Gangsta: the experience of owning a BMW X5 E53. What car owners say BMW X5 E53 Suspension BMW X5 E53

The BMW E53 became the basis for the BMW X5 SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class vehicles. E53 was produced from 1999 to 2006. This model was originally developed for the American markets, and since at that time, owned the Range and Land Rover brands, many of the components were borrowed from them. For example, the developers have adopted two systems - the Hill Descent system, and the Off-road engine management system. Other electronic components and engine were taken from the 5-series BMW E39. Car sales in the US started in 1999 and in 2000 in Europe. The letter "X" in the model name means four-wheel drive, and the number 5 means that the model is based on the 5th series.

In detail

The first sketches of the BMW X5 E53 were presented in the late 90s by designer Chris Bangle. Some design elements were also partly borrowed from Range Rover, such as the sketch for the rear doors. But unlike the British Range Rover, the German BMW was conceived as a sportier car, and in the end this led to a decrease in its off-road performance. In addition, 62% of the torque comes from the rear-wheel drive of the car, which also makes it sportier.

The interior equipment of the car was made according to the most advanced technologies. It was equipped with multimedia capabilities such as Bluetooth, MP3 and DVD navigation. In 2002, the sports model X5 4.6is appeared. In it, both the interior and exterior trim were changed, and the model was also equipped with 20-inch rims. In addition, the car has a new engine with a capacity of 342 hp and a volume of 4.6 liters. A few years after that, another model, the X5 4.8is, will appear, which will be equipped with a 360 hp engine. and a volume of 4.8 liters. It is this model that will later be called the fastest SUV in the world.

Restyling

In 2003, an updated model BMW X5 E53 was presented to the public. The main differences are a new drive, new headlights (taken from the E39), an upgraded engine and several interior trim options. The new drive had more possibilities, so if the old one used a fixed torque value - 38% front and 62% rear drive, then the new one had a built-in system that dynamically distributes engine power towards one or the other drive. Everything depended on a certain road situation, and if it was necessary, then the torque could reach 100% on one of the drives.

The X5 4.4i model was equipped with a new engine, which was developed in 2002, for the 7-series cars. Its power has been increased by 25 hp. In April 2004, the 4.6is, as mentioned above, was replaced by the 4.8is. Its 4.8 liter engine was later used in the 2005 750i. The exterior of the 4.8is has been slightly changed from the 4.6is. For example, the lower bumper began to be painted in the same color as the body. Also, chrome tailpipes were installed and the rims were increased to 20 inches. From 2004 to 2006, the company did not make any changes either in the internal or external equipment of the E53. BMW developers focused all their efforts on creating a new model, which appeared in 2006. Since 2006, she began to produce a new model BMW X5 E70.

The BMW X5 has recently been the dream of many young (and not only) drivers. At the moment, the secondary market is overflowing with offers of the X5 in the back of the E53. Since the car has been produced for more than 15 years, then the prices for its first models are quite affordable, but it is very, very problematic to find a not "killed" device. There is also a popular belief that this car requires significant financial costs from its owner. Let's try to answer the question: "Is this really so?"

For the first time, the BMW X5 was shown to the general public in 1999, and immediately began selling it in North America. A year later, its sales started in European countries. In 2003, there was a slight facelift of the model, and the line of its power units changed slightly. In 2006, the next generation BMW X5 came out, and the body was already indexed E70. It is interesting that initially the X-fifth was assembled in the American city of Spartanberg for the whole world, but now it is being assembled in Russia as well.

    2000 BMW X5

The first E53 models were equipped with two gasoline units: an inline six-cylinder 3-liter (M54 index - 231 forces) and a 4.4-liter V8 (M62 index - 286 forces). In 2001, the line of motors was added diesel six-cylinder 184-horsepower 3.0 with the M57 index and a petrol V8 with a volume of 4.6 (346 forces). In 2003, the model was restyled, and the diesel was replaced with the same three-liter, but more powerful - 218 horsepower. The petrol 4.4 was changed to N62, with a capacity of 320 hp. And instead of 4.6, they began to install 4.8 (360 hp) motors.

    BMW X5 E53 engine modifications

The most common engine in the X5 is a naturally aspirated 3-liter gasoline engine - M54B30. This engine is reliable and unpretentious, it can easily move off almost 300 thousand km without requiring repair. But in 4.4-liter engines, cranking of the liners and the occurrence of scoring on the cylinder walls closer to 250 thousand km was noted. Engine overhaul often exceeds the cost of a "used" engine in good condition (but some specialists can clog the damaged cylinder, which will significantly reduce the cost of repairs). This must be taken into account if you are going to "capital" the motor of the X-fifth.

