, were created specifically for use in Ukraine, Russia and the Baltic countries. Therefore, the developers took into account local weather conditions, which allows us to speak about the confident operation of tires on our roads.

The projector has a V-shape with sharp-angled louvres and channels. The latter are designed to effectively remove water and moisture from under the wheels. But the tread has an important feature. It consists in the fact that the protector performs the function of a breakwater and a distributor at the same time. All moisture is distributed evenly over the surface and removed to the outside, minimizing the danger of aquaplaning.

A special design, which was created on the basis of a special rubber compound, made it possible to produce tires adapted for driving on snow, ice and wet asphalt. Performance in dry asphalt conditions is slightly worse, but this does not prevent tires from taking a confident place in the ranking of the best studded wheels of 2018.

Finnish excellent quality by Nokian. These tires have rightly been ranked and are considered by some to be the best winter studded tire. Whether such a statement is true or not is difficult to judge objectively. Note that these tires are quieter when driving on asphalt when compared with previous competitors. The developers managed to achieve this effect thanks to the use of softening cushions provided on the tread. They further increase the wear resistance of the studs. Therefore, the loss of the first metal elements will not begin soon.

A fair place in the middle of the rating, which confirms the high quality of products and good performance. The tires failed to climb higher, as a weak point was identified in tests confirmed by ordinary drivers. The disadvantage is that sometimes on icy areas and on a wet track, the tires do not behave sufficiently stable. To counterbalance such a subjective disadvantage, an argument in the face of democratic value can be cited. For all its advantages, this rubber costs relatively little.

Again, the development of the Nokian company from Finland. This is the answer to the question of which winter tires with spikes are better to choose, given the optimal ratio between price and quality. The Finns did a great job creating these tires. There are no complaints about the quality, the rubber has excellent performance characteristics, which are perfectly combined with an affordable price. It is this ratio of characteristics that attracts a large number of buyers. It is important to note one more feature that the Finns have come up with for their tires. They call it bear claw. This is a special tread element that allows you to confidently grip the road surface and maintain stability in motion, regardless of road conditions.

Excellent winter studded tires that ranked third in the 2018 rankings. The developers of this project are Italian engineers from the Pirelli company. This is a winter tire with studs, which is oriented to use only with passenger cars. The manufacturer himself claims that before entering the market, the tires underwent lengthy tests in the conditions of the most severe winter. At the same time, they were satisfied with the results, as well as with all the technical parameters.

In general, Pirelli's hitting the top should not surprise anyone. For many years they have been developing special series of tires for the participation of cars in professional rallies. Therefore, Pirelli knows better than anyone else what driving in winter and stability on snowy and icy roads is. They transferred their rally experience to the development of conventional tires, creating a double stud and increasing the number of sipes. The tread profile has been designed to provide stable road handling, good handling and uniform, gradual rubber wear.

The fact that the model is a little noisy, and also somewhat loses grip during sharp turns, did not allow the rubber to rise a little higher than the third line. One important piece of advice can be given here. In winter, do not try to enter corners at high speed. Here, even the most tenacious rubber will not protect against the possible consequences of a skid.

Deserved second place for tires from Continental. German specialists used special synthetic elastomers in the composition, and the spikes were shaped like truncated quadrangular pyramids. Before the release of these tires, the predecessors received round studs, on which snow crumbs actively adhered, due to which the grip area was noticeably reduced. This negatively affected the stability of the car when driving on snowy and icy areas.

The new thorns now have an improved shape, they received special channels through which the ice chips are diverted. Plus, they began to be recorded using a completely new technology. Carbide studs on the spikes firmly grip surfaces, allowing the car to accelerate quickly and shorten braking distances. It is not for nothing that tires are among the leaders and deservedly occupy a high position in our rating. Excellent quality and excellent performance are confirmed by multiple reviews of car owners.

The leader of the season, which has recently appeared in the assortment of Nokian. As practice and the results of the rating show, Nokian is the best tire manufacturer for winter operating conditions. New tires are made from a special mixture. It uses rubber, silicone and canola oil to achieve excellent performance. The Finns have developed a tread paired with studs aimed at maximum grip on surfaces. This allows motorists to confidently maneuver and move at high speed on snow, ice, slush, wet and dry asphalt.

The rubber compound was highly appreciated by experts and consumers themselves. As part of the tests, it was proved that the Finns did not exaggerate, speaking about the increased resistance to wear of the compound. Such tires are really capable of serving several seasons without losing their original characteristics and capabilities. The spikes do not start to fall off, which is explained by the special technology of their attachment.

Each of the presented tires deserves its high place in the rating. Some have certain disadvantages, which are difficult to call significant. Objectively, it's hard to say which spike tires are the best. Although experts and ordinary consumers made it clear that the main emphasis in winter in Russia is placed on the products of the Finnish company Nokian and the Italian Pirelli, this does not in any way diminish the value of the products of other manufacturers, which are in the top 10.

Therefore, when choosing tires, be guided by the recommendations of your car manufacturer, select based on the available budget, and try not to save on winter tires. Quality tires guarantee your safety.

Mas Motors

The original central groove in the form of a snake, "decorating" the tread of these tires, allows you to easily keep the car on ice, snow and slush. Increased traction is provided by 128 studs in 4 rows. The optimized rubber compound results in high wear resistance of the rubber.

