All these "lads" have a common residence - the Sevel Nord plant in France, which was built in the mid-1990s by the PSA Peugeot Citroen alliance together with Fiat. The wheelbase of the long-wheelbase passenger Scudo is 3122 mm, while the overall length is 5135 mm. It looks impressive, and already from the outside it seems that the Italian is quite roomy. Family traits and some similarities with Ducato are easily recognizable. The design of the Scudo has remained largely unchanged since 2007, but the sharpened "chisel" shape of the body looks in the spirit of the times. A raised sill line that slopes down to the headlights gives the vehicle a dynamic and expressive look. In the exterior, hypertrophied details are striking: a massive front bumper, swollen headlights, a voluminous radiator grille in a chrome edging, a heavy angular stern with narrow vertical rectangles of rear optics - everything is in place and looks good. For the test we got a long wheelbase variant in the Panorama configuration. Access to the passenger compartment is through a side sliding door, the second such door as an option will cost 18,000 rubles. The doorway here is medium in size, but it is quite enough for a comfortable passage to the 2nd and 3rd rows. To go back, you first need to fold the back of the outer middle row seat, and then recline the entire seat. You don't have to be abnormally tall and well-fed to find not too wide adjustment ranges for the steering wheel and seat, but it doesn't hurt to get comfortable in the big driver's seat. Landing is high, visibility to the front and sides is excellent, there is plenty of room for the driver and front passengers. However, handling closely spaced pedals will likely require some skill, since the pedal assembly is too narrow here. Since the Scudo is only equipped with "mechanics", in any case there will be 3 pedals. The interior is decorated in a utilitarian and no-frills way - the center console accommodates a miniature monochrome screen, 2 large rectangular air vents, a media system unit, a climate control panel, and at the very bottom there is a manual transmission handle with an ashtray. Everything looks simple, and therefore it is impossible to get lost. Pleasantly surprised by the large number of compartments for small items, retractable cup holders in the side parts of the dashboard, large pockets on the inner door panels. In the long-wheelbase version of the minibus, passengers are unlikely to have any complaints about the lack of space. This also applies to the double front passenger seat, as well as rows 2 and 3, which include 3 full seats. There is enough space for tall and sturdy people. All seats are comfortable and welcoming, the main thing is that inexpensive velor is strong and durable. The armchairs can be folded without much effort, in the 2 rear rows the backrest of the middle armchair is transformed into a miniature table with cup holders - very convenient. In the cabin there are a lot of various shelves, pockets, hiding places and compartments. Particularly pleasing is the functional shelf under the ceiling with 3 large niches. A large trunk speaks in favor of practicality. The Italian is adapted to Russian conditions, as evidenced by the reconfigured suspension, increased battery capacity, reinforced heat-resistant rubber seals. Scudo is equipped with a single French-made diesel engine with a volume of 2 liters, 120 horsepower and a single 6-speed "mechanics". This arsenal is enough for the car "for the eyes" to provide adequate acceleration even in a loaded state. Of course, we are not talking about explosive dynamics, but there is enough traction to feel confident when overtaking on a straight line. The elastic motor, delivering 300 Nm at 2,000 rpm of torque, makes it easy to get away from the 2nd speed, and at the 3rd engine pulls from 10,000 rpm at a speed of 30 km / h. Fiat is easy to drive and extremely responsive. This also applies to a sensitive response to the gas pedal, and adequate steering response, and comfortable operation of the omnivorous suspension. The manual transmission generally works well, but still there is some understatement: at first, there may be some difficulties in shifting gears due to not entirely intelligible gear fixation. The rest of the Scudo disposes of long-distance trips and long stays behind the wheel. The engine is most active at low revs, and the higher the revs, the louder the engine song. As for the economy, even if you do not trust the passport characteristics for fuel consumption, which record 7.4 l / 100 km of track in the combined cycle, and just in case add 1 liter to this data, the situation will not become critical. The initial configuration for a 9-seater passenger Scudo Comby SWB with a short wheelbase costs 1,348,000 rubles. This amount includes glazed hinged rear doors, electric drive and heated rear-view mirrors, electric front windows, ABS, central locking, a window in the sliding door, driver's airbag, power accessories with an enlarged battery and a generator of increased power, as well as a full-size "spare wheel" ... A more equipped version of the Scudo Panorama Executive LWB with a long wheelbase (the one that was on the test) will cost from 1,556,000 rubles, while the car will be 8-seater, without a rain and light sensor (7,800 rubles), "fog light" ( 8 400 rubles) and parking sensors (13 800 rubles). Among the first competitors of the Fiat Scudo are its relatives, who also have other engines and other transmissions available. The cost of the options does not differ much from that of the Italian. Peugeot offers only the long-wheelbase version with the standard Expert Tepee roof, the price of which starts at 1,429,000 rubles. for the version with a 90-horsepower 1.6-liter engine and 5-speed "mechanics". The version with the same 2-liter engine as the Scudo is significantly more expensive for Peugeot - from 1,529,000 rubles. A similar situation is with Citroen - only a long wheelbase version with a standard roof in the same Jumpy Multispace configuration is available, costing from 1,409,000 rubles. for the version with a 1.6-liter engine and 5-speed "mechanics". A modification with the same 120-horsepower unit as the Fiat Scudo costs even more - 1,599,000 rubles. As you can see, a moderate pricing policy is Fiat's trump card, so our hero has something to argue with his French classmates, not to mention such expensive “dinosaurs” in the class as the VW Transporter and Mercedes-Benz Vito. As an inexpensive, reliable and comfortable family minibus, the Italian looks more than worthy. Isn't it an option, for example, for large families?

