Sx4 suzuki center differential design. New comment. Typical problems and malfunctions

To distinguish the cars ourselves, we asked to install the ALL GRIP nameplate on the all-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 4WD. And if it's no joke, then only on it you will recognize a car with all driving wheels.

The ground clearance of both SX4s is 180mm. Although some manufacturers offer increased ground clearance for all-wheel drive modifications of their crossovers. And this sometimes becomes a decisive factor when choosing the type of drive. Although these machines are usually more expensive.

In the case of the Suzuki SX4, the ground clearance of the mono- and all-wheel drive versions is the same - 180 mm. But on the 4WD version, it is easier to drive onto the curb without slipping. After all, while the front wheels are pulling the car onto the ledge, the rear wheels are pushing it.

Price question

One of the key points is the cost of a car in mono- and four-wheel drive versions. The new SX4, regardless of the type of drive and gearbox, is offered in two trim levels: GL and GLX. In the 2WD version with a 1.6-liter (117 hp) engine and a 5-speed manual transmission, the car can be purchased for UAH 467,000. And this is the minimum price for the model as a whole. And the same car, but with ALL GRIP (4WD) all-wheel drive, costs UAH 509,000.

The naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine with multipoint injection develops 117 hp. and 156 Nm. With such indicators of the power unit, the crossover demonstrates a calm character. But it is for such a machine that a choice of complete sets, drives, gearboxes is offered. Moreover, its cost is minimal.

In our case, it is enough to pay 42,000 UAH for four-wheel drive, but cars of other brands with all drive wheels can only be offered in a more expensive version and with more powerful motors, which entails an even greater increase in cost.

An example of this is the all-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 4WD with a more modern 1.4-liter and powerful (140 hp) turbocharged engine, which works exclusively with the automatic transmission. And one of our cars is just like that. It will cost 690,000 UAH, but it clearly demonstrates the differences in equipment.

A more modern powerful (140 hp) and high-torque (220 Nm) 1.4 Booster Jet engine with turbocharging and direct injection is installed on the Suzuki SX4 only with an automatic and all-wheel drive version. The dynamics of such a car is the best, and the speed is the highest.

Only this car is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen display, a rear-view camera and navigation. And if these options are important to you, then the choice will be unambiguous. And then you get, besides, the most dynamic and fastest of the new SX4.

Movement difference

For the 1.6-liter car, both types of drive and transmission are offered: 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. With the same transmission, it is the front-wheel drive car that accelerates to a hundred by 1 second earlier and goes 5 km / h faster. At the same time, its engine also consumes less fuel - by 0.2 liters with manual gearbox and 0.3 liters with automatic gearbox.

After all, a car with a gun is 85 kg heavier. It is as if you are carrying another adult with you all the time. However, the surcharge at the gas station for it is not so significant. In addition, it directly depends on driving style and fuel quality. But the advantages that a car with four-wheel drive gives, we appreciated behind the wheel of the mentioned 140-horsepower turbocharged Suzuki SX4 4WD.

According to factory data, it should consume gasoline at the level of an all-wheel drive 1.6-liter car with automatic transmission and a little more front-wheel drive (see table). But in fact, the fuel consumption of both cars turned out to be equal and amounted to 7.5-8.0 liters per 100 km during the test drive.

The Suzuki SX4 has two cupholders for the tunnels between the front seats.

For a dynamic ride, the naturally aspirated engine has to be constantly turned to a loud howl, the gearbox sometimes roughly switches down, and the ride becomes less smooth and uncomfortable. Whereas a car with a 1.4-liter turbo engine starts without a pause, it is noticeably easier to pick up speed even at low and medium revs. At the same time, the engine is practically inaudible, but it provides sufficient traction.

But they do not interfere with the fact that in the all-wheel drive version, the mode switch is located next to it.

In fact, in Auto mode, to save fuel, only the front-wheel drive works, but as soon as they start to slip, the rear wheels are turned on, having received half the thrust.

Torque is distributed in the same way when the switch is set to Snow or Sport. But the ESP stabilization system already comes into operation sooner or later (in accordance with the selected mode). In winter mode, the equal distribution of thrust along the axes can be locked with the Lock button. And this blocking is kept at speeds up to 60 km / h.

But we did without it even on a steep slope. We admit that we calculated in advance the path of retreat, or rather, rolling down to the very bottom, but everything turned out to be much simpler. Only by slightly turning the front wheels on the ground, the compact crossover easily drives onto a flat surface. On a mono drive, nothing would shine for us in this situation. And during normal driving, you will not notice the difference between the drives. Although, in fact, there is a difference even on smooth, clean roads. Especially if you turn on Sport mode. In it, the Suzuki SX4 becomes all-wheel drive at every turn of the steering wheel. This has a positive effect on the dynamics of the car. The appropriate attitude is created by sharper reactions of the engine to the gas pedal, since the box keeps the engine at higher revs. And all because the box begins to switch up later, and down - earlier.

You don't have to drive out of town to find the steep slope. A similar situation may arise when going to a picnic or to the beach. If we were in such a situation on a front-wheel-drive crossover, there would be problems, but with all-wheel drive we drove out playfully.

Thanks to the moderately stiff suspension, the car does not fall over. But with sharp maneuvers, it is worth remembering that on a front-wheel drive car, many drivers reflexively perform the correct actions, since its behavior is more predictable than that of an all-wheel drive, especially with torque floating along the axes. After all, even the position of the steered wheels can depend on how the car will behave: as a front-wheel drive or, having received most of the traction on the rear wheels, as a rear-wheel drive ...

But still…

The advantages of a crossover, or SUV, over passenger cars, first of all, are the increased ground clearance. But four-wheel drive on such a city car is a useful thing, but not at all necessary. With it, the car is more expensive when buying, subsequent repairs and maintenance, moreover, it consumes more fuel.

