Second generation Land Rover Freelander in the aftermarket. TD4 Freelander 2 diesel engine pros and cons

Land Rover Freelander is a compact crossover in two generations, serial production of the model started in 1997, its main production was established in Great Britain.

Land Rover Freelander-2 is a second generation SUV, produced from 2006 to 2014. In this article, we will consider the technical characteristics of the car, its cost in the market, and also find out what reviews car owners leave about this car.

Freelander-2

For the first time, a new model of Freelander-2 car was presented at the International Motor Show in Great Britain, but if the name of the car was preserved for Europe, then in North America Freelander began to be sold as LR2 (since 2007). The base of the crossover was the Ford C1 platform, later Volvo cars began to be assembled on it.

Unlike Freelander-1, the second Freelander became safer for the driver, earning 5 stars in the Euro NCAP system. The ground clearance has also been increased, so the cross-country ability of the compact SUV has become better.

In 2010, Freelander-2 underwent a restyling, the main changes were made to the engines. Basically, the modernization was aimed at reducing harmful emissions from the car's exhaust pipe into the atmosphere, as well as saving fuel. But there were also external changes:

  • new taillights were installed;
  • the front bumper has been updated;
  • fog lights have undergone changes;
  • alloy wheels with a different pattern appeared.

The tailgate handle in the restyled version began to be painted in body color, the car itself added a little in width (by 95 millimeters).

Specifications Land Rover Freelander-2

The 2nd generation British SUV was produced in Halwood (England), Jordan and India. The car was equipped with only five types of engines, two of which Freelander was equipped with from 2006 to 2010:

  • turbodiesel TD4 2.2 l co-production Ford
  • 2-liter petrol 6-cylinder Volvo engine.

In 2010, the 2.2 liter diesel engine was upgraded and became available in two versions - TD4 150 (160) horsepower and SD4 190 horsepower. with., and the engine 3.2 Volvo brought to compliance with Euro-5 standards. Since 2012, the crossover has been equipped with a turbocharged gasoline engine 2.0 l Si4 with a capacity of 240 hp. with., this motor replaced the inline "six" 3.2.

Paired with a gasoline engine is only an automatic six-speed gearbox, the diesel can be equipped with a 6-speed. Automatic transmission, and 6-speed. manual transmission. The front suspension of the Freelander is of the McPherson type, the rear is multi-link, ventilated brake discs are installed on the front axle, the rear brakes are also disc, but without ventilation.

Technical characteristics of Land Rover Freelander-2 (restyling) are as follows:

  • length - 4.5 m;
  • height - 1.74 m;
  • width - 2.195 m;
  • wheel track on the front axle - 1.611 m;
  • wheel track on the rear axle - 1.624 m;
  • clearance - 21 cm;
  • minimum turning circle - 11.3 m;
  • full / equipped weight - 2505/1780 kg;
  • steering - with hydraulic booster;
  • trunk volume - 755 liters (with folded seats - 1670 liters);
  • number of seats in the cabin - 5;
  • lifting capacity - 550 kg.

The 2.2 TD4 diesel engine on the second Freelander is distinguished by enviable efficiency, with a sufficiently large mass the car consumes 5.8 liters of fuel per 100 km on the highway, 7.9 liters in the city, and 6.6 liters in mixed mode.

The Land Rover body is made of high quality steel and is highly corrosion resistant.

Owner reviews

According to car owners, the most important advantages of the Freelander-2 crossover are:

But the British car still has disadvantages:

  • Freelander-2 with a 3.2 liter gasoline "six" consumes a lot of fuel;
  • if the car breaks down, repairs are not cheap - original spare parts are expensive;
  • not too big trunk.

Here are some reviews of the Land Rover Freelander 2 crossover.

Vladimir ... The car is 2008, the overall impression of the car is very good - excellent cross-country ability, excellent driving performance. True, I cannot call Friel economical, with a 3.2 gasoline engine fuel consumption can reach 18-20 liters in the city. The rest is happy with everything.

Yuri ... Land Rover 2010, mileage 48 thousand km, diesel 2.2. This is my second SUV, only positive emotions. Economy car - 11-12 liters in the city, on the highway no more than 8. Ergonomics at the level, of the minuses, I note the high prices for parts and service from authorized dealers.

Alexander ... 2008 Freelander, 2.2 liter turbodiesel. The car is comfortable and convenient, but I did not think that it would be less reliable. At -35, the engine does not want to start. Once I was driving through the city, the information “limited power” appeared on the board. The car stopped, I had to call a tow truck. It turned out that there was a short circuit in the injector. After 38 tons. Km, everything repeated again, they say, I fill in bad diesel fuel. Another problem with the windshields, I have already changed two. Maybe it’s just unlucky, others, 150 thousand each, pass without problems.

Michael ... Took a new SUV from OD, 2013, 2.2 TD. Pros - excellent sound insulation, low consumption, there is simply no car equal on the highway. I did not find any flaws, except that the trunk is somewhat small. I will buy the next car, and the choice will be the same.

Vyacheslav ... Freelander 2007, diesel 2.2 l. An excellent car, I especially realized this in winter, on long trips you don't get tired at all. On the road, the car drives steadily, excellent cross-country ability. The diesel is economical and traction, convenient control of the radio on the steering wheel, there is a heated windshield. The protection of the crankcase is not well thought out, dirt when driving off-road is stuffed between the engine and the protection. As a result, the fuel hoses were torn.

Paul ... 2007 car, TD4 turbodiesel. Dashed off 140 tons. Km, I can say that Friel is a balanced car, good both in the city and on the highway. In winter, in severe frosts, antigel was added to the tank, the car started up normally. For all the time there was not a single serious problem, except that the battery charging light came on once - there was a poor contact in the wires. I do not like the small volume of the trunk, the dashboard is not very readable. More expensive service.

