How do I adjust the clutch?

The main task of the clutch is to temporarily disconnect (disconnect) the engine and transmission and smoothly connect them. These operations are necessary while driving to control a manual transmission: gear shifting, stopping, braking, starting the car from a place.

In cases where the clutch pedal free play is disrupted, the car stops moving normally, various problems arise - it becomes impossible to move, the gears change with a crunch, and the car can also slip and accelerate poorly.

How to adjust the clutch. General leadership

Checking the clutch cable clearance ... Depending on the make of the vehicle, the clutch cable clearance can be checked and adjusted in different ways.

There are three main ways:

  • changing the length of the cable when the clutch lever is operating;
  • measuring the distance between the adjusting nut and the fork;
  • measuring the distance between the adjusting nut and the cable stopper.

On some vehicles, any of these methods can be used. But the measurement must necessarily be carried out between the points given in the car manual or in the operating instructions.

Checking and adjusting the clutch fork ... The vehicle must be securely lifted on ramps or stands. We also use wheel locking with a hand brake.

  1. Find the clutch cable going down from the clutch pedal and protruding through the clutch of the control lever. There are threaded bushings with two nuts located on the protruding end of the cable.
  2. The gap is the difference between the measurement when the shift lever is at rest and when it is in the inward position.
  3. To measure this, hold a ruler next to the cable between the control arm and another reference point, such as the edge of the clutch housing.
  4. Gently push the lever until it stops, align the ruler with its end and measure the distance between the lever and the starting point.
  5. We pull the lever outward and measure the distance again. We find the difference between the two measurements and compare it with the specified data from the manufacturer.
  6. If the gap needs to be adjusted, loosen the union nut on the threaded bushing, which is popularly called a lock nut (on some VW cars, this is a wing nut).
  7. Next, we turn the adjusting nut forward or backward to decrease or increase the gap, checking the measurement as necessary.
  8. Tighten the lock nut and depress the clutch pedal several times. We check the gap again, adjust if necessary.

On some vehicles with a skid plate, it can be very difficult to get to the lock nut and turn it if necessary. In this case, you will need a special wrench with a socket and a universal disk to perform this procedure.

Clearance measurement ... Measure the distance between the clutch of the operating arm and a reference point such as the edge of the clutch housing. The first operation is carried out with the control lever at rest, and then when it is in the pressed position. The difference between these two measurements is the amount of lever free play on the cable. This is the clutch cable clearance.

Another way to check and adjust ... Find the place where the clutch cable protrudes beyond the fork and nuts on the threaded bushing.

  1. Use pliers to unhook the separation spring from the clutch fork.
  2. We take the threaded end of the cable (if necessary, you can take pliers) and tighten it to a possible level, which will allow you to raise the clutch pedal to the limit.
  3. Use a ruler to measure the distance between the adjusting nut and the inner edge of the clutch yoke. This is a measurement of the gap.
  4. We compare the obtained data with the figure indicated in the vehicle operating instructions.
  5. If there is a need for adjustment, this can be done as described above.

Checking and adjusting the clutch cable ... This method is used on some older vehicles.

  1. In the fully raised position, using a block of wood, wedge the clutch pedal.
  2. Having located the location of the clutch cable, we find where the outer cable is pressed against the edge of the case.
  3. The locknut and adjusting nut are located at the end of the cable, next to the retention bracket.
  4. We hold the outer part of the cable and pull it back until it stops, which will expose the inner cable.
  5. Using a ruler, measure the length of the exposed part of the cable between the end of the cable and the adjusting nut. This is a measurement of the clutch cable clearance.
  6. We compare the obtained data with the data specified by the manufacturer and, if necessary, adjust.
  7. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting nut either backward or forward to obtain the optimum value.
  8. Tighten the lock nut and measure again.

Checking and adjusting the hydraulic clutch ... Many hydraulic couplings are self-adjusting, but some designs allow manual adjustments to compensate for friction plate wear.

  1. If the hydraulic clutch is adjustable, the tappet on the slave cylinder will be threaded and fitted with a lock nut.
  2. We lift the car securely onto the ramp or axle stands.
  3. We climb under the car and find the clutch slave cylinder and its adjustable pusher.
  4. Use pliers to unhook the separation spring from the fork. Push the clutch fork forward until it stops.
  5. Holding it in this position, use a ruler to measure the distance between the end of the slave cylinder housing and the clutch fork.
  6. Let go of the plug, and then measure the distance again while it is at rest.
  7. The difference between these two measurements is the clutch clearance. We compare this with the figure that is given in the car manual and, if necessary, adjust it.
  8. The locknut and adjusting nut are located on the threaded end of the tappet. Loosen the lock nut.
  9. We turn the adjusting nut screw towards the slave cylinder to increase the clearance, or towards the clutch fork to reduce it. When the measurement is correct, tighten the lock nut.
  10. We check it again and, if necessary, adjust it again.