Whereas a crossover with only front drive wheels still allows you to more safely drive through damaged sections of roads, park near the curbs and climb them. Although it is still easier to do this on a car with all-wheel drive. It is less likely to rip the front wheels into slipping, because while they pull the car onto the ledge, the rear ones push it.

4WD time

In winter, the benefits of all-wheel drive are felt best. Getting out of a snow-covered parking space, driving on an unclean road and accelerating on slippery surfaces is much easier. You should also choose such a car if you at least sometimes go to rough terrain or live in such conditions where four-wheel drive is simply necessary: outside the city, where the roads are not cleaned, or where you have to climb the mountain to the house.

In addition, if you want to buy a car with more complete (or maximum) equipment and / or with the most powerful engine (this applies not only to Suzuki SX4, but also cars of other brands), then such a car will most likely be all-wheel drive.

When you first get into the car, its interior captivates - high seating position, large windows, healthy heated side mirrors. It feels like you are sitting in a helicopter with an excellent view. But at the very first crossroads, you are convinced of the opposite - an overview in no-ka-kash-ku. My eyes are level with the widest blind part of the piece of iron supporting the roof. When, in the 3rd week of operation, I managed (with my thirty years of experience) not to notice the bus on the right at the intersection ... AUTOBUS, damn it! I experienced the deepest shock. However, the view to the left is not better - when turning left, you cannot see at all where you are going and valiantly collect all the pits and potholes with the left wheel. The central mirror is located clearly at eye level and the same obstructs the forward view. In general, you have to pretend to be a restless monkey while driving - then deviate right, then left, then bend down, then straighten. But the back does not have time to numb ... not without pluses, however, yeah.

And more about mirrors. Who has the joystick for controlling the mirrors on the driver's door, under the left hand? Just a complete idiot. Firstly, I sit in the cabin in the rain too, and water on the joystick is not good. Second, what percentage of drivers are left-handed? Generally a minority. In the third, there is no button "fold mirrors" - it can only be done by hand. Fourthly, this cannot be done by hand - the mirror body rests against the plastic of the door and the mirror does not fold completely. Fifthly, well ... this will probably be news to the Suzu-guides, but the mirror on the right is not hanging for beauty. On the right, the same cars are driving, and there are garage doors. Therefore, it is not at all clear why there is heating only on the left mirror. Probably, the designer of the car is blind in his right eye. Although, judging by the paragraph described above, he does not use his eyes at all. And sixthly, why can the driver's door power window, which, judging by the inscription, claim the high title of "auto" in the mode of this "auto" can only lower the glass, but cannot raise it?

When I first turned on the wipers in the rain, I got scared. No kidding! The wiper arms are long and thick. Each time they were triggered, there was a complete sensation of a heavy, long and dangerous object flying at the intersection of the car. In general, it is even strange that this rake manages not to interfere with the review. Compared to them, the rear wiper is associated with a stump of a dog's tail. However, the entire rear part of the car is planned and assembled precisely through the rear part - the slope of the same bumper is such that when the car is washed, water does not drain from it. Do not scratch dirt out of body joints. From the gaps between the glass and the body the same. Normal people (they are clearly not in the Suzuki constructors) do not do this. Here is the rear window without any gaps. Why the hell are the gaps in the rear side windows? The rear window washer pours water to the very end of the wiper's stroke. Not at the beginning of the turn, but at the end. With all this, it was kindly given the opportunity to first moisten the glass, and only then (one horseradish per dry one) drag the wiper across the glass. Judging by the forums, this problem has gotten everyone, but even such a trifle has not been corrected for years. By the way, how can I see how much fluid is in the washer reservoir if my eye does not grow on a half-meter flexible tentacle?

The plastic of the interior was clearly picked up in some kind of garbage dump, there is no question of any mechanical strength and quality. The plastic on the doors bends at the slightest pressure, in the driver's door it generally shakes, constantly creaks, resonates and grunts. Deflectors in the center of the panel (above the tape recorder) independently change the direction of the air flow when the car is moving. The car passed only 3 thousand, and it feels like a grenade was blown up in the trunk - the plastic is almost scratched with a fingernail and immediately changes its color to white. There are very few pockets in the car where you can put something. They are very narrow in the doors. But the threshold is unreasonably wide and, given that the suspension is high and the seat is high, it is almost impossible to get out of the car without getting your pants dirty on the threshold. The pedal simulator for the left foot began to fall off already at the third thousand km. Around the same time, a very unpleasant click appeared at the end of the brake pedal travel. It manifests itself even in a standing car (you have to press the brake before switching parking to drive or reverse), which is definitely very annoying. By the way, in the manual, about the page is covered with conditions under which the ESP system "may not work correctly." For 4.5 thousand km, I have never been able to make this system work. No matter how I tried to provoke the system, it refuses to show itself in any way. Hike, this very ESP is just a hoax. Here ABS works with a bang. And thank you.

There is nowhere to put a full-size spare wheel in the car, which is absolutely not ice in winter. In general, the size of the body was shortened too much, but the weight of 1.5 tons has not gone anywhere and the dynamics of acceleration leaves much to be desired.

Yes, the 1.6-liter engine is frankly too small for a typewriter. They already wrote that, they say, give it 6,000 revolutions, and it will show itself. But for me personally, it is very uncomfortable for me to throw even 3 thousand around the city - the engine growls like a buffalo during the mating season, absolutely not creating pleasant sensations. The gas pedal is absolutely not informative. Firstly, it has a long free play (although it disappeared after the maintenance in 2000 and reappeared after 30 minutes). Secondly, I just cannot "catch" the speed I need in the city, because after a long free travel the gas pedal becomes overly sensitive and the machine starts to change gears for nothing. On a toyota, for example, I never thought about this, I pressed the gas with the usual effort and fixed my leg. Everything! The car started off, the engine gained 2000 rpm, then the automatic machine gradually reached the last gear and then the car continued to go at 2000 rpm. On Suzuka, dialing 2000 in first gear is not a problem, only it will not switch to the last gear at all. So it will be joking on the 3rd. And if it suddenly switches to the 4th, then the 3rd will immediately return. Why? Unclear. On the highway, the car reaches 2100 rpm at 90 km / h and goes almost noiselessly. In any gear at rpm from 2200 to 2500-2700, the car simply roars and has no luck. To carry at least 3000. On the highway it is 110 km / h. At a lower speed (i.e. at lower revs) on each, even the smallest hill, the machine immediately cuts in 3rd gear. In general, there is a choice on the track: either violate traffic rules, or drive. In a city at 65 km / h, the car can go in 3 different gears at: 2.5, 2 and 1.5 thousand engine revolutions. For some reason, making the machine hold 1.5 is very difficult, although this is the most economical mode. By the way, about saving.