Prices and configuration

The restyled version of the Freelander-2 is produced in four trim levels:

S - this is the basic version, its equipment includes:

  • seven airbags;
  • HDC, ASR, ESP, EBA, EBD, ABS systems;
  • fog lights;
  • air conditioning (cruise control);
  • heated seats, windshield, mirrors;
  • Rain sensor;
  • CD player;
  • multi-wheel;
  • light sensor;
  • 6 speakers.

The car is equipped with a full-size spare wheel, R17 alloy wheels, a Webasto pre-heater for cars with a diesel engine. The SUV is equipped with a standard spring suspension, and the car is equipped with pneumatics at the request of the client to order for an additional fee.

The richest configuration is HSE, here the following options are additionally provided:

  • bi-xenon headlights;
  • parking sensors;
  • folding electric mirrors;
  • heated washer nozzles;
  • bluetooth communication;
  • leather interior;
  • wood-effect dashboard trim;
  • front armrest.

The HSE version is equipped with dual-zone climate control, 8 speakers, light-alloy wheels R18 or R19.

Although the car is no longer in series production, you can buy Freelander-2 from authorized dealers. The minimum price in the basic configuration in 2017 starts from 1 million 650 thousand rubles. In the maximum equipment, the SUV will cost about 2.5 million rubles, and many more cars are sold in the secondary market.

Used Freelander-2 crossovers are offered for sale at an average price of 580 thousand to 1.7 million rubles, depending on the year of car production, configuration and mileage. The most popular engine is the TD4 turbocharged diesel engine, almost all cars are sold with automatic transmission, manual transmissions are rare on the Freelander.

Freelander-2 Maintenance

Although the British SUV is considered a fairly reliable car, without timely maintenance, its components and assemblies will fail ahead of time. On the Internet, you can often find interesting stories about how the car drove more than 300 thousand kilometers without a single major repair. But this is possible only if the maintenance was always carried out on time, and the car was not subjected to merciless exploitation.

For an SUV to serve for a long time, you must:

  • change the engine oil after 10 thousand km;
  • in an automatic transmission after 60 t. km (more often possible);
  • replace fuel and air filters after 25 t. km.

You should also not forget about the timing belt, it is changed after 130 t. Km. The Freelander's suspension is reliable, and before one hundred and fifty thousand kilometers it rarely requires repair, but much depends on the operating conditions.

Part 4.200000

Good day to all. There was a round figure on the odometer, I decided to write another review.

About auto.

Let me remind you that the car was bought new, in May 2011 at the OD, in Moscow, for 1.4 million. In the second configuration with some additional installed options. I am one owner.

Weekend car. I traveled on it almost all of central Russia from Murmansk to Abkhazia, from Brest to Mongolia. Regular autumn trips to Akhtuba. The car is good for long trips, no fatigue, the high bus landing, assembled, but soft suspension is very pleasing.

For 7 years, the exterior and interior have practically not suffered, with the exception of a few chips on the body and glass. The paintwork firmly holds the blows of operation. In no comparison with my previous Lancer and Civic. In general, most of all that I value in a car (for which I bought it) is solidity, brutality. Not a single cricket in 7 years, no suspension bounce, no squeak of cheap cardboard trim in the cabin. Everything is conscientious, all finishing materials, metal, you can't wash it with a finger, the quality of the paintwork. Yes, by design, everything is already quite modest, dull by today's standards, but the feeling of quality and solidity, comfort has not gone anywhere. Yes, there are a number of shortcomings, but for me they are not essential. I don't even notice.

The operation did not cause much trouble, and for the first 5 years I only went to MOT. The engine does not inspire enthusiasm for its power, it's a diesel after all. He is valuable to others. The first and main one is fuel consumption, which is 6.5-7 liters all year round. On a cruise, going 90-100 km / h when alone in the cabin and without a load, the computer showed 5.6 liters. According to my estimates, the difference is twofold compared to a similar petrol version. I have a friend at work who has an Outlander 2.4, he has an average consumption of 12 liters. Thus, roughly, the savings for 7 years amounted to about 350,000 rubles. I fill up everywhere, but at branded gas stations. Several times there were forced refueling at nameless gas stations and 2 times I "got". Once in winter, at a gas station next to my GSK, where I used to run a Honda without problems, I grabbed a summer diesel fuel in December. The second time last summer in the village of Ust-Kan, Altai Republic. After refueling 20 forced liters, the engine began to smoke gray. On the ascents there was a smoke screen like from a KAMAZ. Even at idle there was blue smoke from the chimney. That's it, khan's engine, or fuel, or catalyst, I thought then. Carried away.

The second plus is autonomy. In a quiet route mode, the tank (68 liters) is enough for 1000 km. Checked. 3. Torque. When you need to "whisper" to ascend at a minimum speed into a steep rocky ascent, for example, the engine allows you to do this without straining. On previous gasoline cars, in such cases, it was necessary to turn the engine forcing the suspension and rubber of the car.

But, there are also disadvantages. The first is to constantly monitor the battery. At first, in the early years, I planted it to zero a couple of times. Those who travel only around the city on a diesel engine, and even if they have a Webasto-type heater, they are favorites and are frequent customers of road technical support services in winter. The battery does not have time to charge in traffic jams. And even with a tricky Freelian smart battery charging system. People turn on the heating of everything and everything, everything that is possible is stuck into the cigarette lighter)) ... My opinion, a personal passenger car on a diesel engine in the city and with "autonomous" - gemmor and irrational action, no savings. It takes a long time to write, explaining the principle of Webasto, but those who will support me in the topic. The autonomy takes a very long time to heat up, and the battery energy is very good. Diesel is good for long runs.