    2000 BMW X5

All X-5 gasoline engines have inherent problems. The first of them is the failure of the crankcase ventilation valve. The valve channels are gradually clogged, in winter they also accumulate condensate, which freezes in cold weather and the oil begins to squeeze out through the dipstick hole. And if you do not detect this problem in time, then the motor will experience oil starvation. Later, the manufacturer modified this valve, but it was not possible to completely solve the problem. The only way out is to periodically replace the valve and tubes.

The coolant reservoir cap of the X5 is a consumable item. The cover has a built-in valve that monitors the working pressure in the cooling system. But the valve has a certain resource and becomes jammed over time, which can even rupture the expansion tank. It is also worthwhile to periodically monitor and timely change the automatic transmission thermostat, which is in a plastic case, which collapses over time.

Closer to the 250 thousandth run, you can hear a significant noise emitted by the Vanos timing system. On a cold engine, it makes a roar, and after starting the sound of a working gasoline engine is similar to a diesel one, a certain vibration appears.

    BMW X5 4.6is 2001

Hydraulic compensators and crankshaft position sensors, camshaft, mass air flow sensor, thermostat and water pump will last more than 250,000 km.

After about 150 thousand km of run, the engine starts to increase oil consumption. One of the reasons for this is the worn valve stem seals that need to be replaced for this run.

The catalyst dies off after 150 thousand kilometers. The three-liter American X5 contains a catalytic converter purge system. So, her motor fails after 100 thousand kilometers. In this case, it is cheaper to dismantle the system and reflash the engine ECU.

After 250-300 thousand kilometers, the fuel pump usually needs to be replaced, and the diesel pump may need to be replaced with the main one.

The three-liter turbocharged diesel is inferior in reliability to the gasoline 3.0, but surpasses the 4.4 and 4.6 engines. The turbine will easily survive 150 thousand km before being repaired. The pressure converter of a turbocharger lives about the same as a turbine. If the engine of your diesel X5 starts to work intermittently, then the boost pressure sensor may be out of order or the tightness of the pipes leading to the intercooler has disappeared.

On the three-liter X5, both diesel and gasoline, a manual transmission could be installed. Such a complete set is very rare, but the "mechanics" on them are quite reliable.

The first generation of the X5 was equipped with a GM gearbox for 3-liter engines and a ZF gearbox for 4.4-liter engines and large volumes. Automatic machines handle up to 300 thousand km of run, but on powerful 4.8 the box is rented out much earlier. The first symptoms of a dying gearbox are jolts during gear changes. Box repair consists of replacing solenoids and oil. Approximately 90% of such automatic transmission repairs give a positive result. If replacing the solenoids did not help, and the tremors still remained, then the automatic transmission clutches must be replaced.

    BMW X5 4.8is 2004

The torque converter can fail closer to 300,000 km. It can be either replaced or repaired. Repair will cost 4-5 times cheaper than replacement. GM gearboxes may require replacement of the oil pump. But new ones are no longer produced - you will have to look for used ones. Also, these gearboxes may leak hoses between the box and the radiator.

The first problems with the transfer case can arise at a mileage close to 250 thousand km. Usually they are caused by an extended chain, and this is manifested by a bang. It is not worth tightening with the replacement of the chain, otherwise the cardan will also have to be changed (its splines will quickly wear out).

On diesel X5, the problem of failure of the front gearbox is often noted. It cannot be repaired. Usually car owners are looking for used ones.

With the passage of time, the cardan begins to play, and this manifests itself in the form of jerks when the automatic transmission selector is moved from the “drive” position to the “parking” position. It is treated by replacing the crosses.

Failure of the front drive shafts is a frequent problem. The front hub bearings run almost 200 thousand.

On the X5, in addition to the usual, air suspension was installed. The air suspension could be on both axles or only on the rear. Air bags serve almost 200 thousand km, and fail mainly due to the constantly falling dirt on them. If you thoroughly periodically wash the pneumatic elements, then their resource will be significantly increased. The front pneumatic struts are non-collapsible, the pillow has to be changed together with the rack. But the cushions on the back can be changed separately. The weak points of such a suspension are considered to be the receiver valve block, the suspension control unit and the body position sensors.

