Assembling Toyota. Where Toyota cars are assembled

The main country-manufacturer of Toyota cars is Japan, but with the growing popularity of the concern's products, it became necessary to cover the current demand and open new factories.

So, step by step, Toyota production was established in many countries of the world - France, Great Britain, Indonesia and others. Russia is no exception, where the products of this brand are especially appreciated.

About Toyota

The Toyota company began its activity with the manufacture of looms, and only in 1933 a workshop for the assembly of cars was opened.

Today Toyota is the largest corporation engaged in the production of more than a dozen car models and supplying products to almost all corners of the planet. The main office of the company is based in the eponymous city of Toyota.

The Second World War negatively affected the work of the company, and it was only possible to fully restore production by 1956. A year later, deliveries began to the United States and Brazil, and after another 5 years - to Europe.

By 2007, Toyota had earned the title of the largest automotive manufacturer and has been successfully retaining it to this day.

Certain difficulties arose in the periods of 2008-2009, when the concern ended the year with losses due to the financial crisis, but after a while the company managed to bypass such giants as General Motors and Volkswagen in sales.

By 2015, Toyota cars were recognized as the most expensive and demanded in the premium segment.

The main activity of the company is the manufacture of cars and buses.

The main facilities for the production of cars are located in Japan, but the factories of the concern are scattered around the world.

Production takes place in the following countries:

  • Thailand (Samut Prakan);
  • USA (Kentucky);
  • Indonesia (Jakarta);
  • Canada (Ontario) and others.

The concern's products are sent to Japan (about 45%), North America (about 13%), Asia, Europe and other regions of the world. Dealerships for the sale and service of Toyota are open in several dozen countries, and their number is only growing.

Sales in Russia

The history of Toyota cars in Russia began almost 20 years ago. Thus, in 1998 a representative office of the concern was opened in Moscow.

The first sales successes showed the correctness of the chosen vector, and after a while (in 2002) a marketing and sales company began to work. It is this year that is considered a full-fledged start of the activities of the Japanese manufacturer in the country.

Subsequently, the relationship between Japan and Russia in the automotive and other sectors actively developed. Thus, in 2007, Toyota Bank began operating in the Russian Federation, based in two cities - St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Financial institutions provided loans to clients and acted as lenders for authorized Lexus and Toyota dealers.

By the way, Toyota became the first manufacturer to open its banks in the Russian Federation.

In 2015, the popularity of Toyota cars reached its peak, which was confirmed by a record number of sales. About one hundred thousand cars were sold through official dealers.

The following models are in greatest demand - Camry, RAV 4, Land Cruiser, Prado and others.

An interesting fact is that the Land Cruiser 200 occupies a leading position in sales in the premium segment, and its share is almost 45%.

Models that are assembled in Russia - factories

In 2005, an agreement was signed between the Russian government and the Toyota concern for the construction of a car manufacturing plant in the industrial zone of St. Petersburg.

The project was launched 2 years later, and Toyota Camry became the first "domestic" model.

Initially, the volume of sales was 20 thousand cars annually, but the plans of the representatives of the concern were to increase the figure to 300 thousand units.

All cars that were produced in Russia were intended for the domestic market.

Despite the popularity of the Japanese brand's products, sales had declined by 2014, and about 13,000 cars were made in the first 6 months, which was 1.5% less than in the same period in 2013.

To expand production, it was decided to supply Toyota Camry, made near St. Petersburg, to other countries - Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Despite some problems, the plant continues to develop. For example, the construction of new stamping shops was recently completed, and in 2016 the production of RAV4 was launched.

The main question concerns the build quality, which many do not like.

In 2013, the release of another representative of the Toyota concern started - Land Cruiser Prado. The Far East became the center of production. At the same time, the beginning of assembly in Russia did not lead to a reduction in the cost of products, and prices remained at the same level. The planned production volume is 25 thousand cars annually.

The manufacture of cars in the Far East is focused on the domestic consumer - the Russian market.

