At maximum speed, the GLC will lose, perhaps, only in the absence of the “Virtual Cocpit” instrument panel and cup holders with thermoregulation.

The Audi Q5 has larger wheels, is equipped with air suspension and has a richer interior. Mercedes-Benz can be equipped with all this, which we will take into account during the assessment. We will test the Audi Q5 - Mercedes GLC according to several criteria: we will check both the off-road capabilities of all-wheel drive crossovers and the behavior in dynamic tests simulating city and extreme driving.

The first acquaintance with cars took place at dirt road. The hard but abrasive coating was not washed away even by late autumn rains. While Mercedes-Benz remains faithful to the 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system, the Audi Q5 has introduced a fundamentally different all-wheel drive concept for the family of MLB platform vehicles - that is, for the , Q5, A6 and modifications. It was decided to abandon permanent all-wheel drive for the sake of fuel efficiency and the ability to transmit up to 100% of the torque to one axle. The key element of the new configuration is the electrically controlled Magna clutch, which is responsible for transmitting torque to the wheels. According to press releases, the designers sought to create a mechanism in which the driver would not feel the difference between the old and new systems.

Dynamic tests on asphalt

For active driving on asphalt, the Dinamic mode in the Audi Drive Select menu is suitable. Similar in Mercedes, only the mode is called Sport +. Acceleration in a straight line is won by Audi; with its 249 horses, the crossover accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, and it really feels like that. But the jerk from the start in first gear up to about 40 km/h is consistently won by the diesel and higher-torque GLC 220. As a result, on the short straight, the more powerful Audi Q5 “brought” almost one and a half Mercedes-Benz GLC body.

Audi-Q5: rolls are moderate.

The Mercedes-Benz-GLC handles easily and unexpectedly, with slightly larger rolls, and wins the snake over the Q5.

The stabilization system strictly monitors potentially dangerous movements even on dry asphalt, nipping reckless maneuvers in the bud.

On a slow snake, a few hundredths of a second allowed the Mercedes GLC, which was almost 80 Horse power, snatch a point. Great result!

It would be unfair not to take into account the significantly more democratic Mercedes-Benz price GLC in a similar configuration - the difference with the Q5 is a million rubles - this is serious. We should reward someone who has proven himself diesel engine, superior to the Audi unit in fuel efficiency and reliability. Here you can already add two points.

The crossovers are very similar in handling. The entire difference in measurements expressed in seconds is due to more powerful engine And robotic gearbox at Q5.

Off-road, the cars are also close in their capabilities. Our Q5 has the advantage of having air suspension, but the GLC can also be equipped with it. And if the 7-speed “robot” Audi is very good in dynamic tests on the site, then off the asphalt the GLC automatic is preferable, which quite smoothly transfers torque from a high-torque diesel engine.

Let’s note only one thing about the design - all preferences are individual, to your taste!

In a word, we no longer felt superiority new Audi Q5 over the previously released Mercedes GLC! And they declared a fighting draw.

And let the handsome Range be the fourth Rover Velar. Even though the 250-horsepower version of the P250 could not be found, only the more powerful P380 with a V-shaped “six”. Anyway, Range Rover is on the sidelines: price tags for crossovers from the “German Big Three” start at three million rubles, and don’t approach the Velar without four million. Is it really that good?

E He has charisma, yes. Everything attracts the eye - from the silhouette to details like door handles, automatically extending when the central lock is unlocked. It's a pity that keyless entry It works only when you press a button located outside: you still have to get one finger dirty. But if we talk about getting into the cabin, it doesn’t matter whether it’s in the front or rear seats, - the Velar is the cleanest of cleanliness: high doors with double seals save not only the thresholds, but also part of the arch from dirt rear wheel, which is usually wiped off by passengers.

And inside... No matter how much we oppose touch panels, no matter how much we tell you that poking virtual buttons into constantly changing positions is not as convenient as physical buttons - but people like it! Velar also features a signature commanding position: from its seat you will look down on the drivers of the three other crossovers. True, the steering wheel is too big for city driving, the pedal assembly is shifted to the left, and the transmission control puck is not The best decision, when you are in a hurry to switch from Drive to R and back while parking.

At BMW everything is stricter and sportier. Yes, there are virtual instruments in front of your eyes, but without liberties: only two dials, and you can only change their design and information content. And the most interesting thing is gesture control. If you twirl your finger in the air, you increase the volume of the audio system, and you can accept or reject a phone call with a simple wave of your hand.

After BMW, Audi looks like a more compact and modest car. And the Mercedes is a little old-fashioned, but for some reason it feels very cozy. Even despite the overloaded steering column switch that we constantly criticize.