The resource of the levers is about 150 thousand km. The wear of the upper wishbones will expose the wheels of your X5 to a "house"; the wheels will become the same "house" due to the wear of the floating silent blocks and the silent blocks of the lower arms.

The steering rack is generally reliable, play is rare. The rubber squeak that appears when you turn the steering wheel is caused by wear on the steering gimbals. It is treated with abundant lubrication.

Closer to 300 thousand km, ABS sensors may fail, much less often the ABS unit itself fails. Front brake hoses serve approximately 250 thousand km.

The body of the BMW X5 is quite strong and resists corrosion well. The paintwork of the car is quite thick, and is not afraid of the effects of an aggressive environment. On cars with decent mileage, you can find chips on the hood, on the front bumper and on the grille. The first corrosion can be found on vehicles over 10 years old under the seal at the bottom of the doors.

Closer to 10 years of operation, there are cases of failure of the drive of external mirrors. Specialized services provide services for their restoration, which is much cheaper than buying a new drive. There are frequent cases of tearing off the outer handles in frosts after a car wash. The reason is the frozen door lock and the weak plastic frame of the handle. As a preventive measure, it is possible to recommend the treatment of locks and handle mechanisms with silicone grease.

    BMW X5 4.8is 2004

The panoramic sunroof may stop working after 5-7 years of operation. This is due to the skew and breakage of the rear sash. The wear of the sunroof guide can also cause knocking in the passenger compartment. The drainage of the hatch must be periodically cleaned, otherwise water will begin to penetrate into the interior over time. The mechanisms for lifting window panes in such years also begin to suffer due to wear on the cables, guides and failure of the drive motor.

The license plate light stops working over time due to rotten contacts closer to seven years of operation. Because of this, the trunk opening button stops working. Oxidized contacts can also cause problems in the operation of the rear lights. It is treated in all cases by soldering or replacing.

The interior of the car is very solid, there are no squeaks in it. But not everything is so smooth. On cars over 6 years old, the fabric upholstery on the A-pillars begins to exfoliate. It is solved either by replacing or gluing the upholstery on the racks.

If pixels on the dashboard display begin to be lost, then it is necessary to re-solder the corresponding cable. An audio failure can be caused by a burned-out radio module or amplifier (both located in the trunk).

Sometimes the air conditioner fan can run out of trouble, which needs to be replaced (a relatively expensive thing - a control board is built into the case). Sometimes the processor cooler on the climate control board can crack. In this case, you just need to lubricate it. If the fan speed of the stove starts to float, then the corresponding resistor needs to be replaced - popularly known as a "hedgehog". It should be borne in mind that a quick discharge of the battery can also occur due to a faulty "hedgehog".

When using the X5, it is important to monitor the battery charge level. Its low level at the moment the engine is started can display various errors. If the battery has stopped charging, then most likely the generator brushes have worn out. When replacing the brushes, it will be useful to replace the two bearings of the generator.

In general, the X5 in the 53rd body is not as terrible as it is painted. If you have straight enough hands, if you know where and how to look for relevant information on the Internet, then you can fully service this car yourself, which will avoid many unnecessary costs. To repair this car, it is not at all necessary to purchase only original expensive spare parts and consumables. Car dealerships are now full of decent quality analogs. The car has been studied up and down by motorists, so there is more than enough information on its maintenance and repair on specialized forums and sites.

It is clear that the repair at the "officials" requires significant financial costs, which gives rise to rumors about the extreme high cost of maintenance and repair of the X5. Do not buy a car with your last money and do not buy a car from someone who bought it with your last money. Such comrades usually mercilessly exploited the X5, not caring at all and not spending (after all, there was nothing to spend) on its maintenance and timely repairs, which led to the "stupidity" of the instance. Before buying such a car, always carry out its comprehensive diagnostics. The identified shortcomings are a reason to significantly reduce the price, and the performance of this machine is usually restored after additional investments.

As a conclusion, it should be said that this car is very reliable, with appropriate high-quality service, it can please its owner for a long time. If you do not use the services of official services, and be smart about the choice of spare parts and consumables for it, then it will not empty your pocket as much as everyone is talking about.