How to adjust the clutch on the VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112

1) ... We put the car on a level surface and turn on the parking brake. Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

2) ... Next, using a ruler installed perpendicular to the accelerator and the floor, we measure the distance of the drive stroke. We measure the distance from the floor to the place where the rubber pad on the accelerator begins. In cases where this distance is more or less than 16 cm, then it will be necessary to make an adjustment.

3) ... So, we open the hood of the car, after which we find the fastening of the system cable with a pedal. As a rule, it is located opposite the driver's seat. Pay attention to 2 nuts located at the end of this cable. In the photo they are marked with numbers 1 and 2. We unscrew the nut number 1, but not to the end, and tighten or unscrew the second, until the desired free speed of the accelerator, that is, until the stroke is equal to 12-13 cm.

4) ... Please note that when the second nut is loosened, the free play will increase, and when tightened, it will decrease.

5) ... Then we sit in the driver's seat and press the clutch pedal several times until the very end, after which we lower it. We do this again and check the free wheeling indicator. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated.

6) ... After the clutch is adjusted, push the stop sleeve into the fork until it stops.

7) ... This completes the adjustment process.

How to adjust the clutch on a VAZ 2108, 2109, 2199

1) ... When the pedal is depressed, it is necessary to measure the distance from the floor to its lower edge using a tape measure. It should be in the range of 18-20 centimeters.

3) ... From the obtained first result of 18-20 cm, we subtract the result of the second measurement of 6-7 cm. As a result, we get 13-14 cm. For cars of the VAZ 2108 and VAZ 2109 brands, this value is considered normal.

4) ... In cases where this value differs in one direction or another, then it will be necessary to re-adjust the clutch. That is, we either tighten or weaken.

5) ... We hold the adjusting nut with one key, and with the second we slightly loosen the lock nut.

6) ... Turning the adjusting nut clockwise, we increase the pedal travel, in connection with which it should move down.

7). We make measurements and in cases of a satisfactory result, tighten the lock nut and this work can be considered complete. But if not, then you will need to do this operation again.

How to adjust the clutch on Lada Kalina?

1) ... Open the hood and remove the air filter. To do this, unscrew the bolts securing the air filter housing to the hood. Then we disconnect the mass air flow sensor. Next, unscrew the clamp and remove the air filter housing.

2) ... We take out the cable by the threaded end to the maximum possible distance. In this case, it will be necessary to overcome the resistance provided by the spring attached to the PS.

3) ... Holding the cable in this position, using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the plastic leash and the fork lever. It should be 2.7 cm.

4) ... In cases where the distance does not match, then using an open-end wrench, either tighten or loosen the tension nut.

6) ... After the distance is adjusted, we install the air filter in place.

How to adjust the clutch on a VAZ 2107

To adjust the clutch of the VAZ 2107, you need to drive into a pit or overpass. But in cases where this is not possible, then the car is installed on supports using a jack, in compliance with all safety measures.

1) ... Free travel must be adjusted so that the distance from the upper position of the pedal to the stop is equal to 0.4 - 2 millimeters. Otherwise, it will need to be configured. Using a key "10" unscrew the nut for the stopper limiter and by turning it set the required clearance.

2) ... If the VAZ 2107 engine system provides fuel injection, then it will be necessary to remove the protective shield.

3) ... Before applying a lubricant mixture to the thread of the pusher, we clean it from dirt.

4) ... We check the stroke of the pusher, since the stroke of the release bearing depends on it. We squeeze the fork back until it stops, the pusher travel should be four to five millimeters. Since a significant effort is needed, it is better to disconnect the spring from the lever.

5) ... The pusher travel is adjustable with a key "17". It is also necessary to restrain the adjusting nut of the pusher from turning, but loosen the lock nut with a key "13".

6) ... Fixing the pusher with the "8" key, set the required 4-5 millimeters with the "17" key.

7) ... We fix the lock nut.

8) ... We check the pedal stroke, which should be about 30 millimeters from its upper position until the moment it is turned off. If necessary, you can perform the operation again.

How to adjust the clutch on the Lada Priore?

There are two ways to measure the required position of the cable.

The first method consists in orientation along the clutch pedal, the movement of which should be within 125 - 123 millimeters. But the second method is to measure the length of the cable coming out of the casing. When released, it should be 27 millimeters.

In most cases, drivers use the first option, which is more reliable. It is the procedure for the first option that we will describe in detail.

1) ... Using a 17-inch spanner, unscrew the lock nut, which fixes the cable cover in the box socket.

3) ... Using a threaded plastic tip, we correct the slack in the cable. We fasten without tightening the nuts and check for the softness of the gears. In cases where the clutch is adjusted correctly, the nuts can also be fixed.
