Of course, in absolute terms this doesn’t look too cool: we’re not even talking about thousands, but hundreds of sales, and before receiving test car I have not met anyone like him on the roads. But what is the status! Moreover, I have in my hands the most powerful and complete version, and therefore getting to know it should be even more pleasant.

Well, besides the fact that you drive a cool (or not so cool) car for a month... Because during this month you have time to get used to the car and, if necessary, adapt to it. Study all its nodules and cracks and understand which ones really stress you out and which ones don’t.” Can not argue.

The best test format: you use a new (and generally new, and for yourself) car for a long time, slowly sorting out your impressions. What is really good, what is not really good, and what is not at all. Let me start with the good.

It feels like they forgot to tell several Citroen designers that DS is now a separate brand, and they are still drawing on two fronts, so to speak. Because updated sedan C4 is a car with style. Yes, in the segment of flashy Asians and respectable Europeans this is more of a requirement than a super bonus, and yet Citro is actually not bad. Generous strokes of chrome look good against the background of a cold body color (there are no warm ones in the range), and the space “mask” on the face is both futuristic and elegant.

If I were the owner of a pre-restyling sedan, I would definitely envy the huge fancy headlights and rear optics with real LED 3D graphics. It just looks awesome! And if you don’t skimp when choosing a package, you’ll also get cool 17-inch wheels. It's no wonder that with all these goodies, the four-door C4 quickly acquired a funny nickname: Le Sedan.

The front optics can also be fully LED, which makes them even prettier, but this option is available only for the most expensive version of the sedan - 150-horsepower with the Shine Ultimate package. The light is not adaptive, but quite powerful and certainly better than the only alternative in the form of halogens.

The salon is a success. At first, the finishing materials are not at all impressive: delicate leather on the steering wheel, high-quality fabric in the central part of the seats, soft upper part of the front panel. And don't get me wrong, but the large lever of the new six-speed automatic C4 (we'll get to that later) feels good in the hand. And what big and soft chairs! The comfortable seats in the front and the rear sofa with a good angle of inclination and a long cushion deserve delight. Over time, you notice other important things like chrome marks on the steering column switches. What do you say is a small thing? No matter how it is - this is the difference quality interior from cheap, where they saved on everything that seems to be invisible.

High-quality chairs come with wide (that’s right!) possibilities for adjusting them. Let them be manual and without luxury like the rising edge of a pillow, but with large ranges. The steering wheel also moves where it should. In short, your comfort is guaranteed.

Speaking of comfort, or rather, the feeling on the move: I like the suspension of the updated C4. From Efim Repin’s test drive, I learned that the top sedan with different shock absorbers and springs is the stiffest option, which seems to lack the energy intensity of the suspension, which is so pleasing on the diesel version. Indeed, in combination with elegant 17 wheels, small details of the road often reach the fifth point, and large ones even make you worry about the integrity of low-profile tires. But for my personal taste, “tight European tuning” and moderate roll are still good. The noisy operation of the front suspension is a little disappointing, but this can probably be attributed to the condition of the test car.

A tight ride sets you up for the driver's driving mode, however steering Nobody taught C4 this. Behind the unjustified weight of the steering wheel there is... nothing. In addition to the unreasonably powerful restoring force without feedback. And in terms of sharpness, the steering is hardly superior to fruit cake.

The new six-speed Aisin automatic transmission paired with accelerator settings also dictates a not-too-racing format for the ride. The box operates smoothly and predictably in quiet mode, which is actually not bad by modern torque converter standards. But, firstly, this is still not a lightning-fast “robot” (yes, yes, like a DSG - argue about the resource as much as you want, but almost nothing in this world works as well). That is, downshifts are, so to speak, reluctant. Secondly, the gas pedal can be pressed to the floor even before you decide which way to turn out of the “standing” lane - the transmission takes so long to digest the driver’s cries of despair.

However, next to the solid automatic lever there are two special buttons for turning on the sports and winter modes. The first forces the box to select lower gears and hold them longer (but this doesn’t make it any more “sporty”), while the other, on the contrary, will start from second and shift up at every opportunity.

