Millions: the most reliable engines of our time. The most reliable engines in the world can easily run a million kilometers Motor millionaire which cars run the longest

The Toyota3S-FE engine presented itself to the list of such engines. This is one of the main representatives of its series. It is considered the most reliable and unpretentious.

Volume 2 liters, 4 cylinders, 6 valves.

Such indicators are typical for cars of the 90s. A camshaft with a belt, works with a simple distribution injection. Such an engine was produced from 1986 to 2000.

Power in different variations from 128 horses to 140.

The 3S-GE engine, together with the turbocharged 3S-GTE, took over a pretty decent walking resource.

The 3S-FE engine was installed on a whole range of Tayota models: Toyota Camry (1987-1991), Toyota Celica T200, Toyota Carina (1987-1998), Toyota Corona T170 / T190, Toyota Avensis (1997-2000), Toyota RAV4 (1994 -2000), Toyota Picnic (1996-2002), Toyota MR2, and turbocharged 3S-GTE also on Toyota Caldina, Toyota Altezza.

This motor is capable of serious loads, even with unimportant service. It was easy to work with him and return him to duty. With decent maintenance, such motors can travel 500 thousand km or even more (without overhaul).

What's the best engine? This question can be called eternal. Car owners and experts constantly argue: some point to German quality, for others there is nothing better than the products of the Japanese car industry, others say that the most reliable engines in the world- the prerogative of the United States. To get closer to solving this dilemma, we decided to compile a rating of the most reliable and durable engines.

Make a list the most reliable passenger car engines it was not easy - in recent years the industry has developed so much that many rating-worthy motors have been created. Therefore, we have selected the ten most popular and frequently encountered million-plus engines.

Diesel units

Diesel engines have always been considered the most reliable. These motors are preferred by drivers who spend most of their lives on the road. After all, these motors work under all conditions, and their simple design has excellent durability.

Mercedes-Benz OM602

The family of diesel five-cylinder OM602 engines deservedly holds the first position in terms of mileage, durability and the number of cars left with them on the run. These diesel million-strong engines were produced for about twenty years - from 1985 to the beginning of the 21st century. These engines are not very powerful - only 90-130 hp. with., but at the same time, they have earned the fame of reliable and economical motors.

You can meet OM602 in Mercedes cars in the body of W124 and W201, on G-class SUVs, T1 and Sprinter vans. The mileage of many representatives exceeds 0.5 million kilometers, and the record holders have seen two million kilometers on their way.

BMW M57

The engines of the Bavarian manufacturer are in no way inferior to their Stuttgart counterparts and are also considered the most reliable engines... The six-cylinder diesel engines from BMW impress with their reliability and are distinguished by their lively disposition. It was these diesels that changed the opinion of many about the diesel type of engine. A car equipped with an M57 is more than just a car.

The power of such a motor in various versions varies from 201 to 286 horsepower. Motors were produced for ten years - until 2008, all the best Bavarian models were equipped with the M57. Some Range Rovers also had M57 diesels.

The ancestor of the legendary M57 was the equally powerful, but less well-known M51. It was produced from 1991 until the beginning of the 21st century. Mechanics agree that such motors are very strong and reliable, because, with the exception of minor breakdowns, they work uninterruptedly for about 500 thousand kilometers.

In-line petrol "fours"

Gasoline engines are more familiar to us. They are arranged much more simply, that is, they can be repaired at home, and are more loyal to the weather. Therefore, even relatively small classic motors are present in our rating.

Toyota 3S-FE

Among gasoline engines, Toyta 3S-FE won the palm. This typical representative of the S series is considered one of the most reliable and easy-to-use units. The 3S-FE has a volume of 2 liters, it has 16 valves and four cylinders. Agree, the technical characteristics are quite typical. But the 3S-FE did its job. The power of such a motor was 128-140 hp. With. This engine became a successful prototype for its successors and was installed in various Toyota models for many years.

According to mechanics, this unit has an amazing ability to withstand high loads and unsightly service, its repair is very convenient, and the design as a whole is well thought out. If this engine is well maintained, its resource will last for 500 thousand kilometers, and during this time, major repairs will not be needed. Even minor breakdowns in this motor are rare.