Is the six-cylinder Velar tearing everyone apart? Of course, with a mechanical supercharger... The sound of the engine is impressive, but even according to the passport, the superiority of the 380-horsepower Velar over the 250-horsepower is only a second in acceleration to “hundreds” (for which you will have to pay an additional 640 thousand rubles). It’s a pity, of course, that the measuring season is over. But the paired races showed that at the limit, the cars of the “German trio” accelerate neck and neck, and if the Range Rover breaks away, it’s not by much.

Everyone has long forgotten what the term coupe actually meant. And this is not only a two-door shortened sedan, but also a coupe de champagne - a bowl for sweet champagne, the shape of which in the 17th century was allegedly copied from a breast cast of the favorite of the French king Louis XIV. However, now we drink sparkling wine from completely different glasses, tall and narrow. And if the BMW X4 is more like them, then the Mercedes GLC Coupe is a pure bowl of water! Or rather, pure champagne.

M Is the ercedes GLC Coupe secondary? Conceptually - of course, because the X4 appeared first. But aesthetically... Elegant flowing lines of the body, gracefully shaped taillights, subtly lined with plastic wheel arches. The interior is a work of art. Take the front door upholstery: if everything is traditional in BMW, then in Mercedes the seat adjustment keys alone are worth something. And how elegant are the grilles on the Burmester speakers!

One cannot raise one’s hand to slam such a door - everyone who found themselves behind the wheel gently closed it in the hope of electric door closers. No such luck: neither the BMW X4 nor the Mercedes GLC Coupe have them - they are not in the same class.

But in X4 even basic chairs more dense and sporty, and sitting in ours with the M Performance package, I want to immediately buy an annual subscription to the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The steering wheel, covered with Alcantara, fits perfectly into men's palms. And if in Mercedes the decorative carbon panels are “manicured” with a thick layer of varnish, then in BMW they are a rough “natural product”, an undisguised interweaving of carbon fiber fibers.

It is clear that when creation of GLC Coupe in Stuttgart, more than one BMW X4 was disassembled into pieces. This can be clearly seen in the rear seats: BMW does not have ceiling handles, but Mercedes will have them. The X4 has a low cushion, so you have to sit with your knees raised high? Then in the GLC Coupe we will make it higher, and the landing will be more comfortable. But the X4 is more practical: while we were able to load 12 standard mailboxes into its trunk, only nine fit in the Mercedes. This is despite the fact that the nominal capacity of the luggage compartments is close: 491 and 500 liters “under the shelf”. But don’t rush to accuse Mercedes of falsifying the facts: they simply indicate the rated volume, taking into account the spacious underground. By the way, in both cars you will not find spare tires: the Mercedes has a compressor with sealant, while the BMW is traditionally equipped with run-flat tires, allowing driving without “pressure”.

It was not possible to select modifications that were similar in power for the test: for the base GLC 250 Coupe, we were only able to get hold of a BMW X4 xDrive35i. Almost one and a half times more powerful: 306 versus 211 horsepower! In standard modes, both of them are excellent: they allow you to crawl comfortably in traffic jams and be at the forefront of attack while overtaking on the highway. But even at the limit, the lag of the Mercedes is minimal: the difference in acceleration to “hundreds” is 1.8 seconds, and it feels even less. The gears of the nine-speed automatic transmission are well chosen: an intense increase in speed after the start is ensured by closely spaced steps - from the first to the third - the GLC 250 Coupe reaches its maximum speed in fifth, and if you slowly maintain cruising speed 110 km/h, then the box “sticks” into ninth gear and holds 1500 rpm. For comparison: the BMW tachometer needle at the same speed freezes at 1800 rpm. It is clear that the Bavarian’s gas consumption is higher.

By the way, we performed all test starts when measuring dynamics “with two pedals”: ​​the cars do not have a special launch control mode, but both cars spin their engines up to 2800 rpm and take off very quickly. But BMW's first impulse is still sharper. And you can also stand on it for a long time at a low start - while the Mercedes holds 2800 rpm for literally a second or a half, and if the driver does not release the brake pedal, then the engine speed drops to 2000 per minute.


The BMW X4 came first, so the Mercedes GLC Coupe is considered Mercedes' answer BMW brand. Moreover, the GLC turned out to be clearly no worse; it has an elegant shape, elegant body lines, stylish rear and front headlights, and wheel arches lined with plastic. Everything inside is also done top level, there are many pleasant little things that make you fall in love with this car.

The doors are so beautiful that you don’t even want to slam them too hard, but you have to slam, because both cars do not have door closers, because this is not an executive class, but more of a sports crossover.