But the turbo engine unconditionally pleases. The familiar 1.6-liter engine joint development PSA and BMW issue 150 Horse power and 240 Nm of torque. Moreover, the character of the French-German “four” unexpectedly reminded me of the engine of one venerable “Swede” with aviation habits, who was once in my hands. Saab engineers at one time firmly believed in the power of turbocharging and at the same time in the need for traction “from below”. I don’t know which one of the developers of the top-end C4 engine read the same mantras, but the prank was definitely a success for him - the engine produces all the “newtons” already from 1400 rpm and does not really like to spin beyond four thousand. I can say with confidence that it is convenient, because almost all possible traction is always nearby. On the other hand, this is again not about drive. If you don’t want to upset the street racer in you, don’t push the turbo-four into the right zone of the tachometer. There is nothing special there except terrible noise.

In 2016 French sedan The Citroen C4 has undergone a restyling, however, contrary to expectations, the matter was not limited to a banal “facelift” - the update also affected technical stuffing. Thanks to modernization, the model has become more attractive, comfortable and dynamic, and to be more precise, the new product is significantly better than its predecessor. In the current conditions of the Russian car market, it is, of course, unlikely to be able to “push” Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio or Volkswagen Polo, and become a bestseller, but still those who know a lot about cars will certainly appreciate it. Design

Due to the double chevrons stretched across the entire front part of the body, as well as other headlights with LED DRLs and an enlarged bumper, the 2016 C4 boasts a relevant and modern, and most importantly, recognizable appearance. Now you can’t recognize it as a sedan French brand Citroen is simply impossible. Some people probably won’t like such a radical selection of only one part of the car, but from now on the design of the “Tse-four” is truly unique. The taillights have changed to a lesser extent, having received instead old filling a newfangled LED one, and in addition, they purchased a “3D” console. Due to the installation of new bumpers, the length of the four-door increased by 23 mm - to 4.644 m. Design

The foundation of the 2016 C4 sedan is the PF2 chassis (MacPherson struts + torsion beam), which also underlies the current C4 hatchback, the previous generation Tse-four and some Peugeot cars. When developing the restyled model, the emphasis was on ease of control, and therefore the suspension turned out to be soft, but the 150-horsepower modification has a stiffer design compared to the less powerful versions, what should be taken into account when purchasing. In addition, you need to take into account that the power steering of the updated four-door is the same as that of the hatchback, but with a different control program.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Having been originally created for China, today the C4 is well prepared for use in Russia. To conquer our roads, it has a 176 mm ground clearance (almost like Lada Vesta), metal crankcase protection, reinforced starter and battery for winter starting, as well as three-stage heating of the front seats. Along with this, the new sedan has heated exterior mirrors, washer nozzles and the entire surface windshield.

Comfort

Despite compact dimensions models, the interior is quite spacious. Getting inside is as easy as shelling pears, unless we are talking about passengers of a heavy build, since the width of the doorways is clearly intended for people of standard build. The rear sofa, equipped with a folding backrest and soft headrests, has enough space for 2-3 adults. The front seats are not very comfortable due to insufficient lateral support, lack of lumbar support and short pillows. At the same time, the driver's seat has a height adjustment function, and steering column It is adjustable in height and reach, which allows you to tailor the driver’s seat well to suit you.


Leather steering wheel with audio system control buttons is available in all trim levels except the basic one. The steering wheel is large and thin, “not for everyone.” The interior decoration as a whole is fabric or combined, and a full leather interior is a privilege of the Chinese version of the C4. The instrument panel, made in the form of three “wells”, unfortunately, is blocked by a third by the left hand on the steering wheel. In the top version, each “well” has a silver edging. Innovations in the interior include the absence of a scattering of media system control buttons and the fact that the automatic transmission lever now runs along a straight path rather than along a curved groove. Under the multimedia complex there is a climate control unit with three “washers” (in the “base” there is a regular air conditioner), and above it hang elegant ventilation deflectors with a silver frame. Other amenities include: refrigerated glove box, an ashtray with a cigarette lighter, a front 12-volt socket, pockets in the backs of the first row seats for storing small items and a USB input for mobile devices.