This two-liter unit runs on gasoline and is a prominent representative of the famous Japanese family. Its first version was published in 1982, and analogs continue to be produced even now. Originally, these engines were produced with a single camshaft and had three valves per cylinder. However, in 1987, an improved version with two camshafts was released.

Until 2006, the newest versions of the 4G63 were installed on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. Recently, this famous motor is not only the prerogative of Mitsubishi, it can be found under the hood of Kia, Huyndai and even Brilliance.

Over the long period of production, the engine has been modernized many times, its newest versions are equipped with a timing control system, as well as more complex pressurization and power supply systems. This slightly reduced the reliability of the motor, but it became much more convenient to repair it. If such an engine does not overcome the milestone of 1,000,000 kilometers, it will still give a head start to its competitors.

Another family of "unkillable" motors - the Japanese D series from Honda, includes more than ten different units of 1.2-1.7 liters. They have been produced for over twenty years. The most durable was the D15 model, however, the rest of this family is very tenacious. The power of representatives of the D series reaches 131 horsepower.

Working speed up to 7000. These motors were installed on HR-V, Civic, Stream, Acura and Accord. It was possible not to worry about overhauling such an engine for at least 350 thousand kilometers, and with careful handling - even 500 thousand.

Opel 20ne

The list of the most successful "fours" is closed by the representative of the European engine-building grandee - Opel's x20se. He, as a bright representative of the GM Family II family, has established itself with a longer service life than the cars on which it was installed. The secret of its efficiency lies in its simple design and primitive distributed injection system.

Like the successful creations of Japanese manufacturers, the x20se has a volume of two liters. The power of various variations is 114-130 horsepower. Such motors have been produced since 1987, and their production was stopped in 1999. Usually such motors were faithful companions of Kadett, Astra, Vectra, Frontera, Omega, Calibra, Australian Holden, as well as Buick and Oldsmobile from the USA.

A sixteen-valve model - C20XE - a couple of years ago stood on Lada and Chevrolet cars in the WTCC racing championship, and its turbocharged version C20LET took part in the rally. Careful attitude to the engine will allow it to overcome a million kilometers, and if you load the engine, it will still be enough for a record six hundred thousand. Sixteen-valve varieties are not as long-lasting, but still they will not force their owner to often repair.

V-shaped "eights"

V8 engines cannot be called "eternal", but their resource is quite long, so, passenger cars are usually equipped with just such engines. The reliability of V-shaped units is manifested in the fact that they do not annoy the owners with even minor malfunctions, and can also cross the half-million kilometer threshold without much straining.

Bavarian motors are again in our ranking. The first passenger V8 was a success for the manufacturer: nikasil coating for the cylinders, a strong two-row chain, as well as a good range. This engine was called a resource engine because every detail is made to last. The use of a nickel-silicon coating for the cylinders made such a motor almost indestructible. Half a million mileage for such a workhorse is a trifling matter, and after such a test, the engine does not even have to replace the piston rings.

Simple design, high power level, excellent safety margin allows the car owner not to think about repairs. Later models of motors, for example, the M62, have a more complex design, but are more durable.

Gasoline in-line "sixes"

It may seem like a surprising fact, but nevertheless it is true - some six-cylinder engines are able to overcome the millionth barrier. The relatively uncomplicated design, the absence of vibration and good power made these motors very reliable.

Toyota 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE

The creations of the Japanese car industry have a volume of 2.5 and three liters, respectively. Long-term use of such engines made them true legends. The formula for success is a great resource and a high-spirited attitude. Produced 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE from 1990 to 2007. During this time, even turbocharged models were designed - 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GTE. In our country, such motors have spread mainly in the Far East.

Most often, 1JZ and 2JZ were installed on Toyota Mark II, Supra, Soarer, Chaser, Crown, as well as American cars Lexus Is 300 and GS300, which are not very popular in our region.

Atmospheric versions of such motors can overcome a million kilometers, and only then they will need repair. These engines are made of very high quality, and high efficiency is achieved due to unpretentious design.

And again in our ranking is the brainchild of BMW. Without the Bavarian "six", the list of the best would not be complete. The history of the popular M30 engine dates back to 1968. A long-liver among motors, this unit with minor modifications was produced until 1994!

