Toyota fortuner comparison with prado. Honest test drive of Toyota Fortuner: give way to the beast. Comparison of Toyota Fortuner with Hilux and LC Prado

Toyota Fortuner - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: both have side member frames, independent suspensions front and rear axle, 2.8 liter diesel with 6-speed automatic transmission, lowering and 7-seater interior. Real! We have two almost identical cars, which even have very similar prices.

Toyota couldn’t decide for a long time whether to expand the lineup whether a company in Russia is a Toyota Fortuner model or not, because the first generation SUV was not officially offered in our country. As a result, almost 2.5 years have passed since the world debut of the second generation Fortuner, until Russian representative office brand decided to start sales.

For a basic Toyota Fortuner they ask for exactly 2 million rubles, and the Prado will cost 200 thousand more. If we compare diesel versions, like ours, then the price is correspondingly 2.6 million rubles. for Fortuner and 2.92 million rubles for Prado. Is it worth overpaying, and in general, why? Toyota company two very close cars?

Over the 2 months of sales since its debut at the end of October 2017, 1,270 buyers voted for Fortuner in rubles. The updated Prado showed growth during the same period of time and showed a result of 4,070 cars sold. We looked for the answer to the question of whether it is worth overpaying for the status of the Prado, and whether the Fortuner is so hardy, in the snow-covered forests of the Moscow region and on the icy track of the training ground.

Toyota Fortuner - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for real men

The new Fortuner is the company’s second model, after the Hilux pickup, built on the IMV platform. The “trolley” is based on the most durable Heavy Duty type spar frame among civilian Toyotas, and the manufacturer positions the Fortuner as an SUV designed for operation in difficult conditions, but not utilitarian in equipment: the list of options includes quite “civilian” climate control, multimedia with 7-inch display, leather interior, system directional stability and other attributes of comfort and safety.

In total, Toyota has 3 options for the spar frame: Heavy Duty, which is used on the Fortuner and pickup truck (they differ in length and rear suspension, but the frame design is very similar), Light Duty is used on the Prado and Premium for and.

Already from the very designation of the frame one can understand that the Fortuner, assembled in Thailand, is created for more difficult work, and Prado is closer to premium. The same can be said about the all-wheel drive design. If the Fortuner, like the one, uses a simpler and cheaper Part-time scheme with constant rear wheel drive and a rigid connection of the front end, the Prado has a more advanced permanent all-wheel drive with a differential. Although, if desired, it can be blocked. There are lowering units on both cars.

The Prado's suspension design is also more advanced. IN expensive versions it is equipped with switchable stabilizers lateral stability KDSS. In the city their presence does not reveal itself at all. In terms of roll level, the Prado is quite comparable to the Fortuner, but off-road the stabilizers stop preventing the axles from crossing, and on very steep bends, where the Fortuner hangs the rear wheel, the Prado still holds.

The Fortuner's competitor in our test, and on the Russian market, is a fellow concern, a long-time bestseller in its segment, the Land Cruiser Prado, which recently underwent another update. The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is based on the Light Duty frame - a compromise between comfort and off-road qualities. And, although Prado is a self-explanatory brand, a “timeless” car with an army of loyal fans, Fortuner with exactly the same engine and similar equipment is 300 thousand rubles cheaper.

The cars on test have the same 2.8-liter diesel 177-horsepower engines, 6-speed automatic transmissions, and are shod with identical tires, so both in stopwatch competitions and off-road, the features of the transmission and chassis settings will come to the fore.

In very deep snow

Fortuner is rear-wheel drive in normal conditions, front-wheel drive hard-wired.

Prado with permanent all-wheel drive; moreover, in the arsenal of a more expensive SUV there is a choice among an abundance electronic assistants, facilitating off-road driving (active traction control system, assistance system when driving on descent and ascent, system for maintaining constant speed on off-road), and our version provides the possibility of forced locking of the rear cross-axle differential.

On both cars, all-wheel drive is controlled by electronics, and although both Fortuner and Prado have a range of low-range gears, modern cars Cross-country ability depends not only on the driver’s skill, but also on artificial intelligence.

It is better not to take it to extremes: the front towing eye on the Prado is located extremely inconveniently, and the need to use it off-road will not meet the owner’s enthusiasm, unless, of course, he is a fan of off-roading.

The ground clearance of the Toyota Fortuner is 10 mm greater than that of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (225 versus 215 mm). A strong feature of the Prado is driver friendliness: even the least experienced owner will be protected by electronics on rough terrain. Potentially, the Fortuner is not inferior to the Prado in terms of off-road potential, however, in order to realize it, the Fortuner must be driven by a sophisticated driver.

At first glance, it may seem that the presence of locking rear and central differentials, as well as assistive electronics, can replace large suspension travel, but even when using its full off-road potential in deep snow, we clearly found that the Prado will go a little further than the Fortuner.

To increase comfort, the Prado boasts rear air suspension with height adjustment. On ground clearance this does not affect, since under the protection of the engine and crankcase rear axle it remains unchanged. But the air suspension allows you to maintain a constant body height regardless of the load, and it will also come in handy when loading the car or, for example, when towing a heavy trailer. You can lower the stern to the down position, drive under the trailer tongue, and then lift the vehicle.