Considering that the C4 sedan has not yet been tested by the European organization EuroNCAP, when assessing its safety level it is worth focusing on the hatchback of the same name. In 2010, the C4 hatch earned 5 stars in Euro NCAP tests, and here are its indicators: adult protection - 90%, child care - 85%, electronic assistants - 97%, pedestrian protection - 43%. If we talk about individual tests, then head-on collision with a moderate overlap, the hatchback was awarded 15.2 points out of 16, and it managed to withstand an impact with a cart perfectly (7.8 points out of 8 possible), coped poorly with an impact with a pole (6.5 points) and demonstrated a low level of protection upon impact behind.


In the initial version, the four-door is equipped with an ordinary radio with six speakers. In more expensive trim levels, a CD/MP3 audio system with Bluetooth, a tuner with RDS function and AUX/USB connectors is available (this is an additional option for the basic version). The most expensive trim levels are offered with an “advanced” multimedia complex - with a seven-inch TouchDrive color touchscreen, control buttons on the steering wheel, MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay functions for visualizing Apple or Android content, as well as a camera rear view. The TouchDrive navigation system is only in the “top”.

The 2016 C4 engine range includes two 1.6-liter petrol fours. - naturally aspirated VTi, which produces 115 hp. and 150 Nm, and supercharged THP, developing 150 hp. and 240 Nm. The Citroen C4 sedan has been presented in Russia since 2013. In 2016, the Russian office of Citroen announced the start of sales updated version sedan. The model is assembled at own factory PSA concern in Kaluga with a localization level of 35%. From motor line the rather problematic and maintenance-demanding 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated engine with a capacity of 120 horsepower was excluded and, on the contrary, added diesel unit DV6C (114 hp), which was previously offered for the hatchback (sales of the five-door version were discontinued in 2015). Now, in all versions of the sedan with an automatic transmission, a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission is installed, and it can even be ordered in tandem with the “old man” TU5 with a power of 116 horsepower, for which the control unit had to be modified, ensuring smooth traction and acceptable acceleration dynamics.


The range of trim levels for the restyled Citroen C4 sedan has been radically revised. The basic version is called Live and includes: a steering wheel with height and reach adjustment, side mirrors with electric drive and heating, LED DRLs, rear seat folding in the ratio of 1/3-2/3, driver's seat height adjustment, fabric interior trim. Also in the database: lightly tinted side windows, front and rear electric windows with anti-clamping function; air conditioning and refrigerated glove compartment; audio preparation (antenna and 6 speakers). The Shine version will add to this alloy wheels, rear led lights, footlights for front passengers, 7-inch color touch screen TouchDrive, combined interior trim. The top-end Shine Ultimate package includes LED headlights, 17" alloy wheels, navigation system, more comfort and safety features.

After restyling, the petrol engines of the Citroen C4 sedan are represented by the base TU5JP4 engine (116 hp) and the EP6DT turbo engine (150 hp). The first is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a modern 6-speed Aisin automatic, which differs increased speed switching. Acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h for both modifications is 10.9 seconds and 12.5 seconds, respectively. At the same time, the 6-speed automatic allows for additional fuel savings - average consumption it is 6.6 l/100 km, which is slightly less than that of the manual version, where the same figure reaches 7.1 l/100 km. The turbo engine is equipped only with an automatic transmission and accelerates the sedan to “hundreds” in just 8.1 seconds, with an average consumption of 6.5 l/100 km. In the diesel version with a 5-speed manual transmission, the acceleration dynamics look much more modest - 11.4 seconds to 100 km/h. But diesel fuel consumption is only 4.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

All modifications of the Citroen C4 are front-wheel drive. The front suspension of the sedan is independent MacPherson strut with stabilizer, the rear suspension is semi-independent, spring. The car has disc brakes (ventilated in front). The dimensions of the sedan are as follows: length - 4621 mm, width - 1789 mm, height - 1496 mm. Compared to the hatchback, the Citroen C4 sedan has a larger wheelbase(2708 mm versus 2608 mm), the longest in segment C, to which the car belongs. Exterior

The side of the new Citroen C4 2017 sedan looks somewhat unusual compared to most models. Although the company’s designers have such a “trick” - a seemingly excessively long hood against the backdrop of a rather short trunk.