The second problem is the problem of the plant in severe frost. For me, without preliminary warming up of Webasto, the engine with great tension for itself started even at -15. I am not responsible for all diesel engines, but Freel's is rather tender in this regard. Yes, it does, but with wild vibrations, double vision, triple vision, a smokescreen. But, after warming up Webasto, the plant has a half turnover. The problem is that for example, if the frost is 35, there is a possibility that it will not start at all. I had this once in 7 years. In January frosts of 2017, in a village 600 km from Moscow ... The car stood for two days in such a frost, in the wind. The battery almost dropped to zero (I did not know that then). I launch Webasto, it puffs for 5 minutes, stalls from the battery landing, goes into blocking. Auto corpse. Only after charging the battery for a day, I wound up. And who else has dead candles - everything, a tow truck, a warm garage, or wait for spring.

Anyone who drives a little by car is likely not to have time to switch from "summer" to "winter".

Another minus, subjective. The car is in the GSK box. Walk 15 minutes from the house. In winter, when you need to warm up the engine with autonomy, you need to go almost close to the garage door in order to start Webasto with the remote control. Previously, brains did not catch signals, noises. And here you are standing in the cold, early in the morning, in the dark, waiting, cleaning the snow from the gate, so that the car is warmed up with pre-heating for at least 15 minutes. Whoever has a car under the windows of the house does not have such discomfort, of course.

In short, diesel is more demanding for the winter mode of operation than gasoline, who are constantly in good shape and attentive to their cars have no problems. But if I lived somewhere in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, or in the Republic of Yakutia in the regions of our Siberia and the Urals, I definitely would not have bought it for personal purposes. Spring-summer-fall no problem. Even overheating is something you have to try. And only those who have not washed the radiators from fluff and dirt overheat.

And unambiguously, I can't say if I would like the next car to be diesel ... on Freelander, and the car is big, heavy - definitely yes. Pampering to have a car for personal use with a consumption of 15-20 liters. and more, I believe.

Service.

5 years and 145,000 km. as I said earlier, I drove without troubles. In fact, he only did THAT. I change the filter myself, I go to the specialized service to change the oil. In ordinary eateries like "Express" they themselves do not undertake to change, and you should not trust them. All because of the oil filter: 1. It is very difficult to get close to it, 2. The design is not in the usual sense, took it, screwed it on. Cartridge, in a cap flask with a sealing rubber. This elastic band is a delicate moment. If the gum is of a substandard cross-section (left), the oil will "fly away" very quickly. Wedge. Or, conversely, too large a cross-sectional diameter and the oil cartridge cover can be screwed on with difficulty, and unscrewing it is generally unrealistic, only by overdoing it by tearing off the turnkey splines. Which I did once. Somewhere ... I had to change this plastic "figurine" (3500r) ... There are no analogues.

I fill in the oil with 5W30. Up to 150,000 km. there was no burnout at all. Now it has begun to leave somewhere 0.5-0.7 liters per 10t.km. The last 3 years I have been driving Lukoil Lux. Before that there was an OD-th Castrol, then Motul. Recently I was in Pskov, I bought NESTE at a proprietary gas station for 4 replacements, I'm filling it now, I don't feel the difference. I think to go to the mileage of 250,000 to 5W40.

Once I changed the candles by 100 t.km, it turned out in vain (the battery died, the Polish Warta) only later made a problem. The candles were working, but the intake manifold gaskets were crooked. It was revealed after 2 years, when the engine began to frankly snot with oil from under the intake and the engine worked hard. The battery was supplied by Exide.

At 120 t.km. went to the Volvo service at Haldex's TO. With parsing, washing.

Every 3 years I change the power steering tank with fluid by the displacement method. Thanks to the club guruJ Every 3 years I changed the brake fluid. After 6 years, I replaced the brake hoses. After 5 years, I changed the antifreeze with flushing the radiators. In general, they were in vain, everything was clean there.

I also changed the oil in the front differential and in the box once. In the box recently, at 175 t.km, in principle in vain. The oil merged is conditioned, transparent, homogeneous, factory red. According to the regulations, it is supposed to be replaced every 240t.km. Filled with non-original Mobil Mobilube HD 75W90, but Castrol Syntrans V FE 75W80 is needed.

It is only under the order according to the original number. Programs with Mobile began to turn on badly in winter. Later, with the replacement of the flywheel, I changed the coupling again to the original. I change the fluid in the rear gearbox every year after winter. I fill in the usual Castrol EP 80W90 mineral water, because it makes no sense to pour good there. It will buzz anyway. The oil always merges inhomogeneous, cloudy, with water.

Regularly, once every 2 years, I disassemble, clean the parking brake mechanism, there is such a sore in these cars - they wedge them at the most inopportune moment. Corrosion… Like all freelancers, the rear brake light after car washes is flowing. I planted it on a sealant. I changed the rubber seals of the wheel arches, they crumbled, lost their shape to the rubber band of the VAZ-2112 tailgate seal. For all the time, two summer and one winter sets of tires have worn out. Summer almost at zero, factory Good Year and one set of the same company. Winter (Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV 5) with a wear rate of% 60 sold as used after 6 winters of use. Generally there is no wear on the rubber. Here is a summer one, I think with increased wear, according to my rough estimates, 50-55 thousand have passed. The paradox, the rubber is being worn down at an increased rate, but the brakes ... All the native discs and front pads are still there. Rear pads changed to 135000km. The friction layer has already begun to peel off. But, I'm just about to deliver everything new, bought long ago, at the end of 2014, at the old prices. Then I bought a lot when everyone rushed after cars and TVs.

