Compared to the majority of car manufacturers, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant (VAZ) is a relatively young enterprise. Since the decision on Fiat cooperation had already been made (the first Zhiguli model was made on the basis of Fiat-124), construction was carried out according to a technical project of the Italians, and a contract was signed with them for the supply of basic technological equipment and further training of specialists. The Zhiguli was conceived as a people's car, which, at a relatively low price, could reduce the incredible queues of Soviet citizens wishing to have their own transport.

The first six VAZ-2101 Zhiguli cars were produced on April 19, 1970. The mass production of Kopek began in August, and by the end of the year, 21,530 Edinichek had been produced. The first models had a four-cylinder engine with a volume of 1198 cm³ of 60 hp and a maximum speed of 140 km / h. Objectively, the VAZ-2101 surpassed other Soviet production cars of the turn of the sixties - seventies in terms of technical level and quality, especially in interior trim, but in terms of durability and maintainability, it was inferior to them. VAZ-2101 was produced until 1982.

In 1972, the second model of the Volga Automobile Plant came out - VAZ-2102 - a five-door station wagon, produced until 1985. The popularity and fame of the "best friend of summer residents" eventually passed to the VAZ-2102 receiver represented by the fourth VAZ model.

In the same year, the production of "Treshka" - VAZ-2103 (Lada 1500 in export version) began. Its basic 72-horsepower engine made it possible to reach a speed of 100 km / h in 17 seconds, making the model the most dynamic of the mass Soviet cars of those years and comparable in dynamics to Western counterparts. For 12 years, 1 304 899 cars of the "third" model were produced. It is worth noting a very interesting modification, which, however, was not accepted - the VAZ-2103 Porsche. The VAZ-2103 version proposed by Porsche in 1976 without all the chrome parts. For a long time, the VAZ-2103 was deservedly considered a comfortable, reliable and dynamic car, and some connoisseurs of the brand consider it the most elegant and stylish model of the VAZ in general.

The very first VAZ-2106 car was assembled in December 1975, and the mass production of new items began on the third line of the conveyor on February 21, 1976. On December 28 of the same year, a copy of this model became the three millionth car produced by the Volga Automobile Plant, and on June 3, 1978 . - four million. On May 17, 1979, one of the VAZ-2106, sent to Czechoslovakia, became the millionth Soviet car delivered to the CMEA countries. No one could have imagined such a superpopularity of an indistinguishable car that replaced the third model. Relatively powerful engine VAZ-2106 with a volume of 1.6 liters and 75 hp. allowed a maximum speed of 152 km / h. This model was produced until 2006. Small-scale production of the VAZ-2105 began in October 1979, full-scale deployed in January 1980 and lasted until December 30, 2010. "Five" became the second generation of "Zhiguli", equipped with a 1.29 liter carburetor engine with a power of 63.6 hp. and a 4-speed gearbox. About 14 modifications were produced, which differed from the basic version in various engines. Among them, we can highlight the sports LADA 2105 VFTS (LADA-VFTS) - with a 1.6-liter forced engine, 160 hp. (at 7000 rpm), 164.8 N.m (at 5500 rpm)) and spur 4 and 5-speed gearboxes and raliy LADA 2105 VIHUR.

In March 1982, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began production of the VAZ-2107, which became the last model of the "classic". The seventh model was based on the VAZ-2105, but in a more luxurious and modern design. The 1.6-liter engine with a central fuel injection system made the "Seven" the fastest of the "classic" VAZ family (top speed 176 km / h). This car is also one of the best-selling cars in the post-Soviet market thanks to its simplicity, reliability and, of course, low price. After the complete closure of LADA 2107 production in Russia on April 17, 2012, this model continues to be manufactured in Egypt by the Lada-Egypt enterprise.

Serial production of the car VAZ-2104 ("Fours") was launched at the Volga Automobile Plant in the second half of 1984. The model VAZ-2105 was taken as a basis, which differed in the minimum production costs and the maximum consumer effect. 4-stroke 1198 cc 58 hp carbureted engine with belt-driven camshaft The new model has a tailgate that opens upwards and a folding rear seat, which allows to increase the volume of the luggage compartment from 375 to 1340 liters.

The leaders of foreign communist parties needed new jobs, and the construction of a plant in Togliatti solved their problems. built a plant, provided all the necessary documentation, consulted with VAZ engineers and participated in the development of new models. The first batch of logos was also produced in Italy, which has increased interest among collectors.

The prototype of the VAZ 2101 was the FIAT 124 model 1966 with a 1.2-liter engine and entry-level interior trim. In 1965 it won the title of "Car of the Year".

On January 3, 1967, the construction of the Volga Automobile Plant was announced by the All-Union Shock Komsomol Construction Project. Thousands of people were sent to the construction, mostly young people. And on January 27 of the same year, the first cubic meter of land was taken out for the construction of the first workshop.

Since 1969, labor collectives began to form, the installation of equipment produced at 844 domestic factories and 900 factories of the Commonwealth, by firms from Italy, Germany, England, the USA, France and other countries, continued.

The Zhiguli were very similar to the Fiat 124, but it was only in appearance.
The vehicles were assembled from fully localized parts, with no supply from Fiat. But some of the parts were not produced in the USSR, but in other socialist countries. For example, in 1967 in Poland, the Polski Fiat 125P, very similar to the Zhiguli, was already produced, it could carry Latin symbols, which was the reason for the appearance of the legend of Fiat kopecks.
Later, parts from the USSR began to be supplied to Polish Fiats, for example, recessed door handles.
The FIAT design underwent many changes before becoming Zhiguli. Even in the early stages of testing, it was clear that Fiat was not for our roads. Its body was very weak, it had to be strengthened, as well as the suspension.
The ground clearance was increased from 164 to 175 mm, the rear disc brakes were replaced with drum brakes, more durable and protected from the effects of sand and dirt. As testified by the testers, the rear pads were enough for 500-600 km on a bad road, they were simply erased to metal. The door handles were made recessed, which made them harmless, a rear-view mirror appeared outside.

The camshaft moved from bottom to top, the distance between the cylinders increased, while maintaining the engine displacement of 1.2 liters, the cylinder diameter was increased from 73 to 76 mm with a power of 64 hp.
In the transmission, the diameter of the clutch disc was increased from 182 to 200 mm. The three-link suspension has been changed to a five-bar suspension. Instead of two jacks on the sides, there are four.
A hole appeared in the front bumper under the "curve" starter, fangs and towing eyes appeared. The seats, in contrast to the Fiat ones, began to unfold. In total, more than 800 changes were made, which significantly strengthened the structure, and made it 90 kg heavier, from 855 to 945 kg.

The bulk of the modifications were made by Italian specialists, with the participation of Soviet ones, which made it possible to learn from the experience and use it in subsequent developments.

On October 28, 1970, the first echelon with Zhiguli was sent to Moscow. With an estimated construction of 6 years, the plant was launched 3 years earlier.

On March 24, 1971, the State Commission accepted the first stage in operation, which will produce 220,000 vehicles per year.

In 1971, the export of Zhiguli to Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and the German Democratic Republic began. Later in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Egypt, Great Britain, Nigeria.
Due to the different languages ​​of buyers, the name "Zhiguli" was changed to "LADA" / "LADA".

In the 70s "Zhiguli" were the most comfortable and reliable of the Soviet cars. It was prestigious to have a Zhiguli, it spoke of well-being and prosperity in the family. But at first they were a little afraid of the Zhiguli, due to insufficient experience in servicing.

