Goodyear where tires are made. How tires are made. Why factories are being transferred to other countries

The brand has long become synonymous with high-quality car tires in the eyes of a wide range of consumers. Today, Goodyear is the world's largest manufacturer of rubber products with an annual turnover of over $ 15 billion. The company has a wide production base on six continents, test sites and research centers. Goodyear tires can now be seen almost anywhere in the world. But it all started with a small enterprise with a staff of only 13 people ...

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was founded in 1898 by 38-year-old Frank Seiberling, who bought a small factory on the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River with money borrowed from his brother-in-law. The company got its name in honor of Charles Goodyear, who discovered the process of "vulcanization" - a new way of producing rubber. The company first produced bicycle and carriage tires, horse shoe pads, canning o-rings, and even poker chips.

Frank Seiberling chose the trademark of the company in the form of the feet of the god Mercury, which remains an integral part of the Goodyear logo to this day. In 1901, Seiberling offered Henry Ford tires for a new racing car. As a result, Goodyear tires were first used in car racing at the very beginning of the 20th century. Two years later, a patent was obtained for the first tubeless tire for a car.

In 1908, Goodyear began producing tires for the Model T, Ford's first mass-produced vehicle. Thanks to a significant increase in sales, Goodyear has been able to establish production outside the United States in Bowmanville, Canada. In addition to car tires, Goodyear began developing and manufacturing aircraft tires. In 1911, aircraft tires of this brand were used on the first transcontinental flight from Long Beach, Long Island, New York to Long Beach, California.

In 1912, an overseas office was opened in London and thus the expansion of the company into Europe began. A year later, the first conveyor belt is produced at Goodyear. During this period, a unique slogan was already adopted - "Goodyear tires are used more than any other manufacturer's tires."

In the 1920s, Goodyear developed into the world's leading rubber manufacturer. Back in 1921, it launched the first off-road tire called the Rut-Proof. A little later, the world's first all-season tire with a racing tread pattern for passenger transport was introduced.

With the opening of its first tire plant in Europe (in Wolverhampton, England), Goodyear has become the largest tire manufacturer with an annual turnover of over $ 230,000. By the way, at the same time, the company was also engaged in the construction of airships, having concluded a lucrative contract with the US Navy.

In 1934, the Lifeguard tire entered the market, which was designed to provide additional stability on the road in the event of a tire burst. In the 1930s, Goodyear began developing and testing a tire made from a synthetic material that was nearly identical to natural rubber. In 1939, the Goodyear molded rubber factory was built.

The most important event in the history of the company's development was the opening of a large research center in 1943. By the way, the research and development of Goodyear scientists and specialists later found their application not only in car tires, but also in medicine, food packaging and other areas. After World War II, the company launched a new chemical plant in Niagara Falls and developed the first nylon tires. Thanks to the advertising of its products on television, Goodyear increased sales and in 1951 managed to earn its first billion dollars. In the same year, the company's European plant produced the 500 millionth tire under the Goodyear brand.

The 50s and 60s also marked Goodyear's excellence in the American and European tire markets. In 1962, a chemical plant was opened in Le Havre, France, which began to provide the production of raw materials for the European divisions. Very quickly, the company reached another historic milestone - the billionth tire left the assembly line of one of Goodyear's European factories.

Craig Breedlove hit 600 mph in 1964 in his Spirit of America fitted with Goodyear tires. Goodyear also saw another landmark event - in 1970, Goodyear XLT tires were used on MET equipment for the Apollo 14 space expedition on a modular vehicle.

Goodyear becomes not only a leading synthetic rubber company, but also the largest manufacturer of so-called polybutadiene rubber. Goodyear's range of tire models and applications are expanding rapidly. And now giant excavators are equipped with the largest tires in the world, reaching 11 1/2 feet in height.

In the 1970s, the company began manufacturing rubber hoses for industrial use and was even involved in the development of an experimental air-driven artificial heart. In the global tire market, Goodyear introduces the first all-season radial tire, the Tiempo model. The company also finds use for its old tires - as a building material for the creation of artificial reefs and floating breakwaters.

