The electric fan of the engine cooling system of the VAZ-2114 car is switched on only by a signal from the coolant temperature sensor. But the connection does not take place directly, but through a relay. This electrical circuit is protected by two fuses. If the arrow of the temperature indicator has crept into the red zone of the scale, then turn off the gas, turn on the interior heater fan at full power and look for a place to stop.

The serviceability of one of the fuses located in the mounting block and protecting the electrical circuit of the fan can be checked by simply pressing the beep button. If the signal works, then everything is in order with the fuse, since it also protects the electrical circuit of the sound signal. In case of its malfunction, we open the mounting block, look for a 20 amp fuse F5, but before replacing it, you need to find the reason for its failure, otherwise the newly supplied one will burn out in the same way.

To check the second fuse, you will have to remove the console trim on the passenger side. There you will see three relays and next to each of them, there is a fuse. You will need to pull out the middle to check. And again, if it burned out, you need to look for the cause of this phenomenon. With a working fuse, we check the middle relay, since the fan motor is switched on through it. After pulling it out of the socket, inspect its contacts for oxidation. You can check it with an ohmmeter, if it is not there or do not know how to use it, you will have to try to replace it with a serviceable one.

Next, open the hood, disconnect the block with wires from the fan motor and, if there is a pair of wires, connect it directly to the battery. If the fan starts working, then the cause of the malfunction will have to be looked for in the temperature sensor, or the relay and another fuse located next to this relay. Well, if the fan, when connected directly, does not work, then the fault will have to be looked for in it.

The fan may also not work due to the failure of the temperature sensor for turning on the fan. It is located on the cylinder head, above the thermostat. If there is no ohmmeter, we check the method of its replacement. Only the fan switch should not be confused with a sensor working on the coolant temperature gauge.

The fan is used to generate air currents that are directed to the motor radiator. This is necessary in order to cool the liquid that circulates through it.

If the car is moving at high speed, the fan is not particularly required, since the motor receives all the necessary cooling from the oncoming air flows. But when the car goes into slow or idle mode with the engine running, the propeller role becomes indispensable.

Turning on occurs after the corresponding signal is sent from the electronic control unit. The ECU, in turn, learns about the need to turn on the fan from the temperature sensor. The switch-on threshold is 103-105 degrees Celsius.

In the case of the VAZ 2114, the fan (propeller) is located in the engine compartment on the back of the radiator.

Why doesn't it work

There are several reasons why the propeller may not turn on when the temperature situation requires it:

  • The fan electric motor, that is, the drive, is out of order;

If the fan itself is the cause of all the problems, it is not necessary to change it, since in some cases it can be repaired. Failures are often associated with the bearing or brushes.

  • Socket wrench 8 mm;
  • 10 mm socket wrench.

  1. Park the car on a level surface, apply the handbrake. Just in case, you can put additional supports under the wheels of your VAZ 2114. Precautions never go wrong.
  2. Lift the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  3. Using a 10 mm wrench, the fasteners of the air filter housing are dismantled.
  4. Using a screwdriver, loosen the clamp from the air duct located on the MAF sensor. So you will be able to remove the corrugation. Do it.
  5. The air filter housing cover has self-tapping screws that hold it in place. They are unscrewed with a screwdriver, after which the filter component is removed from its seat.
  6. Now take an 8 mm key and use it to dismantle the air intake fasteners, and then remove the air intake itself.
  7. Now with a key of 10 and 8 millimeters, the fastening nuts on the fan casing are removed along the entire perimeter. There you will find a total of 6 nuts.
  8. Disconnect the connector from the wire from the connector of your broken fan.
  9. Remove the fan shroud, while grasping the drive, that is, the electric motor.
  10. Armed with a 10 mm wrench, you need to dismantle the three mounting bolts that hold the electric motor on the casing.
  11. Install the new fan in place of the old device.
  12. We return all fasteners to their places, connect the connectors, and carry out the assembly in the reverse order.

After installing new equipment, be sure to turn on the engine and let it run for a while. Until the fan turns on and the propeller starts spinning. This will take no more than 5 minutes. Soon, the fan should shut down by itself. If it does not stop, turn off the engine. Repeat the experiment.

It rarely turns out that after replacement the fan still does not work. Even if this happened, this is due to two possible events - other elements of the cooling system were damaged, or you purchased a non-working fan. Alas, given the number of fakes on the market, the second option cannot be ruled out.

An electric motor with an impeller on a shaft is mounted inside a rectangular metal frame, with which it is attached to the back of the radiator. The circuit for switching on the VAZ 2110 cooling fan on carburetor and injection vehicles is different. On cars with a carburetor engine, a thermo-bimetallic sensor TM-108 is used for this, and on cars with an injection engine, the control is carried out by the controller.