    Crash test BMW X5 E53:

BMW X5, which received the E53 index. According to the old tradition, the model was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show. It marked the beginning of a completely new approach to the creation of cars of this class. Many motorists positioned the X5 "BMW E53" as an off-road vehicle, but the creators insisted that the car belongs to the class of crossovers with an increased degree of cross-country ability and sports functionality.

A bit of history

Creating the first X5, the Germans did not hide that their main task was to surpass the Range Rover, producing the same respectable and powerful car, but with more modern equipment. Initially, the X5 "BMW E53" was produced at home - in Bavaria. After BMW took over Rover, the car began to be produced also in the American open spaces. Thus, the car mastered both Europe and the United States.

Of course, an auto giant like BMW couldn't make a bad car. The X5 E53 model has everything the company is famous for: build quality, electronics precision, material reliability and other distinctive features of the Bavarians. The hero of our today's discussion is designed for comfortable travel on any surface and light off-road. In addition, the car was assigned the class of sports cars.

General information

The first generation model had a load-bearing body structure. It was packed with electronic systems, all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and increased ground clearance. The E53 series was distinguished by a stylish and spacious interior, which was very restrained, solid and luxurious at the same time. The standard equipment of the machine included:

  • inserts made of wood and leather (classic for a German company);
  • orthopedic chairs;
  • steering wheel adjustment;
  • climate control;
  • electric sunroof;
  • very roomy trunk.

To some extent, the E53 model still managed to catch up and surpass Range Rover. Many details were frankly copied from the legendary SUV: the solidity of the exterior, the double-leaf rear door. With the Rover, the X5 also comes with some functions, for example, speed control on the descent.

Specifications X5 "BMW E53"

The first generation of the legendary crossover was repeatedly refined both externally and constructively. One gets the impression that the Germans wanted to be ahead of their time and bring their creation to complete perfection. Initially, the car was produced, equipped with three different options for the power plant:

  1. Gasoline engine 6-cylinder in-line.
  2. The motor is 8-cylinder V-shaped. This type of engine was made of aluminum and featured a self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection and digital electronics. Thanks to the powerful engine (286 hp), the car reached a speed of 100 km / h in almost 7 seconds. The motor is equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos gas distribution mechanism, which made it possible to squeeze the maximum speed out of the power plant at any speed. The engine was equipped with a 5-speed. This motor was considered the most interesting.
  3. Diesel engine 6-cylinder.

Later, new, more powerful motors appeared. German mechanics have created an innovative torque distribution system: when a wheel slips, the program slows it down and gives more revolutions to the other wheels. This and much more determines the high cross-country ability of the car as a crossover. The rear axle has special elastic elements, which are based on pneumatics. Even under high load, the electronics maintains the ride height at the correct level.

The brake system X5 "BMW E53" also has its own zest. Large brake discs, together with an emergency stop control program, significantly increase the braking force. The above system takes effect when the brake pedal is fully depressed. The crossover also has a speed hold setting of about 11 km / h when descending from an incline. As for that in the basic versions, a manual transmission was available, and as an option - an automatic transmission. "BMW X5 E53" in expensive trim levels was immediately equipped with an automatic transmission.

Despite such an abundance of positive qualities, the car was far from a real SUV. The frame was soon changed to a load-bearing body, which naturally affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans were very keen on automation, although it often prevents the driver from solving a particular problem. For example, when entering a mountain or getting into a rut, the electronics does not allow you to downshift. And on sharp turns, the gas pedal freezes, and you can take the car to the desired radius only with the help of the steering wheel.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the technical part

Obeying the laws of the market, since 2003 the Germans began to modernize the E53 model:

  1. All-wheel drive has been completely redone.
  2. The xDrive system was improved as much as possible: the electronics began to analyze the condition of the roadway, the steepness of bends, measure the data obtained with the driving mode and independently regulate the torque between the axles.
  3. Lateral roll and damping are automatically adjusted.
  4. Parking has become easier thanks to the presence of two cameras.
  5. The brakes received a system for removing moisture from the discs.
  6. The system is so smart that any sudden release of your foot from the gas pedal is interpreted by it as preparation for emergency braking.

The V-shaped gasoline engine received the Valvetronic system, which regulates valve travel, as well as smooth intake adjustment. As a result, the engine power reached 320 hp. sec., and acceleration to the cherished 100 km was reduced to 7 seconds. The maximum speed, depending on the tires, was 210-240 km / h. Another useful change: the 5-speed gearbox has been replaced with a 6-speed one.

