Next - again gasoline, but turbocharged. This made it possible to remove from the same 1.4 120 horses and 215 Nm of torque. Naturally, the turbine is like filler neck, so the consumption on the highway will rise to 6.5 liters, and in the city to almost 12 liters.


The next motor is the only one in the lineup that is aggregated with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is a 1.6 atmospheric gasoline that produces 110 horses. The maximum torque is not impressive at all - 152 Nm. It is strange that this particular engine was chosen for the machine. With it, Fiat Tipo will accelerate to a maximum of 192 km / h, it will take 11.7 seconds to reach the first hundred, which is faster than a diesel 1.2 on the mechanics. Not bad. The consumption of such an engine varies from 4.5 to 9.5 liters of gasoline.

The top power unit can be equipped with either six-speed mechanics or a similar robot. It has the same working volume of 1.6 liters, a turbine and 120 horses in the arsenal. This is enough to take 200 km / h and start up to a hundred in 10.1 seconds. At the same time, consumption will remain within 4 liters of diesel fuel even in the city.

Italians in their repertoire. Cheap savings have repeatedly turned into problems for them not only in Europe, but also in the Russian market. Remember, about fifteen years ago, at the time of the next advent of passenger Fiats, we had a “popular wave” under the motto “We don’t need such a Fiat”? .. But as I got to know Tipo, it became clear to me that other serious almost no car.

The Tipo is built on a crossover platform but using a simpler rear suspension from the model - because all-wheel drive version no and will not. At first, the sedan appeared as - and under this name is already sold in Turkey. And for the vast majority of other markets (there are about forty of them), the good old name Tipo has been chosen. The newcomer is to some extent the heir to the model - but it is more modest and cheaper, it is still in good demand (at least in Turkey), so for some time it will be produced in parallel with the Tipo.

I have ridden the Tipo twice. First, I drove a pre-production car in the vicinity of a factory in Bursa (Turkey), where cars will be produced for all European markets. I vomited about twenty kilometers along a straight road in a convoy of several cars. I managed to understand only that even the pre-production Tipo was made to last - not a single panel creaked or fell off. I also liked the seats (soft, but with good profile) and a multimedia system unified with other machines of the FCA concern with a convenient touchscreen. Other pluses are a huge trunk (520 l) and a spacious backseat: “by myself” I sit down with a small margin in my knees, and my height is 186 cm.

The second meeting was in Belgrade, where I managed not only to get through the roads common use, but also cut down a few laps on a small ring road.

Even being shod with 17-inch tires, Tipo does not shake out the soul on bumps: the suspension is what you need! But from a 120‑horsepower turbodiesel 1.6 I expected more: noisy on high revs and not too bouncy at low. Partly the situation is saved by a manual box, which clicks no worse than on French and Korean cars of this class.

And on the ring Tipo opened up in all its glory! Rain, temperature near zero, Winter tires middle level - and I boldly turn off the stabilization system and do whatever I want with the car. Light understeer turning into neutral is safe and exciting at the same time. It's a pity, the engine is still the same - a gloomy diesel. Here would be a 110-strong petrol, which is lighter and more cheerful, and it would be very good. The Italians have not yet forgotten how to tune the chassis!

It was 15-20 years ago that few people took Korean cars seriously, but now the government has changed - at least in the Russian market.

I pestered the Italians with one question: when? After all, such a Fiat would look like our customers.

An interesting movie: they will deliver Tipo to Serbia with its tiny market, but not yet to us. What is the reason? Sanctions? Does Turkish production put spokes in the wheels?

The price of everything is the head. European journalists beamed: a great offer! But 10,500 euros is 800 thousand rubles! And more taxes? No, without localization there is nothing to think about the Russian market - that's what I told the Italians. They went to think., and Fiat Tipo. Fortunately, the appearance does not have any flawed touch of budget - no small wheels, no ridiculously docked trunk, no puffiness for the sake of internal volume. The design of the front part with its outlines resembles the Mazda KODO style, but the perception is radically changed by a chic radiator grille trimmed with “chrome” and glossy plastic.

In profile, the sedan is not so individual, but pleasant. The lowered, squat contour of the silhouette is formed, among other things, thanks to a clearance of 150 mm. For our realities, this may not be enough, plus the painted “lip” delivers some concern. front bumper. The other side of this coin is impressive low coefficient aerodynamic drag Cx at the level of 0.29.


And you can even fall in love with the Fiat behind the stern. Live, its C-shaped embossed taillights look even better than in the photos! And the seemingly short and small trunk is generally an optical illusion, there are 520 liters of space inside! The cover, which goes deep into the bumper, provides a low loading height, although it is a pity that this low cutout is limited in width.

But we, as mentioned above, have an “eternal classic”: an in-line “four” E.torQ 1.6 liters, 110 hp. s., 152 Nm, developed in the early 2010s in Brazil and previously seen on Punto.


The motor, by the way, although uncomplicated by modern standards of design, is quite economical - if you calmly roll along the highway without air conditioning, you can meet 6 liters per 100 km. Perhaps the outstanding aerodynamics helps here.

It’s impossible to be smart with such a combination of engine and gearbox - electronics protect the bowels of the Aisin AW60T “automatic machine”, prevent it from effectively roaring at the start, limiting traction, and sets an imposing pace of driving. Perhaps, for an active drive, “mechanics” are needed here, and even better - a turbocharged 1.4 T-Jet in combination with a preselective “robot” ...

Tipo's suspension is well known from other models of the brand. The front MacPherson type was borrowed from the 500X crossover, and the rear beam was borrowed from the 500L microvan. In motion, the car is more like the same "X" - the same knocked down and elastic, and maybe only a little softer. Its rigidity is noticeable only at the joints of asphalt, on paving stones and manifests itself more acoustically than vibrations on the controls. Perhaps the engineers would do well to work on the soundproofing of the wheel arches.

Moreover, everything is in order with the “shumka” of the engine shield - the engine is almost inaudible even at suburban speeds in the cabin - it's nice. The elasticity of the car has a positive effect on handling, the sedan does not strive to go into a big roll even in a fast 90-degree turn.

Prospects?

In Russia, they are rather vague. In good hands, the Fiat Tipo could cost us “somewhere between Rapid and Octavia”, that is, from 750 thousand to 1 million rubles, which is not so bad. But for this you need to localize production, invest a lot of money, make a large-scale advertising campaign in order to change not the most favorable image of Fiat...

It is not certain that FCA will now make such investments, having stable demand in the commercial segment here and good prospects in other emerging markets. But if I turn out to be right, I will be sincerely sorry that in Russia they will never know what a good Italian car is.
