Duster is a budget and unpretentious car. You can make an allowance for the cheapness of the service and its good qualities as a rogue, but it would be wrong to hush up his shortcomings.

During long-term operation with respect to many things, it seems that the engineers deliberately left them unfinished. For what? In order for "demanding" buyers to lean towards more thoughtfully designed, user-friendly designs and therefore more expensive models. And the point here is rather not a simple design and inexpensive finishing materials - it's a matter of ease of use and logic, if you like.

Duster does not like tall drivers - a fact. I'm 190 cm, and I noticed a few miscalculations, so:

Why is he dictating his demands, and not me?

From a number of misunderstandings and downright inhumane trunk curtain. It is impossible to fix it in the landing nests, even if you know about its features. The fragility of the curtain causes concern - I'm not sure that in the event of an accident (frontal collision, coup), it is able to withstand the onslaught of luggage. But there are also a couple of pleasant moments.

At the very least, the sockets that fix the seat belt buckles of the rear side passengers can be considered a plus - the belts are always at hand. In addition, the rear seat upholstery can be quickly removed (a “lightning” is provided around the perimeter) and washed - a very practical solution, especially when you have to deal with building materials or animals.

AT luggage compartment with the rear seats folded down, a pair of "adult" bicycles with an "XL" frame is placed, and the front wheels of the bikes can not be removed! Narrowed arches and a not very wide opening of the fifth door do not add convenience, but, having got the hang of it, bicycles can be loaded / unloaded without any problems. However, for this purpose it is better to use external systems fasteners. Both more convenient and safer.

What about body protection? Guarantee against "draft" - six years. The chips that formed on the hood a little less than a year ago do not “bloom” yet. Although the body iron of Sandero and Logans has not differed in good resistance to corrosion until now. The bottom and thresholds are treated with a thick layer of mastic, but full-fledged lockers are only in the front arches. In the rear arches, only the back side is protected by small plastic shields - strange and short-sighted for budget crossover, which was originally sharpened for use on dirt roads. However, this is solvable - full-fledged rear "wing fenders" can be installed at dealers - work plus material will cost a maximum of 2,500 rubles. But keep in mind, fender liner will be non-original… China is working.

Dacia Duster(under this brand, the crossover is sold in Europe) is far from being a safety model.

Duster is still a scarce commodity. At the official prices set by Renault, it is actually impossible to buy a crossover now - demand is significantly higher than supply. If you order a car for yourself now, the delivery time will be about a year. But dealers, taking advantage of the situation, warm their hands. Design

It’s only a pity that the crossover has retained the habit of getting its trousers dirty when leaving the cabin: no one began to redo the body panels to install other thresholds for the sake of clean trousers - this is a very costly business. To the delight of patriotic motorists and just admirers of the military style, the range of body colors was supplemented with an UAZ shade of “khaki” with a “metallic” effect. Despite the improvements, Duster, as before, looks generally not like a hand-written handsome man, but like a real workhorse. It's practical, practical and more practical.

Design

Fortunately, the modernization did not affect the famous “indestructible” Duster suspension, so you can safely drive on broken roads without breakdowns at speeds up to 80 km / h. The model is based on the budget B0 design: it has MacPherson struts in front and a torsion beam in the back, but this is the case with front-wheel drive modifications. On all-wheel drive vehicles, the rear independent suspension, like the previous one Nissan X-Trail. Adaptation to Russian conditions

Duster has been well prepared for Russian conditions operation, and now it is generally difficult to find a more suitable option in this regard at a similar price. Its minimal ground clearance is 205 mm, the angle of entry is 30°, the exit angle is 36°, and these are the characteristics of full-fledged SUVs. However, at its core, the “Frenchman” is a real SUV, because in reality extreme conditions in terms of patency it will be surpassed only Land Rover discovery sport, Jeep Cherokee performed by Trailhawk and some other models of completely different price categories. During restyling, a rigid shelf was installed in the luggage compartment instead uncomfortable curtain, and access to the gas tank was made keyless, and from now on the fuel tank hatch is opened using a lever located on the floor to the left of the driver's seat. And besides, the "SUV" began to behave quieter at speeds up to 100 km / h, and not only due to the increase in the number of soundproof mats - Renault really worked on soundproofing, even put other door seals.

