Strange? Not at all! After all, Europeans choose a car for its merits, not for its pathos. They understand that a station wagon has many advantages over a sedan, hatchback and even crossover.

In this review we will present models in price corridor from 1,000,000 to 1,400,000 rubles. All of them are spacious and comfortable. Many look attractive due to the rich equipment and decoration. Some impress with their speed data, have four-wheel drive and even adjustable ground clearance.

“Citroen C5 Tourer”

Introduced simultaneously with the second-generation “C5” sedan, the station wagon has much in common with it - a front-wheel drive layout with a transversely mounted engine and a unique “Hydractive III+” hydropneumatic suspension, in which not only the stiffness of the struts is adjusted, but also the size ground clearance. This allows the car to overcome the lousiest bumpy roads even with a serious load, and at the same time makes the “Citroen C5 Tourer” the most comfortable station wagon in its segment in terms of softness. However, we should not forget that the presence of a complex suspension also threatens significant costs for its maintenance if the car is subjected to unreasonably harsh use.

The interior is decorated with taste, high-quality materials are used here. Sound insulation is also at a high level. In top-spec models you can find such luxurious things as a massager in the seat, sun blinds on the second row... Passengers there, by the way, will be very spacious, because when designing the “C5 Tourer”, convenience was chosen as a priority, not cargo capacity . That is why the trunk of such a large model is not so large.

“Ford Mondeo Wagon”

The Mondeo, produced in very similar sedan and hatchback bodies, is very popular in Russia for its “kinetic” design - it looks solid and fast, like a business model. However, the “Mondeo Wagon” is not inferior to them in elegance!

IN technically the station wagon repeats one hundred percent basic model. The body is just as light and rigid, and the suspension provides the same composed, comfortable, sporty ride and has the option of adjusting the stiffness. Cabin sound insulation is no less effective. The engine range includes all popular engines - both the unpretentious naturally aspirated “Duratec” and the powerful, efficient “EcoBoost” (the modification with a 240-horsepower engine, by the way, is the fastest in the review - it accelerates to “hundreds” in less than eight seconds and reaches “maximum speed” is 241 km/h). The Mondeo Wagon does not have such a disadvantage of a sedan as a narrow luggage opening, and a low roof over the second row, like a hatchback. The client can only complain about not big choice configurations and the lack of special sports trim for the interior, but in principle this does not reduce the choice of options. In any case, the advanced driver assistants that came with the restyling can also be ordered for the station wagon.

- The station wagon is equipped with seven airbags in all trim levels. Also standard equipment includes ABS, traction control, recoil control and stabilization systems.
- All models are packed very generously. Even the initial “Lifestyle” has fog lights, daytime running lights, xenon headlights and turn signals in the mirrors, heated front seats and dual-zone climate control, paddle shifters and keyless entry into the cabin, electric parking brake, electric windows and mirrors, an audio system with AUX and USB connectors and steering wheel controls.

Initially created as a station wagon for European market. The model is based on the platform of the once popular here and in the USA “ Hyundai Sonata" The new car received modern economical motors, improved on-board electronics. Specialists from the Hyundai development center in Rüsselsheim worked thoroughly on fine-tuning the chassis, who managed to instill in the car completely European driving manners. They should also give credit to the design. The exterior of the “i40 Tourer” turned out to be bright and memorable, which is rare for station wagons. And the interior whimsically combines oriental slanting and strict German order, which can be felt even from the rather harsh, but perfectly tailored seats.

The “i40 Tourer” is interesting because, despite its not bloated dimensions, it is very roomy and perfectly suited for transporting cargo. The model is also captivating with its complete package - in the list of standard equipment you will find a lot of expensive equipment, which is usually offered only as options. And judging by the reviews of the owners, the station wagon turned out to be reliable and problem-free. These advantages more than compensate for the compromised ride quality of the i40 Tourer and its lackluster dynamic performance.

The diesel direction is represented by a 160-horsepower 2.0 DHT, but with both mechanical and automatic transmission, and with all-wheel drive, like the 249-horsepower versions.

The Insignia, which replaced the simple Vectra, surprised many with its high-tech, engineering courage and dynamic capabilities - qualities with which Opel cars rarely shone before. And this initiative was picked up by a modification introduced a year later with universal body, which in Rüsselsheim was called “Sports Tourer” instead of the previous “Station Wagon” for show. Of course, the new marking has nothing to do with motorsport. “Opel” only hinted that the model is aimed not at sedate “vegetable trucks,” but at the most active people who like to travel a lot.