And, of course, the mass of auxiliary electronics, which in the Prado has almost reached the level of the Land Cruiser 200. winter conditions We didn’t find any meaning in it. Under full throttle and from acceleration it goes noticeably further than with the help of assistants. And if you sit down, take a rope or a shovel, whichever is closer.

At a meeting with friends, the owner of the new Prado will have something to brag about. There is MTS - Multi-Terrain Select. This is a puck with which the driver can choose one of six types of off-road terrain that he is now going to conquer. You can also set the speed of off-road cruise control. The main thing in the heat of battle is not to mix up the pucks. Previously, the Prado had one puck, but now there are two. One is responsible for electronic assistants, and the second is quite serious - it turns on the lowering control.

There are still three buttons next to the selector, but they now have five powertrain operating options: Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport S and Sport S+. This, of course, does not add speed, especially when there is a 177-horsepower diesel engine under the hood, and the car’s weight noticeably exceeds 2 tons, but it can boast - almost like a Mercedes AMG.

While the Prado is clean, 4 all-round cameras and interesting feature"transparent hood" The system records an image from the front camera and, as the car moves forward, an image of what the wheels are currently moving on is displayed on the screen. True, in the snow there is zero help from such a system. An X-ray or an echo sounder would be more useful here, but these are just fantasies.

Toyota-Land-Cruiser-Prado: The center console in the interior has been noticeably updated. It became a little lower, which, together with the central depression on the hood, improved visibility. Just like on a 200, the driver can better see the track he’s walking on. right wheel. Sunroof - you always know where the sun is.

Fortuner, of course, does not have all of the above, and this is what makes it more accessible and more reliable. KDSS system, adjustable shock absorbers and even more so, air suspension in severe off-road conditions does not potentially exclude problems. Toyota Fortuner can be safely plunged into the snow and swamps. We even jumped on it from a rather large slide ( look at the video), we thought it would fall apart, but no, it landed and then jumped again.

The only thing that may cause concern to the Fortuner owner is the electric transfer case. If there had been an ordinary poker instead, many would have been happy.

See details about combating deep snow on video: in a real situation, both cars had to be pulled out; it’s good that they did it without a tractor. In a pair of Toyota Fortuner - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - the latter will drive further in deep snow.

We're driving in a slippery circle

Compared to the Land Cruiser Prado, the Toyota Fortuner is 100 kg lighter and, with the same 177-horsepower diesel engine, it feels a little more dynamic. Although I still don’t want to ride it recklessly. Toyota doesn't even list a 0-60 mph time. But given that the Prado does the sprint in 12.7 seconds, we can assume that the Fortuner should leave in 12.5 seconds. It’s still not fast, but it’s even more scary to turn on it.

When turning the steering wheel quickly, the Toyota Fortuner sometimes bites the steering wheel, although the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado does not have such a problem.

Our goal during a fast lap is, of course, to find out who is faster, but not to choose best SUV for racing, but to get an idea of how these monsters will behave in emergency situation, for example, if necessary to dodge an obstacle on the highway.

On the fast lap, oddly enough, Prado was better, although he lost a little in seconds. Yes, it's a little heavier, but the better suspension, even without electronic assistance, clearly helps it. The steering wheel is lighter and more accurate, and the ergonomics are better.

During dynamic runs on packed snow, the Fortuner turned out to be faster than the heavier Prado, but only by a few moments - 0.3 seconds. At the same time, the Fortuner was inferior to the Prado in terms of handling and ride comfort: the rigidity of the Fortuner is tiring, and what was initially taken for brutality looks ponderous and even excessive during active use.

Fresh appearance and the refined interior has not changed the essence of the Fortuner - first of all, this is a car for overcoming, and not for solving routine tasks.

Toyota-Fortuner: the second row is spacious and comfortable.

Toyota-Fortuner: there may be a third row of seats.

Toyota-Fortuner: Our snow removal equipment It's relaxed here.

Toyota-Land-Cruiser-Prado in position - two rows of seats.

Toyota-Land-Cruiser-Prado - the second row is spacious.

Conclusion: Toyota Fortuner - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - both are real! If you want to save money, Fortuner will help.

In contrast to the huge margin of safety of the Fortuner, the Land Cruiser Prado does not flex its muscles in vain: it is a universal, liquid vehicle, whose advantages are passed on from generation to generation.

Toyota Fortuner is new, it is young, but still green. Perhaps somewhere in the outback his less noble manners will come in handy, but for a city dweller he is not yet up to the task.

Manufacturer's pricing policy: Toyota Fortuner - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
After appearing on the Russian market petrol versions, base price for Fortuner decreased to 2 million rubles, which is exactly what official dealers ask for a car with a 2.7-liter gasoline engine with a power of 166 hp and a 5-speed manual transmission in the “Standard” configuration. For a 6-automatic transmission and the next “Comfort” package with it, you will have to pay an additional 385 thousand. The richest versions of “Elegance” and “Prestige” are available only with diesel unit(from 2.638 million rubles).
Prado Configurator offers options that dealers do not equip Fortuner with at any price. The price range is almost double: if the “Classic” version is estimated at 2.289 million rubles, then the “Safety Luxury” starts at 4.089 million rubles! A choice of 2 petrol and diesel engines, 5-speed manual transmission or 6-automatic transmission, 5- or 7-seat interior configuration, in addition, a wide range of additional equipment is available for the Land Cruiser Prado.

