There is nothing particularly outstanding about the Rapid. This spartan minimalism, but speaks of European style. It just so happened that chiseled, rounded, smooth shapes are more inherent in Asian cars. Europe has slightly different requirements: nothing superfluous and everything you need. Gasoline engines Skoda Rapid 1.6 problematic, knocking "cold", in need of repair

At the start of production, the Skoda Rapid was equipped with MPI EA111 engines, type CFNA, with a displacement of 1.6 liters. The first episodes really distinguished themselves with sound effects in the form of a knock when starting from a cold state. This knock lasted from several seconds in warm weather to several minutes in frost and disappeared as the engine warmed up. The reason is a constructive flaw, an insufficient diameter of the piston crown for such a shape of its skirt.

As a result, during the reciprocating movement of the piston in the cylinder, there was a so-called off-design shift of the piston swinging on the piston pin, accompanied by a knock. Most motors could travel tens and hundreds of thousands of kilometers with this knock, but in some cases the symptom progressed, the motors began to “gurgle” in the entire temperature range, from starting to working. Autopsy and flaw detection of such engines showed that the effect was accompanied by scratches and scuffs on the piston skirts, just like in this photo.

The manufacturer's engineers quickly figured out the problem, in 2013 the pistons were modified, the diameter was increased and the skirt configuration changed, and they went both on the conveyor and in spare parts to dealers who accepted the claims of the owners and solved them by replacing the pistons.

Since the second half of last year, 2015, the issue of 1.6 engines has been fundamentally resolved, EA111 CFNA engines have gone down in history, replaced by EA211 CWVA engines of the same displacement.

These are completely different power units, 5 hp more powerful. predecessor, with a timing belt drive. There are no such problems for them.

Skoda Rapid interior is boring

The rear suspension of the Skoda Rapid has features that limit its cross-country ability.

We hung out the first Skoda Rapid that we found in the workshop on a lift in order to deal with this story, and in general, to find out how the car is adapted for operation in difficult road conditions, taking the opportunity.

Almost the entire underbody of the Rapid, from the front bumper to the fuel tank, is "sewn up" with sheets of protective plastic. Dirt and sandblasting - no chance.

Only in the tunnel, where the exhaust system is laid, there is no plastic. It's clear: the temperatures are high, so a special heat shield is laid there. What else is a plus - a powerful suspension of parts of the exhaust system, pipes, resonators, mufflers. Even if the bottom is tightly packed in snow or mud, it is unlikely that it will be possible to rip them off the mounts when leaving.

The Czechs also did not skimp on anti-corrosion and anti-gravel protection.

Such a picture is everywhere, from the rapids and all over the bottom. Everything is filled with "anti-gravel" under the paintwork, and spilled with anti-corrosion compounds.

The first surprise on the rear axle is the brakes. They are disk-based. A complete "template break" in the class of available equipment, where drum brakes are almost everywhere at the back. It turns out that Rapid disc brakes are installed on the rear axle in the case of configurations with powerful TSI turbo engines and diesel engines. If the car is equipped with MPI "aspirated" drums, the drums will be installed. An absolutely clear solution: a faster or heavier car - more powerful brakes. As for the second surprise, we recognize the low position of the support cups of the rear suspension springs.