The shock absorbers are getting tired, they are already starting to pierce the suspension with full load where it was not there before. I think by 220-250 t. I will change it right away with springs. The rest is still holding, the only, very insignificant backlash of one steering rod (bumped tangentially once into the curb). Because of this, the steering wheel skewed a little. I went like this until last year's trip to Altai, where this joint surfaced. On the Moscow-Gorno-Altaysk section, the rubber was eaten to zero on one side. The local tire service tightened up the traction on the wheel alignment. The rear wheel took a little more, but everything was sour there, since no one had climbed there for 7 years. Now only cut with a grinder and drill out the bolts.

Replaced the gas stops for the hood and trunk lids. I put a Swedish analogue on the trunk, I was dissatisfied with it, although not much cheaper than the original (1250 rubles). I decided not to be goofy on the hood and bought an analogue (2500r).

At the 7th year of life, signs of corrosion appeared outwardly. The body is without galvanizing, as I understand it, and it makes itself felt. Firstly, the paint swelled up in small bubbles (match head) under those chips that I did not notice in time and did not paint over with a pencil. There are also bubbles on the rear door shower drain. Rust marks on the arch of one left wheel (stoned). Processed .. The tailgate under the molding rusts, but here "thanks" to the Krivoruky OD for repairs on hull insurance after a small accident. Also, I tint, it does not creep yet. I want to self-antikorit spars under the bottom. So far, only they corrode. And then we will see. The car, of course, runs all year round, on different roads, in the provinces the roads are still sprinkled with salt, not always mine after that ... There is nothing eternal.

Breakdowns.

In general, the car practically did not annoy with breakdowns. Only in the 6th year and by the run of 150,000 did it immediately pile up and hit the wallet noticeably. It was the summer of 2016.

Chronology.

38,000 - hood end switch (500r). I changed it myself. Most likely, it was splashed during a very heavy rain.

52,000 - a wedge of parking brake pads in one of the wheels. On my way. In a nearby service, they disassembled and cleaned. Subsequent complete disassembly cleaning the mechanisms of both rear wheels on your own

61,000 - Rear differential hummed. The most massive and widespread Freelander disease. Made under warranty.

98,000 - burned out "size" (18r). Replacement on your own

99 900 - repeated wedge of the parking brake pads in one of the wheels. Subsequent complete disassembly cleaning the mechanisms of both rear wheels on your own

110,000 - one of the car key fobs refused to leave the lock slot without assistance due to the "swelling" of the opening buttons. I bought an analogue on Ali (420r).

123,000 - refusal of the tailgate opening handle. Also a common disease, "thanks" to FORD, from FF2-station wagon one-to-one piece. Replacement on your own (2100r)

143 500 - EGR valve cooler (32500r). A very dreary replacement, inaccessibility, sour bolts ... At first, in one service, the scan showed an error on the valve itself, there was no doubt that it was in it, EGR heat exchangers rarely break down. I bought an analogue of Piersburg (12000r). When I went to change, they changed it and the check did not go out, after scanning it again it turned out that there was an error in the heat exchanger. I ordered a part at Autodok, I bring it - not that one! It turned out that for my restyled modification there is another EGR cooler, more complicated, with a vacuum typewriter of some kind. I had to get a little nervous and quarrel with the return and wait for the part with the correct article.

144,000 - air conditioner compressor freewheel. Overheat. Very rare breakage, rare part, (15000 r).

144 300 - air conditioning compressor. Overheating, wedge. (29000r). The saddest and most unpleasant moment of all time. Brief history is as follows. In the spring of 1916, I went to a service (I will call it LR service) to wash the radiators, replace the belts with rollers, along the way, even then, the intake manifold gaskets were changed. In June, on the track, the overrunning compressor clutch rattled and it wedged, the drive belt was torn. Tow truck. In the LR service they put a new one, they determine that the compressor is almost jammed, they give it to me, I take it for repair to the AUTOMATICA firm on Krasnobogatyrskaya, 2. People, remember this office and never, NEVER go there! This is the only place in Moscow where DENSO compressors are (supposedly) repaired. These idiots, instead of repairing my compressor, sold a rebuilt one, as soon as my new clutch was rearranged. There was a very long scandal, swearing, it hurts to remember, spent a lot of nerves then, spat, took it, brought it to the service, put it on the car. I went home, the compressor only works when the car is moving. At idle, hot air flows from the air ducts in the plug. I didn’t go to this Automation right away ... 2 months later, after my vacation and a trip to Astrakhan, I went to them, do the diagnostics, and it turns out that I have…. the fans for blowing the radiators do not work at all! I go to the LR service, there, after a long search, they find an open circuit. The wiring on the fan ECU was rubbed against one of the pipes. Curtain! My version. In the spring, when I was digging in the engine compartment in this LR service with the parsing and removal of all radiators, pipes, belts, intake manifolds, everything was crooked and this wire was assembled on the fans, rubbed, rubbed for a couple of months, until it was wiped, the fans “stood up”. Freon in the condenser of the kondeya began to cool down insufficiently, the pressure in the system was excessive all the time. So he began to wedge the compressor, from this the clutch burned out. Half of the summer I traveled with non-working fans, I even managed to go to Astrakhan and back! I didn’t overheat just because the diesel engine, the summer was cold and it wasn’t stuck in traffic jams, all runs along the highway. The master of that service made excuses for a long time, calling all this nonsense. Alas, the causal relationship cannot be restored. He has his own version, I have my own ... I did not find a single topic about a wire break on the club forum. How did I manage not to notice? So, the diesel engine rattles so much that in the cabin, outside you can not hear whether the fans are working, and even rarely when they turn on, the engine is cold.

