The Kaliningrad plant AVTOTOR has begun production of the fourth generation of the popular KIA Sportage crossover. The car has received significant changes in the interior and exterior, is produced with all-wheel or front-wheel drive and is equipped with engines of the Euro-6 standard. For the first time, the GT-Line specification has been developed for the KIA Sportage crossover. Sales of the new version of one of the most popular cars in Russia will begin on April 1, 2016.
The design of the model was developed by the European design studio KIA, in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) with the participation of design centers in Korean Namyang and North American Irvine. Visually, the front end of the KIA Sportage has undergone the greatest external changes. KIA's signature tiger nose grille and headlights are spaced apart. The headlights are positioned higher and are much more extended along the outer edges of the bonnet. The radiator grille is positioned lower than before and is noticeably wider. As a result, the appearance of the new Sportage emphasizes its stability, although the overall width of the crossover has not changed compared to its predecessor at 1,885 mm. The new KIA Sportage retains its recognizable profile, but has a larger wheelbase (now 2,670 mm) and an overall length increased by 40 mm (4,480 mm). The overall height has increased by 10 mm and is 1,645 mm.
The new GT-Line models feature LED ice cube fog lights. Also, they are equipped with the lower protection of the front part of the engine compartment, decorated "aluminum".
The rear of the new Sportage has more pronounced horizontal surfaces and sharply defined contour lines. Narrow combination lanterns are horizontally elongated and connected by a strip. Direction indicators and reversing lights are made in separate blocks. For the GT-Line specification, it is possible to fit twin muffler pipes and a metal-like lower diffuser under the rear bumper.
The power structure of the body of the new Sportage has become stronger, primarily due to the use of ultra-high-strength steels. In the body structure of the third generation Sportage, their share was 18%, in the new model it was increased to 51%. This improved overall rigidity and more efficient distribution of impact loads throughout the body structure. The body rigidity of the fourth generation KIA Sportage has increased by 39% compared to the predecessor model.
The increase in strength is also provided by an increase in the number of parts manufactured by hot stamping. Stronger types of steel are used, in particular, to strengthen the roof pillars, sills, roof structural elements and wheel arches.
For the first time in history, a Sportage can be equipped with the new 1.6 T-GDI direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, which is exclusively available on the GT-Line. Versions with a 2-liter turbo diesel and a naturally aspirated 2.0 MPI petrol engine will also be available.
The fourth generation Sportage 1.6 T-GDI can be equipped with the new 7-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission. KIA's new transmission is capable of delivering more torque from turbocharged engines. Cars with a 2.0 MPI engine are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Diesel modifications are equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