The upgraded crossover received a new diesel engine with a capacity of 218 liters. With. and a torque of up to 500 Nm. With this engine, even the most unpredictable obstacles were completely obeyed by the BMW X5 E53. The diesel engine could reach a speed of 210 km / h, and accelerated to 100 km in 8.3 seconds.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the interior and exterior

The body shape was also slightly changed, and the hood received a new, more expressive, radiator grille. The already respectable car began to look even more interesting. However, due to the plastic body kit, the car seemed a little softer. The bumpers and headlights have also undergone minor revisions. The body length has increased by 20 cm, which is quite a lot. The lengthening made it possible to add a third row of seats and make the interior removed obsessive excesses and slightly modified the dashboard.

The restyled body has achieved near-perfect aerodynamic results. Its Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is very good for a crossover.

Luxury pay

All of the above qualities, dressed in a chic shell, could well have become a reason for bringing the X5 E53 into the ranks of a luxury car, which entails not always pleasant consequences. For example, spare parts for this car cost a lot of money. However, taking into account the Bavarian quality, the repair of the BMW X5 E53 was extremely rare for the owner. But what really amazes is the appetite of the crossover. With 10 liters per 100 km declared in the passport, it consumes almost twice as much. Another 5 liters - and the consumption will be comparable to the legendary "Hummer".

Achievements

Be that as it may, in 2002 in Australia, this model was recognized as the best four-wheel drive car. And after 3 years, she got into Top Gear and thereby confirmed her title. It was by analogy with this car that such famous cars as the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and

In 2007, the history of the BMW X5 E53 car ended, and it was replaced by the new X5 with the E70 index.

BMW X5 E53- the first crossover of the BMW brand, which was launched in 1999. At the time of the start of production of the X5, the cost of the crossover was about $ 120,000, but despite the price tag, the crossover was immediately in demand among buyers.

The X5 crossover was produced until 2006, and in 2003 it “survived” a restyling. Today the price for the E53 body starts from ~ 400,000, it depends on the modification, configuration, condition and reaches ~ 1,500,000 rubles.

Restyling

What is the difference between restyling and dorestyling ?!

Visually, since this is the first thing we see in front of us. But do not forget that with dorestyling it is quite possible to make a restyled model, and if desired, at least an exact copy of the Le Mans prototype. To find out, for example, the complete set or the production date, it is possible to "break through" the VIN number of the car on special Internet services.

Various options for gearboxes before restyling and restyling.

Differences in the drive. On a pre-styled car, the all-wheel drive system distributes torque in a proportion of 38% to the front wheels and 62% to the rear. On restyled models, the moment is distributed depending on the situation - from 0: 100 to 50:50.

Body

The body of the BMW X5 E53 is not susceptible to corrosion, however, there are also reckless drivers among the drivers. Therefore, check the body for an accident.

When examining a dirty car, you should think about its further "study", as under the mud it is possible to hide many problem areas.

Pay attention to the gaps between the body elements, they must be the same. Test all door hinges for slack, especially on the driver's side - to do this, open the door and wiggle it. Loose hinges may well be the result of a side impact.

The most problematic part of the BMW X5 body in the E53 body is the lower part of the rear lining under the lower tailgate, which corrodes due to moisture ingress.

The paintwork on this crossover may not be perfect, and small chips and scratches are normal. Look at the backs of the doors for corrosion, and given the age of the car, pay more attention to its scale. A slight and barely noticeable manifestation of it can still be corrected, but a serious manifestation of corrosion in the future will lead to serious problems with the body.

Interior

While in the car, the state of some individual elements may well give an idea of the real mileage of the car. Inspect the driver's seat, namely its sidewalls, the wear of the pedals and the steering wheel, but you should also not forget about the overlays on the above-mentioned interior elements, the use of which may erroneously give an idea of the real mileage. Also check the functionality of all buttons.

Without the presence of any diagnostic equipment, it is not possible to find out the state of the automotive electronics. In such a situation, check the operation of the indicators on the instrument panel. Turn the ignition key, and pay attention to the airbag indicator, which goes out a little later from the rest, it will at least show you that the airbag indicator wire is not connected to any other wire.

Engines

Under the hood of the BMW X5, gasoline engines of 3.0, 4.4, 4.6 (dorestyling only), 4.8 liters (restyling only) and a 3.0-liter diesel power unit were installed.