At the moment, that with the second, restored compressor, God only knows whether he had time to suffer too ... And this situation does not make me happy at all. New set -65t. + 10 work. In thought.

158 500 - repeated hum of the rear gearbox. I went through everything in the same LR service (16000r). This time we did it qualitatively and very quickly.

182,000 - one taillight connector has collapsed. More precisely, after an accident, when the bumper of the OD was changed, the plug was apparently badly inserted into the connector, there was no plastic wedge-retainer at all when he climbed there himself. First, I changed the turn signal lamp, it did not help, then I looked at the contacts, they were all oxidized, turned green. I cleaned it, filled it with electric grease and fixed it with a homemade wedge. As long as everything is in place, the flashlight is functioning.

198,000 - dual-mass flywheel (21,000r). In principle, he himself hastened the death. In February of this year, after a heavy snowfall, it skidded. After that, the stench from the burnt clutch and itching, vibration on the pedal when squeezing the clutch began to go periodically. Disc + basket (12000r), release bearing (1000r) are also changed. The disc was still alive. Plus, along the way, they replaced: the rear oil seal of the crankshaft (1200r), which began to sweat, the hydraulic tube of the clutch release (1000r), oil in the box (4500r) and something else.

Summary.

A car with character, requires a certain amount of attention. If you follow the car and treat small corporate whims with restraint, then the thrill from owning a car is not transferable. Even when they were being taken on a tow truck, thoughts did not run to get rid of. Friel is like a family member to me. And the attitude towards him is appropriate. Change and do not think, is the point now? And what for? ...

Would I buy it myself again now? At current prices, definitely not! And in general, more than a million and more difficult than Duster, I would not buy anything. Waste of money is the purchase of movable property. Other worries already.

Land rover freelander the second generation appeared in 2006, and before this year - since 1997, the first generation was produced, which cannot be called a reliable car.

Now we will analyze the 2nd generation for possible operational problems and it will be seen whether the updated car has become better than its predecessor.

Freelander's steel body is made, in British style, from high-quality metal, most of the parts are electroplated. Such a body is too tough for rust. True, body electrical appliances are poorly protected from dampness - there were cases that after about 4 years the rear wiper motor jammed due to dirt getting into it, a new such motor will cost 150 euros.

It happens that corrosion forms on the contacts in the trunk release button, after which the electric tailgate lock starts to knock... The same can happen with other doors in the car.

Additional brake light leaking, and water gets into the trunk, and all because of a weak seal. Even the sunroof leaks on cars built before 2008. Then a revision was made, after which this problem was fixed. And inside the taillights, near the light bulbs, plastic melts after a period of operation.

In the cabin, in general, everything is done soundly, there are no squeaks even on the early models. The leather on the steering wheel can grow bald over time, and the linings on the B-pillars are also wiped with seat belts.

Engines

Most Freelander are equipped with 2.2-liter turbodiesel DW12... In early cars, fuel injectors did not last long and required replacement, and they cost a lot - 450 euros each. After about 80,000 km. a fuel pump from Bosch can jam, a new one costs 1200 euros. There have also been cases when a rather expensive (250 euros) exhaust camshaft burst. And in especially advanced cases, the timing belt was torn, the valves were bent, the cylinder head together with the pistons were deformed. To repair such a running engine, you have to spend several thousand euros. So, when you buy a used Freelander, you should definitely look in the service book, and if it is stated there that the high-pressure fuel pump and camshaft have been replaced under warranty, then this is a great success.

It also happens: the on-board computer shows that the engine is faulty, and the car emits a lot of smoke, which means that the problem is not in the engine, but in the intake manifold. One of the most tenacious parts of Freelander is considered a turbocharger, although it is expensive - 1,500 euros, but if you regularly change the air filter, it can easily withstand 200,000 km. mileage. As for the air radiator and intercooler pipes, they fail quite regularly - every 80,000 km, due to the fact that they lose their tightness. And after 100,000 km. usually The actuator on the intake manifold flap is badly worn... In terms of costs, the intercooler pipes cost about 100 euros, the air cooler 160 euros, and the automated air damper 120 euros.

Freelander, who served for about 8 years or traveled 120,000 km. the main radiator, which costs 320 euros, can leak and oil will flow through the crankshaft oil seals.

In winter, owners of diesel Freelander will find a flabby Webasto pre-heater. It happens that this happens due to malfunctions in the control module, but in most cases - it's all about the burner, if you change it, the problem will be solved, it costs about 150 euros. After 80,000 km, it is necessary to change the glow plugs, here it is important to unscrew the candles carefully so as not to disrupt the threads, which can be sour, then you will not have to repair the cylinder head.

Diesel engines come in various capacities: from 150 to 190 liters. With. But in terms of reliability, all diesel engines are about the same.
Gasoline engines do not have so many problems. During restyling in 2012 appeared new turbocharged engine from Ford from the EcoBoost line with a volume of 2 liters. This engine can be found on only 6% of Freelander. So far, this motor has no illnesses. The only thing is that the engine requires cleanliness and the use of high-quality gasoline.

There is also a 3.2 liter, 6-cylinder Volvo engine, which is installed on 5% of cars. This engine is also reliable, despite the fact that it consumes more fuel. There is a chain in the timing drive, which does not stretch even after 300,000 km. mileage.

But there are some troubles with such a motor in Freelander older than 2008 - an oil separator integrated into the valve cover is used in the crankcase ventilation system. This design is not particularly successful, because the hood of the ventilation system of the oil sump clogs up quickly enough and the engine becomes "sweaty" from oil in all places. In especially advanced cases the engine can push out the oil seals.

In order not to have to buy a new gasoline pump, which costs 300 euros, it is advisable to keep 30-40 liters of gasoline in the gas tank. In hot weather, this gasoline will cool the submersible unit, which is in the tank, without cooling it will not be able to function for a long time.