The car has a super-duper-mega crap showing the average fuel consumption in liters per 100 km. (All of the following happened strictly on the front wheel drive). Somehow my “I want to eat” light came on 100 meters from the gas station. I drove in. I look at the mileage - 3000 km exactly. How lovely! Filled in 40 liters, dropped the average consumption and drove off. A week later, the light came on again. I look at the average consumption - 8.7 liters per hundred. Watching mileage 3418, I don't understand… I refueled again. 40 liters. I dropped not only the average consumption, but also the "A" mileage. Traveled, the light came on. I watch the mileage - 383, average consumption - 9.2. Maybe underfilling at the gas station, you ask. So it's easy to check! Immediately 2 options. 1) after refueling, we look at "how much fuel is enough" on the super-puer-maga horseradish, divide what is shown there by 100 and multiply by the consumption shown in the same place in liters per 100 km. This arithmetic did not work for me only at one gas station (I don’t refuel there anymore). 2) In the direction of the arrow on the fuel gauge (1 division of 10 liters). So I always check and check. Pour it normally. Once I filled a full tank (43 liters with a light bulb just lit up), dropped consumption and mileage. The tank was enough for 493 km. Average consumption in mathematics 43 / 4.93 = 8.7. Average fuel consumption for super-duper-mega horseradish 7.6. That is, I understand that I am on…. cheated. And I can even guess where. But why the heck? Or do not they know how to count a designer-suzukovod? Unlikely. Most likely this is a "marketing ploy", in common parlance, a deception. Impudent. And more about super-duper-mega fucking. On the front panel, the car can show a lot of things: the average fuel consumption (lying, as you already understood), and how many kilometers in the fuel tank will be enough (with a false consumption), and the temperature overboard, and three more different runs ... the instructions are written in black in Russian - do not indulge in this on the go - to switch the information, you need to climb through the steering wheel with your hand, and this is fraught with an accident. How to switch something? After all, they did not think of the auto-switching mode between all these parameters of the constructor! Or at least the button for switching the information where to make it closer, did you not have enough mind? Well, at least on the steering wheel. Instead of tape recorder control buttons. All the same, only the pause button is needed. Everything else is easier to control from the tape recorder itself - it is close and under the right hand. And more about the clock. They are in the car. Only show the time exclusively with the ignition on. Those. if you are sitting in the car and waiting for someone, you can only listen to the tape recorder, it works in the first position of the key. But alas, you cannot see the time. By the way, you only have to wait with the door closed. In the first position of the key with the driver's door open, the car makes frequent annoying sounds. With the ignition on, no. Those. you can't sit in a car with the door open, but you can go!

Light. Well, this is probably the trouble with all block lights - one lamp in two strings: for high and low beam. And on the far one only the thread of the far one shines. Probably so as not to overheat the headlight. In general, there is frankly little light at night, especially in the rain. And the headlight height correction, although it helps, is weak. And yet, personally, I am annoyed by the color of the internal illumination of the tape recorder of the stove and the air conditioner. He, stsuko, is red. Of course, I saw that the car was imported from Hungary. I know that Count Dracula comes from somewhere in those lands ... BUT, if the designer-stsuzukovodi don't know a damn thing, I inform you that, in fact, red in a car is the color of danger. To them, normal people denote indicators such as "little oil", "the handbrake is tightened - do not try to go", "abs is dead", "the engine is overheated" and so on, and not the controls are highlighted.

Suspension… everyone who went to school should know how a car shock absorber works - the rod should enter the shock absorber absolutely freely, without effort, which allows the car to pass over a bump on the road with minimal shock. The rod must come out of the shock absorber with great effort so that the wheel "flies" over the pits. At the same time, body vibrations are damped. But the designer-suzuvodov obviously profiled this lesson. The movement of the car is very hard, it reacts very strongly to everything, even the smallest pits and bumps, which is hardly useful for the suspension in general and for the body in particular.