The Insignia Sports Tourer is well suited for these purposes. Customers like the interior, which is comfortable and full of buttons, colorful lights and displays. Its rounded shape and massive central tunnel resemble sports cars. Moreover, it’s well-deserved, because under the hood there’s also quite a lot. All engines, except for the 1.8-liter old “EcoTec”, are equipped with turbocharging. The most powerful unit in the range (and, by the way, in the review), the 249-horsepower unit is also combined with a modern all-wheel drive system. A clever front suspension, steering multi-link rear plus optional adaptive FlexRide shock absorbers with adjustable stiffness make this model one of the best in the class not only for ride comfort, but also for handling in extreme conditions.

“Skoda Superb Combi”

- At “Superb Combi” engine range consists of supercharged gasoline “fours” 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI, developing 152 and 200 hp, respectively, as well as a 140-horsepower 2.0 TDI diesel engine. All cars are offered with a seven-speed DSG robot. There is also an all-wheel drive model with a 240-horsepower gasoline V6, but it is beyond the price range of the review.
- Safety is ensured by nine airbags (the initial version has seven), as well as traction control system, electronic stabilization and ABS. The “Laurent & Klement” versions add a hill climbing assistant.
- For the 152-horsepower model, only the “Elegance” package is available, which, however, does not look poor. The equipment includes dual-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, a dual-din audio system, full power accessories, parking sensors, rain and light sensors, cruise control and sunshades on the second row.
- In “Elegance Plus” the list of equipment is expanded with a keyless entry system, a tailgate drive, a smartphone interface, a panoramic roof, an alarm system and heated washer nozzles. The Laurent & Klement will also feature front parking sensors and a premium audio system.
- The “Laurent & Klement” interior is the most richly decorated and sewn - it is made of brown leather and Alcantara. “Elegance Plus” uses beige or black leather, while “Elegance” has practical textile trim.

The Czech “Superb Combi” definitely qualifies for the title of the most spacious station wagon. At first, it’s not even clear how the developers managed to design a car that provides second-row passengers with almost limousine-like legroom, holds the most luggage, and doesn’t look like a heavy van. See for yourself: the “Superb Combi” does not have the widest body, not the longest, or even the longest wheelbase...

The layout of the car explains everything. Unlike the first generation “Superb” (we are talking about a model cloned in the 2000s from the “Volkswagen Passat”, and not about the historical “koda Superb” of the period 1934-1942), the second generation has significant overhangs. By moving the power plant forward and extending the cargo part to the maximum, the engineers expanded the interior space. This was done deliberately, because the “Superb” in the “?koda” range was supposed to cover both the mid-size model segment and the business sedan niche.

So exemplary acoustic comfort and good equipment You shouldn’t be surprised at the “Combi” version - it inherited all this from the liftback. The interior is lauded for its clean, neutral design and excellent quality materials. Chassis- for energy-intensive, but not rigid suspensions. AND power unit, and the transmission are modern - they have the VW stamp on them. And the just-completed restyling added fresh stylistic details to the popular model.

“Volkswagen Passat Variant”

- The range includes models with new “BlueMotion” engines, but only fit into the price range of the review gasoline modifications with 122- and 152-horsepower TSI turbo engines volume 1.4 and 1.8 liters. In every case mechanical box you might prefer the seven-speed DSG.
- Standard six airbags, ABS and ESP stabilization system are included in the base. Top versions add a driver fatigue monitoring system and tire pressure sensors, and optionally rear side airbags.
- “Trendline” (only for 1.4 TSI) provides the essentials: audio system, air conditioning, heated seats and electric windows. Daytime running lights, light and rain sensors, dual-zone climate control will be standard on the “Comfortline” version. All models have an electric parking brake, ventilation deflectors for second-row passengers, and an electrically heated windshield.
- The most advanced “Highline” version is notable for its finishing: chrome moldings, stainless steel door sills, aluminum inserts in the cabin, interior made of leather and Alcantara... But even here there are such things as usual for rich trim levels, such as bi-xenon, parking sensors, heated rear seats and cruise control are available at extra cost.
- “Trendline” are equipped with steel rims, are distinguished by black protective moldings and simple textile upholstery. However, even for the initial modification, you can order a panoramic roof and a navigation system.


The Passat Variant has the most simple layout with a symmetrical center console.