But first let's deal with two important points. First, how is the name Fortuner actually pronounced correctly? Toyota is categorical here: no “Fortuners”, “Fortuners”, “Fortuners” and other variations! In Russia, the English pronunciation of the word Fortuner is used, and it sounds like “Fortuneer”, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

Why only this way, and not otherwise, is available in our “Let me speak” section. By the way, some Russian wits have already attached to the car the nicknames “Grump” and “Fortune” (Fortuner - from the word Fortune, “fortune”)...

Fortuner in Russia has at least 17-inch wheels with 265/65 tires. The top version “Prestige” (pictured) has 265/60 R18 road tires, but for the test they installed more “toothy” tires. LED headlights low and high beam - basic equipment.

The second point is genealogy. Contrary to common misconception, neither the first (2005-2015) nor the second generation Fortuner (since 2015) use the Land Cruiser Prado platform! The Fortuner, both past and present, is based on the more durable frame chassis and units of the Hilux pickup truck of the corresponding generations.

Minimum price

Maximum price

Although the platforms have differences, of course. The wheelbase of the current Fortuner (2,745 mm) is 340 mm shorter than the current generation Hilux. The pendants are also different. The shock absorbers on the Fortuner are different, with more comfortable settings. And instead of springs at the rear - softer springs, anti-roll bar and other kinematics with 4 longitudinal jet thrusts and one transverse.

Question from azarenko

How is Fortuner different from Prado?

Toyota claims the Fortuner as a car for those who do not want to overpay for a Prado, and plans to actively use the car as an SUV and an expedition vehicle. It would be a pity to ruin the expensive and sophisticated Prado off-road; the Casco insurance on it is worth it like a cast-iron bridge, and they buy it more often as a “statusmobile”, rather than an earth-moving projectile. And the Fortuner, standing one step below, is exactly that simplified and more utilitarian alternative, without unnecessary pathos and show-off.

Against the backdrop of the “Asian” decoration of the Fortuner Prado salon It clearly looks stricter, more concise - and more expensive. The slippery wood on the steering wheel is out of place, the dirty multimedia screen (there is no navigation) is dissonant with the ancient buttons on the dashboard, and the plump leather “cheeks” of the center console interfere with the knees. But the gears click through the steering wheel, there's space for coffee and a phone, and an electric heater in the air ducts helps warm up the cabin faster.

In addition, SUVs have different bodies, different interiors and equipment levels (Fortuner is simpler). For example, all-round cameras, front seat ventilation, 3-zone climate control, rear air suspension, adaptive and off-road cruise control, auto-braking function, lane control and driver fatigue, the MTS off-road mode selection system is available in the Prado, but the more utilitarian Fortuner does not have them at all.

The Prado has permanent all-wheel drive with a Torsen interaxle “self-locking” (it can be locked forcibly), while the Fortuner has a front axle that is rigidly connected by the driver (part-time scheme) only on slippery surfaces. Forced blocking Both SUVs have a rear cross-axle differential.

  1. The glove box is 2-story (the top one is cooled), under the corner air ducts there are retractable cup holders.
  2. The "beak" of the armrest interferes with the use of buttons rear lock, disabling stabilization and calibration of tire pressure sensors. In front of them are the keys for the “power” and economy modes of the automatic transmission.
  3. The “climate” block is clear and convenient. The all-wheel drive selector (bottom left) is easy to use by touch without taking your eyes off the road. Nearby are the hill descent assistant buttons, heated steering wheel and 1-stage heated front seats.

The dimensions are also different: the Prado is 45 mm longer, 30 mm wider and 60 mm higher than the Fortuner. Also at Prado wheelbase 45 mm longer and the track 50 mm wider. The Fortuner has more ground clearance (225 mm versus 215), but the Prado has a steeper approach angle (32 degrees versus 29), and the departure angle is parity (25 degrees).

Question from arturfritzandreev

Is the engine still the same? How about the old ones?

Not really. Under the hood of the Fortuner delivered to Russia is a completely new 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel, which debuted in 2015. current generation, and in the same year I registered for Prado. By the way, it also has a 150-horsepower younger brother, the 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV, but the Fortuner with such an engine is not yet sold in Russia, although it is available in other world markets.

The Russian diesel Fortuner has two batteries and an engine coolant heater in the form of a viscous coupling that heats up during operation and is driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley (the same circuit on the Hilux and LC200). You can also lift it in the parking lot idle speed button. Prado has preheater engine and interior, controlled by application or SMS, but Fortuner is not entitled to it.