What is striking is the small size of the wheels, the A-pillar that goes low into the “muzzle”, the impressive relief of the rear wheel arch and the more modest front one, as well as the stamping on the front fender and the door, at the bottom of the doors.

The back of the Citroen C4 sedan 2017 in the new body looks nice, but not as interesting and unusual as the front and side. It is difficult to determine the identity of the design by looking at the stern - both European and Asian features are visible in it.

The rear sofa has the same level of comfort, and if we talk about spaciousness, then the seats are back to back. For large people, the interior, as well as access to/from it, will not be convenient.

Just three years ago, when there was no sign of a crisis, few people dared to give a forecast for a model that was initially released on the Chinese market, and later adapted for production and operation in Russia. Many virtues in the form of a ground clearance of 176 mm, a huge wheelbase for a C-class of 2,708 mm and, accordingly, spaciousness in the cabin, as well as a low price for those times, were not enough.

Competitors benefited from more modern engines and transmissions, as well as equipment…. The lesson was learned, and unlike many automakers who turn restyling into a cosmetic procedure, Citroen decided to take radical measures. Thanks to double chevrons stretched across the entire face, new front optics against the backdrop of an overgrown bumper and the obligatory DRL LEDs, the updated sedan cannot be confused with anything else. Some people may not like such a radical emphasis on only one part of the body, but in my opinion, it was thanks to it that the car, very conventionally associated with a truly French product, acquired its own style.

They invested less in the rear optics. While the configuration remained unchanged, the filling was shaken up, replacing it with a newfangled one with LEDs. The 3-D console, of course, will increase the status and significance of innovations, but for an inexperienced buyer. However, so be it. The lanterns look really beautiful and are perfectly visible both during the day and at night.

If you omit new design light alloy rims, which only notorious aesthetes pay attention to - the issue with the exterior can be closed... As well as with the interior, in which no visible changes can be found. However, Citroen representatives convinced me that the C4 Sedan is a very interesting book, the new edition of which is worthy of detailed study.

Even the memory of the 120-horsepower Prince gasoline engine and the antediluvian AL4 four-speed automatic transmission was burned out of it with a hot iron. The role of the base engine is completely given to the older and more reliable naturally aspirated 1.6 TU5 series, and it is available both with a manual transmission and with an updated six-speed automatic transmission. On the higher steps there is a 150-horsepower Prince turbo version (also with a six-speed automatic transmission), as well as a diesel engine with a six-speed manual transmission. The 1.6-liter 114-horsepower HDi, familiar from the Peugeot 408, is as simple and unpretentious in operation as possible for modern diesels. Many people are unaware that it has eight valves. But this simplicity, with environmental standard Euro-5, which has not been forgotten, eliminates additional costs. Urea for exhaust cleaning? Forget it!

On the move, such a car turned out to be playful, although a little noisy and with noticeable vibrations. The gearbox is short-throw, with excellent selectivity - the likelihood of missing gears, even for a beginner, is minimized. But it's not only that. Alas, a turbodiesel in a car of this class is always a compromise, and the presence of an “automatic” will push the price beyond the limits of consumer demand. If the pages of our “book” with a turbodiesel and six-speed manual transmission left the most positive impressions, then the more familiar ones, dedicated to the already known 150-horsepower engine with a new six-speed automatic transmission, did not evoke such an unambiguous perception. Firstly, there is little trust in the turbocharged “straight” Prince: in operation, the engine showed an oily appetite and was annoying with breakdowns of fuel equipment. It seems like they have worked on reliability, but “a residue remains.” Secondly, I liked the “gasoline” suspension setup, which differs from the “diesel” one, especially in combination with 17-inch wheels, much less in the pits. This shortcoming was greatly manifested on Chuvash peripheral roads that were far from ideal.


