But it’s stupid to rank the best winter tires of 2016-2017 based on this publication. Firstly, drivers in Europe are legally prohibited from putting studded tires on their cars, and secondly, winter in Europe is not winter in Russia. We have a harsher climate, more reagents on the road and completely different operating conditions. This fact must be taken into account first.

Our task is not to persuade you to one brand or another, to force you to use studded or non-studded (Velcro, friction) tires. After reading the article, you will draw your own conclusions, based on the facts presented and your personal selection criteria. Also interesting: , .

Behind the Wheel 2017: Test of winter studded tires size 185/65 R15 (Source: Behind the Wheel)

The Russian magazine "Behind the Wheel" published the results of a test conducted for 11 models of studded tires size 185/65 R15, which are intended for use on budget passenger cars mobile phones The most popular tires costing at least 2,500 rubles (≈ 43 US dollars) took part in the tests. At the same time, the list of competitors did not include cheaper tires, which are mediocre copies of popular models, as well as very old and time-tested tires.

List of tested winter studded models:

Winter tests of pre-run-in tires were carried out at the end of February 2017 in one of the provinces in northern Sweden - Norrbotten, at a winter test site Pirelli at air temperatures from -1°C to -15°C. Used as a test car hatchback Kia Rio.

The “asphalt” part of the tests was carried out at the beginning of May 2017 at the AVTOVAZ test site in Togliatti at air temperatures from +5°C to +7°C

Test features

The 2017 “Behind the Wheel” test of studded winter tires has several features. Firstly, for greater accuracy of results in all test disciplines, testers gave grades in half-point increments, and not in whole points, as was the case before.

Second, very important feature of the test, which is worth paying attention to, is that the tires for the test, contrary to global practice, were provided by manufacturing companies and were not purchased at retail outlets.

Let us recall that the practice of buying tires for testing in a retail network, rather than receiving them from manufacturing companies, became the rule after the 2016 scandal with the forgery of Nokian tires. The reason for the scandal was that Nokian company specifically for the tests provided tires with improved performance characteristics.

Other time-tested, but still actively selling tires were also undeservedly deprived of attention. Among them: , Nexen Winguard WinSpike WH6, and IG35, Pirelli Ice Zero, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS W419, not to mention the very budget Kama-Euro-519.

Test results

The results of all test disciplines are summarized in two large tables. The best indicators are highlighted in yellow.

In the first positions of the test are the tires with the largest number of studs: the first place is for (185), the second place is for (186). For the Finnish development, snow and ice are their native elements, while the products of the German tire concern “hit the jackpot”, including on wet asphalt. But the premium Nokian eventually took the lead due to high subjective ratings from testers in various tests of handling, directional stability on snow and smoothness.

Third place in the 2017 “Behind the Wheel” test for winter studded tires 185/65 R15, in the same way, went to the model. She took the bronze for hers high cross-country ability By deep snow and acceleration dynamics on snow both with and without the TCS traction control system enabled.

Fourth place went to the model with the “face” of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7, which was very popular at the time (about eight years ago). Among its undeniable advantages, the test group included good maneuverability in deep snow, confident acceleration on ice, effective braking in snow conditions, as well as low fuel consumption, but it is worth emphasizing that in this matter absolutely all competitors are almost equal.

The testers placed the cheapest tires in the test at the fifth level of the final rating. Even despite the fact that they have many more disadvantages than advantages. And on top of that, the tires are also very noisy and hard. Looking at the price lists of online stores, one gets the impression that the lower limit of the cost of tires for the test of 2,500 rubles was chosen exclusively for this model.

Tires crossed the finish line with the sixth result. Against the backdrop of last year’s ninth place, this is progress, even though experts noted only the attractive price and clear handling on the “Russian road” among the positive aspects. However, this was enough for Dunlop products to be located exactly in the middle of the standings.

The Nitto range and in particular the Therma Spike model are infrequent guests in comparative tests. And it’s very good that the “Behind the Wheel” team included them in the competition, notes Technical Specialist. It turned out that winter studded tires trademark Nitto, which in relation to Japanese company Toyo is a subsidiary, in its own way operational properties on winter roads they are no worse than the tires of its main brand. As a result, both models shared seventh place in the test.

The ninth position of the final ranking also included two models. This is with a tread design inherited from tires, and developed by Pirelli engineers. In disciplines on ice, both test participants are noticeably inferior to the leaders; in other conditions, their level of grip, although lower, is not a critical difference.