Security system ... Oh! this is a separate song! More precisely ditties. Abusive. And so, you can unlock the doors in the car in three different ways: a button on the key fob, a button on the front door or trunk, a mechanical key. For a month and a half, I still can not bring myself to unlock the doors by double pressing the door button. Only single ... If you have locked the car with the key fob - the buttons on the car door will not open - this is dangerous! On the contrary, you can! True, in half of the cases, the "unlock" button on the keychain will lock the car ... And if it is unlocked, the turn signals will blink twice, although only the driver's door will be unlocked. And don't ask me why. Probably, the car itself does not understand whether it is locked or not (it is written in the instructions - always check whether you locked the machine). In short, you need to remember how the car closed. If you unlock the car with a single (as everyone is used to) pressing the button on the outside of the driver's door - the passenger doors will not open and will not let their wife and children in - this is dangerous! If you open the trunk with the button and load it into the car, I don't know, skis for example. Then God forbid it would occur to you to open the front door at the same time in order to straighten the load - it will not open. If a door is open, the second door cannot be unlocked! This is dangerous! I once could not get into the car for 10 minutes. Doesn't open, infection! Then by chance, fortunately, it was a rainy day, I noticed that an open door lamp was on on the dashboard. It turned out that the trunk did not close completely. In short, to the question "if you press a button on the car door, will it open?" there is no definite answer at all. If you unlock the trunk, throw something in there, close it and press the button on the driver's door, the driver's door will open. If you do the opposite, first poke a button on the driver's door, then on the trunk - the car will close. The scribe, in short. If you need to warm up the car, you have to start it. After that, it cannot be closed - it is dangerous! Stand next to the car like an idol. If there is no electronic key in the running car, then you can turn on the gear and drive quietly ... the absence of an electronic key (i.e. the owner's absence in the car) turns on the gear and does not interfere with driving the car - this is, damn it, it's safe !!! …. Well, why the hell is such a "security system"? And from whom ??? Personally, I have only one answer - to deliver maximum lifetime inconvenience to the legal owner of the car. I have no other answer. For the sake of fairness, I note that I brazenly conducted an experiment with driving without an electronic key on a 2010 Toyota RAV4 of an acquaintance. For too long he laughed at the fact that my car can safely drive without me. Leaving Toyota, I brazenly stole his electronic key, waving it in front of the driver's nose. Having made a circle of honor around me, my friend no longer laughed, but was very thoughtful ... But back to Suzuka. If the car does not need a key to drive, then what protects the Suzuku from theft? The answer is centered on page 3-27 of the owner's instructions. I quote: "Alarm indicator ... The flashing indicator prevents theft by informing the intruder that the car is equipped with a security system" Is it clear? My car is "protected" by a blinking LED !!! Just nothing. What eccentric (with the letter "M") came up with this ?! And how much did this "security system" cost me ?! Well, clearly not for the price of a blinking LED! And the installation of an alarm will not solve the problem, alas.

By the way, about the instructions. Page 1-4, middle. I quote: "When closing a locked front door, do not forget to lift the door handle, otherwise the door will remain unlocked." Did anyone understand something? Personally, I don’t. Why close a locked door? And why would she end up unlocked? This instruction clearly needs translation from Russian into Russian. Moreover, it must be taken into account that in the car, on the door, there is not a single handle that would go up or go down. Well, except for the power window keys. But this is hardly about them, right?

Painting. You guessed it. After just 500 km, places with peeling paint appeared on the left side of the car.

At the beginning of the review, I put "four-wheel drive" in quotation marks. And for good reason. The owner's manual says that all-wheel drive is needed NOT for driving on sand or snow (and I actually live in Siberia ...), but only to give the car stability. However, it is reported that it is impossible to turn on all-wheel drive on a wet road - this can lead to serious damage to the transmission. Then I begin to think that I have been cruelly deceived again. And frankly I do not understand what kind of "all-wheel drive" is, which is not clear why it is needed, and it turns out that it is not possible to turn it on in all weather conditions.

Even now, the rear brake discs have visible wear and rust spots. Probably there was not enough good steel for the whole car.

The Suzuki SX4 has a simple, understandable urban crossover fate. And if you do not use it as a tractor, there will be no problems ... The compact crossover Suzuki SX4, the brainchild of joint creativity - engineering from Suzuki and design from Fiat, was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006 and immediately went into mass production.

Cars assembled at a plant in Hungary are now being supplied to Russia, which has a positive effect on the price of the car and, oddly enough, on the price of spare parts. The range of engine modifications presented in Russia was limited, alas, to a gasoline 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder unit with a capacity of 112 liters. with., corresponding to the Euro-4 eco-standard.

For the all-wheel drive version, the manufacturer declares acceleration to hundreds in 13 seconds and a top speed of 170 km / h with an average fuel consumption in the urban cycle of 9.9 liters per hundred and 6.5 liters on the highway. The engine has established itself as reliable, moderately dynamic and economical. With a mileage of 15-20 thousand km in urban traffic jams, the only noticeable expense is replacing the spark plugs, which is necessary to correct uneven idling. A set of candles will cost 900 rubles, the work on replacing them - within 1000 rubles. Sometimes it is suggested to the service station to put iridium candles (5,500 rubles) with an increased service life, but in practice, due to the poor quality of gasoline, they have to be changed almost as often as ordinary candles, at best every 20-25 thousand km ...

The number of cars of this brand with a mileage of more than 100 thousand km is statistically insignificant, but it should be noted that when passing 100,000 MOT, the masters recommend replacing the fuel pump due to partial clogging of the protective mesh in order to prevent a decrease in pressure in the fuel system and, as a result, interruptions in operation engine. The cost of the pump is about 14,000 rubles. and work - 2500 rubles. Nevertheless, independent requests from owners to service stations with this problem are extremely rare.

The conflict of modern standards with the dishonesty of domestic oil refiners and carriers creates an additional cost item: in the SX4, the catalytic system can be called a weak point. After 60 thousand km of run, the catalyst and lambda probe were replaced. The cost of the catalyst is 27,000 rubles, the lambda probe is from 4,500 rubles. The main reason for such costs is the notorious low-quality fuel.

No fairy tales. The rear seats in the SX4 are just in case. There is not enough space - a natural retribution for compactness

For the all-wheel drive version, both a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission are available. There are no complaints about the work of the latter, which cannot be said about the mechanical transmission: the clutch "comes" after 5-7 thousand kilometers. In fairness, it should be noted that this only happens to owners who regularly operate the SX4 off-road, for which this car, of course, is not ready. The cost of the clutch kit is 15,000 rubles. plus about 10,000 rubles. for work, including removing the gimbal.

The all-wheel drive system on the SX4 4WD is controlled by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The transmission has three operating modes, and they are controlled by a button on the instrument panel: front-wheel drive (2WD), automatically engaged four-wheel drive (4WD Auto) and forced four-wheel drive (4WD Lock). The clutch works flawlessly.