Model history and purpose

The premiere of the first generation Fiat Scudo took place in 1995. The model received compact dimensions and good reviews from experts. With a length of over 2 meters, the machine had a large carrying capacity and productivity. The line of power plants for the first generation of Fiat Skudo was rather limited and included 3 diesel units: a 1.9-liter engine (68 hp), a 2-liter engine (89 hp) and a 2-liter turbocharged engine with an increased power (99 hp).

The appearance of the debut Fiat Scudo turned out to be very unassuming: slightly angular shapes, a small grille and rectangular headlights. This was explained by the fact that good functionality was chosen as the priority for the first generation of the car. Fiat has achieved the desired result, and Skudo has made a splash in the small commercial vehicle market. However, consumer reviews indicated a number of significant problems in the car. The largest number of complaints was addressed to engines, the power of which was not always sufficient.

The result of the improvements was the appearance in 2004 of new power plants. Only the version with a 1.9-liter diesel engine remained unchanged, the production of modifications with other units has ceased. Instead, there were variations with JTD turbodiesels (93 and 108 hp). The production of gasoline versions of the Fiat Scudo with a 2-liter unit also began. The model also underwent a slight facelift, becoming more streamlined. The front has a new brand logo and a huge grille.

The second generation of the car was shown in 2007. It is this option that is currently on sale. In terms of style and individual structural elements, the model turned out to be very similar to the Fiat Ducato. Spaciousness and convenience were again chosen as the main concepts of the model. At the same time, the car has become much more attractive, and the carrying capacity and roominess have been increased. The passenger version could accommodate not 7, but 9 people. Fiat Skudo got its own unique style that made it look like a sports station wagon. The large radiator grille, huge headlights and streamlined shape have a positive effect on the attractiveness of the car. The power plants have been modified specifically for the new generation.

In 2007, a special modification of the Fiat Scudo debuted - the Panorama minibus. When creating this model, the designers again relied on the Ducato design. The version was distinguished by high driving comfort, large roominess and good dynamic performance.

Unlike other Fiat products, the Skudo model in the Russian market is offered exclusively with a 2-liter engine that meets the Euro-4 requirements. The second generation Multijet unit with an innovative injection system is installed under the hood of the model. Its essence lies in the supply of sequential injections of fuel at high pressure, the level of which is determined by an electronic control unit that analyzes information from sensors.

The main disadvantage of diesel units is considered a weak reaction and less smooth operation in comparison with gasoline engines. Multijet motors do not have this drawback due to the uniform combustion of fuel. The power plant makes driving easier and more comfortable, while reducing fuel consumption.

Multijet units are adapted for Russian conditions. A powerful generator, a German Webasto heater and a capacious battery make it easy to start the engine in subzero temperatures.