A displacement of 2.5-3.4 liters and a power of 150-220 horsepower with a completely simple design made this engine one of the most popular. The M88 sports units were equipped with a 24-valve head.

Like any reliable engine, the M30 has a turbocharged sibling. Turbocharging is known to affect engine wear rate. But if the structure has a margin of safety, designers usually strive to completely exhaust it. The M102B34 motor is an M30 with a capacity of 252 horsepower.

Toyota is consistently among the most attractive cars in the world. This is a brand that is truly worthy of respect and can offer you unique technical options. At each stage of development, the manufacturer had his own considerations about a high-quality engine and the normal technical support of the machine. There were periods in the history of the automotive industry when many manufacturers in the world were striving specifically for the developments of the Japanese company. Today we will talk about Toyota engine models that have received the fame of millionaires. Note that there are very few such representatives among modern units. The company began to produce so-called disposable motors, which cannot be overhauled. This is an accepted fact in the automotive world as all manufacturers follow this path.

It is very difficult to consider the very best Toyota engines as the company offers many interesting powertrain options. Over the decades of successful work, the Japanese have developed and successfully launched more than a hundred models of units for their equipment. And most of the developments were successful. The company began to fill up with the main set of engines with huge advantages in 1988 and later until the very beginning of the new century. This is the era that brought glory to the manufacturer and made him world famous. The set of power units is so great that it will not be easy to choose some of the best among this army of technology. Nevertheless, today we will try to consider only the most famous and successful installations that the corporation has released in its life.

Toyota 3S-FE is the first millionaire with excellent performance

Prior to the release of the 3S-FE series engine, it was believed that reliable powertrains could not be efficient. Always unkillable engines were considered rather boring and not very attractive in terms of performance, gluttonous and noisy in operation. But Toyota's 3S series was able to change all perceptions. The unit was released in 1986 and existed without significant changes until 2002 - until the global change in the company's model range. Now a little about the characteristics:

  • the working volume is 2 liters, the standard design is built on 4 cylinders and 16 valves, there are no technical exceptions and delights in the design of the unit;
  • the injection system is simple distributed, a belt is installed on the timing system, the metal of the piston group is simply magnificent, which affects the excellent operation of the unit;
  • the power of various modifications ranged from 128 to 140 horsepower, which at the time of the development of the power unit was actually a record with only 2 liters of engine displacement;
  • even with poor service, the installation reaches up to 500,000 kilometers; many car owners have not done major repairs to the power unit since the end of the 80s;
  • after the overhaul, a rather high resource and excellent operation also remain, so that such an installation can reach up to 1,000,000 kilometers without any problems.

Interestingly, the successors of this unit in the 3S-GE models and the turbocharged 3S-GTE also inherited an excellent design and a very good resource. During operation, this engine is not particularly worried about the quality of the oil and the frequency of its replacement. There is no problem changing filters or using bad fuel. The motor was installed on almost the entire model range, except for SUVs.

Unique unit 2JZ-GE and its successors

One of the best Toyota engines in the history of the brand is the JZ series. In the lineup there is a 2.5-liter unit with the GE designation, as well as a 3-liter unit with the name 2JZ-GE. Also added to the series and turbocharged units with increased volume and the designation GTE. But today we will pay attention to the 2JZ-GE unit, which became a legend and existed from 1990 to 2007 without any reforms. The main features of the engine are as follows:

  • with 3 liters of working volume, the unit has 6 cylinders in an in-line design - the design is very simple, classic and can serve for an incredibly long time without breakdowns;
  • when the timing belt breaks, the valves do not meet and do not bend, so even with poor service you will not be forced to spend a lot of money on car repairs;
  • the large working volume caused quite interesting characteristics - 225 horsepower and 300 N * m of torque do a simply unique job;
  • the metals used are not sharpened for lightness, the unit is very heavy and bulky, therefore it was used in large company cars with the need for power;
  • operation up to 1,000,000 kilometers may well occur without additional repairs, the design is very reliable and produced with excellent attention to detail.