In addition to the factories mentioned, Toyota for Russia is assembled in the following countries:

  • Japan (Tahara) is one of the largest suppliers. Ten models of cars have been produced here since 1918, and the total turnover exceeds 8 million cars annually. The facilities are serviced by about three hundred thousand employees.
  • France (Valensenn);
  • Japan (Tahara);
  • England (Bernanston);
  • Turkey (Sakarya).

Where is Toyota Camry going?

The Camry belongs to the D-class cars. Its production has been established in many countries of the world - China, Russia, Australia, England, the USA and, of course, in Japan itself.

During its existence, seven generations of the car have been produced and so far the manufacturer does not plan to slow down. Depending on the generation, the car can belong to the premium or middle class.

Until 2008, Toyota Camry for the Russian market were produced in Japan. After the opening of the plant in Shushary, domestic consumers are offered cars assembled at their own facilities. This continues to this day.

Toyota Corolla

The model is considered one of the most popular in the Russian Federation. This is a compact vehicle, which has been produced since 1966. After another 8 years (in 1974) the car hit the Guinness Book of Records - it became the best-selling in the world.

In 2016, this model celebrated its 50th anniversary and has sold more than 40 million vehicles during this period.

Previously, Corolla was assembled only in Japan, at the Takaoka plant. The situation changed in 2013, when the 11th generation of the machine was presented by the manufacturer.

From that moment on, the assembly of Corolla for Russia is being carried out in Turkey, in the city of Sakarya. Automotive supplies are carried out through Novorossiysk.

At present, only "Turkish" Corolla cars are available to motorists in the Russian Federation, but real "Japanese" cars can also be found in the secondary market.

There is a lot of discussion about build quality. According to the reviews of car owners and specialists, it has hardly changed.

At the plant in Turkey, modern equipment is installed, a staff of qualified employees is recruited, and the quality control is carried out by the representatives of Toyota themselves.

It should be noted that earlier Japanese brand Corolla cars were already produced in Turkey (from 1994 to 2006). Cars were sold not only in the territory of the Russian Federation, but also in other countries.

Toyota RAV 4

The RAV 4 model has earned popularity due to its compactness, solid appearance and rich "stuffing".

Production of the crossover began in 1994 and was initially aimed at young people. The number "4" in the name means the presence of a permanent all-wheel drive.

Today this crossover is in great demand among motorists in the Russian Federation. Until recently, assembly was carried out only in Japan at two factories - Takaoka and Taharan. This was until August 22, 2016. It was on this day that the first model car rolled off the assembly line of the plant in St. Petersburg.

The cars are planned to be sold not only in Russia, but also in a number of other countries - Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Toyota Prado

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado model is the pride of the Japanese concern. This SUV is rightfully considered one of the best representatives of the brand.

The advantages include an increased level of comfort, rich equipment, as well as a luxurious interior. The car is produced in 3 and 5-door versions.

Starting from the second generation, production was carried out with an emphasis on the Toyota 4Runner platform, but already from the 3rd generation, production was launched under the name Lexus GX.

Of greatest interest to domestic buyers are cars made in Japan. They are considered "purebred Japanese". All three Land Cruiser models (100, 200 and Prado) are assembled in Japan at the Tahara plant.

By the way, in 2013, the assembly of these cars was launched in Russia at an enterprise in Vladivostok, but already in 2015 the idea had to be abandoned. The reason was the low level of sales.

Toyota Avensis

The next representative of the D-class from the Japanese brand is Toyota Avensis. The main competitors are Opel Vectra and others.

In the European market, the car replaced Toyota Karina E, and in 2007 the Avensis station wagon appeared, which replaced Kaldina.

Despite the Japanese identity, cars have never been assembled on the territory of Japan. In general, the Avensis is not intended for the Japanese market. The main consumers are the countries of Europe and Russia.

On the territory of the Russian Federation, cars made in England are mainly sold at a plant in Derbyshire.

The first cars left the assembly line in 2008, and a year later their number exceeded 115 thousand. There are no complaints about the quality - everything is done with English precision and scrupulousness.

Toyota Hilux

Toyota Hilux is a special medium-sized pickup truck that has been sold in Russia since 2010.

