On most of these engines, capital is required for 150,000 km, the cost of which is equal to the cost of a good used foreign car (in an unofficial service, they will ask for about 6000 USD for repairs). If you want to buy a new engine, you will have to pay about $ 20,000 for it.

All power units do not have an oil dipstick, so you cannot check the oil level and condition yourself. You also need to know that the maintenance of the car is not carried out by mileage or by time, like most cars. The bore and stroke, as well as the compression ratio, are the same as on the N54, but the direct injection has also been preserved. The main differences are in the application of the Valvetronic timing system on the N55 (it simply did not fit on the N54), the rejection of piezo injectors in favor of electromagnetic, and also the rejection of a combination of two turbines in favor of one, but with two impellers - TwinScroll.
- It is interesting that electromagnetic injectors cost about the same, but in practice they turned out to be more stable in terms of resource than piezo. The service life of the injection pump is on average higher than that of the N54, but it is also unpredictable - there are cases of its death in 120 thousand, someone drives 200+.
- On the N55, the crankcase ventilation becomes very dirty, because of which the engine can start to eat up oil when the piston rings are in perfect condition.
- The top xDrive50i, both before and after restyling, come with a 4.4-liter V8 with the N63B44 index. Like the N55, it has a twin-scroll turbine, and the output is 408 hp. The cylinder block is silumin. And this is one of the most problematic engines of modern BMWs.
- Until 2011, the N63 had a problem with the piston compression rings, which were sagging and oil leaking. The connecting rod bearings were also weak - they were also updated along with the crankshaft in 2011.
- All BMW engines are very thermally loaded, and the N63 generally breaks all records. The coking of the valves and the tanning of the valve stem seals occurs very quickly here, and after the cylinder head is re-installed, when the "heads" are re-installed, it is elementary to roll up the thread of the delicate silumin block, which makes the joint begin to flow violently. If you see smudges, it can be very bad.
- The direct injection system was constantly being improved: there are at least 3 revisions of the injection pump and 13 (!) Revisions of the piezo injectors. Some of the nozzles did not just stop working, but mercilessly leaked, which in the most advanced cases led to a water hammer with subsequent deformation of the connecting rod in one or several cylinders at once. The conclusion is simple: you need a high-pressure fuel pump and injectors, preferably the latest revision.
- The VANOS phase shifters on the N63, of course, love to leak. And it can also rip off plastic covers from them and chew with a timing chain. The chain, fortunately, does not fly off from this, but lumps of plastic in the cylinder head are not the best option. Diagnostics of the couplings is required.
- The turbines on the N63 are located in the collapse of the block and operate in hellish conditions at temperatures over 300 degrees. The fragility of the turbine cooling pump, as well as the coking of oil inside the oil supply pipes, works to reduce their resource. As a result, the turbines overheat and run dry. In this case, the resource may not exceed 40-50 thousand.
- Against this background, the rest of the problem areas of the N63 seem to be trifles, however: the throttle valves wedge, temperature sensors die, the cooling system pipes and vacuum pipes melt from the hellish heat, and in general everything plastic under the hood does not live long.
- The diesel line consists of two 3.0 inline sixes. M57TU2D30 in two variants of forcing went on machines until spring 2010: xDrive30d (235 hp) and xDrive35d (286 hp). Then, on the 30d, a motor of the new N57D30OL family (245 hp) appeared, and instead of the 35d, the xDrive40d modification appeared with a 306-horsepower N57D30TOP. All these diesels have a lot in common, even if we leave out of the brackets the configuration of the cylinders and the volume. The timing drive here is chain (about 200-250 thousand is the resource of the chain), and the injectors are piezoelectric (they last longer than gasoline ones, 150 thousand or more). Turbines operate at gentle loads, so they run more than 200-250 thousand.
- Later versions of the M57 are already devoid of the problem of early wear of the intake manifold flaps, and in general the engine is surprisingly reliable. On N57, all other things being equal, injection pumps and injectors are more capricious to the quality of fuel, and the crankshaft pulley with a rubber damper is also falling apart - do not forget to check.
