Volkswagen Sharan, 1999

Wonderful car, everything is thought out to the smallest detail! Bought for a trip to the Crimea with a family of 4 people. We went great! We spent the night in the car, no one was embarrassed. The second row of seats folds neatly into the front seats so you don't have to leave anything outside. There are also no complaints about the engine, it is turbocharged, the volume is not large 1, 8 (economical) and the plane flies at a speed of 150 km / h easily, probably more, but I didn't want to risk it. And I will add another review about the body, it is galvanized (this speaks for itself), despite its years there is no rust, let alone rot on the car. We are very happy with the car as a whole!

Volkswagen Sharan, 2002

Great car for all occasions !!! Practical, convenient, good in operation! Very reliable! "The King of Kings", he lives up to his big name! A German is a German! With proper operation - minimal costs and maximum pleasure from driving this car! Great, comfortable, family car for long journeys!

Volkswagen Sharan, 2002

The dynamics are good. The handling is excellent. The comfort is sufficient, the interior is spacious and comfortable, the trunk is very large and affordable. THEN every 10,000 km is relatively inexpensive, I ALREADY HAVE the 2nd SHARAN (on the shares since 2003 TDI), now the 3rd Sharan of 2006 has already been bought for myself. Pros: it is easy on it in the city, but on the highway it is simply cool and easy, the costs are average (it does not hurt). Cons: the suspension is good, but it takes on the asphalt joints a little harshly.

When buying a car, I had a lot of problems with choosing a model. Therefore, I would like to share my opinion about this brand with potential buyers of Sharan (maybe it will help someone).

Before Sharan, I had a petrol Fiesta with a Zetec engine. By the way, it is also a good and fairly reliable machine, though very small. So I was very impressed by the consumption of Sharan: on the highway with a cruising speed of ~ 100 km / h, the consumption of 5.8 liters (like the Fiesta), and the car weighs almost 2 tons; if ~ 120 km / h, then the consumption is 6.8 l; in the city, depending on traffic conditions (traffic jams) - from 7.3 liters to 10 liters. (the current consumption is shown by the on-board computer).

In many internet sources, Sharan swing rear doors are noted as a drawback, however, it seems to me that the door on curtains is more reliable and simpler than on guides. Yes, and in operation, I do not feel any inconvenience, and the rear passengers, too.

The ground clearance is high enough. Sometimes there is a problem with parking in the yards, so he can drive into the curb without much difficulty. The only thing is that it is inconvenient for my 4-year-old son to get into the salon (a bit too tall), but nothing, he will grow up.

There is often information that the front stabilizer struts serve quite a bit (about 10 thousand km). My opinion is that it all depends on the roads and driving style. I did not change the rack after the purchase, I have already traveled 12 thousand km. And I don't see any problems yet.

So, I bought Sharan: I replaced the timing belt with two rollers ($ 85), replaced all filters (~ $ 45), upper bearings with bearings (~ $ 30), of course oil. I went… Having passed about a thousand three, a big disappointment awaited me, I stood in the middle of the intersection (not a single gear did not want to turn on). Drove to the service station, began to understand. From anyone, but from the Germans, I did not expect this ... It turned out that the burghers installed a cunning dual-mass flywheel on a model with a turbocharger. And the dual-mass flywheel is not just a metal idiot, it is a whole spring-damping system. So this system ordered to live a long time. In short, I wanted to buy a used flywheel (~ $ 150), but everything I felt was, to put it mildly, worn out and not suitable for long-term use. Then I decided to replace the entire clutch with a new, reliable and time-tested clutch with a conventional flywheel (the whole set cost me $ 600).

In winter, it started up without problems even at -19 degrees. However, at -21 degrees, it did not start (I did not dilute the diesel engine with kerosene). Later I found out that our winter diesel fuel is designed for -20 degrees, then it will paraffin.

Overall, the car is reliable. In the cabin, everything is located quite ergonomically. The trunk is just huge (without the third row of seats). When the second row is folded, the length of the luggage compartment is about 1600mm. The suspension is stiffer, at least than the 97 onwards Passat B5. (I went, I know). But nevertheless, the car is also designed for the transportation of goods, including (that, in vain, a large trunk, or something).

Riding Sharan is a pleasure for me. The handling is excellent. I don't see any problems with visibility.

The main feature of the VW Sharan car itself is that it is an exact copy of the Ford Galaxy and Seat Alhambra, produced at the same plant in Portugal. Hence the common merits and demerits of these Europeans. To the pluses VW Sharan first generation, which was produced from 1995 to 2010, can be attributed to a high level of reliability and durability of components and assemblies.