Fiat Scudo looks very interesting, but in terms of modernity and style, it is somewhat inferior to foreign competitors. LED light lights are not provided in the equipment of the model. There are no headlight washers here either. However, this does not prevent the car from standing out against the background of other representatives of the city stream. A lift or swing door is provided at the rear of the vehicle (depending on the equipment). The top version is equipped with a special lifting mechanism for the tailgate. One of the main advantages of the model is a spacious interior, the volume of which can be significantly expanded by dismantling the rear seats. The main problem is that the large rear door is quite difficult to close due to the high location of the hinges. The swing version is installed exclusively as an option (with the exception of a cargo van). The trunk is provided with a 12V charging.

All Fiat Skudo modifications received a front-wheel drive platform adapted to Russian roads. The front independent suspension is based on MacPherson struts, the rear suspension has crossbeams on springs. This element usually does not cause problems and lasts quite a long time. In this case, the suspension behaves in a very peculiar way. With a small load, the car "swallows" even serious potholes, and unpleasant vibrations occur at harmless joints.

Disc brakes are used on the front wheels. At the rear, the model is equipped with simplified drum brakes (diameter - 290 mm). Thanks to the hydraulic drive, the efficiency of the system is increased.

For Russians, Fiat Scudo is available exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission. The gearshift lever is close to the driver and has a smooth ride. For gasoline passenger versions (in the domestic market, only used models), a 4-speed manual transmission is available. The steering is supplemented with a hydraulic booster already in the basic configuration.

The salon of the second Fiat Skudo does not differ in some delicacies. However, it is not devoid of pleasant features. The A-pillars are positioned quite far forward and the handlebars are nearly vertical. This makes the model very similar to a passenger car. A huge number of niches appeared on the front panel for various papers and little things, the right seat became 2-seater. This decision clearly speaks of the commercial orientation of the model. The downside here is that the average passenger will feel cramped to ride because of the center console, because some of them refuse extra space in front.

The rest of the cabin looks pretty budgetary. Italian developers have offered very comfortable seats with mechanical adjustment, adjustable steering column and a comfortable front panel. The seat upholstery is made of high quality velor. The driver's seat is distinguished by good visibility and is equipped with an airbag in the minimum salary.

The main advantage of Fiat Skudo is its reasonable price with a good level of quality and great functionality. The model has quite a few drawbacks, but all of them are insignificant (weak noise insulation, sensitivity to crosswind at high speed, not very comfortable seats).

The clever design makes the Fiat Scudo a car that is perfect for both the commercial segment and the family.

Last year, in our editorial office, I took a long-term test of Fiat Ducato. Almost all editors liked it. We had at our disposal a very roomy universal car, suitable for a trip with a large company, and for the spring evacuation of all belongings in one trip at the opening of the summer season. There is, perhaps, one drawback, and that is, rather, psychological - a very bulky body.

And when already this year there was an opportunity to take Scudo for a long test, we immediately took advantage of it. Unwittingly, parallels with Ducato crept into my head. The models have one platform, its main advantage is in the layout. The powertrain and drive wheels are at the front, followed by a flat floor and a very compact leaf spring rear suspension. This results in a very low loading height. The Scudo is noticeably lower at the withers and with a more pronounced bonnet. Landing behind the wheel is closer to that of a passenger car. But it is not known which is worse: either to climb into a high Ducato chair and see far away, or to sit like in a passenger car, but at the same time have thick inclined racks in the field of lateral vision.

But with the quality of materials, and with the interior design in Scudo is much better. The plastic is also hard, but more textured, there are also many small glove compartments, but the general appearance of the dashboard is not so utilitarian. The velor upholstery of the seats contributes to the comfort of the interior. The front passenger seat, as in the Ducato, is double, without adjustments, but the second and third rows of the Scudo are much more functional. Both rows of seats consist of a double left (in the direction) part and a single right. They can be easily dismantled. All three backrests in each row are individually reclining.

Ducato and Scudo have the same power units: 120-horsepower turbodiesel and 6-speed "mechanics". The response of the engine to the gas pedal in both cases is quite adequate, but with the clarity of the inclusion of gears in the Scudo is worse. But the clutch pedal is more conveniently located. It is lighter and more informative. And the maneuverability was also surprising: the Ducato is simply amazing due to the fact that the front wheels are inverted at almost 45 degrees. The Scudo cannot boast of this, but its smoothness is light. No wonder: the Scudo is primarily a passenger vehicle, and then a utility vehicle, and the Ducato is the other way around.