There are no flaws in the line at all, as evidenced by the reviews. In our latitudes, the most common engine on the Mark 2 and Supra. The rest of the models are not so common. American models of Lexus sedans were also equipped with such units, but in Russia there are only a few of them. If you decide to buy a car with such a unit, then you can safely take a mileage reserve of over a million kilometers, this is a perfectly acceptable resource for the engine.

Legend and base engine from Toyota - 4A-FE

One of the legendary and first successful developments of the company can be safely called the 4A-FE model. This is a simple gasoline power unit that can simply surprise the owner with its characteristics of durability and quality of service. The unpretentiousness of the motor would have made it popular today, but the company decided to move to more modern economical series. The unit is still well operated with the following features:

  • the classic design with a displacement of 1.6 liters produces a rather modest 110 horsepower, but at the same time it always works at the maximum of its capabilities in a car;
  • torque is also not surprising - 145 N * m cannot be called a great combination of dynamics and power, but the unit behaves surprisingly decent in heavy machines;
  • when the belt breaks, it does not lead to bending of the valves, no problems arise even with poor maintenance, and this indicates unpretentiousness and quality of products;
  • there are no requirements for expensive gasoline - you can safely fill in 92 and drive without any problems, without losing a single kilometer of resource (consumption will be a little more);
  • a million kilometers is not the limit, but without major repairs, only a few units reach this figure, it all depends on the quality of service and operating modes.

To a large extent, there are no problems with cars. When servicing, the only important factor can be considered the requirement for timely replacement of spark plugs. This approach will help you simply get real operational benefits and reduce fuel consumption. It should also be noted that the motor has no structural problems, it can actually go as many kilometers as you like and not give any trouble to the owner.

Indestructible motor for crossover 2AR-FE

The last engine, which will be discussed today, is another representative of the Toyota segment, which in its operation can give a head start to anyone. This is the 2AR-FE line that was installed on the Toyota RAV4 and Alphard. We know it best from the RAV 4 crossover with its incredible operational capabilities. The engine is made of high quality and can offer its owners simply amazing advantages of operation:

  • with a volume of 2.5 liters, this gasoline unit is enough for 179 horsepower and just incredible 233 N * m of torque, the characteristics are suitable for a crossover;
  • cars with such installations are completely unpretentious to gasoline, there is no need to look for the best fuel, you can even pour 92 gasoline without a twinge of conscience;
  • the chain on the timing system eliminates problems with the valves, its replacement is necessary every about 200,000 kilometers, but the engine resource goes far beyond 1,000,000 km;
  • there are great benefits to the operation of transport in terms of fuel consumption, maintenance costs - there are practically no service requirements, but its frequency should be normal;
  • undoubtedly the most striking example of the use of the unit is the Toyota Camry, in which this engine played a special role during the long period of the car's production.

As you can see, this power unit has also earned the attention of the world community. All motorists who have encountered the capabilities of the power plant talk about its incredible reliability and simply excellent operating options. In the worst case, this engine will have to be sent for overhaul at 500-600 thousand kilometers. It remains only to periodically go to the service and enjoy the reliability of this unit. We offer you to watch a video about the five best engines from the corporation:

Summing up

On the market, you can find a really large number of very different representatives of million-plus engines. But for the most part, these units ended their existence in 2007, when the company moved into a new era of power plants. In the new generation, the cylinder walls are so thin that repairs are simply impossible. So the old classic millionaires are only available on the secondary market. However, many models are sold today as used with up to 200,000 mileage and huge residual life.

However, when buying a car, you need to look not only at the engine, but also at all other features of the car. Sometimes mileage does not mean anything, but the quality of service and normal operation when buying is worth evaluating. You can find unexpected data about Toyota engines, which become the reason for not very successful operation. For example, the use of excessively poor fuel with impurities can disable the newfangled VVT-i system and lead to other malfunctions in the system. So the millionaire does not always remain so during his life. Have you come across in your experience with the above engine models?

Unfortunately, today the issue of reliability of a particular power unit is relegated to the background by manufacturers for a number of reasons. First of all, against the background of general globalization and the desire of automobile corporations to obtain super-profits, marketing is in the first place.

The trend towards a rapid change and gradual tightening of environmental norms and standards in the United States, Japan and developed countries of Europe has no less influence. In other words, producing reliable and durable motors is not only unprofitable, but also impractical.