Also positive aspects in Sharan are good stability provided by the anti-skid system, and a fairly rich package bundle.

There will be no problems with the further implementation of the Volkswagen Sharan - the belonging to the leading concern of the German car industry affects.

Spare parts, both new and used, will not create a headache either, because they fit from Seat Alhambra, the car is the same. The salon boasts not only a high level of transformation and comfort, but also coziness, spaciousness and high-quality finishing materials. 1.9TDI engine 81kW (110 hp) of the AVG type has long been known as a powerful, reliable and economical unit that consumes no more than 6 liters of fuel on the highway and 10 liters / 100 km in the city.

The turbine is durable, if used correctly maintains up to 300 thousand km of run... But in addition to all of the above, 1.9TDI can be chip-tuned with a power increase of up to 30%. True, the cost of all the bells and whistles with work will cost from 600 to 1000 "forever green".

The transmission is the most problem-free and durable is the checkpoint... Manual transmission only occasionally requires intervention -. The brakes are very effective, and the main advantage of the body is the spacious trunk.

If we talk about the disadvantages VW Sharan I, then first of all I would note the poor build quality. Certainly, compared to the Russian assembly, the Portuguese one is a cut higher, but when compared with the German one, the more the VW nameplate obliges, then the score is not in favor of Portugal. Another not insignificant disadvantage is the rather expensive spare parts. If other cars can be found cheaper, brought from England, then from you will not find any used spare parts on Sharan, it is not listed there as a car for an Englishman. The disadvantages of the design include insufficient visibility - because of the wide front struts, the dimensions of the hood are not visible, although this is a matter of habit.

From engine 1.9TDI, despite its high reliability, surprises can also be expected, but mainly from improper operation.

Firstly, the maintenance and repair of this power unit can only be trusted by qualified specialists, for example, those who work.

Secondly, 1.9TDI motor does not like heavy loads and overheating, from which it can break through the cylinder head gasket, and even cracks appear with a mileage of 250 thousand km. Therefore, try not to exceed the reading of 4.500 rpm and monitor the temperature.

Thirdly 1.9TDI is very moody about the quality of oil and fuel... Low-quality engine oil can cause problems with starting in winter, so do not skimp on a good company, especially since you cannot trust cheap brands of oil - very often counterfeits can come across.

To avoid problems with the Volkswagen Sharan fuel equipment, use only clean and high-quality fuel with a cetane number of at least 51, otherwise the injection control unit will fly out due to paraffins and dirt. And do not forget that it is categorically impossible to ride on a dry tank - a very expensive fuel pump will fail. Subject to these conditions up to 250 thousand km you will not have problems with fuel equipment.

Electrical equipment VW Sharan I, unfortunately, cannot boast of a high level of reliability. They could not even arrange it successfully, but tucked it under the front seat, where it is constantly damp, humid in winter and salt can get in.

Front suspension proved to be short-lived, the stabilizer struts can withstand only 40 thousand kilometers on our roads, the rear stabilizer bushings also take care of the same amount, and the front silent blocks are only 10 thousand kilometers longer. Anyway consumables of the entire suspension of the Volkswagen Sharan are not encouraging with prices... The chassis is also quite problematic and short-lived, in addition, the camber angle of the front wheels is not adjustable, and if the camber is incorrect, you will have to change the strut assembly.

The main disadvantage of the body is scarce and poor location of the radiator and air conditioner pipes which are fixed too low under the bottom, so all road salt and dirt settles on them.

The Volkswagen Sharan is a popular D-segment minivan from a well-known German automaker. From Persian, the name can be translated as "bearer of kings." Produced from 1995 to our time, today the second generation of the model is in production. As conceived by the developers, the main target audience of the 5-door spacious car is young middle-income families.

History reference

At the turn of the 1980-1990s, Europe was swept by the fashion for family cars with a spacious single-volume interior - the so-called minivans. Many auto companies got involved in the race for a promising segment. However, the development of a new class of cars requires large investment costs both for design and research work and for organizing production, which ultimately affects the final cost of the finished product. The two auto giants, Ford and Volkswagen, have decided to join forces in this area to split the costs in half.

A joint project to develop the Volkswagen Sharan and its twin brother, the Ford Galaxy, began in 1991. The plan was for both manufacturers to enter the minivan segment of the European market, which at the time was dominated by Renault Espace. For this, a joint venture AutoEuropa was created with headquarters in the town of Palmela (Portugal) located near Lisbon, where construction of an assembly plant began.

From idea to implementation

By joining forces, the German and American companies divided the responsibilities for the design work among themselves. Volkswagen was involved in the powertrain, in particular the TDI and V6 engines. Ford developed the suspension and related components. The overall design of the models was created under the direction of Greg M. Greoson, an American specialist working at the Advanced Design Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany.