The top-end 2.8-liter diesel engine has direct 5-stage fuel injection with a pressure of 2200 bar, a faster-accelerating variable geometry turbocharger and a timing chain. Recoil - 177 hp and 450 Nm of torque, while the 3-liter predecessor had 171 “horses” and 360 Nm. The new diesel engine meets Euro-5 standards, for which purpose it is installed in the exhaust tract in addition to the catalyst particulate filter. Gearbox under Russian market- only 6-speed automatic.

With the new diesel engine and automatic transmission, the Fortuner drove faster and quieter than with its 3-liter predecessor. No revelations, but it confidently pulls from a stop and accelerates from medium speeds and revs, less often requiring downshifts, driving out due to the increased torque. And the diesel now also reacts more quickly to the gas pedal than before. You can also speed up the engine and gearbox by pressing the Power Mode button near the gearbox selector - it makes the gas response sharper.

The engine compartment, aluminum transfer case and fuel tank are covered with steel protection. The towing eyes are hidden behind the top plastic flaps.

On the highway, with active acceleration, the diesel pressure drops as expected, although even here overtaking was possible without problems. By the way, the box still does not have a manual mode, but traditional Toyota ranges. That is, the number when “tidying” does not show the stage, but the range of switching - for example, from first to third. As for the engine speed, in 6th gear and 2000 rpm the speedometer shows almost 120 km/h.

On the move, the diesel Prado will be quieter: in the Fortuner, the characteristic diesel growl breaks through into the cabin more, especially at high speed during active acceleration and overtaking. As for fuel consumption, a pre-restyling one rode with us in the convoy. diesel Prado. In city-highway-off-road mode on-board computer Fortuner got 12.5-13.1 l/100 km, Prado - 13.4-14.1 l/100 km. Fuel tank Fortuner has 80 liters, Prado - 87.

Leather seat upholstery and power steering for the driver's seat are only available in the top version, although there is no lumbar support adjustment. The ease of seating is without revelations (Prad's seats seem more comfortable), and the ranges of longitudinal adjustments of the steering wheel and seats are too small for tall people. There are handrails on the racks only at the front.

In numbers, the Fortuner's dynamics are also faster than the Prado's: maximum speed 180 km/h versus 175, and acceleration to 100 km/h for the diesel Fortuner takes 11.2 seconds versus 12.7 for the Prado. Where does this difference come from if the engines, gearboxes and even the main pairs (3.9) are the same for both SUVs? The larger diesel Prado is heavier: it has a curb weight of 2235-2500 kg, depending on the configuration, while the Fortuner weighs 2215-2260 kg. By the way, the weight of the towed trailer with brakes is the same for both SUVs and amounts to 3 tons.

Question from shax0055 and shefah89

How does it handle the road at high speeds, what is the ride smoothness and vibration load?

In tests of SUVs, the journalistic fraternity often writes that they say that this car would have had “toothier” tires. Toyota clearly heard these calls and changed the shoes of the test cars, replacing the standard road tires with more “evil” Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac AT tires in the serial size 265/60 R18 (these are required top-end configuration"Prestige", which was on the test). And since we had to drive on icy roads, these tires were also studded.

  1. There are air ducts both on the ceiling and under the front seats. The ceiling remote control controls only the second air conditioner.
  2. At the back there is a drawer with a 12-volt socket, pockets for small items and hooks for bags.
  3. The seating position on the middle sliding row is low, there is room for the knees, but under the front seats it is cramped for the feet in large shoes. With a height of 180 cm, a fist passes over your head, in front there is a larger gap to the ceiling. You can’t tilt the backrest (it has an armrest with cup holders) far back - the folded seats of the 3rd row get in the way.

There is no doubt that on such “bast shoes” the Fortuner looks cooler, and on off-road the tires cling and “row” unlike the standard ones, and on rocks you are less afraid of punctures due to the thicker sidewall and developed tread. But such wheels are very heavy, and the increased unsprung masses immediately affected how the car drives. But it is clear what the future owner who wants to install more off-road tires on the Fortuner needs to prepare for.

And you need to prepare for a rougher and bumpier ride than the Prado, although this should not be surprising. On the highway, the Fortuner holds a straight line normally, handles and brakes adequately, rolls predictably, and the tires are less noisy than expected. But also because of the heavy wheels, the Fortuner transmits medium and large defects in the fabric to the steering wheel, seats and body in the form of pokes and vibrations, shaking the rear riders into speed bumps.

You can engage the front axle (H4 mode) at speeds up to 100 km/h, and there are no speed restrictions on disabling it. There is an oil overheat sensor in the front gearbox, which sends a signal to the dashboard.

On graders and primers, you also need to “pile” with caution. As long as the wheels are more or less level, everything is fine, you can drive briskly. But if you fall into a large hole, then along with impacts on the steering wheel, it’s easy to catch a hard breakdown of the front suspension, which happened to us more than once or twice.

If potholes and gullies come in succession, then good progress the suspension does not have time to work out the movement of the heavy wheels - and the Fortuner, trembling all over, begins to “float”, especially with the stern. Here you have to not yawn and catch it with the steering wheel, because the stabilization system is in no hurry to interfere with the process and allows the stern to noticeably move to the side. In order to feel sorry for the car and passengers, in such situations you need to either slow down or relieve the tire pressure to soften the ride.