The embodiment of rationality itself is what the modern “Passat Variant” is. This car has been continuously improved for decades, so when work began on the seventh generation, the Wolsburg engineers only repeated in the station wagon all the best that had already been done. In profile it is difficult to distinguish from its predecessor - the same almost straight “cockpit” on a relatively short wheelbase (for better maneuverability), which ends in a slightly heavy stern. The interior is painfully familiar - simple layout solutions have been preserved, ergonomics are impeccable as always, only the dashboard and trim have become more noticeable.

In technical terms, the focus is on reliability and ease of use, minimal fuel consumption and all sorts of useful things. Hence the new durable steel suspension instead of the alloy one, as on the predecessor, the most efficient small-volume turbo engines, recovery and start/stop technologies, advanced parking assistant and “smart” headlights, sensors for easy opening of the fifth door with your foot, skids for securing cargo in trunk, etc. Traditionally, Volkswagen is not too generous with basic equipment. But the principle of an “empty” model with a large list of options is the most rational. You select what you need and do not overpay for what others want to sell “in addition.”

BRIEF CHARACTERISTICS OF BASIC VERSIONS

There are four more station wagon models, and there are six in total! The first is Kalina. Moreover, both the usual one and the Cross version with a retuned suspension, increased ground clearance from 145-160 to 183 mm and protective body linings. The 1.6 liter engine produces 87, 98 or 106 horsepower, and is combined with a manual transmission, an AMT robot ( Cross version) and a 4-speed Jatco automatic (regular Kalina). The price range is 455,200 - 582,900 rubles for the regular Kalina and 525,800 - 593,600 rubles for the Cross.

Lada Largus Cross

Let’s not forget, of course, the long, dachshund-like Largus model with an enormous trunk, which also accommodates a third row of seats. Largus is offered as a cargo van with solid sides, a utility station wagon with 5-7 seats, and its “raised” Cross version, where the ground clearance is increased from 145 to 170 mm. All options have manual transmissions only, the VAZ 1.6 liter engine produces 87 hp, the imported one of the same volume produces 102. The van costs from 499,900 rubles, the station wagon from 529,900, the Cross version - from 674,900 rubles .

The Audi company does not lag behind AvtoVAZ and also offers six “sheds” at once - regular, all-terrain and “charged”. The most modest is the front-wheel drive A4 Avant with a 1.4 liter turbo engine producing 150 hp. and “robot” (from 2,050,000 rubles). But there is also a 2-liter diesel engine (150 or 190 hp) and a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine (190 or 249 hp), and all-wheel drive is already offered with these engines. It is also available by default in the A4 version. allroad quattro with increased ground clearance by 34 mm (up to 175 mm). But in Russia it has only one engine - a petrol 2-liter TFSI with 249 hp. paired with a 7-speed robot. Price - from 2,856,442 rubles.

Audi RS 6 Avant performance

In the A6 Avant (from 2,680,000 rubles) with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, 1.8, 2 and 3 liter gasoline engines produce 190, 249 or 333 horsepower, and with a 1.8 liter engine you can buy a 6-speed manual transmission . The all-terrain model A6 allroad quattro (from 3,850,000 rubles) has a ground clearance of 180 mm, adaptive air suspension and a 3-liter V6 with 333 hp. There is also a “charged” all-wheel drive S6 Avant in Russia (from 5,275,000 rubles). Its supercharged 4-liter V8 produces 450 hp. - and 4.6 seconds to 100 km/h. But the fiercest is the 605-horsepower RS ​​6 Avant performance, which goes to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reaches 305 km/h. The price matches the dynamics: from 7,660,000 rubles! By the way, next year they will also bring us the newest 450-horsepower one.

Ford in Russia has only one “universal” model - this Focus Wagon, playing in the C segment. Ground clearance - 160 mm, not bad for our roads, gasoline engines - naturally aspirated 1.6-liter (105 or 125 hp), or 1.5-liter supercharged EcoBoost with 150 hp. The engines are combined with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed PowerShift robot with two clutches.

Would this Focus be suitable for the Vesta SW competitor? It's a stretch, because it's still more expensive. Without discounts, prices today start at 926,000 rubles and end at 1,191,000 rubles.

Out of 16 Kia models, offered today in Russia, there is also only one station wagon - this is cee "d_sw, performing in the same C segment as Ford Focus. Although the “Korean” is somewhat cheaper at the start: prices for it start at 899,900 rubles, but at the finish - already 1,299,900 rubles. And you can’t catch up with Vesta.

