LADA Kalina is a line of domestic front-wheel drive small class cars, which are based on the reliable Gamma platform. The interest, caused in 2004 by the appearance on the market of a car with the original name "Kalina", is not accidental, because it was one of the first domestic models, in the exterior and interior of which the so-called "European notes" appeared.

First generation Kalina has been assembled since November 2004, although the model has been developed since 1993 and the first prototypes of the car in different body versions were first presented in Moscow long before the start of mass production:

  • the hatchback was shown in 1999;
  • sedan - in 2000;
  • station wagon - in 2001.

Lada in a radically new design sold very well, which prompted the company to modernize the model. In 2007, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder power unit was replaced by a more powerful 1.4-liter 16-valve, and the car's braking system received an ABS module.

But, not everything went so smoothly. The owners' opinion about the quality and functionality of the car was mixed. The precedents with the recall of a series of cars, in which serious defects in the steering and engine mounts were revealed, also played not in Kalina's favor.

But, in spite of everything, the car was very popular, and in 2009 it even took the honorable 4th place in the number of sold models among all domestic cars.

Second generation Wedges were introduced in 2012. The updated car retained its recognizable design, but received a number of significant technical improvements, some of which were borrowed from Grants.

The owners of the new model noted the following advantages of Lada Kalina 2:

  • improved acceleration dynamics;
  • Jatco automatic transmission (optional);
  • ABS + BAS systems, as well as ESP and TCS;

The interior did not receive significant improvements, except that the bright inserts and two-tone upholstery of the seats in the body color became the stylish highlight of the car.

Of the main improvements, it is worth noting:

  • improved sound insulation;
  • extended list of options;
  • front suspension from MacPherson;
  • transmission protection (another hint of the off-road model);
  • availability of a version with an automatic transmission.

  • lack of space for second-row passengers;
  • modest for a station wagon (and even more so a crossover) trunk of 355 liters;
  • deplorable safety indicators (1 star versus 2 for the Granta model).

Lada Kalina NFR

Another attempt to create another reincarnation of the model with the assignment of a cardinal new image to the city car. Equipped with an uprated 1.6 liter 140 horsepower 16-valve, the model was supposed to become the base for the production of racing cars.

Even if you try to find Kalina NFR in 2019, you will find out that the model was produced only in a luxury configuration, for which the manufacturer did not skimp on artificial leather upholstery, as many as 2 airbags, heated front seats and a package of standard electronic options to assist the driver.

The price of the sports (and according to the manufacturer's promise, even of the racing) Kalina, which received enviable technical characteristics in the cabin, both for the brethren, started at 850,000 rubles.

LADA Kalina in 2019

Since 2004, AvtoVAZ has been producing compact five-seater cars of the Kalina family. Currently, since 2013, the second generation of small cars has been produced in the following modifications:

The photos and videos about the restyled version of Kalina Cross presented by a number of publications clearly show that the changes made in appearance are not significant, but they made it possible to form the design of the classic crossover.   • massive bumpers;

The improved cross-country ability of a compact runabout is indicated by:

The updated design, together with the modified suspension and steering settings, as well as the body geometry, make it possible to confidently attribute the 2019 Lada Kalina Cross to the compact (SUV) crossover segment.

Externally, it differs from the base hatchback by a more aggressive design of the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic spoiler, a sports steering wheel and interior trim, the seats have the Kalina Sport inscription, in addition, the sport inscription is present on the radiator grille and in the lower right corner of the fifth door. The technical differences include the sports suspension and gearbox.

The off-road wagon, which began to be produced in September 2014, received an increased ground clearance, a protective body kit with an original interior trim and oversized tires. Due to the modernized suspension, the ground clearance has increased by 16 millimeters, in addition, the stability and controllability of the car has increased. The car is available in two trim levels and both of them are "normal", they differ only in engines.

Kalina Cross received a plastic protective body kit, other (unlike the base station wagon) bumpers, a trimmed radiator grille, enlarged moldings and factory underbody protection. Changes in the interior are also striking, the seats, doors, steering wheel and part of the interior upholstery received bright orange or yellow inserts. Also, better sound insulation is installed on the "Cross".
