Coming out of the entrance of my house in Moscow, I found six crossovers from well-known Japanese, South Korean and European companies parked in a row in front of it. Test FAW Besturn I left the X80 behind the house, in the yard, but it happened by accident, there just wasn’t a free one on the “first line” parking space. Its design is not at all objectionable, and the X-shaped intersection of the upper and lower chrome edges of the side windows, which turns into the contour of the trunk door, seems to me to be simply a unique element. The FAW crossover can be unmistakably recognized by it.

On a proven chassis

This “unit” migrated from the first generation car (produced since 2013) to the updated version, sales of which began in China back in 2016, but here only now, at the end of 2018. No matter how unique the design move is, a breakthrough on Russian market he did not provide a car. The emblem of FAW, historically the first Chinese automobile plant that began its activities with the production of licensed Soviet trucks in the 50s of the last century, has not yet become familiar on our roads. Attempts to start selling passenger cars with us - small cars V2 and V5, as well as mid-size Besturn sedan The B50, based on the first-generation Mazda6, was essentially a failure. The body is quite nice in appearance, vaguely reminiscent of the models Infiniti, Lexus, Mazda, and, in fact, “all the shepherd dogs at once.” The “Mazda” platform, although not the newest, is the one that provided the Japanese “six” with its current success, and it was where it all began. Let's take a look inside and immediately stop our gaze at the vertically mounted 8-inch display on the dashboard. Previously, it was not there; the multimedia system was integrated into the panel and, frankly speaking, did not look particularly attractive. Now it's a different matter. Bright colors that do not fade in daylight. Touch control. Intuitive logic... although not for all functions. It was not possible to connect the smartphone right away, which was also affected by the lack of instructions in the test car. But in the future, the connection between the two devices was stably maintained.

However, the FAW Besturn X80 multimedia system does not offer many functions. Don't be fooled by the number of icons on the screen. Two of them are “idle”: one does not work at all, the other seems to be some kind of national Chinese application that is not supported by our smartphones. There is no navigation. The picture from the rear view camera is average, but with dynamic guides. I specially photographed it in the dark - it seems to me that it deserves a “four”. Parking sensors are only in the rear, but the front one would be very useful here, since the hood is long. Front overhang too.

Yes, and one more thing: the system is not Russified. The “set” only includes Chinese and English. But the on-board computer “speaks” (or rather, “writes”) in Russian, almost one hundred percent correctly. Some of our words barely even fit into the screen on the dashboard, for example, “stop reminding.” There are many different “reminders” here, in particular, the system recognizes the driver’s fatigue, offers to rest, and displays a cup of coffee (or Chinese tea?). You can follow her advice or remove the warning from the screen.

With a “ragged” rhythm of driving along the highway, with sharp decelerations, overtaking and accelerations of up to 150 km/h, fuel consumption increases to 8.2 - 8.6 liters per 100 km. In the city, in traffic-free mode, it slightly exceeded 9 liters. Average gas tank volume: 64 liters. The gasoline used is 92nd grade.

You can get a good job behind the wheel, although adjusting the steering wheel for reach would not hurt here (only the steering wheel height adjustment is offered). The buttons on the steering wheel fit comfortably under your fingers. By the way, the set of buttons is quite rich - there are four groups of them. And although the INFO button, which opens travel information, is for some reason included in the block of smartphone control buttons, nevertheless, it is not difficult to understand the control of the bookmaker. Again, let's take this into account in the absence of factory instructions.

The 4.6-meter body offers spacious interior. Its width at the front is 143 cm, at the rear - 134 cm, which is not enough, but this is the distance between the sides of the body protruding into the cabin. If you measure the distance between the rear passenger doors, it will be more than centimeters, but they will not be entirely fair, since the rear passengers will not “get it”. Their hips and shoulders will rest not against the doors, but against the sides of the body.

The space when landing “behind me” is 33 cm, a very good indicator! But rear passengers They do not have a 12-volt outlet or a USB connector, and the air ducts of the heating and ventilation system are not directed towards them. This is not very modern, even for the “Chinese”.