In a subjective assessment of directional stability on asphalt, Formula Ice was even able to show the best result in the test, and Gislaved excelled in acoustic comfort.

The 2017 “Behind the Wheel” test of winter studded tires failed the model of South Korean developers, falling behind the winner by 133 points. Among the 11 fifteen-inch studs in the test, it had the worst grip on ice and the weakest acceleration in snow conditions. In addition, she received comments regarding handling on icy surfaces.

The testers also did not like the limited cross-country ability of the Kumho Wi31 stud and the difficult handling when performing emergency maneuvers. There are a lot of disadvantages.

Conclusion

When selecting tires for your car, you should often look at the tables with their results in each of the test disciplines. This information is extremely necessary because it will help you choose the best option that best suits your specific operating conditions and driving style.

And remember that the last place in the test, like the first, is not always a direct guide to purchase, especially if almost half (8 out of 18) of the test disciplines consist of subjective assessments of test pilots.

Studded tires are tires designed for winter operation in most regions of the Russian Federation. They are called "spikes". Compared to friction rubber, they are better suited to the harsh Russian winter and difficult operating conditions, including very coldy(up to -25 degrees), when driving on melted ice, on city streets, deep and loose snow on country roads. They have special metal elements designed to improve grip. They are called anti-skid studs, which consist of a body and a core.

About the difficulties of choice

The modern tire market in Russia offers a large assortment of studs. Products for winter use vary in size, tread pattern, rubber compound composition, speed indexes, load capacity, etc. Depending on the characteristics, technologies used by the manufacturer, and the popularity of the brand, the cost of a tire set varies.

To understand the variety of offers and find winter tires that are most suitable in terms of performance and price, you should follow simple rules.

No. 1. A well-known brand is not the most important thing

Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli and a number of other manufacturers are the main players in the tire market. Companies value their name, so they try to produce the highest quality products. However, when choosing winter tires You should pay attention not so much to the popularity of the brand, but to the country of production, the overall quality of workmanship during external inspection.

When looking for inexpensive winter tires, you should spend time on “second line” tires, i.e. produced by subsidiaries of the tire giants. As a rule, they use technologies and developments from flagship rubber models of previous generations.

No. 2. Specialized tire centers and stores are more reliable than little-known outlets

If you like a certain tire model, then try to compare prices in several specialized stores with each other and with the average market price. Avoid offers that are too cheap. Most likely, you are being offered low-quality products.

What characteristics should you pay attention to when choosing?

  1. Standard size. Must conform to the dimensions recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Acceptable sizes are specified in the machine's operating manual. Several options are indicated - from minimum to maximum. The vehicle owner can choose the tire size at his own discretion. The following characteristics depend on the choice: smoothness and softness of movement, rolling resistance, acceleration characteristics. Also, larger diameter wheels with alloy or forged wheels make the car more stylish and beautiful.
  2. Date of manufacture. Applied to the sidewall. Consists of 4 digits. The first two indicate the week number, the next two indicate the year of manufacture. It is recommended to purchase new or last year's tires. Tire products manufactured 3 or 4 years ago have different performance characteristics.
  3. Tread pattern. The tread is one of the main elements of a tire. Determines its grip, braking and other properties. Provides wheel contact with road surface. It can be symmetrical and asymmetrical, directional and non-directional. When choosing, you need to focus on your driving style, the dynamic characteristics of the car, and the mildness or severity of the climate in winter. The directional tread pattern has improved self-cleaning and water drainage properties, wet snow compared to non-directional. An asymmetrical tread is more expensive than a symmetrical one due to its division into several functional zones. Such studded tires, as a rule, belong to the premium segment and demonstrate good performance in various road conditions.
  4. Number of spikes. Modern studded tires have from 96 to 190 studs. Too many metal hooks have a negative impact on ride quality and acoustic comfort. The option with 96 spikes is recommended in some EU countries, but for domestic realities it can hardly be called optimal. 130-studded tires are the best choice for the average winter in Russia. In it, the weight and size of the spike are balanced compared to other models.
  5. Indexes maximum load capacity and speed. They play a secondary role when choosing studded tires. Most passenger car tires are manufactured with a high safety margin. Unfavorable weather conditions in winter do not allow you to realize your speed potential and fully demonstrate the sporty nature of your cars.
