In 2004, the third-generation re-styled Mitsubishi Pajero entered the battle for the hearts and wallets of buyers. Technically, the updated version is no different from its predecessor. Changes affected only its appearance and interior.

Thanks to round fog lights and a new bumper shape, the modernized Pajero turned out to be more toned and aristocratic. Changes also affected the radiator grill: its wide chrome edging and the corporate red emblem were replaced by a thin and neat "edging" with a chrome badge. The rims of the updated SUV are 6-spoke, not 5-spoke, as in its predecessor.

More harmoniously combined with the body and new footpegs with illumination, which makes it easier to get in / out in the dark. The side skirts on the doors are now smooth, not ribbed, and the turn repeaters are snow-white (instead of orange). The "feed" of the car has got new lights and white turn signals mounted in the bumper. And the bumper itself was left without a wide chrome insert.

Pajero has balanced driving characteristics, excellent visibility, thanks to a high seating position and an advanced multi-mode Super Select 4WD-II transmission, which provides high cross-country ability and directional stability. The car is equipped with a 4-channel ABS integrated with electronic brake force distribution EBD, which together provides high active safety.

The Pajero body, created using Mitsubishi RISE technology, will provide reliable protection for the driver and all passengers in the event of an impact. The front and rear zones of programmed deformation dissipate the impact energy, and a very rigid monocoque body with a powerful integrated frame and safety bars in the doors form a power safety cage that protects people in the cabin in all situations. In 2006, at the Paris Motor Show, the fourth generation Pajero was presented to the public. The family features have not gone anywhere: a characteristic step on the lower edge of the headlights (this was the case with the very first Pajero), almost vertical roof pillars, the rise of the window line in the rear, the shape of the doorways, the tailgate opening to the right. The body actually remained the same. The length, width and height have changed slightly due to the new outer panels. Only a quarter of the parts went to the fourth generation as an inheritance, everything else is its own.

Changes in the load-bearing structure of the body can be counted on the fingers: an additional transverse strength element under the rear seat, a different bend of the amplifier under the dash, an increased number of welding points at the junction of the engine shield and side members, the spare wheel mount offset to the center and down. Yes, also an aluminum hood. The new body has become more torsionally rigid, as a result, improved handling on asphalt.

The salon has been significantly redesigned. The interior has become more modern and fashionable. New dashboard. A large color display appears in the center of the new console. At the same time, the relative position of the controls has not changed. Finishing materials are better. Soft plastic in a circle. The steering wheel is multifunctional. The steering column is adjustable for tilt only. The seats in the first and second rows are comfortable. The driver's seat in the version with an electric drive is equipped with five adjustments, including the stiffness of the lumbar support. Rear visibility has also improved noticeably: the spare wheel has been lowered by 50 mm. The trunk with the third row seats folded is enormous.

Basic equipment for the Russian market includes: climate control, CD receiver, alloy wheels, xenon headlights, manual rear air conditioning and cruise control. For the most expensive of the Russian versions (Ultimate), the prestigious Rockford Fosgate audio system, a rear-view camera and a navigation system are provided.

The GDI V6 3.5 l (202 hp) engine was replaced by a new petrol V6 3.8 l (250 hp) with a proprietary MIVEC electronic valve timing system and a variable intake manifold. This engine can only be combined with an adaptive five-speed automatic transmission INVECS-II Sports Mode. Pajero accelerates to 100 km / h in 10.8 seconds.

There is also a diesel option in the line of power units. The 3.2-liter engine has a new generation Common Rail fuel injection system and develops 165 hp. Moreover, for Russia, turbodiesels are supplied in a special adapted version for a cold climate and with an exhaust that meets the Euro 3 standards (for Europe and other countries - Euro 4). Literally an hour before I got behind the wheel of the Pajero, I passed another test car - VW Caravelle: a large eight-seater "bus" with a huge glass area and a high seating position. But even after the "bus", plunging into Pajero, I caught only one word in my head - "aquarium". The high ceiling, huge glass, visually thin door cards, a lot of air in the cabin ... Even the Caravel did not give such a feeling of spaciousness!

Forward to the past!

The interior also caused a storm of emotions. Pajero is a time machine! Torpedos, door cards, buttons, instruments, square knobs of gearshift levers and handouts - all this seemed to have come straight to me from the last decade of the last century, when the cars were real, made of iron and made forever, and not like now, when. Simple lines, no fashionable design delights, everything is square, stern and simple. Maybe to someone this archaic will seem unworthy of a car of the second decade of the 21st century, but to me, a person who grew up just on the design of the 90s, it warms my soul and gives me hope that the inside of this car is just as reliable and "for centuries" as it was in those days.

Unless the Mitsubishi Connect touchscreen multimedia panel looks completely different here. Personally, thanks to this simplicity and "antiquity" I felt myself behind the wheel of Pajero very comfortable, like at home in my childhood - safe and secure. There are no unnecessary decorations, no millions of glowing buttons and functions that look beautiful and are expensive, but which you will use once in your life, and even then out of curiosity.


Even the climate control here is single-zone - no pampering and tenderness (here even I was surprised - in the top-end configuration of the car for two and a half million could have made two "climate" zones, but apparently that would not be brutal enough). But there is a separate heater for the rear of the cabin.


The fact that the Pajero is a thoroughbred SUV is also evidenced by the number of options for transforming the interior. This is not found on modern "plastics". The rear seats can change the tilt of the backs, the backs themselves fold in a 40:60 ratio, the entire seats can also fold towards the front row, forming just a huge trunk. And if you pull the head restraints out of the front seats and slide them forward, then you can make an almost flat surface of all the seats. And it's easy to put two basketball players two meters tall to sleep. At the same time, you don't even need to unload the trunk - even now on an expedition to the North! This is rarely seen today.

With the turbine removed, and even with an automatic speaker, frankly speaking, it's useless. And the consumption is significantly higher. So I advise you not to remove the turbine, pour good oil and not turn off the car immediately after stopping (letting the turbine blades cool down - it will live longer). The cruising speed on the highway is 100.