Question from yuragrustniy

Fortuner was supposed to be cheaper than Prado, but something went wrong...

And Fortuner even in expensive trim levels cheaper, especially when comparing diesel versions of SUVs! And then the situation is obvious. The restyled 5-seater Land Cruiser Prado with a 2.8 liter diesel engine costs from 2,922,000 rubles, and the 7-seater version with this engine costs 4,026,000 rubles! Against this background, the diesel Fortuner costs 2,599,000 rubles for the Elegance package and 2,827,000 rubles for the Prestige. That is, already at the start, the Fortuner is 323,000 rubles cheaper than the Prado. And even in the top version, it is still 95,000 rubles cheaper than the basic diesel version of its older brother.

  1. It won't be fun for adults in the third row.
  2. In Russia, the Fortuner is still only a 7-seater. The third row in the stowed position is fastened with belts to the sides of the body and eats up a lot of space in the trunk. Toyota advises you to unscrew these seats if you don't need them.
  3. When the second row of seats is folded forward, there is no flat floor along the entire length of the trunk.

As noted above, the Fortuner has simpler equipment than the more “premium” Prado, but it’s still not bad. Already in the database there is a “winter” package, which includes heated steering wheel, front seats, mirrors, parking zone for windshield wipers, a diesel heater with an additional electric interior heater, as well as ceiling air ducts for rear passengers.

The starting price also includes LED foglights and headlights (low/high), running boards, 1-zone climate control and a second air conditioner for back rows, cooled/heated glove box, cruise control, leather multifunction steering wheel with steering wheel paddles, servo windows and folding mirrors, rear view camera with parking sensors, light and tire pressure sensors and multimedia system with a 7-inch screen and 6 speakers. Safety is ensured by 7 airbags, car and trailer stabilization systems, and a hill start assistant.

The top version adds automatic windows, a tailgate servo with memory, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, interior trim with a mixture of natural and synthetic leather, keyless entry into the cabin with push-button engine start, as well as a hill descent assistant.

The large suspension travel and rigid rear locking compensate for the less “evil” electronic imitation of inter-wheel locks than the Prado’s. And with grippy tires, the Fortuner thrives off-road, raking where there is nothing to catch on the highway. The "lower" with a number of 2.56 allows you to spin large wheels without any problems.

People are already crying about the arrival of Fortuner in Russia. rear lights its main competitor is , although it is cheaper in price. Thus, a 5-seater diesel MPS (2.4 l, 181 hp and 430 Nm) in Russia can be bought with a 6-speed manual transmission, paying 2,249,900 rubles for a car produced in 2018. Diesel variants with 8-speed automatic machine Aisin- from 2,499,990 to 2,899,990 rubles for 2018 (2017 is 50,000 rubles cheaper). All versions have Super Select II all-wheel drive and a locking rear differential.

By equipment Pajero Sport in some ways more interesting than a Toyota SUV. In it, depending on the configuration, you can get adaptive cruise control, all-round camera, monitoring of blind spots and parking exits, a frontal collision mitigation system, headlight washers, 2-zone climate control and a heated rear sofa (in addition to the existing heated steering wheel and front seats). Fortuner lacks all this.

Question from sakhalin_td

Why won't there be a 4-liter gasoline engine in Russia?

Indeed, for new Fortuner in some markets (eg the United Arab Emirates or South Africa) a 4-litre petrol V6 1GR-FE series is offered. But not in Russia: in our country such an engine is only available in the more prestigious Land Cruiser Prado, where this engine now develops a “tax” 249 hp.

The fording depth of the Fortuner is a respectable 700 mm. During the test, we dived into water above the thresholds, but the interior did not flood, the seals held.

By the way, a Prado with a V6 engine is more expensive than the diesel version, and it accounts for only about 10% of Russian sales per year. It is logical that for our market, Toyota does not want to install an unpopular engine on the more utilitarian Fortuner, thereby increasing its already considerable price. And at the same time creating an extra competitor for Prado. Marketing, in a word.

Question from santehnik0201

Will they bring a manual option?

Diesel Fortuner with 6-speed manual transmission, available in a number of world markets, we will not see in Russia yet. But in February, we already started accepting orders for Fortuners with a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline 4-cylinder engine with an output of 166 hp. and 245 Nm. And the basic version with this engine has a 5-speed manual transmission.

There are also two towing eyes at the rear. The full-size spare wheel, like on the Prado, hangs in the rear overhang.

In addition to a manual transmission, the petrol SUV also has a 6-speed automatic transmission. Production of such Fortuner for Russia will start in Thailand in February, “live” cars will appear by spring.

As expected, the petrol Fortuner turned out to be cheaper than both its diesel variant and updated Land Cruiser Prado with the same 2.7-liter engine. Thus, a Fortuner with a manual transmission will cost 1,999,000 rubles for the “Standard” version, that is, at least 250,000 rubles cheaper than the Pradika. The base includes front and knee airbags, air conditioning, fabric interior, 17-inch stamped steel wheels, halogen headlights, body-colored door handles, a light sensor, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, a rear differential lock, stability control and trailer stabilization, an initial audio system with Bluetooth and a third row of seats.