The victorious dullness.
1. Transmission mode control button - to the right of the handbrake
2. The ability to turn off ESP off-road is not superfluous
3. The only thing that brings the cabin to life is the dashboard

The front suspension of the SX4 is independent of the McPherson type, the rear is semi-independent torsion bar. The handling is not bad, the ride is also in some way present, but the rear passengers feel rather uncomfortable on the uneven road. The suspension has shown itself to be reliable, one of the most common alarming symptoms is the knock of the stabilizer bushings, which appears after 20-30 thousand km, and even then it is detected during the planned diagnosis of the suspension by the workshop technicians. The price for resolving the issue is within 4000 rubles. On the early models, there were isolated cases of leakage of shock absorbers, but as a result of the warranty campaign, the problems were settled. Also, under the guarantee action, the tapping steering rack was replaced on cars manufactured in 2006 and 2007.

Front brake pads serve no more than 15 thousand km, front brake discs - about 30-40 thousand km.

Instead of a heart. There is only one motor - with a working volume of 1.6 liters. Its weak point is spark plugs.

A bit, but neat. The trunk is not huge, but comfortable - and the loading height is low and the wheel arches do not protrude

Externally, the SX4 is recognizable, its neat size and compactness give hope for minimizing parking problems and increased cross-country ability. Optics "seeing", gives some originality and expressiveness. The plastic glass of the headlights is quite resistant to temperature extremes and does not crack, but if washed carelessly, they are easily scratched. The interior is spacious enough - but only for the driver and front passenger. Even a child in a child seat will not feel comfortable behind a tall pilot. What to do, you have to pay for compactness. The same applies to the modest size of the trunk, however, it also has a plus - a small loading height.

The peculiarity of the structure of the windshield, the presence of a front side window and a wide frame of the windshield is a story for an amateur. Additional space under the windshield allows you to put all sorts of necessities, but you will have to get used to the features of the view. The interior does not differ in richness of decoration: plastic is cheap, easily scratched, but neat, nothing rattles and does not fall off. Seat fabric is abrasion and tear resistant. A good set of equipment is offered in the basic configuration: decent music with a changer and good acoustics, airbags, a multifunction steering wheel, heated mirrors. Everything is quite reliable, but there is also a drop of tar here: in winter, in the process of cleaning from the ice crust, it is easy to damage the small outer plastic pads under the wipers, the cost of which from the Japanese manufacturer is about 5,000 rubles. a piece. Other plastic often suffers: lining on the bumper and wheel arches.

In general, we can say that Suzuki's subcompact crossover is reliable, handles well and even demonstrates good dynamics at low speeds. As for the cross-country ability, despite the possibility of forced engagement of all-wheel drive, it is better not to abuse the off-road capabilities of the Suzuki SX4. The manufacturer himself deciphers the model name as Season x 4, that is, it positions the crossover as an all-weather car, and not as an alternative to UAZ cars.

Owner's opinion: Olga, Suzuki sx4 4wd, 2008, automatic
We bought a new car in the salon. So far, there have been no additional costs, only MOT. In winter and in muddy roads, too, no problem. I quickly got used to the features of the review, and it turned out to be very convenient - you can put all sorts of little things like a phone to your left. The mileage is small (25,370 km), but mostly in winter and in traffic jams. In winter, I drive mainly in the "Auto" mode. Consumption is exactly less than 9 liters. This is my third car, before that there were used cars. Anyone who first got into a new car understands me. Noisy, simple, modest, but everything shines and everything works. The music is great. At first I didn't like the dashboard, but I quickly got used to it. The seat is high - the view allows you to rebuild in advance where you need to and the oncoming headlights do not dazzle - and moderately comfortable, you do not get tired even after hours of traffic jams. The disadvantage is the small trunk. But the interior quickly warms up in winter and the glass warms up very quickly. For me, the big minus is that the car is a little dull when overtaking. But this only disciplines. I do not plan to part with the car in the near future, which means that everything is fine.

Six opinions on the Suzuki SX4 crossover

Suzuki SX4
1.6 (112 HP) 4AT
price: from 759,000 rubles.

The SX4 crossover is perhaps one of the most popular Suzuki models on the Russian market. Compact, economical, four-wheel drive and not very expensive car from year to year finds a lot of its admirers. But is this the only way the SX4 wins the hearts of the consumer? Let's check…

Unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the Suzuki SX4 opened up a new direction for the crossover world. However, for the first time, the guardians for the purity of the ranks of this tribe did not strive to classify the new car in the SUV segment. And the reasons for this were weighty. The geometric parameters of cross-country ability, if higher than that of a conventional urban hatchback, are not much higher. The four-wheel drive scheme, with the selection of torque to the rear axle through a viscous coupling, is identical to that used in those days on passenger cars. And the appearance of the car did not in any way resemble the brutal exterior of SUVs. But the fact that connoisseurs of off-road units imputed the SX4 to a minus, many buyers considered a plus, and the car quickly gained popularity. By the way, speaking about the history of its appearance, it will not be superfluous to remember that the Suzuki crossover was created together with Fiat, and it was the second party who was responsible for the appearance of the new project. The exterior of the Suzuki SX4 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's ItalDesign, and at the same time its "twin" called the Fiat Sedici was released. True, unlike its Italian counterpart, the Japanese, in addition to the main body of the hatchback for the American and some Eastern European markets (including for Russia), was also offered in the sedan version. However, the SX4 in a three-box body has never been equipped with an all-wheel drive transmission and therefore we will not consider it.

During its life, the Suzuki SX4 has undergone only two upgrades. In 2008, a smarter electronically controlled clutch replaced the conventional viscous coupling in the all-wheel drive system, and in 2010, along with minor changes to the exterior, the car acquired a new interior, improved braking system and revised power units. In addition, it is worth noting that it was in this year that the all-wheel drive versions of the crossover began to be equipped with an automatic transmission. By the way, until recently, the car was produced both in Japan and at an enterprise owned by Suzuki in Hungary, and a Russian buyer could purchase a car made both in the Land of the Rising Sun and in the territory of the former socialist camp. Today, all cars supplied to our market are exclusively of Hungarian origin.