Transmission

Rare enough 6-speed manual gearbox Getrag Ford M66 has good durability and performance. Such a box is installed on only 7% of cars, it is completed in diesel versions of Freelander. Unless the clutch is not strong enough - early versions of cars required a clutch replacement after 60,000 km. But the developers made an upgrade, after which the clutch began to withstand 120,000 km. Replacement of this unit will cost 200 euros.

And most cars (93%) have a 6-speed automatic transmission Aisin Warner AWF21, which after some time twitching and slipping appeared... Especially such cases were on cars of the first batch and these boxes were changed under warranty. And in 2008, a service company was launched to replace or repair these boxes. Overall, this transmission is quite robust and can withstand 250,000 km. run without major repairs.

The main weak link in this box is the reverse gear, which will cost 1,300 euros to replace. At first, a strange hum appeared after acceleration over 60 km / h on cars whose mileage exceeded 60,000 km. If the car was still under warranty, the dealers would replace the entire gearbox. But in cars released after restyling in 2010, a rumble also appeared after 100,000 km. But under warranty, the entire box is no longer changed, but only the bearings are replaced.

More noise may appear after about 130,000 km. from wheel bearings: two rear ones will cost 100 euros, and the front ones come with a hub in one unit - 300 euros for 2 such units.

And if after about 180,000 km. will appear grinding or crunching when starting the car from a place, then it's all about the front gearbox, or rather, its angular transmission. If oil drips appear on the gearbox, this means that it is time to replace the worn out seals of the propeller shaft and drives. Cardan shaft up to 180,000 km. does not create problems, but after that vibrations or shocks may appear, then this is a clear sign that it is time to change it. Cardan replacement will cost 550 euros.

In order for the clutches in the multi-plate clutch of the rear axle drive to last longer, one must not forget every 50,000 km. change oil and filter. True, this will not eliminate the failure of the oil pump of this clutch, the electronic control unit can also fail, due to the ingress of dirt, and it costs a lot - 500 euros.

Freelander suspension 2

What does not create significant problems is the suspension, but on post-styled cars. Early models suffered from the front suspension after 70,000 km. the support bearings of the struts were broken, their replacement costs 40 euros, and after 40,000 km. required replacement of the outer steering tips, each of which costs 35 euros.

We tell you what to expect from the most popular "rogue" of the Land Rover brand in Russia - the compact Freelander 2, which preceded the current Discovery Sport.

Land Rover Freelander 2, which replaced the first generation of the junior "rogue" of the legendary off-road family in the mid-2000s, became the best-selling model of the British brand in Russia for many years, surpassing more impressive and better equipped SUVs in popularity. He is also known as the most reliable car in the history of the Land Rover company. But is this statement true?

Background

Crossover Freelander 2 under the factory index L359, which debuted in 2006 at the International Motor Show in London, has become a logical and more perfect continuation of its predecessor. While developing the new Friel, the British have done a tremendous amount of work on the mistakes. Retaining the recognizable style of the first generation car, Land Rover built the second generation of the crossover on the new Ford EUCD (Ford C1 Plus) platform, which also underlies the Ford Mondeo and S-Max / Galaxy, Volvo S80 and XC60.

As a result, the Freelander 2 received more powerful and capable engines. And also a ground clearance of 210 mm, a modified Terrain Response system, like the Discovery 3 and Range Rover, and, accordingly, better cross-country ability. The quality of finishing and equipment has reached a new level. The model, also sold in the US under the name LR2, has become even safer, earning the maximum "5 stars" in European crash tests. During production at a plant in Halwood, UK, near Liverpool, Freelander 2 was updated twice: in 2010 and in 2012.

For the first time, the crossover received a modernized 2.2 turbodiesel, which, instead of 160 forces, developed 150 and 190 "horses" depending on the settings. Also, the 2010 restyling brought the car revised interior trim materials. The second time - two years later - Freelander corrected the shape of the bumpers, the radiator grille, the design of the rims and added LEDs to the optics. And also other finishing materials and redrawn the front panel with the center console. The main innovation was the 2-liter EcoBoost turbo four instead of the 3.2. In this form, the car was produced for a couple of years - until 2014.

"Resale"

With five engine variations and two gearboxes, the Freelander 2 does not provide its customers with any tangible variety in the aftermarket. After all, three quarters of all sold crossovers of this used model are versions with a 2.2 turbodiesel ( 84% ) and automaton ( 88% ). Cars with a 3.2 petrol "six", available on the model from the very beginning, are a rarity ( 12% ), and with the new gasoline "turbo four" 2.0 from the last restyling, there is a shortage ( 4% ). The manual transmission on this car is also not popular ( 12% ). And it is found only in tandem with a diesel engine on cars until 2012.

Body conscientiously

Good double-sided galvanic treatment of the metal body of the Freelander 2 protects it from corrosion for a long time. But, alas, not completely. Small spots of rust can still appear with age on the rear fenders, in the area of the wheel arches and on the tailgate. Even if the car has not been involved in an accident in the past. And also corrosion occurs in parts of the body that are hidden from prying eyes. For example, at the joints of the front fenders and the bumper. True, to see this, the latter must be dismantled.

The appearance of an aged "Friel" can be spoiled by the peeling coating of the radiator grille and linings on the front fenders for 7300 rubles, as well as above the license plate on the tailgate. From moisture and dirt in this model for several years, the rear wiper electric motor, which costs 12,400 rubles, and the button for unlocking the tailgate for 2900 rubles, "die". And the same fate awaits door locks with age. When inspecting the car, make sure that the headliner and trunk floor are dry. Cases of a sunroof leak and an additional brake light are not uncommon.