The cee"d_sw buyer has 3 gasoline engines to choose from. The base 1.4-liter unit produces 100 hp, the 1.6-liter unit produces 130, and the top-end 1.6 GDI engine with direct injection develops 135 horsepower. The engines are combined with a manual transmission, an automatic transmission and a DCT robot - all with 6 speeds.

CLA Shooting Brake

We counted five proposals in the Russian Mercedes-Benz model range. For a petrol C-Class Estate with rear wheel drive and a 1.6 liter engine with 156 hp. or with a 4Matic transmission and a 2-liter turbo engine with 184 hp. asking from 2,270,000 rubles. There are even more lively models. For example, the more dynamic CLA Shooting Brake with a 211-horsepower gasoline engine and all-wheel drive (from 2,610,000 rubles). But it also pales in comparison to the ferocious Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4Matic with the world's most powerful production 4-cylinder engine. From a volume of only 2 liters, the Germans squeezed out 381 “horses”, 475 Nm - and acceleration to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds! The price tag for a small engine is also high, starting at 3,390,000 rubles.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain

For those who need a bigger and more impressive car, there is the E-Class Estate. The petrol 2-liter turbo engine develops 184 “horses”, there is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the price starts from 3,350,000 rubles. Although the new all-wheel drive E-Class All-Terrain is better suited for our roads, Mercedes clearly saw enough of the same all-terrain models from Audi and Volkswagen and decided to make one for themselves. Compared to the regular E-Class, the All-Terrain has 29 mm higher ground clearance, and the basic Air Body Control air suspension can change the clearance from 121 mm to 156 mm (also not a fountain, of course). Engines in Russia are only diesel: a 2-liter “four” (194 hp) and a 3-liter V6 with a return of 249 hp. It’s just a pity to drive it too much off-road, the toy is too expensive: the price starts at 4,080,000 rubles.

Do you think station wagons are boring? Then take a look at the Mini Clubman. A real dude! And where else will you find such a swinging tailgate among its brothers?! Although under the hood of the basic version of the Cooper there is less expression: there are three BMW cylinders, 1.5 liters of volume and turbocharging, allowing you to get 136 hp. Transmissions - manual and automatic, acceleration to hundreds - 9.1 seconds.

Mini JCW Clubman All4

The front-wheel drive Cooper S Clubman is already livelier: 192 hp are removed from two “turboliters”, and the all-wheel drive All4 version equipped with the same engine reaches 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. But the fastest is the “charged” JCW Clubman All4: 231 hp. and 6.3 seconds to 100 km/h. Only the prices for Mini are not “mini” at all. The cheapest is from 1,464,000 rubles, all-wheel drive costs from 2,040,000, and the JCW version is priced at least 2,310,000 rubles.

Panamera Sport Turismo

Porsche Panamera with a body for seedlings? Now - yes: in March of this year, a “universal” version of Sport Turismo was presented at the Geneva Motor Show! Although this is not quite the usual “barn”, but a shooting brake, that is, a station wagon with a more sloping rear and dynamic appearance, like a Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake. However, with the rear seats folded down, the larger trunk has a volume of 1,390 liters, a cargo tie-down system and a 230-volt power outlet. One of the distinctive features is a retractable spoiler in the tailgate, which creates up to 50 kg of additional downforce on the rear axle.

Otherwise, the station wagon repeats the regular Panamera, including the engine range with gasoline engines or a hybrid installation (330-550 hp). All Sport Turismo come initially with all-wheel drive and are equipped with the same systems as the liftback: steering rear wheels, body roll suppression system, adaptive air suspension, etc. In Russia, the Panamera Sport Turismo is expected in the middle of this fall. Dealers are already accepting orders: we will sell 5 variants of the new product at prices ranging from 6,667,000 to 10,308,000 rubles. And something tells me that they won’t transport seedlings to their dachas...

Skoda has been regularly selling several generations of the same Octavia Combi to us for years. This year, its recently updated version with a kind of “four-eyed” optics reached Russia. There are no diesel engines again - only naturally aspirated petrol engines of 1.6 (110 hp) and turbo engines of 1.4 (150 hp) and 1.8 liters (180 hp). There is a manual transmission with 5 or 6 steps, a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 7-speed DSG robot. Base prices - from 1,208,000 rubles, all-wheel drive is only available in the top.