Over the next decade, Goodyear launched its new line of high-performance tires called the Eagle, which has become very popular. In 1983, the company celebrates another anniversary - the release of its three billionth tire. Goodyear is also introducing the ZR-S high speed tire in the Z speed category, which is designed to operate at speeds in excess of 149 mph.

For Eagle tires, the company's engineers subsequently developed SIBR synthetic rubber, which can improve the thermal resistance of the tire. A new dedicated polymer plant opens in Beaumont, Texas to manufacture this synthetic rubber.

In the 90s, a huge number of new products and innovations were released under the Goodyear brand. These include the Lifetime Warranty Infinitred tire and the Goodyear GS-C EMT tire with revolutionary extended mobility technology. The company begins its expansion into Asian markets by opening its first tire plant in China in 1993. It also becomes the first tire company in the world to present an electronic store on its official website.

In 1998, Goodyear introduces the new IMPACT (Integrated Modular Precision Assembly) technology at its manufacturing facility, which marks a whole new stage in the tire manufacturing process. Thanks to this advanced technology, the company has been able to achieve a nearly 2-fold reduction in its Tire Manufacturing Costs.

The following year, Goodyear forms a strategic alliance with Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd to obtain the rights to the Dunlop tire brand. From this point onwards, Goodyear's continued expansion into the Myrrh markets begins with joint ventures and representative offices in Japan, North America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Goodyear expands its range of tires to the Aquatred range, where great emphasis has been placed on providing wet and dry grip, improved handling, ride comfort and rubber durability.

In 2002, the Goodyear Eagle F1 received the most rave reviews from experts and became the leader in the Evo magazine test. With the launch of the new online service, TireManager, numerous Goodyear customers and customers now have quick access to the information they need to find the right tires for their vehicle. In 2004, Goodyear introduced the HydraGrip and UltraGrip 6 tires with improved safety, control, handling and traction on a variety of surfaces. Now, almost every year, consumers expect new products from Goodyear, based on groundbreaking technology and innovation. xannonce.ch

Thus, in 2005, the Excellence tires were released, guaranteeing safer driving, superior handling and comfort characteristics. Goodyear then introduced the Eagle F1 Asymmetric high-speed tire and OptiGrip tires with Smartwear's unique smart wear technology, which reopens new grooves and tread compound over time. In 2009, the company launched the EfficientGrip tire, which helps reduce fuel consumption without compromising safety performance. And in 2010 Goodyear announced the development of an innovative tire made from renewable biomass.

Thus, the Goodyear brand boasts more than a century of history, thousands of completed technological projects, successful discoveries and improvements. Goodyear is the world's largest tire company today. Its long-term success is based on innovation, a continuous stream of new creative ideas and materials. With a strong manufacturing and R&D base, Goodyear is always ready to offer high quality products to meet the needs of the most discerning customers in various regions of the world.

In the past few years, one of the most important criteria when deciding whether to buy a particular tire model has become the country of its production. One of the reasons is the price difference. So, the price for the same tire model, in the same size, can differ significantly depending on the country of its production. Another reason is prestige.

Many drivers, especially the older generation, still believe that quality tires can only be made in Germany or Japan. And when they find out that, for example, their chosen Goodyear is made in Turkey, Bridgestone in Indonesia, and Michelin in Thailand, they often refuse to buy. They can be understood, they are used to thinking in clichés since the times of the Soviet Union.

However, time does not stand still, we live in a world of transnational corporations and global brands. Globalization, the highest level of competition among manufacturers and the struggle for every buyer - this is the reason for the current situation. In an effort to lower prices for the end customer, manufacturers are moving their factories to countries with cheaper labor. At the same time, such rubber will be sold all over the world, therefore, its quality must be at its best, otherwise the credibility of the brand will be irretrievably lost. Trust, brand loyalty is the basis of sales. Conclusion - the quality of the product should not depend on the place of its production. This is confirmed in practice, the defective tires (well-known brands) of European production are no less than those of Asian ones.

The following brands of automotive rubber are presented on the Ukrainian market by country of production. The list is far from complete, but it gives some idea.