Among the positive features of the "Zhiguli" were: a small amount of maintenance work, the drivers were surprised that in winter they did not need to drain the water at night, they first learned the taste of antifreeze and received wheels for the whole year. Also, "Zhiguli" was distinguished by smooth running, good dynamics and controllability, which made it possible to overtake the "Muscovites" and "Volga" forever. The interior was comfortable, the interior heater worked perfectly. It was also pleasing that in the USSR they learned how to make fittings and high-quality fasteners, after buying a Zhiguli there was no need to stretch it. The build quality at the beginning of production was excellent, but in subsequent years it deteriorated, not only at VAZ, but also in the industry as a whole.

In 1974, an updated version of the "Zhiguli" - VAZ 21011 was released, with a 1.3-liter engine and 69 hp.

For 13 years of production, about 3 million VAZ 2101 cars were produced. The production of VAZ 21011 was discontinued in 1981, 2101 in 82, later only a modification of the VAZ 21013 was produced.

VAZ 2101 and sports.

At the beginning of 1971, a racing modification "Zhiguli" was released, it took part in the European rally "TOUR EUROPE - 71", where our team won the silver cup. With participation in the subsequent competitions "TOUR OF EUROPE - 73" Soviet athletes won gold and silver.

In road-ring races "Kopeyka" took part for the first time in 1972 in the USSR championship. In those days, no one yet knew how to force VAZ engines, and the Muscovites had the advantage on the highways. But over time, the secret of forcing the "Zhiguli" was unraveled, the riders learned how to prepare their VAZs, and the AZLK teams were no longer able to resist the "kopecks" and fell behind forever.

At the races of the "Cup of Friendship of the Socialist Countries" things were not very good. Three Czechoslovak riders won any race in their factory Skoda 130 RS, only swapping places in the top three. Powerful and lightweight Skodas were created specifically for the ring. Soon they switched to other European competitions, and their place was taken by other athletes from Czechoslovakia, on our Ladas. They drank a lot of blood from our riders, but still it was possible to win them, this was proved more than once by Soviet athletes.

Interestingly, the factory racers often had to share medals with "loners" from other cities. They made up strong competition in the races. And all because there was no professional sport in the USSR, they could only be engaged in having defended the shift at the machine. And the sports sections of VAZ were not subdivisions of the plant, but just clubs of motorists, and the invaluable experience of improvements was very rarely embodied in improving the design of production cars.

What was the tuning VAZ 2101 in the early 70s?

Our motorists knew how to negotiate with the heads of various large firms that had access to abroad. Reinforced and modified camshafts were brought to us especially for the competition. They were brought from different countries, of course everything was illegal, and therefore tuning the Zhiguli was very expensive. Camshafts were brought to someone, they were changed to a rigid suspension, which, in turn, were changed to other parts, more reinforced. The rubber was from "space", i.e. unavailable, enrolled in the queue several months in advance.

Some "Kulibins" made camshafts according to their technology, changed, sold. They also made homemade magnesium discs, which were very expensive in Europe.

Only in our time, tuning parts have become generally available, and we can choose any part to fit our parameters. Thanks to those people who, in the early 70s, were not afraid to achieve better performance from their "kopecks", they were Soviet athletes and enthusiasts !!!

The preparation of the technical project was entrusted to the Italian automobile concern "Fiat". On January 3, 1967, the Central Committee of the Komsomol announced the construction of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant as an All-Union shock Komsomol construction site. On December 22, 2006, AVTOVAZ signed a framework contract with the Canadian company Magna International on cooperation in the development of a new platform for Lada cars and the organization of a new car assembly plant in Togliatti. It was planned that the total cost of the project will be $ 1.6-1.7 billion; the total capacity of the plant will be 440 thousand vehicles per year. These plans for 2009 were not implemented.
In 2007, AVTOVAZ was going to modernize its production facilities. To this end, the company intends to attract about $ 900 million in investments through cooperation with the automotive corporation Renault. In general, the design of "Fiat 124" has undergone more than 800 modifications, which in essence served to adapt the VAZ 2101 to Soviet roads. So, the VAZ 2101 was distinguished by an increased ground clearance, a reinforced body and suspension, an opening for the engine crank, as well as drum brakes, which ensure their longer-term operation. The rear suspension has now become a new five-bar suspension. The design of the synchronizers in the gearbox was improved, the clutch linings (by 18mm) received a larger outer diameter. The front clearance has also increased (by 11mm). The drive axle has been completely modernized.
The Fiat 124 engine has also been redesigned. The VAZ 2101 engine was distinguished by a transferred camshaft (now it became the upper one), an increased distance between the cylinders (thanks to this change, the engine volume subsequently increased), as well as a cylinder diameter changed by 3 mm (upward), which made the engine short-stroke.

Also, some modernization of the car's design was made: a rear-view mirror was added on the outside, towing eyes, "fangs" on the bumpers, wide doors and a large trunk were installed. In the interior, special recesses were made for the door handles. In addition, the front seats were now foldable.
After all the modifications, the weight of the VAZ 2101 was 945kg, which is 90kg more than the weight of the Fiat 124.
Also, on the basis of the VAZ 2101, all subsequent models of the "classic" family were created.
VAZ 2101 had several modifications. In particular, the VAZ 21011 model was equipped with a 1.3 liter engine, while its design was largely changed and its own engine was installed. The VAZ 21013 model was an analogue of the VAZ 21011, but it was equipped with an engine from the VAZ 2101. The VAZ 21016 model, unlike the VAZ 21013, was equipped with a VAZ 21011 engine, but the design was similar to the VAZ 2101. The VAZ 21018 and VAZ 21019 cars were already equipped with rotary engines. Export models were also produced with a right-hand drive - VAZ 21012 (based on VAZ 2101) and VAZ 21014 (based on VAZ 21011).
By order of the police, a separate model was created - VAZ 2101-94, made on the basis of the VAZ 2101 with a more powerful engine from the VAZ 2103.
Over the history of the production of VAZ 2101, more than 2.7 million units were produced.

VAZ 2102

VAZ 2102 is a licensed version of the Fiat 124 Familiare, with numerous differences similar to the base model VAZ-2101. The first car VAZ-2102 rolled off the assembly line of the Volga Automobile Plant in 1971. Then, after the start of production of the successor - "Four" VAZ-2104 in 1984, both cars were produced simultaneously for another year until the withdrawal of "Two" from production in the summer of 1985.

The new model was largely unified with the base VAZ-2101 sedan. The dashboard and driver's workplace are identical to those of the VAZ-2101. The tailgate rim is raised to the bumper and is flush with the floor for easy loading and unloading. The solid rear seat folds out for a horizontal cargo area. The license plate is located on the rear door, the taillights are positioned vertically. The technical level of the station wagons at that time was distinguished by poor sealing of the cabin from dust from the side of the rear door and gasoline vapors through the neck of the gas tank. For a larger passenger-and-freight VAZ-2102, the suspension springs and shock absorbers were additionally reinforced, which made it possible to maintain a carrying capacity of 250 kg with two passengers (or 60 kg with five passengers), while the curb weight of the car in comparison with the VAZ-2101 sedan increased by 55 kg.
The car was equipped with a 64 hp gasoline engine. with., running on gasoline AI-93. Due to the increased load on the engine and clutch, the gear ratio of the main pair was increased from 3.9 to 4.4, using the so-called cargo gear.
In 1978, the production of a modification of the VAZ-21021 with a four-cylinder 69-horsepower VAZ-21011 engine was launched. It was intended primarily for export, just like the VAZ-21023 with a VAZ-2103 carburetor engine with a power of 71 hp. In the export version, the VAZ-2102 car was equipped with a glass wiper and a glass washer for the rear cargo door, seats from the VAZ-2106 with head restraints.
In the future, the plant carried out the following modernization of cars:
until 1977, on generators, negative diodes were pressed into the cover;
in 1983, changes were made to the electrical part;
carburetors 2101 were modernized in 1974 and produced until 1976, the third series (2101-1107010-03) - from 1976 to 1978. Since 1980, new carburetors 2105-1107010-20 (type "OZON") have been mounted on the machines.
In 1980, the modernization of the model range was carried out: they began to install a new ignition distributor of type 30.3706-01, a 2-liter glass washer reservoir and a foot switch on the washer on all models, as on the VAZ-21011.
In the period from 1982 to 1984, together with the valve drive lever, the camshafts were nitrided to provide increased corrosion resistance, wear resistance and resistance to alternating loads. The problem of rapid wear of the camshafts was solved only with the transition to technology with bleaching the cams, which closed the topic of the terrible shortage of this part in the late 1970s - first half of the 1980s. The difference between such camshafts is the hexagonal belt between the third and fourth cams.
Since 1983, for some of the VAZ-21023 cars produced, the electrical equipment of the front of the car was performed according to the scheme of the VAZ-21013 sedan. Taking into account the western trend, since 1986, fuel tanks have been installed without drain plugs.