In three modes

So, what is the modern Suzuki SX4. A crossover with an overall length of just over 4 m and a maximum ground clearance of 190 mm. The only engine offered on our market is a 1.6-liter petrol "four" located in the front transversely. The main driving axle is the front, and the torque is transmitted to the rear when one of the front wheels slips through an electronically controlled clutch.

The i-AWD all-wheel drive system has three operating modes: 2WD (front drive wheels only), 4WD Auto (rear wheels are connected if necessary) and 4WD Lock (center coupling is locked, up to 50% of the torque is supplied to the rear axle). Otherwise, the design of the car is typical for most modern crossovers - independent front and rear suspension, rack and pinion steering and disc brakes on all wheels.

Stylish and strong

As we have already said, on the Russian market, the range of power units for the Suzuki SX4 is represented by a single 112 hp engine, which can be equipped with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission. However, despite the lack of an alternative, the proposed engine for this model can be considered the golden mean. So, the SX4, equipped with a manual gearbox, is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 175 km / h (170 km / h for the version with an automatic gearbox), and 11.5 s (13.1 with automatic gearbox) are enough for it to reach 100 km / h. The average fuel consumption is 6.8 l / 100 km (with automatic transmission - 7.6).

The price tags for the car look no less attractive than the declared characteristics. The basic equipment of a car with an all-wheel drive transmission (GL equipment, manual gearbox, cost of 709,000 rubles) already includes two airbags, air conditioning, ABS with EBD, electric heated front seats and outside rear-view mirrors, front power windows, a rear seat folding in parts and roof rails. Replacing the "mechanics" with an automatic gearbox will raise the cost of this version to 759,000 rubles.

The next level of equipment (GLX equipment) starts at 779,000 rubles. for a car with "mechanics" and 839,000 rubles. with a gun. Compared to the base variant, it adds alloy wheels, fog lights, a keyless engine start system, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever tip, automatic climate control, rear power windows, 6 CD changer with MP3 player and chrome inserts in the cabin. Seriously in this case, the set of security systems is also replenished. So, there are side airbags for the driver and front passenger, inflatable curtains for passengers in the second row of seats and ESP.

Finally, the top-end equipment (GLX NAV), in addition to the previous list, receives a HMI multimedia center with a 5-inch touchscreen display, a Bosch navigation system, a CD-receiver with MP3, WMA functions with support for iPod, iPhone, USB Audio, SD-card and Bluetooth ... This configuration is offered only for a car with an automatic gearbox, and its cost is 865,000 rubles.

In budget format

Suzuki SX4 and the estimated maintenance costs look no less attractive than the price tag. The cost of basic maintenance, which the manufacturer prescribes every 15,000 km, averages about 10,000 rubles. Issuing a voluntary insurance policy (K ASKO) in the Moscow region will cost about 55,000 rubles, and the owner will pay 4,700 rubles annually for a compulsory insurance policy (OSAGO). The tax on the owner of this vehicle will cost about the same amount.

The manufacturer's warranty for all Suzuki SX4 cars sold in the Russian Federation through a network of official dealers is 3 years or 100,000 km (whichever comes first).

In conclusion, I would like to note that until recently, Suzuki SX4 had practically no competitors in our market. Even today, despite the appearance of a sufficient number of proposals in this size class, there are still no serious opponents, especially in this price segment. And as an approximate alternative, it is quite possible to consider such models as the Mitsubishi ASX, the image Nissan Juke or even the recently launched Renault Duster.

I'm a neat girl

LENYA UNFASHIONABLE

Something for a long time I did not have to ride on small cars. Colleagues know my attitude to the "urban off-road legends" and keep me away from them. But then I got the opportunity to ride a parquet floor. What can I say on the merits: the machine caused me a split personality. On the one hand, I was still a healthy, brutal man with a calm but tough driving style. On the other hand, he was the driver of a small car that rebelled against me in everything. I press on the gas and release the car in a corner - it passes it without acceleration and roll, scoffing at my ridiculous attempts to drive. And so in everything. But as soon as I calmed down and accepted the rules of the game imposed on me by the machine, a completely different movie went. I crawl quietly in the stream - no one beeps. I turn on the turn signal and do not try to rebuild - they slow down and pass. Other road users, looking at my car, see a neat little girl, not a rival. And that, so too, you can ride, I even liked it.

Freedom for Japanese children

The half-hatchback half-crossover reminded me of a child who, from childhood, showed a craving for sports fun and asked his parents to send him to the section. And those to him only: "Learn your lessons." What has grown has grown. The makings of, if not an athlete, then at least a physically developed boy, are hinted at by an all-wheel drive transmission, which can help out well both on slippery dirt roads and in snow-covered courtyards, where Suzuki will go around a hopelessly "treading" mono drive. The car runs quite briskly, but I would not refuse much more, since the chassis allows it. And the handling is just good! But the interior space is moderate, the sound insulation is weak, and the simplicity of the interior makes you shiver. Maybe he has a tempting price tag that pays for all the weaknesses in one fell swoop? But no, you will not have to pay so little for the baby. True, its competitors are few in number and the alternative is scarce. Suzuki SX4 could have turned out to be an interesting, dynamic and even fashionable version, if its power unit were "meaner" and the interior was more modern. Otherwise, I will definitely not pay more than 700,000 for a compact, even if at least three times a new car. Moreover, as the owner of a small car, I, alas, have not seen and do not see myself.

Great ideology

ALEXEY TOPUNOV
driving experience 26 years, height 178 cm, weight 70 kg

To endow the compact hatchback with all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance, in my opinion, is a great idea. Especially for those who, every single day, in any weather and any time of the year, runs the route "to the city to work - to the country home." The Suzuki SX4 is perfect for this role. Vigorous, agile, economical enough and, most importantly, capable of overcoming Russian directions after any natural anomalies. Of course, this model will not cope with the tasks of an expeditionary or a car for trips to nature by a large company, well, you should not put them in front of it. Yes, it does not have the largest trunk and interior, but how many cars do you see among the cars standing in the morning traffic jams, in which the crew outnumbers two or three people? And by the way, its cargo capacity is easy to increase, because it is not for nothing that the roof rails are already in the basic equipment. In general, if I were not burdened by my family, I would most likely think about buying a Suzuki SX4.

