Guys, I have already explained more than once that the FILTER IS NECESSARY! Especially after long mileage, and it is considered large already at 60 – 80,000 km. But for this period of time, automatic transmission manufacturers have done everything to prevent you from changing it (still, I see a small conspiracy here). This is now called a big word - “maintenance-free” automatic transmission”, like there is no “hole” to replace the filter element, and therefore don’t bother - this is not for you!

A little about conspiracy theory

But this approach is beneficial only for the manufacturer and dealer, but not for the end user! Think for yourself - previously, on 4-speed transmissions, the bottom of the gearbox was almost always removed, that is, YOU, simply unscrewed the bottom, almost all the old oil flowed out (a little remained in the radiator), and the filter was in full view. You unscrewed it and changed it, thereby making the passage of oil much easier (but more on that a little later).

Now there is no such thing! Almost all automatic transmissions, especially the new 6-speed ones, this also applies to CHEVROLET, KIA, and many other manufacturers, do not have a sump at all. But such a filter element had a number of disadvantages: the housing was small, it clogged very quickly, so the box required more attention; if, out of ignorance, it was “missed”, then it was quite likely that the automatic transmission would fail.

Because of this, they invented the “internal filter”; it was located inside. Its big advantage is its huge filtration area. And high throughput. Indeed, if you compare the filter element of the first and second types, then the latter has much more.

The advantages here are obvious - greater resource, better throughput, long service life.

However, there are also obvious disadvantages - it is located inside, and often in order to change it you need to unscrew the pan (if there is one), and accordingly change the oil completely. But the automatic transmission is always clean, and such actions had to be performed once every 60,000 kilometers, which is several years of operation (for a “simple” driver, not a taxi driver).

There are also, to this day, as it were hybrid systems, that is, two filters at once - external and internal. In such systems, the oil is much cleaner, however, they need to be monitored more closely.

The part that has remained virtually unchanged is the body. True, it used to be made of metal, but now it is increasingly made of plastic. Made in the form of a “pancake” if you like (flat and wide body), it has an inlet and outlet opening where the lubricant enters and exits ( ATF fluid).

But all the differences lie inside:

  • Old design . Previously, the filter element was metallized. It looked like a very fine mesh, which retained metal particles and pieces of friction clutches, as well as dirt that was produced during the operation of the automatic transmission. However, such a “mesh” did not retain all the “garbage”; in particular, small metal shavings, soot and fine dirt easily passed through the cells.

BUT now, as I wrote above, often in the design of automatic transmissions, this is not so easy to do. After all, there is no pan, you need to remove and “half” the gearbox, and this is very tedious and EXPENSIVE (again, dealers are in the black).