VAZ 2103

The Fiat 124, which became the prototype of the VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103 models, was first presented to the public in 1964. When signing the contract on the project of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, it was agreed that Fiat would provide, along with the technical project of the plant, complete documentation for two cars ("norm" and "luxury"). Fiat offered ready-made solutions: as an author. No. 1 ("norm") - FIAT 124, and the author. No. 2 ("luxury") - FIAT 125. But then FIAT 124 was taken as a prototype for both cars, since at the request of the USSR, unification between both cars was needed about 80 percent. The cars were shown to the Soviet side and received approval - work on both projects immediately began.

In 1972, VAZ launched production of a more powerful version of the Zhiguli compared to the VAZ-2101, the VAZ-2103. The differences in the interior trim of the 2103 from the VAZ-2101 were significant: the space above the head was increased by 15 mm, and the distance from the ceiling to the seat was 860 mm. The instrument panel, in which the clock and tachometer are installed, has been changed.
Like all classic sedans, the VAZ-2103 Zhiguli have the same drawbacks, such as: inconvenience of loading luggage due to the high rear panel, a small "glove compartment" without illumination, low light in the cabin, etc. From the point of view of modern ergonomics, the differences from the "penny" seem ridiculous. Until 1980, the glass washer pump was of the foot type.
Leatherette seats with low backs were not even equipped with head restraints, and the interior was never actually modernized, and by the end of production (1984) it was significantly outdated, more precisely, it became "unfashionable". Although it must be admitted, the build quality in those days was higher: for example, the size of the gaps of the body panels and the fit of the doors did not cause any complaints.
Retaining the ground clearance - 170 mm under the rear axle crankcase, the car, due to the lower than that of the "Moskvich", "precipitation" of the body on an uneven dirt road clings with the exhaust manifold to all the bumps and "combs". At the same time, the behavior on the road is typical for the "classic": the car does not behave quite correctly - the "soft" suspension and, as a result, the lubricated feedback of the "steering" make it difficult to control at full speed on a slippery road. This did not prevent him from being considered the most progressive design until the appearance of front-wheel drive VAZs.
The family cars are distinguished by angular fenders, rectangular headlights, and more functional bumpers. In the cabin, a modernized instrument panel, in which a voltmeter appeared. The ventilation system differs from the previous ones by the presence of rectangular deflectors. Heated rear window is standard. The fuse and relay box is located in the engine compartment. The interior has undergone significant changes: a new dashboard, new seats and door trim. From 1982 to 1984, together with valve rockers made of 40X steel, the camshafts were nitrided to increase wear resistance instead of HFC hardening, which provided increased corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high resistance to alternating loads. Since 1985, camshafts with bleaching cams have been installed. These shafts have a hexagonal ring between the third and fourth cams. VAZ-2108 is a small class passenger car with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. Produced by the Volga Automobile Plant. Currently not produced. The cars of the first releases suffered, as is customary, "childhood diseases", which the plant got rid of right in the course of production, on consumers. He is able to cover 150 thousand km without any problems (provided that the owner does not have a racing temperament). The only thing you have to put up with is the frequent replacement of the oil filter and the need to service the ignition and adjust the valves only at the service station. The VAZ-21083 modification, produced since 1987, is equipped with a 1.5 liter carburetor engine. VAZ-21083i - an injection engine with a working volume of 1.5 liters. A little later, for export to some countries, they began production of the VAZ-21081 modification with an in-line 4-cylinder petrol 1.1-liter 53-horsepower not too temperamental engine. These modifications are increasingly common on the roads, as well as the 2-liter 150-horsepower versions of the VAZ-21106 CTi are quite economical, expressive and expensive. Still, because the Opel X20XEV engine with a twin-shaft 16-valve cylinder head and a point injection system allows you to accelerate to 205 km / h. With it, a hundred-kilometer barrier is overcome in just 9.5 seconds. There is also a combat 240-strong (!) VAZ-21107 "Rally" 2.0 V16 with a special roll cage built into the body. Modern interior design (which is still not as neat as that of foreign counterparts), good aerodynamics, a spacious luggage compartment (480 liters) with ample transformation possibilities (a hatch in the rear seat and a trunk lid that reaches the bumper allow you to transport long loads), a high degree of maintainability - all this is in favor of the VAZ-2110.
The front-wheel drive "tenth" family from Togliatti, designed from a sheet, is, of course, a new word in the domestic automotive industry. VAZ 2113, hatchback 3 door

The three-door hatchback VAZ-2113 appeared largely due to the numerous appeals of motorists to the management of AvtoVAZ with a request to resume the production of front-wheel drive small cars with a three-door hatchback body. After the termination of production of the VAZ-21083, there was no adequate replacement for it, but an impressive demand for a car remained on the market.

According to popular belief, the production of the "eight" is more expensive than the "nines", since the former has more original parts, and it is preferable to produce the VAZ-2109 and VAZ-21099, which have a lot of common body and interior parts. A similar situation has developed with Samara-2, so the VAZ-2115 sedan was first put into production, and then the VAZ-2114 five-door hatchback. To master the three-door hatchback, AvtoVAZ and its subsidiaries had to additionally organize the production of 17 original parts. Perhaps because of this, the initial terms of the development of the VAZ-2113 (2002) were repeatedly revised.
The three-door five-seat hatchback of the SAMARA-2 family - VAZ-2113, based on the LADA 2108 car, appeared in mass production only in the fall of 2004. The model differs from its predecessors (VAZ-2108) in the front part of the body with original headlights, a modified shape of the hood and front fenders. The interior was also updated, a new dashboard appeared, all this creates the perception of the upgraded car as a new model.
The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter injection power unit that meets Euro-2 standards. Since 2007 it has been produced with a 1.6 liter engine that meets Euro-3 standards.
The main engine for the Samara-2 family gradually became an 8-valve 1.5-liter VAZ-2111 engine with a distributed injection system, although the first batches of VAZ-2115 were equipped mainly with a 21083 carburetor engine, but the 16-valve 2112 on "Samara-2" was never officially put.
VAZ-2113 comes in three configuration options: "standard", "norm" and "luxury". The latter provides an on-board computer, rear seat head restraints, anti-glare rear mirrors, athermal glass, two-tone horns and fog lights.