In late 1994, the results of the partnership between the Volkswagen Group and the Ford Motor Company were presented at various showrooms. And the production of both models began on May 1, 1995. Subsequently, the Volkswagen Group developed a third model for the Spanish subsidiary brand SEAT, which had a common base. It was named "Alhambra" in honor of the architectural and park ensemble in Granada.

The characteristics of the Volkswagen Sharan and the Ford Galaxy were similar, as they had a single platform. The exterior design also differed only in small things. There were noticeable differences in the arrangement of the cabin. The first generation combined the aesthetics of the well-established Ford Mondeo and Passat Variant models. After restyling in 2000, each of the cars acquired its own face. "Sharan", in particular, has incorporated elements of the Passat and Jetta IV.

First generation

The first generation was launched in May 1995. "Sharan" was steadily in demand. With a production volume of 50,000 units, about 670,000 vehicles were sold annually over 15 years of production. In addition to Europe, it was sold in a number of Asian countries, Latin America, South Africa. Moreover, for each region, its own version was developed, focused on natural features and national preferences of buyers.

For example, in Mexico, powerful comfortable cars are in demand, so the Volkswagen Sharan TDI Turbo with a volume of 1.8 liters (150 hp, 112 kW) with a five-speed automatic transmission Tiptronic only in the Comfortline configuration was mainly realized here. At the same time, both a turbocharged engine and a more economical 1.9-liter TDI with 115 hp were available in Argentina. With. Both the 5-speed "mechanics" and the "automatic" Tiptronic acted as a transmission. The most popular was the Trendline trim.

Design

Despite the fact that the appearance of the car did not seem to stand out from the rest, its recognizability was high due to the strongly sloping front end. The windshield, hood and even the radiator grille with head optics visually form a single plane. This improved aerodynamics and slightly reduced fuel consumption.

The Volkswagen Sharan salon does not amaze with its newfangled design, but all the elements are made in German pedantically and with high quality. The ergonomics of the driver's seat and work are good. All the keys and levers you need are close at hand. The dashboard, ventilation system and car radio are combined into a single compact unit made in the form of a hemisphere.

Specifications

Volkswagen Sharan has a simple but reliable design. The rear suspension is located on oblique levers, the front is a MacPherson system. The most common types of transmission are 5-speed manual, but there are also 6-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions. They are distinguished by their reliability and, as a rule, do not create problems for car owners.

There is one five-door body for all modifications, but the number of seats can reach seven due to the installation of additional seats to the detriment of the trunk. The most comfortable is the six-seater Highline. It is equipped with independent VIP-class seats with an individual adjustment system, armrests and the ability to rotate 180 °. Dimensions: width - 1.8 m, length - 4.63 m, height - 1.73 m.

Drive type - front. Initially, the power line consisted of 5 types of engines. The weakest is the 90-horsepower diesel. But it is economical both in terms of fuel consumption and maintenance. Since 2000, in order to increase their power, they began to be equipped with special expensive unit nozzles, which are demanding on the quality of the diesel engine. Later, the line of units expanded to 10 models.

Features of the 1.9L I4 TDI motor:

  • Power: 85 kW (114 hp) at 4000 rpm.
  • Torque: 310 Nm @ 1900 rpm.
  • Volume: 1896 cm 3.
  • Fuel supply: direct injection, turbocharging.
  • Maximum speed: 181 km / h.
  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h: 13.7 sec.
  • Combined fuel consumption per 100 km: 6.3 liters.

Of particular interest to this day are the all-wheel drive Sharan Syncro, equipped with the most powerful 2.8-liter engine in the range.

Restyling

In 2000, the Volkswagen Sharan was redesigned. Small changes were made to bumpers, optics and body elements. However, the overall appearance remained the same. But the salon has changed. Instead of a barrel-shaped, slightly awkward dashboard, focused mainly on the driver, a slender two-piece panel appears, stretching from the driver's door to the passenger door. It still looks modern today.

The number of glove compartments and all kinds of niches for gloves, documents and various small things has increased significantly. The front seats have acquired pronounced lateral support. The head restraints are high and reliable. Since 2004, the assembly of vehicles equipped with an on-board computer has begun. Of course, he is not as cool as modern systems, but he copes with his duties. Also, more expensive and high-quality materials began to be used in the decoration.