With which engine to choose BMW X5 E53 ?! First of all, start from your budget and from what you want to "get" from the car.

Popular and reliable

The most common and popular modification of the BMW X5 E53 is the 3.0i gasoline version with the BMW M54 inline 6-cylinder power unit. This engine has proven itself well not only on the X5, but also on other BMW cars.

The BMW E53 3.0 cannot boast of particularly sporty dynamics (since, unlike, for example, the 530i in the E39 body, the X5 has slightly different aerodynamic performance, and the crossover's curb weight is almost 0.5 tons more), but it will not deprive you of driving pleasure.

In BMW X5 3.0 with M54, a frequent problem is the leakage of the rear crankshaft oil seal, which will be clearly noticeable when the car is raised. If this problem occurs directly during the operation of the car, it is necessary to change the ventilation of the crankcase gases (1 time in 2 oil changes, that is, at ~ 30,000 km of run). The cause of this problem is clogging of the ventilation, as a result of which the oil begins to act under pressure, and since it is more difficult to push the gasket, it seeps through the rear oil seal of the crankshaft.

Inspect the pallet gasket carefully. If oil oozes along the sump gasket, in most cases this means that there will be problems with the engine in the near future. The reason for the appearance of a leak is the squeezing out of oil gases through the gasket of the sump.

Economical

The budget model BMW E53 3.0 diesel with a reliable M57 engine was offered in two versions - dorestyling with a capacity of 184 hp. and after restyling 218 hp. It is worth noting that the restyled modification 3.0d in terms of dynamic performance is almost on a par with the 3.0-liter petrol version, and has significantly lower fuel consumption.

Powerful

When choosing with a V8 engine between BMW E53 4.4 vs 4.6 vs 4.8 - again, start from your budget - for better dynamics and higher consumption you will have to pay extra not only for consumables, but also for car maintenance or repairs. So, for example, the timing belt chain on a 6-cylinder engine will last 2 times longer, while on a V8 the chain needs to be changed once every 200,000 km.

In this range, the most popular 8-cylinder model is 4.4 (more than 120,000 copies were produced in total). But it is worth noting that the fuel consumption of the restyled version 4.4 with the N62 engine is practically equal to that of a 4.8-liter model with the same engine.

The motor itself (H62) is, as a whole, a reliable power unit, but given the duration of operation, time takes its toll. The main problem areas of this engine are the valve stem seals, which lead to increased oil consumption and the appearance of "scuffing".

As for the choice of a BMW E53 4.6 equipped with a BMW M62 engine, you need to look at the car itself, or rather its condition. This model is only available in a pre-styled body, and the fuel consumption figures are slightly higher than those of the 4.8-liter model that replaced it in 2004.

What should you pay attention to?

When inspecting the engine, pay attention to the presence of fresh oil drips on the sides.

As with any engine, and not only the BMW brand, the cooling system can overheat, and one of the popular overheating problems is a clogged radiator, which must be periodically cleaned. Pay attention to it when examining the engine compartment, and then draw a conclusion yourself based on its condition.

BMW engines are demanding on the quality of the oil, so the manufacturer recommends using only high-quality synthetic oils, since it serves not only as a lubricant, but also cools the engine.

Transmission

BMW X5 E53 was equipped with a 5-speed manual and 5-, 6-speed automatic transmission.

Prior to the 2003 lineup update, all models were equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission, while 3.0i / 3.0d versions were also available with a 5-speed manual. After restyling, a 6-speed automatic transmission was installed on the crossovers.

In terms of reliability, there are no special complaints about the BMW X5 transmission, and with proper care, as well as under moderate loads, there will be no problems in operation.

Despite the fact that the automatic transmission is considered "out of service", nevertheless, the oil must be changed once every 60,000 km.

To check the automatic transmission before purchasing, set the gearshift lever to the "Drive" position, as a result of which the car must go independently, both forward and backward.

During a test drive, accelerate by pressing the gas pedal, when you hear a switch to second gear, release the gas pedal - if at this moment you feel a "kick" (a common automatic transmission problem), this means that the gearbox has technical problems.

Suspension

The suspension of the BMW X5 E53 is structurally similar to the suspension of the "five" E39, but less powerful, since the X5 has a slightly different purpose.

The lifespan of suspension parts is directly dependent on driving style and the quality of the replacement parts.

Outcome

In general, the first BMW X5 is a fairly reliable car, in principle, like any other vehicle, of course, given the high-quality assembly, its components and driving style.