VAZ 2114, hatchback 5 door

VAZ-2114 "Lada 2114" is a five-door hatchback of the Volga Automobile Plant, created on the basis of the VAZ 2109 car. It was created in the mid-90s as part of the development of the Samara-2 family. This car is a modified VAZ-21093 with the front part from the well-known VAZ-2115 model (optics, radiator grille, front spoiler) and with a slightly modified rear body design (rear bumper changed, additional brake light installed). The bumpers are body-colored with side moldings and sill fairings. A new instrument panel (the so-called "europanel"), an adjustable steering column, a steering wheel from the "tenth" family, and a new design heater are installed in the VAZ 2114 cabin. When the rear seat is folded, the car is transformed into a cargo-passenger version, similar to a "station wagon". The car is equipped with power windows, tinted glass, fog lights, heated seats, central door locking, and alloy wheels.
The first copies of the VAZ 2114 were assembled at the factory assembly line in 2000, in 2001 a pilot batch of 50 vehicles was assembled. Serial production of the car began in 2003.
The aerodynamics of the VAZ-2114 is similar to that of the VAZ-2115, in which Cx has slightly decreased, the lift has decreased and its distribution along the axes has noticeably improved. The drag coefficient Cx of the updated hatchback has decreased only slightly - 0.45 versus 0.46 for the usual "nine". But the balance of lifting forces has changed radically: the total lifting force has slightly increased, but it is now evenly distributed along the axes. And this promises a more balanced car behavior at high speed.
An injection engine of 1.5 liters is installed on the car. (VAZ 2111) with distributed fuel injection, which improves dynamic properties and improves fuel efficiency.
Since 2007, a new 1.6-liter engine (VAZ-11183) of the Euro-3 ecological class has been installed on the car, the model receives the VAZ-21144 index. Distinctive features from the old engine - the catalyst is not under the bottom, but near the engine, a plastic decorative cover is put on the engine, a plastic one is installed instead of an aluminum receiver. In addition to the new engine, the car receives a new dashboard (the upper part goes without a glove compartment, which increases strength and reduces the occurrence of extraneous noise), a new instrument panel with an on-board computer function (shows the temperature overboard, voltage in the on-board network, current time and other parameters).
It is produced in 2 trim levels - "Standard" or "Lux". Externally, the "luxury" versions are distinguishable from the "standard" ones only by the fog lights and wheel caps. In the interior - the headrests of the rear sofa. In addition, the seats and doors have more pleasant (but at the same time soiled) upholstery, and instead of a plug on the center console, a trip computer is installed that records fuel consumption, travel time and average speed.

VAZ-2115 / Lada Samara is a four-door front-wheel drive sedan developed by the Volga Automobile Plant).
The updated VAZ-2115 sedan was created as part of the Samara-2 project, which was developed in the early 90s. Moreover, thinking primarily about the new appearance of front-wheel drive cars, Tolyatti did not forget about aerodynamics. Therefore, in 1993, the VAZ design team arrived at the Dmitrov auto testing ground - the VAZ team decided to work on the style of the updated cars right in the wind tunnel!
We started by removing the standard bumpers from ordinary cars VAZ-21093 and VAZ-21099, and in their place they fitted new ones that were molded from plasticine. The designers rounded the corners of the plasticine bumpers noticeably, and along the lower edge of the side doors, they placed developed sill moldings, "flowing" to the edges of the fenders. Using the same technology, a new, slightly longer and sharper "muzzle" was made. A small wing on the trunk lid complemented the look.
After several "blowing" sessions in the wind tunnel, during which the shape of all the parts was optimized, the designers came up with the final version of the plasticine "armor". And we went back to Togliatti. A few months later, the "live" Samara-2, embodied in metal and plastic, was brought to Dmitrov! These were hatchbacks VAZ-2113 and VAZ-2114 - an alternative to the "eights" and "nines" - and the sedan VAZ-2115, which was supposed to replace the "ninety-ninth" model. The residents of Togliatti were generally satisfied with the results of the blowing of cars and were already going to prepare Samara-2 for mass production. It was 1994.
Then came the crisis. The main forces and means at the plant were thrown into the finishing work on the "top ten", and the financing of the Samara-2 project was severely cut. And as a result, out of three cars, it was decided to bring only the VAZ-2115 to serial production. It took almost two years for this. Only in 1996, the "fifteenth" began to be produced in small batches in the pilot production of VAZ. Since 2001, assembly has begun on the factory conveyor.
In comparison with its predecessor (VAZ-21099) - VAZ 2115 lengthened by 225 mm. The exterior of the car has noticeably changed - the front and rear parts have been changed, the interior has been updated, while the sidewalls, doors and the roof remain the same. The new model features a front part of the body with original headlights, a modified shape of the hood and front fenders, new taillights with an insert between them, body-colored bumpers, a trunk spoiler with an additional brake light, door moldings, sill fairings, a new trunk lid with floor-level connector. New effective lighting technology is envisaged.
A number of design solutions were borrowed from the "tenth" family of VAZs - an adjustable steering column, upper attachment points for front seat belts, a combination of devices. The rear number of the car, as well as on the "ten", is located on the bumper.
The car is equipped with 1.5 and 1.6 liter gasoline engines. Initially, modifications were produced with a carburetor engine. But in 2001, a modification came out with an engine with distributed fuel injection. To improve durability and reduce idle noise, a new clutch disc with idle damper is provided.
The display unit of the on-board monitoring system carries information about the closing of the door locks, the unfastened seat belts, the limit wear of the brake pads, the left ignition key, the level of oil, coolant and washer fluids. The applied new design of the heater provides efficient heating of the passenger compartment.
The following VAZ-2115 configurations are provided - "standard" (VAZ-21150-20), "norm" (VAZ-21150-21) and "luxury" (VAZ-21150-22).