5. Nokian Nordman 4

Under each stud on these tires, there is an elastic cushion that softens road contact, reduces noise and increases stud strength. The arrow-shaped tread pattern allows for better drainage of wet snow and mud from under the wheels.

4. Gislaved NordFrost 100

The large "blocks" of the tread of this rubber are irregularly shaped, which provides better grip on the winter road. The best winter tires are developed using computer technology. In this case, it was on the computer that the wave-like 3D sipes were simulated, increasing controllability.

3. Michelin X-Ice North 2

The tires have 12 lines of studs and a double-layer tread structure to securely hold the studs and increase tire life. Compared to the first model, X-IceNorth 2 has 10% better braking on ice, handling in snow and 5% better handling on ice and directional stability.

2. Continental ContiIceContact

This range of tires includes all sizes for cars from compact class to all-wheel drive SUVs. Compared to the previous “hit” of the manufacturer ContiWinterViking 2, these tires have improved grip and handling on all types of road surfaces.

1. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8

Hakkapeliitta 8 - the best winter tires 2013 - 2014. Compared to last year's model, the number of studs in the "eight" was increased by 48-50% depending on the size. At the same time, the tires are lighter, and the new spike shape provides optimal grip. These tires, having passed the test of winter studded tires 2013-2014 from the experts of the magazine "Za Rulem", received the maximum rating for 13 indicators out of 16 possible.

Try your luck!

It is not worth comparing the results of studded and non-studded tires, since they were tested on different days, in different weather conditions, and the ratio of grip properties of both tires depends on the weather very much. At one temperature, "thorns" appear in front, at another - soft "Velcro". We figured it out a few years ago: ZR, 2009, No. 1

Now let's introduce the participants.

15 INCH NON-STAMPED

The most expensive tires are Nokian at 4150 rubles, but they are also the best - Hakkapeliitta R (Russian-made), together with Michelin X-Ice 2, shared the first place. The price / quality ratio is 4.5.

Slightly cheaper, for 4,100 rubles, you can buy ContiVikingContact 5. Our results suggest that these tires are in place. True, in terms of price / quality ratio (4.6), this purchase is slightly less profitable.

But Michelin X-Ice 2 is in the best position in the price competition: 3900 rubles. The price / quality ratio, equal to 4.2, is the most attractive in the top three. We believe that the price of this tire is deliberately understated, since there is already a new model on the market - the third generation Michelin X-Ice. It was officially presented last winter outside Russia, postponing the official presentation of the novelty with us for almost a year.

In fourth place is Goodyear UltraGrip Ice + 3560 rubles each. per piece (we assume the price is too high - payment for a high brand). The price / quality ratio is 4.1.

The fifth in the financial ranking is followed by Bridgestone Blizzak Revo GZ - 3520 rubles. The tire is just a little cheaper. With 892 points in our tests, it came in fourth place with an even more attractive price / performance ratio of 4.0.

Quite close in price (3500 rubles), but the next tire is already in sixth place - Pirelli Winter IceControl. In the final table he also takes the sixth place with 846 points. We believe that it should be sold a little cheaper: now the price / quality index is 4.1 - like that of the stronger Goodyear.

Yokohama iceGUARD iG35 for 3400 rubles. in seventh place, although in the test it showed the eighth result, gaining only 820 points. Once they buy, it means that there are those who are ready to pay for the Made in Japan inscription.

Nizhnekamsk Viatti Brina scored 816 points and took ninth place. A tire with a foreign name at a price of only 2600 rubles. apiece should sell well, say local marketers. Let's wish them good luck.

The cheapest tire is the Cordiant Polar SL for 2500 re. And in the test, it took seventh place, even ahead of the Japanese product. In our opinion, 826 points with a price / quality ratio equal to 3.0 is a result worthy of attention.

All tables are opened in full size by mouse click.

16 INCH SPIKES

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 for 6600 rub. ahead of the rest of the planet. Expensive, but deserved, as these are the best tires in our test: 929 points. The price / quality ratio is also "leading" - 7.1.

In second place is ContiIceContact. The difference with the winner is 200 rubles. ("Conti" costs 6400 rubles) and 4 points give a decrease in the price / quality index to 6.9.

The third place is taken by the new Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic, which is fair, since the tire is clearly one of the leaders. You can buy it for 5500 rubles.

Michelin X-Ice North 2 is sold a little cheaper - for 5400 rubles. The cost is even slightly underestimated, because in our tests XIN 2 scored 923 points, the price / quality ratio is the most attractive in the leading three of the test: 5.9.

Another 100 rubles. cheaper than Gislaved NordFrost 5 (5300 rubles). As a result of the test, the tire scored 905 points, taking the sixth place. The price / quality ratio of 5.9 is equivalent to Michelin. Our people love "Gislaved", therefore they do not spare money.

In sixth place Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000 for 5250 rubles. In our tests, this model was only able to take eighth place, gaining 855 points. The price / quality ratio is 6.1 - more than that of Michelin and Gislaved.

In seventh position is the Pirelli Winter Carving Edge, which can be bought for 5200 rubles. We recommend these tires as they came in fourth place in the tests with 918 points. And with such a cost, the price / quality ratio is the most attractive in the first six of the test: 5.7.

Followed by Yokohama iceGUARD iG35 - and, as usual, with a small gap in price with the "bridge": sold for 5100 rubles. The place in the price list is close to that occupied in our test, but the price / quality ratio is overpriced: 6.1.