When buying a crossover, look first of all at the condition of the car, be sure to carry out diagnostics, and having two keys will be an advantage.

Happy choice and driving pleasure.

Sort of, the X6 is also not a miss. But for every macho driving a black X-six, there are a dozen Instagram blondes in the same car. And this ultimately pushes the male audience into the open arms of the tuning masters. The first X5 looks at this mess with the condescension of a pioneer. He needs third-party tweaks like hipster sneakers and shorts to Jason Statham.

This hero of road showdowns in a restyled form is especially good. The nostrils are wider, the eyes are bolder, and the muscles, muscles, muscles ... The essentially respectable five-door body bulges from the pressure of protruding muscles. Born to rule the city and overtake on the highway, he is a stranger to false modesty.

Inside

Beige leather, an abundance of wood - at the request of the first owner, E53 could radiate the immodest charm of the bourgeoisie. Among the universally driver-oriented cockpits of other BMWs, the symmetrical interior of the X5 at the time of its debut looked at least unusual. But the Bavarian spirit hovers, hovers over the multilayer front panel, dotted with the familiar E39 five-piece fittings! The ergonomics of the benchmark is clear and familiar to everyone who came across a BMW before the iDrive era.

Front seats from the category of comfortable (according to BMW classification) will easily give odds to other sports competitors. Great profile, dense padding, tons of adjustments and memory - what more could you ask for? In terms of configuration, there is definitely nothing: in addition to the panoramic roof, there are almost all positions from the configurator. At the back, the X5, sporting a spacious heated sofa and a separate climate unit, struggles to pretend to be a family car. But the animal essence cannot be hidden.

In move

When the crossover boom in the premium segment began, an arms race was inevitable. But here's the paradox. Have you forgotten that the ML, Touareg and even the Cayenne are SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicle)? And why a really powerful engine for a family car according to the ideology? The Bavarians acted more cunningly. The X5 is not an SUV, but a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). So here's a 4.4-liter V8 with 320 hp. And no paradoxes.

Engine

V8, 4.4L, 320hp

Less than five minutes after the start of the trip, I managed to get a speeding ticket. The slightest touch of the gas pedal is perceived by the X5 as a signal for an immediate and furious attack. At the same time, you are standing at a traffic light or are already rushing in front of the stream - meaningless details. The motor, which has proven itself well on "fives", "sixes" and "sevens", is the best fit for the dashing image of the X5. It has it all, including tremendous elasticity and a menacing low rumble, under which the crossover accelerates powerfully and confidently, like a three-liter "treshka". The ZF's adaptive six-speed automatic is the second culprit for excellent driving dynamics. Fast-firing like a machine gun even in normal mode, with a kickdown it immediately jumps several steps down. At the same time, the switches are imperceptible, like the doorman of a five-star hotel, and they can only be caught by the swinging arrow of the tachometer.

BMW X5 E53
Declared consumption per 100 km

Theoretically, in comparison with its predecessor, the new automatic machine also saves fuel, but it is not possible to check this. A light movement of the steering wheel is enough to understand: somewhere in the bowels of the body, hitherto alien to the ideology of the blue and white propeller, the spirit of E34, E46 and so on lives on the fan list. Despite the mass of over two tons, despite the high center of gravity, dispensing with any electronically controlled shock absorbers, the X5 is driven worse than any other sports car. Not least thanks to the intelligent all-wheel drive xDrive, which keeps all wheels under constant control, instantly directing the moment where it is needed. If necessary, from 32 to 50% of traction can be sold on the front axle. The steering pleases with high sensitivity and good feedback. Unwavering straight-line stability is paired with minimal cornering, which the black bruiser devours with the enthusiasm and skill of a pro.

The energy-intensive suspension is tuned in the best BMW tradition. X5 resiliently fulfills small and medium bumps, combining excellent handling and noble gait, even on chipped asphalt. Slowing down, you quickly notice that the recent aggressor may well behave intelligently, just dosed use of the accelerator is enough. It is not difficult to do this thanks to the long-stroke and rather stiff gas pedal. It turns out that that fine is entirely my fault, and the X5 seems to have nothing to do with it. However, I do not believe this impudent Bavarian muzzle: it has led too many people astray.