Comfort

The interior of the updated Duster is definitely better than its predecessor, especially in terms of ergonomics. Now you can honk in the usual way, you don’t need to look for the emergency button, the power window buttons finally got backlit, and the Media Nav “multimedia” after refining the processor and adding memory began to please with speed. But the steering wheel is still not adjustable for reach, visibility is still hindered by the front right pillar, the keys for adjusting the exterior mirrors are unsuccessfully placed under the lever parking brake, the inner door handles crunch in a clamped hand, and the 7-inch display of the media system has not managed to rise higher and turn towards the driver. The steering wheel of the new crossover is the same as Renault Logan, with cruise control buttons with speed limiter and horn on the hub. On inside doors, metalized lock handles and decorative inserts are visible that repeat the pattern on the seats. For interior design, gloss black was also used - with it, the interior definitely became more interesting.


Archaic instrument cluster old Duster with two "wells" and an unpleasant red backlight was replaced by a new dashboard of three "wells" with white backlight, again borrowed from Logan. On the right side of the panel, both the power reserve and the fuel "appetite" are indicated. Seats on the first row received significantly elongated pillows. The backs, as they were, are far from being the most comfortable, but they are still better than the old ones. It is impossible to bring the backs to a vertical position, and only one thing can be said about lateral support - it is just “for show” here. Where the spring height adjustment is usually located is a jack. There is no particular tightness inside the car, but free space I wish the legs were bigger. Why haven't the aforementioned Duster shortcomings been fixed? Renault says there have been no serious requests from customers to change them yet, and making adjustments without a good reason would be expensive and, in principle, does not make sense. By the way, fans of the model had previously complained to the manufacturer about insufficient preparation for winter, and it was thanks to this that the restyled version was equipped with a windshield heated throughout the area. In addition, the crossover is now heated or cooled using a proprietary system. remote start Renault Start, offered for a fee.


Since the update, the Duster has gained various options, including a cruise control system, a more sensitive parking sensor, a rear-view camera, a gearshift prompt for a manual transmission, a customizable limiter, and a frankly unnecessary ECO-mode button. Airbags have not increased - there are only front and side. To assess the level of safety of the model as a whole, one should be guided by the crash test results of the Romanian version of Dacia Duster, obtained by the European organization EuroNCAP in 2011. In trials EuroNCAP vehicle earned only 3 stars out of 5, demonstrating tolerable protection for adults (74%) and children (78%), poor protection for pedestrians (28%) and a clear lack of electronic assistants (29%). The rating was also lowered for the luggage compartment and the door on the driver's side that opened during the collision.


The center console of the SUV is adorned with a 7-inch screen of the upgraded Media Nav multimedia complex with navigation, AUX and USB connectors for connecting gadgets, support Bluetooth protocol, joystick paddle and Handsfree function. The built-in navigation can receive traffic signals via RDS-TMC and, unlike the previous version, it does not slow down at all - thanks to the developers for the doubled amount of RAM. The interface of the multimedia system is simple and clear, and the sound quality is not outstanding, but not bad.

    The Renault Duster crossover has become truly "popular" in Russia - the best-selling model of the brand in our country for a very long time also held the title of the most popular car in the SUV class. However, in 2015, the position of "Duster" staggered, competitors breathe in the "back of the head". But the "Frenchman" of Romanian origin is not going to give up. We meet updated version Renault Duster.

    It was this thought that crossed my mind when, in the parking lot of the Henri Coandă Airport in the suburbs of Romanian Bucharest, where the test for journalists was conducted, I noticed an even line of 14 brand new Dusters in the exclusive Khaki color, available only for Russia. The appearance of the updated crossover has become a little more brutal and masculine, which was facilitated by new bumpers with muscular painted inserts, more massive roof rails, a different grille, 16-inch black alloy wheels and stylish optics.

    By the way, the headlights got daylight running lights, and you can always distinguish the "stern" of the new Renault Duster in the stream by the unusual pattern of the rear lights. Bumpers, although they look more massive than before, but this did not affect the geometric cross-country ability. The ground clearance is 210 mm, which allows you to confidently storm off-road. I have personally verified this. But not all at once.