Hankook's novelty i-Pike RS is sold in a completely different price category (4500 rubles). A worthy tire that takes a big step forward from the previous model and scored 886 points. Almost close to the milestone of 900 points, which distinguishes very good tires from others. The price / quality index is 5.1 - it's worth taking a closer look.

Nearby, no less worthy Russian-made Nordman 4 is offered for only 4400 rubles, that is, for two-thirds of the price of the leading older brother. Meanwhile, in our final list, "Nordman" occupies the fifth (!) Position. The price / quality ratio beckons - 4.8. Good offer.

For 4000 rubles. you will find Cordiant Polar 2. The place in the price rating corresponds to the situation we received, although the price / quality ratio (5.0) is less attractive than that of Nordman.

The parade of popular tires "Kama-Euro 519" closes up: only 3500 rubles, - the last place in our test. Buying a tire with a price / performance ratio equal to 4.3 will not be ruinous for the most modest budget.

FRICTION TIRE RATING 195 / 65R15

1-9_no_copyright

They were born in 2010, they are participating in our test for the first time.

Weak on the ice in all directions - acceleration, cornering and braking. On the snow they are more agreeable: they hold turns worse than others, accelerate poorly, but brake well - on a par with Nokian! Directional stability on a snowy road leaves much to be desired: the car noticeably prowls, demanding steering. Low information content interferes with maintaining the desired direction - the steering wheel is almost empty by effort. In fast corners, the first reaction is good, although the steering angles are too large. The transition to sliding is soft, the set trajectory is kept, however, here, too, the driver will be grieved by an unnecessarily light, empty steering wheel.

They do not like snowdrifts - if necessary, it is better to overcome them on the move, without turning and stopping. They refuse to change direction, moving away is possible only vnatyag. When slipping, they strive to bury themselves, reluctantly get out back. On an asphalt straight line, the car goes exactly when accelerating. It floats at a constant speed, requiring relentless adjustments, to which it reacts with an unpleasant steering of the rear axle.

Braking on a dry road is weak, on a wet one - the worst. Uncomfortable: they make a loud noise, with increasing speed they get stronger. They transmit shocks from medium and large road irregularities, vibrate on small ones. Fuel consumption is average at any speed.

It was created in 2008, appeared on our market in 2009, but the ZR takes part in the test for the first time.

On ice, lateral grip and acceleration are at their weakest. The braking is average, and it pleases. But on the snow, both braking and acceleration are worse than those of all other test participants, although in turns they hold on to the road average. On a snow-covered straight line, they prowl a little, take the car away from a given direction, pulling it into deeper snow. The handling is mediocre: the car does not obey the steering wheel well and strives to straighten the trajectory, sliding out of the bend. Skid occurs only if provoked, but it compensates well.

In deep snow it moves uncertainly, and only with a certain degree of slipping. Refuses to turn, slides into a rut or where there is less resistance. It goes smoothly on the asphalt, but strains when adjusting the direction. At low angles, the steering wheel is very sluggish, but as the steering angle increases, the car abruptly changes direction by a greater angle than required.

Braking is stable on dry and wet asphalt, braking distances are medium. Quite comfortable: quiet on any road, only slightly itchy on the comb. They transmit jerks and small shocks from small irregularities. They do not consume excess fuel, but they also do not allow saving.

5-7_no_copyright

Production and sales started in 2009.

On the ice, the behavior is unbalanced - average acceleration, weak cornering grip and the weakest braking. But on the snow, everything is smooth, the grip is average in all directions. On a snow-covered road, they seem to carry the car smoothly, and the steering wheel at "zero" is tight, understandable, but the tailgate walks from side to side, and this does not give confidence. The behavior is unstable when cornering. In the initial phase, an unpleasant drift often occurs, which can be compensated for by adding gas. When you turn the steering wheel, its information content sharply decreases, literally falls. How it will end, no one knows - you have to deal with either drift or skid.

The same uncertainty is in deep snow. They move well only on the verge of slipping. Slipping is especially dangerous at the moment of starting: it leads to burial. On the other hand, maneuvers are given without stress, the car is selected confidently in reverse. On the asphalt they run smoothly, the reactions when adjusting the direction are clear. But here, too, the rear axle does not allow the driver to relax, steering after the steering action. This imparts lagging oversteer to the vehicle.

Braking on dry and wet roads is weak. Tires cannot be called quiet - they emit an increased rumble. They transmit shocks to the body from medium and large irregularities, vibrate on small ones. Fuel consumption is above average at any speed.

It was created in 2009, then it began to be sold in Russia, in 2011 it was modernized.

On ice, braking and lateral traction are average and acceleration is weak. On the snow, on the contrary, the acceleration is average, the braking is weak, and the transverse grip properties are the lowest, on a par with the Viatti. On the snow-covered road they walk smoothly, not reacting to the different thickness of the snow blanket - the directional stability of the Pirelli is traditionally good. The handling is also without remarks: the steering wheel is tight, understandable, the reactions are clear. The transition to sliding is soft, the trajectory can be set and adjusted both with the steering wheel and with the gas. There is practically no skid, in the limit the whole car begins to slide outward.

They do not want to overcome deep snow. They move forward reluctantly, even trying to bury themselves in motion. Well, at least they get out in reverse. On the asphalt they resemble summer tires - a tight steering wheel in the near-zero zone, excellent information content and clear adherence to a given direction.