Due to the longitudinal arrangement of the motor, the frame structure, as well as the all-wheel drive, the machine has earned popularity all over the world. To date, eight generations of this car have been produced.

For the Russian Federation, Toyota Hilux is assembled in two countries - Thailand and South Africa. Generally speaking, assembly for other countries has also been established in Argentina and Indonesia.

Toyota Highlander

Another representative of the Japanese brand, Toyota Highlander, deserves special attention. This vehicle belongs to the class of off-road vehicles and is built on the basis of Toyota K.

The first performance took place in 2000. The main consumers are young people aged 20-30.

Initially, the model was intended for sale only in Japan. The Highlander class is higher than RAV 4, but inferior to the Prado.

The main consumers of this car are Americans, but there is a certain demand in Russia as well.

Vehicles assembled in the USA (Indiana, Priston) and slightly adapted to local conditions come to the territory of the Russian Federation.

Sienna minivans are also assembled here. The car is also made in Japan, but these models are sent to the EU countries.

Toyota Venza

Toyota Venza car belongs to the class of 5-seater crossovers. Initially, the car was produced for the United States, but since 2013 it has been presented on the Russian market.

Toyota Venza is positioned as a car for young families who travel a lot and love an active lifestyle. The first sales in the world started at the end of 2008.

The model is distinguished by reliability, rich functional content and comfort. In 2012, shortly before the start of sales in Russia, a restyled version was presented.

Since 2015, the car has not been sold in the United States, and in 2016 sales in the Russian market also ceased. Today, Toyota Venza can still be found in the markets of China and Canada.

Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris is a compact Japanese hatchback. Vehicle production started in 1999.

The name Yaris was borrowed from the name of the ancient Greek goddess of joy and fun (original name - Charis).

The second name of the car is Vitz, but it only applies to cars made for the Japanese market.

In Europe and Japan, the car appeared in the same year - in 1999. In 2005, a second generation car was presented, and in 2006 sales started in Russia.

Cars of the 3rd generation were produced only in Japan, at the plant in Yokohama, and were intended for the domestic market. Soon, production started in France, from where the model goes to the EU and Russia.

Toyota FJ Cruiser

The FJ Cruiser from Toyota is a compact SUV with an original retro style.

The concept was first presented in 2003, and production itself was launched two years later.

In the USA and Canada, the first sales started in 2007. Outwardly, the car resembles the FJ40 model, which was produced 50 years ago.

The car is only produced in Japan. At the same time, sales of this model in the United States were discontinued in 2014.

Over the past two years, cars have been available in the markets of Japan, China, Australia and several other countries. In 2016, the company announced its intention to discontinue production of the FJ Cruiser.

Toyota Prius

Auto is a mid-size "hybrid" from a Japanese brand that can run on gasoline and electricity. The battery has a large capacity, reaching 1.3-1.4 kWh.

The electric motor is capable of performing the functions of a generator and recharging the battery.

The production of cars is carried out exclusively in Japan, at the Tsutsumi plant. In 2015, a new generation of the car was presented, and already in February 2017, the first orders came from Russia.

Country of origin by VIN-code, how to find out?

You can get information about the country of manufacture of the car using the Vin-code, which is given in the documents or printed on a special plate of the car.

Toyota cars may not contain:

  • In the left corner of the dashboard;
  • Under the front passenger seat (on the right side);
  • On the frame of the open driver's door.

The country of origin can be recognized by the first three characters. If the first character is J, the machine is made in Japan.

Here it is worth highlighting the following options:

  • SB1 - Great Britain;
  • AHT and ACU - South Africa;
  • VNK - France;
  • TW0 and TW1 - Portugal;
  • 3RZ - Mexico;
  • 6T1 - Australia;
  • LH1 - China;
  • PN4 - Malaysia;
  • 5TD, 5TE, 5X0 - USA.

Also, when decoding, it is worth focusing on the 11th character.

The options are as follows:

  • From 0 to 9 - the country of origin Japan;
  • C - country of origin Canada;
  • M, S, U, X, Z - country of origin USA.

Subsequent digits are the serial number.

See below for a full explanation of the VIN code of a Toyota car.