Three motors - five options

Initially, the Freelander 2 was equipped with a 233-horsepower "Volvo" atmospheric inline-six 3.2 (i6) and a 160-horsepower 2.2 turbodiesel (DW12) jointly developed by Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen. The first is considered one of the most successful power units of the Swedish brand. She has a timing chain for 8,700 rubles, which stretches to 250,000 km. For those who like to drive on an almost empty tank, due to the lack of cooling with gasoline in the summer, a submersible fuel pump for 31,000 rubles can "die". Traces of oil drips on this engine often appear due to the short-lived oil separator of the crankcase ventilation system in the valve cover for 7,700 rubles.

But the second - diesel - at first turned out to be capricious and not very reliable. At least until 2008, when the company cured many of his "childhood illnesses" like short-lived fuel injectors for at least 22,000 rubles and a fuel injection pump that rarely lives up to 80,000 km for 40,000 rubles. Also, the owners were troubled by the timing belt tearing up to 130,000 km from 5,000 rubles for an unoriginal and weak camshaft of a high-pressure fuel pump. In more recent versions of this turbodiesel with a capacity of 150 and 190 forces, released in 2010 after the first restyling, the intercooler for 12,500 rubles and its pipes, as well as a cooling radiator for 26,200 rubles, do not differ in durability and tightness. The former is enough for about 70,000 km, while the latter can last twice as long.

The oil in a diesel engine must be changed after 13,000 km, and the candles last up to 80,000 km. The turbine for 58,800 rubles is tenacious and regularly blows at least up to 200,000 km. But only in the less powerful diesel version. The "Ford" 2-liter 240-horsepower "turbo four" (Si4), which replaced the "six" in 2012, cannot boast of problem-free performance, alas, it cannot. There are known cases of burnout of valves on this motor, as well as destruction of partitions between the rings. First of all, the piston group suffers from fans of dynamic driving. Land Rover solved the problem by replacing the software. Tripping, knocking when you press the gas, blue or gray smoke from the exhaust pipe, as well as a burning Check Engine lamp on the tidy will tell you about a malfunction of the "turbo four".

Transmission

The Getrag Ford M66 6-speed mechanic, which is rarely found on Freelander, should not be feared. It is quite reliable and will only concern the owner of the crossover by replacing the clutch for 19,200 rubles with a frequency of 50,000 km. The most common Aisin Warner AWF21 assault rifle on this model with the same number of steps bothered only on early cars produced before 2008. Due to slipping and jerking, such boxes were changed under warranty. For the rest, this transmission is durable and without problems before the first large-scale repair it can go about 250,000 km. The main thing is to regularly change the oil in it at least 60,000 km.

One of the unpleasant qualities of the Friel transmission is the hum in the rear of the passenger compartment while driving. At first, dealers treated the problem by replacing the rear final drive, and on later machines, updating its bearings. After 150,000 km, the crossover can crunch and creak the angular transmission of the front gearbox. Around the same time, a cardan shaft from 59,600 rubles will inform the owner of the desire to retire by vibrations. It is important not to miss and replace the drive oil seals that have begun to snot in time.

In addition to changing the oil and filter every 50,000 km, the multi-plate rear wheel drive clutch up to a mileage of about 150,000 km can only disturb the failure of its oil pump for 33,500 rubles and electronic "brains" for 49,900 rubles. The latter, like the gearbox, as well as other transmission units, require cleaning and drying after driving off the asphalt into the mud and overcoming small fords. This will protect them from overheating and premature wear.

Rest

The "Friel" suspension is characterized by servicemen and owners of this crossover as reliable. Up to 120,000 km, when buzzing wheel bearings of 12,400 rubles each with a hub may be asked for replacement, the chassis worried only the owners of the cars of the first two years of production. For 35,000 km, they worn out steering tips at 2,100 rubles and stabilizer struts at 1,850 rubles, and by 70,000 km, the thrust bearings of the front struts at 2,150 rubles. Also, sometimes you have to visit the service because of the knocking of the steering rack.

Front shock absorbers for 6,600 rubles and rear for 10,200 rubles on the Freelander 2 go about 150,000 km. For the same run, you may have to change the humming power steering pump for 27,200 rubles. By about 180,000 km, silent blocks from 3400 rubles and ball joints at 1300 rubles will work out their resource. Original brake pads for 4,200 rubles are enough for a SUV for about 50,000 km, and brake discs for 3,700 rubles - up to 140,000 km.

How much?

Finding a Freelander 2 on the secondary market is not cheap. The very first pre-styling cars aged 11-12 years with a mileage of 200,000 km cost no less than 500,000 rubles, regardless of the type of engine and gearbox. For 7-8-year-old crossovers released after the first update with a modernized diesel engine and mileage up to 100,000 - 150,000 km, their owners ask for at least 700,000 rubles. Prices for "Freelander 2" of the second restyling start at 1,000,000 rubles. The most recent 3-4-year-old copies of the model, officially sold in our country and running along Russian roads for about 30,000 km, cost around 1,500,000 rubles.

Our choice

According to the Am.ru editorial board, the junior "rogue" from the Land Rover family, the Freelander 2, is a good buy, which, provided that a "live" and well-groomed specimen is selected, will delight its owner with comfort, quality and reliability for a long time to come. The best option would be an updated 150-horsepower diesel crossover no older than 2010. Such a car with a mileage of less than 150,000 km can be found from 800,000 rubles. An interesting, more dynamic, but also more voracious option can be a SUV with a top-end gasoline "six" no older than 2008, which costs about 600,000 - 750,000 rubles.