Braking is surprisingly weak on wet and weakest on dry asphalt. The noise is high, the vibration load is high - the company pays little attention to comfort. They roll not very willingly - the fuel consumption is increased at any speed.

7-5_no_copyright

They were born in 2009 and have been on the market since 2010.

They are deservedly included in the top five. They differ from those who were left behind in a good balance: all characteristics, if not leadership, but even on any of the surfaces that you meet in winter on our roads. For example, on ice both in the longitudinal and transverse directions showed average results. Not so good on snow: acceleration and lateral grip are average, but weak braking is a little let down. At high speed, they run smoothly in the snow, but there is not enough information on the steering wheel. Confidence is also lacking when cornering. Upon entering, a noticeable delay in reactions forces the steering wheel to be turned unnecessarily. For this reason, in the initial phase of the turn, the car goes into demolition, demanding to release the gas. And on the turning arc it strives to slip into a skid, which, fortunately, is easily parried.

They overcome snowdrifts without stress, go forward confidently, do not bury themselves when starting off, but they do not like to skid much. They scour the asphalt slightly on lateral irregularities, they respond to steering with a slight delay. As for the noise, there are no complaints, even on rough asphalt they roll quietly. But on convex irregularities they shake the car decently and transmit vibrations from seams, cracks and microroughnesses of the road.

The brakes are medium, showing no preference for dry or wet surfaces. At a speed of 60 km / h they help to save fuel, at 90 km / h they look average from this point of view.

10-5_no_copyright

11-4_no_copyright

The model is the same age as "Goodyear", created in 2009, has been sold in our market since 2010.

Good on ice in acceleration, braking and lateral grip are only average. On snow, acceleration and lateral traction are average, and braking is weak. Only Yokohama stops worse. They walk smoothly along the snowy road. The experts noted not only a confident retention of direction, but also an informative rudder, as well as immediate reactions to course corrections. In fast corners, speed is limited by gentle front axle drift, which is eliminated by turning the steering wheel or slowing down slightly. The information content of the steering wheel is high.

Drifts are reluctant to overcome, move forward uncertainly, turn badly. They move in reverse more confidently, allowing them to get out of the snow trap. On the asphalt they go almost evenly, they scour a little on transverse irregularities, and when adjusting the direction they are a little late.

They brake well on wet surfaces, but they stop best on dry ones. They are quite comfortable - they walk on any surface softly and quietly, except perhaps a little hiss on a snowy road. Fuel consumption is average at 60 km / h, and increased at 90 km / h.

12-3_no_copyright

Produced since 2008, at the same time they began to be sold on the Russian market.

During this time, the mixture has been modernized more than once. On ice, they show average results in braking and lateral traction, and accelerate well. But they cling to the snow best of all: they were in the lead in the corresponding exercises. But directional stability let us down a little: slight difficulties appear when trying to correct the direction of movement. With each small turn of the steering wheel, the driver is a little annoying with a slow reaction and a shallow but prolonged skid. In fast corners, delays in reactions and low information content of the steering wheel interfere, which leads to an increasing drift with prolonged stabilization.

In deep snow they turn a car into a tractor. They move very confidently, move and maneuver in any modes, without fear of slipping. They float slightly on the asphalt, are susceptible to the influence of a crosswind, noticeably lag behind the steering wheel for corrective actions. They transmit vibrations from small irregularities, road joints pass rigidly, making the car shudder. They make noise, crunch and buzz unpleasantly in slippery corners when they find something to catch on to.

They are the best brakes on wet asphalt. And on dry grounds they show good results. At a speed of 60 km / h, the most economical ones (along with Goodyear, Michelin and Nokian), at 90 km / h, do not require too much.

14-3_no_copyright

15–2_no_copyright

Created in 2008, since then they have been sold.

Good balance of grip on all surfaces found on winter roads. On ice, the grip properties are even, regardless of actions and modes - in a corner, during acceleration, during braking. On snow, lateral grip and acceleration are good, but braking is average. They walk in a straight line, without a hint of a desire to evade a given direction, they accurately respond to the steering wheel when adjusting the course. In the corners, they behave clearly, without problems or surprises. Bends are clearly prescribed, allow you to adjust the radius by steering or changing the fuel supply.

They feel at home in the snowdrifts. The sensations are similar to those that you get from Continental. They row confidently, get under way in any modes, maneuver without difficulty. On the asphalt they run smoothly, they win over with clear reactions comparable to the behavior of summer tires.

They brake well, regardless of whether the asphalt is dry or wet. Comfortable: the tractor track and rough ice are only slightly sounded. There are also no comments about the smoothness of the course. They are economical at city speeds, do not abuse fuel even at 90 km / h.

16–1_no_copyright

Created in 2008, since then they have been modernized almost every year.

On the ice - adhesion properties unattainable for competitors in the test in all disciplines: in braking, during acceleration and on a circle. On the snow, the grip is very good: during acceleration and when cornering, the best, on a par with the Continental, is slightly inferior in braking efficiency - the second result. On a straight "white" road, they walk smoothly, without requiring adjustment. In terms of handling, they are similar to the Bridgestone and Pirelli: equally clear reactions, the car obediently changes its trajectory when manipulating the steering wheel or gas. Equally good stabilization after rider-induced slips.

