How to enter a contract internal combustion engine into a vehicle title. Installation of a contract engine. Replacing the engine with a more powerful one

Very often drivers who are not satisfied dynamic characteristics motor or its other parameters, make a replacement power unit to a more suitable one. It would seem that everything is simple, but in reality this is far from the case. Firstly, installing another engine on a car requires a large number of technical modifications. Secondly, do not forget about the documents, because the engine is different internal combustion(ICE) has its own serial number. But let's talk about everything in order.

Some general information

As for the technical part of the issue, a lot depends on the make of the car, the engine installed on it and the intended replacement. Therefore, it is impossible to say anything in more detail. Of course, it will not be difficult to replace the motor with a similar one. For example, the VAZ-2110 has a 1.5-liter power unit with a capacity of 78 hp. With. In this case, without any modifications, it can be easily replaced with the same one. Put more powerful motor It’s also possible, but this procedure will cost an order of magnitude more, and you’ll also have to run around the traffic police.

Each power unit has its own an identification number. There is also a VIN number on the body of the car, which indicates the specific model and ICE series. If the data does not match, problems may arise. Although traffic police officers currently do not have the right to check the engine, it is better not to take risks and do everything according to the law.

Installation of other engines on a GAZ-21 car

The power unit, which was previously installed on the Volga, has many disadvantages, the main ones being the following:

In general, there are more than enough problems here, and the motor itself has a relatively short resource. This is why many motorists decide to replace them. Usually they install ZMZ-405 or ZMZ-406, which are very similar in their technical characteristics. Such a replacement requires a minimum of alterations. Although you still have to modify the pan, because it rests on the elements of the front suspension. Some car owners install engines from foreign cars, but this is usually very expensive. And the gearbox in this case is also subject to mandatory replacement.

Installation of a similar power unit

Usually this procedure is resorted to only when it fails old internal combustion engine. Often major renovation The price is almost equal to buying a new motor. If there is no point in restoring the old internal combustion engine, then you definitely need to install a similar one, but new, used or contract. Installation of a motor from the same car model and similar power does not require registration. Therefore, you may not visit the traffic police department, since there is no such need.

But even in this case, it is necessary to carefully check all documents. Installing another engine on a car of the same type can be done without re-registration, but that’s not all. For example, such an engine can be removed from a stolen car. If at some point the police find out, there will be problems. Therefore, when purchasing a power unit, it is advisable to have a sales contract or a receipt confirming the transaction.

Installing another engine on a Gazelle car

The main disadvantage of a standard engine is its high fuel consumption. In this case, there is an option to switch to GAZ. However, here you will also need to obtain the relevant documents. You can take a different route by installing an imported power unit. For some time, the most popular option was the American engine from Daimler Chrysler with a volume of 2.4 liters and a power of 152 hp. With. This is an excellent internal combustion engine with quite large resource. With proper and timely service it has virtually no serious drawbacks. Consumption in the city cycle is approximately 11 liters, and on the highway less than 9. At more late cars GAS it was installed as standard.

In addition, they are also popular Japanese engines. For example, 1JZ-GE VVT-i from Toyota. It has a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 200 hp. With. This is one of best options However, its installation will not be cheap at all. In some cases, they install a 4-liter Toyota V8 paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Such power units are extremely rare on the Gazelle, because in terms of money such a procedure is not at all cheap.

How to install a VAZ engine on a ZAZ-965

Lovers retro cars often go to any expense just to improve specifications his iron horse. For example, the ZAZ-965 is often equipped with engines from VAZ or Tavria. Let's say the MeMZ-2457 is installed without any problems, you just need to slightly modify the adapter plate or install a gearbox from the ZAZ-968.

Installing the gearbox in this case is somewhat more difficult than the engine itself. It is necessary to digest the hook of the box, change it release bearing and much more. Since the effort spent should be worth it, many ZAZ owners immediately install an internal combustion engine from a VAZ. But even here it will be necessary to completely redo the slab, install a suitable gearbox, etc. However, the resulting result justifies itself, because you can install a fairly powerful motor for relatively little money. In general, installing another engine on a ZAZ-965 car is practiced quite rarely and is usually done by people who are seriously interested in the car, sparing no money or time on it.