The main task is to make sure that the power unit reaches the warranty period, after which it was still able to serve up to a certain conditional limit, which for many modern ones in practice is limited to an average mark of about 200-300 thousand km.

Automakers expect that while the average owner's car has covered so many kilometers, environmental standards have already changed, taxes on the maintenance of a used car will increase and the driver will rather change cars than repair the engine and other components.

It becomes clear that the stories of experienced drivers about German, Japanese or American engines with a million-plus population these days are more like a beautiful legend. We hasten to assure you that such motors do exist, and there are a lot of them.

However, on modern new machines, it is unlikely that such units can be found for obvious reasons. There is a much better chance of finding a car with such a reliable and durable internal combustion engine in the used car market. We will talk about this further.

Read in this article

Long-lived gasoline and diesel engines

Immediately, we note that it is simply impossible to consider all the units worthy of attention within the framework of one article. For this reason, our list included the most famous versions of powertrains that were found under the hoods of the most recognizable and even iconic cars of their time. So let's go.

Most Reliable Gasoline Engine

Let's start with the familiar inline four-cylinder internal combustion engines. Such motors are well-deservedly popular all over the world, and in the CIS countries, gasoline-powered units make up the absolute majority in comparison with analogues.

  • Among the gasoline engines from this group, it is worth highlighting the Toyota 3s-fe unit. This engine is rightly considered to be very reliable and fairly easy to maintain. The secret of the success of this installation is simple: 2.0 liters, and, different versions from 130 to 140 hp.

This engine can be considered very successful, since the internal combustion engine appeared in the late 80s, but its various modifications were produced until 2000. The 3s-fe engine was installed on the Toyota Camry of 1987-1991, it is located under the hood of the Celica T200, Avensis 1997-2000, RAV4 1994-2000, etc.

Car service workers and the owners themselves note the engine's resistance to harsh operating conditions, as well as the overall reliability of the structure. If you follow the engine, then the mileage is about 550-600 thousand km. without the need to do far not the limit for this unit.

  • Next on the list is the Japanese auto industry again. This time, the laurels of the championship go to the Mitsubishi 4g63 engine. This unit also has a displacement of 2.0 liters, first saw the light in the early 80s. Early versions had one and three per cylinder, from 1987 it received two camshafts. Modified versions of this engine were installed on the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX (this unit was installed under the hood of this model until 2006).

There are many varieties of the 4g63 unit, both atmospheric and turbocharged versions. More complex developments have a complex fuel supply scheme, etc. Naturally, the more complex the device, the lower the reliability. If we talk about derated versions, then these engines may well be called those "millionaires".

It is also noteworthy that various versions of this ICE are today copies that are licensed by the Korean brands Huyndai and Kia, as well as car manufacturers from China.

  • Go ahead. Surprisingly, our attention will once again be riveted on another legend from Japan. This time we will focus on Honda motors, namely the D series engines (D-series).

In the line of these ICEs, there are no less than a dozen different versions with a working volume of 1.2 to 1.7 liters with a capacity of up to 130 hp. The motors are easily spun up to 7 thousand rpm. Power units of this series were produced from 84 to 2005. The D15 and 16 versions were particularly distinguished by their outstanding performance in terms of reliability.

D-series engines were used in Honda Civic, HR-V, Accord, etc. Taking into account the fact that the working volume is not the largest and the power units had to be constantly twisted, the structure still relatively easily nursed up to 500 thousand km. In repair, these engines also did not give the mechanics any special problems or difficulties.

  • Another outstanding engine, this time of European production, is the engine from Opel. More specifically, we are talking about the powertrains of the 20NE line. Among the simple four-cylinder engines, the x20se version stands out. This engine has an "indestructible" design, which often lasted longer than the car itself, on which the unit stood.

A working volume of 2 liters, power from 115 to 130 hp, only 8 valves per cylinder, a timing belt and simple distributed injection allow this engine hundreds of thousands of kilometers to work properly even on oil and fuel of not the best quality. These ICEs appeared in 1987 and were produced until 1999. They can be found under the hoods of Opel Kadett and Astra, Vectra, Omega, Calibra models, on American Oldsmobile models, Buick popular in the USA, Holden from Australia, etc. There are also supercharged versions of this engine.

