The engine range includes three petrol engines and two turbodiesels. The most powerful A6 will be equipped with a V8 4.2 engine producing 335 hp. Diesel engines use the Common Rail system. This system connects the cylinders to a common fuel line high pressure. A constant pressure is created in this high-pressure line, fuel is accumulated and distributed to the injectors. The amount of fuel injected and the injection timing are controlled by the engine control system either using solenoid valves on individual injectors or through piezo injectors. In systems with solenoid valves maximum pressure injection reaches 1800 bar.

Basic versions with 2.0 TDI and 2.4 V6 engines are front-wheel drive with manual gearboxes. Branded all-wheel drive transmission Quattro in combination with an automatic transmission is offered only for the most powerful modifications.

The fourth generation was officially presented in January 2011 at the Detroit Motor Show. In October 2014 at Paris Motor Show A restyled version of the Audi A6 was presented. The elegant exterior combines the democracy of the Audi A4 and the representativeness of the Audi A8.