Parts of the back of the rear sofa can be easily folded, significantly increasing the luggage compartment, which is not too large in nominal terms (398 l). The full-size spare wheel in its depths is a plus, but the very flimsy plastic false floor panel is definitely a minus. I wanted to transport something heavy with this car. economic purposes, but, frankly speaking, I was afraid for the integrity of this part.

The length of the trunk of the FAW Besturn X80 along the floor is “nominally” 95 cm, with the parts of the back of the rear sofa folded - 184 cm. The height under the sliding curtain is 47 cm, the minimum width of the “hold” (between the facings wheel arches) - cm.

Break through the "wall"

Let's continue to abstract from Chinese emblem on the run. How does the “celestial” crossover drive, is it worthy of comparison with classmates from Europe, Japan, and Korea?

Yes and no. From the very beginning of the movement, the noise in the cabin begins to be annoying. And not only aggregate or aerodynamic. Here and there crickets and knocking sounds “wake up”. It's a real shame for the generally well-assembled interior. I found one loosely fitting part almost immediately: it was a small plastic corner in the area of ​​the driver’s left leg. But it wasn’t the corner that mattered; even being practically unsecured, it didn’t knock.

Maybe the hood was to blame? Having opened and slammed it, I felt that it had a fair amount of play. I tightened the rubber stops - the play disappeared, but the clattering noise in the cabin remained. It seemed to come from somewhere behind. I even looked under the body - no, everything was in order there. I discovered the “culprit” by accident - it turned out to be a plastic trim on the top of the trunk door from the inside. Conventionally, behind it there was an additional, upper brake signal.

An unassuming owner may not even pay attention to these sounds. A more meticulous one will disassemble the interior and glue the interior trim panels with noise and vibration insulation sheets. It won't cost much, but I'm sure it will bring tangible benefits.

Under the hood of the FAW Besturn X80 there can only be a non-alternative two-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 142 hp. With. A completely modern unit, judging by its environmental standard (Euro 5). But there are two transmission options. For the “junior” configuration, Basic, a six-speed manual transmission is offered, for the “senior”, Luxury, either the same “mechanics” or a six-speed automatic transmission.

We tested the "automatic" version. And we were convinced that she was tearing up - God forbid. As they would say today - “fire”. Alas, only in the subjunctive mood. In fact, the ardor of the crossover subsides very quickly, moreover, having reached the level of 2500-2800 rpm, the tachometer needle seems to rest against an invisible wall. It rests so firmly that if you don’t press the gas pedal, nothing will happen. The engine speed seems to freeze, the car refuses to accelerate.

Fortunately, the crossover automatic has additional modes work, and in sports (S) you can overcome the “wall”, forcing the tachometer needle to jump to 3000 rpm and above - and then things will go further. Acceleration will become much more confident.

The technical specifications confirm: this motor has a high-speed character. Maximum torque (184 Nm) occurs at 4000 rpm, maximum power at 6500 rpm. But nothing is said about the “wall”, as well as about its “overcoming”. In practice, overclocking is best done this way. At 100-110 km/h and 2000 rpm, we switch the box to S mode, and the revolutions will increase by about 500 units. Not reaching the 3000 mark? This means there will be no spurt. We persistently, stubbornly increase the speed to 2500-2700, again engage the S mode, jump the bar to 3000 rpm - and here it is, acceleration has begun! For some reason, the manufacturer does not provide acceleration times from zero to 100 km/h. I think it's about 12s.

Paradoxically, the measurements show that acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h when using modes D and S occurs in approximately the same 11-12 seconds. The sport mode does not provide any obvious benefit. What about manual gear selection mode? The fourth stage provides the same acceleration (in time) as automatic modes. But at the third stage things turned out to be better. The tachometer needle confidently crawled up and entered the red zone at the same moment when the speedometer needle showed 120 km/h. In this situation, the box automatically switched to a higher gear, but I managed to visually record the acceleration result: 9 seconds.

It was noticed that when using the manual gear selection mode, the “failed” speed zone was overcome faster than in automatic modes. Use fourth or fifth gear, even in the city, and you will be happy.

In general, the machine selects steps smoothly, almost imperceptibly. I liked it, and not only me. People who approached me in parking lots were pleasantly surprised that FAW had a machine gun. We also paid attention to the central display of the multimedia system. They asked about other nuances of the car. First of all, of course, about reliability and durability. Unfortunately, during our tests we life tests We don’t. Ask questions about the structure, design, behavior of certain units and systems - we will be happy to answer. But we don’t know how long it will last.