Note that more modern naturally aspirated versions of the modified 20NE with 16 valves have firmly settled under the hoods of Chevrolet, which are manufactured by GM in South Korea and other countries. As for the simple 8-valve versions, the mileage is about 500 thousand km. they are far from the limit. With proper care, such a power unit may well travel up to 800-900 thousand or even about a million kilometers.

In the case of more modern and advanced 16-valve versions, reliability is noticeably reduced, but the engine can also confidently travel 300-400 thousand km. The simplicity of the design does not create any special problems during repairs, the unit copes well with the loads and normally digests not the best fuel in the CIS.

Now let's take a look at the inline six-cylinder engines. First of all, among such units there are a lot of real legends capable of running that very coveted million. This reliability is due to the simplicity of the device, excellent balance and reduced vibrations, as well as sufficient power.

  • Among the leaders in this group, we immediately note the 1JZ-GE engine, well-known among professionals and amateurs of motorsport, and its continuation 2JZ-GE from Toyota. Power units of this series with a displacement of 2.5 and 3.0 liters are rightfully considered one of the most reliable and durable in the entire era of engine building. Also, internal combustion engines from this line are distinguished by outstanding performance in terms of power and torque.

These motors were produced for 17 years (from 90th to 2007). During this time, several variants were created, the most famous of which were the legendary turbocharged motors 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GTE. The turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions of this ICE firmly settled under the hoods of legendary Japanese sports cars (for example, the Toyota Supra model), felt great on the Mark II and Crown, Lexus models for the US market, etc.

Note that atmospheric engines of this line are quite capable of traveling 1 million kilometers or even more until the engine requires major repairs. Such indicators became possible due to the competent and simple design, as well as the high quality of performance of all parts and assemblies of the power unit.

  • The next worthy representative, now of the European school of engine building, on our list deservedly becomes the engine of the BMW company. The inline six-cylinder M30 was created back in 1968, while its modifications were produced until 1994.

The atmospheric unit had a volume of 2.5 to 3.4 liters, power ranged from 150 to 220 hp. The turbo version of the M102B34 was distinguished by a power of about 250 hp. The design of this motor is based on cast iron, 12 valves and aluminum. We add that the sports versions of the M88 had as many as 24 valves.

M30 engines can be seen on BMW 5 and 7 series well-known models in the CIS. Also, the specified engine was installed on a BMW 6, and the unit has repeatedly migrated from the old generation of the model to a new body. As practice shows, this engine (especially with a volume of 3.4 liters on relatively light 5 series models) is quite capable of reaching 500 thousand km. mileage and more.

  • The list continues with another BMW engine, namely the M50 inline-six. The line of these engines initially only strengthened BMW's glory after the reliable M30. The units were distinguished by their "explosive" character in the range of medium and high revs. The engines had a working volume of 2.0 to 2.5 liters, power ranged from 150 to 192 "horses".

The design remained relatively simple (cast iron block, aluminum cylinder head, timing chain, and four valves per cylinder). However, further modernization, which was subjected to later versions of this engine, somewhat tarnished the reputation. After the introduction of a complex valve timing control system (the VANOS solution widely known among BMW lovers), the engine became less reliable.

As for the "vanless" versions of the M50, this motor is quite capable of traveling about 500 thousand km. and more before overhaul. Problems with VANOS on modified versions may require intervention up to 200-250 thousand km, although with proper maintenance and care, the unit is also capable of operating normally for about 400 thousand km.

We also add that the next generation of M52 motors received a nikasil block, and also differed in a complex design compared to their predecessors. On such internal combustion engines, the number of malfunctions has noticeably increased and the total motor life of the unit has significantly decreased.

Powerful V-shaped engines round off the list of the most reliable gasoline engines. Of particular interest are units of the V8 type, which are found on elite passenger cars, SUVs and sports cars.

Immediately, we note that such power units on cars from Europe and Japan, as a rule, do not differ in a large resource. The fact is that such engines are made of lightweight materials, and they also have a rather complex design. The only exception to the rule can be considered only gluttonous derated V8s on American-made cars, but even there, not everything is so smooth.