Installation of the UMZ-4178 engine on a GAZ-69

Very often, the reason for replacement is several important factors. Firstly, the standard GAZ power unit consumes about 17-20 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers. Secondly, the AI-76 fuel recommended by the manufacturer has not been on sale for a long time. Well, besides this, many are afraid of the high mileage and wear of the internal combustion engine. As for the UMZ-4178 motor, it is more modern and has much better technical characteristics. Consumption, according to the observations of motorists, is reduced by 5-7 liters, which is high mileage very noticeable. Dynamics increases due to increased power of the power unit. Well, reliability increases, which is also important.

Installing another engine on a GAZ-69 car is accompanied by modification of the clutch housing and moving the gas pedal. Often the power unit cushions are also redesigned. Otherwise, the installation proceeds without problems and does not require significant financial costs. According to reviews from motorists, such a modification is quite justified and pays off quite quickly.

Transformation of the Volga car

Very often there are car owners who install V8 engines from cars such as GAZ-53 or GAZ-66 into their domestic vehicles. The volume of power units in this case reaches 4-5 liters, which is not small at all. There are a lot of problems during installation, ranging from insufficient space to various side member reinforcements, etc. Drivers are faced with the fact that on engines trucks GAZ is equipped with vacuum speed limiters, which are needed to protect the transmission during long climbs. IN passenger car There are no problems with this, so it is advisable to remove this element. Usually there are no problems with this, and if there are, then the specialists at the service station help solve them quite quickly. Well, now let's move on.

Replacing engines on domestic classics

As we have already figured out, installing another engine on a Volga car will require many alterations and modifications. How are things going with VAZ cars? In fact, there are not many enthusiasts making such replacements. Firstly, this is not a cost-effective procedure at all. Secondly, there will be additional costs and it will be necessary optional equipment. For example, on a VAZ-2110 you can put Japanese engine. Of course, it is reliable and more powerful. And there will be obvious savings on gasoline. But you will have to spend money on such a rework in any case. And don’t forget about documents. Typically, drivers install an additionally improved distributor with enhanced ignition, a redesigned exhaust and other radiators. This is not the entire list of what needs to be done. Therefore, before installing another engine on a VAZ car, you need to weigh the pros and cons.

"Moskvich" and engine replacement

On this domestic car Even at the factory they installed about 5 different power units. There were like own development engines, as well as Opel ones diesel internal combustion engines. For example, owners of a VAZ-2141 or 2142 with a power unit from a VAZ-2106 can easily install a 1.7-liter Ford engine. Almost all engines were carburetor, and a little later they appeared with central injection. Because of this, design complexity has increased significantly and replacement costs have increased. But even now there are drivers who successfully install V8 engines from Audi, although the costs are incommensurate with the price of the car. But this does not scare such drivers, because for them it is a hobby that is not valued in currency.

Required documents

As we have already figured out, installing another engine on a Moskvich car or any other is quite possible. But the technical side of the issue is not all. Especially when it comes to installing a more powerful power unit from another car. In this case, you will need to collect the relevant documents. The first step is to write an application to the traffic police with a request to make changes to the design of the car, and then obtain permission to do so. Next we go to an expert organization that will confirm the possibility of installing the engine on a specific make of car. Only after this the motor is installed and a declaration is obtained from the organization involved in the installation.

Let's pass Maintenance, after which we get a diagnostic card. All listed documents are provided to the traffic police. Also, the car must be inspected by experts. As you can see, installing other engines on GAZ-21 or any other cars will require a lot of effort and time.

Let's sum it up

Very often the owner vehicle can’t take his eyes off the car’s body, although the car’s dynamics leave much to be desired. In this case, many people think about installing another, more powerful engine. Moreover, very often the price of the issue does not matter to them. Of course, all decisions are made by the owner of the car and it is up to him to decide whether there will be a replacement or not.