New Toyota Fortuner 2017.

For your attention, the frame Toyota Fortuner has finally reached Russia. It can be called a budget Prado - this is not entirely true. “Fortuneer,” as Toyota dubbed it for our market, is created on the Hilux platform. And, this is already the second generation of the model. The first was produced in Thailand and Kazakhstan. At that time, Toyota marketers thought that the car would not be comfortable enough for Russian buyer, so they didn’t put it on the market. By the way, the direct competitor of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is still selling well in the Russian Federation. But now everyone is listening to the marketers who put together this kind of body-on-frame crossover. The Hilux base is not expensive. If you put an attractive body, seven-seater saloon and replace the rear springs with a semi-independent suspension, the result will be a rather competitive product, and a family one at that. The idea is good, but with the current dollar exchange rate, the price tag is not at all competitive. It is expected that for the basic model assembled in Thailand, they will ask for 2.2 - 2.5 million rubles - this is at best.

What then is the difference from Pajero Sport, which starts at about the same money? The main point is the equipment and interior decoration. Even budget model, Toyota is trying to stuff modern equipment, add steel, wood. So that the person who sits in it feels more comfortable expensive car. It doesn't matter whether it's a Corolla or a RAV-4. Fortuner was no exception. They tried to squeeze the maximum “premium” value out of the salon for their money. We added a lot of plastic to look like wood and steel. The front panel and seats were covered with brown “leather”. It may smack of cheapness, but this approach is much better than open, “oak plastic”. Well, the exterior is nicer in comparison with the Pajero.

Among the options - everything a modern person needs: 7 airbags, bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, USB/AUX, seven-inch multimedia with rear view camera, keyless entry, electric. tailgate drive, light and rain sensor, 3-zone climate control, heated steering wheel and seats, assistance when ascending and descending from the mountain.

All-wheel drive is rigidly connected (Part-time). It has a low gear with a rear axle lock. The main drive is rear. The front end is switched on forcibly, up to 100 km/h. Finally, the ground clearance is 225mm. With such an arsenal, you can travel with confidence.

There are two engines to choose from: 2.7 liter petrol (163 hp) and 2.8 turbo diesel (188 hp). There are also two transmissions: six-speed hydraulic automatic or manual. Power units modest. Perhaps for our market they will borrow a 4-liter gasoline engine from the LC Prado, but who knows.

It would be good to buy such a Fortuner in Russia. After all, for reasonable (with current exchange rates) money, you will get a large, passable, well-equipped car for the whole family. And, most importantly, it is reliable and unpretentious - it's a Toyota. And, in our country, this is precisely why they love her. Therefore, the age of the buyer can be very different.

Often, automakers do not indulge the Russian market with new models, but Toyota still went all in and expanded the classic line of SUVs by presenting the utilitarian Fortuner at the Land Cruiser`s Land event. For the tests, a route was prepared in advance, which caused a lot of indignation among onlookers: “too easy”, “I have the same road to my house”, “staged performance”. Did you ask for off-road? We have it!

Video review of Toyota Fortuner

“Hello, can you tell me how to get to the waterfalls?” “But you won’t get there, we don’t even go there in the summer...”

“Where is the road to the waterfalls?” “Guys, there is no road there, don’t break the car”...

Nice route, gotta go! There really is no road to the waterfall on Kudma: a narrow track, muddy from rain and snow, among closely growing trees. Let crossovers and SUVs stand in the parking lot today, full size SUVs, alas, too. Dense vegetation simply will not allow these giants to pass between the trunks. And just right for the Fortuner.

Comparison of Toyota Fortuner with Hilux and LC Prado

Toyota Fortuner is the closest relative of the well-known Hilux. It also, like its older brother, has a Heavy Duty frame designed for severe off-road use. But Fortuner still had improvements. The first most important difference from the pickup truck was the suspension, due to which it was necessary to modernize the frame and reduce the wheelbase by 45 mm. Instead of a spring one, the “lucky” one got a spring independent five wishbone suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar.

The front suspension remained the same, it was only reconfigured for a smooth ride. This becomes noticeable from the first minutes of the trip: small imperfections in the canvas are only slightly swayed, and serious bumps do not bring the rear passengers to a state of rocking. Otherwise, he keeps the road perfectly and unquestioningly obeys his owner.

Fortuner filled a certain hollow space in the Russian market between Hilux and LC Prado. Fortuner is not as rude as a pickup truck, but not as graceful as premium SUV. The “lucky one” has its own special charm, achieved thanks to slanted headlights and streamlined body lines. The exterior was not borrowed from anyone, but family features can be recognized at a glance.

Many people try to compare the Toyota Fortuner with the Prado, some even snort that the new product costs as much as the Prado itself, and if there is no difference, then why pay more? The engine is the same as that of the Hilux and LC Prado: a 2.8-liter turbodiesel producing 177 Horse power and 450 Nm of torque, in general, nothing ordinary. Why reinvent the wheel if a more reliable “heart” cannot be found?