Difference between average and cruise speed

What else does the new FAW Besturn X80 please? Among other things - a cruise control system. There is nothing complicated in using it; the buttons are located on the steering wheel. I’m trying to set the value to “120 km/h” on the motorway - but it doesn’t work! Why? Yes, because the “cruise” here is too precise; when you press the SET button, it selects values ​​with tenths. For example, “117.4”, “118.5”, “119.8”... Try to hit “120” exactly here. Moreover, the tenths change if you disable and re-enable cruise. So the system actually measures the speed, and does not offer some deeply recorded values ​​​​from its memory.

Fuel consumption turned out to be very gentle. In mode D, I set the “cruise” to 110 km/h and measure the car’s appetite over ten kilometers (almost flat highway, without noticeable ups and downs). The result is 7.2 liters per hundred. BUT: the on-board computer shows an average speed of only 102 km/h. What to believe - “cruise” or BC? Something is clearly not working correctly. Logically, during cruise operation, engine speed and fuel consumption may change, but the speed must remain constant. And here…

I try the same test in S mode. Consumption increases slightly, to 7.6 liters per hundred. And more clearly: on an ascent, the engine speed increases from 2800 to 4000, another 0.2 liters is added to the accumulated 7.6 - quite logical. Then the road levels out, and over a ten-kilometer stretch we get an average result of 7.6 liters. BUT: average speed at the same time - again, it’s different, only 106 km/h.

Are Chinese instruments inaccurate? To be fair, it must be said that such discrepancies also occur among other manufacturers, in particular Japanese ones. Only the American Chevrolet Traverse and the South Korean Hyundai H-1 turned out to be standards in this regard. How many kilometers per hour were recorded when the “cruise” was turned on, the same amount was “brought” by their BC.

Sometimes the dashboard lights up green indicator ESO. I'm trying to determine the algorithm for its appearance - what driving mode does the car consider environmentally friendly? So, you should keep the speed below 2500 and the instantaneous consumption within 11 liters per hundred. The on-board computer shows everything as clearly as possible.

On high speeds the general noise of the units actively penetrates into salon FAW. By 120 km/h you are already talking to the front passenger in a raised voice. Is it possible to drown out noise with music? Yes, it's even worth doing. Because the potential of the audio system is revealed at approximately half the volume. The reproduced frequency band becomes wider. Although the music is non-name, no famous brand is registered on the speakers.

Directional stability the Chinese crossover is relatively high, but at high speeds (150 km/h) it decreases. In addition, the car is sensitive to gusts of side wind. The steering wheel is not very light, but not very precise either. The Besturn X80 cannot be called a standard of handling, but it is also a “failure”; in this regard, the average model will suit most drivers.

Suspension? On “little things” it is perceived as hard, but on significant irregularities it seems to “soften”. You can safely roll on a primer with large “waves”, without rocking or grinding, but on a “washboard” left crawler tractor, the movement will be harsh. In addition, the salon will sound with all its “fibres”.

The ground clearance of the Besturn X80 is stated at 190 mm, but our measurements showed that there are lower points. Yes, under the lower fastenings rear shock absorbers(they are located below the levers rear suspension) only 16.5 cm, under the bend of the exhaust pipe 18 cm, under the plastic shields in front of the front wheels also 18 cm. But protection engine compartment(metal) is 25 cm from the ground, good. The measurements were carried out on a flat asphalt area and on an unloaded vehicle.

It’s not worth going deep off-road on the FAW Besturn X80. It has only front-wheel drive, and the characteristics of the motor are not conducive to “crawl”. It’s not easy to dose thrust at the very bottom of the rev range; if you go a little too far, the crossover will try to “shoot” (and therefore dig in). This inconvenience was noticeable even on minimal uneven surfaces covered with wet grass. In addition, the car has a long front overhang, and on one of the mini-lifts it almost hit the ground with its bumper (see photo).

Stabilization system in in this case had to turn it off. She showed herself “negatively”, that is, she prevented the rise. In theory, it worked correctly. She also provided timely support for the driver when accelerating on a sandy road. ABS was also tested on it, for which the car also deserves a plus.