  • If we talk about which V-engines are the most reliable, then the BMW M60 engine is worth mentioning. The motor has received, the cylinders are covered with Nikasil, and the engine itself is not distinguished by a high degree and is designed with a large margin of safety.

This power unit is capable of covering 500 thousand km without any problems. There have been cases when on such a run it is not even necessary to replace the piston rings. These motors were installed on BMW 7th and 5th series, the unit was used on models of the brand from 92 to 98.

The main disadvantage of this engine can be considered a nikasil coating. The fact is that driving on fuel with a high sulfur content can quickly "kill" super-strong material. It is for this reason that a loud scandal broke out around BMW cars with nickel-coated cylinders.

Then the BMW company decided to abandon Nikasil and switched to another material called Alusil. In practice, such a coating turned out to be more fragile, however, Alusil does not suffer so much from the effects of sulfur. So, if we exclude the possibility of refueling with sulphurous fuel, then such a V8 engine is quite capable of traveling half a million kilometers.

We also note that the next version of the M62 (a continuation of the M60) is structurally much more complicated than its predecessor. It is quite obvious that the resource of the unit has naturally decreased. This does not mean that the engine is not capable of operating 400 or 500 thousand km, however, the total number of various malfunctions on this engine has greatly increased.

Most Reliable Diesel Engine

To begin with, diesel engines are considered a more reliable type of internal combustion engine compared to gasoline counterparts. The weak point of modern diesel engines is not the engine itself, but the complex and. If we talk about old diesel units that have a simple implementation of injection, then the resource of such engines is simply amazing.

  • Although diesel engines of many well-known manufacturers are distinguished by a long resource, among the most outstanding power units, the OM602 engine of the company should be distinguished. The indicated five-cylinder engine, has 2 valves per cylinder, is equipped with a mechanical Bosch production.

Such diesel engines appeared in 1985, falling under the hoods of various vehicle models up to 2002. The unit does not differ in high power (in different versions, the indicator is 90-130 hp), however, it pleases the owners with its reliability and moderate appetite for fuel. Based on this engine, Mercedes built a more modern line (OM612, OM647), while the resource did not suffer.

As for the famous Mercedes OM602, such an engine was installed on the popular Mercedes W124, W201 models, on G-class SUVs, on the Sprinter model and even on some versions of the W210. For this engine, a mileage of about 500 thousand km is considered the norm. in harsh operating conditions.

There were also specimens that nursed more than 2 million kilometers without overhaul. The main thing is to keep track of the fuel equipment, fill in high-quality and engine oil, as well as service the internal combustion engine in a timely manner and quickly eliminate the problems that have arisen.

  • Another worthy representative in the list of the most reliable diesel engines is the BMW M57 engine. The unit is in-line, has 6 cylinders, is reliable and has outstanding characteristics.

This engine became a continuation of the "diesel" line of the company, based on the design of the M51, which was produced from 1991 to 2000. The designers took into account the shortcomings, as a result of which the M57 turned out to be much more successful. It should also be noted that this engine at the time of its appearance did not fit into the generally accepted concept of that time. In other words, the diesel internal combustion engine was considered a "slow" engine for a quiet ride and maximum fuel economy.

At the same time, the power of the BMW M57 engine in various versions ranged from 201 to 286 hp. The unit went into production since 1998 and was installed on various models of the Bavarian brand until 2008. The popular diesel "three", "five" or "seven" BMW could well compete with gasoline counterparts in acceleration dynamics.

At the same time, the torque and efficiency of the powerful diesel engine have confidently won fans around the world. The engine turned out to be so successful that the M57 diesel engine could be found both on a compact BMW 330D "lighter" and under the hood of a solid Range Rover.

What is the bottom line

As you can see, the service life of a motor most often depends on the complexity of its device, a carefully designed design, the degree of forcing, the quality of the parts and the correctly selected materials for their production. Also, the mileage before overhaul is strongly influenced by the quality of fuel and lubricants, individual characteristics and operating conditions, driving style, etc.