However, there are other situations, for example, when the engine fails due to seizure. In this case, its restoration can cost a hefty sum. If you add car service services to this, you get what to buy contract motor With a warranty it's not that expensive. Although it’s better to try to find a new one, because buying a pig in a poke, especially for a lot of money, is hardly necessary. In any case, do not forget about paperwork. The engine must have a readable identification number and not be reported stolen. If you do not pay attention to these details when purchasing, then in the future there may be serious problems. After all, it will be almost impossible to prove to the traffic police or the police that you bought it and accidentally lost the receipt. Therefore, first of all, check the engine in the traffic police database and do not forget about its diagnostics.

During long-term operation Sooner or later, your car will develop problems that need to be repaired. Situations often occur when the engine fails, and repairing it is either expensive or impossible. There is only one solution to such a problem - replacing it with another engine. Questions related to replacing an engine with technical point In principle, vision does not arise - most often it is replaced independently or done in a car service center. But what about registering its replacement with the traffic police, how to register a new engine and obtain the appropriate documents?

We will try to address these and related questions in this article.

If you need to change the engine in your car to another, then there are two options:

  • replacement is made with a similar engine, with the same parameters;
  • replaced with another one with excellent characteristics.

Let's look at these options.

Recently, engine replacement has become easier. Such an element as the engine was essentially eliminated down to a spare part, thereby the traffic police stopped checking and entering the engine number in. If we take European countries as an example, engine numbering has long been abolished there.

So, based on the regulations of the State Automobile Inspectorate, if the engine is changed to exactly the same one, namely from the same model, with the same volume and output power, then it does not need to be registered with the traffic police. You are allowed to drive on your own without any registration.

But a moment may arise when the replaced engine is listed by the police as stolen, or rather removed from a stolen car. In this case, at some appropriate moment, this oversight may come to light, and then the police will become interested in it.

In order to avoid and protect yourself from these problems, you must do the following:

  • When purchasing an engine, be sure to draw up a contract or take a receipt;
  • After installation, contact the traffic police.

It is advisable to report this replacement to the traffic police. Inspectors will put a mark on the vehicle title that an engine with such and such a number has been replaced with another. After that, it will be checked, if everything is in order with it and it is not listed as stolen, then the inspectors will make a note in their database.

The engine was supplied to a different model

There are also frequent cases when drivers decide to install a different engine, for example, a more powerful one. Such a replacement is also possible, but it will require much more time and obtaining supporting documents.

IN in this case you will need to obtain documents on the basis of which you will be allowed to replace it with the chosen model, as well as go through after installation technical check for serviceability and safety. To do this you will need to contact, receive Required documents from experts and other actions.

If the engine is changed to another, then to register it you must complete the following steps:

  1. Contact the traffic police. Fill out an application for changes to the design of the vehicle ( download-). This application will be reviewed by an inspector and instructions will be given to obtain permission from a specific organization.
  2. Contact an expert organization(for example, NAMI). Here you need to obtain a document confirming the possibility of replacing the engine and the procedure for installing it.
  3. Replace the engine. This can be done at a technical center that is licensed to carry out this work. Upon completion, you need to receive a declaration of the work performed, and you will also need copies of the license and certificates of this organization. It is possible to make the replacement yourself; in this case, you will also need to fill out the declaration yourself ( download - ).
  4. Pass MOT and check the technical condition and receive a diagnostic card.
  5. Provide all received documents to the traffic police and the car for inspection.

Upon completion of all checks and requests to institutions, the following package of documents will be collected:

  • Owner's passport;
  • Contract for the purchase of an engine;
  • Application for amendments signed by the traffic police inspector;
  • Result of the expert organization;
  • Application-declaration of work performed;
  • Maintenance check result;
  • Various certifications required when replacing an engine.

If all actions are performed correctly and agreed upon by everyone, then as a result, traffic police inspectors will issue a Certificate of Compliance with the design of the vehicle, a Certificate of Vehicle Registration and a vehicle passport, as amended.

This procedure may take more than one week.

Responsibility for an unregistered engine

So, they are subject to registration only if the engine is replaced with a larger or smaller one. If this is not done, it will be a traffic violation.

For such a violation, a fine of 500 to 800 rubles is provided (Article 12.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, for unregistered in the prescribed manner automobile).

In addition to the fine, if the fact of theft is additionally confirmed, for example, the car will be detained until all the circumstances of the case are clarified. The car will be taken to the impound lot.