For your beautiful eyes

ALEXANDER BUDKIN

The huge mirrors on such a modest-sized car drew attention to themselves with a pleasant dissonance. Personally, I am in favor with both hands. I paid attention to these mugs even before I got into the car.

Settled in the driver's seat, twisted, looked around. All the most important things are in their places, but there are no excesses at all. Everything is done deliberately functionally, without "folding". I would tend to take this approach as the ideal concept for a low-cost car. However, the word “inexpensive” did not go beyond ideology. I saw the price tag - I can't call it modest. So the concept is good, but its implementation is a little blurry.

On "taxiing" - without any special frills. For the comfort of the suspension - not bad for the "kid". "Speed bumps" the machine "swallows" well. Brakes tenaciously. It is a pity that a lot of "shagreen" - joints and microrelief formed by fillers in the asphalt comes to the steering wheel from the road.

A car with a gun is not accelerated very intensively and at the same time is noisy. Under such a thrust-to-weight ratio, of course, it is better to "mechanics", but then one of the main advantages will be lost - attractiveness for the weaker half. The strong sex, inclined to latently compare with Renault Duster, is unlikely to form the backbone of fans. It is difficult to lure him into beautiful eyes alone. At least in this matter.

Reasonable sufficiency

YURI KOZLOV

I sincerely love small cars: they give joy, a smile and allow us to move away from our stupid mentality “the blacker and bigger the jeep, the cooler”. Perhaps this is why one of the few cars today, at the sight of which it starts to itch around my wallet, is the Suzuki Jimny. But the SX4 did not evoke such emotions or desires, although it is not bad. I have enough engine power, I really liked the machine for its predictability and comfortable operation, the suspension, coupled with a small body base, shakes, but there is a margin for energy consumption. The "climate" is adequate, the devices are informative, the ergonomics are at a decent level. The question is only the amount of space in the back - isn't it not enough? You can read about music by opening the previous "fitting" (ORD № 10, 2012) - the head unit is identical to that installed on the Opel Antara, and has all the same drawbacks. Average fuel consumption was reasonable for traffic jams at the end of August 9.1 l / 100 km. "But!" - it was this phrase of Kisa Vorobyaninov that came to my mind after reading the price list for the SX4 - 865,000 rubles. Only an assembly in the Land of the Rising Sun could sweeten the pill to the owner of a Japanese car, but it is Hungarian. I began to cool more and more.

Not for all

LEONID KLIMANOVICH
driving experience 20 years, height 187 cm, weight 79 kg

Suzuki SX4 has not been updated that much, more cosmetic. But in fact it remained the same. On the way, he leaves a feeling of strong and rather mobile, on it you can dashingly jump over speed bumps, he dives into turns willingly and nimbly. But a somewhat stupid automaton takes away some of this liveliness and agility - he either thinks at the wrong time, then starts to fuss, constantly changing gears, alas, also not always on time. The compactness and decent crossover by the standards of a crossover will appeal to many, if not during field trips, then at least while driving through snowy winter yards. However, the high noise level and modest finishing materials are unlikely to please everyone who is willing to shell out the amount at which sellers value this car. And the headroom inside the Suzuki is not impressive. In general, not at all for everyone.

A car can be interesting for its striking design, unusual technical solutions, luxurious equipment, outstanding off-road or racing abilities, special spaciousness or extreme economy. The updated Suzuki SX4 4WD is interesting for others - the presence of all-wheel drive and the absence of competitors.

ILYA ZINOVIEV

The test Suzuki SX4 4WD is a compact four-wheel drive vehicle. The key word is "four-wheel drive". Because we have a dime a dozen of compact cars, but among them only the SX4 4WD crossover boasts all-wheel drive.

True, calling the SX4 a crossover can only be a stretch. The protective plastic body kit, characteristic of the crossover, is absent here. The shiny inserts imitating protection under the front and rear bumpers do not count - these are not steel power structures, but decorative elements.

The declared ground clearance of 175 mm does not save - the designers and constructors have grown too long "beak" of the SX4. Why this was done is not clear: the radiators, not to mention the engine, are at a decent distance from the edge of the front bumper. The resulting huge front overhang for a crossover will make any neat driver refuse to conquer even urban off-road such as snowdrifts or high curbs. The rear overhang is smaller, but there it hangs ugly and low across the muffler bank.

There is a blocking of the clutch, but due to the unsuccessful geometry of the machine, it is not clear where and how it can be used so as not to break or tear anything off. With the clutch locked, the SX4 cannot go fast, but it is capable of very briskly kneading mud on a wet country road, until in some difficult place it hits the ground with its prominent "jaw". Taking obstacles in stride on the SX4 is scary. So four-wheel drive is not here for off-road exploits. If you raise the car at least five centimeters and somehow shorten the front end, then - yes, it will be interesting on light off-road.

The protection under the rear bumper is more of a decoration than a power element. In addition, an unprotected muffler hangs under it.

It's a shame, but four-wheel drive is not here for a drive. To enjoy the high-speed driving of an all-wheel-drive car, the engine must be vigorous, the four-wheel drive must be permanent, and not connected by electronics at the time of front wheel slip, like in the Suzuki SX4. In addition, even with the current modernized 1.6-liter engine, the SX4 has only 112 liters. with. and sluggish dynamics.

Perhaps someone will appreciate the advantages of the SX4 all-wheel drive, confidently pulling off from a traffic light through a snow slurry, driving at an uncomfortable angle in the garage in winter, or storming a not particularly steep, but slippery climb. Why else would this type of all-wheel drive be useful on such a car is a big question. The only positive thing about the plug-in all-wheel drive is the low gas consumption, which is similar to mono-drive cars, which can be easily explained: most of the time the plug-in all-wheel drive system does not work.