And in general, perhaps, we can say that it has more advantages than disadvantages. But you can purchase them only by abstracting from the Chinese origin of the crossover. And, of course, subject to reliable service support.

The 2018 FAW Besturn X80 is offered on the Russian market in two trim levels - Basic and Luxury. Thanks to the restyling of the FAU Besturn 2018, it looks more impressive than its pre-reform brother and is really capable of attracting interested glances. You can note the elegant shape of the headlight optics with stylish internal filling, a monumental aluminum radiator grille, a sloping roof that smoothly merges into the rear, and two voluminous exhaust pipes.

Sloping bumpers made of black plastic increase the approach angle to the hill, which, coupled with the 190 mm ground clearance, is very important on light off-road conditions.

Inner space

The interior is decorated with good materials - the plastic is soft, the pseudo-aluminum inserts look believable, and the eco-leather does not wear out. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are also tolerable and do not cause any special complaints.

Analog dashboard with clear digitization, white backlighting, excellent readability in any lighting, quite informative. But the eight-inch diagonal display of the multimedia and entertainment system can glare in the sun, making it difficult to read. In addition, it awkwardly sticks out from the dashboard, which does not contribute to harmony in its design.

The front seats, with their plump shoulder areas, are too flat, so finding a comfortable seating position while sitting in them is not an easy task.

The width of the second-row sofa is generous even for three passengers and offers a noticeable amount of knee space, but tall passengers (over 180 centimeters) will certainly feel the lack of headroom. The volume luggage compartment is 398 liters - an acceptable figure for an urban SUV.

Rideability

Sales of this model on the Russian market clearly cannot be called impressive, but nevertheless, there are still buyers for the products of this Chinese manufacturing company, and therefore it is worth taking a closer look at its new version.

The restyled version of the FAW Besturn X80 has not changed so much - rather cosmetically - and therefore one cannot expect any special changes in appearance. But there is no sign of stinginess of change here either - the car has a significantly modified front end with an enlarged false radiator grille (although its dimensions are not large, but for models previous generation auto this element was even smaller), narrower head lights and an updated bumper with located fog lights in sections specially designated for them. The appearance of the hood was also changed - now it has become more presentable.

The rear of the car has a new look side lights(with LED inserts), a modified trunk door (first of all, the changes affected the design of its appearance itself), as well as an updated appearance of the bumper with rounded exhaust pipes. From the side, the first thing that catches your eye is the roundness of the car's roof, but it is worth noting that in reality its slope is not so sloping - it's all about the chrome lining, which creates a similar visual effect. That is why it seems that the roof has a very rounded shape. Compared to the overall massiveness of the body, the car's wheels inside the large wheel arches seem small.

In general, the appearance of the FAW Besturn X80 speaks of the seriousness and presentability of the model. At the same time, the creators tried to produce as much as possible quality car for its price niche - and they succeeded, because for their money the crossover offers maximum comfort, convenience and reliability.

Inside, buyers will expect even fewer changes, but there are still some. First of all, you should pay attention to the new dashboard, which has become more informative. It is also worth noting changes in the appearance of the control panels for the audio installation, air conditioning (or climate control - depending on the configuration, respectively). Perhaps, with the exception of small details, this is where the changes end.

But it is worth noting that for Chinese motorists the car will be equipped with a horizontally mounted touch display 12 inches in size (while the Russian market will receive models with an 8-inch screen).

The restyled version of the Chinese crossover received the following overall dimensions:

The manufacturing company did not announce small details, but did make the basic information public. It is known that the basic configuration will be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, and models for the Russian market will be equipped less richly than Chinese cars.

The starting version will be equipped with: two front airbags, slip and hill start assistance systems, heated front seats, electric drive parking brake, rear parking sensors, fabric seat trim; air conditioning, four electric windows, electric seats and side mirrors.

The next configuration (it is also the maximum, because the manufacturer has allocated only two configurations for this model) will receive: seats trimmed with eco-leather, a rear view camera, a roof hatch with a sunroof and electrically controlled the latter, cruise and climate controls. The difference in the diameter of the screens located on the center console for the Russian and Chinese versions of the FAW Besturn X80 was announced above - it just applies to the maximum configuration.