Replacing a power unit in a car can be caused by several reasons: someone is not satisfied with the dynamic characteristics and power of the car, someone wants to install another engine in the car because the old engine has become unusable due to long term service, accident or improper operation. Apart from purely technical points, the question arises whether it is necessary to register the engine replacement with the traffic police and, if so, what needs to be done for this. In 2011, installing another engine on the car was possible, since the engine was a regular spare part. But today the situation has changed.

Why change the engine

Most car owners want to replace the power unit in their car because it makes no sense to restore the old one (for example, after an accident, or) or there is simply no way to restore the engine, since all repair dimensions of the cylinder-piston group have been passed. Many people change their engine due to high flow rate fuel. For example, on a Gazelle you can install an American Daimler Chrysler with a power of 152 hp. and cylinder volume 2.4 liters. Fuel consumption with such an engine when driving around the city will be only 11 liters, on the highway 9 liters.

Replacement with a similar engine

This is the simplest option. In this case, if we talk about technical side matters, no changes in the design of the car are expected: all fasteners on the new unit will fit the car body in engine compartment. Registration of documents will also not cause any special difficulties: it is enough to present a receipt or invoice from the store. The same applies to used motors. Only here, instead of a store receipt and invoice, you will have to provide a purchase and sale agreement.

Installation of a contract engine

In Europe and Japan, it is customary to change cars every 3-5 years. It is worth considering that the cars were operated in almost ideal conditions: they drove on excellent roads, were serviced on time and were refueled with high-quality fuel and the same oil. Such engines can last for many more years, and are much cheaper than new units. When preparing them, the role of a supporting document will be played by a delivery agreement or a sales agreement if the motor is purchased secondhand and not imported directly from abroad.

Replacing the engine with a more powerful one

If you want to install another, more powerful motor, you will have to adjust the corresponding seats, in some cases, slightly alter the electrical wiring, achieve an exact match between the fastenings of the clutch basket and the cylinder block. It is possible to redo the exhaust system if the engine has . You won’t be able to complete the paperwork quickly either: you will have to adhere to a certain algorithm of actions:

  1. Take a special application form from the traffic police (or download it on the Internet) and fill it out.
  2. You will need to contact an expert organization: (for example, NAMI) so that its specialists evaluate new engine, inspected the car and issued a conclusion according to which the installation of another unit on the car will not lead to a decrease in safety during its operation.
  3. Install another motor. Technical centers that have the appropriate license have the right to carry out such an operation. However, it is not forbidden to replace the engine with a more powerful one yourself.
  4. Submit documents from the expert organization to the traffic police. In return you will receive a declaration statement. You need to fill it out yourself or let a representative of the technical center where the engine was changed do it.
  5. Pass the inspection and receive a diagnostic card.
  6. Submit the collected documents to the traffic police and present the car for inspection.

Another problem that may befall you when installing an engine from more powerful model this is not a match software in the engine control unit. To fix this, the engine control unit will need to be matched to the appropriate version of the internal combustion engine.

Installing an engine from another car model

From January 1, 2017, it is not allowed to change the factory design of a car without the knowledge of the State Traffic Inspectorate. If you decide to change the engine and install a unit from a different model in accordance with the law, then you must take the following steps:

  1. Submit an application to the nearest traffic police department (MREO) with the provision of a car so that specialists can assess the possibility of replacing the engine.
  2. Carry out diagnostics of the vehicle and issue an expert opinion on the possibility of installing another engine.
  3. Visit the traffic police: based on the above diagnosis, its employees will issue their permit.
  4. Install the engine: the process is carried out in a licensed technical center under the supervision of traffic police officers.
  5. Conduct recheck technical and operational characteristics of the power unit.
  6. Receive a conclusion - a declaration statement issued by the technical center specialists, which indicates the volume of the installed engine, its other parameters and describes the work performed.
  7. Go to the service center to obtain a new diagnostic card.
  8. Submit a new application to the traffic police: you will be issued a certificate of vehicle compliance with safety requirements and the changes made.
  9. Get a new PTS.