VAZ 2121 Niva


VAZ-2121 is completely original, purely VAZ design, entirely developed by factory engineers. The car was born in those distant years, as they say, in one breath. In 1972, the first two "crocodiles" quickly proved their right to a worthy place in the sun.
The following year, the car acquired a metal roof and its own, which soon became famous, the name - "Niva". The case progressed so quickly that in January 1974 the car was submitted for state testing. And in the hot sands of Turkmenistan, and in the transcendental heights of the Pamirs (with the height of the passes up to 4600 m), the car turned out to be at home.
The compact off-road vehicle VAZ-2121 "Niva" with a monocoque body is rightfully considered the most original and successful development of the domestic automotive industry. In April 1977, "Niva" made a real sensation on the world market with a combination of passenger comfort and high cross-country ability, unique for its time, at a more than competitive price (albeit only outside the USSR). "Niva" practically had no analogues in the practice of the world automotive industry! In 1980, the car "VAZ-2121? awarded the gold medal of the 53rd Poznan International Fair.
No other Russian passenger car comes close to having such a success in the international arena. Autoexport received applications from all over the world. There were also two special export versions: VAZ-21211 with a 1.3-liter engine (for countries with expensive fuel and high taxes on engine volume) and VAZ-21212 with right-hand drive. The latter, by the way, was in very good demand in England. Export volumes grew rapidly. In the late 1980s - early 1990s. it sometimes exceeded 50% of the output. For all the years of production, from more than one and a half million cars produced, more than 500 thousand were sent for export to more than 100 countries.
"Niva" is a cross-country vehicle with a permanent non-disconnectable drive of all wheels (in SUVs before "Niva" only Range Rover had this) with a center differential lock and a transfer case with a lowering row. In this case, the power unit was taken from the mass model "Zhiguli" VAZ-2106, and the "razdatka" was connected to the gearbox by an intermediate cardan shaft.
Many foreign tuning firms offered for Niva successful sets of plastic bodywork and other types of fine-tuning, for example, not superfluous, additional sound insulation. Some even made pickups based on it. By the way, since the 90s "Niva" has been one of the favorite objects for Russian tuning workshops. By design, the VAZ-2121 was unified as much as possible with the Zhiguli (in terms of the power unit and many interior elements - with the VAZ-2106 model), but this turned out to be not entirely justified, especially with regard to a separate transfer case connected to a standard Zhiguli gearbox with a short cardan shaft. In the absence of mutual balance of these units, the transmission makes a terrible noise. This knot has become the "Achilles' heel" of the model.
In the 90s, with the end of the shortage of a number of spare parts, "Niva" became the most affordable domestic SUV. The plant has the opportunity to create on the basis of "Niva" various modifications demanded by the market, as well as to upgrade the base model.
So, in 1993, a transitional version of the VAZ-21219 appeared with an old body and a more powerful and high-torque 1.7-liter carburetor engine "21213" equipped with a contactless ignition system. The gearbox was equipped with an overdrive 5th gear (although it was not installed on all cars), the gear ratios of the main pairs were changed from 4.3 to 4.1 and 3.9, which reduced fuel consumption. In addition, between the “razdatka” and the main gearbox, they began to install a shaft with a constant velocity joint from the “Oka”, which somewhat reduced the noise and vibration.
As a result of the modernization of 1993, a new model "Taiga" was born, which was assigned the index "VAZ-21213". This is a four-seater off-road passenger car with permanent non-disconnectable all-wheel drive. With its predecessor "Niva", these models are similar as twin sisters. VAZ-21213 received a modernized body with a third door reaching the bumper (it became much easier to load anything into the luggage compartment) and square lamps instead of rectangular ones from the "six". The updated cabin has a modern dashboard of the "2108" type, as well as modified front seats. It's hard to believe that there are 16 years between these modifications. During these years, the plant made almost no changes to the design of the 2121.
Another intermediate version with an old 1.6-liter engine was designated as VAZ-21217, and the export version with a 1.9-liter Peugeot diesel engine - 21215. Even such a half-way modernization allowed Niva to successfully survive until the 21st century. But time is taking its toll and the modern requirements for passive safety "Niva" already meets with difficulty, however, the export version was still able to bring the EURO III standards on safety and emissions of harmful substances. By the way, boarding and disembarking on the rear seat that folds entirely is very difficult, and the trunk is frankly too small for a multipurpose car.
In the 90s, a version 21214-36 was produced for export with an engine equipped with central injection and a catalytic converter. Then the engine was modernized for distributed injection and began to be supplied to the domestic market (without a converter).
Since 1995, the Togliatti company PSA Bronto has been making small series based on the Niva a VAZ-212182 "Force" cash-in-transit armored car and its "civilian" version VAZ-212180 "Fora" lengthened by 300 mm. These models are distinguished by comfort and smoothness of the course with practically the same flotation and maneuverability. Even longer (by 500 mm) five-door station wagons and pickups based on Niva are made by VAZ OPP and several small Togliatti firms (see VAZ-2131).
"Niva" is not designed for constant off-road driving, and at the same time it is not very convenient for urban use due to increased fuel consumption, "heavy" steering wheel (without power steering) and noisy transmission. However, its competitive price, relative cheapness of spare parts and ease of repair draw attention even to used copies of Niva.
At one time the fate of "Niva" was in question in connection with the organization of the JV "GM-AVTOVAZ" for the production of Chevrolet Niva. According to an agreement with the Americans, the production of the old model was supposed to stop by 2006, but due to the revision of the agreement, AVTOVAZ now has the opportunity to produce Lada Niva (this is how it has been officially called Niva since 2005). In addition, its CKD kits have been supplied since 2003 to the new assembly plant "AZIA AVTO" in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan), to the Ukrainian "LuAZ" and several assembly plants in South America.
VAZ-2121-21214 (Lada Niva) is one of the most popular SUVs on the domestic market, even new cars have practically no competitors in terms of price + quality + cross-country ability, and moderately used ones (from one to three years) are generally out of competition. All the specific problems of this model are well known to repairers (although they are far from always being successfully treated), spare parts are quite cheap and widespread no less than for Zhiguli. When buying, you need to carefully inspect the body and chassis for intensive use. If the car is often used off-road or as a tractor, it is better to refuse such a purchase. Other things being equal, it is better to choose a car with a less noisy "hand-out".

Modifications
VAZ-21211 - A unique modification of the Niva VAZ 2121 with an engine from the VAZ 21011. It began to be produced in 1978.
VAZ-2120 is the basic model of the family of all-wheel drive minivans developed by AvtoVAZ using commercially available components and assemblies. The all-metal monocoque body, the original roomy interior provide comfortable seating for 7 people, and when the rows of seats are folded down, a spacious luggage compartment is formed. The presence of 4 doors, one of which is with a sliding mechanism, provides convenience both when boarding and disembarking passengers, and when placing sufficient oversized cargo in the cabin. Lada 2120 is convenient for active family holidays, long-distance tourist trips. Also in the family of cars it is planned to have modifications such as:
Van - a truck with a high roof for the transportation of various bulky items;
Service - organization of mobile workshops on the basis of a car;
Manager - a special car for business trips for business leaders.
VAZ-21212 - Modification of the Niva VAZ 2121 with right-hand drive. Made in very small batches for England to compete with the local Rovers.
VAZ-21213 "Taiga" - differs from the base modification by a more powerful 1.7-liter engine, which better adapts to load changes, a Solex carburetor, coupled with a contactless ignition system (both reduces fuel consumption), an aluminum radiator, and other the shape of the rear lights, a different shape of the tailgate and much more. There were transitional batches with a standard 1.6 liter VAZ-2106 engine.
VAZ-21214 - Modification of the Niva VAZ 21213 with a VAZ 21214 engine, 1.7 liters, equipped with central fuel injection.
VAZ-21215 is a VAZ 21213 with a Peugeot diesel engine. It was made for export, so the standard assembly also includes spoilers, bumpers, discs, linings, etc.