Despite the existing difficulties, Toyota continues to develop. And if old models disappear from the market, they are replaced by even more interesting and modern cars.

The manufacturer also holds its positions in the Russian market, which is confirmed by the release of new models at local facilities.

The opinion that foreign cars are created in other states, and that they are delivered ready-made to the territory of Russia, is very widespread. But for those who do not yet know where the Toyota Camry is assembled, it will be interesting to know that the car assembly plant is located in the Russian Federation, since this can significantly reduce the cost of the car and transportation costs.

The plant where Toyota Camry 2016 is assembled is located today in the Leningrad Region, near the village of Shushary. The enterprise operates in accordance with the relevant agreement on international cooperation between the Russian manufacturer and the Japanese company Toyota Motor.

The construction of the factory halls began in 2005 and the first production line was launched in 2007. With the release of new models by the original company, similar drawings and supplies of materials are transferred to Russian representatives so that our market receives the same machines on time together with the whole world. Thus, the Toyota Camry plant in Russia, where Japanese cars are assembled, today is actively working in Shushary, and produces a wide line of models.

Initially, the production of 50 thousand cars was calculated, but the capacity was not used in full force. Today there are forecasts for the expansion of the plant's production capacity to 300 thousand cars, but so far there is no urgent need for this.

What exactly are the specialists doing at the Shushary plant? Designers in Japan are engaged in the development of new models and features of cars, which is quite natural. When the plant was opened on Russian territory, its tasks included only assembling cars from ready-made structures. Since 2012, the possibilities have been expanding, and it has been entrusted with the problems of not only assembling, but also welding and painting machines. In addition, all mechanisms and vehicles are tested to ensure reliability and safety.

Build quality in Russia

There is an opinion that the Russian assembly is of lower quality than the assembly by foreign specialists. Indeed, Japanese classic sedans are significantly different from those that roll off the assembly lines in Shushary! The main differences that can be highlighted:

In the Leningrad Region, there are no factories where the Toyota Camry engine is assembled, like many parts and structural elements. Such equipment is supplied already assembled and prepared for use from foreign manufacturers.

Watch the video of how the Toyota Camry sxv10 was assembled to see how professional and high-tech this process is at a Russian plant. Mechanical engineering in Russia is actively developing, and the plant is increasing the production of Japanese-Russian machines every year!

During the testing of a car in production in Shushary, each car is checked thoroughly enough, and the manufacturer is ready to give official guarantees of the safety and strength of the structures.

Which is better - Japanese or Russian assembly?

When a plant appeared in Russia, the question arose which was better to choose - Japanese or local assembly. There is a widespread belief that original assemblies are more reliable and of higher quality, but is this really so? This is how the Toyota Camry is assembled in Russia (video), and here you can be convinced that technological progress in Russia does not stand still, and the assembly process is carried out with all the necessary precautions and in accordance with standards and international requirements.

User experience suggests that the car is not critically different from its Japanese twins. Of course, there are small parts that differ from Japanese modifications, such as tires or glass, but domestic parts in this regard are as high-quality and reliable as those used in Japan. However, according to social surveys (http://info.drom.ru/surveys/10996/), more than 75% of motorists are not at all sure about this, and the rest, for the most part, believe that a decent quality of Russian assembly is possible only with strict control behind this process.

The Russian assembly is definitely cheaper, which is impossible not to appreciate. All tests show that the engine (which, we recall, is assembled abroad) is capable of operating at the same level as in Japanese versions, and this is one of the main indicators of technology of this level. Other mechanisms and control systems also do not fail during inspections and testing.

There is a humorous assumption that if the representatives of the official Toyota company decide to play a prank on users and swap the Japanese and Russian modifications, then no one will notice the substitution, since there is practically no difference between the cars!

Some car owners note that the Russian paintwork is softer and easily damaged by mechanical means. At the same time, there are no complaints about tires and glass in the reviews from users, therefore we can safely say that the claims against the Russian plant in the Leningrad Region are quite small and insignificant. This only confirms that the Russian assembly is no worse than the Japanese one, but at the same time it is much cheaper!

