To achieve the goal, the resistance to the movement of the mixtures in the intake and exhaust tracts is reduced, the injection and ignition system is modified.

Large-scale tuning of the Niva engine includes the following works:

Cylinder boring to increase the working volume;

Installation of lightweight pistons and valves;

Increasing the diameters and grinding the intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head;
- increasing the throughput of the intake manifold;

Installation of a lightweight flywheel;

Installation of a camshaft that increases engine torque in the selected speed range;

Installation of a zero resistance air filter and a direct-flow exhaust system.

On the modified engine, you need to put a Solex carburetor with enlarged diffusers (diameter 24-26 mm). The outdated contact ignition system is being replaced by an electronic one, equipped with a Hall sensor.

Having bored the cylinders of the "six" block by 3 mm, we get 1690 cm 3 of the working volume.

Since the pistons of native Nivov blocks do not reach the upper edge of the cylinders by 2 mm, it is possible to mount a tuning crankshaft (piston stroke 84 mm). Its installation increases the compression ratio, therefore, after tuning, the engine must be switched to A-95 gasoline.

Note that an increase in engine volume does not lead to a significant increase in fuel consumption. On the contrary, most often the appetite of the motor after such a procedure decreases due to the increase in traction and elasticity at low and medium speeds. For active acceleration, you no longer need to press the accelerator pedal to the floor. This is a direct fuel economy!

By doing DIY Niva engine tuning, it is necessary to replace the standard pistons with lightweight forged ones with a hole for the pin shifted up and to the side. This solution reduces the force of friction between the piston and the cylinder wall and increases the power of the engine. In addition, the thermal cycling strength of a forged piston is several times higher than that of a standard cast one.

The valves in the forced motor must be replaced with lightweight ones, which will prevent them from freezing and make it possible to spin the motor to maximum speed. Lightweight valves improve airflow and cylinder filling, contributing to increased power.

Trays on these valves and their stems are carefully polished to reduce wear on guide bushings and valve stem seals, and to improve heat transfer between the sleeve and stem.

A useful procedure is to install on a forced engine VAZ 2121 a set of hydraulic lifters providing shock-free operation of the camshaft-valve pair.

As a result, engine noise is reduced, and the resource of timing parts is increased.

The next step is to increase the cross-sections of the intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head. A broken shape in some areas, casting tides and other roughness require grinding with ball mills of appropriate sizes, sandblasting.

As a result of the refinement, the size of the flow area increases, all irregularities and protrusions are removed, which has a beneficial effect on filling the cylinders with the working mixture. Having completed the grinding, they begin to polish the channels.

Increased engine displacement VAZ 2121 urgently requires intensification of the fuel-air mixture supply. To ensure the increase, it is necessary to increase the cross-section of the intake manifold and reduce the flow resistance by grinding the channels.

The parts of the engine that perform rotational and reciprocating movements must be lightened as much as possible in order to reduce the loss of useful power and weaken the destructive loads for rubbing parts. Plus to the installation of light pistons and valves, the Niva crankshaft can be lightened.

However, special care is required here: the standard loads experienced by the part when the engine is running will not harm the tuned crankshaft. But the occurrence of glow ignition (detonation) can lead to cracks in the weakened elements of the crankshaft.

One of the proven options for improving the Niva engine is the flywheel lightening.

Having received a flywheel that has lost 1.5 kg, the engine spends less fuel on its spin-up, and reaches the set speed faster. As a result, the dynamics of acceleration improves, the efficiency of engine braking increases. Due to the lightweight flywheel, the main bearings of the crankshaft experience lower dynamic loads, do not overheat, and wear out more slowly.

Preparing to replace the "native" camshaft VAZ 2121 for tuning, you should clearly define your priorities. If the vehicle is used primarily for off-road driving or for towing a trailer, installation of a bottom camshaft is the best option. It increases torque and reduces fuel consumption by 10-12%.

Choosing a universal camshaft will give you more power and more torque across the entire rev range.

A horse camshaft is the best choice for active driving enthusiasts. It shifts the torque peak by 300-800 rpm upwards, which gives a noticeable increase in power starting from 3000-3500 rpm.

Forced VAZ 2121 can not be left with an old radiator. Instead, you can buy and install a more capacious radiator from the VAZ 21214.
