Yes, it’s already difficult to claim speed records with an atmospheric engine, but in terms of balance, this Corolla has no equal. In a small advertising brochure, Toyota repeats the word “premium” in relation to the sedan several times, but I did not see any major changes in the interior. A large and very glossy multimedia screen with touch buttons has appeared here, the climate control unit has changed, and dashboard a color monitor appeared on-board computer. The rest is still dominated by hard plastic and archaic rectangular buttons. The Corolla is the perfect example of a car you'll be happy with. Yes, it does not impress with its dynamics, does not offer original options and cannot even boast of large capacity. In the end, the Corolla doesn't make you fall in love. She is callous and too correct. But in a few years, the liquidity of the sedan will make fans of everything German think twice. This is the recipe for Japanese happiness. Although Toyota Corolla experienced only a restyling, and not a generation change, Japanese engineers thoroughly improved the technical part of the sedan. The Corolla is based on the same platform as its predecessor: with typical C-class McPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent beam at the rear. The main difference compared to the pre-restyling version is the shock absorber settings, which have become even stiffer. For the sake of controllability, the silent blocks of the suspension arms, as well as the stabilizer struts, were changed.

The structure of the body has not changed: high-strength steels with a large number of welding points are still widely used. Thanks to this, the Corolla boasts some of the best torsional rigidity in the segment. Things are also not bad with the curb weight: even without practically using aluminum and light alloys in the design, the sedan in the basic version weighs about 1.2 tons. After restyling, a new 1.8 liter engine (140 horsepower) appeared in the Corolla line for Russia. The naturally aspirated engine is paired only with a continuously variable transmission. You can order the Corolla with two engines, which were equipped with the pre-restyling versions of the sedan. By the way, as Toyota representatives found out by interviewing focus groups, many potential buyers run away from this box like fire. Why? They confuse it with the previous MultiMode robot, which was installed at the dawn of production previous generation.

Once again, we are pleased to note that Toyota CVT is very good! Moreover, both in traffic jams, which abound in the resort of Anapa (Moscow has never dreamed of such traffic jams!), and on the highway - no jerks or delays. In addition, Toyota claims that these CVTs have virtually no failures, although the pre-reform sedan presented for comparison with a mileage of about 30 thousand kilometers was already quietly “howling” with the transmission.

With a CVT, two naturally aspirated petrol engines are available - 1.6 (122 hp) and 1.8 (140 hp) liters. And we definitely vote for the more powerful option! Formally, the difference between them is small - some 18 “horses”, 19 N∙m of torque and 0.9 seconds of acceleration to hundreds. But in fact, driving a Corolla 1.8 is much more pleasant - overtaking on country roads is easier on it, and putting the pedal to the floor and listening to the desperate roar of the engine high speed needed less often. Therefore, 1.8 “eats” no more than 1.6 - average consumption taking into account traffic jams it was 8.2 l/100 km. Moreover, 1.8, according to Toyota representatives, can be “fed” with AI-92 gasoline. Nice bonus!

The springs and dampers have been tweaked to reduce buffeting when fully loaded, but the Corolla now responds more harshly to sharp-edged bumps (read: joints of overpasses and cut asphalt, rails and hatches). The final touch is reconfigured steering with a slightly more “clamped” zero position. It has become better - the driver has more feedback.

What will happen to demand?

Most likely, there will not be a radical jump in Corolla sales. Judge for yourself - only the initial version with manual transmission and 1.3 engine costs less than a million rubles (949 thousand). The most affordable Corolla 1.6 with a CVT is already 1,059,000 rubles.

Want climate control? If you please, fork out for the “Style Plus” package - it’s 1,208,000 rubles for a sedan with 1.6 and manual transmission, 1,245,000 rubles for 1.6 with a CVT, and for the 1.8 engine you will have to pay another 32 thousand rubles. Finally, the top version “Prestige” costs 1,295,000 rubles for the “Corolla” 1.6 and 1,327,000 for the 1.8. And this is more expensive than the ones we recently tested. And very close to Camry! But, if you still decide to throw in your lot with the Corolla, know - She's in better shape now than ever.. Typical breakdowns and operational problems
