All settings “for themselves” went almost instantly - after all, without unnecessary compliments to the Chinese automotive engineers from Great Wall, the fifth model of the Hover was a success. Well balanced car. By the way, this is the last model in the Hover line that boasts a frame: starting with the next, Hover H6, the Chinese decided to pay more attention to comfort, and switched to spar load-bearing body structures, hitting the segment of more road crossovers.

Again I was pleased with the landing in the Hover H5, visibility, reasonableness of interior details. But we already talked about this in detail last year: the interior of the diesel Hover H5 with automatic transmission is almost identical to its gasoline counterparts.

Like last year, I was pleased with the radio - its sensitivity was enough not to lose touch with the "world" even in the forests near Bologim. But the ability of the “Chinese” to “communicate” with electronic “things” disappointed: it was not possible to connect the “newfangled” Samsung Galaxy to the standard audio system at all. Neither wired nor Bluetooth. Not as a music store, not as a phone.

frameHover The H5 is the last of the Mohicans in the Hover lineup. A real unpretentious hard worker with a good balance off-road performance and comfort.

Since everything else was already tested and there was nothing to add to what was said, the main focus of the test, of course, was on the work diesel engine 150 hp paired with an automatic transmission.

Well, I must say right away that the work of this couple left a double impression. In some cases, this is an overflowing delight, but in others, an irresistible desire to replace the “machine” with a “handle”.

So, in more detail. Let's start with what we liked and even delighted.

I liked the work of a diesel engine coupled with an “automatic” where roads are too proud a name for directions, as well as off-road. I had to start the competition on one of the most difficult days in terms of traffic congestion - on Friday. In order not to stand in endless traffic jams on the road to Bologoye, I decided to bypass the most serious traffic jams on the regional roads of the Tver region. I won't open big secret, if I say that in some cases such roads are so bad that a trip through the complete absence of roads may seem preferable.

On the bypass "roads" of the Tver region, as a year earlier in similar areas of the Arkhangelsk, Vologda regions and Karelia, the test Hover showed itself well done. Good maneuverability, stability, ease of control - all this, if it does not make a trip on such "roads" pleasant, but significantly brightens up the path with the pleasure of driving. It is interesting that at some point I forgot that I was driving an “automatic”, the switching modes of the box seemed so logical. Compared to the gasoline engine, the diesel engine of the test Hover pleased with a businesslike rumbling, greater uniformity of motion, and smoother acceleration.

The same enthusiasm was caused by the behavior of the car on primers. The diesel Hover H5 leaves a feeling of confidence, and even makes you think that automatic transmission and off-road are not such an oxymoron, especially since the Chinese SUV has a mode manual control box.

And the primers chasing the competitors onPRO-X 2012, in order to at least glimpse their exploits in the Valdai forests, a lot of travel was done.

It was for the sake of such moments that journalists traveled around the forest primers of the Tver region.


Where the competitors cut through a couple of kilometers of a new path in a straight line, the journalists managed to “roll” a couple of tens of kilometers of forest roads.

It’s a pity, but we didn’t dare to participate in competitions in the “standard” class, that is, cars that did not undergo special serious off-road training - in such strength tests no one is immune from accidents, and the car had to be returned safe and sound by a certain date. However, I could not deny myself the pleasure of going through at least part of the route of the first day of the competition “out of standings”.

And again - the most positive impressions. Hover's diesel engine paired with automatic transmission allows a lot, and the start on the grass on a slanting hill, wet after a light rain, without a hint of wheel slippage, simply won the heart.

Busily rumbling, the car passed the first gate and part of the track for the "standards" without any problems. Deciding that it was an accident, I repeated the maneuver. Surprisingly, I moved freely along the slope, without engaging a low gear, and in general without interfering with the operation of the “machine”! Although I still turned on the four-wheel drive - an attempt at rear axle failed to climb the slope. What will happen if you connect the "lower"? It will be a real "beast", not a machine! Increasingly surprised, I repeated and repeated this maneuver until my companions finally got tired of it. The tempting view of the continuation of the route made me take my will into an iron fist: it was very difficult to refrain from starting to commit rash acts, which the test "Chinese" with automatic transmission provoked.

When testHoverH5 easily repeated this maneuver, it was very difficult to resist the accomplishment of feats.

At some point, I seriously regretted that the testHoverH5 is not mine and I can't afford to go crazy and do feats likeGreatwallDeer of Leni Unfashionable.

Time after time, I rode down the slope, unable to believe that the completely unprepared for off-road test "standard" on road tires is not experiencing any problems here.

By the way, about the function that the gasoline version of the fifth Hover did not have - diesel hover with automatic transmission has built-in pressure and temperature sensors in the wheels. I have always considered this thing more of a prank than a real necessity. But this time the function was extremely useful. Moving in a column of cars of journalists racing along forest roads in pursuit of competitors, at the very last moment I saw a bunch of bottles thrown by some, I'm not afraid to say, freak right in the middle of the road. Some of the bottles have already been broken, some are intact, and all the more dangerous. The maneuver had to be done at the last moment, and I was not completely sure that I could go around this pile of glass without consequences. This is where it came in handy onboard system tire pressure and temperature control - one click of a button, and I know that the maneuver was successful. Unfortunately, according to the practice of using it in other cars, this function is short-lived, since it usually does not tolerate Russian frosts well.

But on the track, the same “machine” left not such a rosy impression. The car at medium speeds, from about 20 - 30 km / h to 80 km / h, not only does not impress, but even periodically annoys with its thorough slowness. Remember the jokes about stubborn unhurried calves? - So this is about a diesel Hover with a gun. The car travels at the speed with which it needs to, and there are not particularly opportunities to influence the unhurried nature of the movement. Having started the maneuver, Hover H5 with automatic transmission slowly completes it, practically not reacting to hysterical attempts to speed up the process. A couple of times, until I got used to this feature, I was really scared - it seemed that Hover and I would not have time to complete the maneuver started in the hope of the dynamism of the gasoline colleague.

However, at speeds of 90 km / h and above, the diesel Hover H5 with automatic transmission acquires quite sufficient agility. This, of course, is not, but it is no longer a gasoline counterpart, in comparison with which the behavior of the car is more dynamic and predictable, and the engine does not need to spin up on the slopes - the diesel accelerates freely and uphill. Therefore, overtaking on a diesel Hover is simpler and requires less calculation and preparation for maneuver.

A few times I even used manual mode to make the car go faster. But unlike manual box, where the position of the gearbox is felt non-verbally, automatic transmissions with manual mode require special skill, since it is impossible to determine the position of the lever "by touch". Most often, to control the operation of such an automatic transmission, visual control of the speed indicator is required, which is inconvenient when making dynamic maneuvers on the highway, especially on an unusual car. As a result, manual mode is preferred off-road, and of little use on the track.

Feels like, Hover diesel The H5 has a very large power reserve: for example, the interior completely clogged with passengers did not affect the dynamics of the car in any way. It can be assumed that the automatic transmission, which is aggregated diesel engine fifth Hover, - "power", that is, designed to be able to carry a loaded trailer. Then such an annoying dip in speed at average values ​​is quite understandable.

Already saying goodbye to the car, I was very sorry that it was not possible to try out the diesel Hover H5 with “mechanics”: the engine of the test specimen seemed very interesting.