Imagine a situation, Michelin or Goodyear, it doesn't matter, built a new plant in China, spent several hundred million dollars on it and began to produce low quality tires under its own brand (after all, it is known that all goods made in China are of poor quality ;)). Then “he” sends this rubber to Europe and America in order to “discourage” local consumers from buying goods of his brand. Strange, isn't it?

Conclusion. Perhaps it is worthwhile to think a little and reconsider some of the stereotypes in our thinking.

How to buy?

You can buy tires by placing an order by phone

Self-pickup in Dnipro- Having decided on the choice, just agree on the time of your arrival.

Delivery in Ukraine- Intime and New Mail, payment upon receipt (cash on delivery).

Minimum tread height

The height (or depth) of the tread has a decisive influence on the tire's ability to maintain the required level of grip on wet or snowy surfaces.

All tires wear out over time. The question arises - what is the maximum permissible minimum tread height?

Country of production of the tire

In the past few years, one of the most important criteria when deciding whether to buy a particular tire model has become the country of its production.

One of the reasons is the price difference. So, the price for the same tire model can differ significantly depending on the country of its production.

In the era of globalization, it becomes difficult to understand where these tires are produced. For light truck tires that carry very tangible loads, information about the manufacturer's plant is very relevant. The brand of a tire speaks only of its belonging to a particular corporation, but if you want to find out in which country the tire was manufactured, then the information presented below will help you.

Goodyear tires are among the top five leaders in the global tire market. The history of the company began over a century ago in Ohio, USA. Today Goodyear tires represent a multinational brand. The USA, as a traditional country of manufacture, indicated on tires, gave way to dozens of branches of the brand in Europe and Asia. The brand owns several dozen of its own patented technologies used in rubber.

Goodyear tire technology

The Goodyear brand uses in-house engineering resources to apply the latest tire technologies:

  • RunOnFlat is a technology that allows you to use a punctured wheel for about 80 km more, thanks to the rigid sidewall frame. So the manufacturer is trying to save the driver from the dangerous procedure of replacing tires on the side of the road.
  • ActiveBraking is a technology based on the use of a three-dimensional pattern of tread blocks, which increases the contact patch at the time of braking. As a result, the braking distance on any surface is significantly reduced.
  • WearControl is a two-component rubber compound. To improve the wear resistance in Goodyear rubber, two mixtures are used. This technology strikes a balance between good rolling resistance and wet stability.
  • FuelSaving is a technology to reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the tire, using its optimal shape in combination with the latest tread materials. In proportion to the reduction in rolling resistance, the level of harmful emissions and fuel consumption are reduced.
  • Active CornerGrip provides tire stability when cornering. Strong sidewall distributes pressure evenly to all tread blocks, thereby improving rubber handling.
  • SilentArmor - Kevlar cords provide handling on poor road surfaces.
  • SmartWear is a technology that maintains performance as the tires wear out. Under the top layer of the tread, as it wears, additional sipes are found, which guarantee handling in the rain and grip on wet roads.
  • SmartTRED is a technology that allows you to use tires all year round. Adaptation to different climatic conditions is ensured by the use of tread blocks with different characteristics.
  • MultiControl Ice for winter tires is a fastening technology and stud geometry that improves its interaction with icy surfaces.
  • 3D-BIS - technology for locking the tread blocks for greater rigidity. It enhances control and driving comfort on any surface.

Goodyear can surprise the car owner with a dozen more different technologies designed to improve the driving characteristics of tires. The brand is one of the few imported manufacturers that once offered truly all-season tires. Today Goodyear can offer the consumer tires for any car.

Popular models of Goodyear tires

Of greatest interest to the domestic motorist are Goodyear passenger and off-road tires. The passenger car tire range is divided into summer and winter tires.

From the summer models, the buyers' preference is given. The minimum price of tires is 5830 rubles for the 17th radius. The maximum cost of rubber exceeds 22,000 rubles. Goodyear Eagle F1 tires are available in 17 to 20 radius sizes. The maximum speed index is 300 km / h. Among the advantages are controllability, grip, braking, wear, noise, aquaplaning, strong sidewall. Among the shortcomings, buyers named the price and the shortage of tires in the retail network.