    In the salon, new items were also waiting for me pleasant surprises. The front panel has changed, the center console flaunts an insert made of glossy black plastic, instead of the old rectangular frame. The tidy now looks more expensive, thanks to three separate wells, instead of two. The steering wheel is completely new, made of materials that are more pleasant to the touch. Comfortably lies in the hands in any situation, whether it is driving along a mountain serpentine in the Eastern Carpathians or long trip on direct country Romanian routes.

    The front seats are also brand new, from the frame to the upholstery materials. They hold well in tight corners, but during long highway shootings, my lower back began to whine a little. Right under driver's seat there was a lever for opening the gas tank flap from the passenger compartment. Owners of the restyled Duster will no longer have to run around gas stations with the keys in their hands. For rear passengers, an additional 12V socket and a lighting cover are provided.

    In terms of electronic "assistants" and multimedia in the new "Duster" there is also something to see. Firstly, the Renault Start branded remote engine start system, which can not only warm up the car in winter, but also cool it in summer. This system can be configured at your discretion through the Media NAV multimedia complex, which can inform you about traffic jams and cameras on the roads via a separate radio channel. Of other electronics, it is worth noting parking sensors with a rear-view camera, heating windshield and a hill-climb assistance system.

    In addition, Renault Duster has learned to save you money. So, he will prompt the driver when it is necessary to change gear so that the engine runs in the most economical range. It will also be able to “blunt” the response to the gas pedal if you activate the ECO mode, which will be extremely useful for drivers who often “twist” the motor due to inattention.

    These two systems can save up to 15% of fuel. The crossover also has cruise control. Highly handy feature, which more than once helped me out at the entrances to numerous Romanian towns and villages. Simply press a button on the steering wheel and the car slows down to its maximum speed, which helps to avoid "letters of happiness" from the traffic inspection.

    New motors, new possibilities

    On journalistic test drive Duster was presented in three versions: with a modernized two-liter 143-horsepower engine and a 6-speed "mechanics", with the same engine, but equipped with a 6-band "automatic", and with a new 1.5-liter 109-horsepower diesel engine operating in paired with 6MKP. All cars had four-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive will only be available with new gasoline unit 1.6 l with a capacity of 114 hp, which acquired chain drive Timing belt that does not require maintenance throughout the entire life of the car.

    The first in my hands was petrol version on "mechanics". The torque of the motor is 195 Nm, which are available at 4000 rpm. Compared to old version it spins more willingly and generally runs smoother and more elastic. The reason is the presence of a variable valve timing system. The transmission has retained all the advantages, including a shortened first gear, which saves on serious off-road conditions, and rapid-fire 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, which allow you to leave traffic lights among the leaders.

    The clutch pedal has retained its characteristic long stroke and requires a little getting used to. A little later, my partner and I moved to the version with the "automatic". To be honest, at first she disappointed me. Literally a day before the test of the new Duster, I drove a pre-styling model with automatic transmission and therefore was guided by completely fresh sensations. The gearbox retained its thoughtfulness and discretion.

    After pressing the gas pedal, you need to wait a couple of seconds before the car starts to accelerate. Fortunately, there is a mode manual switching, which changes the situation for the better: the car starts to respond to pressing the gas faster, and the engine spins up more willingly. But if you are used to a calm and smooth ride, then this behavior automatic transmission won't upset you too much. By the way, the box has additional protection from overheating.

    The most interesting, as expected, was the diesel version. With a 1.5-liter volume, the engine produces 109 hp, instead of the previous 90 “horses”. Torque - 240 Nm, fully available to you already from 1750 rpm. Moreover, the shelf of the moment is stretched up to 4000 - 4500 rpm. Having reached a speed of 140 km / h, the car continued to pick up speed at a very brisk pace. It also handles overtaking effortlessly and allows you to easily maintain a set pace while absorbing a very moderate amount of fuel. Consumption - about 5.3 liters in the combined cycle.

    Many do not believe in the off-road potential of the Duster. And in vain, citizens. Our route ran through the places of the Eastern Carpathians, almost untouched by man. There were also high-speed gravel sections with a washboard relief, and steep slopes and climbs with large boulders, and rather deep clay washed out by rain ... Duster drove everywhere without problems! The transmission of the model has 3 modes of operation: 2WD - front-wheel drive, AUTO - automatic, when the rear wheels are connected when the front wheels slip, LOCK - permanent drive on all wheels. When LOCK mode is selected, the torque will be distributed 50/50 between the axles and maintained up to 80 km / h, which is more than that of competitors.