Purchase history

The ideal of a charismatic car is different for everyone. Maxim saw this as a Hummer H3 or BMW X5. Since it was not possible to find a living copy of the restyled American SUV, all efforts were thrown into the search for the Bavarian crossover. Having the opportunity to buy a second-generation X5, Maxim chose to choose from living E53s. The matter was complicated by the fact that he was only interested in versions with a 4.4-liter V8, preferably restyled ones. There was no question of finding an unused copy with a 4.6 or 4.8 engine. In good condition, they are a rarity even in Europe.

As a result, the search took almost a year. During this time, Maxim managed to make a lot of useful contacts, which helped to find a worthy copy that arrived at the trade-in of one of the St. Petersburg salons from the distant Naryan-Mar. A copy of 2005, purchased from an authorized dealer, had one owner for the TCP and 134,000 km of its native run. The price was the average market by the standards of 2015, 650,000 rubles.

Repair

Despite the low mileage and the presence of a considerable number of factory parts, the previous owners did not bother themselves with competent car maintenance. Therefore, in the first few months, the matter was not limited to replacing all oils (including in the distributor), filters, candles and pads in a circle along with wear sensors. All radiators were washed, the fuel rail was cleaned with the passing replacement of all rubber bands. Replaced steering rods, water pump, gaskets (cylinder head, valve cover, injectors), upper and lower cooling pipes, V-ribbed radiator and air conditioner belts, lower ball joint of the front suspension and outer CV joint anthers, front hub bearing, differential oil seal. The DMRV, the cabin filter housing, the air conditioner and the stove have been cleaned. In winter, the headlight washer motor and the rear wiper motor had to be changed, the body of which fell apart in two.

After driving about 5,000 kilometers on regional roads in a month, X5 asked for a service. Clips flew out on the rear door cards, in the wheel arch liners and on the bottom of the sills, and the ball joints of the lower front levers knocked. Together with the replacement of the leaking left drive oil seal, the oil in the gearbox was changed. The radiators, which had a finger-thick layer of dust, were thoroughly washed.

When the engine vibration began to pester in the Drive position and during braking, it was necessary to replace the engine mounts, transfer case mounts, water pump pulley and valve cover. Then it only remained to eliminate the leaks of the camshaft sensors and service the front and rear suspensions, including replacing the support for the subframe cushion and the gear cushion.

Few improvements, and everything is in the subject. Maxim installed the dashboard from version 4.8 is (12,000 rubles) and replaced the steering wheel, modifying its geometry.

Exploitation

Maxim has increased the mileage of his X5 by 50,000 km. The car completely suits him, and he does a lot himself. He performs the same replacement of door handles (the X5 sore spot) in a matter of minutes. He does not save on spare parts, preferring to use the original. Recently, when the hoses and the power steering radiator started flowing, it was decided to replace the entire power steering system together with the reservoir, which cost almost 90,000 rubles.

Costs:

  • Regular maintenance with oil change (Mobil1 0W40 (USA)) and oil filter - every 8,000 km
  • Fuel consumption in the urban cycle - 22.5 l / 100 km
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 11/100 km
  • Combined fuel consumption - 17 l / 100 km
  • Fuel - AI-98

Plans

Maxim is planning a comprehensive Hamann tuning. The original exhaust with catalysts and resonators is already waiting in the wings, a firmware for the engine has been purchased. On the way, the front and rear bumpers, in the search - the lining on the arches. Everything is done for yourself, slowly and efficiently.

Model history

The first generation of the BMW crossover appeared in 1999, after six years of painstaking work. The developments of Land Rover, which belonged to the Bavarians at that time, became a serious help. Technically, the first X5 (E53 body) had a lot in common with the Range Rover, the then "five" E39 and "seven" E38.

The least that the buyer could count on when choosing a motor - a three-liter inline "six" in petrol (231 hp) or diesel (184 hp) versions. There were two options with a V8: a civilian 4.4 l (286 hp) and a sporty 4.6 is (347 hp). Gearboxes are a rare five-speed mechanic and an automatic with the same number of gears. The drive is permanent full.

After restyling in 2003, the exterior has become even more aggressive, and the motors are more powerful. The diesel engine began to produce 218 hp, and the "eights" - 320 and 360 hp. Responsibly. The automatic was replaced with a six-speed one, the all-wheel drive, named xDrive, became plug-in, an armored version of Security appeared in the B4 / VR4 class. In this form, the X5 E53 was produced until 2006, when it was replaced by a second-generation crossover with the E70 index.