Attention: the order of relays and fuses can be arbitrary, we are guided by the color of the wires. Therefore, we find a relay from which a thin pink wire with a black stripe extends from the main relay (pin 85 *) (not to be confused with a thin red wire with a black stripe from the controller) and a thick white power wire with a black stripe (pin 87) (white and pink wires we need), this is the fan relay.

If the cooling fan is not working

To drive the fan, a DC electric motor with permanent magnet excitation ME-272 or similar is installed. Technical data of the electric fan and the sensor for switching on the fan:

  • Rated speed of the shaft of the electric motor with the impeller, 2500 - 2800 rpm.
  • Power consumption of the electric motor, 14 A
  • The temperature of the sensor contacts closure, 82 ± 2 degrees.
  • Opening temperature of the sensor contacts, 87 ± 2 degrees.

The cooling fan may not turn on due to:

  • malfunctions of the electric drive;
  • blown fuse;
  • faulty thermostat;
  • a failed thermal sensor for turning on the cooler;
  • faulty VO relay;
  • breakage of electrical wiring;
  • faulty expansion tank plug.

To check the VAZ fan motor itself, we apply a 12 V voltage from the battery to its terminals - a working motor will start working. If the problem is with the fan, you can try to repair it. The problem usually lies in the brushes or bearings. But it happens that the electric motor fails due to a short circuit or breakage in the windings. In such cases, it is best to replace the entire drive.

The VO fuse is located in the mounting block of the car's engine compartment and is designated F7 (20 A). The test is carried out using a vehicle tester, included in the probe mode.

  1. In a car with a carburetor engine it is necessary to check the sensor - turn on the ignition and short-circuit the two wires going to the sensor. The fan should turn on. If it doesn't, the problem is definitely not with the sensor.
  2. For injection cars it is necessary to warm up the engine to operating temperature, and disconnect the sensor connector by disconnecting it from the on-board network of the machine. In this case, the controller must start the fan in emergency mode. The electronic unit perceives this as a failure in the cooling system, and forces the fan drive to run continuously. If the drive starts, the sensor is faulty.

Replacing the electric fan in the car

  1. We put the car on a flat surface, immobilize it with the parking brake.
  2. We open the hood, turn off the negative terminal.
  3. Using a 10 key, unscrew the fasteners of the air filter housing.
  4. Use a screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamp on the air flow sensor and remove the corrugation.
  5. We unscrew the self-tapping screws securing the cover of the air filter housing, remove the filter element.
  6. Using the 8 key, unscrew the air intake mount and dismantle it.
  7. With a key for 10, then for 8, unscrew the nuts securing the fan casing around the perimeter (6 pieces in total).
  8. Disconnect the wiring block on the fan connector.
  9. Carefully remove the fan casing together with the drive.
  10. Using a 10 key, unscrew the 3 bolts holding the electric motor on the casing.
  11. We put a new one in its place.
  12. We put the structure in place, fix it, connect the connector.
  13. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Modernization of the control scheme

The cooling fan turns on at a dozen at a temperature of 100-105 ° C, while normal operating
the temperature of the engine is 85-90 ° C, the fan turns on when the engine overheats, which naturally has a negative effect.

This problem can be solved in two ways: adjust the switching temperature in the "brains" or make a button. We will focus on the second. Turning on the fan from the button is very convenient: got into a jam - turned it on, left - turned it off, and nobody overheats.

A button for selecting the fan operating mode was installed in the cabin (permanently disabled, permanently on, automatically switched on by means of a sensor) - this "tuning" is not mandatory, but it will be a very useful addition.

There will be a large current on the relay contacts 87, 30, on the wire from the battery to the fuse and the fan mass, and therefore we must use wires with a cross section of at least 2 mm, otherwise the thinner wire will not withstand and burn out.

All cars with an injection engine are equipped with an electric rather than a mechanical fan. With the mechanics, everything was simpler ... The fan motor is connected to the network through a relay, and the ECU unit sends a signal to this relay... Additionally, there is a fuse in the motor circuit, and is connected directly to the ECU. If the cooling fan does not work, one trick can be done on the VAZ-2114: turn off the DTOZH sensor and start the engine. And if the fan starts spinning, the problem must be looked for in the sensor.

Cooling fan diagnostics - trying to find the fault

There will be two temperature sensors: one, which is on, is connected to the ECU. It should be turned off - leave the second as it is.

