According to preliminary calculations, the minimum price for diesel and petrol model may fluctuate between 3,100,000 – 3,150,000 rubles. It is not known whether domestic dealers will make any markup on the car and increase its already considerable cost.

Sami Russian car dealers have already announced the sale of this model, but do not indicate exact prices. The Volkswagen line of cars has been replenished with a new flagship model – the 2017-2018 Volkswagen Arteon liftback. The new product will take its place at the top model range manufacturer, displacing the Passat CC from there and positioning itself a step higher than usual. True, the new Arteon will fulfill the role of the eldest only for the time being, until Phaeton’s successor is released. There are already two larger representatives of the Volkswagen brand on the Chinese market - Magotan and Phideon.

The premiere show of the new German fastback will take place as part of Geneva Motor Show 2017. Immediately after the end of the forum, orders for the model will begin, and entry into the home market is planned for June. According to preliminary estimates Volkswagen price Arteon will be around 35-38 thousand euros. It’s gratifying that the appearance of a new product in Russia is also on the company’s agenda, but in the most optimistic scenario the car will reach us no earlier than the end of this year, and in the worst case scenario – only in 2018.

Body dimensions and appearance

It is not difficult to guess that the R-Line version has more pronounced notes of sportiness, which are reflected, among other things, in the configuration of the front fairing. It is equipped with one central and two side sections of air intakes, decorated in gloss black. The Elegance car is primarily aimed at rich equipment, hence the more relaxed bumper design with a cutout that spans the entire width of the car.

The profile of the Volkswagen Arteon has the characteristic contours of a coupe, formed by a long hood, a domed roof and a solid rear end. The sides of the body are decorated with frameless side glazing with a thin chrome outline, an original rib along the entire length of the body, a powerful shoulder girdle, “pumped up” rear fenders, and ideally outlined radii wheel arches. It is not without reason that psychologists advise not to paint overly optimistic pictures in anticipation of something new. A person is happy when he receives more than he expects. And it breaks off in the reverse situation. Arteon’s trouble is precisely that even people who know the secret of happiness find it hard not to want something special from him. He is a hostage to his stunning appearance and status as a flagship European model.

The first disappointment comes in the cabin. Not counting the new one multimedia system Discover Pro with a 9.2‑inch touchscreen and gesture sensor, Arteon is the same “eighth” Passat.

The crisis and all-consuming savings are powerful excuses not to paint the interior from scratch. But, damn it, there is absolutely not one here characteristic detail, not a single bright stroke! Remember the Scirocco's interior door handles, which distinguished its interior from the Golf's? I expected about the same from Arteon. As it turned out, it was in vain.

I'm sad to say this, but right now I'm digging Arteon's grave with my own hands. I'll unpack the shovel, at least. The issue of supplies to our country has been preliminary resolved positively. But the Germans say that they listen carefully to the opinions of authoritative publications and that any stone thrown into Arteon’s garden reduces the chances of its entry into the Russian market.

If everything goes according to plan and the press does not tear the Arteon to smithereens, Russians will be able to admire it already in 2018.

Basic Russian versions you will get a 150-horsepower two-liter diesel engine. Petrol two-liter modifications with outputs of 190 and 280 hp will also be available. (the second is exclusively with all-wheel drive).

Subtle matter

Now let's briefly return to the essence and clarify one important issue. What kind of animal is Arteon? Where did it come from and what place does it occupy in the Volkswagen model hierarchy?

Let's move a little over two years ago under the roof. It was there that in March 2015 the covers were pulled off the beautiful prototype Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE. And there Klaus Bischoff let it slip that in Wolfsburg the designers did not do this project “on the table”. Except that the production fastback was not destined to become a hybrid. That's how it all turned out.

The production Arteon debuted there, in Geneva, 24 months later. And although its appearance turned out to be a little calmer than that of the concept car, it looks damn bold.

The name Arteon consists of two parts. Art refers to art, eon (era) gives rise to associations with. As for the size and positioning... The Arteon is 95 mm longer and 39 mm wider than the Passat. Actually, they position the fastback just above the popular D-class sedan. In fact, the Arteon is a slightly “swollen” but very stylish replacement Passat sedan CC.

I press the Start/Stop button at the base of the tunnel and wake up the top-of-the-line inline-four with 280 hp. and 350 Nm. With this engine, the Arteon hits the first hundred in 5.6 seconds. Less than a second and a half supercar!

I agree, the choice is ambiguous. But what if at the European presentation this version was the only relevant one? Russian market? There was neither a basic 150-horsepower diesel engine nor our potentially most popular 190-horsepower diesel in Hannover. gasoline engine 2.0 TSI.