In other words, it is necessary to talk about reliability and mileage with a mandatory amendment to how a particular car is operated. It is quite obvious that if the car will often drive on the highway, the power unit runs on clean fuel and high-quality engine oil, the engine load mode will be optimal, then under these conditions the internal combustion engine is able to travel a lot of kilometers and work out a large number of engine hours.

If the vehicle is located in a region with a cold climate, most of the time the car is used within the city, etc., then the engine resource can be significantly reduced. The following factors greatly influence the life of the motor:

  • the car is often started in cold start mode;
  • movement begins, the motor "spins";
  • the engine does not have time to reach operating temperatures during a short trip;
  • It is also important to understand that most vehicles are in difficult operating conditions. This means that it is advisable to reduce the average oil change interval specified by the vehicle manufacturer in the manual by 20-50% (depending on individual conditions, characteristics of the oil used, etc.)

    Do not rely on the statements of manufacturers of fuels and lubricants. As practice shows, on our fuel, even the highest quality synthetic materials such as Longlife in simple atmospheric engines require replacement at most every 10 thousand kilometers traveled. For pipe motors and forced high-speed atmospheric engines, the service interval is additionally reduced to an average mark of about 7-8 thousand km.

There is an opinion among motorists that current cars are no longer as good as they were a decade ago. Especially often critics like to compare new models and legendary cars of the 1990s with engines of “million”. The reliability of those old cars has become the talk of the town, but even now there are many passenger cars that can easily travel 300 thousand kilometers. Moreover, even among budget cars, sometimes very tenacious copies come across. Read more about cars with super-reliable motors later in the review.

1. Renault

Recently, inexpensive cars of the French company Renault are very popular in Russia. One of the reasons for successful sales is the high reliability of the power units. The 1.6-liter K7M engine is an extremely simple engine with 2 valves per cylinder. The design of the timing and ignition module is more than simple. This is why cars like the Logan and Sandero have earned a lot of positive reviews. With proper care, cars with this engine cover more than 400 thousand kilometers.

The Renault K4M engine is a slightly more complex unit, already with 4 valves per cylinder. Thanks to this, the power increased to 105-110 hp. and it is enough for such models as Kangoo, Logan, Duster and Megane. Also, the French engine successfully took root under the hood of the LADA Largus station wagon. The service life of the Renault K4M engine is more than 400 thousand kilometers.

2. Mitsubushi / Hyundai / Kia

The line of Japanese engines Mitsubishi 4G63, produced in the 1980s - 2000s, is considered truly legendary. High build quality and timing chain drive make these Japanese engines very reliable. They rarely break down and have a resource of over 400 thousand kilometers.

The 4G63 engine is no longer produced, but there are many cars on the market with its direct "heirs", the 2.0-liter Kia-Hyundai G4KD and Mitsubushi 4B11. These power plants are under the hood of cars such as the Kia Cerato, Optima and Sportage, Hyundai Elantra, ix35 and Sonata, Mitsubishi Lancer and Outlander. The new engines have become much more complex, but they still boast a range of 350 thousand kilometers.

3. Opel

Opel Z18XER is one of the most reliable engines that can be found on budget mid-range cars. The timing belt drive and fuel injection system will never let the owners of Opel Astra, Zafira, Insignia and Vectra down. If all the maintenance is carried out on time, then this 1.8-liter Opel engine with a capacity of 140 hp. will travel more than 250 thousand kilometers without any problems

4. Honda

The Japanese company Honda is known for its affordable cars with simple and reliable engines. One of these is the Honda Civic. Compact car buyers can choose from a wide range of engines, including the 1.8-liter R18A and the 2.0-liter R20A.

Injection power plants are very economical, comply with Euro-5 standards and, at the same time, are very reliable. In practice, the service life of R18A and R20A engines is 250-300 thousand kilometers. That is how much the Civic, Accord, CRV and Stream can travel to overhaul.

5. Renault / Nissan

The Renault-Nissan MR20DE 2.0-liter petrol engine has been in production since 2005, but thanks to constant modernization it is still on the rise. Also known as the M4R, this unit has earned a good reputation. Indeed, with proper care, a car with this engine can easily travel 300 thousand kilometers, while only the cylinder head and the timing chain can fail. In general, the owners of Nissan Quashqai and X-Trail, Renault Clio, Mégane and Scénic should be satisfied.