As for the technical part, an engine swap (the so-called installation of another motor) in most cases implies a complete or partial replacement transmissions. It is worth noting here that experts will refuse to issue a positive declaration if in the engine under study:

  • exhaust gas emissions contain the amount harmful substances exceeding the standards according to GOST;
  • the power supply system is depressurized;
  • exhaust system functions ineffectively;
  • noise level, engine generated, exceeds the permissible standards according to GOST;
  • crankcase ventilation is depressurized.

Installing a motor without documents

Oddly enough, there are no particular difficulties here if the newly installed power unit meets the requirements set out below:

  1. Engine by model and others technical parameters completely matches the old one.
  2. The unit number is easy to read and shows no signs of tampering (attempts to interrupt, etc.).
  3. The engine is not in the traffic police theft database.

How to register an engine replacement at the traffic police

According to the Order of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate No. 1001, from July 10, 2017, the engine installed on the car ceased to be considered a spare part. Now this is again a numbered unit with the ensuing consequences: the need to register. That is, replacing the engine with another one, even one of the same type, will have to be formalized. This means that after passing the verification procedure PTS documents you will have to change it: otherwise you will not be able to register the car. There is no need to obtain a new registration certificate (laminated card): the power unit number is not entered into it.

What documents are needed to replace an engine?

Each specific case of engine replacement requires its own package of documents, as discussed above. However, there is a list of required papers that will probably be required:

  • civil passport of the owner of the car on which the engine is supposed to be replaced;
  • application to the traffic police;
  • conclusion of specialists on the results of the technical examination;
  • documentation for the newly installed motor, if its parameters differ from the characteristics of the standard power unit;
  • diagnostic card if a more powerful motor is installed or from a different model;
  • car purchase agreement;
  • vehicle registration certificate (PTS);
  • registration certificate.

Also, do not forget to pay the state fee. If the parameters of the new motor correspond to the one being replaced, then you will have to contribute 350 rubles to the treasury. In more difficult cases(for example, replacing a motor with a unit from a different model), this amount can increase to 2,850 rubles (data as of the beginning of 2018).

Refusal of registration

This happens quite rarely. The grounds for refusal to register a vehicle with a replaced engine are:

  • signs of forgery, destruction or change in the number of the power unit;
  • discrepancy between the numbers indicated in the papers and the actual designations on the engine;
  • provision of false documents for a car or an examination of an engine;
  • availability of the engine number in the traffic police database of stolen vehicles.

Cancellation of registration

It happens that the fact of falsification of the unit number or documents for it is revealed after the vehicle is registered. In this case, the traffic police department begins its own investigation, sending requests to the place where the car was previously registered. If it turns out that the car or its replaced units are on the wanted list, then the registration is canceled and the owner is obliged to hand over documents and state numbers at the traffic police department.

One of the most important points at the time of buying contract engine are documents. The fact is that at the very beginning, when contract engines were just starting to be imported into the country, the procedure for replacing the power unit was quite complex and very labor-intensive. This situation continued until 2011. That year, a decree was issued that simplified the procedure for registering engines. The essence of this change is that the numbers were abolished, that is, in fact, the engine became a non-numbered unit; accordingly, after 2011, the engine number and model were no longer entered into the Vehicle Registration Certificate (CRC).

This was the reason for many people to speculate that the engine number was no longer needed at all, and some people began to file off the engine numbers. However, when registering a car, very often traffic police officers still check the presence of a license plate on the engine, especially for such frequently stolen cars as Camry, Land Cruiser, new models of Mercedes, Audi. If, when checking the engine number of your newly purchased car, there is no number, it will only end with the car being driven to an impound lot, since the filed number indirectly indicates that the car was stolen.

Therefore, if you buy a contract engine at an ultra-cheap price, be sure to make sure that the engine has a serial number. The number must not be cut down or interrupted.

Changes in legislation that occurred in 2011 served as the beginning of the activities of a mass of people involved in the supply of contract engines to Russia, including a huge number of scammers and other criminal elements who steal cars, cut them into spare parts and sell parts from them at retail. But, since by default the traffic police monitors the presence of numbers on power units, engine numbers and models continue to be an integral part of the engines.