A model has been singled out from the line of passenger car tires for middle class cars. Tires are produced in sizes from 14 to 18 diameters. The minimum price for Goodyear tires of this model is 1710 rubles. The average cost is about 5,000 rubles. Tires in the 18th radius can be bought for 8000-9000 rubles. Customer reviews noted softness and lack of noise. Among the shortcomings, a weak sidewall is named, prone to cuts and the appearance of bumps.

It is the most popular among winter models. This studded rubber is produced in radii from 13th to 17th. You can buy tires of this model from 1900 rubles on the Internet. The average cost of a wheel is 4800 rubles. Reviews of Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic tires are overwhelmingly positive. The advantages are: good stud attachment, softness and grip on any winter surface. Among the shortcomings, the price and a very weak sidewall are highlighted.

The second most popular winter tire is the non-studded model. It is also available in 13 to 17 radius sizes. The minimum price of rubber for this model is 1350 rubles. Buy Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice + in the 15th radius will start from 2,200 rubles. Among the advantages are noise, handling on snow and in a slush, confident behavior on dry and wet roads, lack of aquaplaning, wear and tear. Among the shortcomings named rut and unsure behavior on ice.

In the off-road tire lineup, buyers have highlighted. Tires are manufactured in sizes from radius 15 to 17. The minimum price is 3700 rubles. On average, you need to spend 5700 rubles for this model. The maximum cost can reach 9,200 rubles. 90% of buyers were completely satisfied with their tires. Among the advantages were named off-road patency, confident behavior on the surface, price, self-cleaning, wear. Among the shortcomings highlighted the loss of control in clay and liquid mud. Puncture resistance due to the use of Kevlar in the composition is also noted as an advantage.

How tires are made

Manufacturing process:

Mixture

The rubber compound from which the tire is made contains up to 30 components. They are mixed in giant mixing plants to produce a black rubber mass, which is then sent to the rolling mill.

Rolling mill

After cooling, the rubber is cut into strips, which will form the basis of the tire construction. During the rolling phase, other tire elements are also prepared; some of them are then covered with a different type of rubber.

Assembly

At this stage, the tire itself is formed, starting from the inner layers. Fabric elements, steel belts, beads, frame, tread and other components are loaded into a special machine. The result is an almost completely finished product, which is called a "green tire".

Treatment

The green tire is hot-cured on a special machine that compresses all parts of the tire and gives it the final shape, including the tread pattern and manufacturer's markings on the sidewall.

Examination

At this stage, qualified specialists check each tire using special equipment to identify even the smallest flaws and defects before sending it for sale.

Some tires are X-rayed to help detect possible internal defects and problems. Our quality control technicians randomly select tires from a conveyor belt and cut them to test all construction details against Goodyear's high standards.

Component parts of the tire

Frame

Consists of fabric layers that form the skeleton of a tire and is usually made from fabric cords that are bonded and covered with rubber. This makes the tire flexible but not elastic. To strengthen the tire, a special rigid carcass layer is placed directly on its inner backing.

Board

They are made of high-strength rubber-coated steel wraps and form a sealed layer between the tire and the rim of the wheel.

Belt

The tire is wrapped with steel belts that increase its strength and rigidity. They are made from rubber-coated braided steel wire. Sometimes a Kevlar cord is added to the belt for added strength, puncture resistance and durability.

Side surface

This is a dense rubber element that is located between the bead and the tread and provides the tire with lateral stability. The manufacturer's information about this tire is printed on the side.

Shoulder area

The tire has a small chamfered edge between the tread and the sidewall. Its shape and construction affect how the tire behaves when cornering.

Tread

This is the soft area of the tire where the rubber meets the road surface. The tread is responsible for cushioning and traction, and its design / pattern and composition affect most of the critical characteristics of a tire.

Lamellas and grooves

The tread blocks are separated by deep grooves, which allow the tire to wick away water, snow and mud. Sipes are small grooves in the tread block that provide extra traction, which is especially important on snowy or icy roads.

Edge

The center of the tire is the weakest, so some tires have a reinforced rib in the center.