VAZ-21217 is an export version of the VAZ-21213, with an engine from the VAZ-21011 (1300 cm?).
VAZ-212180 "Fora" - The version of the conveyor "Niva" extended by 300 millimeters. The growth was due to the increased size of doors and, accordingly, doorways. In this regard, the doors are equipped with "eight" hinges. The enlarged interior allowed the installation of a three-seater rear seat, slightly pushing it forward from the tightness of the wheel arches. Thanks to this, the trunk here is noticeably larger than that of the VAZ 21213. The roof in the rear part of the body is raised thanks to the plastic "napkin", which allows the rear passengers to feel more at ease. Standard equipment includes an automatic fire extinguishing system installed in the engine compartment. The wheels on this model are initially installed light-alloy wheels from the Togliatti company "Slik" with tires "Nokia HRC". They are larger than the usual standard ones, so the spare wheel has been moved to the rear door, although it is attached to the rear bumper. This greatly reduced the visibility, especially with the rear-view mirrors from the classics. Power steering, air conditioning, a plastic bumper in front of the radiator grill are offered as an additional option. Salon is standard, from 21213, but the rear seat is from VAZ 2107. A French steering column is installed on some of the cars, on which the power steering can be installed. Such cars are produced by a subsidiary VAZ enterprise OJSC Production of Special Cars BRONTO, which uses the wine code "X7G".
VAZ-212182 "Force" - Issues of booking "Niva" were worked out on the first similar machines with the prefix "B", created from the VAZ 2121. These are no longer produced today. The armored version of the VAZ-21218 is primarily intended for servicing banks and collectors. Armor and special laminated glass are able to protect the driver and passengers of the car from bullets of the Kalashnikov assault rifle of 5.45 and 7.62 mm caliber. The thickness of the steel sheet is 4.5 mm, and the special bulletproof glass is 28 mm. The side doors have reinforced hinges, additional locks and loopholes for retaliatory fire. The mandatory delivery set includes: an automatic fire extinguishing system installed in the engine compartment; explosion-proof fuel tank; additional rechargeable battery; air conditioning; remote drive of the right door lock from the driver's seat. An armored floor, light-signaling beacons, etc. are offered as additional equipment. It is heavier than the VAZ-21218 by 430 kg, respectively, suspension springs from a bar of increased diameter and special shock absorbers.
VAZ-212183 - Beach SUV with a body like "Lando" or "Landolet" (a body with an opening roof over the rear seat) was created on the basis of the VAZ-21218. The absence of a part of the roof and doors of the car made the body reinforced with an original "strapping" of pipes, on which, if necessary, you can pull a light awning or attach brackets for transporting water skis, surfboards, boats and other beach utensils. The tailgate folds back on horizontally located hinges and opens up access to the trunk. The spare wheel is "strapped" at the rear on a folding bracket. The seats are upholstered in leatherette, and on the floor instead of carpets - soft linoleum. The original plastic "body kit" and two-tone paint give a peculiar charm to the car. BRONTO makes such beach cars only to order.
VAZ-21219 - Transitional modification of the Niva VAZ-2121 with an engine from the VAZ-21213 (1.7 liters). The interior, suspension, rear window washer reservoir remained from the VAZ-2121.
VAZ-2122 "River" - This amphibious vehicle was developed by VAZ engineers in 1989. I used an aggregate base from a VAZ 2121. Only now the engine was 1.3L from a VAZ 21011 and the car could float, although not very much. Vehicle dimensions - 3735x1690x1775, weight - 1.2t. The body was sealed, and pumps were installed to pump out the water. Instead of a hard top, there was an awning, as they say, more practical. But after the tests, the military did not like something, and it was for them that the car was made, and production did not start. Nowadays, there are only 2 cars left, which are in the museums of Togliatti and Ryazan.
VAZ-2129 is a model manufactured at the VAZ OPP from the standard 213 model by lengthening the car body by means of an insert. Another version of the "long wheelbase" passenger car Niva. The main difference from the VAZ-2131 model is the presence of only 3 doors, instead of five. Everything else is almost the same.

VAZ-2130 - sort of like a model, almost a complete copy of the VAZ 2129, but with a different interior. According to rumors, she subsequently changed the index to VAZ-2129-01.
VAZ-2131 - Five-door "Niva", the production of which was established in the Experimental Industrial Production of STC VAZ in 1995 by lengthening the car body by means of an insert. It differs from the conveyor 21213 with a wheelbase increased by 500 millimeters and the same length. These changes made it possible to comfortably accommodate 5 people in the car and a spacious trunk, close in volume to the "tenth". The seat spacing has been increased by a whopping 125 mm. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the car turned out to be heavy, the trailer is contraindicated for it. A new gas tank with a capacity of 70 liters has been installed. It is completed with a French steering gear of the "screw-ball nut" design with an increased gear ratio, as a result of which the steering wheel of this model is even lighter than that of the VAZ-21213. Due to the lengthening of the body, the minimum turning radius has increased. Later, with the development of the production of 1.8-liter engines in the OPP, a modification of the "five-door" with such a motor appeared. It can be distinguished by the index 21312. Due to the characteristic appearance and love of manufacturers for green, the people received the nickname - crocodile.
VAZ-2131 SP - The car was created on the basis of a long five-door "Niva" VAZ-2131. It differs from it in the rear overhang increased by 300 millimeters and a high roof. Thanks to the increased trunk, it became possible to install two folding seats in it. As a result, the five-door became a seven-seater.
VAZ-2329 is a model manufactured at the VAZ OPP. This is the first full-fledged cargo pickup truck based on the Niva, and it can accommodate 4 people, albeit without much comfort. The history of Chevrolet Niva began in the third millennium, when representatives of the General Motors concern became interested in another development of AvtoVAZ - the Niva VAZ-2123 model. Considering its design promising for the world market, they decided to use the car as a platform for creating inexpensive SUVs. As a result, a joint venture General Motors-AVTOVAZ was created.
The new "Niva" is the first domestic car in post-Soviet history that can make you pay money for its appearance alone. It seems that there are no special design tricks and bells and whistles in it, but integrity, harmony is already attractive and beautiful. And not only beautiful - it is durable, because everything is subject to aging, except for harmony.
Chevrolet Niva has been produced since 2002, but it is already considered an epoch-making achievement of the domestic auto industry.
The "twenty-third" has its own face - the original frontal part: a purely Jeep false radiator grille between drop-shaped block lights, in which, in accordance with the tradition of the brand, the direction indicator is located on top. The rear is also far from ordinary, which is only one glass of the rear door, the lower edge of which is made with a step. To the credit of the designers of AvtoVAZ, the new Niva came out visually unlike any foreign analogue, today its appearance is distinctive and devoid of any obvious imitation, worthy of crooked smirks, poking fingers and the remarks “Tore it off!”. So the car will by no means get lost among the multitude of its counterparts of different brands, competitors, of which at least a dozen have been designed abroad over the twenty years of the previous model of the same name.
With its exterior, the VAZ-2123 is fundamentally different from its predecessor - there is nothing even to look for similarities. Externally, it is a typical urban SUV - metallic paint, painted in the color of the bumper body. It was originally designed as a five-door, in the basic version, and its three-door version exists only in sketches and models. Another thing is a two-door pickup truck or van, the samples of which have already been built in metal, but the three-door station wagon really does not exist yet and, quite possibly, will not exist at all. However, five doors are not all structural and body innovations. The rear door of the new model, in contrast to such a door of the "two hundred and thirteenth" "Niva", does not open upwards, but sideways. In addition, now a "spare wheel" is hung on its outer side, which at its predecessor rested under the hood lid.
It is quite natural that due to the slightly increased overall dimensions inside the VAZ-2123 it turned out to be more spacious than the VAZ-21213. Quite a spacious cabin can comfortably accommodate five people, has a rear seat folding in parts. There are only two seat adjustments, but there are no problems with the selection of a comfortable position. Thanks to two rows of doors, boarding and disembarking has been greatly simplified, the protruding wings of the rear wheels have moved slightly back and now they do not support the second row seat from the sides, on which three people can easily be accommodated. The luggage compartment has also increased by about 1.5 times. Of course, it is not as bulky as that of full-size SUVs, but in comparison with the trunk of the first generation Niva, progress is evident. Well, it's not worth talking about the general impression of the interior of the cabin: it is made at a modern level (there is even a place for an airbag for a passenger in the dashboard) and surpasses the interior of the VAZ-21213 in any of its versions.
The chassis and transmission of the old "Niva" have not changed structurally - they used modernized, life-tested units. Here is a list of improvements: the front axle gearbox is "untied" from the engine; the design of the gearbox drive has been changed; extended intermediate shaft; at the razdatka pinion gear of fine-modular engagement; front and rear propeller shafts are unified.
Compared to its predecessors, changes have been made to the lineup of the power unit, front and rear suspensions, and steering. The model in the basic configuration is equipped with an electric power steering and an adjustable steering column, an immobilizer and a central lock, power windows for the front doors, headlight range control and radio preparation. For an additional fee, you can get alloy wheels instead of steel, tinted glass, front fog lights, velor interior with heated front seats, two speakers and an antenna, rear seat head restraints and a spare wheel cover.
In motion, a car is not much different from a simple passenger car. But where the roads end and directions begin, Niva feels at ease. Which is not surprising: from a technical point of view, the car is much more serious than the commensurate "SUVs", which is clearly indicated by the presence of a transfer case and a center differential lock. The reverse side of the vehicle's cross-country ability is the increased noise level generated in the bowels of the transmission when driving at high speeds, as well as significant vibrations on the gearshift lever. True, accelerating the Chevrolet Niva faster than 135 km / h is not an easy task. But it allows you to keep an average of 100-110 kilometers and move comfortably from point A to point B. The view of the Chevrolet Niva through the front and side windows is quite sufficient, and the thrust of the quiet engine is quite enough to, having found a gap, join the stream.
The braking system has been seriously modernized, including the design of the master cylinder and the brake booster. The changes affected the clutch and the gearbox, in which the bearings, the gearshift mechanism, as well as all the gaskets and seals were replaced.
The engine is based on the well-known "21213", it has hydraulic valve tappets and a hydraulic tensioner for the camshaft drive chain. The camshaft itself with extended phases, which made it possible to increase the torque at low speeds.
In the basic version, the car is equipped with an injection engine of 1.7 liters with a capacity of only 80 liters. with., a system of electronic distributed fuel injection and an exhaust system with a catalytic converter that meets the requirements of the Euro-2 and Euro-3 toxicity standards. For a car with a curb weight of 1.35 tons, this power is too small. Now let's imagine a Chevrolet Niva with a full load of 1.8 tons. Here is 80 liters. with. - nothing at all.
In addition, modifications of the Chevrolet Niva with a GM gasoline engine and a FIAT diesel engine will be developed. It is quite natural, given the prospects for sales in foreign markets, that the model needs several modern engines and, first of all, a diesel one.