It is better to overcome deep snow by drowning the gas pedal to the floor. True, in this mode you run the risk of getting into such a snowdrift, from where you cannot get out without a shovel or outside help. Although during the tests it was not needed - the car always went in reverse. They walk smoothly on the asphalt, but experts noted slight delays in course correction.

They brake well on wet surfaces and medium on dry surfaces. As for comfort, there are some minor remarks - the noise level on an uneven road is slightly increased, vibrations from small irregularities are transmitted. At any speed, fuel consumption is the lowest in the test.

Created in 2008, since then it has been sold. In 2010, the composition of the rubber compound was modernized.

Nevertheless, against the background of other winter tires "Kama-Euro 519" looks weak. On the ice, the adhesion properties are very low, worse only in the "Kordiant". On snow, grip is also more than modest. The only consolation is that the balance of grip properties is quite even in all directions: it slows down, accelerates and holds the road in corners weakly. It is better to drive slowly on a snow-covered road: the car prowls from side to side. In a slippery corner, the behavior is ragged: the car breaks down first into demolition, then into a skid. More or less obeys the steering wheel only on the packed snow. On ice, even at low speed, it breaks into a skid. Glides on any surface for a long time. Very large steering angles and significant delays in reactions interfere with keeping the car under control.

Moves not quite confidently in deep snow. At the moment of starting, it is better not to slip. With the wheels turned to the side, it gets under way better than straight. Reverse is selected without problems. On the asphalt it prowls heavily along the road. Very large steering angles, significant lag and low information content, as well as unpleasant steering of the rear axle interfere with the direction correction.

Braking on wet pavement is weak, on dry - the weakest. On the ice and asphalt, the tread is howling loudly. Very hard - they transmit shocks from medium irregularities and vibrations from small ones.

We saw the light in 2009, but appeared in our test for the first time.

Excessively recessed spikes make the tire practically helpless on the ice - neither accelerate, nor turn, nor stop. It holds a little better in the snow. Lateral traction is closer to average, although acceleration is weak and braking is weak. The course on the snow is fairly flat, with only slight yawing with depth changes. On ice, the grip properties are subjectively assessed as very poor. Do not turn the steering wheel sharply, otherwise the car refuses to turn. If, nevertheless, it was possible to turn, a skid awaits on the arc. On snow, the speed is limited by a sharp break into a skid. Insufficient information content of the steering wheel and small delays in reactions prevent it from being countered.

In deep snow, they move not quite confidently. There are no pronounced preferences in driving modes, they pull the car well with a slight slip. They are confidently reversing. They walk smoothly on the asphalt, but when adjusting the direction, light steering of the rear axle and insufficient steering information interfere.

Braking is average on dry and wet roads. They do not indulge in comfort: they buzz annoyingly loudly, shake the body on convex irregularities, push on medium ones, transmit vibrations to small ones. Fuel consumption is higher at 60 km / h, above average at 90 km / h. The spikes are not held very reliably: during the tests, the protrusion value has changed by three tens.

Quite fresh tires, created in 2010, have been sold in Russia since that time.

But in our test they lit up for the first time. On ice, grip in all directions is average. On the snow, they behave less confidently: braking and lateral grip are weak, acceleration is the most sluggish, on a par with the "Bridgestone". They prowl a little on a snowy road. In cornering, insufficiently high grip properties are affected - the car completely slides outward.

Snowdrifts are not for these tires: they get stuck in deep snow, as they say, out of the blue. When starting off, they fall through, strive to bury themselves. They move uncertainly in reverse. They drive smoothly on ideal asphalt, but this is not often found on our roads. Therefore, constant directional corrections are required, which are complicated by delays in reactions and unpleasant steering of the rear axle.

On a dry road, the car stops reluctantly, and braking on a wet one is the weakest. Very hard: Impact from unevenness is transmitted to the floor and seat, vibrations occur on the steering wheel. They make a loud noise and hum with thorns. Average fuel consumption at any speed. The thorns hold securely, there are no losses, but the size of the protrusion is more than modest: such thorns cannot reliably catch on ice and dense snow.

They were created in 2009, but appeared on the Russian market with a delay, in 2010.

On ice, the grip properties are average in braking, cornering and acceleration. They ride on snow less confidently than on ice. Braking is weak, acceleration is the most sluggish, like that of Yokohama, lateral grip is also the lowest. They prowl a little on a snowy road, but they don't leave the trajectory. Slow reactions to driving. In fast corners, speed is limited by long drifts. When sliding by the front axle, the car does not respond to steering turns.

In deep snow, he confidently starts and moves, but only vnatyag. As soon as the wheels turn a little, traction is lost and the car immediately stops. They walk on the asphalt exactly, keep the given course. But when it is necessary to correct the direction of movement, the driver is strained by the steering of the rear axle and the insufficiently informative steering wheel.

When measuring the stopping distance, "Yokohama" smelled again. Like hers, braking is weak on both dry and wet surfaces. They are not comfortable enough: they transmit shocks from irregularities to the body, they make a loud noise with the tread and spikes, even at high speed. Fuel consumption is higher at 60 km / h, above average at 90 km / h. The protrusion of the spines and the rate of increase in the protrusion are normal. There are no losses during the test.

A novelty on the Russian market. As they say, in the heat of the heat.