We disconnect the connector, but we do not dismantle the sensor itself. Then we translate the key to position 1, well, etc.

As far as electricity is concerned, everything looks complicated here: the fan relay is in one block, and the fuse is in the other. We need a F5 fuse (20A). By the way, both the fan and the horn are connected to it.

By the way, a fuse is always located near the relay we need. It is part of the fan circuit.

ECU block outputs

For BOSCH M7.9.7 ECUs, the fan relay output is terminal 68. The “on” command corresponds to the “0 Volt” level. On MP7.0 units, everything looks no simpler - terminal 46 is connected to the relay, and the potential "zero" is also removed from it.

If the main relay is turned off, the fan relay will not be able to operate.

The fan does not work - we change it ourselves

Try to do this: you need to throw off the "minus" terminal from the battery (key "10"), and then disconnect the motor connector.

If you connect the battery again now, you can call "+12" on one of the two terminals. Now you can go for broke: the negative cable from the fan is connected to ground using the T-connector. Often on a VAZ-2114 hatchback, the fan does not work because it is not the wiring that is faulty, but the motor. And then the replacement is performed.

Once again, we make sure that the battery is turned off. Disconnect the connector as described above. Then, with a socket wrench, unscrew the two nuts holding the "stopper" (see photo).

The assembly is carried out in the reverse order. It will be possible to replace both the motor and the frame-casing.

Conclusions: what exactly needs to be done if the fan does not work (algorithm of actions)

First, check if the "plus" is connected to one of the terminals in the connector. Then connect the connector from the "mass" to check the serviceability of the electric motor. In some cases, you can observe the following:

  • Both the F5 fuse and the additional fuse are good;
  • The fan relay works as expected;
  • The DTOZH sensor is working properly;
  • The motor can only be switched on by supplying the potential "0 Volt".

There will be only one conclusion here: the "ground" contact has departed, with which the entire power line ends. This means that you will need to contact an auto electrician. All other faults can be defeated by ourselves.

Element F5 can burn out as a result of the horn closure. But then "+12" is not called on the connector, which should be alarming right away.

Fortunately, the perplexity of why the cooling fan of the VAZ 2114 does not work arises among users much less often than among the owners of other cars - brothers in the lineup. However, unfortunately, it is impossible to say that such a situation is completely unimaginable. It happens, and there is no getting away from it.

On the other hand, any machine is a complex unit. There is always something to break or be capricious. 2 fuses are responsible for the standard operation of the fan. One of them also controls the operation of the dial tone, so checking its viability is elementary: beep and listen. There is a sound - we forget about this fuse. No - we climb into the mounting block and look for the one that is indicated F5(at 20 amperes). Before you put a fresh one in place of the burned one, it will be useful to inquire why the previous one burned down. Otherwise, the new one awaits the fate of its predecessor in a very short future.

With a second fuse it's not easy to figure it out. To check it, you will have to dismantle the torpedo skin on the passenger side. Under it are hiding 3 relays, accompanied by their own bodyguard-fuse. We need the one that is average. It is pulled out and checked for integrity. If it burns out, before installing a new one, you will again need to find the cause of the breakdown. By the way, it will be good in this case if you have a spare (both for checking and for replacing a burnt-out part).

If this fuse is working, we check the adjacent relay. It is impossible to determine whether it is alive or not without an ohmmeter; we can only suggest replacing it with a new one (then you need to carry it with you in reserve) and check if the fan will work. In any case, it is worth checking the state of the contacts on the relay and, if necessary, cleaning them.

If no breakdowns are found inside the car, you will have to get out of it and look for the reasons by opening the hood.

Hood checks

Leaving the car and lifting the lid, we proceed to more serious actions.

  • The block is disconnected, on which the wires leading to the electric motor on the motor cooling fan are attached;
  • With a pair of free wires, the motor is closed to the battery. This will give us a clear picture: if the fan starts spinning, then we have a problem with the temperature sensor, if it remains motionless, the motor burned out.
In the latter case, everything is clear- the fan engine will have to be changed (or repaired, if possible and there are corresponding skills and abilities). When the temperature sensor flew, you need not make the mistake of many and not confuse it with a sensor that records the temperature of the coolant. The one we need is located above the thermostat, directly on the cylinder head.

This subsection is so named because professional auto mechanics strongly disagree that fan problems may have something to do with the part listed below. Meanwhile, the owners of VAZs insist that following these instructions significantly (and positively) affects the cooling system in general and the operation of its fan in particular.

Probably, the subtlety is still not in the lid itself, but in the etching valve, which reduces the pressure, which has reached critical values.