Now let's look at the facts: LC Prado was created for comfortable trips business people in the urban jungle, it has the appropriate suspension. Seeing the Prado, everyone immediately gets an associative line - he is wealthy and independent, he is now “primly” going to the office, but after a working day he would not mind driving along the sandy beach to the yacht club for a new portion of emotions. A Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a similar configuration will cost more expensive than Fortuner as much as 700,000 rubles. So there is a difference? Even some! Toyota Fortuner is suitable for active family people who do not want to sit still. Skiing, river rafting, trips to the mountains, all this will become possible thanks to the lucky one who has absorbed best qualities two flagships.

The best thrill in a Toyota Fortuner is driving on a broken dirt road with cruising speed. Let the weaklings slow down, the Fortuner will make its own way even where there is none. Fear, delight, horror, surprise - this is not a car, but the quintessence of feelings.

Differences between Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Now, probably, the skeptics will go into battle again - Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is cheaper and has a Super Select system. Okay, let's compare. A similar Sport package costs 2,649,990 rubles versus 2,599,000 rubles for the Fortuner. The only thing here is that the Toyota Fortuner in Russia has only two trim levels and what the Toyota people called a base with seven! In some places, Mitsu representatives consider it one of the juiciest configurations. If suddenly Toyota someday brings a really empty package that is produced in Thailand, then there will be no end to those interested. The question is, is it advisable to sacrifice your comfort?

Straight Mitsubishi competitor Pajero Sport is famous for its Super Select all-wheel drive system, Toyota Fortuner is equipped with a hard connection all-wheel drive Part Time. There are a lot of incomprehensible letters, now we’ll explain them in Russian.

Part Time or Super Select: which is better?

The transmission with Super Select has 3 differentials: between the front wheels, the center differential in the transfer case and between rear wheels. Super Select allows the use of four-wheel drive with a free center differential "4H" and with a locked center differential "4HLc" when the transmission is in four-wheel drive mode. IN Super system Select, the transfer case uses a viscous coupling, which, if used for a long time in the “4H” mode, overheats and can fail ahead of schedule.

Part Time has been around since time immemorial. It represents a diagram of the hard connection of the front axle. That is, the front and rear wheels always spin at the same speed. There is no center differential. If the car is needed mainly for off-road use, and there are no plans to use all-wheel drive on asphalt, part-time is quite justified, since one of the axles is immediately connected rigidly, and there is no need to block anything. And the design is simpler and more reliable: there is no differential or locking, no mechanical or electric drives There are no unnecessary pneumatics or hydraulics to these locks. And there is nothing to break here. Feel free to skid, accelerate and conquer passes.

Don't listen to the skeptics, listen to yourself! It was not for nothing that Saddam Hussein said that “Two things work flawlessly: the Kalashnikov assault rifle and the Toyota.”

The frame Toyota Fortuner has been a long time coming in Russia. The first generation was close, but you couldn’t bite it: the car was made in Kazakhstan, but they weren’t allowed in Russia. The second generation from 2015 arrived to us late, having been delayed for adaptation and certification for our market. What did you expect in the end? Now we'll tell you.

But first, let's deal with two important points.

Why only this way, and not otherwise, is clearly explained in our section “Let me speak.” By the way, some Russian wits have already attached to the car the nicknames “Grump” and “Fortune” (Fortuner - from the word Fortune, “fortune”)...

The second point is genealogy. Contrary to a common misconception, neither the first (2005-2015) nor the second generation Fortuner (since 2015) use the Land Cruiser Prado platform! The Fortuner, both past and present, is based on the more durable frame chassis and units of the Hilux pickup truck of the corresponding generations.

Although the platforms have differences, of course. The wheelbase of the current Fortuner (2,745 mm) is 340 mm shorter than the current generation Hilux. The pendants are also different. The shock absorbers on the Fortuner are different, with more comfortable settings. And instead of springs at the rear, there are softer springs, a stabilizer bar and other kinematics with 4 longitudinal reaction rods and one transverse one.

In addition, SUVs have different bodies, different interiors and equipment levels (Fortuner is simpler). For example, all-round cameras, front seat ventilation, 3-zone climate control, rear air suspension, adaptive and off-road cruise control, auto braking function, lane control and driver fatigue, the MTS off-road mode selection system is found in the Prado, but the more utilitarian Fortuner has "They are not derived from the word "at all".

The Prado has permanent all-wheel drive with a Torsen interaxle “self-locking” (it can be locked forcibly), while the Fortuner has a front axle that is rigidly connected by the driver (part-time scheme) only on slippery surfaces. Both SUVs have forced locking of the rear cross-axle differential.

The dimensions are also different: the Prado is 45 mm longer, 30 mm wider and 60 mm higher than the Fortuner. The Prado also has a wheelbase that is 45 mm longer and a track that is 50 mm wider. The Fortuner has more ground clearance (225 mm versus 215), but the Prado has a steeper approach angle (32 degrees versus 29), and the departure angle is parity (25 degrees).