On ice, the grip is high, the balance is reasonable. Braking and lateral grip are good, acceleration is average. The snow is also quite strong. Longitudinal adhesion properties are good, transverse ones are of medium level. On a snow-covered road, they prowl slightly, but they do not leave the trajectory. Insufficient information content of the steering wheel and a slight delay in adjusting the direction of travel were noted. Slip stalls in corners are a bit harsh, the car glides longer than we would like, but the traction recovery is soft and smooth.

In deep snow, they move not quite confidently; when slipping at the start, they show a tendency to self-digging. They are confidently reversing. On the asphalt, the car is forced to float in the lane. A wide "zero", delays in reactions, steering of the rear axle and insufficient information content interfere.

The brakes are weak, both on dry asphalt and on wet ones. Comfort Notes: Minor vibrations from minor bumps and increased overall noise from studded tires. At a speed of 60 km / h, fuel consumption is below average, at 90 km / h - the most economical. The amount of protrusion of the spines and the rate of increase in the protrusion are normal. During the test, there was no loss of thorns.

The oldest tires in our test.

They have been produced since 2006, since the same time they have been sold in Russia. On the ice, they can boast of a good balance: they brake and turn well, accelerate moderately. On snow, grip in any direction is average - also good. On a snow-covered straight line, they walk smoothly, without requiring steering. In turns on ice and rolled snow, they delight with clear reactions and a very soft transition to sliding. However, on loose snow, a sharp skid occurs on the arc, requiring clear parrying actions from the driver.

They do not like deep snow, they move confidently only on freshly fallen powder. If the snow is a little denser, packed, you can only drive vnatyag, without slipping. On an asphalt straight line, the car goes smoothly, reactions to a change in course are immediate, except that the information content on the steering wheel is almost lacking.

Braking is brilliant: both on wet and dry asphalt the tires stop perfectly. The background noise is heightened, as in most "studs", and there are no complaints about the smoothness of the ride - all road irregularities are well smoothed out. Most voracious at any speed. The amount of stud protrusion and the rate of its growth during the tests are optimal. Lost a couple of spikes from the front wheels.

Produced since 2009, sold since the same time.

The tread pattern is the heritage of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4 tire. They differ from it in the compound composition and in the studs with a round core. They are participating in our tests for the first time. On ice, braking and lateral grip are average, acceleration is good. On snow, the behavior is more confident: longitudinal grip properties are good, and lateral grip is the most reliable. Both the front axle and the rear axle prowl along a snow-covered straight line, responding to the density of the snow. At small angles of rotation of the steering wheel, its insufficient information content was noted. You can drive quickly in corners - the reactions are clear, the behavior is understandable. Speed is limited by slight skidding, which is easily compensated for by steering or adding throttle.

They are not afraid of snowdrifts: it is enough to add gas, and the car will go wherever the steering wheel is turned. Reverse is selected without problems. They walk smoothly on the asphalt, but when adjusting the course, a delay in reactions and an empty steering wheel are noticeable.

The brakes are average on dry asphalt, and good on wet ones. They make a loud noise with the tread and spikes, especially from 40 to 60 km / h. Smoothness can be called good, do not be small vibrations from small irregularities. Average fuel consumption at any speed. The amount of stud protrusion and its growth during the tests are close to the optimum. There are no lost thorns.

They were born in 2007. Sold in Russia since 2008.

From time to time they renew the design, the spikes and the composition of the mixture, leaving the "face" unchanged. Recent innovations have allowed Carving to join the leading group. On ice, longitudinal grip is average and lateral grip is highest. On snow, grip is good in all directions. On a snowy road, they hold a course perfectly. The car moves like an arrow and reacts sensitively even to small turns of a dense, highly informative steering wheel. Turns are prescribed with a twinkle. Clear, understandable control, sensitive reactions to the slightest turn of the steering wheel. In the limit, the speed is limited by a soft and smooth skid, which can be extinguished with a small addition of gas or by turning the steering wheel. The glide is fast but stabilizes gently.

Drifts are easily overcome, they do not bury themselves at the start, they drive and slip, and with skidding, they easily maneuver. They walk smoothly on the asphalt, a clear "zero" helps to correct the direction.

Braking on wet surfaces is medium, on dry surfaces well. Traditionally, they do not indulge in comfort: they make noise, as if the plane is flying by, shake it on any irregularities, as if pumped over. Most likely, the low level of comfort is a kind of payment for the pleasure of driving on a winter road. Fuel consumption is average at any speed. The size of the protrusion of the spikes and the rate of their growth during the tests are optimal. There are no losses.

They have been offered on the Russian market since 2009.

Today's leaders are the only ones using round core spikes. On ice, longitudinal grip is average, lateral grip is good. On snow, the layout is slightly different: the longitudinal grip is good, and the lateral grip is of the middle hand. On a snow-covered road, the car is carried evenly and stably. Reactions during course correction - no comments. When cornering, the behavior is clear and understandable. Speed is most often limited by soft drift, but the car responds well to steering and tries to maintain the set trajectory.

Even in sliding, it does not get out of control of the driver. You can not only pierce through the snowdrifts, but also easily maneuver in them, stop and get under way again. If he stopped the car, he backed up a little and drove on. It is always possible to get out in reverse. On the pavement, directional stability is good, "zero" is clear, the steering wheel is tight - the tires are almost like summer tires.