Well, but with a powerful gasoline engine offered maximum configuration: Rear View Camera, multimedia system with a seven-inch Touchdrive screen, complemented by Carplay and Mirror Link software for visualizing the contents of Apples and Androids, push-button engine start and keyless access to the car - all this is great.

And the dynamics of such a car are not bad, the engine does not roar even beyond 3,000 rpm, gears shift smoothly and quickly both up and down. But from a turbocharged engine with such power, you expect more, if not in numbers, but in sensations.

Here it is worth saying a few words about the box. The French call it the “new EAT6”, but in fact it is still the same Aisin Warner TF70SC, released by the Japanese in 2009 specifically for PSA models. This is a “relative” of the famous TF80SC, which stood on several dozen modern models from Alfa Romeo 159 to Volvo S80.

What is the essence of the update? It is not disclosed in all details, talking only about the transition to a less viscous oil, updated software and clutches. As a result, we get reduced consumption and better dynamics. The improvements, in principle, are quite in the spirit of the times - friction losses are reduced and torque converter locking is tightened. Well, I liked the result in action, the main thing is not to forget to change the oil more often, preferably at every second service.

The last, slightly edited pages of the “book”, which had acquired a catchy cover, had to be opened with some caution. What impressions will a 116-horsepower naturally aspirated engine with the same updated six-speed transmission make? It's no secret that base motors, moreover, with an automatic transmission, for the most part are weak and dull, like the current weather with endless, drizzling rain. Surprisingly, I was proven wrong. The well-deserved naturally aspirated TU5, which was not put to waste by someone’s strong-willed decision, is extremely obedient, fortunately the control unit has been modified. It was not presented in combination with the old five-speed manual transmission, but also for automatic transmission The characteristics of the motor turned out to be sufficient. Moreover, it is hardly much worse than the top-end “turbo Prince”, and certainly much more reliable.



Naturally, there is no talk of any “sport”, but the traction is smooth, almost throughout the entire rev range, and even on the verge of the cutoff, the engine tries to gain a few extra kilometers per hour. He copes with the basic discipline of “overclocking” like a solid master. At least better than similar motors from many famous manufacturers. Overtaking at 80 km/h is also not scary. The automatic transmission quickly pushes down a lower gear (the shift speed, according to the engineers, has been increased by 40%), and if you need a special jerk, you push through the kick-down step, and here it is... But it’s better not to take the engine to extremes, that’s not what it’s for. But in normal modes, this version of the C4 sedan is the most comfortable.


The basic suspension in combination with 16-inch tires turned out to be the most balanced, if not “puncture-proof”, and not “oaky”. And on all types of available coverage. From licked asphalt to a muddy country road with a rut that few competitors in the C-class would dare to venture onto. Of course, a sedan is not an SUV, but the one mentioned ground clearance 176 mm is not out of place for him in Russian conditions, and one can only applaud the innovation in the form of a steel crankcase protection.


To a new standard

All of the above is perhaps the necessary minimum that is worth knowing and taking into account when buying this car. Other innovations, including air conditioning in the base, heated windshield in more expensive versions, Hill Assist systems for assistance when starting uphill and monitoring “blind spots”, LED headlights, which, alas, do not have washers and in dirty weather they will have to be constantly wiped, as well as many other little things, of course, are important. But they, by and large, influence the main purpose of the car - to drive without causing trouble to the driver and passengers - to a much lesser extent than engines, gearboxes and suspensions.


By the way, you will have to forget about the old configurations. There are five of them in the new line: Live, Feel, Feel+, Shine and Shine Ultimate. Prices for them will be announced a little later, but for now we can only be content technical information, impressions from the test drive and the realization that with restyling the car not only won, but also did not waste the existing positive aspects.