Acquisition in different cities of Russia

Russian manufacturers, of course, have their own peculiarities regarding quality control of work. However, at the plant in Shushary, initially strict rules and principles of assembly and production processes were established, due to which the risk of rejects and various failures is minimized.

The plant where the 2016 Toyota Camry is assembled for Russia offers competitive prices for cars for residents throughout the country. But it should be noted that the price may vary depending on the region, and therefore, across the country, the cost varies from 700 thousand to 2 million rubles (depending on the condition and configuration), and sometimes it is required to pay for the delivery of the car to the desired city.

Toyota has considered the Toyota Camry sedan as its flagship sedan for many years. For a quarter of a century, this model has been the best-selling model on the world market. It has gone through seven generations of restyling without losing its exceptional properties.

In our language, the name of the car is translated as "Crown". And she really looks like a king. No one doubts whether to buy this car. But, almost everyone asks the question of where the Toyota Camry is assembled. After all, assembly often determines quality.

Who collects Toyota Camry

Toyota Camry production depends on the country where this model is assembled. "Crowned" cars are made in six factories in five countries. Each of them has excellent production facilities and the most modern equipment.

The main country where Toyota Camry is made is Japan. The car is produced in the city of the same name in the province of Aichi. Factory assembly is considered to be the best in the world for Camry models.

In America, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc, where the Toyota Camry is manufactured, is located in the United States. In the state of Kentucky, a car has been rolling off the assembly line for a long time, and this is where very powerful equipment is located.

Another plant located in America is located in the state of Indiana in the city of Gibson. The production is called Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. It consists of several divisions and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, Inc. - one of them. Toyota Camry has been produced here since 2003.

The fourth Toyota Camry assembly facility is located in Australia. It was opened more than 50 years ago and is a leader in the production of cars in the Pacific Ocean regions. The assembly shop is located in the city of Altona. The model has been produced here since 2009. Also, the production of cars with hybrid power plants has been established here.

In addition to the Australian market, this plant produces its vehicles in the markets of the Middle East, Southeast Asia and New Zealand.

The Chinese version of the Toyota Camry is made by GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. The enterprise is located in Guangzhou. Created the enterprise in 2004, and the first Camris rolled off the assembly line in 2006 in May. There is also a production of hybrid engines for the Camry.

Where is Toyota Camry assembled for Russia

For our market, the Toyota Camry is assembled directly from us. The plant is called Toyota Motor Manufacturing Russia and is located near St. Petersburg. Cars of the current brand have been rolling off the Russian assembly line since 2007. At the moment, the Japanese are considering the creation of another enterprise on the territory of the Russian Federation. Particular attention here will be focused on cars of class "E" and "D", therefore, this also applies to the Toyota Camry model.

But at the moment there are not enough cars produced in St. Petersburg. Therefore, most of the copies come from Japan. Although, if you look at it, the Japanese brand did not set itself the goal of releasing as many models as possible. All the attention of Russian engineers was focused on the quality of cars. Therefore, our assembly Toyota Camry meets all Japanese quality standards.

The plant in Russia received all the same new technologies that are installed in the production facilities of the Land of the Rising Sun. Any model goes through many stages of verification. If any defect is found here, then the car will be immediately sent for recycling. Our plant carries out a full cycle of production of Toyota Camry.

The Russian production of Camry differs from the Japanese only in tires. The Japanese fit Yokohama tires, while our technicians prefer Michelin. Also, it is worth mentioning the quality of the paintwork. Russian paint is very soft. You will feel the differences almost immediately, because in order to scratch the Toyota Camry of our assembly, a small branch from a tree is enough. The Japanese use a different coating technique and paint of a different quality. Therefore, they are not afraid of such problems.

The drawback of both our and the Japanese assembly is the upholstery. Its quality could be better, and it loses significantly to competitors in the segment.

Toyota Motor RUS LLC, the official representative of Toyota in Russia, sells cars assembled at Japanese and European factories in the Russian Federation. Today we have officially sold 10 models. And most of them are brought directly from Japan.