The optional double glazing in the front doors is great. And it’s equally great that the doors are still frameless. Refined aesthetic buzz! The Arteon is so quiet that at city speeds you can barely hear the engine, the rustle of the tires, or even the wind. But the very first speed bump, passed at walking speed, instantly sobers you up. Of course, the car looks amazing on 245/35 R20 tires, but even on well-maintained German roads

The fastback on the “duct tape” is very hard. Regardless of the settings of the electronically controlled shock absorbers, Volkswagen is hostile to speed bumps and treats them with unpleasant pokes at the joints of concrete slabs. I have no doubt that on base tires of size 225/55 R17 or 245/45 R18 the smoothness of the ride is better, but I didn’t have such cars at my disposal. Adaptive suspension

In all other respects, Arteon is the same. Not even that: from the point of view of driving habits, the Arteon is any Volkswagen from Golf and above. A moderately informative steering wheel, lightning-fast “break-free” shifts of a 7-speed “wet” DSG robot (wet clutches on all versions), adjusted pedal efforts... But even with the top-end 280-horsepower engine, the Arteon drives just well: just fast, easy quiet and simply reliable. All you have to do is concentrate on the corporate steering wheel and the Passat front panel - and suddenly you forget that you are driving a car that passers-by and passers-by are looking at.

Money is not the main thing

That evening for dinner we had chicken soup from a local Chinese restaurant. This stew looked bad: probably something similar happens when you decide to heat jellied meat in the microwave. The irony is that the dish tasted simply divine. And this dinner once again prompted the idea of ​​a discrepancy between content and form. Both soup and Arteon promise one thing, but deliver something completely different. Except that the noodles looked unsightly, but new Volkswagen It drives, albeit without a spark, but well. His only problem is that he looks prohibitively cool.

In addition to the top-end gasoline version, out of curiosity, I drove fifty kilometers on the 240-horsepower diesel Arteon. There will be no such machines in Russia, but there is something useful in my observations. Firstly, the diesel engine is quiet. Not as much as the one, in which there are no rattles and vibrations in principle, but quiet enough so that the driver does not feel like a tractor driver. Secondly, thanks to the impressive torque, at low and medium speeds the difference in dynamics with the top-end petrol version does not seem scary. Therefore, I think that even the base 150-horsepower Arteon will perform adequately. All that remains is to wait for Russian sales.

If after reading this you have a negative opinion about the car, know: I didn’t mean to. Arteon is cool! It will be a damn shame if Wolfsburg suddenly changes their minds and you and I don’t get to admire it on our native streets. Its active cruise control is one of the most advanced in the industry; The lane keeping assistant is even better than the vaunted one. Yes, and places on rear seats- almost like in . And all because wheelbase Arteon is smaller by some half a centimeter.

Volkswagen marketers, firmly convinced that Arteon buyers don’t really care about the interior of the Passat or the outstanding driving performance, are most likely right. This Volkswagen is virtually deprived weak points. So, in the absence of pronounced irritants, he will be chosen for his appearance alone - and here even the price will be secondary. Which, by the way, may turn out to be adequate.

In Europe, the 280-horsepower all-wheel drive Arteon costs 49,325 euros (about 3,150,000 rubles at the exchange rate as of mid-June); They will probably ask for similar money in Russia. We have to pay about the same amount for a well-equipped one. And the closest in size and concept, the Audi A7, which has been waiting for its replacement, is noticeably more expensive.

Interior


The interior of the car has been transformed, but there are few changes in it. The classic VAG architecture is used, thought out in terms of ergonomics and convenience. This is cool, but what’s upsetting is not the uniqueness of the interior as a whole.

The front seats are equipped with leather seats with great lateral support. The seats are electrically adjustable in 14 planes and heated. Free space quite enough.

Rear 3 seats, there is enough space. The passenger in the middle will be a little upset, since he does not have the most comfortable seat, but nothing can be done about it. There is a folding armrest equipped with two cup holders. Behind it is a ski hatch. The back row is also covered in leather, the outer seats received slight lateral support.

With this engine, the Volkswagen Arteon accelerates to hundreds in 5.6 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Consumption of about 9 liters of AI-95 in the city, on highway 6.


The engines are paired with a 9-speed robotic gearbox– DSG. The box is equipped double clutch, it transmits torque to all wheels using all-wheel drive 4Motion. This system all-wheel drive is also used on other premium cars.

The machine stands on the MQB platform, which implies a transverse engine arrangement and the use of high-strength steel. An independent MacPherson strut is used at the front, and an independent 4-link architecture at the rear. Adjustable DCC shock absorbers are available at an additional cost. This car is not yet available to Russian car enthusiasts, but soon it will definitely appear on our market. In total there are three configurations differing from each other in design and list of equipment.

  2. Elegance – 49,325 €;
  3. R-Line – 49,900 €.

The main differences are related to different equipment. Latest version has a different, more aggressive design. This is not the final cost, various options are offered additional options, increasing the cost of the car.

Sales have already begun in Germany, the liftback will come to us a little later. The popularity will not be as high as its predecessor due to the inflated cost. Many in Russia prefer other brands for that kind of money.