They brake well on dry asphalt, and average on wet ones. The noise level is increased, on hard surfaces the rumble of spikes is clearly audible, especially in the range of 60–90 km / h. Smooth running without remarks - they well dampen any irregularities. Fuel is saved in all speed modes - at both 60 and 90 km / h. The protrusion of the spines and the rate of change in the size of the protrusion are normal. During the running-in and testing, not a single spike was lost.

A relatively fresh model that appeared in 2010.

Since the same year, it has been sold in Russia. It differs from other tires in the "diamond" shape of the spikes. On ice, traction is good in all directions. On snow, it's the same - both longitudinal and lateral grip are high. On a snowy road, they allow you to go quickly, they carry the car smoothly. But the information content on the steering wheel is not enough. When cornering, front axle drift prevails. A drift, if any, appears softly and smoothly and is eliminated without much difficulty.

In deep snow they go well only with intensive slipping, but this mode is not very informative. If you bury yourself, reverse gear will not help. They walk smoothly on the asphalt, the steering wheel is tight, the "zero" is clear, the reactions when adjusting the direction are immediate.

The brakes on wet asphalt are better than others, on dry they show average results, on a par with "Gislaved". They make a loud noise with spikes on hard surfaces - both on ice and on asphalt, especially loudly from 70 to 90 km / h. Quite hard: they transmit vibrations from road irregularities to the floor of the body, seat and steering wheel. Average fuel consumption at any speed. The protrusion of the studs is within the optimum value. The studs are very secure in the rubber.

Introduced at the end of 2008, sold since 2009.

Constantly undergoing renewal, which allows them to stay in the lead. On ice they showed the best longitudinal grip, lateral - average. On snow - the best acceleration, good braking and grip when cornering. On a snow-covered road, they walk smoothly, without remarks. The steering wheel is tight, the reactions are clear. When cornering, speed is limited by gentle, assisting skidding, which is most easily eliminated with a little throttle. Even in sliding, the car obeys the driver's commands, restoring the trajectory gently and smoothly.

They move confidently in deep snow, maneuver well, and get under way without the desire to bury themselves. Any mode: from professional vnatyag movement, without turning the wheels, to "blonde" "gas to the floor". Reverse very well. On the asphalt, the movement is smooth, but when corrected, the rear axle steers unpleasantly.

Braking on dry asphalt is weak, on wet - average. Comfort is not ideal: clear noise of spikes on asphalt and smooth ice, shocks from road irregularities, primarily convex ones. Economical at all speeds. The amount of protrusion of the spines is close to the reasonable limit. Nevertheless, the average protrusion during testing has changed by only 0.1 mm, which means that the spikes in the rubber are held securely.

New, preparing for sale this year.

We could not calculate the final scores, because in braking on the snow Ice Arctic beat the best serial tire, which we took as a "base" in the calculations. On ice, longitudinal grip is good, and lateral grip is average. On snow - super braking, very good acceleration and average lateral grip. On a snowy road, they prowl slightly, reacting with a delay to the direction correction. In fast corners, the behavior is ambiguous. In the initial phase, at the stage of entering the bend, there is a noticeable delay in the reactions, leading to the drift of the front axle. After the adhesion is restored, already on the arc, there is a high likelihood of a skid, which has to be compensated for both by the steering wheel and by adding gas at the same time. After sliding, the restoration of adhesion occurs quite abruptly, provoking a skid that shoots off in the other direction.

There is no concept of "deep snow" for these tires. Helping the car to get out of the snow captivity was never needed. On the asphalt they float noticeably from side to side, requiring constant adjustments. Very wide "zero", steering delays.

The brakes on wet asphalt are good, on dry - medium. They push on medium irregularities, buzz hard with a tread and spikes. The amount of protrusion of the spikes is at the limit. However, the change in the protrusion during the tests in only one "ten" indicates that the spikes are firmly fixed.

"Michelin" is a French company, one of the world leaders in the production of automobile tires. It has about 70 enterprises around the world, as well as 5 research technology centers (in France, the USA and Japan) and 5 test sites (in France, the USA and Spain).
In addition to the main brand of the same name, the Michelin group of companies owns other well-known brands such as Kleber, Goodrich, Wolber, Riken, Tyremaster, Uniroyal, Taurus and others.
Site: www.michelin.ru

Michelin also has a tire manufacturing plant in Russia. It is located in the village of Davydovo, Orekhovo-Zuevsky District, Moscow Region. The production capacity there is not the largest - about 2 million tires a year, but it is there that the only tire studding workshop in the company is located, in which all the tires produced by Michelin in Europe are studded.
In Russia, Michelin tires are sold either of our own production, or produced at the European factories of the company in Italy and Hungary.

"Michelin X-Ice North 3" Is a new winter studded tire that incorporates a wide variety of innovative technologies developed by Michelin. Most of them are combined into one complex called “smart stud” (Smart Stud System) and includes:

  • Thermoactive rubber compound, which is used as the inner layer of the tread and which is capable of changing its elasticity depending on the ambient temperature: at high temperatures it becomes soft and the studs seem to be pressed into the tread, significantly improving grip on asphalt; at low temperatures, it becomes stiff, making the very fixation of the studs more rigid and thereby increasing traction on an icy surface.
  • Ice Powder Remover technology designed to remove ice crumbs and is a system of 6 wells that absorb this ice crumbs around each spike.
  • The design of the spike itself, which looks like a cylinder with a tapered tip, which is installed on a wide base, which ensures reliable fixation of the spike.