Not really. Under the hood of the Fortuner supplied to Russia is a completely new 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel, which debuted on the current generation of the Hilux pickup truck in 2015, and was registered on the Prado in the same year. By the way, it also has a 150-horsepower younger brother, the 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV, but the Fortuner with such an engine is not yet sold in Russia, although it is available in other world markets.

The top-end 2.8-liter diesel engine has direct 5-stage fuel injection with a pressure of 2200 bar, a faster-accelerating variable geometry turbocharger and a timing chain. Recoil - 177 hp. and 450 Nm of torque, while the 3-liter predecessor had 171 “horses” and 360 Nm. The new diesel engine meets Euro-5 standards, for which a particulate filter is installed in the exhaust tract in addition to the catalyst. The gearbox for the Russian market is only a 6-speed automatic.

On the move, the diesel Prado will be quieter: in the Fortuner, the characteristic diesel growl breaks through more into the cabin, especially at high speeds during active acceleration and overtaking. As for fuel consumption, a pre-restyling diesel Prado rode with us in the convoy. In the city-highway-off-road mode, according to the on-board computer, the Fortuner got 12.5-13.1 l/100 km, the Prado - 13.4-14.1 l/100 km. The fuel tank of the Fortuner is 80 liters, the Prado - 87.

In terms of performance figures, the Fortuner is also faster than the Prado: a top speed of 180 km/h versus 175, and acceleration to 100 km/h for the diesel Fortuner takes 11.2 seconds versus 12.7 for the Prado.

In tests of SUVs, the journalistic fraternity often writes that they say that this car would have had “toothier” tires. Toyota clearly heard these calls and changed the shoes of the test cars, replacing the standard road tires with more “evil” Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac AT tires in the serial size 265/60 R18 (these are standard on the top-end “Prestige” configuration, which was tested). And since we had to drive on icy roads, these tires were also studded.

If potholes and gullies come in succession, then at a good speed the suspension does not have time to work out the movement of the heavy wheels - and the Fortuner, trembling all over, begins to “swim”, especially astern.

And Fortuner, even in expensive trim levels, is cheaper, especially when comparing diesel versions of SUVs!

The starting price also includes LED foglights and headlights (low/high), running boards, 1-zone climate control and a second air conditioner for the rear rows, a cooled/heated glove compartment, cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel with steering wheel paddles, power windows and folding mirrors, a rear view camera with parking sensors, light and tire pressure sensors and a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen and 6 speakers. Safety is ensured by 7 airbags, car and trailer stabilization systems, and a hill start assistant.

The top version adds automatic windows, a tailgate servo with memory, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, interior trim with a mixture of natural and synthetic leather, keyless access to the cabin with push-button engine start, and a hill descent assistant.

Regarding the arrival of the Fortuner in Russia, its main competitor, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, is already crying with its taillights, although it is cheaper in price. Thus, a 5-seater diesel MPS (2.4 l, 181 hp and 430 Nm) in Russia can be bought with a 6-speed manual transmission, paying 2,249,900 rubles for a car produced in 2018. Diesel options with an 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission - from 2,499,990 to 2,899,990 rubles for 2018 (2017 is 50,000 rubles cheaper). All versions have Super Select II all-wheel drive and a locking rear differential.

In terms of equipment, the Pajero Sport is somewhat more interesting than the Toyota SUV. In it, depending on the configuration, you can get adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, blind spot and parking exit monitoring, a frontal collision mitigation system, headlight washers, 2-zone climate control and a heated rear seat (in addition to available heated steering wheel and front seats). Fortuner lacks all this.

Indeed, the new Fortuner is offered with a 4-litre 1GR-FE series V6 petrol in some markets (eg the United Arab Emirates or South Africa). But not in Russia: in our country such an engine is only available in the more prestigious Land Cruiser Prado, where this engine now develops a “tax” 249 hp.

The diesel Fortuner with a 6-speed manual transmission, available in a number of world markets, we will not see in Russia yet. But in February, we already started accepting orders for Fortuners with a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline 4-cylinder engine with an output of 166 hp. and 245 Nm. And the basic version with this engine has a 5-speed manual transmission.

In addition to a manual transmission, the petrol SUV also has a 6-speed automatic transmission. Production of such Fortuner for Russia will start in Thailand in February, “live” cars will appear by spring.

As expected, the petrol Fortuner turned out to be cheaper than both its diesel version and the updated Land Cruiser Prado with the same 2.7-liter engine. Thus, a Fortuner with a manual transmission will cost 1,999,000 rubles for the “Standard” version, that is, at least 250,000 rubles cheaper than the Pradika. The base includes front and knee airbags, air conditioning, fabric interior, 17-inch stamped steel wheels, halogen headlights, door handles in body color, light sensor, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, rear cross-axle differential lock, directional stability and trailer stabilization system, an entry-level Bluetooth audio system and third-row seating.

A petrol Fortuner with an automatic transmission costs 2,349,000 rubles, that is, 299,000 rubles cheaper than a Prado with the same combination. There are already 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, rear parking sensors with a rear view camera, a heated leather multifunction steering wheel, side airbags and curtain airbags, heated front seats, a media system with a 7-inch screen and 6 speakers, and luggage rails on the roof.