In the BMW X4, the seats are sportier even in the basic configuration, and if you take the configuration with the M package, you immediately feel that the car is sporty. The Alcantara steering wheel fits perfectly in your hands. Mercedes has carbon panels, but they are covered with a large layer of varnish; in BMW, the carbon is not covered with varnish. In general, the Mercedes interior looks very stylish, and at the same time, it is comfortable. The seats are made in such a way that they are moderately elastic, distribute the load correctly, so that you don’t get tired in them even over long distances.

When engineers and designers from Mercedes created the GLC Coupe, they studied the BMW X4 very carefully, and they immediately made some things that were not convenient in a BMW convenient in the Mercedes GLC. For example, in the rear seats of a BMW there are no ceiling handles, in a Mercedes they are, and in a BMW the rear seat cushion is located quite low, this leads to the knees being very high. Mercedes immediately made this pillow higher, and the landing became more comfortable. In addition, in Mercedes you can install window curtains and 3-zone climate control for an additional fee. These things are not available in BMW.

Mercedes GLC Coupe interior

The Mercedes GLC Coupe has a new latest version Comand Online multimedia systems, the display is fixed in the upper part of the console, the system can be controlled using a washer. The seat adjustment buttons are located on the doors, and there is also a button to turn on the heated and ventilated seats. Since the roof is low, passengers must enter at rear seats not particularly comfortable, but sitting comfortably, even a tall person will not reach the ceiling.

But the X4 also has its advantages - it has more spacious trunk, despite the fact that the volumes are approximately the same, because in a Mercedes the total volume of the trunk also includes an underground space. There are no spare tires in the car; instead, the Mercedes has a sealant with a compressor, and the BMW uses run-flat tires, which can be driven without pressure for some time.

It was not possible to find cars with approximately the same power for the competition. Basic equipment Mercedes GLC 250 with a power of 211 hp. With. The closest car in terms of power is the BMW X4 xDrive35i with 306 hp. With. There is, of course, the most basic diesel version of a BMW with a manual transmission and a 190-horsepower engine, but it is not suitable for comparison with a Mercedes.

Both cars performed excellently when driving around the city and on the highway; in traffic jams they do not twitch, they creep along calmly; if you need to accelerate sharply while overtaking, please, there is enough power reserve to do this. Moreover, the difference in power is almost 1.5 times, but at the same time, Mercedes is not much behind the BMW - only 1.8 seconds during acceleration to 100 km/h.

The Mercedes has a 9-speed automatic transmission, the steps are close together, so the speed picks up quickly. Maximum speed the car can pick up speed already in 5th gear, but if you drive slowly at a speed of 110 km/h, the box will engage in 9th gear and the speed will not exceed 1500 rpm. In a BMW, at the same speed, the speed is at around 1800 rpm. So, BMW's fuel consumption is higher.

Measurements were carried out with 2 pedals, because these cars do not have launch control. It’s not difficult to start with two pedals - you just need to hold down the brake and gas, wait until the engine spins up to 2800 rpm and release the brake. After this, the car takes off and shows its maximum performance in terms of dynamics. But the BMW starts a little faster. Moreover, on a BMW you can stand longer with 2 pedals pressed, but on a Mercedes, if you hold at 2800 rpm for 1 - 1.5 seconds and do not release the brake pedal, the system will drop the rpm to 2000.

Despite the fact that BMW has 21-inch wheels with Pirelli tires P Zero, and in Mercedes - 19-inch with Hankook Ventus S1 tires, Mercedes has better brakes, as shown by accurate measurements. The GLC has shorter braking distances at any speed. This is because there was low temperature. When we took measurements with a regular X4 without the M package on 19-inch wheels, then braking distances was the same as Mercedes.

In terms of handling, the M-Performance package does not bring any special advantages, especially if you drive on Russian roads common use. Thanks to the narrow-profile tires, the BMW X4 behaves very nervously on uneven surfaces, and when turning, you also need to be careful not to damage the rim on some kind of hole. And the wheels and tires are not cheap - 320,000 rubles.

Therefore, there is no need to talk about any comfort, because the suspension is very stiff, like on a sports car, especially since these large wheels with narrow-profile tires are clearly not a car for Russian roads, but for German autobahns.

BMW X4 interior

  • For those who want the interior to become more unique and expensive, then you should definitely buy a car in the M package, there will be a steering wheel covered in suede, as well as carbon linings in the interior, and metal linings on the pedals.

As for the Mercedes, it is much softer thanks to the air suspension and wide-profile tires; the car rides smoothly and calmly overcomes all bumps, providing comfort in the cabin.