Outwardly, our Suzuki SX4 is a traditional kurgozny compact class car with a hatchback body: a sloping beak of the hood in front, a stump of a trunk in the back. It differs from "classmates" except that the rather large ears of the mirrors, wide front pillars with glass and short sticks of roof rails. No miracles of geometry and design: the car is small and looks small too - in the back, in the front, in the sides.

The interior is austere: gray plastic with rare silver inserts, armchairs made of worn synthetics, a hard bagel adjustable only in height steering wheel, unpretentious instruments with red illumination.

Sitting behind the wheel and next to the driver is quite comfortable. The ceiling is high, but unfortunately there is no armrest. But you can open the doors and start the engine without removing the key from your pocket, there is an audio system with a six-disc changer, one-zone climate control, six airbags and heated front seats.

For rear passengers, the comfort is thinner: from the pleasant - only head restraints, power windows and ISOFIX child seat mountings. There is not enough space on the back sofa, passengers will be cramped here. But if you carry a child there, then you can treat him with candy or give him a slap on the head without even turning around - you just have to stretch out your hand.

The trunk is small (253 liters with the rear seat backs raised), but cozy: there is separate lighting, a removable double floor shelf and two niche pockets on the sides. A bicycle, even a child's, will fit here only in disassembled form, but again there are advantages - in such a limited space, nothing will be lost when rolling somewhere.

And one more fat plus in favor of the Suzuki SX4 4WD: future buyers will not have to rack their brains choosing the right configuration and additional option packages. Because there is no choice. If the SX4 is all-wheel drive, you can buy it from us only in the above-described GLX configuration with a 1.6-liter engine for 759 thousand rubles. with a mechanical five-speed or for 819 thousand rubles. with an automatic four-speed transmission. In the first case, it will be assembled in Hungary, in the second - in Japan.

In search of additional opportunities

By no means can we say that the Suzuki SX4 does not drive well. Rides normally, if you take skillfully.

It is necessary to put the automatic transmission selector in the "D" position, and then swing it to the left, and automatic gear selection will be limited to three of the four available. Anyone who wants to move around the city in the SX4 more or less dynamically should immediately develop the habit of such movement.

It is not for nothing that clever Japanese designers have provided for this mode: the fourth gear of the SX4 automatic transmission in the city is clearly superfluous - with it the car is impermissibly stupid. And having left somewhere on the highway and having accelerated, you can return the fourth one by swinging the selector in the other direction.

The engine on the updated SX4, although it became 5 liters. with. more powerful than its predecessor, but remains the same tight and loud. Out of habit, it's even scary to press the pedal properly. The engine hums pleasantly at idle, growls softly at medium speeds, and hums disgustingly at high speeds. The responses to the gas pedal are poor, and the car cannot be said to accelerate in accordance with the sounds it makes. That is, having very modest dynamic characteristics, the SX4 is noisy "out of order".

But the car brakes, on the contrary, almost silently and very well. Lightweight, clear, responsive and very grippy brakes. Here it is worth noting another difference between the updated SX4 - the brake discs are now not only in the front, but also in the back.

And the suspension of the car can be liked by many: the front is MacPherson strut, the rear torsion bars are not noisy, energy-intensive, providing minimal roll in corners. For such a suspension and brakes, it would be good to have a more powerful motor and a less thoughtful box - it would turn out to be a very pleasant car to drive.

In addition to the slowness, the review is also annoying. Racks with glass is, perhaps, fashionable and beautiful, but nothing can be seen in these triangular pieces of glass. This is especially unpleasant in a turn or at an intersection. You have to stretch your neck like a goose to see where you are going.

Another unpleasant feature of the SX4 is the heated side mirrors. The mirrors themselves are large and comfortable, but the heating elements for some reason do not work on the entire area of the mirror glass, but only in the middle, without touching the edges. In the rain, heating can dry only a small rectangular window in the center of each mirror.

The car was assembled in Japanese with high quality: the body clearances, the efforts with which the doors are closed - everything is normal. In the cabin, nothing creaks, rustles or dangles. The electric power steering wheel is a little empty, but light, the headlights shine well.

You quickly get used to the small size of the car. Even the trunk, which at first seemed very small, during the tests managed to fit four 27-liter gas cylinders upright. The double floor and the top shelf had to be left in the garage, but the rear seat back did not need to be folded.

In general, the Suzuki SX4 4WD is a nice, well-made, but rather boring car. It may seem interesting in it only the presence of an all-wheel drive, and even then only because it is the smallest and most affordable all-wheel drive car today that can be bought with an automatic transmission. But on the other hand, it is important to understand that all-wheel drive provides little additional capabilities for the SX4, and the all-wheel drive version costs 100 thousand rubles. more expensive than a conventional front-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 of the same equipment.

There are no competitors to the four-wheel drive SX4 in our market. An all-wheel drive design crossover Nissan Juke of a similar size costs at least 150 thousand rubles. more expensive, a larger hatchback Subaru Impreza XV - at least 200 thousand rubles. There is also the all-wheel drive station wagon Great Wall Hover M2, which is 300 thousand rubles cheaper, but it is Chinese, weak, produced only with a manual transmission and has few good reviews.

Like many other compact cars, the Suzuki SX4 4WD promises to be inexpensive to operate. Average gasoline consumption in the "city - highway" mode for a week of operation is 8.7 liters per 100 km. Casco insurance - 40-60 thousand rubles. per year, depending on the insurance company and insurance conditions, OSAGO - 4752 rubles, transport tax - 2240 rubles. in year. The cost of the first maintenance is 6-9 thousand rubles. depending on the mileage, taking into account the cost of consumables. Interservice mileage - 15 thousand km or one year of operation. The price of winter tires of the size 205/60 R16 is 4-6 thousand rubles. for the tire.