The start of production of the second generation Land Rover Freelander dates back to 2006. It is noteworthy that this model is not a global reworking of its predecessor, but is based on a completely new platform with an increased wheelbase, which made it possible to remove the main weaknesses of the previous generation. The second generation is noticeably larger than the previous one, and short overhangs and a fairly high ground clearance have further improved its off-road characteristics. At the same time, the suspension travel and torsional rigidity of the body were increased, the front and rear subframes were isolated due to the use of special rubber mounts, and large-diameter gas-filled shock absorbers allow passing almost any obstacle on the way without any problems, while maintaining the proper level of comfort. Unlike its "ancestor", the new generation of "Freelander" was produced exclusively in the format of a five-door SUV, and the overall design was made in a completely new style, previously uncharacteristic of the company. Even at the initial stages of the development of the car, the official representatives of the auto giant announced that the new generation will be an order of magnitude more reliable than the previous one, because special attention will be paid to the build quality. I must say that they kept their promise and the car turned out to be much more successful than the last one. But nothing is perfect, so even the crown of the creation of Land Rover engineers has its own advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed below.

The main disadvantages of the Land Rover Freelander 2006–2014. release

  • Automatic gearbox;
  • Rear axle reducer;
  • Silent blocks;
  • Radiator package;
  • Electrician;
  • Established parking sensors;
  • Suspended bearings;
  • Glow plugs;
  • Established webasto;

Let's consider them in more detail:

Automatic transmission.

On versions with a diesel engine, with frequent operation at low temperatures, a disease often manifests itself, the essence of which is the premature failure of the torque converter and the internal mechanisms of the box itself due to the strong thickening of the oil recommended by the manufacturer. Only the use of a more liquid oil will help to correct a factory defect.

Rear axle reducer.

With a mileage of 100 thousand or more, as well as with frequent off-road trips, on many Land Rover Freelander owners begin to hear a strong hum from the rear gearbox. In this situation, there can be two possible reasons for the unpleasant sound: the speedy "death" of the gearbox, or wear of the shank bearing. If in the first case the owner is doomed to rather expensive repairs, then replacing the shank bearing will cost you only a few thousand rubles.

Silent blocks.

The next vulnerability most often manifests itself at temperatures below -25 Celsius and consists in a strong creak and rapid destruction of the silent blocks of both the front and rear levers. The installation of polyurethane silent blocks will help to fix the factory defects. Of course, if you can find them.

Radiator package.

On all 2nd generation Land Rover Freelander models, operation problems include severe mud clogging of the radiator package. If you do not rinse them properly at least once a year, then problems with the operation of the cooling system, intercooler and air conditioning are guaranteed to you.

As for the electrics, in the car in question it will not be possible to specifically identify its weaknesses, because different owners have different problems in the operation of electronic systems. For some, for example, the bulbs of the front and rear optics constantly burn out, for others, the failure of the ABS system is a frequent breakdown, and for others there are problems with the dashboard. Only one thing can be said for sure - if you want to buy yourself a Freelander, then sooner or later you will certainly encounter "glitches" in the operation of this or that system.

Established parking sensors.

Due to the design features of the car, its rear bumper constantly throws mud at the very place where the sensors of the parking sensors are located, causing either interruptions in operation or a complete failure of the entire system. This weakness is aggravated by the fact that these sensors themselves are very sensitive to the slightest dirt, so if you want to park with the help of parking sensors, wipe them down constantly.

Suspended bearings.

On versions with powerful gasoline engines of 2.0 and 3.2 liters, a frequent breakdown is the rapid failure of the cardan outboard bearings. This problem was caused by factory miscalculations, as a result of which insufficiently powerful bearings were installed on these versions of the machines, capable of withstanding high torque and high revolutions. Fortunately, the cost of replacing bearings is low, and finding them in stores in more or less large cities is not a big problem.

Glow plugs.

Diesel engines themselves are quite demanding on the quality of fuel, but they can still forgive the owner for using not the most expensive fuel. It is a pity, but this does not apply to glow plugs, which can fail at the first attempt to fill in a slightly lower quality diesel fuel. Also, even when using good fuel, in freezing temperatures below -30 degrees, they may simply not turn on, making it impossible to start the engine.

Established webasto.

The standard Webasto is also very demanding on the quality of fuel. Moreover, its requirements are no less than the requirements of the engine itself. If you often use low-quality fuel, you may not even hope for the correct operation of this unit, and this can cause big trouble, especially in the conditions of our harsh winters.

Plastic sills and doors.

Due to the design features of the car, plastic door sills and doors often break off. The problem is mainly caused by the fact that the system of attaching these elements to the body is not well thought out and is a few small, and far from the best quality caps.

Weaknesses of the 2nd generation Land Rover Freelander

  1. Long warm-up of the engine and its rapid cooling;
  2. Insufficiently efficient operation of the stove, which is why the car interior takes a very long time to warm up;
  3. It is very difficult to change the oil filter on diesel versions due to its location;
  4. Difficulty finding services for troubleshooting;
  5. High cost of spare parts and repair work;
  6. Low liquidity in the secondary market, which causes big problems when selling;
  7. The fabric of the chairs is prone to dirt that is very difficult to remove;
  8. Strong vibrations and extraneous noise during diesel engine operation at negative temperatures.

Conclusion.

Compared to the first generation of the model, the designers of Land Rover have made great strides forward in the production of expensive SUVs. The second generation became noticeably more beautiful and more reliable than the previous one, which had a positive impact on the overall brand image. But, even the incredible desire of the company to give people a truly high-quality product was not crowned with success, and the car did not turn out to be ideal in every sense. Yes, she is good, but she is still far from perfect. Land Rover Freelander 2, like other cars, has its pros and cons, and only you can decide for yourself what is more in it, just sitting behind the wheel.