The history of the car, which is currently known as the VAZ-2110 (Lada 2110), began in 1983 when the first model of the sedan appeared, which strongly resembles the Opel Ascona and Ford Record cars of that time. This car had a rear-wheel drive and according to plans it was to be called VAZ-2112, but it did not receive approval for further development.

Development continued, at the beginning of 1984 another unsuccessful layout was built, which was also abandoned. The matter got off the ground only when the development of a new sedan of the Samara family with the VAZ-21099 index began. The first prototype, released at the end of 1984, already bore the factory index VAZ-2110. It was a prototype of the so-called "Series 0"; during its manufacture, almost all parts were taken from the cars of the first "Samara" family (/ /). The prototype VAZ-2110 "zero series" strongly resembled the VAZ-21099, in its design there was only one left rear-view mirror and a single wiper.

A year later, after the next improvements and changes in the design, the so-called 100th series of the VAZ-2110 car was born, which was named "Afalina. After the hundredth series, the next and next came out in increments of one hundred, the more the series was marked with, the more it looked like a production car. With each new series, the car less and less resembled the original rear-wheel drive project, for example, in the project of the 300 series, it was already possible to easily recognize the top ten that went into mass production. It is worth noting that the aerodynamic refinement of the 300 series was carried out with the participation of Porsche.

The prototype, which was almost ready for serial production, was shown in 1992 to Russian President Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin during his visit to the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. This copy was recommended for serial production, however, due to the economic crisis, serial production was postponed, and only in June 1995 was the first pilot batch of VAZ-2110 cars produced, and full-fledged serial production was launched only for the next 1996.

The serial car VAZ-2110 for its time (in the mid-90s at the time it was released) had a modern design, both exterior and interior and a spacious trunk with a volume of 480 liters. Throughout the entire production period, the appearance of the car practically did not change and in this form in Russia it was produced until 2007, after which the car was completely replaced by the new Lada Priora sedan.

The VAZ-2110 sedan was produced not only in Russia, but also in Egypt and Ukraine by the Bogdan corporation. The Ukrainian "ten" bore its own name "Bogdan" and was produced until 2014. During the production of the VAZ-2110, it had many modifications, these were models with both a carburetor and an injection engine, both 8 and 16-valve, both 4 and 2-door coupe and even sports modifications.

Design and construction

In the cars of the 10th family, new developments were laid in comparison with the previous models. So the parts that were most exposed to corrosion began to be made of galvanized metal; gas stops were used to hold the hood in the open position. An on-board control system, an immobilizer, and a system for capturing gasoline vapors appeared. The brake discs are ventilated. Some production cars were equipped with air conditioning.

The first production cars VAZ-2110 received a VAZ-21083 carburetor 8-valve engine with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 69 horsepower. At the same time, the maximum speed was 162 km / h, and the average fuel consumption was 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. Even if we take into account the fact that the engines on the VAZ-2110 and VAZ-21099 cars were the same "ten" in terms of acceleration and speed dynamics showed a 12% higher result. This was due primarily to the reduced drag coefficient.

The carburetor engine was replaced by an injection engine. The new 8-valve injection engine with a volume of 1.5 liters remained the same, but the power increased to 79 horsepower, the maximum speed also increased, now it was 170 km / h. Later, 16-valve engine models were developed.

The exterior of the car was not as angular as the cars of the "Samara" family (which were called "chisel" for a reason), the body lines were smoother and more modern. The car received completely different optics, taillights, a different grille, completely different bumpers (both front and rear). In general, it was a completely different car, and it makes no sense to compare it with the "ninety-ninth", although the cars were developed in parallel.

The interior of the VAZ-2110 car was also completely different, a new panel and instrument panel, a new steering wheel, door cards and much more. On the dashboard there was a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and engine temperature gauge. "Ten" was equipped with anatomical seats with head restraints, which can be adjusted both in tilt angle and in length.

Modifications

The base model that was produced from 1996 to 2000. An 8-valve carburetor engine VAZ-21083 with a working volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 69 horsepower was installed on the car.

This modification has been produced since 2004, equipped with an 8-valve gasoline injection engine with a working volume of 1.6 liters.

Like the previous modification with an 8-valve injection engine, but with a volume of 1.5 liters.

VAZ-21106 Coupe

In the 60s of the last century, several brands of cars were produced in the USSR. "Cossacks", "Volga" and "Muscovites" will forever remain in the memory of the citizens of our country as nostalgia for those distant times. But at that time there were not enough cars. It was almost impossible to find them on the open market. Cars were distributed according to lists at large enterprises.

To meet the growing demand for four-wheeled vehicles, the country's leadership decided to build a new car plant. According to the idea, he was supposed to take the main place in the industry of the production of passenger cars. It is from this moment that the history of AvtoVAZ begins. Its construction took place very quickly (2 times faster than planned). The equipment for technological cycles was created not only at factories in the USSR, but also in a number of other socialist states, as well as in the countries of the United States and Europe.

Establishment of the plant

It was decided to build the Volzhsky Automobile Plant in Togliatti. For this, the country's leadership entered into an agreement in August 1966 with the Italian concern Fiat, which helped in the construction of the auto giant. They not only had to build a huge full-cycle production, start up the appropriate equipment, but also train personnel.

The history of AvtoVAZ in Togliatti, even at the stage of creation, experienced a small incident. The fact is that the emblem for the new car brand was invented by Soviet artists. The idea for the sketch belonged to one of the capital's leaders A. Dekalenkov. But the Italians had to make these logos. Fiat created the first thirty emblems with a mistake. In the name of the city "Togliatti" the letter "I" ended up as the letter "R". The marriage was replaced very quickly.

The name of the plant was not chosen by analogy with other Soviet industries, which were called, for example, Ulyanovsk or Gorkovsky. This was done for reasons of political correctness. Otherwise, "inappropriate jokes could not have been avoided."

Beginning of work

Personnel training began even before the construction of the plant was completed. Thanks to the tireless work of the workers, in 1970 the first 6 kopecks were produced - the famous Zhiguli car - VAZ-2101.

The demand for machines was such that sales limited only production possibilities. In the first year, 100 thousand of them were produced.

In 1973, the VAZ-2101 began to be supplied to the world market. However, this brand had to be renamed into Lada. The name "Zhiguli" in French sounded like "Gigolo" (a man dancing for money).