Second generation

In 2010, sales of the second generation of minivans began. If you compare the photos, the Volkswagen Sharan has become more elegant. It has grown in height and breadth by several centimeters. The design is based on the platform. Production is carried out at the same AutoEuropa plant in Portugal. Machine weight reduced by 30 kg. The initial range of petrol engines included the 1.4-liter TSI (148 HP) and 2-liter (197 HP). Complementing the picture are two 2.0-liter TDI diesel engines with an output of 140 hp. With. and 168 liters. With. (125 kW, 170 hp). The rear doors are now sliding.

Of course, the changes also affected the interior. The on-board computer has moved higher, and the instrument cluster has been supplemented with a liquid crystal information display. In the 2015 models, a lacquered wooden insert runs along the contour of the doors and the "tidy", slightly enlivening the austere interior. The upholstery of the seats has improved, leather is used in expensive trim levels.

Further cooperation

In December 1999, Ford sold Volkswagen its stake in AutoEuropa after the manufacturer decided to develop its own replacement for the Ford Galaxy. The auto giants disagreed on how big the next generation of minivans should be. At the same time, the assembly site in Portugal continued to work.

Finally, the cooperation between the partners ended in 2006. The last Ford Galaxy left the AutoEuropa production lines at the end of 2005. The new generation was developed by a company from the USA independently, and the production moved to the city of Limburg (Belgium). Thus, the Palmela factory focused exclusively on assembling the Sharan and Alhambra models.

By the way, Volkswagen Sharan is not sold in the United States and Canada. This was originally due to an agreement between Ford and Volkswagen not to compete with the Ford Aerostar. Subsequently, the Germans signed an agreement with Chrysler to work together on projects for Chrysler Town and Country, which are more suitable for the North American market.

According to car owners, the car is a worthy competitor in the minivan market. It is quite reliable, with a long engine resource. Moreover, on the roads you can also find models of the first generation in good condition. Given the prevalence of the brand, there are no problems with repairing and finding spare parts.

The car is convenient to operate both for a family and for transporting bulky things - the seats can be easily removed in a few minutes. The ride on the highway is smooth and comfortable. But the car is not intended for off-road. The weak point is the landing gear and air conditioners of the first series. Also, drivers note the high fuel consumption of gasoline engines.

My golden hands, glory to the Almighty that he rewarded me with them. Therefore, I do the repair myself. I try to use the original details. The price for them is one and a half, higher, but calmer. Racks in a circle changed to, hydro,. Ball bearings, CV joints, rakku, tips, bones, cables, parking brake, and much more on the chassis, all original. I changed the turbine on the engine (it is with geometry), after flashing about 135 horses on the stand, drums,. There is only one way out, give a damn, fuel pump, and then calmly start the engine. There are no functions, kickdown, on this year's car. But when I drowned out the USR, broke through the catalyst and changed the DMRV to 037 (the original, by the way, this is on the VAZ2110,2114), the thrust increased noticeably. People, try not to change the DMRV, sometimes it is enough to rinse it in alcohol (propyl, isopropyl, ethyl, methyl), while it is wet, put it back in place and start the engine. The air flow will dry it out. And you will see the difference in, YOU, value, air, I don’t remember the group, and most importantly, you will feel the thrust. The fifth door stopped closing, it turned out that the wires in the package were broken, near the hinges. I disassembled the corrugation, there are about 10 wires of them, tinned the ends, soldered, insulated with heat shrinkage and .... everything worked, and the wipers and all the lighting equipment. You can tell a lot, but better go to Skype - mabus66661 General impression Inertia, smoothness, grace, solidity and many other qualities of this car. About, sharan, you need to say not a minivan, but a carriage. The steering is very responsive, especially at speed. Landing in the driver's seat is pleasant, the visibility is excellent. Not a sedan (station wagon), but not a bus either. Although, when the VAZ 2110 and VW T4 stand next to them, they differ little in size. More precisely, a sharan, between them! I like four swing doors, it's easier with them. With sliding problems over time (sagging, closing poorly, access to the salon is limited). My car is equipped with a 1998 AFN 1.9 TDI diesel unit with an electronic injection pump. The people call such cars - TRACTOR. But thanks to the presence of the injection pump, I bought this car. Reystaling cars (younger than 2001) came with CDI unit injectors (they are more expensive and capricious). The electrics are easy to repair and much more reliable than those of cars of recent years (judging by other reviews, many criticize Sharanovskaya). Chassis like a tank, except for the front struts. I would put racks in one and a half times the diameter, yet the weight of the car is about 2 tons. In winter, a heated windshield is convenient for a good view (consumes about 30 amperes). About the salon, it is Spartan, heated only the front seats. Behind, oars, in front of electric lifts. Side mirrors on cables without heating, I like (more reliable, greased and no electronics), these were on my Audi 80 V3.