For buyers from Russia, the crossover will be equipped with only one power unit– 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol with a volume of 2 liters, which at its peak will produce 143 horsepower and 185 Nm. But it will be equipped with 6-speed gearboxes: manual and automatic. This model has only front-wheel drive. Another engine will be available for Chinese buyers – a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine with a capacity of 185 horses (236 Nm). In the latter case, the engine is equipped only automatic transmission(6-speed). Chinese versions are also completely front-wheel drive, without the ability to connect the rear wheels.

Despite the proximity of the start date of sales of the car in Russia, its price has not yet been announced. According to analytical calculations, the price tag for the basic FAW package Besturn X80 will cost approximately 1,000,000 rubles. However, there is no reliable data confirming or refuting this information yet. But there is very little time left to wait, and soon the manufacturer will announce exact prices for the versions.

First ever Chinese automaker The SUV was presented to the world community in April 2013 at the stands of the international Shanghai auto show, and the following month its sales began at Chinese market. This car, by the way, built on the basis of the first generation Mazda 6, reached Russia only four years later - in April 2017 (and in a pre-restyling form).

In September 2016, the FAW Besturn X80 underwent a planned modernization (but before Russian buyers in this form it “arrived” only in July 2018) - the SUV was “refreshed” in appearance, becoming even more similar to Infiniti models, acquired a seriously redesigned interior and received new equipment, but at the same time retained technical part without any changes.

In general, the appearance of the crossover is quite modern, attractive, but separate elements clearly looks like the Infiniti FX (first generation) and Mazda CX-5 (also the first).

The front part of the FAW Besturn X80 is decorated with complex headlights with LED “eyebrows” of running lights, an impressive “hexagon” radiator grille and a massive bumper, and its lean rear flaunts nice lighting equipment and a pair of round pipes exhaust system sticking out from under the bumper.

However, the car looks most advantageous in profile - just look at the littered outlines of the roof, the line of the “window sill” soaring towards the rear part and the relief swells of the wheel arches, which together give the appearance a dynamic and fit look.

The body length of the Besturn X80 is 4620 mm, the wheelbase reaches 2675 mm, the width is 1820, and the height is 1695 mm. The track width of the front and rear wheels is 1580 mm, the indicator ground clearance crossover does not exceed 190 mm, and the approach/departure angle (respectively) is 26 and 27 degrees.

The curb weight of the car varies from 1500 to 1570 kg, depending on the configuration.

The interior of the FAW Besturn X80 looks attractive and modern, and in addition to this, it can boast of high-quality ergonomics and a high-quality level of performance (soft and hard plastics are combined inside). In the driver’s immediate field of view is a weighty three-spoke multi-steering wheel and a dashboard designed with a hint of sportiness, flaunting a pair of dials and a color display of the on-board computer between them. The nice and laconic central console is decorated with a protruding 8-inch “tablet” of the multimedia system and convenient radio and “microclimate” units.

The front seats are comfortable enough for driving around the city, but when driving for a long time, the load on the back is noticeably noticeable. On back row it is much more comfortable to sit, but only if you are short (tall passengers here will rest their heads on the sloping roof).

The situation is somewhat corrected by the back of the rear sofa, divided into two unequal sections, which folds almost flush with the floor, thereby increasing the volume of the “hold” by more than three times.

On the Russian market, FAW Besturn X80 is offered with one gasoline engine– this is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine (meeting Euro-5 environmental standards) CA4GD1 with an in-line layout, distributed injection fuel and 16-valve timing system DOHC type. It maximally develops 142 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 184 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, and is mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and an exclusively front-wheel drive transmission.

How agile the crossover is in accelerating from zero to the first “hundred” is not reported. The maximum “Chinese” can accelerate to 180-185 km/h, and its fuel consumption varies from 8.2 to 8.6 liters in combined mode, depending on the type of gearbox. The gas tank capacity of the SUV is 64 liters.

The FAW Besturn X80 city SUV is built on the Mazda 6 (first generation) platform, which the Chinese have slightly altered “to their standards.” The front of the car rests on an independent structure with MacPherson struts, a stabilizer and double wishbones. Rear end The body is supported by an E-type multi-link design with an anti-roll bar.