If you are planning to buy a contract engine, you will probably notice that all seller companies that are known on the Internet are ready to easily provide a huge list of attached documents for any engine, including the following documents:

  1. Certificate of registration of the seller company.
  2. The organization's charter, legally drawn up.
  3. Certificate of assignment of TIN to the organization.
  4. Documents on the right to certain types of activities that this LLC is allowed to conduct.

Basically, these are documents confirming the fact that the company exists and is registered. However, all these documents may indicate that these are legally literate and law-knowledgeable scammers. At the moment, acquiring any organization is not difficult. And even if the company really exists and you, like individual, decide to conclude an agreement with it, this will only lead to the fact that the company will fulfill the terms of the agreement, but purely nominally, that is, from a legal point of view. But in reality, they may not deliver exactly what you ordered or not quite in the condition you expected. However, you will not be able to legally prove them wrong.

Contract engines enter our country through customs. If the engine is running from Europe, this customs office is located in Velikiye Luki on the border with Lithuania. It is there that each container with contract units receives a document called a cargo customs declaration, that is, a Cargo Customs Declaration.

The gas turbine declaration is accompanied by supplements that indicate the names of the units, their models and numbers. Until 2011, this document was required by the traffic police to register the engine. In addition to the customs declaration, you received a sales contract and a sales receipt. The agreement indicated that the parties to the agreement, which are the Seller and the Buyer, entered into an Agreement, in accordance with which the seller sells and the buyer buys a unit brought from abroad, having such and such a number for such and such a car.

Also, the Certificate of acceptance and transfer of the numbered unit (engine) must be attached to the Agreement. After this, the buyer had to go to an authorized service center, having a license to carry out work on the installation and dismantling of units, after which you had to go to the traffic police with all the documents and submit a statement there that the power unit was replaced in the car, after which at the observation deck they confirmed the change in the engine number and after that changes were made to the PTS.

In 2011 this procedure was abolished. Since this year, the main task of the car owner has been to ensure that the model of the engine that is installed on the car matches the model of the engine that was originally installed on it.

That is, if your car was originally equipped with four cylinder engine with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 120 hp, then you do not have the right to install a V12 engine with a volume of 6 liters and a power of 320 hp. To carry out such an operation, you will need to go to, and receive there a certificate of re-equipping the car with another unit in order to make appropriate changes to the tax base. Or, in case you put the engine less power, your tax base will decrease.

Thus, we see that although the engine number is not included in the documents, it must still be present on the engine. The presence of a number indicates that the unit is not stolen and entered our country legally and has the right to be under the hood of your car. The changes in 2011 affected only the procedure for registering engines, while the changes did not affect the Criminal Code; accordingly, the physical removal of the number from the engine is a criminal offense to this day.

Thus, we come to the question of what documents you can require from the seller and why you will need them.

First, you can request a customs declaration from the seller. The traffic police will not need it. The customs declaration will confirm the fact that the engine was brought into our country legally. The customs declaration is issued in the form of a copy, the seller also only has a copy. The original customs declaration remains at customs.

In addition to the customs declaration, you can ask the seller for a document called a Warranty Receipt. From this document you will find out what exactly the seller guarantees to you. It specifies all the conditions on which your work with the supplier is based. A warranty receipt, for example, may state a guarantee only that this engine will fit your car model, or guarantee the performance of the unit. From the point of view of the Administrative and Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, as well as the Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights, you are not protected. That is, if you were sold a faulty contract engine or an engine of the wrong model, you will not be able to prove your case in court for two reasons: the part is a complex unit and it is used.

In Russia, everything that is used is not regulated by any laws according to its condition and, accordingly, is not subject to the Law on Consumer Rights. It will be useless to present your claims in court, that is, you only need to agree on all the conditions with the supplier. Even if your agreement with the seller is supported by documents, there will be a very low probability that you will win in court.

Therefore, in fact, the only guarantee that your conditions will be met for you as a buyer is the reputation of the seller and the ability to install the purchased unit directly from the seller in his car service center. It is advisable that the installation be carried out without prepayment. If you install the engine directly from the seller, you insure yourself against claims related to the installation, because these risks for the buyer are never compensated for by anything, just like the risks associated with improper installation.