Toyota Corolla. All cars of this brand intended for sale in the Russian Federation are assembled at the Takaoka plant in Japan. The assembly takes place on the same assembly line as the assembly of the Japanese right-hand drive Toyota Corolla. The same plant assembles Toyota ist and its export version Scion xD, which is sold in the United States.

Toyota Camry. Until recently, all Toyota Camry cars sold in Russia were assembled at the Japanese plant Tsutsumi (Toyoda city). They share the assembly line with Toyota Prius (right and left hand drive), Toyota Premio (right hand drive) and Scion tC (left hand drive, for the US market). With the commissioning of the plant in Shushary (St. Petersburg), Toyota Camry is produced there for the Russian market. Before the start of production, the workers of the plant underwent an internship at the plant in Tsutsumi.

Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Toyota RAV4 come to Russia from the Japanese Tahara plant. All TLCs and RAV4s intended for the Japanese domestic market are also assembled there. The assembly of left-hand drive and right-hand drive cars is on the same line. There is, however, a separate line for Lexus cars, but it also has left (export) and right (Japanese) cars in a row.

Toyota Avensis. This model, like the Auris, is assembled at the British Burnaston plant. Avensis is not produced in Japan.

Toyota Yaris. The compact car, the twin of the Japanese Toyota Vitz, is assembled for the Russian market at a plant in France.

Toyota Corolla Verso for the Russian market is assembled in Turkey, at the plant in Adapazari. This enterprise has been operating since 1990. Toyota Auris is also assembled here, but this car does not go to the Russian market.

Doubt about the origin of the car? Look at the VIN number!

Japanese manufacturers, as well as manufacturers around the world, use VIN numbers (Vehicle Identification Number) for unique marking of cars intended for sale on the world market; cars for the Japanese domestic market do not have a VIN number, it is replaced by a Frame number. VIN-number or VIN-code - 17-digit alphanumeric vehicle identifier, which contains all information about the car. Just he can help in determining the country of production.

The first digit or letter in the VIN code indicates the country of manufacture. Cars manufactured in Japan, in all cases without exception, are marked only with the letter "J". The second letter or number represents the manufacturer's name:
"T" or "B" - Toyota,
"N" - Nissan and Infiniti,
"M" or "A" - Mitsubishi,
"F" - Japanese Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries), "S" - American branch of Subaru,
"H" - Honda and Acura,
"M" - Mazda,
"S" for Suzuki.

It is equipped with the latest technology.

Toyota Camry production at the St. Petersburg plant

In 2005, Toyota entered into an agreement with the Russian government to build an automobile plant in St. Petersburg, more precisely in its industrial zone. Production started in 2007. The manufactured product was a Toyota Camry car. The volume of production began with 20 thousand cars, and in the future it was planned to increase this figure to 300 thousand cars a year. The cars produced were intended for the Russian market.

But this never happened and production began to decline over time.

So, in the first half of 2014, only a little more than 13 thousand cars were produced. During the same period of 2013, 1.5% more cars were produced. Where are they, these 300 thousand cars, which the manufacturers were counting on? Toyota Camry cars, in order to maintain sales volume, began to be supplied to Kazakhstan and Belarus. In the beginning, over $ 150 million was invested in this project.

Most recently, Toyota has completed the construction of new stamping shops. It is also calculated that in a few years the assembly of the Rav 4 crossover will begin at the St. Petersburg plant. True, there is reason to doubt the effectiveness of this company whether everything will turn out the same as with the Toyota Camry. Many people did not like the build quality carried out in Russia.

Release of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in Vladivostok

In 2013, the assembly of the world-famous Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV began in the Far East. The price of the car remained the same as for the Japanese assembly of this car. The production volume, planned for the next year, should be 25 thousand vehicles per year.

Time will tell whether it will succeed.

Toyota production in Russia was aimed at the Russian automotive market. And many counted on a reduction in the price of models assembled in our country. Which, unfortunately, did not happen, in particular with the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. But, despite this, many Russian motorists, who are allowed financial opportunities for this, give their preference to this frame SUV. He is able to emphasize the style and wealth of the car owner in the best way.

Toyota's motto Drive a Dream, in relation to the Prado Land Cruiser, unfortunately, is not available to many.