The tread pattern of the Michelin X-Ice North 3 has received an increased number of grip edges for improved grip on snowy roads. The angle of the drainage channels was also changed, which increased resistance to aquaplaning and slashplenning. These tires use the new Flex-Ice 3 rubber compound, which contains a proportionate natural and synthetic rubber compound to achieve improved wet grip. In addition, it contains silicon additives that contribute to wear resistance.
To strengthen the tire carcass, the IronFlex technology was used, which consists in the use of an additional layer of steel filaments and provides additional impact resistance.

Today we will give an answer to a topical question in the circles of motorists: “What are the best winter tires in the 2013-2014 season?”, And also point out the advantages and disadvantages of each model.

The rating includes tires of imported and domestic production in the size 185/65 (R14) and 195/65 (R15). So let's go.
Rating of the best winter tires 2013

No. 6. Yokohama IceGuard IG30 (Japan)

Yokohama IceGuard IG30 tire - performs well when driving on ice and snow. Although, in comparison with the leaders of the rating, cars with these tires are much worse in acceleration, braking and handling on ice. On snow, tires provide good acceleration, but when driving fast, the car behaves unbalanced - it is constantly worn, and efforts must be made to stabilize.
Less high performance on wet asphalt, especially when cornering. So, when turning, the car can go into drift off the trajectory rather than into a skid. Although if this happens, the car remains under control. On dry pavement, the braking distance is above average and the steering response is quite distinct. There are no comments here.
Benefits of Yokohama IceGuard IG30:
Traction on snow Disadvantages of Yokohama IceGuard IG30: Stability on snow Traction on asphalt

No. 5. Vredestein SnowTrac 3 (Holland)

The Vredestein SnowTrac 3 is also more for “mild European winters”. Tires do not perform well on ice or snow when braking and harsh maneuvers. On ice, the tires easily slip, and when cornering, they can demolish the front axle, and when trying to stabilize, they can skid the rear axle. But on dry and wet asphalt, the figures are quite high. And we can say with confidence that in this field she has no equal, among other rivals of the rating. A car with Vredestein SnowTrac 3 tires has excellent braking performance on wet asphalt and just as well on dry asphalt. The tire is durable enough, but noticeably reduces the roll of the car in neutral gear.
The advantages of the Vredestein SnowTrac 3:
Excellent handling on asphalt
Skid resistance on dry and wet asphalt Disadvantages of Vredestein SnowTrac 3:
Low properties on ice and snow
Roll Resistance

No. 4. Fluda Kristal Montero 3 (Slovenia)

The winter tires Fluda Kristal Montero 3 showed good results when tested on dry and wet asphalt. They provide good handling and short braking distances. Also, these tires are resistant to skidding during sharp turns of the steering wheel. But cross-country ability on snow and ice is clearly not her strong point. On a track covered with ice, you constantly get the feeling that the car does not react to steering turns and intends to drift, and when cornering into a skid. On the snow, the situation is the same, although there is no need to complain about traction and braking distance - everything is fine with that.
Benefits of Fluda Kristal Montero 3:
Performance on wet asphalt
Braking properties on dry asphalt Disadvantages of Fluda Kristal Montero 3: Grip and handling on ice
No. 3. Good Year Ultra Grip Ice + (Slovenia)

Good Year Ultra Grip Ice + is the first winter tire of the Scandinavian group, which shows good results on snow and ice: handling and braking are average, but there are no complaints about acceleration dynamics. On snow this tire leads in traction and braking qualities, but on dry asphalt the characteristics are much lower. On wet pavement, braking performance is significantly reduced, although the handling is at a sufficient level. Good Year Ultra Grip Ice + tires are quiet and wear resistant.

Benefits of Good Year Ultra Grip Ice +:
Braking and traction on ice
Acoustic comfort Disadvantages of Good Year Ultra Grip Ice +: Braking properties on wet asphalt
# 2. Michelin X-Ice Xi2 (Spain)

The friction tire of the famous Spanish manufacturer Michelin X-Ice Xi2 has shown excellent results in winter conditions. On ice - this is the shortest braking distance and good handling, on snow - traction properties that ensure good cross-country ability. The tire behaves slightly worse on asphalt, where a slightly slower reaction of the car to sharp turns of the steering wheel is felt. This is caused by a large number of channels in the tread. You can hardly call it the most comfortable tire, but the X-Ice Xi2 is quite resistant to wear and is great for use on our roads.
Michelin X-Ice Xi2 advantages:
Braking properties on ice
Michelin X-Ice Xi2 Disadvantages: Average performance on wet asphalt
# 1. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (Russia)

So, number one is Nokian Hakkapeliitta R. Oddly enough, Russian-made tires lead the rating of the best winter tires 2012-2013. While an update to the Hakkapeliitta R line is expected, demand for the current model is still strong. On ice this tire has no equal - it is grippy and provides good traction, short braking distances, and predictable handling. On the snow, the car quickly and clearly reacts to steering turns and there are no complaints about passing other tests. The Hakkapeliitta R, both on dry and wet asphalt, is stable during sharp maneuvers and has a good response. Its only drawback is its durability, which will probably be improved in the new Nokian range of tires.
The advantages of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R:
Balanced characteristics
Braking properties on all surfaces Disadvantages of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R:
Wear resistance