In the Moscow region, you can buy and install a contract engine from Japan at the Banzai Auto company, which is located at Mytishchi, Olimpiysky Prospekt, 42.

Thus, all of the seller’s statutory documents listed above at the beginning of the article will not give you anything for the reason that they mean nothing to the court. For you as a buyer, only one thing will matter: how honest the seller is and how trustworthy he can be. In other words, the seller’s business reputation.

Now about the main thing: how to determine the integrity of the seller if you are buying a contract part or unit for the first time and have no experience in such matters.

There are many fraudulent companies on the market that operate according to the same scheme. They always attract customers with the lowest price on the market. At the same time, they immediately tell the buyer what country the engine is coming from, which is basically impossible, since all engines are ordered on Ebay or on the Polish Allegro website.

Another point that should immediately arouse suspicion: when asked how the unit was tested, they usually answer that it was tested on a stand. This is an absolute lie, no one ever tests contract engines on a stand.

It is best to order contract engines from Europe or Japan from a company that has good feedback on the market, a good reputation and which takes money directly for the purchase of your engine, delivers it without delay on time, does not require signing a huge number of papers (one contract is enough) and, moreover, is responsible for its actions by installing the engine on your car and gives a guarantee that it will work.

All about documents for a contract engine - what they are like was last modified: December 13th, 2017 by Mechanic

Replacing the engine in a car does not always happen as part of tuning procedures; sometimes it is a necessary measure, and sometimes the only possible one in terms of repair. What does the law say about registration of changes, are any documents needed to record changes, is it necessary to mandatory register the replacement of the unit with the state inspection?

Engine replacement without registration

To answer this question, it is necessary to separate two key points, namely, the engine replacement scenario.

  • First scenario: car owner instead faulty engine installed exactly the same one, but new or working4
  • Second scenario: instead of the old engine, an alternative is installed, that is, an engine different from what was originally installed.

Identical

Replacing the engine with an identical one

Let's look at the first scenario, in which you installed a new, but exactly the same, identical unit instead of a faulty motor. New engine has the same number of cylinders, similar volume, identical in power, environmental class and other parameters. In this case, it is not necessary to register the replacement with the inspectorate, as the commentary of the traffic police representatives on their official website explains to us:

The serial number of the power unit is not the main reporting detail of the vehicle. Changes are made to registration documents only in case of changes in the environmental class of the engine and its power. The eco class affects the tolerances, and the power affects the tax base; the rest of the data, including the engine number, is unimportant.

Nevertheless…

Even though there is no need to make changes to the registration certificate, you must have documents for the engine itself. That is, you must, if necessary, be able to prove that the unit is really yours and you purchased it legally. In addition, the document must contain all the characteristics of the new engine, the main ones (power and environmental class) coincide with the previous unit. So, when purchasing an engine, even a used one, a contract one, be sure to request all necessary documents.

Is it necessary to register an engine replacement?

Alternative

If you are replacing your old engine to a more advanced one, which has different power and environmental class characteristics from the previous unit, then it is necessary to register the changes in the registration documents. According to current legislation, registration is required if, even with the same volume, at least one important parameter: either environmental class, or at least slightly powerful. Moreover, it does not matter in which direction the changes occurred.

In addition, if you are going to install an engine that is not provided for this model by the manufacturer, that is new unit is not standard for the machine, then before carrying out work, you must agree on all procedures and obtain approval from the relevant authorities. NAMI representatives explained that when installing the unit provided by the manufacturer for this model, it does not eliminate the need to register the changes made. Everything will have to be documented.

Replacing the engine with a more powerful one

Increase power without registration?

The answer here is clear - officially install a more powerful unit or increase the output of the old engine without documentation and registration is not possible. Any change to this parameter must be registered.

But this is in theory, in practice craftsmen practice chip tuning, in fact, this is a kind of bypass of the limitation. After such tuning, almost no one participates in the tests and does not register the changes, although, according to the letter of the law, they seem to be obliged. This is where the defense of formality comes into play: the engine actually and documented remains the same, it has not changed. So the only way to get more powerful engine without registering it, is to purchase a similar one that has undergone chip tuning. But remember, chip tuning does not always equal improved engine performance.