    The clutch of the new "Duster" is also larger than that of the "classmates". In order to overheat it, you will need a lot of perseverance... The base tires AMTEL Cruise 4×4, having a dimension of 215/65 R16, showed themselves perfectly both on off-road and steep serpentines of the Carpathians, and on flat country roads.

    Do you know what is the most interesting? For all these improvements, you do not have to overpay. Refreshed Renault Duster will be almost the same as its predecessor. Prices start at 584,000 rubles for basic version. The top model will cost you 918,000 rubles. The cost of diesel modifications varies from 793,000 to 905,000 rubles.

    After restyling Duster got better, that's a fact. Prettier, quieter, more modern and more economical. Of course, the plastic on the doors could have been made better, and more options could have been made. But this is exactly the case when the end would not justify the means. The new "Duster" is, in my opinion, one of the best cars in terms of price/quality/opportunity ratio in their niche, and it is simply not permissible to break this balance.

    It is my deep conviction that it is much more difficult to update a bestseller than an average or a failed model. If only because the price of a mistake is too high. Fortunately, the French had a simplified task: to carry out only a restyling of the Duster, and not to design a completely new generation. Therefore, they did without bold steps. But in the nuances of the car has changed a lot. As the representatives of Renault tirelessly told me, everything is done taking into account the opinion of the buyers.

    Readers of the magazine "Behind the Wheel" were the first to learn about the updated Duster - since Mikhail Kuleshov became the first Russian journalist to drive a modernized car.     It is clear that above all I was interested in the new 1.6‑liter gasoline engine. But its term has not yet come - production will begin a little later. Therefore, I take a two-liter gasoline Duster. The main innovation is the phase shifters at the inlet and outlet. Power increased by 8 hp. (+ 6%), but the torque remained the same - apparently, the engineers decided not to overstrain the obsolete four-speed automatic.

    On the move, the increase in power is practically not felt. With mechanical Duster box Quite dynamic in city traffic and overtaking. And with an automatic? Getting rid of the clutch pedal, in return you get thoughtful reactions and lose the ability to drive smartly. There's nothing you can do about it, because it's not about the engine, but about the transmission. In terms of power and torque, the machine operates almost at the limit of its capabilities. Send him to a well-deserved rest, but a more modern box will be too expensive for the Duster. The French do not hide this and quite reasonably say that it is better to have such a machine gun than not to have any. But on the off-road, which was enough on the test route, I liked the machine more than the mechanics. You can throw stones at me, but you better listen. AT manual mode the first gear of the machine works up to almost 50 km / h. This range is more than enough for driving through difficult areas. And here is the ultra-short first gear mechanical box can put a pig: when it is twisted to the limit (and it happens very quickly), try to switch intelligently to the next stage! Severe jeepers are laughing now. But Duster is not addressed to them at all - it is for those for whom off-road is not a goal, but just one of the obstacles on the way to it, and not the most difficult one. And the "automated" Duster copes with this task perfectly well. In the nuances, the car has been seriously improved: new door seals, better sound insulation, a gas tank hatch with opening from the passenger compartment, improved seats, a rigid shelf in the trunk instead of a curtain, a button that has moved to the steering wheel hub sound signal, function of informing about traffic jams at the navigator. Duster has not risen in price after restyling by a single ruble - yet. Firstly, to keep attractive prices only for the first time is a well-known marketing ploy. Secondly, the fever in the foreign exchange market is not our ally: the hour is not even, the mess with the ruble will also affect the price tags.

    Renault hardly plans to arrange an attraction of unheard-of generosity. Despite the drop in sales, Duster feels confident enough. Chevrolet Niva is losing fans even faster, and a new generation of Niva will not appear in the foreseeable future. Ford EcoSport and Nissan Terrano so far they are not even included in the top 25 in the rating of models present on the Russian market. The French will get excited about the compact Hyundai ix25, which will be produced side by side with the Solaris and which will appear at dealers in the winter. But it will obviously be more expensive. And in addition, it is not designed to exit the asphalt, and among Duster buyers of those who regularly travel cross-country, more than half.