Over time, the Lada brand began to be produced for the domestic consumer as well. Zhiguli ceased to be produced.

Increasing production turnover

In 1980, an Olympiad was held in the USSR and was put on the assembly line "Five" (VAZ-2105). However, although these models were in enviable demand, the "six" (VAZ-2106) became the most popular in the entire history of the plant's work. It was released into mass production in 1976.

The production capacity of AvtoVAZ was provided by five factories. From 1966 to 1991, it included the Avtonormal Belebeevsky plant, the Skopinsky and Dmitrovgrad auto-aggregate plants, the VAZ CHP and AvtoVAZagregat.

"Kopeyka" and "Troika"

Remembering everything (in the entire history of the auto giant's existence), one cannot but pay tribute to its first offspring. These were VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103. The first in the last two digits of the model number is popularly nicknamed "Kopeyka". The second car began to be called "three".

"Kopeyka" was a sedan model adapted to the conditions of Soviet roads. The ground clearance of the domestic car was increased from 110 to 175 mm. Also, the developers have strengthened the brakes and suspension. This car was a symbol of the Soviet era of 70s automobiles. "Kopeyka" became the ancestor of rear-wheel drive sedans and universal "classic" models.

A short time after the first Kopeyka rolled off the assembly line, the Troika was put into serial production. At that time it was called a "luxury" model. It was a thoroughly revised “kopeck”. Particular attention was paid to had four headlights, chrome elements and an improved instrument panel.

Further improvements to the models

After the first two were released, the history of AvtoVAZ includes several more popular versions of the "Kopeyka". After its serious restyling, the VAZ-2104, 2105, 2106 and 2107 were put on the conveyor. The most popular among them was the "Six". It was the prototype for the Fiat 124 Speciale. For more than 30 years of production of this model, 4.3 million VAZ-2106 were sold.

The other three car brands also sold well. The designers developed rectangular headlights that were fashionable at that time. The salon has also been seriously redesigned. The engine of the cars was also modernized. "Six" and today is considered a fairly popular car.

80s models

The history of AvtoVAZ in the 80s of the last century tells about a new stage of production. At this time, a completely new generation of Sputnik vehicles was developed. For the corresponding index in the number, like in previous models, people christened the car "eight". It was characterized by a wedge-shaped front end. For this, the VAZ-2108 was also called a "chisel".

The model had a new engine and gearbox. She had front-wheel drive. The shape of the car was more aerodynamic than previous cars. The body had a power structure. This model was developed by the auto giant in cooperation with Porsche. The Germans helped the domestic manufacturer to create everything except the design.

After some time, the VAZ-2108 with a five-door hatchback and sedan body went on sale.

In the late 1980s, the small-displacement "Oka" was developed. Its prototype was the 1980 Daihatsu Cuore. Subsequently, apart from AvtoVAZ, Oka was also produced by SeAZ and KAMAZ.

Plant after the collapse of the USSR

Many large and small industries, including AvtoVAZ, experienced the collapse. The history of the plant shows that the giant of automotive technology experienced a deep and protracted crisis at this time.

The fact is that in the sad days for AvtoVAZ, the plant was faced with such a concept as "competition". Up to this point, the Soviet consumer purchased cars that came off the assembly line very quickly. But now a stream of fashionable, albeit used, foreign-made cars has poured into the country.

In Soviet times, domestically produced passenger cars were little improved. Therefore, in comparison with imported cars, they did not stand up to criticism. The plant faced the need to cut production volumes. More than 25% of jobs were cut. Even state support did not help. To equalize the demand for foreign and domestic cars, high customs duties were introduced. But it didn't help much.

Working in a crisis

The history of AvtoVAZ tells of really hard days for the company. Insufficient demand for obsolete car models, the struggle for ownership of the enterprise did not help to overcome the crisis.

Moreover, the crisis in the financial system further contributed to the deterioration of affairs. The state strongly supported the dying production. But the accumulated internal and external problems could not be solved only by these measures.

Cases of mass theft of products and components were recorded. These were huge sums even for such a large enterprise. In 2009, the decline in sales was a record 39% compared to 2008.

It took a huge investment to save the country's largest car factory. Anti-crisis measures were developed. Having solved its internal and external problems, the company could get back on its feet.

Way out of the crisis

AvtoVAZ experienced a long and deep crisis. The history of the plant has more than 15 years of decaying, unpromising production in conditions of insufficient demand. However, a way out was found. In July 2009, an agreement was reached between Russian Technologies and Renault-Nissan. It was decided to increase the authorized capital of AvtoVAZ. It was invested 240 million euros by Renault-Nissan (this amounted to 25% of all shares) and three times the amount of Russian Technologies (while increasing its share in the authorized capital by 44%). Troika Dialog lost 17.5% of its share.

In addition, it was decided to give the post of chief designer to Steve Mattin, who previously held a similar position in such world companies as Mercedes and Volvo. A period of gradual revival began.

AvtoVAZ, whose history of creation and work has known many ups and downs, during the crisis is characterized by a small update of models. So, in the early 90s of the last century, the VAZ-2110 became one of the few new models. It was a sedan based on the G8. This car had a rather original body and interior design.

After him, for about 10 years, the production did not know significant updates. The crisis that befell the formerly flourishing plant affected all spheres of its activity. Only in 2003, on the basis of the GM-AvtoVAZ joint venture, the Chevrolet Niva was put into serial production. A year later, the production of sedans, hatchbacks and station wagons of the Kalina type was launched in Togliatti.

2007 is marked by the release of a new model of the auto giant Lada Priora. To stimulate consumer demand in 2011, Kalina was replaced by its cheaper version of Grant. In 2012, a modified version of the Renault Logan of the universal type Lada Largus was launched into production.

AvtoVAZ Museum

Concern "AvtoVAZ" has a rich history. Therefore, it is not surprising that it has its own museum. It is one of the largest such institutions in our country. The AvtoVAZ History Museum is located in Togliatti. It is dedicated to the well-known not only domestic, but also foreign brand "Lada".

This museum contains only exhibits that are especially significant for the history of the plant. There are the first models "Grant", "Largus", "Kalina" produced after the collapse of the USSR. Also in the museum you can find cars that are no longer in production, but you can hardly see them on the streets of cities in our country.

The entire history from the first day of the plant's operation to the present time is kept within the walls of the famous museum. The first "cherry" kopeck, sold through the corporate network of the enterprise, is now exhibited here. It was operated by its owner for about 19 years. He donated it to the museum in 2000, for which he received a new car as a gift, which had just started going on sale.

Some interesting facts

A brief history of AvtoVAZ would be incomplete without some interesting facts. For example, the Niva (or VAZ-2121) was the only domestic car ever sold in Japan.

The city in which the car plant was built was previously called Stavropol. But in 1964 it was renamed in honor of the General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party P. Togliatti. He died while visiting the Artek children's camp during negotiations for a future joint venture.

The chief designer of Niva PM Prusov says that this name was given to the car after the first letters of the name of his daughters (Nina and Irina), as well as the sons of the first chief designer of production (Vadim and Andrey).

Concern today

Having gone through a deep crisis, the concern is gradually getting back on its feet. The history of AvtoVAZ deserves respect. After all, in spite of everything, the cars coming off its conveyors were a symbol of that era. Perhaps now they are somewhat behind their foreign counterparts. But with the right approach, it will be possible to improve the automotive industry.

The largest passenger car manufacturer in our country has a future. With the right approach, it can bring big profits to the country. After all, even such old models as the "six" and "seven" are still in demand both among the citizens of our country and on the territory of all post-socialist countries. Therefore, applying new technologies, developing new models with improved qualities of both mechanisms and design, the auto giant can be brought to a new level.
